HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team found a way to grind out a 57-48 victory over a pesky Central Oklahoma team Friday evening inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. Despite the Bronchos (4-5, 1-4 MIAA) entering the weekend averaging 76.4 points per game, the Tigers (9-3, 5-0 MIAA) managed to hold UCO to a point total that was 13 points lower than their previous season low.

Neither side could get much to go in the first quarter, combining for nine turnovers and just six field goals. Both teams surpassed that total in the second frame, with each side knocking down seven shots from the floor. Central Oklahoma led by as many as five midway through the second before a pair of&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/olivia-hollenbeck/6845">Olivia Hollenbeck</a>&nbsp;stick-back layups helped the Tigers go back in front by one before halftime. Hollenbeck went back to work out of the locker room, outscoring the Bronchos herself in the third quarter, 10-8. The sophomore forward hit all five of her shots from the floor while grabbing five rebounds, including two more layups following offensive rebounds.

MANHATTAN –&nbsp;After leading Kansas State to its third Big 12 title with a 31-28 overtime victory over No. 3 TCU in the 2022 Big 12 Championship, fourth-year head coach&nbsp;Chris Klieman&nbsp;has been named one of five finalists for the Bobby Dodd Trophy as the nation’s top head coach, officials from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Peach Bowl announced Friday.

Klieman is joined on the list by fellow conference champion head coaches Willie Fritz (Tulane), Jim Harbaugh (Michigan), Kirby Smart (Georgia) and Kyle Whittingham (Utah). Klieman is K-State’s first finalist for the award since Bill Snyder won it in 2012.

“These five coaches have found a way to set themselves apart by guiding their programs to historic seasons during another exhilarating year of college football,” said Jim Terry, chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. “Each of these men have left a significant mark on their respective universities, football programs and players, both on and off the gridiron, and truly embody all that this award stands for.”

Klieman, who holds a 30-19 record in four years in Manhattan, led the Wildcats to their first Big 12 title since 2012 and the 11th&nbsp;double-digit win campaign in school history. K-State will be in search of a school-record tying 11th&nbsp;win in the Sugar Bowl, a feat that been accomplished on seven occasions, most recently in 2012.

In addition to the 30 overall wins, Klieman has led the Wildcats to three victories over Oklahoma – ranked No. 6 in 2022, No. 5 in 2019 and No. 3 in 2020 – kept the Governor’s Cup trophy in Manhattan with four wins over in-state rival KU and has collected 20 Big 12 Conference wins.

Thanks to his 30 wins in Manhattan, Klieman holds a career head coaching record of 102-32 as his 76.2% winning percentage ranks fourth among current FBS coaches that have led programs for at least nine seasons, trailing only Clemson’s Dabo Swinney, Alabama’s Nick Saban and James Madison’s Curt Cignetti.

The 2022 season was one of the ages as the Cats opened the year 2-1 in non-conference play, defeating regional rival Missouri while dropping a close 17-10 contest to Tulane, who went on to finish the season ranked 16th&nbsp;nationally and earned a berth in the AT&amp;T Cotton Bowl. Road wins at No. 6 Oklahoma and Iowa State jump-started Big 12 play, and following losses to ranked foes TCU and Texas, the Wildcats closed out the conference season with three-straight wins (and four of the last five) to earn a berth in the league title game and rematch with the No. 3 Horned Frogs. The overtime win against TCU propelled the Wildcats to the Allstate Sugar Bowl, their first New Year’s Six bowl since playing in the 2013 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

Klieman has coached running back&nbsp;Deuce Vaughn&nbsp;to consecutive Consensus All-America campaigns, as Vaughn is just the second player in school history to earn the distinction twice (Chris Canty – 1995 and 1996). Klieman also saw defensive end&nbsp;Felix Anudike-Uzomah&nbsp;be named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year in 2022, one of four All-Big 12 First Team selections.

A native of Waterloo, Iowa, Klieman came to K-State after capping his five-year stint as head coach at North Dakota State by winning his fourth national championship in 2018. He tied Jim Tressel (Youngstown State) for the most FCS National Championships as a head coach, while he was a part of seven national championships at NDSU, which was the most in FCS history at the time of his departure.

Klieman guided the 2018 Bison to a perfect 15-0 record, just the fifth team in FCS history to go undefeated and untied on the way to a national championship. North Dakota State also claimed that feat in 2013 when Klieman as the defensive coordinator.

Kansas State, which finished ninth in the final College Football Playoff Top 25, will take on fifth-ranked Alabama in the 89th&nbsp;annual Allstate Sugar Bowl inside Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. The game will take place at 11 a.m. Dec. 31&nbsp; and be shown on ESPN.

The Tigers are coming off their first conference loss of the season, falling 64-49 at No. 1/1 ranked Northwest Missouri State this past Sunday. The Tigers held a one-point lead four times in the second half before seeing the top-ranked Bearcats pull away late on their home floor. It snapped a seven-game win streak for the Tigers. Central Oklahoma reached No. 6 in the NABC and No. 8 in the D2SIDA national polls on December 6 before taking its first loss of the season to Missouri Southern on December 9. The Bronchos slipped to No. 11 in both polls this week, released on December 13. UCO tied Northwest Missouri State for the MIAA regular season title last year (18-4), both finishing just one game better than Fort Hays State (17-5) in the standings. The Bronchos won both meetings with the Tigers last year, 77-60 in Hays and 75-68 in Edmond. Central Oklahoma and Northwest Missouri accounted for five of Fort Hays State's six losses last year. Fort Hays State looks to continue defending its home floor, 6-0 so far this season at Gross Memorial Coliseum. FHSU opened MIAA play on December 1 with an overtime win over Northeastern State and then two days later defeated Rogers State which ran its home win streak to 12-straight games going back to last season. The last home loss for the Tigers was on January 12, 2022 to a No. 2 ranked Northwest Missouri State team. NWMSU and Central Oklahoma (unranked at the time) were the only two teams to defeat FHSU in Hays last year. Last year's win by UCO was its first inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. FHSU had won 11-straight meetings with at GMC going back to 1974-75 until last year's setback. FHSU is 14-2 against UCO all-time at home, which includes a 3-1 mark at Sheridan Coliseum before moving to Gross Memorial Coliseum in 1973-74. The only UCO win at Sheridan was a slim 57-56 decision on December 8, 1956. Fort Hays State will be looking to snap a 12-game skid to NABC ranked teams. The last time the Tigers defeated an NABC Top 25 team was on February 28 of the 2018-19 season, knocking off a No. 25 ranked Missouri Southern squad 89-84 inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. Seven of the 12 losses in that string have been to Northwest Missouri State, which held a top-three ranking in the country in five of the seven meetings during the stretch. The Tigers will be looking to snap a 10-game skid to D2SIDA Top 25 ranked opponents, which also goes back to that win over Missouri Southern. The Lions were No. 23 in the D2SIDA Poll at that time. The only teams FHSU met in that stretch that had NABC Top 25 rankings, but were not in the D2SIDA rankings, included Rogers State in 2019-20 and Missouri Western in 2020-21. This game pits two of the top defensive teams in the nation against each other. FHSU and UCO are the top two teams in the MIAA in both scoring defense and field goal percentage defense. FHSU holds the edge in scoring defense allowing 56.8 points per game compared to 57.4 by UCO. The Tigers rank second nationally in scoring defense, while the Bronchos are fifth. UCO holds the advantage in field goal percentage defense at 35.5 percent, compared to 37.2 by FHSU. The Bronchos rank second nationally in that category with the Tigers right behind in third. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/kaleb-hammeke/6897">Kaleb Hammeke</a>&nbsp;continues to lead the Tigers in scoring at 18.9 points per game, and ranks second in the MIAA. He has reached double figures in scoring in all nine games so far this season. 🏀🎙️ LISTEN - Tiger women host Bronchos Friday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Andy Reid knew the tall, gangly tight end with the soft hands, deceptive speed and unique ability to get wide open could become a star the moment he first laid eyes on him during a college football game about a decade ago.

Travis Kelce was playing for Cincinnati at the time, and Reid showed up at one of his games to watch his own son, Spencer, who was then a tailback for Temple. Reid already knew a bit about the Kelce family having just drafted Travis's big brother, Jason, to play center for his Philadelphia Eagles, but what he saw on the field that day was something else.

The Bearcats only completed 13 passes in the 34-10 whipping, but Kelce hauled in four of them with such incredible ease.

“I thought watching him,” Reid recalled this week, “this kid has a chance to be really something special.”

Not even Reid, though, could have known just how good Kelce would become.

Already with three All-Pro nods and seven trips to the Pro Bowl on his resume, the 33-year-old Kelce moved into the most rarified of places in the pantheon of NFL tight ends last week. With four catches for 71 yards&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/mahomes-chiefs-outlast-broncos-34-28-wilson-concussed">on Sunday in Denver</a>, Kelce not only surpassed the 1,000-yard receiving mark for a franchise-record seventh consecutive season but eclipsed 10,000 yards for his career, becoming only the fifth player at his position to do it.

Tony Gonzalez, whose club records Kelce keeps breaking, and Shannon Sharpe already are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, while Jason Witten and Antonio Gates are poised to join them in the coming years.

The numbers are&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/chiefs-kelce-continues-star-amid-rash-injuries">even more impressive</a>&nbsp;given that Kelce came into the league with off-the-field red flags that landed him a season-long suspension at Cincinnati, and ultimately saw his draft stock plummet into the third round. And that nearly his entire rookie season was missed because of microfracture surgery on his knee.

“Obviously all those guys are unbelievable company,” Kelce said after the Broncos game Sunday, “and I'm very fortunate that I've had the coaches and players around me to be able to have this much success in the NFL as I have.”

Such a self-forgetful statement speaks to the growth that Kelce has experienced during his time in Kansas City.

He admittedly came into the league with a chip on his shoulder — pieces of it are still there. He had an ego that almost matched his outsized personality. And he had a penchant for ripping officials, once saying that one wasn't fit to work in Foot Locker and another time throwing his towel at a referee who did not throw his own flag.

Kelce can still be a hothead. But he's mostly learned to rein it in, particularly when doing otherwise would hurt his team.

“Just watching his growth process, and just thinking about all the years that he's been here and how he's just evolved, not only as a player but more as a young man — and how he's developed as a captain and a leader — those are the things that I enjoy watching,” Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy said. “I love the energy that he brings and I love the positive impact that he has with our team on the sidelines. It's been fun to watch.”

Not so fun for opposing defenses, who have tried everything within the rules — and a few things outside of them — in their failed efforts to slow Kelce down. Man coverage? He has the athleticism to beat you. Zone coverage? An intuitive ability to get open. Want to rough him up? He's more than willing to fight back.

“He has great instincts of coverage, leverage, in man and in zone,” Titans coach Mike Vrabel said. “He is extremely athletic and very competitive. He has a huge catch radius. He is always a challenge.”

The result has been a period of nearly unmatched consistency: Kelce has at least 80 catches in seven straight seasons, one behind Jerry Rice, Marvin Harrison and Torry Holt for the most by any player in NFL history, and that trio along with Mike Evans, Cris Carter and Tim Brown are the only ones with more consecutive 1,000-yard seasons.

“That tight end position is hard. You take a beating,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. “You're blocking, you're catching over the middle, taking hits. And he just prepares himself the right way that he can be out there and available for us every week. Truly great player and a great teammate, for sure.”

Mahomes and Kelce have become close friends the past six years together in Kansas City, and they often sit together on plane rides home after games. And this past week, Mahomes knew that Kelce had broken through the 10,000-yard barrier, so he turned to him on the flight back from Denver and brought up the career milestone.

“He was like, ‘Oh yeah, man. It’s cool,'”&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/mahomes-brilliance-kc-blighted-more-turnover-trouble">Mahomes said.</a>&nbsp;“All he's worried about is winning. That's what all the great players are worried about, and his stats kind of come, but at the same time, he's just trying to win a lot of football games.”

Kelce has done that: He's helped the Chiefs reach the past four AFC championship games, winning two of them to reach the Super Bowl, and beating the San Francisco 49ers a few years ago to end their 50-year championship drought.

They're in the thick of it again, too. The Chiefs (10-3) are&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/chiefs-squander-control-afc-playoff-race-cincinnati">tied with the Bills</a>&nbsp;for the AFC's best record heading into Week 15, where a win would clinch their record seventh consecutive AFC West title.

“It's the type of guy he is,” Mahomes said. “Obviously he's talented, to be that big and run routes like that and have that speed. He could have had a ton of success really anywhere, but I think the type of guy he is, how he works and how he's just a teammate — a great teammate — I think that's why he's kind of taken it to the next level. It's because everybody on that field, they enjoy watching him succeed, because of the type of guy that he is every day.”

It hasn’t exactly gone according to script.

At least half of what before the season looked like an enticing matchup featuring two mobile quarterbacks won’t be on display Sunday when Arizona visits Denver. Murray’s done for the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/new-england-patriots-arizona-cardinals-nfl-sports-kyler-murray-249614643be09b7a0e877c0d9944cf4e">season after tearing his ACL</a>&nbsp;on Monday night. Wilson remains in the league's concussion protocol and may come down to a game-time decision.

Instead, it could be a clash of backups in Colt McCoy for the Cardinals (4-9) and Brett Rypien for the Broncos (3-10) in what has become a less-than-tantalizing game with both teams faltering.

What could be at stake: Job security for their coaches, with Arizona’s Kliff Kingsbury and Denver’s Nathaniel Hackett each on the hot seat. The Cardinals have dropped three in a row and five of their past six. It was also recently&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/arizona-cardinals-new-england-patriots-nfl-sports-quentin-harris-c8859594e4c4eac576b3458a5e78cada">announced general manager Steve Keim</a>&nbsp;will take a leave of absence from the organization because of a health-related issue.

The Broncos are in the midst of a tailspin, too, losing five straight since a win over Jacksonville in London on Oct. 30. They've now missed the postseason for a seventh straight year.

Wilson is progressing through the necessary steps to possibly return after sustaining a head injury last weekend when he dived head-first for the goal line after scrambling for a 14-yard gain. He was replaced by Rypien in the fourth quarter of Denver’s 34-28 loss to Kansas City.

“We’re playing it day-by-day, minute-by-minute,” Hackett said of Wilson.

Earlier this season, Rypien filled in during a loss to the New York Jets as Wilson dealt with a pulled hamstring. Rypien threw for 225 yards and one interception. He also threw a touchdown pass to Jerry Jeudy after taking over last weekend as the Broncos rallied from a 27-0 deficit, only to fall short.

Stepping in for Murray will be the 36-year-old McCoy, who led the Cardinals to a 13-10 halftime lead against New England after Murray left the game, before the team faded in the second half.

“I’m saddened for Kyler," McCoy said. "I said it in postgame, but I spend more time with him than my kids, right? We’re close. We’re in the room together. I feel for him.”

Broncos safety Justin Simmons said of playing the final month of the season with no postseason possibility: “I’m just going to go out there and do my job at the highest level of ability that I can. I’m not going to leave anything left in the tank."

The last time the Cardinals played in Denver was 2014, when Peyton Manning threw for 479 yards and four touchdowns in a 41-20 win. The late Demaryius Thomas caught eight passes for 226 yards and two scores.

The Broncos have a 9-1-1 mark against the Cardinals in the regular season, including 5-0 at home.

McCoy has completed nearly 70% of his passes this season for 702 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. McCoy thought about retiring in 2020 after a litany of injuries, but decided to come back with the New York Giants before signing with the Cardinals last season.

“We’re not in the situation that we want to be in, but there’s some high-character guys in there,” McCoy said. “I think it’s my job, and a lot of the leaders on this team’s job, to get us all in the right mind(set) (to be) ready to go play this game, play out the rest of the season, treat it like professionals, and understand that the ball hasn’t bounced our way this year.”

Cardinals running back James Conner has rushed for 205 yards over his past two games, which is one of the most productive two-game stretches during his tenure with the team.

Conner ran for 85 yards and a touchdown against the Patriots. He probably would have had more opportunities on the ground, but when&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/new-england-patriots-arizona-cardinals-mlb-nfl-sports-b79a9f82f6ca3cfa2c58802184b5d22f">the Cardinals</a>&nbsp;fell behind by two touchdowns, they were forced to throw the ball more.

HOUSTON (AP) — The only thing standing between the Kansas City Chiefs and their seventh straight AFC West title are the lowly Houston Texans.

But the Chiefs know better than to overlook the one-win Texans, especially after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/houston-texans-dallas-cowboys-nfl-sports-jeff-driskel-fa8256dd0afa1b95d096d1f9856e0ec0">they nearly pulled off a huge upset over Dallas</a>&nbsp;last week.

“They played a great team with the Cowboys, and they were down there where they probably should’ve won,” Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. “In this league, you can take no one for granted. Those are NFL players. They have a lot of talented, young guys that play hard.

"We understand it’s going to be a great challenge for us, so we’re going to go out there and play our best football to win.”

The Chiefs (10-3) have won six of their last seven games. Meanwhile, the Texans (1-11-1) need a win to avoid losing nine straight for the first time since dropping the final 14 games of the 2013 season.

After dealing with Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott last week, Houston coach Lovie Smith knows his team faces another huge challenge this week in Mahomes, who leads the NFL in yards passing (4,160) and touchdowns (33).

“He can just do it all, and he’s got a history in the league now of that,” Smith said. “When you have a player like that, it makes everyone look better.”

The Texans returned to Davis Mills at quarterback last week after benching him for two games. But instead of only relying on him to run the offense,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/houston-texans-dallas-cowboys-nfl-sports-7d16549c2354a1d585213df8015c107c">Houston used a two-quarterback system</a>&nbsp;with Jeff Driskel taking some of the snaps.

Smith wouldn’t say if they plan to use the same plan at quarterback this week, but Mills said he liked how it worked against Dallas.

“We felt good about it,” he said. “Obviously, both of us have the mindset of whatever we can do to help the team win games. That’s what we’re doing. If (we) use the both-quarterback system, we’re trying to move the ball and score touchdowns. That’s our main focus.”

The Chiefs could have wide receiver Kadarius Toney back this week after missing most of the past four games with a hamstring injury. They also hope to add Mecole Hardman, who recently came off injured reserve for an abdominal issue, though it’s possible he is another week or two away.

“If you add speed to any offense that those two guys have,” Mahomes said, “it really opens up everybody else, because you have to account for those two guys one very play.”

The Texans could be without star rookie running back Dameon Pierce after he injured an ankle last Sunday. Pierce, who leads rookies with 939 yards rushing, has been one of the only bright spots in Houston’s terrible season.

“If Dameon can’t go, we know what he’s been to our offense this year,” Smith said. “He’s one of the best running backs in football. There would be a void. When a player can’t go, the void is sealed by others. We look to all options.”

The two other running backs on Houston’s roster are Dare Ogunbowale and Rex Burkhead, but neither has done much this season. Ogunbowale has eight carries for 27 yards and Burkhead has 80 yards on 26 carries.

Mahomes grew up in Tyler, Texas, and starred at Texas Tech, before becoming a first-round pick of the Chiefs, and has such an affinity for his home state that he has a home there for the offseason.

But the closest he’s come to playing in Texas over his first five-plus seasons in the league was in 2017, when he rode the bench behind Alex Smith for a game in Dallas.

“Houston is about a three-hour trip from Tyler,” he said, “so I’m sure there’s a lot more people coming than I even know. It’ll be cool for them to see me playing in my home state for sure.”

The Texans will see a familiar face Sunday with safety Justin Reid playing for the Chiefs. Reid was drafted by Houston in the third round of the 2018 draft and spent his first four seasons in Houston before signing with Kansas City this offseason.

“I’m excited,” Reid said. “I have a lot of personal relationships with a lot of those guys, a lot of love for those players, the coaching staff. So, it’s a fun game for me personally to go back in be in the atmosphere that I began my career in.”

Smith raved about Reid, who started 53 games in his four seasons in Houston.

“Justin Reid and I will have a lifetime relationship,” Smith said. “I consider him a friend, too. ... He’s playing excellent football for them. He can tackle. He checks off all the boxes when you’re looking for a good safety.”

🏈Chiefs can clinch AFC West title with win over Texans

MANHATTAN, Kan. -&nbsp;Kansas
State junior running back Deuce Vaughn became the second player in
school history to be named a two-time Consensus All-American, as the NCAA
announced Thursday the list of players who received one of the top honors
bestowed upon FBS football players.

Vaughn joins cornerback Chris Canty (1995 and 1996) as the
only two-time Consensus All-Americans in school history. Last season he became
the 11th player in K-State history to earn the distinction and the
first since Tyler Lockett in 2014. Others on the list include Jordy Nelson (WR,
2007), Terence Newman (CB, 2002), Mark Simoneau (LB, 1999), David Allen (PR,
1998), Martin Gramatica (PK, 1997), Jaime Mendez (1993), Sean Snyder (P, 1992)
and Gary Spani (LB, 1977). 

To be in consideration for Consensus All-America level, a
player must be named first team on at least two of the five selected All-America
teams — American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), Associated Press,
Football Writers Association of America, Sporting News and Walter Camp
Foundation. The NCAA combines the returner/all-purpose categories, in which
Vaughn was named to the list. He earned First Team All-America honors from the
AFCA, Associated Press and Sporting News as an all-purpose player.

Vaughn, a product of Round Rock, Texas, enters bowl season
ranked 10th nationally in scrimmage yards (rushing plus receiving) at 136.9
yards per game, while he is 11th with 1,425 total rushing yards. His rushing
total ranks fourth in school history, and he is just the third player in school
history with multiple 1,000-yard rushing seasons (Darren Sproles: 2002, 2003,
2004; Daniel Thomas: 2009, 2010).

A finalist for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award for a
second-straight season, Vaughn has 3,471 career rushing yards to rank second in
school history to Sproles (4,979), while he was the fastest player Big 12
history to reach 3,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in a career,
doing so in his 32nd game.

Vaughn was named the Most Outstanding Player in the 2022 Dr.
Pepper Big 12 Championship as he helped lead K-State to its third Big 12 title
with a 31-28 overtime victory over No. 3 TCU. The ninth-ranked Wildcats will
conclude the 2022 season as they take on No. 5 Alabama in the Allstate Sugar
Bowl on Saturday, December 31. The game, which will take place inside Caesars
Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, will kick at 11 a.m., and be televised by
ESPN.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs could set a franchise record Sunday in Houston with their 19th consecutive game of at least 300 yards of offense, and in the past eight of them, Patrick Mahomes and Co. have topped the 400-yard mark.

All without two of their top wide receivers.

That could change soon: The Chiefs hope Kadarius Toney, who practiced last week after a hamstring injury but was unavailable against the Broncos, will get back on the field for the first time in nearly a month. And they could have fellow wide receiver Mecole Hardman back in short order after an abdominal injury landed him on injured reserve.

“Getting Mecole and KT back will just add another dimension. They can do jet sweeps and stuff like that, but adding their speed, teams have to honor that,” Mahomes said Wednesday. “If you add speed to any offense that those two guys have, it really opens up everybody else, because you have to account for those two guys on every play.”

Toney, who is most likely to play against the Texans, only appeared in two games after his trade from the Giants to Kansas City when he got hurt against the Chargers. But signs were pointing to the 2021 first-round pick being an impact player, especially after hauling in four catches for 57 yards and a score the prior week against the Jaguars.

His ability to run jet sweeps, which Tyreek Hill ran so successfully for years, added another element to the offense.

“He had a little bit of a ramp-up last week, which was good,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “Came out of that feeling pretty good. We'll see how he does this week and make a decision down the road here. Take it day by day, see how he does.”

It's unclear how soon Hardman will be able to help what is already the league's second-highest scoring offense.

He was likewise in the midst of a productive stretch, scoring touchdowns in three straight games and five overall, when an abdominal injury landed the speedster on injured reserve.

That put Hardman out four weeks, and the Chiefs now have a 21-day window in which they must active him or put him on IR for the remainder of the season.

Hardman has been posting to social media about his readiness to return, though Reid said it wasn't necessarily the injury or shaking off any lingering rust that could be the biggest hurdle to getting back on the field.

“He lost a bunch of weight,” Reid said. “It was a matter of getting that back, but not with cheeseburgers — get back some good, hardy weight and strength, so he's been working on that. He's been working like crazy. And he's going to continue to do that here — do that this week. He's out at practice and that will add to it.”

The Chiefs are 10-3 and tied with the Bills for the AFC's best record, though Buffalo holds the head-to-head tiebreaker, and that means each of the remaining four games are crucial. And the Chiefs would struggle to find a better get-right opponent for the two wide receivers than the one-win Texans, whose pass defense is middle of the road.

To say the Chiefs have gotten by without Toney or Hardman is an understatement.

🏈Chiefs could soon have WRs Toney, Hardman back on offense

FHSU men’s soccer starting forward Blake Arndt will cross the commencement stage this week, graduating with a degree in Business Management from Fort Hays State University’s Werth College of Business and Entrepreneurship.

While most seniors are moving on to graduate school or into the workforce, Arndt will return after graduation to complete additional certifications and play one more season with the FHSU men’s soccer team.

“I knew I had the extra year of eligibility because of COVID, but I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted to do after graduation,” Arndt said. He had considered moving on to a graduate program and playing somewhere else for his final season. “I’m excited it worked out, and I will get to finish up here at Fort Hays State.”

This year, Arndt led the Tigers in goals scored with 6 in the fall season. Arndt has 24 goals and 7 assists over three seasons at Fort Hays State. Once again, he was selected by the United Soccer Coaches and the D2CCA for the All-Central Region Team and the All-GAC/MIAA First Team for the third year in a row. His other honors while at FHSU include being the 2020/21 GAC/MIAA New Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year.&nbsp;

Arndt didn’t start his college soccer career as a Tiger. He transferred to FHSU after a year and a half of playing Division 1 soccer at the University of Central Arkansas.&nbsp;

“I had a nice scholarship to go to Arkansas and wanted to like it there,” Arndt said. “But I realized by the end of the second season that it just wasn’t working out for me.”

Luckily, Arndt had a friend and former teammate of 10 years from Wichita, Alec Bevis, who was already playing at FHSU and talked Arndt into trying out for the team.&nbsp;

“I called up Alec and asked him about Hays,” Arndt recalled. “He told me that Hays was great and said I needed to come check it out.”&nbsp;

It didn’t take him long to realize that FHSU was special and that he wanted to make the switch.

“Hays is such a great place to live,” Arndt said. “Everyone in town and on campus is so friendly, I have made great friends on the team and in my classes, and some of my best friends from home were already here. I could tell right away that Hays was the place for me.”

Arndt found success not only on the soccer field but also in the business management program.

“I feel like the business management program has taught me a lot not only about the technical aspects of the field, but the courses have helped me develop in many ways. The professors have helped me become a better communicator; through course presentations, in writing and email, I am much more comfortable speaking than I was at the start of my program,” Arndt said.

While he found all of his coursework and his professors helpful and encouraging, Arndt had high praise for one, Dr. Robert Lloyd. Discussion-based courses, and courses where students were asked to share their ideas as part of the learning process, had the most appeal.

“Dr. Lloyd is one of my favorite professors,” Arndt said. “Having classes where we were expected to give PowerPoint presentations over a problem or question connected to the current course topic, and doing this every couple of weeks really helped with my public speaking.”

Arndt hopes to take what he has learned in his business management program and build on that. He is looking to add some certifications through the Health and Human Performance department before going on to study sports management.

“I’ve had such a great time and made so many friends at Fort Hays State,” Arndt said. “The soccer team has been so supportive, like a group of brothers.”

The friendships Arndt made at FHSU are clearly important to him and are one of the things he will miss most once he is finished. He hopes to be able to travel and visit some of the soccer players from other countries once he has time.

“I’ve met a lot of cool people here at FHSU, and being on the soccer team has allowed me to meet people from all around the world,” Arndt said. “I’ve got friends from Chile, Japan, Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Greece, everywhere. It would be great to just go visit them.”

Kansas State Football is celebrating its 2022 Big 12 title with the K-State Family by announcing a 19-stop Championship Trophy Tour beginning on Wednesday. 

The 2022 Big 12 Championship trophy will travel throughout the state of Kansas on a six-day tour, and the stops will include the opportunity for fans to take photos with the trophy.

After a stop in Salina on Monday, Dec. 19, the tour will stop at Hays Chevrolet, 2917 Vine, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., then to Meadow Lake Golf Course in Colby from 5 to 7 p.m.

This is the third weekly honor for a Tiger this season, more than any other team in the conference. Lindsey turned in a dominant performance at the Bob Smith Open, taking home first place at 174 pounds after defeating his four opponents by a combined score of 52-2. The sophomore did not give up an offensive point all day. All four wins were bonus-point affairs, including a 17-2 technical fall in his first round, a first-period pin in the quarterfinals, a 16-0 technical fall in the semifinals and a 9-0 major decision in the championship. A native of Derby, Kan., Lindsey is 16-2 so far this season. Nine of his wins have been bonus-point victories, including one pin, four technical falls and four major decisions. He has reached the placement round at all three open tournaments so far this season. The Tigers will compete once more before taking a break for the holiday season, with FHSU off to Indianapolis this weekend (Dec. 17-18) for the 43rd Midwest Classic.&nbsp;&nbsp;

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Royals designated right-handed pitcher&nbsp;Wyatt Mills&nbsp;for assignment.

Yarbrough, 30, pitched the first five seasons of his Major League career with the Tampa Bay Rays, where he went 40-31 with a 4.33 ERA (279 ER in 579.2 IP) in 127 appearances (59 starts).

He made the Rays Opening Day roster for the fifth straight season in 2022 but was limited to 20 appearances (9 starts) due to two stints on the Injured List from April 8-May 2 (left groin tightness) and from Sept. 23 through season’s end (right oblique strain). Over his last two stints with the Rays from July 16 through the end of the season, Yarbrough recorded a 3.52 ERA (18 ER in 46.0 IP) over 12 appearances (3 starts). He held opponents to 2 runs or fewer in 6 of his last 7 outings, including 4 scoreless appearances, and won 3 of his last 4 decisions after beginning the season 0-7.

Yarbrough won a career-best 16 games as a rookie in 2018, when he finished 5th&nbsp;in the American League Rookie of the Year ballot. The Monarchs are 1-2 on the the season with their two losses to state ranked 6A schools.

The Hays High girls, despite a win last week over Junction City, dropped one spot to No. 10 in the 5A girls rankings.

STARKVILLE, MS(AP) —Mike Leach, the gruff, pioneering and unfiltered college football coach who helped revolutionize the passing game with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-college-football-sports-mike-leach-texas-dc84b9b6c1f92acb64d1c5f37f82dd59">the Air Raid offense,</a>&nbsp;has died following complications from a heart condition, Mississippi State said Tuesday. He was 61.

Leach, who was in his third season as head coach at Mississippi State, fell ill Sunday at his home in Starkville, Mississippi. He was treated at a local hospital before being airlifted to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, about 120 miles (200 kilometers) away.

“Mike was a giving and attentive husband, father and grandfather. He was able to participate in organ donation at UMMC as a final act of charity," the family said in a statement issued by Mississippi State. "We are supported and uplifted by the outpouring of love and prayers from family, friends, Mississippi State University, the hospital staff, and football fans around the world. Thank you for sharing in the joy of our beloved husband and father’s life.”

Leach fought through a bout with pneumonia late in this season, coughing uncontrollably at times during news conferences, but seemed to be improving, according to those who worked with him.

News of him falling gravely ill swept through college football the past few days and left many who knew him stunned,&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Holgorsendana/status/1602140964742696961">hoping and praying</a>&nbsp;for Leach's recovery under grim circumstances.

His impact on college football over the last two decades runs deep and will continue for years to come.

Leach was known for his pass-happy offenses, wide-ranging interests — he wrote a book about Native American leader Geronimo, had a passion for pirates, a taught a class about insurgent warfare — and rambling, off-the-cuff news conferences.

Leach’s teams were consistent winners at programs where success did not come easy. In 21 seasons as a head coach at Texas Tech, Washington State and Mississippi State, Leach went 158-107. And his quarterbacks put up massive passing statistics, running a relatively simple offense called the Air Raid that he did not invent but certainly mastered.

An interview with Leach was as likely to veer off into politics, wedding planning or hypothetical mascot fights as it was to stick to football. He considered Donald Trump a friend before the billionaire businessman ran for president and then campaigned for him in 2016.

He traveled all over the world and his curiosity knew no bounds. He most appreciated those who stepped outside of their expertise.

“One of the biggest things I admire about Michael Jordan, he got condemned a lot for playing baseball. I completely admired that,” Leach told The Associated Press last spring. “I mean, you’re gonna be dead in 100 years anyway. You’ve mastered basketball and you’re gonna go try to master something else, and stick your neck out and you’re not afraid to do it, and know that a lot of people are gonna be watching you while you do it. I thought it was awesome.”

As much as Leach enjoyed digging into topics other than football, he was excellent at the Xs and Os.

Six of the 20 best passing seasons in major college football history were by quarterbacks who played for Leach, including four of the top six.
