馃弨TMP opens 2023 with sweep of Sacred Heart

The TMP-Marian Monarchs earned a doubleheader sweep of the Sacred Heart Knights in Salina Friday night as both the boys and girls opened the 2023 calendar with a pair of wins.

GIRLS: TMP 55, Sacred Heart 30
The Lady Monarchs used a pair of double-digits runs on their way to a 55-30 win Friday night over the Sacred Heart Knights.

The Monarchs (2-3) opened the game with a 9-4 run and after Hannah Garcia converted on back-to-back field goals TMP led 13-9 at the end of the first quarter.

Sacred Heart (2-7) scored four straight points to open the second quarter tying the game at 13 but the Monarchs answered with a 10-0 run, sparked by a Brooke Koenigsman three pointer gave the Monarchs a 23-13 lead.

TMP extended the run to 16-4 to end the first half leading 29-17.

 Koenigsman scored 13 of hear career-high 20 points in the first half.

Sacred Heart cut the lead back to 10 to open the second half only to see TMP finish the third quarter on a 15-2 run and lead 44-21 through three quarters.

The Monarchs Jaci VonLintel scored seven straight to end the third quarter and open the fourth as the Monarchs closed out their second straight win, and their seventh straight over Sacred Heart 55-30.

Brooke Koenigsman led all scorers with 20 points. Jaci VonLintel recorded her fifth straight double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Hannah Garcia added a career-high nine points.

BOYS: TMP 62, Sacred Heart 44
The TMP boys ran their win streak to two straight games thanks to a career-night for Luke Rome and another big night from his fellow senior big man Dylan Werth as they beat Sacred Heart 62-44.

Sacred Heart (6-3) took an early 4-2 lead but the Monarchs answered with a 6-0 run to take an 8-4 lead and they neve trailed again.

TMP (3-2) took a five-point lead into the second quarter and in the second quarter Rome added six of his 10 first-half points and a three-pointer by Joey Mindrup helped to spark a 12-2 run that put TMP up 29-17.

The Monarchs largest lead was 12, on two different occasions in the first half and they led 31-23 at halftime.

After dealing with foul trouble in the first half Werth scored 11 of his game and season-high 24 in the third quarter helping TMP build a 49-38 lead into the fourth quarter.

Werth and Rome combined for 11 points in the fourth quarter as the Monarchs pulled away for a 62-44 win.

TMP will travel to Hoxie on Tuesday.
