MANHATTAN, Kan. – Seniors Markquis Nowell and Keyontae
Johnson swept the Big 12 weekly player of the week honors on Monday (Jan.
9) with Nowell earning Player of the Week for the second time and Johnson
picking up his third Newcomer of the Week honor after helping Kansas State earn
consecutive Top 25 road wins at No. 6/6 Texas and No. 19/17 Baylor last week.

It marks the first time in school history that K-State has
swept both Big 12 honors in the same week.

Nowell, who became the first Wildcat since Michael
Beasley with consecutive 30-point performances, averaged an astounding 34.0
points on 54.8 percent (17-of-31) shooting, including 58.8 percent (10-of-17)
from 3-point range, in the 2 wins while dishing out an average of 11.5 assists
per game. He also connected on 24-of-25 attempts from the free throw line,
seeing his streak of 29 consecutive makes end with his miss in his last attempt
in overtime.

Johnson averaged a near 20/10 double-double over the 2-game
stretch, scoring 26.0 points per game on 63.6 percent (21-of-33) shooting from
the field, including 37.5 percent (3-of-8) from 3-point range, to go along with
9.0 rebounds in 40.1 minutes per game. He has now scored in double figures in
all 15 games.

The tandem combined to score 120 points in the 2 wins on a
collective 59.4 percent (38-of-64) shooting from the field, including 52
percent (13-of-25) from 3-point range, while hitting on 31 of 32 attempts from
the line. It is most combined points by 2 players over a 2-game span in the
last 50 seasons, surpassing the 113 scored by Askia Jones and Anthony
Beane between March 24-28, 1994.

Nowell opened the week by scoring a career-best 36 points in
the school-record 116-103 win over the Longhorns, going 9-of-15 from the field,
including 6-of-10 from 3-point range, and a perfect 12-of-12 from the free
throw line. His point total was the seventh-most by a Wildcat in a Big 12 game
and the most since Barry Brown, Jr., scored 38 points vs. Oklahoma State
in 2018. The 116 points tied for the most scored in a Big 12 Conference game
and was the most by an unranked team in a win a Top 10 opponent since 1988.

Nowell followed with the
school's first 30-point/10-assist game in the 97-95 overtime win over the
Bears, scoring a game-high 32 points to go with a career-best 14 assists in 43
minutes of play. He became the first Wildcat with consecutive 30-point games
since Beasley accomplished it in four straight games from Feb. 23-March 4,
2008. The senior guard’s 14 dimes tied the school record for assists in a
conference game as well as tied for the second-most in any game in school
history. It was also the most assists by a Wildcat in the last 40 years.

Johnson registered back-to-back
20-point games for the first time this season, tying his career-high for the
second time with 28 points in the win over Texas to go with a game-high 9
rebounds, 5 assists and a steal in 38 minutes. He followed with 24 points at
Baylor on 11-of-17 shooting to go with a game-high 9 rebounds, 2 assists, a
block and a steal in a career-best 43 minutes. 

It is the fifth and sixth weekly awards for the Wildcats
this season with Nowell winning Player of the Week for the second time after
winning it on Nov. 28, while Johnson captured his third Newcomer of the Week
after winning it on Nov. 14 and Dec. 19. Teammate Nae’Qwan Tomlin won
Newcomer honors on Dec. 27.

Overall, it is the sixth career weekly honor for Nowell, who
was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week on Nov. 19, 2019, Dec. 3,
2019, and Feb. 3, 2020, while playing at Little Rock. It is the third career
weekly honor for Johnson, who was named the SEC Player of the Week on Nov. 25,
2019, while playing at Florida.

A 5-foot-8, 160-pound point guard from Harlem, N.Y., Nowell
is currently averaging 17 points on 41 percent (71-of-173) from the field,
including 37.6 percent (32-of-85) from 3-point range, and 87.1 percent
(81-of-93) from the free throw line to go along with a Big 12-best 8.9 assists,
2.9 rebounds and 2.3 steals in 34.9 minutes per game. He is one of just two
active Division I players to total more than 1,500 points, 500 assists and 200
steals in a career.

A 6-foot-6, 230-pound forward from Norfolk, Va., Johnson is
currently averaging a team-best 18.8 points on 58.2 percent (103-of-177) from
the field, including 41.7 percent (20-of-48) from 3-point range, and 75.7
percent (56-of-74) from the free throw line, to go with 7.1 rebounds, 2.5
assists and 1.3 steals in 33 minutes per game. He leads the Big 12 in field
goal percentage, while he is third in scoring and seventh in rebounding.

🏀 K-State's Nowell, Johnson sweep Big 12 weekly honors

DENVER (AP) — Russell Wilson threw three touchdown passes, Justin Simmons forced two fumbles and the Denver Broncos dodged a franchise-worst 13th loss with a 31-28 victory over the playoff-bound Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

The Chargers (10-7) knew before kickoff they were locked into the fifth AFC playoff seed with a first-round game looming at Jacksonville, but coach Brandon Staley played his starters anyway, a decision that could prove costly.

Joey Bosa had a sack in the first half, but appeared to be limping around the sideline afterward. The Chargers (10-7) announced no injury to Bosa and declined to give a reason for his absence the rest of the game, and wide receiver Mike Williams left with a back injury in the first half.

Justin Herbert warmed up for his first playoff appearance with another solid outing — 25 of 37 for 275 yards, two TDs and no interceptions.

Wilson finished 13 of 24 for 283 yards, three touchdowns and an interception, and Jerry Jeudy capped a month-long surge with a career day that featured 154 yards on five catches and 39 yards on three rushes.

With the win, the Broncos (5-12) avoided their first winless run in the AFC West in a non-strike year since divisional play began in 1970. They also handed interim head coach Jerry Rosburg his first win after four decades as an assistant.

Rosburg, 67, took over two weeks ago when Nathaniel Hackett was fired. On Monday, he'll return to the hyperbaric oxygen therapy venture he was involved with before GM George Paton lured him out of retirement this season to serve as a senior assistant to Hackett.

And the Broncos will continue their search for their fifth head coach since they won Super Bowl 50 seven years ago. On deck are interviews with Jim Harbaugh and Sean Payton.

After struggling all season under Hackett, Wilson had his best two games of the season with Rosburg in charge, including last week's 27-24 loss at Kansas City.

Wilson got off to a slow start Sunday — he completed just three of his first nine throws for 16 yards when the Broncos got the ball at their 25 trailing 17-10 with 26 seconds left before halftime.

Instead of burning the time and heading into the locker room satisfied to be in it, Wilson found Latavius Murray for 15 yards, unleashed a 57-yard heave to Jeudy and hit Eric Tomlinson from 3 yards out to tie it at 17 with 6 seconds remaining in the half.

Wilson found running back Tyler Badie from 24 yards out to give Denver a 24-17 lead on the opening drive after halftime and added a 24-yard TD throw to Courtland Sutton that made it 31-20.

Broncos punt returner Brandon Jackson's muff gave the Chargers life and backup QB Chase Daniel responded with a 3-yard TD toss to Keenan Allen, then hit Joshua Palmer with the 2-point conversion to make it 31-28.

Broncos CB K'Waun Williams left in the first half with a concussion, and WR Freddie Swain left with a hip injury after hauling in a 54-yard pass in the second half.

Chargers: Headed to the playoffs for the first time since 2018 and will face the surging Jaguars, who have won five in a row.

WACO, Texas (AP) — New Kansas State coach Jerome Tang had a tough time enjoying another big victory for the Wildcats. This one came against one of his closest friends and former team.

Markquis Nowell had the first 30-point, 10-assist game in school history, his 14th assist coming on Ismael Massoud's go-ahead 3-pointer with 31 seconds left in overtime in the Wildcats' 97-95 victory Saturday at No. 19 Baylor, where Tang was on coach Scott Drew's staff the past 19 seasons.

“This wasn't fun before, and wasn't fun after,” said Tang, who added that he even cried afterward and had a hard time celebrating the victory with his own team.

His only real enjoyment came during the game, when Nowell had 32 points and Keyontae Johnson added 24 as the Wildcats (14-1, 3-0 Big 12) matched their best overall start since 1958-59.

“We’re not trying to prove doubters. We’re trying to just continue to believe in ourselves,” Tang said. “Had we lost this game, it wouldn’t change that we’ve made great strides as a team. And because we won, it doesn’t mean that we don’t have room for improvement.”

K-State is 3-0 in the Big 12 for the first time in 10 seasons, all against ranked teams. That includes a single-game scoring record in a 116-103 win at sixth-ranked Texas last Tuesday night.

Baylor (10-5, 0-3) called timeout after Massoud's 3. But Adam Flagler, who had 23 points, was surrounded by three defenders when he lost the ball out of bounds with 6.1 seconds left.

Nowell then made the first of his two free throws after being fouled. Flagler grabbed the rebound and the Bears had one more shot, but Caleb Lohner’s 3 was off the mark.

"If we’re going to lose, losing to Coach Tang is someone I would want to lose to,” Drew said. “He’s done a remarkable job in a short period of time, and I love him like a brother.”

The Bears hadn't lost their first three Big 12 games since 2003-04, Drew's first season. They blew a 17-point lead in their Big 12 home opener on Wednesday, losing when TCU hit a go-ahead shot with 4 seconds left.

Keyonte George had 22 points for Baylor, and Flo Thamba had 14.

Tang was welcomed back to Waco with a pregame video of highlights from his time with the Bears, and he got a nice ovation before being presented with his Big 12 regular-season championship ring from last season. He was part of 397 wins that included the 2021 national title.

It was the first time Drew had faced one of his former assistants. Tang was with him since the start of his tenure with the Bears.

“Coach Tang tried to make sure it wasn’t about him and it was about us,” Nowell said. “He knew what it was going to be like coming back, but he just focused on the game plan and how to win, and that’s how the team handled it."

It was only the second 30-point, 10-assist game in the Big 12 in the past 10 years — Trae Young had one for Oklahoma in 2017. Nowell’s 14 assists tied the Kansas State for a conference game, matching Tim Jankovich’s mark against Kansas on March 7, 1981. ... Nowell also has the first back-to-back 30-point games for the Wildcats since Michael Beasley's four in a row at the end of the 2007-08 regular season.

When the new AP Top 25 comes out Monday, Kansas State should be ranked for the first time since being 18th in the final poll of the 2018-19 season. Baylor could be unranked for the first time since that same season. The Bears were 16th in 2019-20 preseason poll, starting their current stretch of being in 65 consecutive polls, including 11 as the No. 1 team.

Kansas State hosts Oklahoma State on Tuesday night.

Baylor plays three of its next four games on the road, first at West Virginia on Wednesday night.

🏀 Kansas State 14-1 after overtime victory at No. 19 Baylor

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — No. 3 Kansas came out of the gate solidly for once in a Big 12 game.

Freshman Gradey Dick scored 16 points, Jalen Wilson had 14 points and 14 rebounds, and the Jayhawks rode a hot start to a 76-62 victory over West Virginia on Saturday night.

Kansas (14-1, 3-0 Big 12) has won eight straight. Against the Mountaineers, the Jayhawks avoided both the stagnant beginnings and the nail-biting finishes of their first two conference games.

“I think just coming out with energy," said Dick, who has scored in double figures in a dozen games so far. "What we've been talking about in the locker room before games is, when we kind of come out in those sluggish games, we end up playing catchup ball. That's what we want to try to work on.”

Kansas entered the game making 38% of its 3-pointers but took advantage of open spots in the West Virginia defense early. The Jayhawks made six consecutive 3-pointers to jump ahead 22-10. Dajuan Harris hit his first two from long range, giving him nine straight over three games before both he and the Jayhawks cooled off.

The Kansas lead never got below five points after that.

“We’ve started games when we’ve shot it well. I don’t know that we’ve shot it 6 for 6 from 3 well,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. ”And it was all different guys."

KJ Adams added 14 points, Kevin McCullar finished with 12 and Harris 11 for the Jayhawks.

Tre Mitchell scored 15 points, Erik Stevenson added 12 and Emmitt Matthews had 11 for West Virginia (10-5, 0-3 Big 12), which has lost three straight since making a brief appearance in the AP Top 25 at No. 24 a week ago.

Stevenson, West Virginia’s leading scorer, kept his temper in check Saturday after fouling out of the previous two games and being called for technical fouls in each. But Stevenson missed 12 of his first 13 shots.

West Virginia started the second half missing 13 of its first 15 shots and couldn’t find any rhythm down the stretch.

“We seemingly miss more 2-footers than any team in American history," West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said. “It's hard to make a shot from 2 feet or 4 feet or 8 feet if you're not looking at where you're shooting it.”

Dick hit a 3-pointer, fed Zach Clemence for a layup on the Jayhawks' next possession, then made three free throws after being fouled on a long shot as Kansas extended a seven-point halftime lead to 62-43 with 9:38 remaining.

“Did he miss a shot?” Huggins said of Dick, who sank four 3-pointers and was 4 of 7 from the floor. “Didn't seem like he did.”

HAYS - Fort Hays State scored the final 18 points of the first half to build a 15-point halftime then outscored Pittsburg State by 13 in the second half as they bounced back from a loss on Thursday night with an 83-55 win Saturday at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Gorillas (5-10,2-7 MIAA) led early by four. The Tigers (11-4,6-3 MIAA) evened the game at 19 on a Bjarni Jonsson layp following a Gabe Pieschl steal. Albert McBride hit a 3-pointer on the next possession to but PSU up three with 8:29 to play in the first half. They would not score again. The Tigers held PSU scoreless for over a minute to start the second half and pushed their lead to 17. The Gorillas never got closer than 17 the rest of the way. The Tigers scored the game's final seven points for the final 28 point margin.

Pieschl and Jonsson led the Tigers with 15 points each. Jonsson hit a canned a career-high three 3-point field goals and finished 6-of-9 from the field. Pieschl was also 6-of-9 from the field and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Nnanabu scored 12 of his 13 points in the second half. Gilbert Peters added 12 points. LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs don't believe in simply wrapping up the AFC's top seed. They want to have fun doing it.

Late in the first half Saturday against the Las Vegas Raiders, the Chiefs huddled and spun in a circle, broke out into the shotgun with running back Jerick McKinnon taking a direct snap. He faked a handoff to Kadarius Toney and pitched to quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who then threw to Toney for a 9-yard touchdown.

But, it didn't count. A holding penalty brought back the play. The Chiefs then scored anyway to take full control of what became a 31-13 victory.

But, even if it didn't count, it underscored the Chiefs' creativity and willingness to have fun, even while playing for playoff positioning and a week off.

“We talked about it on the side, ‘Let’s see if we can get some confusion going and throw something back.'" Mahomes said. "It worked. We just had the holding penalty. We got some good things going for the playoffs, and whatever we run has to work.”

That, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said, was the bottom line.

“You do (want to make it fun), but you want to score, too," Reid said. “It's not fun when you're not doing that.”

Almost lost was the NFL record for total yards in a season that Mahomes set. He passed for 202 yards and rushed for 29 against the Raiders, giving him 5,608 total yards this season. That surpassed the record of 5,562 yards set by Drew Brees in 2011 with the New Orleans Saints.

“Pat was on fire,” Reid said. “He's throwing these (statistics) out there like they're nothing.”

More than setting the mark, Mahomes helped ensure the top seed for the Chiefs (14-3) and a bye in the first round of the playoffs, which begin next weekend. Kansas City, however, is not assured of home-field advantage throughout the postseason.

Because Monday night’s Buffalo-Cincinnati game was canceled, the Chiefs could wind up playing the Bills or Bengals in the AFC championship on a neutral field. This was the first NFL game played since Hamlin was hospitalized. Both teams wore black shirts in warmups that read “LOVE FOR DAMAR” with his No. 3 in the middle. Mahomes also wore a hoodie that had a drawing of the player with “HAMLIN STRONG” below it.

Raiders running back Josh Jacobs, who was dealing with hip and oblique injuries as well as a reported family emergency, was a game-day decision but played. He rushed for 45 yards and could possibly win the NFL rushing title with 1,653 yards.

But Jacobs fell short of the franchise rushing record of 1,759 yards set by Marcus Allen in 1985. This was potentially Jacobs’ final game as a member of the Raiders because his fifth-year option was not picked up. His performance this season has given Las Vegas officials plenty to consider.

Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton made 16 tackles, giving him 180 for the season and breaking the team record of 179 set by Derrick Johnson in 2011. … Kansas City running back Jerick McKinnon has caught a touchdown pass in six consecutive games. He has nine TDs total over that span. … Chiefs rookie defensive end George Karlaftis has 5½ sacks in seven games. … Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce caught six passes for 38 yards, giving him 110 receptions this season, just one off the Chiefs’ mark set by Tyreek Hill last season.

🤼 Tigers finish 12th at NWCA National Duals

HAYS - For a second-straight game, the Fort Hays State women got off to a slow start. But unlike Thursday when they were able to rally past Missouri Southern State, the hole was too deep in an 87-65 loss to Pittsburg State Saturday afternoon at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

The hot-shooting Gorillas (11-4, 6-3 MIAA) scored the first eight points of the game and led 25-10 after the first quarter. Pitt State pushed the lead to 33 late in the second quarter and led 50-19 at the half.

The Tigers (13-5, 8-2 MIAA) made a furious comeback attempt, going on a 17-1 third quarter run to close the gap to 16 but trailed by 20 at the end of the third quarter. FHSU would get as close as 14 with a little over five minutes to play but the Gorillas answered scored seven straight to hold the Tigers off.

The Gorillas shot 50.8 percent from the field. FHSU was able to get its field goal percentage up to 37.3 percent for the game after shooting 23-percent in the first half. The Tigers finished 0-for-19 from beyond the 3-point line. The Gorillas 8-for-20 beyond the 3-point line.

Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;led the Tigers with 20 points and tied for top rebounding honors on the team with Sydney Golladay and Kate Dilsaver, all with five. Katie Wagner and Emma Ruddle both scored 12. Golladay had five assists. Grace Pyle finished with 21 points and hit three 4-pointers. Tristan Gegg added 19 points 19 points and five 3-pointers.&nbsp; The Tigers slipped to a second-place tie with Nebraska-Kearney in the MIAA standings, which is the team they will play next Saturday at GMC.

The Tigers fell at home to Missouri Southern on Thursday night in a game where they came out of the gates hot, but struggled offensively for a good remainder of the game. After leading by 12 with just under eight minutes to go in the first half, the Tigers saw the Lions go on an 18-2 run to take a four-point halftime lead. FHSU tied the game two times early in the second half, but saw MSSU run away with the game in the final 10 minutes. Fort Hays State and Pittsburg State are meeting for the 165th&nbsp;time on Saturday. FHSU leads the all-time series 89-75 and won the last meeting 70-51 last year in Hays. The Tigers fell at home to Missouri Southern on Thursday night in a game where they came out of the gates hot, but struggled offensively for a good remainder of the game. After leading by 12 with just under eight minutes to go in the first half, the Tigers saw the Lions go on an 18-2 run to take a four-point halftime lead. FHSU tied the game two times early in the second half, but saw MSSU run away with the game in the final 10 minutes. Fort Hays State and Pittsburg State are meeting for the 165th&nbsp;time on Saturday. FHSU leads the all-time series 89-75 and won the last meeting 70-51 last year in Hays. The TMP-Marian Monarchs earned a doubleheader sweep of the
Sacred Heart Knights in Salina Friday night as both the boys and girls opened
the 2023 calendar with a pair of wins.

GIRLS: TMP 55, Sacred Heart 30 The Lady Monarchs used a pair of double-digits runs on their
way to a 55-30 win Friday night over the Sacred Heart Knights.

The Monarchs (2-3) opened the game with a 9-4 run and after
Hannah Garcia converted on back-to-back field goals TMP led 13-9 at the end of
the first quarter.

Sacred Heart (2-7) scored four straight points to open the
second quarter tying the game at 13 but the Monarchs answered with a 10-0 run,
sparked by a Brooke Koenigsman three pointer gave the Monarchs a 23-13 lead.

TMP extended the run to 16-4 to end the first half leading
29-17.

&nbsp;Koenigsman scored 13
of hear career-high 20 points in the first half.

Sacred Heart cut the lead back to 10 to open the second half
only to see TMP finish the third quarter on a 15-2 run and lead 44-21 through
three quarters.

The Monarchs Jaci VonLintel scored seven straight to end the
third quarter and open the fourth as the Monarchs closed out their second straight
win, and their seventh straight over Sacred Heart 55-30.

Brooke Koenigsman led all scorers with 20 points. Jaci
VonLintel recorded her fifth straight double-double with 11 points and 11
rebounds. Hannah Garcia added a career-high nine points.

BOYS: TMP 62, Sacred Heart 44 The TMP boys ran their win streak to two straight games
thanks to a career-night for Luke Rome and another big night from his fellow
senior big man Dylan Werth as they beat Sacred Heart 62-44.

Sacred Heart (6-3) took an early 4-2 lead but the Monarchs
answered with a 6-0 run to take an 8-4 lead and they neve trailed again. 

TMP (3-2) took a five-point lead into the second quarter and
in the second quarter Rome added six of his 10 first-half points and a
three-pointer by Joey Mindrup helped to spark a 12-2 run that put TMP up 29-17.

The Monarchs largest lead was 12, on two different occasions
in the first half and they led 31-23 at halftime.

After dealing with foul trouble in the first half Werth
scored 11 of his game and season-high 24 in the third quarter helping TMP build
a 49-38 lead into the fourth quarter.

Werth and Rome combined for 11 points in the fourth quarter
as the Monarchs pulled away for a 62-44 win.

🏀TMP opens 2023 with sweep of Sacred Heart

Hays High opened 2023 and Western Athletic Conference play on Friday night in Liberal. Both the Hays and Liberal girls entered with a state ranking. Liberal won the 2022 WAC title. The Indian boys won at least a share of the previous three conference titles.

Both teams used 6-0 runs in a tight first quarter that left Hays with a 12-9 lead following a Carly Lang three point play with four seconds left.

Liberal scored the first four points of the second quarter for their first and only lead of the first half at 13-12. Following ties at 18 and 21, the Indians went on an 8-0 run for a 29-21 advantage and led 30-24 at halftime.

Hays again built their lead to eight points in the third quarter at 34-26 with 6:20 left. The Indians though went cold from the field and Liberal found their shot. The Redskins outscored Hays 33-16 over the final fourteen minutes for a 59-50 advantage.

The Indians last lead came with just under four minutes left at 45-44. The game featured seven ties and seven lead changes.

Molly Martin led Hays with 18 points and Carly Lang scored 14. Liberal was paced by Hailey Contreras who scored thirteen in the fourth quarter for a career high 26. Her previous career high was 24 which also occurred against Hays.

The Indians fall to 4-3 and open conference play at 0-1. The defending WAC champs are 6-0 and 1-0.

Hays led wire-to-wire and never led by less than four on their way to a 60-38 over Liberal. The Indians scored the first six points of the game before the Redskins made a pair of free throws at 6-2.

The Indians scored the games next 11 points to lead 17-2 early in the second quarter. Hays pushed the lead to 18 twice in the second quarter and led 29-14 at halftime.

Hays was never threatened in the second half leading by as many as 22 in the third quarter and 25 in the fourth.

Hays was able to get 14 players in the game with 11 of them scoring.

Jack Weimer led all scoring with 18. Chason VanDerWege added 13. Liberal was led by Zayden Martinez who scored 16, making 10 of 11 free throw attempts.

Hays wins back to back games for the first time on the season and is 4-3 on the year and 1-0 in conference play. Liberal falls to 2-4 and 0-1.

The Indians travel to Great Bend on Tuesday.

Hays boys open WAC with win; girls fall late

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The 14th-ranked Fort Hays State wrestling team went 1-2 on the first day of the NWCA National Duals on Friday (Jan. 6). Fort Hays State fell 34-9 to fifth-ranked Lander University in the first round before claiming a comeback victory over No. 16 Colorado Mesa 20-19. The Tigers ended the day falling just short against ninth-ranked Upper Iowa by a score of 24-18. Sixth-ranked&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/cade-lindsey/7240">Cade Lindsey</a>&nbsp;(174) and third-ranked&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/tereus-henry/7220">Tereus Henry</a>&nbsp;(197) both finished the day 3-0 for the Tigers, each claiming wins over ranked wrestlers at their respective weight classes. In the opening round Lander took an early lead winning the first four matches with three ranked individuals, including three bonus-point wins to build a 20-0 lead.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/clint-herrick/7221">Clint Herrick</a>&nbsp;got the Tigers on the board at 157 pounds with a 2-1 decision over Bryson Ethington, but Lander put the dual out of reach claiming three of the next five matches. Two of their three wins in that stretch were by their other two ranked individuals. Lindsey and Henry each won their matches by decision to give the Tigers nine points. In the next round, FHSU continued to struggle early as Colorado Mesa won the first three matches with two bonus point wins.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/drew-burgoon/7249">Drew Burgoon</a>&nbsp;scored the first points for FHSU claiming a 9-7 decision at 149 pounds, but CMU answered with a decision at 157 pounds to take a 16-3 lead at the midway point of the dual. From the Tigers stormed back winning four of the final five matches.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/blaise-ronnau/7228">Blaise Ronnau</a>&nbsp;secured a fall at 165 pounds and Lindsey defeated seventh-ranked Alexander Holguin by 5-2 decision to bring the Tigers within four points. Colorado Mesa broke up the Fort Hays State run with a 7-6 decision at 184 pounds, but a pair of major decisions from Henry and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/tony-caldwell/7218">Tony Caldwell</a>&nbsp;completed the comeback and earned the Tigers their first dual victory of the season by a point.

In the final dual of the day, the Tigers struck first with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/kevin-honas/7244">Kevin Honas</a>&nbsp;claiming a 7-2 decision at 125 pounds. The Peacocks went on to win the next five matches including a fall and three technical falls building a 24-3 lead. FHSU won the final four matches including a third-period fall from Lindsey and a 6-4 decision by Henry over ninth-ranked Dalton Hahn, but the Tigers were unable to close the gap and fell short.

The Tigers will open day two of competition Saturday (Jan. 7) at 10 a.m. CT against Newberry for a chance to compete for ninth-place. Pending the result, the Tigers will face either McKendree or Gannon in their final match of the tournament at 2 p.m. CT.

Fort Hays State fell 34-9 to fifth-ranked Lander University in the first round before claiming a comeback victory over No. 16 Colorado Mesa 20-19. The Tigers ended the day falling just short against ninth-ranked Upper Iowa by a score of 24-18. Sixth-ranked&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/cade-lindsey/7240">Cade Lindsey</a>&nbsp;(174) and third-ranked&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/tereus-henry/7220">Tereus Henry</a>&nbsp;(197) both finished the day 3-0 for the Tigers, each claiming wins over ranked wrestlers at their respective weight classes. In the opening round Lander took an early lead winning the first four matches with three ranked individuals, including three bonus-point wins to build a 20-0 lead.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/clint-herrick/7221">Clint Herrick</a>&nbsp;got the Tigers on the board at 157 pounds with a 2-1 decision over Bryson Ethington, but Lander put the dual out of reach claiming three of the next five matches. Two of their three wins in that stretch were by their other two ranked individuals. Lindsey and Henry each won their matches by decision to give the Tigers nine points. In the next round, FHSU continued to struggle early as Colorado Mesa won the first three matches with two bonus point wins.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/drew-burgoon/7249">Drew Burgoon</a>&nbsp;scored the first points for FHSU claiming a 9-7 decision at 149 pounds, but CMU answered with a decision at 157 pounds to take a 16-3 lead at the midway point of the dual. From the Tigers stormed back winning four of the final five matches.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/blaise-ronnau/7228">Blaise Ronnau</a>&nbsp;secured a fall at 165 pounds and Lindsey defeated seventh-ranked Alexander Holguin by 5-2 decision to bring the Tigers within four points. Colorado Mesa broke up the Fort Hays State run with a 7-6 decision at 184 pounds, but a pair of major decisions from Henry and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/tony-caldwell/7218">Tony Caldwell</a>&nbsp;completed the comeback and earned the Tigers their first dual victory of the season by a point.In the final dual of the day, the Tigers struck first with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/kevin-honas/7244">Kevin Honas</a>&nbsp;claiming a 7-2 decision at 125 pounds. NEW YORK — The NFL has canceled the Bills and Bengals' week 17 game and announced their plans for playoff scenarios. 

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell informed all clubs of his decision on Thursday, after speaking with the Bills, the Bengals and NFL Players Association leadership.

“This has been a very difficult week,” Goodell said. “We continue to focus on the recovery of Damar Hamlin and are encouraged by the improvements in his condition as well as the tremendous outpouring of support and care for Damar and his family from across the country.  We are also incredibly appreciative of the amazing work of the medical personnel and commend each and every one of them.”

Canceling the game between the Bills and Bengals creates potential competitive inequities in certain playoff scenarios. The NFL says that in an effort to mitigate those "inequities," NFL clubs will consider Friday in a Special League Meeting a resolution recommended by the Commissioner and approved today by the Competition Committee, consisting of two elements: 

The AFC Championship Game will be played at a neutral site if the participating teams played an unequal number of games and both could have been the number one seed and hosted the game had all AFC clubs played a full 17-game regular season. Those circumstances involve Buffalo or Cincinnati qualifying for the game as a road team and are listed below:

Buffalo and Kansas City both win or both tie in week 18 – a Buffalo vs Kansas City championship game would be at a neutral site.

Buffalo and Kansas City both lose in week 18 and Baltimore wins or ties – a Buffalo vs Kansas City championship game would be at a neutral site.

Buffalo and Kansas City both lose in week 18 and Cincinnati wins – a Buffalo or Cincinnati vs Kansas City championship game would be at a neutral site.

If Baltimore defeats Cincinnati in Week 18 it will have defeated Cincinnati, a divisional opponent, twice but will not be able to host a playoff game because Cincinnati will have a higher winning percentage for a 16-game schedule than Baltimore will for a 17-game schedule. 

If Baltimore defeats Cincinnati and if those two clubs are scheduled to play a Wild Card game against one another, the site for that game would be determined by a coin toss. 

If Cincinnati wins the Week 18 game or if Baltimore and Cincinnati are not scheduled to play one another in the Wild Card round, the game sites would be determined by the regular scheduling procedures.

🏈 NFL releases scenarios after canceling Buffalo-Cincinnati game

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State saw its three-game win streak snapped by Missouri Southern on Thursday evening at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Lions took the contest by a score of 68-56, improving their win streak to five games and moved to 9-4 overall, 5-2 in the MIAA. FHSU is now 10-4 overall and 5-3 in the MIAA. The Tigers got out to a good start, building a 12-point lead of 26-14 by the 7:52 mark of the opening half. But from that point, the offense turned cold, scoring only two points the remainder of the half. The Lions went on an 18-2 run during the Tiger cold spell and took a 32-28 lead into halftime.

The Tigers pulled level with the Lions two times in the second half at the 15:58 and 15:11 marks, but a Winston Dessesow 3-point field goal put the Lions back up for good. The Lions eventually used a 7-0 burst to take a three-point lead to 10 with eight minutes remaining. The lead reached 14 four times inside the final five minutes as the Tigers could never find a run to make things interesting late. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/elijah-nnanabu/6902">Elijah Nnanabu</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/jaheim-holden/6906">Jaheim Holden</a>&nbsp;led the Tigers in scoring, each with 11 points, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/iyen-enaruna/6907">Iyen Enaruna</a>&nbsp;also reached double figures with 10. Nnanabu led in assists with four and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/bjarni-jonsson/6901">Bjarni Jonsson</a>&nbsp;had a team-high four rebounds.

The Lions shot a strong 52.3 percent from the field for the game, including a 9-of-20 effort beyond the 3-point line. The Lions were near perfect at the free-throw line, hitting 13-of-14 attempts. Vinson Sigmon Jr. led a balanced scoring effort for MSSU with 16 points, followed by Avery Taggart with 14. Christian Bundy and Dessesow each had 12.

Fort Hays State looks to rebound on Saturday when it hosts Pittsburg State. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Gorillas will enter at 5-9 overall, 2-6 in the MIAA.
