COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Kevin McCullar Jr. heard the boos and catcalls from the Missouri student section hours before tipoff, when Kansas first emerged from the tunnel for pregame warmups. The noise rose to an ear-splitting roar as the bitter rivals began their first showdown in Columbia in more than a decade.

All that McCullar heard by the end was the haunting refrain of “Rock Chalk Jayhawk.”

McCullar finished with 21 points, Jalen Wilson had 24 points and 10 rebounds, and the sixth-ranked Jayhawks pounded their old Big 12 foe 95-67 on Saturday night in just their second meeting since the Tigers bolted for the SEC.

“The atmosphere was electric tonight,” McCullar said. “We just tried to embrace the environment.”

KJ Adams Jr. also had a career-high 19 points and Gradey Dick scored 16 for the Jayhawks (9-1), who romped past the Tigers last year in Lawrence but were making their first visit to Columbia since Feb. 4, 2012, the year Missouri switched conferences.

The fevered pitch for the latest showdown of century-old rivals evaporated in the opening minutes, though, when Kansas raced to a 30-16 lead. It swelled to 26 points early in the second half before the Jayhawks cruised to the finish.

“In all honesty, you want to be in environments where people care,” Kansas coach Bill Self said, “and it was obviously a caring environment today. The crowd was great. And I thought our guys really did a good job of not letting them go on runs that could have really gotten the crowd more into the game.”

D'Moi Hodge and Nick Honor scored 15 apiece to lead the Tigers (9-1), who had been one of 10 remaining unbeatens in Division I men's basketball at the start of the day. Noah Carter finished with 12 points and DeAndre Gholston had 11.

“There’s a reason why Kansas is top 10 in the country. There’s a reason why Bill Self is a Hall of Fame coach,” Tigers counterpart Dennis Gates said. “I thought we showed and displayed different things throughout the game where we almost had runs going, but something — a missed free throw or a missed 3 — kind of took the wind out of our sails.”

There are rivalries in college basketball and then there is Kansas-Missouri, marked by a pervasive hatred predating James Naismith and his peach baskets to actual guerrilla warfare along their border in the years leading up to the Civil War.

One fan walking through the concourse of Mizzou Arena on Saturday even wore a hat that read “Remember Quantrill” — as in the Confederate sympathizer William Quantrill, who led a massacre in Lawrence, Kansas, in 1863.

So it wasn't surprising that the smoke billowing out of the tunnel leading to the Tigers' locker room seemed a little thicker Saturday night. The student section and their notorious bunch known as “the Antlers” a little more vulgar. And the roars of their first sellout crowd this season just a little bit louder.

It didn't take long for the Jayhawks to silence all of them.

After missing their first two shots, they proceeded to hit 11 straight, including five by Dick. Two of his were effortless 3-pointers, the second giving Kansas a 28-14 lead and prompting Gates to finally call a timeout.

“I think that gets us jacked up to play,” Adams said of the atmosphere. “It really set a tone for us.”

Not even the return of Hall of Fame basketball coach Norm Stewart nor football coach Gary Pinkel could shake Missouri from its malaise. The Tigers missed 16 of their first 22 shots, allowing Kansas to establish a 36-17 lead — to the chagrin of three-time Cy Young Award winner and former Tigers pitcher Max Scherzer, who also was in the crowd.

“We just didn't execute how we planned,” Honor said.

Dick and Adams had 15 points apiece by halftime as Kansas took a 50-33 lead to the locker room.

Nothing changed there: Missouri turned the ball over on four of its first six second-half possessions, and the Jayhawks turned the miscues into nine straight points. And despite a second-half slump that allowed Missouri to put together an 11-2 run, the Jayhawks were never seriously threatened down the stretch.

“Every segment of the game is a learning experience to get better. You have to learn to win on the road,” Self said, “and I thought we did a pretty good job with that tonight."

Kansas got sloppy midway through the second half but otherwise was dominant on both ends of the floor. The Jayhawks were 10 of 22 from the 3-point arc, caused 21 turnovers and had 24 assists to just eight for the Tigers.

Missouri has played at a breakneck pace this season, scoring a nation-leading 23.9% of its points on fast breaks. But the more athletic Jayhawks outran the Tigers on Saturday night, outscoring them 22-10 in transition.

The Jayhawks begin a three-game homestand against No. 14 Indiana next Saturday.

The Tigers play Central Florida in the Orange Bowl Classic next Saturday in Sunrise, Florida.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team came out on top in a back-and-forth affair against Missouri Western Saturday afternoon, winning 64-58 at the MWSU Fieldhouse. The lead changed hands 13 times on the day, but a strong fourth quarter helped the Tigers (7-3, 3-0 MIAA) pull away to secure their third-straight road win over the Griffons (7-4, 2-2 MIAA).

The Griffons scored the first four points, but a pair of Earney triples late in the first quarter put the Tigers up 16-12 after 10 minutes of play. Missouri Western then opened the second quarter on an 11-2 run to go up by five, 23-18. Hollenbeck added 13 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Earney matched her career high with 12 for the second game in a row. Golladay totaled nine points and a season-high seven rebounds. Dilsaver tallied game highs in assists with five and steals with three. Fort Hays State grabbed 13 offensive rebounds, turning those boards into 12 second-chance points. The Tiger defense created 14 Griffon turnovers with 11 steals while totaling 19 points off turnovers on the other end. The Tigers won the rebound battle by four, 41-37. The Griffons outshot the Tigers from the floor, 38.5 percent to 31.7 percent. LUSAIL, Qatar (AP) — Grant Wahl, one of the most well-known soccer writers in the United States, died early Saturday while covering the World Cup match between Argentina and the Netherlands. He was 48.

U.S. media seated near him said Wahl fell back in his seat in a section of Lusail Stadium reserved for journalists during extra time of the game, and reporters adjacent to him called for assistance.

Emergency services workers responded very quickly, treated him for 20 or 30 minutes on the spot and then took him out on a stretcher, said Keir Radnedge, a veteran British sports journalist who was working nearby at the time.

The World Cup organizing committee said he was taken to Doha's Hamad General Hospital, but it did not state a cause of death. “We are in touch with the US Embassy and relevant local authorities to ensure the process of repatriating the body is in accordance with the family’s wishes,” it said in a statement.

Wahl, who wrote for Sports Illustrated for a decade then started his own website, was a major voice in introducing professional soccer to an American public more used to seeing the sport as a school-level game. He also brought a critical eye to the organizational bodies of the international sport.

He “really helped put soccer on the mainstream sports map in the States,” Radnedge said.

“Grant had a strong moral compass, on where sports should be and how sport ... should help set standards for people,” he said. “There was never any doubt that Grant was on the side of the good guys in wanting soccer to make the best of itself.”

Wahl was covering his eighth World Cup. He wrote Monday on his website that he had&nbsp;<a href="https://grantwahl.substack.com/p/world-cup-daily-day-22">visited a medical clinic</a>&nbsp;while in Qatar.

“My body finally broke down on me. Three weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work can do that to you,” Wahl wrote. “What had been a cold over the last 10 days turned into something more severe on the night of the USA-Netherlands game, and I could feel my upper chest take on a new level of pressure and discomfort.”

Wahl wrote that he tested negative for COVID-19 and sought treatment for his symptoms.

“I went into the medical clinic at the main media center today, and they said I probably have bronchitis. They gave me a course of antibiotics and some heavy-duty cough syrup, and I’m already feeling a bit better just a few hours later. But still: No bueno,” he wrote.

Wahl tweeted on Wednesday that he had celebrated his birthday that day.

“We could always count on Grant to deliver insightful and entertaining stories about our game, and its major protagonists,” the U.S. Soccer Federation said in a statement. “Grant’s belief in the power of the game to advance human rights was, and will remain, an inspiration to all. Grant made soccer his life’s work, and we are devastated that he and his brilliant writing will no longer be with us.”

Wahl's wife, Dr. Celine Gounder, tweeted that she was thankful for the support of her husband’s “soccer family” and friends who had reached out.

U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price said&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/StateDeptSpox/status/1601419687619067904">in a tweet</a>&nbsp;that American officials were in touch with Qatari authorities “to see to it that his family’s wishes are fulfilled as expeditiously as possible."

Wahl wrote he was detained for 25 minutes at Ahmed Bin Ali stadium in Al Rayyan, then was let go by a security commander. Wahl said FIFA apologized to him.

Among Wahl’s work before he began covering soccer exclusively was&nbsp;<a href="https://vault.si.com/vault/2002/02/18/ahead-of-his-class-ohio-high-school-junior-lebron-james-is-so-good-that-hes-already-being-mentioned-as-the-heir-to-air-jordan">a Sports Illustrated cover story</a>&nbsp;about LeBron James in 2002, when James was a junior at St. Vincent-St. Mary High in Akron, Ohio.

“He was always pretty cool to be around. He spent a lot of time in my hometown of Akron,” James said in Philadelphia after the Los Angeles Lakers lost in overtime to the 76ers. “Any time his name would come up, I’ll always think back to me as a teenager having Grant in our building down at St. V’s. It’s a tragic loss. It’s unfortunate to lose someone as great as he was. I wish his family the best. May he rest in paradise.”

A voter at times in FIFA’s annual awards, Wahl was among 82 journalists honored last week by FIFA and the international sports press association AIPS for attending eight or more World Cups.

“His love for football was immense and his reporting will be missed by all who follow the global game,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino said.

Wahl graduated from Princeton in 1996 and worked for Sports Illustrated from 1996 to 2021, known primarily for his coverage of soccer and college basketball. He then launched his own website.

Wahl also worked for Fox Sports from 2012-19.

His death at the World Cup left fellow journalists covering the games stunned.

“You come to a World Cup as a journalist to work, to share the stresses, the pressures but also the enjoyments and the fascination of it — and to share that with your readers, your listeners, your viewers. That’s what Grant was doing, that’s what he enjoyed doing. Everybody recognized that enthusiasm in him,” Radnedge said.

“So for him to not be with us anymore at such a young age, that’s an immense shock.”

Hays High hosted Junction City Friday night to wrap up the home portion of the 2022 season.&nbsp;

Girls #9 Hays 51 - Junction City 25

Hays turned a cold shooting first quarter into a 26 point win 51-25 over the Junction City Blue Jays. The Indians made just two of eleven first quarter shots and were tied at nine points after the first quarter. Hays slowly started to pull away in the second quarter with a 15-7 advantage during the eight minutes for a 24-16 halftime lead.

Hays never trailed and was never threatened in the second half. Junction City failed to score in the third quarter and Hays put 16 more points on the board for a 40-16 lead. The Indians pushed the lead to near thirty before settling for a 51-26 victory.

The Indians were led by Molly Martin with 16 points which included four more three pointers after making six on Tuesday. Katie Linenberger scored a career high 14 points.

Hays improves to 4-1 and will play Wichita South at Wichita Southeast on Saturday, December 17th. Junction City drops to 0-3.

Boys Hays 45 - Junction City 47

Hays High was outrebounded for the first time on the season and committed 19 turnovers in a two point loss to Junction City 47-45.

The Blue Jays led 9-4 leading into a timeout by Hays. The Indians responded with a 15-2 run that lasted midway through the second quarter. Hays had their biggest lead of the night at that point 19-11.&nbsp;

Junction City went on an 8-0 run to get within one before Hays pushed their advantage back to six at halftime 26-20.

Hays kept their lead at six through the first two minutes of the third quarter before Junction City started chipping away and taking the lead at 32-30 with three minutes left. Hays took their last lead of the game moments later on a three pointer at 34-32.

Junction City took a two point lead into the fourth quarter and pushed their advantage to five points on two occasions. The last of which was at 45-40 with 1:17 remaining. Hays scored the game's next five points to tie the game at 45, but the Blue Jays scored quickly on their next possession.

Hays had a pair of free throws with five seconds remaining. They missed the first and after intentionally missing the second got the offensive rebound but was called a travel. The Indians stole the inbound pass but could not get a clean look at a game winner, falling 47-45.

Six players scored five or more points for the Indians, led by the nine of Edwin Muller.

Hays falls to 2-3 and will be in Wichita to face South High School next Saturday at 2:00. The contest will be held at Southeast High School.

AUSTIN, Texas – College Sports Communicators named <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/isabel-robben/6693">Isabel Robben</a>
 of Fort Hays State to its Women's Soccer Academic All-America Team on 
Tuesday. She earned first-team honors at goalkeeper. Robben is 
one of only three goalkeepers nationally in NCAA Division II to receive 
Academic All-America honors for 2022 and was the top vote receiver among
 goalkeepers as a first-team selection. Sports Information and Athletic 
Communication professionals nationwide vote on the Academic All-America 
Team, which reflects both academic and athletic accomplishments of the 
individuals selected. 
Robben owns a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average as an 
Accounting and Finance double major at FHSU. She earned both the MIAA 
Academic Excellence Award (cumulative 4.0 GPA) and MIAA Scholar-Athlete 
Award (All-MIAA honors with at least a 3.5 GPA) this season. She is a 
three-time recipient of the MIAA Academic Excellence Award. 
On the field, Robben was among the nation's top goalkeepers this season.
 She was an All-MIAA Second Team selection. She ranked fifth in NCAA 
Division II for individual shutouts with 11 and had a combined shutout 
as well to have a hand in all 12 of Fort Hays State's shutouts. The 12 
shutouts tied the school record, set by the 2016 team. Robben played the
 12th most minutes of any goalkeeper in NCAA Division II with
 1,879 and she owned an 0.71 goals against average and .805 save 
percentage for the season. She allowed one or less goals in 18 of 21 
contests for FHSU in 2022. 
Robben is the second individual in FHSU Women's Soccer history to

Action is slated to begin at 9 a.m. with approximately 250 wrestlers from 19&nbsp;schools&nbsp;competing on six mats. Fort Hays State is projected to suit up 23 wrestlers for&nbsp;the event.

HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State head golf coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-golf/roster/coaches/jerol-deboer/1148">Jerol DeBoer</a>&nbsp;announced the signing of two student-athletes that will join the Tiger squad in the 2023-24 season. Corbyn Marquess from Plainville, Kan. and Hayden York from Tonganoxie, Kan. have both signed letters of intent to attend FHSU in the fall. Corbyn Marquess earned a trio of first team All-State honors her freshman, sophomore and junior seasons at Plainville High School before playing on the Fall Oklahoma Junior Golf Tour during her senior season in 2022. She placed in the top five at the KSHSAA Class 3-2-1A State Tournament all three years, finishing second in 2020, fourth in 2021 and fifth in 2019. She recorded 15 tournament victories in her high-school career. Marquess finished in the top 20 in the points standings on the Oklahoma Junior Golf Tour this fall, earning a chance to compete in the Red River Challenge. She is also heavily involved in other activities, competing in both softball and track and field at Plainville while also participating in National Honor Society, band and STUCO while serving as class president. Hayden York won the 2021 KSHSAA Class 4A State Championship, one of two All-State honors for the Tonganoxie native. She wrapped up her high-school career with a third-place finish at state this fall. York finished runner-up at the regional meet in 2021 and 2022. She captured 10 tournament victories during her time as a Chieftain, including six-straight wins in 2021. York placed in the top 10 at every meet during her senior season. She set the school scoring record with an average of 79 as a junior and recorded a low round of 75 in high school.

for induction into the Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of
Fame Class of 2023. Awards will be presented during 2023 in conjunction with a
KSHSAA-sponsored state function/ championship, or locally at the inductee's

The Class of 2023 Hall of Fame inductees include:

Kenneth Brown, Independence – Faculty 
The Independence High School tennis coach for 23 years, Kenneth Brown may be
dubbed “Mr. Tennis of Independence.” In his time, he led Independence to five
team state championships (2006, 2007, 2008, and 2014). Along the way he also
guided five individuals to state championships. In 1992, Brown began coaching
the boy’s squad and then picked up coaching the girl’s team in 2008. He would
go on to coach both teams until 2014. Before his time at the high school, Brown
was the head coach of the Independence Community College tennis team from
1968-1991. Brown was named the boys coach of the year by the Kansas Coaches
Association in 1999 and 2006 and was named the 5A boys coach of the year in
1998, 4A in 2001, 2004, 2008 and 2010. On the girl’s side, Brown was named
coach of the year in 2013 and the 4A coach of the year in 2009, 2012, and 2014.

David Cherry, Buhler – Administrator 
During his 22-year career with the KSHSAA, Cherry filled his summers with
Student Council Leadership Workshops for which he administered hundreds of
students each year. In addition, he was responsible each August for organizing
the KSHSAA Coaching School, a coaching clinic held annually for 85 years.&nbsp;
While administering swimming and diving Cherry watched the state championship
grow from one class to two classes for both boys and girls. In soccer the boys
program grew from two classes to three and the girls from one to three classes
competing for a state championship. Cherry served on the NFHS Coaches Education
Committee, NFHS Coaches Association Advisory Committee, and the NFHS Records
Committee. A native of Wichita, Cherry began his career as a health and
physical education teacher and coach at Emporia-Lowther Middle School and
Emporia High School.&nbsp; He later had stops in Whitewater-Remington HS and
Ellis High School where he was also the athletic director prior to joining the
Association staff.

Patricia Grzenda, Lawrence – Faculty 
The swimming and diving coach from Lawrence High School and Lawrence-Free State
High School, Patricia Grzenda defined the sport in Lawrence for 23 years. In
1978, Grzenda began coaching the Chesty Lions and eventually took on the
Firebirds until her retirement in 2001. It is understood during her coaching
career her teams accomplished a .850 winning percentage, 10 league
championships, eight State Championships (seven girls, one boys). From 1989 to
1994, no other school hoisted the girl’s state championship trophy. During her
stretch as the girls coach at Lawrence she guided her athletes to 27 gold
medals. In 1995, she was awarded the National Federation of Interscholastic
Coaches Association National Boys Swimming Coach of the Year. Grzenda was also
named the Kansas Coaches Association Boys Swimming Coach of the Year in 1997 and
2001. In 2004, she was given the Kansas Master Teacher Award for her dedication
and innovation in adaptive physical education.&nbsp;

Bo Maynes, Norman, OK – Student Bo Maynes accomplished perfection in the sport of wrestling
during his time at Salina South High School. During his four-year career he
tallied 130 wins and zero losses. His freshman year began with 30 wins,
followed by 32, 38 and 30 to round out the unblemished career. The undefeated
career is only the third all-time in the state of Kansas. According to his high
school coach Bob Warkentine, the four-time state champion was never taken down.
Maynes was a state champion at 100, 112, 119 and 125 pounds. All championships
came at the class 5A level. Nationally, Bo was a five-time high school All-American
in freestyle and won a Junior National title in 1996 and was a runner-up in
1998. Maynes was also an 11-time Kansas Kids Federation Champion. After high
school, Maynes went to Oklahoma University where he became a Big 12 Champion in
2003 and four-year letter winner. Maynes continued his wrestling influence
coaching at Norman High School in Oklahoma.

Douglas Vander Linden, Burlington (Posthumously) –
Faculty 
A passion that grew and grew, the former wrestling coach at Burlington High
School, Douglas Vander Linden made a lasting impact on the sport throughout the
state. For 32 years Vander Linden lead the high school wrestling program for
the Wildcats where he tallied a 473-181 dual record. Eighty-six athletes
qualified for state under his leadership resulting in 38 state placers and
three state champions. In 2005 he was named the Kansas Wrestling Coaches
Association Coach of the Year and the NFHS State Coach of the Year. Vander
Linden was very involved in the leadership of the KWCA, serving as president
for two years, vice president for two years and treasurer for 18 years. His
leadership in KWCA was key towards the sanctioning of girls wrestling. In
addition to high school wrestling, Vander Linden also coached the middle school
team, a program which he started. In August of 2022, Douglas Vander Linden
finished his fight with stage four cancer and other illnesses, remembered as a
champion for kids.

The Hall of Fame is housed in the Kansas State High School
Activities Association offices, 601 SW Commerce Place in Topeka and is open
Monday–Friday during business hours (directions at <a href="http://www.kshsaa.org">www.kshsaa.org</a>).&nbsp; The Hall of Fame is

Former Ellis AD among KSHSAA Hall of Fame inductees

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs could have two important parts of their offense back with guard Joe Thuney and wide receiver Kadarius Toney returning to practice Wednesday ahead of their trip to Denver.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said that everyone would practice in their first workout since blowing a late lead in Sunday's loss in Cincinnati. That includes Thuney, who did not play because of an ankle injury, and Toney, who was coming off his most productive game with Kansas City when a hamstring injury sidelined him most of the past three games.

“I'm going to let him get out there and work a little bit. We'll just see how he does,” Reid said of Toney, who arrived in a trade from the New York Giants, where similar injuries were a frequent issue for the 2021 first-round pick.

“We're not going to bring him back and have him hurt it again,” Reid said. “We'll see what we can do.”

As for Thuney, who is about as durable as they come, Reid said the big offensive lineman probably could have returned last week in Cincinnati, but chose to give him another week off in the hopes of avoiding any lingering issues.

“His thing was getting that final push,” Reid said. “He feels better this week than he did last week. He's made as much progress as he's had, I said, ‘Let’s give him a little more time.' That's where I was at the end of last week.”

Reid also said that wide receiver Mecole Hardman, who is eligible to come off injured reserve next week, is recovering nicely from his abdominal injury. Hardman has been running outside and put on some of the weight he lost while dealing with the problem, and there's a chance he could help Kansas City for the stretch run.

The Chiefs are tied with the Bills at 9-3 for the best record in the AFC, though Buffalo holds the head-to-head tiebreaker.

“The guys know where they're at. Nobody knows better than they do what's out front,” said Reid, whose team can clinch the AFC West with a win Sunday in Denver coupled with a loss by the Los Angeles Chargers.

“You don't have to stand up there and preach to them about that,” Reid continued. “They want to win games. That's the mentality of this team. They battled their hearts out Sunday and it didn't work out. We're back to it.”

In fact, Reid was peppered with questions Wednesday about bouncing back from the loss in Cincinnati — the third straight game this calendar year that the Bengals have beaten the Chiefs, including last season's AFC title game. And after the third or fourth question, Reid made it clear that his focus was off the Bengals and onto the Broncos.

The same goes for Patrick Mahomes, who will no doubt welcome Thuney and Toney back to the huddle.

“In this league,” he said, “you have to move on or you'll make one loss turn into two. You watch the tape on Monday and you get a sense of what you can do better, when you can take away that was positive, and you move onto next week.”

Mahomes has never lost to the Broncos in nine tries.

“We just really emphasize playing our division opponents,” he said, by way of an explanation. “That's what we work on all offseason. For us, the coaches do a great job of giving us great game plans and I just try to go out and execute them.”

NOTES: Mahomes was chosen as the Chiefs' nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award this week. “Just a tremendous honor,” he said. “To have my opportunity this year is something I'll cherish for the rest of my life.” ... Reid said there's a chance that two-time Pro Bowl RB Melvin Gordon, who was signed to the Kansas City practice squad late last month, could face his former team on Sunday. But carries would be scarce behind Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon. “We're fairly healthy there," Reid said, ”but I'm glad we have him. He's done a nice job for us."

Girls #9 Hays 56 - Manhattan 47 Hays entered the game ranked for the first time on the season entering the 5A polls at #9, after a runner-up finish at the Hays City Shootout.

Hays used a 12-0 first quarter run and 14-5 run in the second on their way to a 56-47 win.

The game was tied at three before the Indians hit four first quarter three pointers that stretched the lead out to 15-3. Manhattan scored right before the end of the first quarter start an 8-0 run that lasted into the second quarter.

Hays went scoreless for the first four and a half minutes to start the second quarter. Katie Linenberger ignited a 14-5 run with a three point play. Hays led 29-16 at halftime.

Manhattan scored 21 points in the third quarter but thanks to four Carly Lang points in the final seven seconds of the quarter, Hays countered with 18. Hays pushed their advantage in the fourth quarter to 15 points before holding on for a 56-47 victory.

Hays made 9 of 18 three point attempts in the contest.

Molly Martin scored a career high 22 which included six three pointers and four of four free throw shooting. Carly Lang added a season high 16 and Jillyan Sheldon scored 10 for a second straight game. Manhattan was led by Destiny Yates' 16 points and Avery Larson with 15.

Hays improves to 3-1. Manhattan falls to 1-3.

Manhattan used an 18-4 run in the first half to seize control of the game against Hays and stayed ahead by double figures rest of the night on their way to a 60-44 victory.

Hays had leads of 11-10 and 14-13 in the first quarter but would not take back the lead rest of the night. The Hays Indians were held to eight points in the final 9:15 of the first half.

Manhattan led by as many as 21 points in the third quarter. Hays trimmed the advantage down to 12 in the fourth quarter with less than three minutes to go before the final of 60-44.

Chason VanDerWege scored a career high 12 to lead the Indians. Manhattan was led by Jack Wilson who scored 20, 18 in the first half.

Hays falls to 2-2. Manhattan is 3-1. Hays will host Junction City on Friday.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — David N’Guessan scored 23 points to lead Kansas State to an 81-64 victory over Abilene Christian on Tuesday night.

N’Guessan made all nine of his field goals but was 4 of 11 from the line. Markquis Nowell added 15 points and matched a season high with 12 assists for Kansas State (8-1), which shot 31 of 53 (58.5%) from the field but was just 3 of 12 from distance and 16 of 29 (55%) from the line. Keyontae Johnson and Nae’Qwan Tomlin added 12 points apiece.

Kansas State concludes a three-game homestand on Sunday against Incarnate Word before a matchup with Nebraska on Dec. 17 at the Wildcat Classic in Kansas City, Mo.

🏀 N’Guessan's 23 points help K-State beat Abilene Christian

After a runner-up finish at the Hays City Shootout last week to open the season the Hays High girls enter the 5A girls KBCA rankings at No. 9 this week.

The Indians defeated Newton and Washburn Rural, the preseason No. 1 team in 6A, before losing to Fort Smith Northside in the championship game.

Phillipsburg, (3A #3), Smith Center (2A #2), Hoxie (2A #9), Osborne (1A-D1 #2), Hodgeman Co. (#5 1A-D1) and Wheatland-Grinnell (1A-D2 #10) girls all ranked this week.

The TMP boys finished 5th at the Hays City Shootout, with both losses coming against state ranked teams and dropped one spot to No. 3 in the 2A rankings.

The Dighton boys also ranked this week (1A-D2 #4).
