RUSSELL – The TMP-Marian softball
team ran their winning streak to four games Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep
of Russell/Victoria. The Monarchs held on to win the opener 9-7 then took game
two 14-4. 

TMP has won seven of their last nine
and improves to 10-6 on the season. They play two in Colby Thursday then close
out the regular season with a makeup doubleheader in Great Bend Friday.

Game 1: TMP-Marian 9, Russell/Victoria

The Broncos scored six runs in the
bottom of the seventh and had the tying run at the plate before a pickoff stopped
the rally and gave the Monarchs the win.

TMP scored two in the fourth, fifth
and sixth innings to grab a 6-1 lead then tallied three in the top of the
seventh for a 9-1 lead. 

Julianna Baalmann’s two-run single gave the Monarchs a 2-0 lead in the fourth.
Hannah Garcia drove in a run with a double and Brooke Koeningsman knocked in
the second in the fifth with a triple. Garcia drove in two more runs with a
triple in the sixth to put TMP up 6-1.

The Monarchs scored on an error, an
Alexa Ryersee double and a Madison Augustine single to go up 9-1 in the
seventh.

Augustine allowed five earned runs
on three hits with three strikeouts and four walks for the win.

Game 2: TMP-Marian 14,
Russell/Victoria 4 (5 innings)

HAYS - The Hays High girls soccer team won their second straight Tuesday, shutting out TMP-Marian 4-0 at Hays High School. 

Katie Dinkel scored two goals for the Indians with Arely Maldonado and Madeline Martin adding the other two. Caroline Robben had two assists and Aleyia Ruder one. 

It was the Indians seventh shutout of the season as they improve to 11-3. They will close out the regular season at home against Garden City Friday. 

The Monarchs drop to 7-6. They close out their regular season at the Wichita Classical School Thursday.

NEW ORLEANS - Both Fort Hays State track and field teams remain ranked in the USTFCCCA National Rating Index heading into the final weekend of the regular season, released Tuesday. The women now rank 18th in the country, while the men are 22nd in the latest set of rankings. The men moved up one spot in the region rankings, now sitting in third amongst teams from the MIAA, NSIC and GAC conferences. The women are sixth in the region, while both teams now rank fourth in the MIAA power rankings. 👟 FHSU ranked nationally entering final week of regular season

Year number eight of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference softball and baseball championships at the Great Bend Sports Complex is in the books.
The end date was pushed back two days after weather delayed the start of the
tournament until last Friday, but the baseball title game wrapped up Monday.


The KCAC championships marked the first large tournament on the recently turfed
ballfields for Great Bend Recreation Commission Executive Director Diann
Henderson. 
"Our staff entertained very nice comments from visitors and guests," 
said Henderson. "Our teams were appreciative of the complex, even with 
the weather. They were glad we didn't have to pull tarps and sling mud. 
They really enjoyed the complex this year." 
During the winter, the Rec Commission, USD 428 and City of Great Bend teamed up
to cover a $1.37 million project to place artificial turf at the five
ballfields of the complex. 
A large USSSA baseball tournament will be hosted at the Sports Complex May 21-22,
and the Class 2-1A high school baseball state tournament will be held at the
facility the following weekend.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

The end date was pushed back two days after weather delayed the start of the
tournament until last Friday, but the baseball title game wrapped up Monday.

Collegiate tourney: Rave reviews for newly turfed Great Bend ballfields

It appears the Fort Hays State football program has picked up a big transfer. Former Hays High standout defensive end Gaven Haselhorst announced via twitter Tuesday that he will be a Tiger.

Haselhorst spent the last year at Kansas State before entering the transfer portal last month.

HAYS – The TMP-Marian boys golf team had three golfers place inside the top-10 Monday afternoon on their way to a second-place finish at their own invitational at Smoky Hill Country Club. 

Sophomore Pake Dewey won the individual title with an 11-over 82. Junior Landon Rozean finished fourth with an 84 and freshman Heuer Brungradt finished in a tie for sixth with an 89.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Tyler Wells pitched six strong innings to earn his first victory of the season and the Baltimore Orioles used a six-run fifth inning Monday afternoon to surge past the Kansas City Royals 6-1.

Baltimore has won four of five for the first time this season and finished its homestand 6-4. Kansas City fell to a season-high eight games under .500.

The game was a makeup of Saturday’s postponed game to cap a rain-altered series. Friday’s game was washed out and made up as part of a doubleheader the teams split Sunday.

Wells (1-2) allowed Ryan O’Hearn’s two-out RBI single in the first, but cruised through the rest of his start. He retired 16 of the last 19 batters he faced and struck out three in the longest outing of his major league career.

The 27-year-old right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery in 2019 and missed all of the 2019 and 2020 seasons, then pitched out of the Orioles’ bullpen as a Rule 5 pick last season. He made his sixth start Monday and threw 54 strikes among his career-high 75 pitches.

“Knowing they don’t strike out a lot, it’s really just kind of making sure I’m mixing up my pitches well, not trying to strike guys out, trying to get quick outs,” Wells said. “We have a whole infield and outfield for that.”

Kansas City has dropped seven of its past nine games and scored just 22 runs in that span. The Royals were 1 for 6 with runners in scoring position Monday.

“We have to figure out how to put crooked numbers together by just stacking hits on top of each other,” Kansas City manager Mike Matheny said. “They’re just hard to come by right now.”

The Orioles had only four hits in their fifth-inning rally against Royals starter Carlos Hernández (0-2). A walk, Anthony Bemboom’s double and Jorge Mateo’s RBI single tied it with one out. Bemboom came around when catcher MJ Melendez’s errant throw on Mateo’s steal of second sailed into center field.

Hernández was on the verge of escaping further damage when he struck out Cedric Mullins. But Trey Mancini singled in Mateo, and Hernández issued a walk and hit a batter before his wild pitch scored Mancini. Ryan Mountcastle then lined a single to score two more runs.

“That inning was a keep-the-line-moving type of attitude,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said.

Hernández allowed six runs and seven hits in 4.2 innings, striking out two.

Royals: Kansas City placed OF Edward Olivares (right quad strain) on the 10-day injured list and recalled C Sebastian Rivero from Double-A Northwest Arkansas. Rivero had served as the 27th man during Sunday’s doubleheader.

Orioles: Mountcastle was in the lineup as the designated hitter after rolling an ankle while stealing second base in the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader. “Watching that again, it didn’t look good,” Hyde said. “We dodged a bullet there.”

BALTIMORE -- Bruce Zimmermann threw six effective innings and Baltimore Orioles beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 to earn a doubleheader split on Sunday.

The Royals won the opener 6-4 when Michael Taylor hit a tiebreaking single in the ninth after a pair of two-out Baltimore errors.

In the second game, Zimmermann (2-1) allowed two runs and five hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

“That’s the No. 1 goal for all of the starters is to have a quality start, try to go six innings, and try to take the pressure off the bullpen every single night,” Zimmermann said. “I’m feeling really good about being able to go six innings today.”

The Orioles pounced early, scoring three runs in the first off Daniel Lynch (2-2) on a passed ball, an RBI single by Ryan Mountcastle and a sacrifice fly by Ramón Urías.

The Royals pulled to within 3-1 when Hunter Dozier hit a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Whit Merrifield.

Tyler Nevin added an RBI single in the fourth that boosted the Orioles’ lead to 4-1. Dozier cut the margin to 4-2 with a run-scoring single in the sixth.

Keegan Akin pitched two scoreless innings for the Orioles and Dillon closed out the ninth to pick up his first save and fourth of his career.

Orioles outfielder Austin Hays went 5 for 7 over the two games and leads the team with nine multi-hit games.

“When he swings at strikes, he hits the ball,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “Right now, I feel like he’s a little more patient, he’s getting in good counts and he’s taking some walks. He’s not trying to do too much.”

EMPORIA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State men's track and field team placed fifth at the 2022 MIAA Outdoor Championship with 73 team points after picking up three All-MIAA honors and breaking one school record on Sunday. The 4x400m relay team of&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6480">Hayden Albright</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6507">Jack Pakkebier</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6484">Nolan Churchman</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6499">Ethan Lang</a>&nbsp;combined for a school-record time of 3:11.06 to wrap up the day with a second-place finish and a spot on the All-MIAA podium. Churchman and Lang also picked up All-MIAA status in individual events, with Churchman finishing second in the 400m dash with a personal-best provisional time of 47.30. Lang posted a third-place finish in the 800m run finals with a time of 1:52.54. 👟 FHSU men place fifth at MIAA Outdoor Championships

EMPORIA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State women's track and field team finished fourth at the 2022 MIAA Outdoor Championships with 82 team points, tied for the program's best finish at the outdoor league meet. The Tigers picked up two more event victories and four All-MIAA performances on Sunday, giving FHSU three MIAA champions and five All-MIAA honorees for the week. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6538">Lyric Holman</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6537">Alexandra Hart</a>&nbsp;both added another MIAA Championship to their trophy case. Holman won the 100m dash by a mere .003 seconds with a time of 11.57 for her fourth league title. Holman later placed fourth in the 200m dash with a time of 24.02 to add five more team points. Hart grabbed her third MIAA title and her fourth All-MIAA honor with another win in the high jump. The sophomore cleared the 5-7 bar on her second attempt, one fewer attempt than Pittsburg State's Erica Schamel to give Hart the win on a judge's decision.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6539">Summer Kragel</a>&nbsp;contributed five team points with a fourth-place finish in the high jump after clearing the 5-5.75 bar on her second attempt. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6549">Mattie Rossi</a>&nbsp;contributed 13 team points in the hurdles races after placing fourth in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.77 and placing second in the 400m hurdles after crossing the line in 59.09. She broke the one-minute barrier in the 400m race for the second day in a row after becoming the first Tiger in history to do so in Saturday's preliminary round. EMPORIA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State women's track and field team finished fourth at the 2022 MIAA Outdoor Championships with 82 team points, tied for the program's best finish at the outdoor league meet. The Tigers picked up two more event victories and four All-MIAA performances on Sunday, giving FHSU three MIAA champions and five All-MIAA honorees for the week. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6538">Lyric Holman</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6537">Alexandra Hart</a>&nbsp;both added another MIAA Championship to their trophy case. Her time Saturday is third best in the nation based off the national provisional list entering the weekend. She also turned in a personal best time of 13.80 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles to finish second in the prelims, setting up an opportunity to score big points for the Tigers in both hurdle events on Sunday. HAYS – Life Prep Academy scored three runs in the top of the
sixth inning to retake the lead and beat the Hays High baseball team 6-3 in the
final game of the Western Plains Diamond Classic Saturday at Hays High School.
The Fire went 4-0 to win the title and have now won 14-straight games. The
Indians finshed 1-3.

After the Fire (20-7) scored two in the top of the first, the Indians (10-8)&nbsp; answered with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth to take a 3-2 lead. Garrett
Wellbrock drove in Dylan Dreiling with the first run on a groundout to first. Carson
Spray tied the game with a two-out single to center which scored pinch-runner
Brett Schumacher. Wellbrock then put Hays up 3-2 when he scored a squeeze play
with two outs.

Life Prep got the lead back for good with three the next
innings. The first came on a sacrifice to tie the game 3-3. They took the lead
following an error on a grounder to third then added the final run on a two-out
single the center

The Fire tacked on an insurance run on a throwing error in the
seventh.

Life Prep starter Ethian Samaniego held the Indians to three
runs on three hits with three strikeouts and four walks over four innings. Maestro
Saunders pitched three scoreless innings of relief and picked up the win.

Toby May allowed one earned run on four hits with one walk and
took the loss in relief in his varsity debut after starter Carson Spray allowed
two runs on four hits over four innings.

The Indians close out the regular season Tuesday at home
against Ulysses.

⚾ Indians fall in Diamond Classic finale

HAYS – The Hays High baseball team split their two games on
day two the Western Plains Diamond Classic at Hays High School. The Indians lost
a marathon 15 inning affair with Manhattan 4-2 but bounced back with a 3-2 win
over Trinity Academy out of Wichita in the final game of the day.

The Indians (10-7) close out play at the Diamond Classic Saturday
against Life Prep of Wichita at 3:45 p.m. The Fire defeated Manhattan by run-rule
and Great Bend in their two games Friday.

Game 1: Manhattan 4, Hays 2 (15 innings) 
After 11 scoreless innings, Manhattan broke through with two runs in the top of
the 12th only to see Hays High answer with two in the bottom of the inning on Dylan
Dreiling’s two-out, two-run homer. It was Dreiling’s ninth of the season which is a new single-season record, breaking the old mark of eight held by Jeremy Schmeidler.

Manhattan took the lead for good with two in the 15th on a
solo homer from Kyler Horsman and an error. The Indians were retired in order in
the bottom of the inning to end the game.

Hays had their chances to take the lead early, leaving the
bases loaded in the first then stranding runners at the corners in the second.
The Indians only base runner over the next five innings came in the fifth after a double from Dreiling which was the Indians first hit of the game.

Hays got two on to start the eighth and had two on in the 10th. They also had a runner thrown out at the plate trying to score from second on a single to end the 11th.

Dalton Dale took the loss in relief allowing three earned
runs on five hits with two strikeouts and five walks over 5 1/3 innings.

Starter Dylan Dreiling allowed only one hit over 9 1/3 innings
with 11 strikeouts and two walks.

Dreiling had three hits and Noah Weimer added two.

Manhattan starter Coy Cavender also allowed only one hit over
7 innings with 13 strikeouts and three walks.

Game 2: Hays 3, Trinity Academy 2

Porter with the go-ahead run as the Indians ended their three-game losing streak.

The Knights grabbed the lead with a run in the top of
the first, but the Indians answered in the bottom of the inning on Dalton Dale’s

Trinity grabbed a 2-1 lead in the fourth on a fielders choice
but the Indians again had an answer when Bradyn Dreher scored on a Carson Spray
groundout.

Blake Schmidt pitched five innings and picked up the win. He
allowed two runs on three hits with eight strikeouts and five walks. Keatyn
Barnett pitched two hitless innings of relief for the save.

Bradyn Dreher had two of the Indians six hits.

COLBY – The TMP-Marian baseball team ran their winning-streak
to six games with a doubleheader sweep over Colby Friday. The Monarchs won 13-2
and 18-1 and are now 10-4 on the season.

They are scheduled to play at Garden City next Thursday.

Game 1: TMP-Marian 13, Colby 2 (6 innings) 
The Monarchs scored four runs in the top of the first and led 5-0 after two.
They added four in the fifth and four in the sixth.

EMPORIA, Kan. - Six Fort Hays State multi-athletes opened competition at the 2022 MIAA Outdoor Championships Friday with the first half of the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6551">Taylor Savolt</a>&nbsp;sits in fifth place through four events in the heptathlon with 2,909 points. Savolt hit PRs in both the 100m hurdles (14.71, 855 points) and the 200m dash (25.29, 860 points). She led the field in the 200m race and was second out of 15 runners in the 100m hurdles. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6577">Hadley Williams</a>&nbsp;is 13th with 2,407 points after personal-bests in the 100m hurdles (15.86, 732 points), shot put (31-0, 494 points) and the 200m dash (27.14, 700 points).&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6535">Ellie Dusselier</a>&nbsp;is one spot behind Williams in 14th with 2,173 points thanks to posting a personal-best time of 29.02 in the 200m dash (553 points). RUSSELL – The TMP-Marian girls finished first and the boys
fifth at Friday’s Russell Relays at Shaffer Field.

The girls won six individual events and two relays. Emilee
Lane, Kassidi Yost and Shalee Gottschalk all won three gold medals. Lane won the
800 and was on the winning 4x800 and 4x400 relays. Yost won the high jump and
was on the winning 4x400 and 4x100 relays and Gottschalk won the 100 hurdles
and was on the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Ella Bain won the 3200, 1600. Emma
Basgall won the long jump and Kali Hagans the discus. 

The Monarch boys won two events. Kade Harris took the 100
meters (22.89) and they won the 4x800 relay.

Plainville’s Emma Rudman won the girls discus (123-3) and shot
put (35-6) and Jesse Kerns won the triple jump (33-8). Braylon Bittel won the boys
javelin (153-7) and Anders Dewey the 110 Hurdles (16.16).
