WACO, Texas – Fort Hays State Football received votes in the first regular season release of the AFCA Top 25 Poll on Tuesday. The Tigers are off to a 1-0 start to the season after shutting out Northeastern State 56-0 in the season opener this past week. The Tigers will test their mettle this week when they play No. 3 ranked Pittsburg State in the home opener Thursday night at 7 p.m.

Fort Hays State is one of five MIAA schools referenced in the first poll of the regular season. Three schools are in the Top 25, including No. 3 Pittsburg State, No. 5 Northwest Missouri State, and No. 18 Emporia State. The Tigers received more votes among the two from the MIAA in the receiving votes section. The Tigers received eight votes, compared to four for Central Oklahoma.

The Tigers are back in the receiving votes section of the poll for the first time since September 7, 2021. The Tigers faced three AFCA nationally ranked teams last season all on the road. As it stands right now, all of the current Top 25 ranked teams from the MIAA will be home opponents this season for the Tigers.

🏈 Tigers receive votes in first AFCA regular season top 25 poll

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Athletics announced there will be a few changes at home football games held at Lewis Field Stadium during the 2023 season. FHSU will now have beer sales at Lewis Field Stadium and there will be a no re-entry policy.

FHSU will facilitate&nbsp;beer sales&nbsp;at Lewis Field Stadium for the first time this fall. FHSU had a task force study this opportunity over the past couple of years and believes, if monitored appropriately, this serves as a revenue stream, enhances the game-day environment, and provides a safer and more responsible environment for alcohol consumption on game days.

Beer will be sold inside the northeast and southwest corners of Lewis Field Stadium. Individuals must be 21 years of age to purchase alcohol and fans are limited to two beers purchased per transaction.

With the approval of beer sales inside the stadium, FHSU will be implementing a&nbsp;no re-entry policy&nbsp;at Lewis Field Stadium. This means if a fan leaves the stadium, subject to limited exceptions, they will not be allowed back in.

FHSU will continue to allow the consumption of alcohol in the parking lot for four (4) hours prior to kickoff, per its Tailgating Guidelines. As in years past, this authorization for alcohol consumption in the parking lot ends at kickoff. While the authorized timeline for consumption of alcohol is not a change from the past, the&nbsp;no re-entry policy&nbsp;is expected to help address issues of compliance and enforcement. Plastic cups are no longer required for drinks, but glass containers and kegs are not allowed.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Cole Ragans continued his recent success with six scoreless innings as the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 12-1 in the first game of a three-game series Monday.

The American League Pitcher of the Month for August, Ragans (6-4) retired the first 13 batters he faced and finished with just one hit allowed. He struck out seven and didn't walk anyone. He now has a 21-inning scoreless streak.

Edward Olivares was 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs. Every Royals starter except for Salvador Perez had at least one hit, and Perez had an RBI.

Since coming to the Royals June 30 in a trade for Aroldis Chapman, Ragans is 4-1 with a 1.51 ERA (eight earned runs in 47 2/3 innings) and 63 strikeouts in eight starts.

The Royals had hits and runs in each of the first five innings. They got on the board in the first on a home run by Edward Olivares. A double by Michael Massey was followed by a single by Drew Waters in the second. In the third, Perez got a sacrifice fly to the second baseman.

Nelson Velazquez hit a two-run home run in the fourth to put the Royals up 5-0. Freddy Fermin led off with a single before Velazquez launched one 419 feet to left.

Ragans finally gave up his first baserunner when Yoán Moncada dropped a single into short center with one out in the fifth. Ragans then got Sosa to hit into a 5-4-3 double play.

The Royals erased any drama in the fifth. Massey drove in a run on a bases-loaded fielder's choice. Waters added an RBI single, Nick Loftin added a two-run double, Garcia drove home Loftin with a double before Olivares hit his second homer of the day.

The White Sox scored an unearned run in the eighth.

White Sox: Recalled RHP Declan Cronin from Class AAA Charlotte; placed RHP Jimmy Lambert on the 15-day injured list with right ankle inflammation; reinstated C Seby Zavala from the injured list and designated him for assignment.

Royals: Reinstated RHP Brady Singer from the Paternity List. In a corresponding move, IF/OF Samad Taylor was optioned to Triple-A Omaha (postgame Sunday).

White Sox: OF Luis Robert, who was a late scratch Saturday against Detroit, was still out of the lineup with cramping in his right quad. Manager Pedro Grifol said he likely wouldn't play Tuesday but Wednesday is still possible.

Royals: OF Kyle Isbel was held out of the lineup with discomfort in his right hamstring. He missed time earlier this season with an injury to his left hamstring.

The White Sox and Royals will play the second game of a three-game series Tuesday night. The White Sox will hand the ball to Dylan Cease (6-7, 4.91 ERA). The Royals will send RHP Brady Singer (8-10, 5.15 ERA) to the mound.

⚾ Ragans continues to dominate as Royals take opener over White Sox

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Masataka Yoshida hit a three-run homer and Adam Duvall had a solo shot to back Chris Sale as the Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 7-3 on Sunday.

Sale (6-3) didn’t allow a run over five innings, gave up two hits and struck out five while walking two. It was the first time he hasn’t allowed a run in a start since July 12 of last season.

“They are a good team and they are very patient and I felt like I was throwing a lot of pitches they were fouling off,” Sale said. “It's good to take this last one heading into Tampa.”

The Red Sox have won two straight after losing five in a row and six of seven. They are 5 1/2 games behind Texas for the final AL wild card.

Yoshida’s three-run homer went 415 feet to right field, scoring Justin Turner and Triston Casas in the fourth inning. It was his 14th homer on the year. Duvall added a home run in the sixth inning for his 19th of the season and gave Boston a 4-0 lead.

“He has been feeling better the last few days has been grinding through some things but his swing is getting back. He took some good cuts and he let it fly,” Boston manager Alex Cora said. “Those are good signs.”

Boston added two runs in the seventh including an RBI from Turner which came off of Austin Cox. Rafael Devers hit an RBI double in the ninth.

Salvador Perez hit an RBI single scoring Bobby Witt Jr. in the sixth and Dairon Blanco hit a two run single in the ninth off of Kenley Jansen.

“I thought we worked some good at-bats and deep counts but we just couldn’t break through,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “He (Sale) located when he had to…we just weren’t able to string a throng together against him.”

Taylor Clarke opened the game and pitched a scoreless inning before Zack Greinke (1-14) went 3 2/3 innings allowing three runs on five hits.

“He was a little under the weather today and didn’t have his full stamina, but he was still one pitch away from putting up another zero in the fourth,” Quatraro said.

It’s been over a month since the Royals have won a series and have lost eight of their last nine games.

Alex Verdugo left the game in the middle of the bottom of the sixth inning due to left hamstring tightness. ... The Red Sox reinstated LHP Brennan Bernardino from the COVID-19 Related Injured List. The club also placed RHP Garrett Whitlock on the Bereavement List.

Boston will travel to Tampa Bay with Brayan Bello (10-8, 3.57) taking the mound on Monday. Kansas City sends Cole Ragans (5-4, 3.27) to the hill on Monday as they host the White Sox.

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State Men's Soccer team ended their first week of the season with a 3-2 loss against the UC-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions. The Tigers fell down 2-0, battled back to equalize the match just a little after halftime, but saw the Mountain Lions notch the game winner with about 11 minutes to go in the match.

The Mountain Lions opened the scoring relatively quickly with an Alex Andersson solo goal at the 10 minute mark. Moments later, Andersson scored another, this time he was assisted by Marvin Putu. The Tigers found a scoring opportunity in the 36th minute when&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/inigo-jimenez/7313">Inigo Jimenez</a>&nbsp;crossed the ball to&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/jose-avendano/7301">Jose Avendano</a>, who tapped the ball to&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/collin-hershberger/7682">Collin Hershberger</a>&nbsp;for the finish. MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Will Howard threw for 297 yards and two scores, added touchdowns running and receiving to complete a rare trifecta, and led No. 16 Kansas State to a 45-0 rout of Southeast Missouri State on Saturday night in its season opener.

DJ Giddens ran for 128 yards and Treshaun Ward, a touted transfer from Florida State, had a TD run, helping the reigning Big 12 champion Wildcats cruise past one of the better teams in the Football Championship Subdivision.

Paxton DeLaurent had 213 yards passing for the Redhawks, who managed just 227 yards of total offense.

Howard took over as the Wildcats' starter midway through last season, leading them to upsets of two top-10 teams, including a victory over College Football Playoff participant TCU in the conference title game. And in Howard's first opener as the clear-cut No. 1, the senior QB picked up where he left off by leading Kansas State on five first-half touchdown drives.

He capped the first with a 33-yard pass to Jadon Jackson, the second with a keeper from a yard out and the third with a 37-yard strike to RJ Garcia. Ward pushed the lead to 28-0 before Howard finished an 89-yard march with the most improbable of scores: an 8-yard reception from Ward, who had taken the handoff before throwing it back to Howard.

Bo Nix accomplished the feat for Oregon last year — TDs throwing, receiving and running — in a win over Colorado. Desmond Ridder did it for Cincinnati during a blowout of Southern Methodist in 2021.

The only blip on Howard's otherwise exceptional performance came when he was hit while throwing. The pass sailed high across the middle and was picked off by the Redhawks' Antonio Taylor, though their ensuing drive went nowhere.

Chris Tennant tied a career-long with a 51-yard field goal to give the Wildcats a 38-0 lead at the break.

Southeast Missouri State, which qualified for the FCS playoffs a year ago, had some success through the air the few times DeLaurent was given a chance to look downfield. But the Redhawks accomplished nothing on the ground with Geno Hess, the school's career record-holder for yards rushing. He lost 4 yards on 10 carries.

Kansas State gave Howard the rest of the night off late in the third quarter, allowing highly-rated recruit Avery Johnson to make his debut. He capped a 79-yard drive by dashing through the Southeast Missouri State defense on a 7-yard scoring run.

SEMO: It was a rude homecoming for Redhawks coach Tom Matukewicz, who grew up about 35 miles from the Kansas State campus in Silver Lake, Kansas. The defending Ohio Valley champions gave up 588 yards of offense to the Wildcats.

Kansas State: It was an impressive all-around start to a non-conference schedule that slowly builds in quality of opposition. Troy is on deck next week before the Wildcats take a trip to former Big 12 rival Missouri the following week.

🏈 Howard has TDs passing, running and receiving as No. 16 K-State routs Southeast Missouri State

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Triston Casas hit a two-run homer and Alex Verdugo finished a homer short of hitting for the cycle as the Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 9-5 on Saturday night.

Six Boston batters drove in a run and all but one Red Sox starter had a hit. Boston snapped a five-game skid with the win after allowing four runs for the 12th time in 13 games.

Tanner Houck (4-8) worked five innings and allowed four runs and seven hits while walking one and striking out five.

Royals starter Alec March (0-8) was knocked out of the game early after allowing six runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out one in 2 ⅔ innings.

Kansas City has lost 11 of its last 13 games. The Royals haven't won a series since Aug. 3 and need a victory in the series finale on Sunday to end the skid.

The Red Sox capped a three-run first inning with Casas' two-run homer to right field. Boston had four extra-base hits in the inning. Cases went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

MJ Melendez homered for Kansas City and Maikel Garcia, MJ Melendez, and Nelson Velazquez drove in runs.

Prior to the game, former manager Ned Yost was inducted into the Royals Hall of Fame. He led Kansas City to a World Series championship in 2015 and has the highest postseason winning percentage in MLB history.

Chris Sale (5-3, 4.75 ERA) will start for the Red Sox in the series finale on Sunday. The Royals have not announced a starter.

GOLDEN, Colo. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team wrapped up the 2023 Oredigger Classic with a split on Saturday (Sept. 1), defeating Colorado Christian in three sets before dropping a hard-fought battle in five sets against San Francisco State.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/claire-olson/7499">Claire Olson</a>&nbsp;led the team with 20 kills on the day, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/emily-ellis/7495">Emily Ellis</a>&nbsp;picked up a team-high eight blocks across the two matches.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/caiya-stucky/7503">Caiya Stucky</a>&nbsp;distributed 72 assists with libero&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/brooke-hyland/7498">Brooke Hyland</a>&nbsp;totaling 31 digs in seven sets, averaging 4.4 per frame.

The Tigers will now return to Hays where they will make their home debut on Wednesday (Sept. 6) against Kansas Wesleyan beginning at 7 p.m. before hosting the 2023 Tiger Classic next Friday and Saturday (Sept. 8-9).

The Tigers scored the first four points in the second set before the Cougars bounced back to tie things up as late as 10-10. The Tigers and Gators went back and forth all evening, with FHSU dominating the first and fourth sets and SFSU taking care of business in the second and third frames. The final set was close until the final serve, with neither team leading by two points for the entirety of the set.

Fort Hays State used an efficient offensive attack to win the opening set, posting an attack percentage of .364 while recording only five errors. The Gators bounced back with 20 kills and just one error in the second set to tie things up at one.

The Tigers led 8-6 early in the third set before an 8-2 Gator run put San Francisco State on top by four, 14-10. The teams traded points the rest of the way, with the Gators finishing off a 25-19 win to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Fort Hays State fell behind early in the fourth set but quickly responded, turning a 5-2 deficit into a 13-8 lead thanks to an 11-3 run. The Tigers maintained control the rest of the way, leading by as many as nine en route to a 25-16 win. Ellis helped the Tigers stay alive, recording six kills on 10 swings in the fourth set. The Tigers as a whole recorded just two attack errors in the set.

Neither side was able to pull away in the final set. FHSU's best chance came midway through the frame when the Tigers scored four in a row to turn a two-point deficit into a two-point lead, but the Gators bounced right back to level the score at 7-7. FHSU led as late as 8-7 before San Francisco State scored four of the next five to take an 11-9 lead. A kill from Reeves and a solo block from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/gracie-rains/7500">Gracie Rains</a>&nbsp;helped the Tigers tie things up at 13, but two more Gator points put an end to the match.

The Tigers posted an attack percentage of .264 compared to a swing rate of .270 for the Gators. FHSU recorded two more blocks than its opponent, 7-5, while the Tigers also held a 7-6 edge in service aces.

Olson had 14 kills in the loss, with Rains chipping in 13 and Ellis contributing 12. Ellis had five blocks (one solo), while Stucky totaled 46 assists, three kills, two blocks and two service aces.

🏐 FHSU splits on final day of Oredigger Classic

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State's Hannah Mares tied a school record for goals scored in a match with three and the Tigers women's soccer team improved to 2-0-0 with a 4-0 win over Southwestern College Saturday afternoon at the FHSU Soccer Stadium.

The loss dropped the Moundbuilders to 0-3-1 on the season. 

Fort Hays State dominated the possession battle and was able to fire off 27 shots throughout the match, 13 on goal.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

It did not take the Tiger offense long at all to get going. Sullivan Kelly&nbsp;netted her first goal of the season on a corner kick just over a minute into the match, spinning the ball to perfection to find the bottom right corner of the net. 

17 minutes later, Mares&nbsp;cashed in on her first of three goals to stretch the advantage to 2-0. 

Fort Hays State had many more scoring opportunities in the first period, shooting 15 shots during the first period of play.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Three minutes into the second period Mares&nbsp;struck again on an assist from Kelly. The defense continued to stay solid after the halftime break, making it hard for the Moundbuilders to get quality possessions. 

In the 58th minute, Montserrat Diaz found Mares&nbsp;in the box to secure just the third hat track in program history and first since September 1st , 2018 by Chloe Montano. 

Keeper Isabel Robben&nbsp;recorded one save as the Tiger defense only allowed three shots in the match.&nbsp;

The Tigers will have a few days off before hosting two more home matches next weekend.&nbsp;Fort Hays State will first welcome Sioux Falls on Friday (Sep. 8) at 6 p.m. before facing off against Augustana on Sunday (Sep. 10) at 1 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

JUNCTION CITY - Hays won an overtime thriller in Junction City 20-14 to open the 2023 football season.

A stout defensive effort by Hays held Junction City to just 24 yards in the first half. Cooper Lindenmeyer picked off two passes followed by a third by Dalton Meyers.

The Indian offense threatened to score on several drives but converted just once on a 10 yard Malik Bah pass to Johnny Cano on fourth and goal. Harley Zimmerman kicked his first career PAT for a 7-0 lead.

The Indians would hang on to that same seven point advantage through the halftime.

Junction City opened the second half with six play 70 yard drive to tie the game at seven. The Indians marched the field on their next drive on a 13 play 80 yard drive to tie the game at 14 on a Bah eight yard run. Hays used 13 plays to cover the 80 yards.

The Blue Jays seemed to be going the wrong way on fourth quarter drive facing 2nd and over 20 yards. However, Brock Bazan found Michael Boganowski for an 86 yard score and a 14-14 tie.

Hays turned away Junction City late in the fourth quarter on a 4th and 2 at the 31 yard line. The Indians used the final minutes of regulation to drive into field goal range but a 32 yard field goal was blocked.

Hays went first in overtime and scored in three plays. Bah scored from six yards out on his 40th carry of the night for 218 yards. The extra point was wide right to leave the score at 20-14.

Junction City used four plays but was stood up short of the end zone by two yards.

Hays starts the year at 1-0. The Indians will have their first home game as they host Great Bend in one week. The Panthers opened the year with a 29-16 victory over McPherson.

🏈 Overtime: Hays knocks of Junction City

TMP-Marian’s Griffin Schumacher scored five total touchdowns
and the Monarch’s defense held Oakley to less the 100 total yards of offense on
their way to a 42-0 win Friday in their season opener at Lewis Field.

The Monarchs offense got out to a quick start, scoring two
touchdowns in the first four offensive plays for a 14-0 lead less than
five minutes into the game.

After TMP forced an Oakley three-and-out on their first offensive
possession the Monarchs took over at the Plainsmen 17-yard line following a short punt.


It took just one play for TMP to get on the board when Schumacher
ran in untouched, for his first touchdown of the game.

After another Oakley punt, it took the Monarchs just two
plays for Schumacher to break free for a 49 yard touchdown putting TMP up 14-0.

On the Monarchs third offensive possession, with the Monarchs
driving, quarterback Carson Liles suffered an ankle injury when he was taken
down awkwardly and left the game and did not return. Their offensive drive
stalled after that with a fumble inside the Oakley red zone.

After forcing another Oakley punt, Schumacher returned the
punt for 75 yards for a touchdown putting TMP up 22-0 after a two-point conversion.


Schumacher added a third rushing touchdown with just under
three minutes left in the first half, this time from 64 yards, for a 28-0 lead.

Similar to the first half Schumachers scored on the first
play of the second half, a 69 yard touchdown run, putting TMP up 34-0.

They added a Peyton Schwartz touchdown run in the fourth
quarter as the Monarchs pick up the 42-0 victory.

Schumacher lead the way for TMP racking up 271 yards on 13
carries and four touchdowns all career-highs.

As a team the Monarchs finished with 411 rushing yards and
433 total yards of offense.

The defense held Oakley to just 55 total yards with an interception
and two sacks.

The Monarchs will travel to Ellis next Friday to take on the
Railroaders.

plays for Schumacher to break free for a 49 yard touchdown putting TMP up 14-0.On the Monarchs third offensive possession, with the Monarchs
driving, quarterback Carson Liles suffered an ankle injury when he was taken
down awkwardly and left the game and did not return. Their offensive drive
stalled after that with a fumble inside the Oakley red zone.After forcing another Oakley punt, Schumacher returned the
punt for 75 yards for a touchdown putting TMP up 22-0 after a two-point conversion.
Schumacher added a third rushing touchdown with just under
three minutes left in the first half, this time from 64 yards, for a 28-0 lead.Similar to the first half Schumachers scored on the first
play of the second half, a 69 yard touchdown run, putting TMP up 34-0.They added a Peyton Schwartz touchdown run in the fourth

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The Fort Hays State men's and women's cross country teams swept the team titles at the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic on Friday (Sept. 1), with junior&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-cross-country/roster/regan-hodsden/7642">Regan Hodsden</a>&nbsp;also capturing the individual title on the women's side. The men were first out of 13 schools with just 26 points after placing eight runners inside the top 20, while the women won with 31 points, 23 points clear of second-place Tabor College.

The Tiger women took care of business to start the evening, with four of the first 10 runners to cross the finish line clad in black and gold. Hodsden, a returning All-American, picked up her first cross country victory in a Tiger uniform after crossing the line in 17:34.8.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-cross-country/roster/jaycee-vath/7646">Jaycee Vath</a>&nbsp;was second out of 91 runners, completing the three-mile race in 17:59.4.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-cross-country/roster/darian-hudgeons/7643">Darian Hudgeons</a>&nbsp;gave the Tigers a trio of athletes in the top five, traversing the course in 18:10.4.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-cross-country/roster/faith-little/7644">Faith Little</a>&nbsp;posted a time of 19:05.7 to finish 10th, while freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-cross-country/roster/abbye-hudson/7671">Abbye Hudson</a>&nbsp;rounded out the Tiger scoring five with a 13th place finish in her collegiate debut with a time of 19:16.3.

👟 Tigers sweep team titles in season opener

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Jason Bean threw for 276 yards and two touchdowns in place of injured star Jalon Daniels, helping Kansas overcame some early malaise and beat Missouri State 48-17 on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

Devin Neal had touchdowns on the ground and through the air, and Dylan McDuffie, Daniel Hishaw and Sevion Morrison hit the end zone, as the Jayhawks opened a season of high expectations against a team from the Football Championship Subdivision.

Daniels, the preseason Big 12 offensive player of the year, missed a portion of the Jayhawks’ fall camp with a back injury. He warmed up before the game but spent the entirety of it wearing a headset on the sideline, and it was unclear whether he will be available when Kansas faces a big step up against Illinois next week.

Missouri State, led by new coach Ryan Beard, took advantage of an early turnover and fourth-down stop to take a 10-7 lead in the second quarter. The Jayhawks proved to be too much, putting the game away in the fourth quarter.

The Bears' Jacob Clark threw for 143 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. But the first-time starter, who also ran for 36 yards, didn't get much help. Running back Jakardia Wright was held to 23 yards on 15 carries.

The Jayhawks looked more like their many downtrodden teams of yesteryear during the first half, rather than Lance Leipold's breakout bunch that started 5-0 last season and went to a bowl game for the first time in more than a decade.

They jumped to a 7-0 lead on Neal's 48-yard run, but then fumbled the ball away on their next possession and got stuffed on fourth down on the next. Missouri State turned the turnover into a short touchdown pass and the defensive stand into a field goal, taking a 10-7 lead before a suddenly quiet crowd inside Memorial Stadium.

Kansas needed three plays to go 75 yards for an answer, though, and a field goal made it 17-10 at the break.

The Jayhawks pushed the lead to 27-10 in the third quarter. And after Missouri State's Jmariyae Robinson added a TD run to his earlier scoring reception in the fourth quarter, the Jayhawks took advantage of two picks over the final 15 minutes to reach the end zone twice more and put the game away.

Missouri State: Nobody quite knew what to expect when Beard was promoted from defensive coordinator to replace Bobby Petrino, who left to become the offensive coordinator at Texas A&amp;M. But the Bears were fundamentally sound against a bigger, faster team from a Power Five conference, and that bodes well as they return to FCS play.

Kansas: There were too many miscues for the Jayhawks to feel comfortable until the fourth quarter. Bean was 22 of 28 through the air but rarely had a clean pocket. Hishaw's fumble was costly, as were some penalties at inopportune times.

Missouri State heads to Tennessee-Martin on Sept. 9.

Kansas plays the Fighting Illini next Friday night.

Lyles (4-15), who leads the major leagues in losses, had one of his best outings of the season for the Royals. He allowed two runs on four hits, struck out seven and did not give up a walk. The Royals gave him a big lead early, and he cruised. He didn't allow a run until Alex Verdugo's two-out home run in the eighth.

Salvador Perez hit two home runs for his second multi-homer game of the season, the first since May 2 against Baltimore. Nick Loftin, who was making his major league debut, was 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and a run.

James Paxton (7-5) allowed six runs on five hits in 1 1/3 innings.

Bobby Witt Jr. put the Royals on the board in the first inning with his 28th home run of the season. He's two home runs away from becoming the first Royal ever with 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases in a season. He already has 38 stolen bases.

Perez followed with his 20th, his seventh season with at least 20 home runs. He trails only George Brett, who had eight 20 home run seasons, in that category in franchise history.

Kyle Isbel, Maikel Garcia, Witt and Perez drove in runs in the Royals scored four-runs second inning.

Loftin had a double in the third for his first hit and RBI. He led off the sixth with a single and scored his first run on Isbel's double. Perez and Nelson Velazquez each hit two-run homers in the Royals' six-run sixth.

Royals: OF Edward Olivares was recalled from Triple-A Omaha; RHP James McArthur was recalled from Triple-A Omaha; IF Nick Loftin was selected from Triple-A Omaha; RHP Brady Singer was placed on the Paternity List and RHP Joe Barlow was designated for assignment.

The Red Sox will send RHP Tanner Houck (3-8, 4.93 ERA) to the mound on Saturday night. The Royals have not yet announced a starter.
