HAYS - Kaleb Hammeke hit two free throws with five seconds to play then the Tigers held off a couple shot attempts in the closing seconds to beat MSU Denver 68-66 Sunday afternoon at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

Fort Hays State (3-1) led for the majority of the game but could never pull away from the Roadrunners (2-2) who hit a couple of free throws with five seconds to play in the first half to take a one-point lead into halftime.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/bjarni-jonsson/6901">Bjarni Jonsson</a>&nbsp;put the Tigers in front for good on a jumper in the paint with 16:53 remaining which sparked an 8-0 run. Their lead grew to&nbsp;10 with just over eight minutes to play. The Roadrunners answered with a 7-0 run over the next two minutes to pull within three then later got as close as two with 4:35 remaining. The Tigers scored the next six to go up eight with 2:43 to go. but MSU Denver countered with another 7-0 run to pull within one with seven seconds to play.

Hammeke hit both ends of a 1-and-1 to push the lead to three. They then sent the Roadrunners to the free throw line with three seconds left. Brayden Maldonado hit the front end of the 1-and-1 then intentionally missed the second which MSU Denver rebounded but they missed&nbsp; a short jumper from the right baseline and a tip attempt at the horn.

Elijah Nnanabu led the Tigers in scoring with 14 points. Iyen Enaruna added 13 pionts, Hammke had 12 and Bjarni Jonsson 10. Enaruna grabbed a team-best six rebounds and had three steals, Hammeke dished out four assists and also had three steals. UC Davis transfer Caleb McGill led the Roadrunners with 22 points. Jaden Kennis added 12, all in the second half and Tyrei Randall had 11, 12 below his season average.

🏀 Tigers hold off MSU Denver

After five years as head football coach at Larned High School, Tad Remy
announced his resignation at the end of the 2022-2023 school year. Tad and his
wife recently welcomed their fourth child, and felt the timing was best to
pursue other goals for their family. 
“There are things we’ve wanted for us and for our family,” said Remy. “There’s
probably never a perfect time to pull the trigger, but we had some
conversations and felt like we needed to make the move now.” 
Remy graduated from Kansas State University in the fall of 2011, wrapping up
his student teaching in his pursuit to become a teacher and coach. He applied
for jobs at Moundridge, Hill City, West Franklin and Larned. 
“Larned was the first one to call me,” said Remy. “I accepted the job and went
to Larned right before spring break in 2012. I was introduced to A.B. Stokes,
who was just hired as the head coach at the time. I didn’t know if I was going
to be able to get onto the high school staff.”

After talking with Stokes over football philosophy and what they valued 
in a
football program, Remy was hired to join the high school staff. Stokes 
would eventually leave, now the coach Bethel College, and Remy took over
 as Larned head coach in
2018. 
Remy posted a 14-31 record in his five years at Larned and qualified for the
playoffs three times. Spending 11 years overall with the Larned
program, telling players and community members the news was not easy. 
“I was running some errands Thursday morning, and I saw Luke Fischer (junior
running back this fall for the Indians) around the corner,” said Remy. “I
thought I was going to be good and stay composed. I saw Luke and knew it was
going to be tough.” 
Prior to telling the team, Remy walked down a different hallway and went to the
gym the backway through the laundry room to compose himself before relaying the
message. 
“It was tough,” said Remy. “I wanted the message to be my conversation and not
for people to hear it from other avenues. Ultimately, I had to do it for real
and look them in the eye.” 
Remy is completing a master’s degree in history and said his plans after the
school year are unknown, but he still wants to coach going forward. 
“Coaching kids and teaching kids is a big part of who I am,” said Remy. “Everyone
probably thinks I’m going to go to Bethel College and coach with Stokes, and I
have had conversations with him. Eventually, things will filter out there,
hopefully sooner rather than later. I’m excited for the future.”&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

The Tigers won both regular season meetings that year, a season in which the Tigers finished 27-4 overall and reached No. 1 in the national rankings during the regular season. CHIEFS PLAYER TO WATCH: RB Isiah Pacheco, a seventh-round pick out of Rutgers, has supplanted 2020 first-round pick Clyde Edwards-Helaire atop the Kansas City depth chart. Pacheco ran 16 times for 82 yards a week ago against Jacksonville, which kept the Jaguars from selling out to stop Patrick Mahomes and the passing game. Edwards-Helaire was targeted twice without a catch and did not have a carry in the game.

CHARGERS PLAYER TO WATCH: OLB Khalil Mack, who got his seventh sack of the season against San Francisco, tends to save his best when facing Kansas City. He has 7 1/2 sacks in 10 meetings, picking up at least a half sack in six straight games. Mack brought down Mahomes once in the Week 2 loss, and he also had one of his nine tackles for loss for the season.

KEY MATCHUP: Chargers LT Jamaree Salyer vs. Chiefs DE Frank Clark. Los Angeles has been one-dimensional on offense, as demonstrated by its 37 drop-backs to 16 rush attempts against San Francisco. That imbalance puts a premium on pass protection, with rookie Salyer in a critical role. The Chargers gave up two sacks in the first half against the 49ers that forced them to settle for field goals when touchdowns could have put the game out of reach early. Clark had his best game of the season with 1 1/2 sacks against San Francisco before serving a two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. He is expected to return to the starting lineup, giving him a chance to end a run of three straight games against Los Angeles without a sack.

KEY INJURIES: Chiefs WR JuJu Smith-Schuster and CB Chris Lammons are in concussion protocol. WR Mecole Hardman is dealing with an abdominal injury. WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling missed practice with an illness this week. ... Chargers WR Keenan Allen (hamstring) and Mike Williams (ankle) are back at practice this week. Allen missed seven of the past eight games, making a brief return against Seattle in Week 7 before aggravating the injury. OLB Chris Rumph II should play after sitting out the past two games because of a sprained MCL. RT Trey Pipkins III (knee) has a better chance of playing this week after being pulled following warmups in San Francisco.

SERIES NOTES: Kansas City has won in overtime in both of its visits to SoFi Stadium, outlasting Los Angeles 23-20 in 2020 and 34-28 last December. ... This has mostly been a series of streaks since 2012. There was a run of four straight wins for the Chargers, followed by nine straight for the Chiefs in a stretch where they claimed 12 of 13. Los Angeles then took two in a row, before Kansas City won the past two meetings. ... In the past eight meetings, six have been decided by one possession.

STATS AND STUFF: Kansas City has won 11 straight games in November, a streak that began with a 24-17 win over the Chargers on Nov. 18, 2019, in Mexico City. ... The Chiefs have eclipsed 300 yards in 14 consecutive games, the third-longest streak in franchise history. ... Kansas City was not penalized last week against Jacksonville for the fourth time in its history. ... Mahomes threw four TD passes against the Jaguars, giving him 16 such games in his first 75 starts. He also has won 57 of his first 75 starts, trailing only Ken Stabler (58) for the most over that span to begin a career. ... Chiefs WR Kadarius Toney scored his first NFL touchdown last week in his second game since arriving in a trade with the Giants. ... FANTASY TIP: Ekeler seems likely to get back into the end zone this week after having his run of five straight games with at least one touchdown snapped by San Francisco. His 30 scrimmage touchdowns over the past two seasons leads the NFL.

HAYS - Olivia Hollenbeck and Ellie Stearns both scored in double-figures and the Fort Hays State women's basketball team used a dominant second half to defeat Colorado Mesa 75-50 Saturday afternoon at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

The Tigers (3-3) missed five of their first six shots and fell behind by six but a 12-0 second quarter run gave them a nine point lead. Colorado Mesa (0-3) got as close as three early in the third quarter but the Tigers outscored the Mavericks 30-4 over the last seven minutes of the third quarter and the first four minutes of the fourth, hitting 11-of-20 from the floor while forcing nine turnovers and limiting CMU to 1-of-9 shooting.

Olivia Hollenbeck led the Tigers with 16 points. Ellie Stearns hit three 3-pointers and added 13. Kate Dilsaver knocked down a couple of 3-pointers and came off the bench to score nine. Katie Wagner had her string of double-doubles snapped, scoring eight points along with 10 rebounds.

The Tigers shot 41.4-percent from the floor (24-58) and had a season-high nine 3-pointers going 9-for-23 from beyond the arc. They also scored 24 points off of 19 CMU turnovers .

Fort Hays State will continue its five-game home stand next Saturday when the Tigers host Tabor at 5 p.m. in the first men's and women's doubleheader of the season.&nbsp;&nbsp;

🏀 Big second half carries Tiger women past Colorado Mesa

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Bijan Robinson ran for career-highs of 243 yards and four touchdowns, helping Texas earn a bit of revenge against Kansas with a 55-14 victory Saturday that kept alive the Longhorns' hopes of playing for the Big 12 championship.

The Longhorns (7-4, 5-3), who lost a 57-56 overtime thriller to the Jayhawks a year ago in Austin, need to beat Baylor next weekend while, coincidentally, getting some help from Kansas. The Jayhawks (6-5, 3-5) must also beat Kansas State in their rivalry game for Texas to play fourth-ranked TCU in the title game in Arlington.

Quinn Ewers added 107 yards passing and a touchdown, and Jonathon Brooks ran for 108 yards and two scores, as the Longhorns bounced back from a dismal game against the Horned Frogs in which they didn't score an offensive touchdown.

They scored on nine straight possessions after an opening punt and finished with 427 yards rushing.

The Jayhawks' Jalon Daniels, starting for the first time since a shoulder injury six weeks ago, threw for 230 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Devin Neal ran 13 times for 51 yards.

Robinson, who was held to 29 yards rushing by the Horned Frogs, eclipsed that total midway through the first quarter Saturday, then kept on going. He bulldozed into the end zone from 2-yards out to give the Longhorns the lead, then ripped off two long runs on their next possession to extend the advantage to 14-0.

Robinson nearly had a third first-half TD run, but it was called back by a penalty and Texas had to kick a field goal.

The Jayhawks were hoping to get a boost from the return of Daniels, who had them off to a 5-0 start before his injury on Oct. 8. But they went 3-and-out on their first two drives, failed on fourth-and-2 on the next one, then had a TD wiped out by a penalty and watched Jacob Borcila miss the ensuing field-goal try.

Ewers added a touchdown pass to Keilan Robinson later in the second quarter. And after Daniels was picked off by Jaylan Ford, the Longhorns turned again to Robinson, who appeared to have scurried 25 yards for a touchdown but was ruled out at the 1-yard line with 1 second left in the half — then leapt over the pile on the next play anyway.

Robinson had 172 yards and three touchdowns as Texas took a 31-0 lead to the locker room.

The junior tailback scored from 32 yards out on the first possession of the second half for his first career four-touchdown day, and Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian soon gave Robinson the rest of the night off.

But despite playing just 2 1/2 quarters, his big game against the Jayhawks sent him climbing through the school record book. Robinson tied Chris Gilbert for fifth in career rushing with 3,231 yards, and Robinson’s 39 career scores is tied with Jamaal Charles and Roy Williams for fourth in school history.

It was senior day at Kansas, where the Jayhawks bid farewell to a senior class that included several players who endured multiple coaching changes. That included defensive tackle Sam Burt, who played two seasons for David Beaty, two more for Les Miles and the past two seasons for Lance Leipold.

The Longhorns face the Bears next Saturday. The Jayhawks head down Interstate 70 to play the Wildcats.

West Virginia's Garrett Greene got the nod ahead of JT Daniels after Greene's solid play in the second half of a win over Oklahoma a week ago. Greene threw three TD passes to Sam James and finished 15 of 27 passes for 204 yards. He was intercepted twice. Greene also scored on a 13-yard run.

Kansas State led 28-19 after the first quarter. Mason’s 37-yard interception return put the Wildcats up 14-0 a little more than 3 minutes into the game. Later in the quarter, West Virginia’s Malachi Ruffin returned an interception 43 yards for a score. But West Virginia couldn't mount a comeback.

By halftime, Kansas State had 312 total yards and led 41-25. It was the highest scoring first half by the Wildcats since scoring 45 against Montana State in 2008, and the most allowed by West Virginia since allowing 56 to Baylor in 2013.

The offenses slowed down considerably after halftime.

Hays High entered the state semi-finals for just the third time in school history. The #3 Indians traveled to #1 Maize on Friday night. Hays the second seed in 5A West and the Eagles the top seed.

35 unanswered points for Maize propelled them to a 42-9 win.

Hays forced two early turnovers against a Maize team that had three in the previous 11 games. Remy Stull intercepted a pass on the first drive by the Eagles and returned it to the four. Kyreese Groen scored two plays later for a 7-0 lead.

Maize marched the field on their next possession for a 7-7 tie. The Indians worked inside the Maize 10 but turned the ball over on downs at the seven. Hays chased Avery Johnson back into the end zone were a penalty was eventually called an a safety awarded to Hays for a 9-7 lead.

The Hays offense couldn't move the ball on their next two drives and Maize struck twice on short runs for a 21-9 lead. The Indians just missed on a half back pass in the end zone as the first half expired.]

Hays played the second half without Malik Bah who broke the single season rushing record in the first half.

The Indians punted on the first drive of the second half, but the punt was blocked and returned for a Maize touchdown. The Eagles started every drive in the second half in Hays territory as the Indians went for 4th down but failed to convert.&nbsp;

COLBY — The Trojans men's cross country team continues to be honored after winning the national championship on Nov. 12. This week, the U.S. Track &amp; Field and Cross Country Coaches Association named Sanele Masondo the Men's Athlete of the Year and Brady Johnson the Men's Coach of the Year. Member coaches voted on the awards following the NJCAA Division I Cross Country Championships.

Masondo, a sophomore from Kwazulu Natal, South Africa, capped his undefeated season with the individual title at the 2022 NJCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in 24:07.2. He also won the individual title at the Region VI Cross Country Championships in 23:31.6, as well as the Greeno/Dirksen Invitational and the Chile Pepper Festival. Twice during the season, he was the USTFCCCA athlete of the week.

Under Johnson, the Trojans won the program's first national championship and the school's first team crown since 1999. Led by individual winner Masondo, the Trojans dominated the NJCAA Cross Country Division I Championships with four top-10 finishers to score 38 points and win by 87 points. Colby also claimed the title at the Region VI Cross Country Championships, winning by 42 points.

Johnson has coached at Colby Community College since 2019. The Plainville native led his squad to a 2021 region championship and a third-place finish at the national meet.

🏈 Texas tries to keep Big 12 title hopes alive at Kansas

The game that featured nine ties and five lead changes. Jessie Sallach tied it up 63-63 on a Jessie Sallach 15-footer from the right wing with 3.4 seconds to play but the Mavericks scored on the last possession to avenge their first-round NCAA Tournament loss to the Tigers last season.

It's the first time the Tigers have lost on a buzzer-beater since November 22, 2008 at Nebraska-Kearney on a Jade Meads last second shot.

Minnesota State (2-0) used an 11-1 first quarter run to build an early seven point lead. A 12-2 run in the second quarter pushed their lead to 10 with a little over a minute to play in the first half. The built a couple of 10-point leads early in the third before the Tigers responded with an 18-2 run to go up six with 3:50 to play in the third. Minnesota State bounced back with the next two baskets to close within one before each team scored in the final minute of the third period, giving the Tigers a slim 47-46 lead entering the fourth quarter. Neither team led by more than one possession in the fourth. Fort Hays State led by three early in the fourth following a Sallach layup before a big corner 3-pointer from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/megan-earney/6842">Megan Earney</a>&nbsp;gave the Tigers another three-point advantage with less than two minutes to play. But the Mavericks answered back each time, including a game-tying 3-pointer mere seconds after Earney's make.

Katie Wagner recorded her NCAA Divison II leading fourth double-double with 17 and 11 rebounds.&nbsp;Sallach added a season-high 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting. Freshman Ellie Stearns hit three 3s and score nine. Fellow freshman Brooke Loewe dished out seven assists.

🏀 Tiger women fall to No. 15 Minnesota State on buzzer-beater

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Jalen Wilson scored a career-high 33 points and No. 6 Kansas survived a letdown against Southern Utah, hanging on for an 82-76 victory on Friday night.

Wilson set a career best for a second straight game after scoring 25 points in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-college-basketball-kansas-duke-blue-devils-mens-5be2b7ba78167ca521fe8b8e7b866fb7">the Jayhawks' 69-64 win over No. 7 Duke</a>&nbsp;in Indianapolis on Tuesday night. The Thunderbirds (3-2) didn't figure to provide as tough a challenge, but they hung with Kansas (4-0) until the final minute at Allen Fieldhouse.

“He was terrific,” interim coach Norm Roberts said. “He was really efficient. He made some big plays for us.”

That was about it for praise from Roberts after the game.

“We weren’t very good, but give them credit,” he said. “They played really well. They made some key shots. We were just off in everything we did.

“They played exactly how we thought they were going to play. We just didn’t have good body movement and we talked about that before the game. We had so many ill-advised turnovers that they did nothing to cause. We’ve got to clean up a lot of that.”

The Jayhawks had their biggest lead of the game, 77-69, with 2:11 remaining. Southern Utah responded with a 7-0 run, including five straight points by Tevian Jones, to get within one point with 1:03 left.

Gradey Dick's 3-pointer with 40.6 seconds remaining made it 80-76 and Southern Utah didn't make another basket.

“I knew it was a close game, obviously,” Dick said. “KJ (Adams) got the offensive rebound. I felt open and took the shot.”

Roberts coached his final game for Kansas in place of Bill Self, who served the last of his school-imposed four-game suspension stemming from recruiting violations first uncovered in a federal investigation.

He said he's not concerned about how the Jayhawks will respond to their close call.

“We always turn negatives into positives,” he said. “I know Coach (Self) can’t wait to get into practice and get that started. It’s always good when you can get a win and learn from a win, rather than learning from a loss.

“Coach talks about this all the time. There’s going to be 10 games that you’re going to play lights-out and there’s no way you’re going to lose. There’s going to be 10 games that you’re going to be average and you’ve got to find a way to win. And then there’s going to be 10 games when you’re going to play bad. Now you’ve got to find a way to be 7-3 in those 10 games.

“Tonight was definitely one of those games.”

Jones scored 25 points for Southern Utah, Maizen Fausett added 14 and Harrison Butler had 12.

The Jayhawks got 18 points from Dick and 14 from Dajuan Harris.

Southern Utah outrebounded Kansas 45-41, including 14-6 on the offensive glass. The Thunderbirds hit four of their first seven 3-point attempts to build a 22-16 lead in the first half. Wilson had the final two baskets before halftime to give the Jayhawks a 41-39 edge.

“I was just trying to get the ball moving and get to the paint,” Wilson said. “I didn’t want to settle for shots. That’s something we emphasized. We knew they didn’t have any shot-blockers, so we decided to attack the paint.”

Southern Utah: The Thunderbirds were not intimidated. They answered every early Kansas run and led in the final minute of the first half.

Kansas: The Jayhawks need another scorer besides Wilson and Dick. The duo scored 27 of the team’s 41 points in the first half and finished with 51 of the Jayhawks' 82.

Southern Utah: Heads to the Islands. The Thunderbirds will face Texas State next Friday in the opening round of the North Shore Classic in Laie, Hawaii.

Kansas: Plays North Carolina State Wednesday in the first round of the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas.

🏈 CFP-chasing TCU in B12 title game, K-State could join Frogs

HAYS - The Fort Hays State men's basketball team scored the first seven points and never trailed&nbsp; as they opened their 50th season at Gross Memorial Coliseum with a 90-59 win over Bethel College Thursday.

Jaheim Holden scored 15 of his career-high 21 points in the first half and was one of three Tigers to score double-figures. Holden went 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and hit all six of his free throw attempts. Elihah Nnanabu added a career-high 19 points and seven rebounds. Kaleb Hammeke chipped in with 13.

After struggling offensively in their opening two games last weekend in Oklahoma, the Tigers shot 52-percent against the Threshers and went 9-for-17 from beyond the arc. After building a 23 point lead at the half, the Tigers never let Bethel any closer than 19 in the second half.&nbsp; The Tigers' largest lead was 33 when&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/geoff-hamperian/6899">Geoff Hamperian</a>&nbsp;slammed home a fast break dunk on an assist from Lucas Hammeke&nbsp;with 1:16 to go.

 </figure>By GERARD WELLBROCK Hays PostHAYS - The Fort Hays State men's basketball team scored the first seven points and never trailed&nbsp; as they opened their 50th season at Gross Memorial Coliseum with a 90-59 win over Bethel College Thursday.Jaheim Holden scored 15 of his career-high 21 points in the first half and was one of three Tigers to score double-figures. Holden went 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and hit all six of his free throw attempts. Elihah Nnanabu added a career-high 19 points and seven rebounds. MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Keyontae Johnson scored 19 points, Cam Carter added 16 and Kansas State defeated Kansas City 69-53 on Thursday night.

Desi Sills scored 10 of his 11 points in the final 6 1/2 minutes to help the Wildcats (3-0) blunt a Roos rally.

Shemarri Allen scored 21 points, including 16 in the second half when the Roos cut a 20-point deficit to 10, the final time with four minutes to go. Anderson Kopp added 13 points.

A soaring dunk by Johnson put K-State up by 20 early in the second half. But a 3-of-17 shooting stretch by the Wildcats aided Kansas City's comeback. The Roos (1-4) were not able to get the margin to single digits with Sills putting in four layups.

After Kansas City got the game's first basket, Johnson scored the next eight points and the Wildcats led the rest of the way. Carter had five points and Nae'Qwan Tomlin four in a 9-0 run late in the half with K-State leading 41-25 at the break. Carter had 14 points on 4-of-7 3-point shooting with the Wildcats 7 of 16 from the arc in the half. They missed their four attempts from the arc in the second half.
