team finished third at the Goodland Invitational Tuesdaay at the Sugar Hills
Country Club. The Monarchs fired a 392 which was 18 shots behind second place
Colby and 31 back of first place Hoxie.

Landon Rozean battled high winds to
tie for fourth place with a 91. He finished one stroke behind third place
finisher Eli Koerperich of Colby. Hoxie’s Ashton Dowell won the individual title
with an 83. Tucker Metcalf of Ulysses finished second with an 87.

TMP’s Heuer Brungardt tied for 18th
with a 99. Pake Dewey tied for 21st with a 100.

HAYS - Hays High hosted Great Bend in a single game on a windy, hot April afternoon.

Dalton Dale crushed a pair of two-run homers and drove in six total as the Indians beat Great Bend 16-6 in six innings.&nbsp;

The first four Indian batters scored in the bottom of the first as Hays never trailed. Garrett Wellbrock walked and then scored on a Dylan Dreiling single. Dalton Dale hit his first home run followed by a line drive home run by Derek Riggs.

Great Bend cut the lead in half in the top of the third inning at 4-2 before Hays plated one in the third and three more in the fourth for a 8-2 advantage.

The Indians led 10-5 after the top half of the sixth inning. They scored six runs, all with two outs, in the bottom half of the frame. Dalton Dale hit the first pitch he saw from the fourth Panther pitcher over the left field fence for a 16-6 run rule victory.

Wellbrock, Dale and Noah Weimer each scored three runs. Dreiling and Dale each recorded three hits while Carson Spray and Weimer had two.&nbsp;

Spray (2-0) took the victory working five innings. Bradyn Dreher pitched the sixth. Hays improves to 5-1 and is 4-1 in conference play. Great Bend falls to 5-2 and 2-1 in the WAC.

The second game of the series will be played in Great Bend on Thursday, April 21.&nbsp;

NEW ORLEANS - The Fort Hays State track and field teams both rank in the top 20 in Division II in this week's USTFCCCA Outdoor National Rating Index, released Tuesday (April 12) by the coaches association. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The only big mistake that Cleveland rookie Steven Kwan has made during his first four big league games came in left field, where he was trying to rush a catch-and-throw to the plate and had a flyball bounce off the heel of his glove.

He hasn't made many mistakes with a bat in his hands.

And after that gaffe in the outfield Monday, the 24-year-old from Oregon State came right back to belt a bases-loaded triple, becoming the first player to reach base at least three times in each of his first four games while leading the rechristened Guardians to a 10-7 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

“He was trying to do it a little too quick and it hit the heel of his glove. But then his at-bat was terrific," Guardians manager Terry Francona said. “His at-bats are really, really good. That’s stating the obvious.”

Might as well drive home the point: Kwan went 5 for 5 and reached safely six times a day earlier, when Cleveland rolled to a 17-3 win over the Royals. He reached base three more times and added his first three RBIs on Monday, finishing the series 9 for 13, reaching base in 15 of 19 plate appearances and scoring four times.

“Pretty cool,” Kwan said in his typical understated manner. “Pretty surreal.”

Oscar Mercado added a two-run homer for the Guardians, who scored just once over the first two games in Kansas City but piled up 27 runs over the last two. The result was a split of the season-opening set between AL Central rivals.

“I'm done trying to figure this out,” Francona said of the scoring disparity.

Logan Allen (1-0) earned the win Monday with two scoreless innings of relief in his first appearance of the season.

The finale was tied 4-all in the seventh when Royals reliever Jake Brentz (0-1) gave up a single, sacrifice bunt and walk. Josh Staumont then gave up bloop singles to Jose Ramirez and Franmil Reyes as Cleveland took a 6-4 lead.

The Royals loaded the bases in the bottom half against Bryan Shaw before Hunter Dozier hit a flyball that Kwan dropped. As a run crossed the plate, Myles Straw threw out a runner at second base in a bang-bang play that stood upon video review. Nick Sandlin relieved and got Adalberto Mondesi to ground into an inning-ending double play.

“Just tried to do too much,” Kwan said of the flyball that got away from him.

Not to worry. Kwan atoned for the mistake with his triple in the eighth inning.

“He’s a tough out. You can tell that already,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said.

Kwan's now gone 72 plate appearances, including Triple-A and spring training, since his last strikeout, and his 15 times on base through his first four games is the most since in the major leagues since at least 1901.

“There are a lot of player development people who have their chest out right now, as they should,” Francona said. “I know we’re four games in, but every single one of them kept saying ‘Hey, he’s going to be OK, man.’ So I know they’re proud.”

Mercado also had a big finish to the series. He hit a grand slam and had five RBIs in the Guardians' 17-3 romp Sunday, then drilled a two-run homer into the left-field bullpen to give Cleveland a 4-1 lead in the fourth on Monday.

“I mean, shoot, man, we're rooting for everybody,” Francona said. “We're not biased. We want everybody to do well.”

The Royals answered Mercado's latest shot in their typical fashion: They scratched and clawed and scrapped for runs. It took two singles, a walk, a sacrifice bunt, a stolen base, an error and a run-scoring groundout, but the Royals managed to coax three runs in the fourth inning to even the score 4-all.

Only one of the four runs off Cleveland starter Aaron Civale was earned, and he left after 3 1/3 innings. Carlos Hernandez lasted another inning for Kansas City but was responsible for all four runs that he allowed.

Guardians OF Josh Naylor was 3 for 13 through four games at Triple-A Columbus as he continues to work his way back from a right ankle injury. He is expected to play two more games in the minors this week before being reevaluated.

The Royals reinstated RHP Joel Payamps from the family emergency list and optioned RHP Jackson Kowar to Triple-A Omaha. Kowar, who will start in the minors, allowed seven runs on 11 hits and a walk in 3 1/3 innings of relief Sunday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Cleveland Guardians won for the first time with their new name as hot-starting rookie Steven Kwan went 5 for 5 on Sunday in a 17-3 romp over the Kansas City Royals.

Oscar Mercado hit a grand slam during a five-RBI performance, and Owen Miller drove in a career-high four runs. Cleveland had lost its first two games since changing this season to the Guardians from the Indians, its name since 1915.

Kwan had four singles and a double, was hit by a pitch and scored four runs. The 24-year-old outfielder made his major league debut on Opening Day and is 8 for 10 in three games so far, reaching base in 12 of 14 plate appearances.

“I know it’s three games in, but nobody wants to not get excited,” Guardians manager Terry Francona said. "When our young guys want to do things like that, it is exciting.”

Kwan hit .469 in spring training after batting a combined .301 in three minor league seasons.

“I’m not surprised about what (Kwan) is doing,” Mercado said. “He is such a good player, knows himself and knows what he can do. He is such a sparkplug, and it is going to be awesome to watch him play this year.”

Held to a total of one run while dropping the first two games of the series, Cleveland broke loose with 22 hits. José Ramírez, who homered and had three hits, and Amed Rosario, who had four hits, each drove in three runs.

“It was good for everybody to let our offense loosen up a little bit,” Francona said.

Mercado connected for his first career grand slam off Taylor Clarke in the first inning, capping a six-run burst. The Guardians made it 10-0 in the second, and Mercado added an RBI triple in the fourth.

Ramírez and Miller each contributed three hits.

Pitching with a huge cushion, Cal Quantrill (1-0) tossed five innings and allowed two runs and four hits.

Kris Bubic (0-1) got just two outs and was tagged for five runs on three hits with two walks.

Three Tiger pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts in the contest, the most in a game since February 2021 (17 vs. Pittsburg State, 2/28/21). <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6324">Hunter Parker</a>&nbsp;worked around a hit and a walk to strike out the side in a scoreless first inning before the Tigers jumped on top with two runs in the home half.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6619">Tico Olivas</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6318">Brady Kreutzer</a>&nbsp;both singled, bringing&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6624">Trip Pennington</a>&nbsp;to the plate with two outs. This time the Tigers fell short of Newman in conference action even though they put up a strong fight in singles play trying to battle back from a 1-0 deficit after doubles. Despite the Jets earning a team point early in doubles, the No. 1 FHSU team of&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6675">Irina Alfonso</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6357">Maria Paz Diaz</a>&nbsp;handled their opponents convincingly with a 6-1 win. 🎾 Paz Diaz and Mendez win tiebreaks again, Tigers come up short of Jets

WICHITA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State track and field team saw one school record go down in addition to posting five provisional performances on the final day of the KT Woodman Invitational Saturday. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6538">Lyric Holman</a>&nbsp;shaved five-hundredths of one second off her school record in the 100m dash, placing first out of 71 competitors with a wind-aided time of 11.41. The time would be the fastest in the nation in DII so far this season if it wasn't for the plus-5.8 wind reading at the time of the race. The junior also placed ninth overall and third amongst DII competition in the 200m dash with a time of 24.73. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6537">Alexandra Hart</a>&nbsp;cleared a season-best height of 5-8 in the high jump, good for an NCAA DII provisional qualifying mark and second place overall. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6555">Chloe Stanley</a>&nbsp;was seventh in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:05.62, faster than all but one DII opponent in the field. Additionally, she was 13th in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.91. On the men's side,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6513">Ryan Stanley</a>&nbsp;finished second in the pole vault with a huge provisional mark of 17-0.75. He is just the fifth individual in DII to clear 17 feet so far this outdoor season.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6485">Jacob Clark</a>&nbsp;also surpassed the provisional height in the pole vault, placing fifth with a top clearance of 16-8.75. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/index.aspx">FHSU Athletics</a>WICHITA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State track and field team saw one school record go down in addition to posting five provisional performances on the final day of the KT Woodman Invitational Saturday. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6538">Lyric Holman</a>&nbsp;shaved five-hundredths of one second off her school record in the 100m dash, placing first out of 71 competitors with a wind-aided time of 11.41. The time would be the fastest in the nation in DII so far this season if it wasn't for the plus-5.8 wind reading at the time of the race. The junior also placed ninth overall and third amongst DII competition in the 200m dash with a time of 24.73. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6537">Alexandra Hart</a>&nbsp;cleared a season-best height of 5-8 in the high jump, good for an NCAA DII provisional qualifying mark and second place overall. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6555">Chloe Stanley</a>&nbsp;was seventh in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:05.62, faster than all but one DII opponent in the field. Additionally, she was 13th in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.91. On the men's side,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6513">Ryan Stanley</a>&nbsp;finished second in the pole vault with a huge provisional mark of 17-0.75. He is just the fifth individual in DII to clear 17 feet so far this outdoor season.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6485">Jacob Clark</a>&nbsp;also surpassed the provisional height in the pole vault, placing fifth with a top clearance of 16-8.75. 👟 Holman breaks 100m record in Wichita

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State held on a for a 7-6 win in game one before falling in game two 8-0 to Emporia State on Saturday in Hays. The Tigers are now 17-22-1 overall and 3-9 in the MIAA, while the Hornets stayed level overall on the year at 20-20, now 9-7 in the MIAA.

Game 1: Fort Hays State 7, Emporia State 6 Emporia State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning as&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6352">Savanah Egger</a>&nbsp;tried to work through some command issues. She got a pair of strikeouts in the inning, but yielded two straight bases loaded walks with two outs.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=1030">Adrian Pilkington</a>&nbsp;opted to go to&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6351">Morgan Schmidt</a>&nbsp;in relief and the Hornets tacked on an RBI single, but Egger would be critical for a Tiger win later when Schmidt ran into some trouble late.

Schmidt would go on to hold the Hornets scoreless from Emporia State's final out in the first to its final out of the sixth. Meanwhile, the Tigers orchestrated a comeback in the bottom of the second when their first run scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6342">Jessica Espinoza</a>.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6635">Regan Curry</a>&nbsp;scored the run on what was deemed catcher's interference for not providing a viable path to the plate. Right after that, the floodgates burst open as&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6347">Adysen Burghart</a>&nbsp;hit a flare RBI single to right field and then a throwing error by the second baseman back across the diamond allowed Espinoza to score as well. Moments later,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6355">Madison Pierce</a>&nbsp;doubled to left center to bring Burghart home, putting the Tigers up 4-3. The Tigers tacked on single runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Pierce collected her second RBI of the game in the fifth on a sacrifice fly. Espinoza added her second RBI of the game in the fifth on a single.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6635">Regan Curry</a>&nbsp;joined the RBI act in the sixth on a fielder's choice. Schmidt was tremendous in relief for the Tigers, throwing 5.1 innings. However, she finally started to run out of gas in the seventh when she allowed two walks and a home run to start the inning, instantly turning the contest into a one-run game at 7-6. After Schmidt allowed one more hit, Egger re-entered the game to pitch and shook off her early game struggles to get three straight flyouts to end the game. Schmidt's gritty relief effort netted her sixth win of the season, while Egger picked up her fourth save of the season. Colby CC plans summer volleyball tournaments

HAYS - Dalton Dale and Derek Riggs both homered to lead the Hays High Indians to a 15-3 run-rule win in game one of their home-opening doubleheader against Garden City Friday at Hays High School. The Buffaloes turned the tables in game two, scoring 12-runs in the fourth&nbsp; inning to defeat the Indians 16-10.

The Indians are now 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Buffaloes move to 5-4 and 2-2 in the WAC.

Game 1: Hays 15, Garden City 3 (5 innings) Dalton Dale gave the Indians a 2-1 lead in the first with a two-run blast over the left field fence. They added four in the second to go up 6-1. Noah Weimer drove in the first run with a single to left. He and Garrett Wellbrock would later score on a Dylan Dreiling double. Dreiling scored on a double off the bat of Dale.

After the Buffaloes scored two in the third, the Indians answered with five in the fourth. Wellbrock, Dreiling, Dale and Riggs all singled to start the inning. Then with one out, Bradyn Dreher singled to right driving in two runs. Jack Fields scored the final run of the frame on a double steal attempt.

Riggs ended the game early with a grand slam in the fifth. It came after a double by Wellbrock, an intentional walk to Dreiling and Dale was hit by a pitch.

Wellbrock and Dale each had three of the Indians 15 hits. Riggs drove in five runs and Dale four. Dreiling and Dreher both drove in a pair of runs.

Wellbrock (2-0) allowed one earned run on seven hits and picked up the win. He matched his career strikeout total with eight while walking only one.

Game 2: Garden City 16, Hays 10 The Buffaloes scored four in the first then used a 12-run fourth to build a 16-5 lead then held on the rest of the way. Garden City had eight hits in the decisive inning and took advantage of four hit batters and two walks.

The Indians scored three in the first then added single runs in the second and third to take a 5-4 lead. Dalton Dale hit his second two-run homer of the night then Brayden Dreher scoring Keaton Barnett in the first.

Garrett Wellbrock scored from third on a passed ball to tie the game in the second then the Indians scored the go-ahead run on a double-play in the third.

Hays scored a single run in the fourth on Dylan Dreiling fifth home run of the season. They would added four in the fifth but couldn't get any more the rest of the way.

Blake Schmidt suffered the loss, allowing 12 runs (11 earned) on nine hit with five strikeouts and two walks. Dalton Dale gave up four runs without recording an out. Keaton Barnett pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings to close out the game.

Dreiling scored on a double off the bat of Dale.After the Buffaloes scored two in the third, the Indians answered with five in the fourth. Wellbrock, Dreiling, Dale and Riggs all singled to start the inning. Then with one out, Bradyn Dreher singled to right driving in two runs. Jack Fields scored the final run of the frame on a double steal attempt.Riggs ended the game early with a grand slam in the fifth. It came after a double by Wellbrock, an intentional walk to Dreiling and Dale was hit by a pitch.Wellbrock and Dale each had three of the Indians 15 hits. Riggs drove in five runs and Dale four. Dreiling and Dreher both drove in a pair of runs.Wellbrock (2-0) allowed one earned run on seven hits and picked up the win. Dalton Dale hit his second two-run homer of the night then Brayden Dreher scoring Keaton Barnett in the first.Garrett Wellbrock scored from third on a passed ball to tie the game in the second then the Indians scored the go-ahead run on a double-play in the third.Hays scored a single run in the fourth on Dylan Dreiling fifth home run of the season. They would added four in the fifth but couldn't get any more the rest of the way.Blake Schmidt suffered the loss, allowing 12 runs (11 earned) on nine hit with five strikeouts and two walks. Dalton Dale gave up four runs without recording an out. Keaton Barnett pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings to close out the game.

⚾ Indians split home opener with Garden City

HOLCOMB - TMP-Marian's seventh inning rally fell one run short Friday, losing game two of their doubleheader in Holcomb 7-6. The Longhorns raced out to an early three-run lead and won the opener 4-1.

TMP-Marian has lost three of its last four and is now 3-3 on the season.

Game 1: Holcomb 4, TMP-Marian 1 The Longhorns scored a run in the first and two in the second which proved to be all they would need for the win. They added one more in the fifth before the Monarchs scored on a Jaci VonLintel homer in the sixth.

Hannah Garcia had the only other hit for TMP on a third inning single. The Monarchs struck out 12 times.

Madison Augustine allowed one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts and three walks.

Game 2: Holcomb 7, TMP-Marian 6 The Monarchs rallied with two in the top of the seventh and had the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position before a groundout ended the game.

TMP-Marian grabbed the early lead, scoring four in the top of the first. Their first five batters all reached base. After Halle Dreiling and Hannah Garcia walked, Brooke Koeningsman tripled to give the Monarchs a 2-0 lead. Jaci VonLintel followed with an RBI double to push the lead to 3-0. TMP scored the fourth run on an inning-ending double play.

The Longhorns scored a run in the bottom of the first then tied the game with three in the third. They would take the lead on a solo homer in the fifth and lead 7-4 heading into the seventh.

TMP loaded the bases in the seventh with no outs. After Sophie Allen singled, Taylor Marvin and Halle Dreiling were both hit by pitches. Hannah Garcia reached on a error on a fly ball to right which scored a run. Jaci VonLintel drove in the second run on a groundout but Alexa Ryersee's groundout to to second ended the game.
