MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Being a backup quarterback can be a lonely job, except&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-kansas-texas-christian-horned-frogs-state-wildcats-093523262e7d125058187be25bed3fcf">for this season</a>&nbsp;in the Big 12. The QB turnstiles have been active, and Kansas State’s Will Howard and West Virginia’s Garrett Greene are among those who have thrived.

It’s only going to get busier for Howard, who will start in place of the injured Adrian Martinez when Kansas State plays at West Virginia on Saturday as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll">the 19th-ranked Wildcats</a>&nbsp;try to close in on a possible berth in the Big 12 championship game.

“Will's going to be the guy. It's his football team,” Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said.

Howard, a junior, will make his 12th career start and second of the season. Knowing early in the week that he would get the first-team reps in practice has been “a little more calming in a way," Howard said.

This is the closest that he will play to his hometown of Downingtown, about 280 miles (451 kilometers) from Morgantown in eastern Pennsylvia.

“I’ll have a lot of people there,” Howard said. “As far as the Big 12 goes, there’s not a lot of games we get to play out east. So I’m excited for it and definitely have been thinking about this one.”

Howard has thrown nine touchdown passes with one interception in three games. On Saturday, he threw for 196 yards and three scores&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-kansas-waco-baylor-bears-884e22568c946fa1ccf70d8eee6267dd?utm_source=apnews&amp;utm_medium=pollpage">in a surprisingly easy</a>&nbsp;31-3 win at Baylor.

“He looks to be one of the more improved players this year in our league. He’s extremely efficient,” West Virginia coach Neal Brown said.

Greene got his most extensive work of the season after replacing starter JT Daniels for the second half of West Virginia’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-west-virginia-oklahoma-sooners-morgantown-8eb2ff9d7ff5cc67f9db6ba1e6b213e1">23-20 win over Oklahoma</a>&nbsp;last week. The sophomore ran for two scores and threw for a third.

“I thought he energized the stadium. I thought he energized our sideline,“ Brown said.

Brown said he won’t announce his starter this week, but “Garrett earned the opportunity to play more."

The Wildcats (7-3, 5-2 Big 12, No. 15 CFP) can clinch a berth in the Big 12 title game Saturday with a win and a Texas loss at Kansas. Or the Wildcats can get it done themselves with two wins to end the regular season.

Kansas State's Deuce Vaughn has 1,081 rushing yards and will go up against a defense that allowed 211 to Oklahoma’s Eric Gray last week. Vaughn has five rushing TDs and is tied for the team high in receptions with 38.

Kansas State has allowed 19 touchdowns all season. Only six Bowl Subdivision teams have allowed fewer. The Wildcats have 13 interceptions, compared to three for the Mountaineers.

Brown said the Kansas State defense goes through defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah, who has two forced fumbles and a league-best 7.5 sacks.

“Number 91, he’s a man,” Brown said. “He’s an issue. We’re going to have to account for him. He’s elite.”

West Virginia (4-6, 2-5) needs to win both of its remaining games to become bowl eligible. There’s also the job security of Brown, who is 21-24 in his fourth year. Fans have been howling all season for changes. One of them happened Monday when West Virginia announced that athletic director Shane Lyons&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-alabama-crimson-tide-gordon-gee-neal-brown-1d83bbde3062b9bb70c168cf9d21988c">was let go</a>.

West Virginia kicker Casey Legg is 13 of 13 on field-goal attempts this season, including two to win games. He made a 25-yarder as time ran out last week.

“I hit it, and then blacked out for a second or two and then a bunch of teammates were surrounding me,” said Legg, a junior who played soccer at a high school that didn’t offer football. “So that was the cool part. I think the part that’s different about hitting a walk-off is as soon as you hit it, you’re getting swamped by people. So that was really fun.”

With two weeks left in the regular season, six teams remain alive for the second spot in the Big 12 championship game and others are still trying to become bowl-eligible.

Based on how the season has played out so far, it’s likely many of these final games will be close.

The average winning margin in Big 12 games is 13.5 points, lowest among the Power Five conferences.

In 27 of the 35 conference games, the margin at some point in the fourth quarter was one score (8 points or less), according to Sportradar. Fifteen of those 27 games ended up decided by one score.

TCU coach Sonny Dykes points to high-level coaching and recruiting across the board as reasons for the competitiveness.

“There's just no layups," Dykes said. “Some people have the good fortune of being in leagues where the season starts and they go, ‘Well, we’re going to (win) these six games, then these three games are going to be tough.’ Well, that doesn’t happen in the Big 12.”

Dykes also said teams near or at the bottom of the standings have continued to play hard. Among them is&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-alabama-crimson-tide-gordon-gee-neal-brown-1d83bbde3062b9bb70c168cf9d21988c">West Virginia, which forced out athletic director Shane Lyons this week</a>&nbsp;largely because of its struggles in a season that began with a one-score nonconference loss to Pittsburgh and has seen an overtime loss to Kansas before last week's win over Oklahoma on a game-ending field goal.

"We’re going to continue to fight and get better and win as many games as possible, and do it the right way, like he would want,” coach Neal Brown said.

Oklahoma, tied with the Mountaineers for eighth place, has lost its last two games by a total of four points, which brought home the nature of the season to coach Brent Venables.

“It will punish you for mistakes, a lack of technique, bad timing, a lack of precision,” he said, “but it will reward you when you do things the right way.”

No. 4 TCU (10-0, 7-0 Big 12) has done plenty right.

Entering this weekend,&nbsp;<a href="https://big12sports.com/standings.aspx?standings=183&amp;path=football">Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Texas, Texas Tech and Kansas are mathematically alive</a>&nbsp;for the second spot in the championship game.

No. 19 Kansas State (7-3, 5-2) has the inside track and would clinch on Saturday if it wins at West Virginia and Texas loses at Kansas. If that scenario does not unfold, the race would be decided the following weekend.

K-State is 3-2 in Big 12 games that had one-score margins in the fourth quarter. Texas is 2-3 in such games.

The Big 12 already has six teams that have reached the minimum of six overall wins to be qualified to play in a bowl. Texas Tech and Oklahoma each need one more win to become eligible, and West Virginia and Iowa State would need to win out.

Iowa State (4-6, 1-6) has been the team with the hardest luck in close games. The Cyclones opened conference play with four losses by a total of 14 points. All seven of their Big 12 games have had one-score margins in the fourth quarter, and they've lost six.

Coach Matt Campbell saluted his players' perseverance through so many tough losses.

“Ninety percent of the teams I’ve been around fold their tent,” Campbell said. “The next thing you know, you get blown out here, you get blown out there, but this team never has and it hasn’t because our seniors have held the standard."

Texas Tech visits Iowa State on Saturday for a cold-weather meeting of teams trying to get to bowls.

The Red Raiders wouldn't have gotten to the Liberty Bowl last season if it hadn't been for Jonathan Garibay's 62-yard field goal as time expired beat the Cyclones, 41-38.

Iowa State, attempting to extend its school-record bowl streak to six in a row, is the perfect illustration of there being no gimmes in the Big 12.

The Cyclones are in last place despite leading the conference in all four major defensive categories.

“This,” first-year Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire said, “is going to be a tight game.”

🏈 Big 12 teams enter final stretch knowing there are no gimmes

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was missing his top three wide receivers in practice Wednesday because of injuries and illness, and the situation might not be a whole lot better when Kansas City visits the Chargers this weekend.

JuJu Smith-Schuster remained in the concussion protocol after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit from Jacksonville safety Andre Cisco in last Sunday's win over the Jaguars.

Smith-Schuster remained on the turf for several minutes before he was helped to his feet and off the field with help from teammates, and it's unlikely he will be cleared to play any time soon.

The Chiefs were also missing Mecole Hardman, who missed the 27-17 win over the Jaguars with an abdominal injury, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who was dealing with an illness that popped up over the past couple of days.

That left Mahomes with backup Justin Watson, rookie Skyy Moore, newcomer Kadarius Toney and special teams standout Marcus Kemp to catch passes as the Chiefs prepared for their visit to Los Angeles on Sunday night.

“We just put guys in position to succeed. For me, it's about executing the offense, finding the open guy, getting the ball out of my hands and letting them make plays,” Mahomes said. “We've seen these guys in big moments. Hopefully we get guys back later in the week, but if not, we'll be ready to roll out there.”

Yet the trio of missing wide receivers were each in the midst of their best stretches this season.

Smith-Schuster had five catches for 113 yards and a touchdown against the Bills, seven for 124 and a score against the 49ers and 10 for 88 yards against the Titans.

And he had a couple of catches early on against Jacksonville before the pass over the middle set him up for Cisco, whose shoulder and helmet hit Smith-Schuster in the head.

“We'll just take him day by day. We'll be cautious with him,” said Chiefs coach Andy Reid, adding that he had not heard from the NFL about the hit. “We're not going to do anything that you shouldn't do according to what the data shows.”

Hardman, in the midst of a contract year, had scored in three straight games with five touchdowns total over that span before missing last week's game against Jacksonville. He was targeted a season-high nine times against Tennessee.

Valdes-Scantling had three catches for 60 yards and his first TD with the Chiefs last Sunday.

Meanwhile, Moore has just seven catches for 106 yards. Watson has seven for 113 yards and two scores. And Toney has played 37 snaps total during his Kansas City career, though his performance against the Jaguars was encouraging.

Toney had four catches for 57 yards and his first NFL touchdown while adding 33 yards on the ground.

“I wasn't surprised by him making the plays,” Mahomes said, “but us being able to move him around as much as we have. It's a testament to him. He's gotten in here, he's learned multiple positions, we've moved him around — he's not in one spot.

"We're going to keep giving him more and more, and get him more and more involved in this offense, because it will make us better as the season goes on.”

Especially if the Chiefs are missing two or three of their other wide receivers.

The 2021 first-round pick flamed out in New York, unable to stay healthy or make an impact when he was on the field, but was getting a fresh chance in Kansas City.

In just his second game Sunday, he ran for 33 yards, caught four passes for 57 yards and scored his first NFL touchdown.

“Brett texted me whenever he knew it was kind of done,” Mahomes said of the trade. “He's always looking to add great players. We had competition in the room, and we have a lot of great receivers in that room, and we have a lot of great ones on this team. But whenever you have more competition, it brings out the best in everybody.”

The Chiefs fully expect Hardman and Smith-Schuster to return at some point; the former could be back Sunday night, when they visit the Los Angeles Chargers. But in the meantime, Toney is ready to step into their void with his new team.

“Yeah,” he said Sunday night, “I feel like I'm right where I need to be.”

The Chiefs had 31 sacks last season, the fourth-worst total in the NFL. They already have 27 this season, just five off the league lead. That includes five of Jacksonville's Trevor Lawrence on Sunday.

The shine is starting to rub off special teams coordinator Dave Toub, who not long ago was interviewing for head coaching jobs. The Chiefs allowed the Jaguars to recover an onside kick to begin the game, Jody Forston fumbled a kickoff return near the end of the first half and struggling kicker Harrison Butker missed another extra point.

Carlos Dunlap shared a sack with Chris Jones on Sunday, making him the 41st player to reach 100 for his career since sacks became an official stat in 1982. He's had two sacks in his past two games and four on the season.

“Being able to get that accomplished is a huge milestone and accomplishment,” Dunlap said. "That was a goal, playing 10-plus years, getting 100-plus sacks to be in that elite category of the guys who have ever done it. So to get that done today and to share it with a guy who has potential to be up there as well (in Jones) was a very special moment.”

Clyde Edwards-Helaire, a first-round pick in 2020, did not have a carry Sunday as the Chiefs turn toward rookie Isiah Pacheco as their feature running back. Edwards-Helaire has just 28 carries for 85 yards over the past four games.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Jalen Wilson and Dajuan Harris Jr. provided a calm, steadying influence for No. 6 Kansas on Tuesday night. Jayhawks freshman Gradey Dick provided the late splash.

Together they extended the nation's longest active winning streak.

Wilson scored a career-high 25 points, Harris dished out a career-best 10 assists and&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/i/status/1592749620320690177">Dick made three crucial baskets</a>&nbsp;in the final 2 1/2 minutes to help the defending national champs rally past No. 7 Duke 69-64.

“We didn't know where he was at times; we sent out a missing person's report in the second half," interim coach Norm Roberts joked, referring to Dick. “But this is his first real big-boy game he's played in and I thought he really responded.”

Kansas is 3-0 with Roberts filling in for suspended coach Bill Self, who will sit out the first four games because of a 2017 infractions scandal. But the results remain unchanged as the Jayhawks ran their winning streak to 14.

Wilson also grabbed 11 rebounds on a night when shooting was at a premium.

Duke (2-1) was led by&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/i/status/1592742075338215424">Kyle Filipowski, who scored a season-high 17 points</a>&nbsp;and had 14 rebounds to become the first player in school history to register double-doubles in each of his first three games. Marvin Bagley III was the only other player to do it in his first two games.

Jeremy Roach had 16 points as new coach Jon Scheyer lost for the first time.

The young Blue Devils pushed Kansas to the brink in a game that went back and forth most of the second half. Duke just couldn't finish it off.

“Before the game, we said that whoever handles the adversity better wins and I thought they did that late,” Scheyer said.

Still, the Blue Devils were in prime position when Filipowski's putback with 4:39 left gave Duke a 59-54 lead.

But Kansas scored seven straight points to take a 61-59 lead on Dick's 3-pointer with 2:21 to go. Roach answered with a 3 for Duke and then Dick scored on alley-oop play with 1:40 left to give Kansas a 63-62 edge.

The Jayhawks never trailed again, ending the game on a 15-5 run.

“&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/i/status/1592751387812978688">Those two guys, they never gave in</a>,” Roberts said. “There was never any panic and that's all led by Jalen and Dajuan.”

Duke: These Blue Devils don't appear to be content taking a backseat to anybody. Despite a slow start and a poor finish, they traded jabs all night with a more experienced team. At times, they even looked more physical than Kansas — all promising signs for improvement.

Kansas: They've survived without Self — this time just barely. But the gritty Jayhawks played hard and fast and never got rattled, even when the execution wasn't great or the shots didn't fall. Even Roberts acknowledged sometimes winning ugly is what it takes.

Duke: The Blue Devils may slide a bit, but not much. Certainly not after this sort of performance just three games into a season with a first-year coach and three freshman starters.

Kansas: With No. 4 Kentucky losing earlier Tuesday and the Wildcats visiting No. 2 Gonzaga this weekend, the Jayhawks could move up a spot or two — depending on the results.

In a game of firsts, Scheyer thought his team played relatively well. It marked the first time Scheyer coached or Duke's talented freshmen class played outside Cameron Indoor Stadium. It also was their first experience against a ranked team and their first close contest. And the double-overtime game between Michigan State and Kentucky in the opener Tuesday didn't help much.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have selected several potential sites to build a replacement for aging Kauffman Stadium, owner John Sherman said Tuesday.

In a letter to fans posted on social media, Sherman said the sites are in or near downtown Kansas City, but he did not elaborate. Kauffman Stadium and Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the Kansas City Chiefs, are located far from the city's downtown.

“In the spirit of (Royals founder) Ewing Kauffman, our current mission is to look ahead to ensure that Major League Baseball and the Kansas City Royals will thrive in this region for decades to come,” Sherman said.

Sherman, who bought the team in 2019, estimated the new stadium district could cost up to $2 billion, which he said would make it the most expensive project in Kansas City history.

Sherman&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-mlb-nfl-kansas-city-kansas-city-royals-3b4729a71e843bf8eddee42dc6ced7e1">announced last year</a>&nbsp;that the Royals were discussing whether to build a new stadium or renovate Kauffman, which will be 60 years old when the team's lease expires in 2031.

In his letter, Sherman said renovating the current stadium up to standards needed to compete with other organizations would cost as much as or more than the new stadium.

“A new home would be a far better investment, both for local taxpayer dollars already supporting our facility, and for the Kansas City community,” Sherman said.

He said supporters envision a ballpark district around the new venue, with restaurants, shops, offices, hotels and affordable housing.

After a push in the early 2000s to build a stadium downtown fizzled, Jackson County voters in April 2006 approved a sales tax increase to fund $250 million in renovations to Kauffman and Arrowhead.

The new proposal will rely on continuing the team's current public-private partnership and investment with several local jurisdictions and the state of Missouri, said Sherman, who pledged that Jackson County residents would not be asked to contribute more tax dollars to the stadium than they currently do.

The next steps will include team officials holding a listening tour throughout the area to discuss the plan and beginning discussions with local, state and federal officials about possible additional funding sources.

⚾ Royals considering several sites for new stadium, owner says

The TMP-Marian Monarchs had five players named to the All-Mid-Continent
League football team released this week.

TMP senior Kade Harris was an all-league selection at running
back, linebacker and returner. Senior Michael Hale and junior Kendall Walker earned
first-team honors on the offensive line and sophomore kicker Henry Speno was
named to the first team. 

Walker was also named to the second team defensive line and
Hale was an honorable mention pick on the defensive line. Junior defensive back
Peyton Schwartz was also named honorable mention.

Harris, who rushed for 864 yards and nine touchdowns as a
senior was a unanimous first team selection at running back. He finished his
career as the career rushing leader at TMP with 3,314 yards and 39 touchdowns.

After earning first-team selection at quarterback as a junior
he is a three-time all-league selection on offense.

With his first-team selection on defense, Harris earned
all-league honors all four years. Harris led the Monarchs with 85 tackles as a
senior. He was a first-team selection at defensive back as a junior and a sophomore
after earning a second-team selection as a freshman.

Harris was selected as the first-team returner each of the
last two seasons and was all-MCL all four years. He finished his career with
three career return touchdowns.

Both Hale and Walker were honorable mention selections on
the offensive line last season. Hale was also an honorable mention pick at center
his sophomore season.

Walker was a first team pick on defense and Hale was named
to the honorable mention team last season.

Walker finished with 38 tackles, 5.5 for loss, one sack, an
interception and forced fumble.

Hale ranked third on the team in tackles with 59 total
tackles, 15 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.

It was the first all-league selections for both Speno and
Schwartz. 

Speno made 22-of-25 PAT attemps and Schwartz finished with
19 tackles, 2 for loss and one interception.

League football team released this week.TMP senior Kade Harris was an all-league selection at running
back, linebacker and returner. Senior Michael Hale and junior Kendall Walker earned
first-team honors on the offensive line and sophomore kicker Henry Speno was
named to the first team. Walker was also named to the second team defensive line and
Hale was an honorable mention pick on the defensive line. Junior defensive back
Peyton Schwartz was also named honorable mention.You can find a complete list of all-MCL selections below.Harris, who rushed for 864 yards and nine touchdowns as a
senior was a unanimous first team selection at running back. He finished his
career as the career rushing leader at TMP with 3,314 yards and 39 touchdowns.After earning first-team selection at quarterback as a junior
he is a three-time all-league selection on offense.With his first-team selection on defense, Harris earned
all-league honors all four years. Harris led the Monarchs with 85 tackles as a
senior. He was a first-team selection at defensive back as a junior and a sophomore
after earning a second-team selection as a freshman.Harris was selected as the first-team returner each of the
last two seasons and was all-MCL all four years. He finished his career with
three career return touchdowns.Both Hale and Walker were honorable mention selections on
the offensive line last season. Hale was also an honorable mention pick at center
his sophomore season.Walker was a first team pick on defense and Hale was named
to the honorable mention team last season.Walker finished with 38 tackles, 5.5 for loss, one sack, an
interception and forced fumble.Hale ranked third on the team in tackles with 59 total
tackles, 15 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.It was the first all-league selections for both Speno and

🏐 Several area players named to KVA All-State teams

GREAT BEND — The soccer-based sport Teqball was created in Hungary in 2012 and now is
heading to Great Bend. 
The Great Bend Recreation Commission received a grant from Teqball to grow the
sport in the United States. 
Teqball combines soccer and table tennis and is played on a curved table.
Fine-tuning their soccer technical skills, players have three touches to get
the ball over the "net" without touching the ground. 
Great Bend Rec Executive Director Chris Umphres said thanks to the grant, the
Rec Center only had to pay the shipping fee for a permanent and portable
Teqball table. "I talked to the high school soccer coach and asked if people are skilled enough to be able to play in town," said Umphres. "He said people would have fun playing this game. We only had to pay $150 for shipping to get the two tables here."

The Rec Commission plans to install the permanent table, made for outdoors, at Heizer Park. The portable table will be used at the city auditorium. Umphres said the permanent table usually costs roughly $3,500 and the portable table is $1,800. GBRC plans to install the Teqball table at Heizer Park within the next month.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

The El Paso, Texas native earned the honor after picking up four bonus-point wins and a second-place finish at the Dakota Wesleyan Open over the weekend (Nov. 12). Three of Henry's four wins came against DII opponents on the top two-ranked teams in the country. The 11th-ranked wrestler in Division II at 197 pounds, Henry opened the day with a first-round pin before a dominant 16-1 technical fall against Jaydon Walls of No. 1 St. Cloud State. He followed that up with a 12-2 major decision over No. 2 Nebraska-Kearney's Jackson Kinsella in the quarterfinals before reaching the finals with another major decision (15-7) against Dominic Murphy of St. Cloud State. His day wrapped up with a narrow 3-2 defeat in the championship bout. This is Henry's first MIAA Wrestler of the Week award and the first for the Tigers since last December when Marty Verhaeghe and A.J. Cooper combined to earn three-consecutive weekly honors. Henry and the rest of his Tiger teammates will head out for one of their shortest road trips of the season this weekend when they compete at the Younes Hospitality Open on Saturday (Nov. 19) in Kearney, Neb.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State had five players named to the 2022 All-MIAA Football Team, released by the conference office on Tuesday. The Tigers had one first-team, once second-team, and three third-team selections. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/football/roster/manny-ramsey/6753">Manny Ramsey</a>&nbsp;received first-team honors at wide receiver. Ramsey is now a three-time All-MIAA selection after garnering third-team honors in 2021 and an honorable mention pick in 2019. Ramsey finished the 2022 regular season ranked second in the MIAA in receiving yards per game (66.5) and total receiving yards (732). For his career at FHSU, Ramsey ranked second in receptions (176), second in 100-yard receiving games (9), third in receiving yards (2,606), and third in receiving touchdowns (22). <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/football/roster/pat-kelly/6736">Pat Kelly</a>&nbsp;received a second-team selection on the offensive line. Kelly, like Ramsey, is now a three-time All-MIAA selection after earning an honorable mention selection last year and a third-team selection in 2017. Kelly played in 46 games throughout his seven-year career at Fort Hays State, making 45 starts on the offensive line as a tackle. He battled through injuries all throughout his career, granted two medical hardships from the NCAA, and kept a year of eligibility when the COVID pandemic took the 2020 season away. He started all 10 games he played in this season. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/football/roster/myles-menges/6746">Myles Menges</a>&nbsp;is now a two-time All-MIAA selection. He received third-team honors this year as a defensive lineman after getting an honorable mention nod last year at linebacker. He recorded 36 tackles, which was most among Tiger defensive linemen, along with seven tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. He also recorded four pass breakups for the season. Menges was the team leader in tackles in 2021 as a linebacker, when he had 75, and now has a total of 111 tackles through two seasons on the field for FHSU. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/football/roster/makel-williams/6792">Makel Williams</a>&nbsp;received an All-MIAA Third Team selection at linebacker. The Blinn College transfer led the Tigers in tackles this season with 86, including a team-best 50 solo stops. He also notched a forced fumble and interception for the season. Williams reached double figures in tackles in two games, including a season-high 12 in the season finale at Pittsburg State, and had at least six tackles in 10 of 11 games. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/football/roster/mason-perez/6752">Mason Perez</a>&nbsp;received an All-MIAA Third Team selection at defensive back. In his second year on the field for the Tigers, Perez recorded 56 tackles, one interception, one fumble recovery, and one blocked kick. He ranked second on the team in tackles and started all nine contests he played in. He missed two contests due to injury. The Tigers had one first-team, once second-team, and three third-team selections. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/football/roster/manny-ramsey/6753">Manny Ramsey</a>&nbsp;received first-team honors at wide receiver. Ramsey is now a three-time All-MIAA selection after garnering third-team honors in 2021 and an honorable mention pick in 2019. Ramsey finished the 2022 regular season ranked second in the MIAA in receiving yards per game (66.5) and total receiving yards (732). For his career at FHSU, Ramsey ranked second in receptions (176), second in 100-yard receiving games (9), third in receiving yards (2,606), and third in receiving touchdowns (22). <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/football/roster/pat-kelly/6736">Pat Kelly</a>&nbsp;received a second-team selection on the offensive line. Kelly, like Ramsey, is now a three-time All-MIAA selection after earning an honorable mention selection last year and a third-team selection in 2017. Kelly played in 46 games throughout his seven-year career at Fort Hays State, making 45 starts on the offensive line as a tackle. He battled through injuries all throughout his career, granted two medical hardships from the NCAA, and kept a year of eligibility when the COVID pandemic took the 2020 season away. He started all 10 games he played in this season. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/football/roster/myles-menges/6746">Myles Menges</a>&nbsp;is now a two-time All-MIAA selection. He received third-team honors this year as a defensive lineman after getting an honorable mention nod last year at linebacker. He recorded 36 tackles, which was most among Tiger defensive linemen, along with seven tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. He also recorded four pass breakups for the season. Menges was the team leader in tackles in 2021 as a linebacker, when he had 75, and now has a total of 111 tackles through two seasons on the field for FHSU. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/football/roster/makel-williams/6792">Makel Williams</a>&nbsp;received an All-MIAA Third Team selection at linebacker. The Blinn College transfer led the Tigers in tackles this season with 86, including a team-best 50 solo stops. He also notched a forced fumble and interception for the season. Williams reached double figures in tackles in two games, including a season-high 12 in the season finale at Pittsburg State, and had at least six tackles in 10 of 11 games. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/football/roster/mason-perez/6752">Mason Perez</a>&nbsp;received an All-MIAA Third Team selection at defensive back. In his second year on the field for the Tigers, Perez recorded 56 tackles, one interception, one fumble recovery, and one blocked kick. He ranked second on the team in tackles and started all nine contests he played in. He missed two contests due to injury. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals and first baseman Ryan O'Hearn agreed to a $1.4 million contract to avoid salary arbitration Tuesday as part of a flurry of moves that set the club's 40-man roster ahead of the deadline to protect players from the Rule 5 draft.

O'Hearn, who made $1.3 million last season, can earn up to $250,000 in bonuses. He hit just .239 with one homer and 16 RBIs while in 67 games while ceding playing time last season to Nick Pratto and Vinnie Pasquantino.

The Royals selected the contracts of right-hander Alec Marsh, catcher Freddy Fermin and outfielder Diego Hernandez to protect them from the draft. Marsh was just 2-16 with a 6.88 ERA at Double-A and Triple-A last season, while Fermin hit .270 in 87 games at Triple-A and Hernandez batted .287 at Class-A and Double-A.

The Royals designated left-hander Jake Brentz, right-hander Nate Webb and outfielder Brent Rooker for assignment.

Earning first-team honors were&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/blake-arndt/6640">Blake Arndt</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/ethan-doud/6648">Ethan Doud</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/haruya-iwasaki/6651">Haruya Iwasaki</a>, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/callum-frogson/6932">Callum Frogson</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/jackson-elgas/7066">Jackson Elgas</a>&nbsp;earned second-team honors. Doud produced four points for the 2022 season with one goal and two assists and played 1,621, playing all 90 minutes in 12 contests. Iwasaki is now a two-time all-region selection from the D2CCA, receiving first-team honors this year after a second-team pick last year. He had two goals in 2022 to go with a team-high 1,646 minutes played. He played in all 90 minutes of 17 contests and has helped the team to a 1.00 goals against average for the season. Frogson is a second-team selection as a midfielder in his first year with the Tigers. He ranked second on the team in points (13) and goals scored (5) and provided three assists in 2022. He had a strong .455 shot percentage overall (5 goals, 11 shots), scoring on all five of his shots on goal for the season.
