COLBY - The Hays High Indians defeated the Goodland Cowboys 51-33 in the first round of the 38th annual Orange & Black Classic on Thursday evening in Colby. Chason VanDerWege and Dawson Ruder each scored 10 to lead the Indians’ offensive attack.
The Indians led 12-9 after the first quarter, before opening the second quarter on a 7-0 run to lead 19-9 with 4:15 remaining in the first half. The Cowboys were held without a field goal for over 12 minutes from the 5:26 mark of the first quarter to the 1:20 mark in the second period, as Hays High grew their lead to 21-11 in that stretch. The Indians would lead 21-13 at halftime.
Highlights
Hays High would step up their defensive intensity in the third quarter after Goodland pulled within nine, 25-18 with 5:30 left in the period. The Indians would score the games next 12 points, including eight points during that stretch by Kyzer Fox. Hays High extended its lead to 20 heading into the fourth quarter, 40-20.
Goodland would try to make a run in the final frame, but Hays High’s lead was too much to overcome. Ruder scored 10 points to help lead the Indians, eight of which came down the stretch in the fourth frame.

Hays High shot 41% from the floor, while holding Goodland to 24%. The Indians held Goodland’s Manny Gonzalez in check, after going for 21 last Friday, he scored just three points against HHS.
The Indians will play Olathe North on Friday afternoon at 4:45pm in the winners bracket semifinal. The Eagles defeated Ulysses, 71-35.
