HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs boys and girls basketball
teams dropped a home doubleheader Friday night against the Central Plains
Oilers at Al Billinger Fieldhouse in Hays.

The Central Plains girls used a 6-0 second half run to rally
from down three and beat the TMP girls 41-34.

Central Plains (3-2) opened the game on a 5-0 before Teagan
Gottschalk connected on her first three pointer of the season with just under
three minutes left in first quarter for a 5-3 Oilers lead.

Neither team was able to score for the rest of first quarter.

In the second quarter Brynn Rebel knocked down her first
career three pointer putting TMP up 6-5 but the lead was short-lived as Central
Plains answered back for a 7-6 lead. The Oilers were eventually able to double
up TMP for a 12-6 lead.

Gracyn Schippers scored five straight points pulling the
Monarchs (3-3) back within one at 12-11 and then Brooke Koenigsman tied the
game at 15 on a three pointer, but it was Central Plains who went to the
halftime break up 18-15.

Gottschalk and Shyanne Yost combined to score the first six
points of the second half giving TMP their largest lead of the game at 21-18
but Central Plains used a 6-2 run to retake the lead at 24-21 and the Oilers
never trailed again.

TMP trailed by six early in the fourth quarter and trimmed
the deficit to one late in the fourth but Central Plains converted enough free
throws down the stretch for the 41-34 victory.

Gracyn Schippers was the only Monarch to score in double figures
with 10 points.

The Central Plains boys used a 12-0 first half run to build
a double-digit lead and never trailed the rest of the way as the Oilers beat
the Monarchs 45-28 Friday.

TMP’s Logan Baalman opened the game with a field goal
putting TMP up 2-0 only to see Central Plains (4-1) answer with a 7-0 run
taking a 7-2 lead.

Central Plains was able to maintain at least a two-point
lead throughout the entire first quarter and they led by four at 11-7 after the
first quarter.

After Ian Nehls closed the gap back to two points at 11-9,
Central Plains went on a 12-0 run to build a 23-9 lead.

TMP (1-5) was down 10 at halftime at 25-15.

The Monarchs were held scoreless in the third quarter and
they were outscored 8-0 in the third quarter and trailed 33-15.

Central Plains went on to the 45-28 victory.

Caden Dinkel scored a team-high eight points.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco has been ruled out of the game in New England after having “a cleanup” surgery on his ailing shoulder, coach Andy Reid said Friday, adding that he expects one of the NFL's leading rushers to be back next week.

The Chiefs play the Patriots on Sunday in a game that was flexed out of its original Monday night timeslot.

Pacheco was coming off one of his best games of the season in Green Bay, when he ran 18 times for 110 yards and a score, when the shoulder issue surfaced on the Chiefs' injury report. He did not practice last week and missed the 20-17 loss to Buffalo, and while he participated in walk-throughs this week Pacheco was not ready for any sort of contact.

“Pacheco had a surgery on his shoulder and had some things taken out that were floaters in there, but he’s doing well. He’s moving around good,” Reid said. “We probably anticipate getting him back next week.”

The Chiefs will lean again this week on Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who had just 39 yards rushing on 11 carries against the Bills, and third-down back Jerick McKinnon, who was more effective both running the ball and catching it out of the backfield.

Left tackle Donovan Smith also will miss his second straight game with a neck stinger, leaving impressive rookie Wanya Morris to take his place. But the Chiefs got some positive news when linebacker Drue Tranquill returned to practice from a concussion, and when Mike Edwards returned to the field following an illness that had sidelined him earlier in the week.

Wide receiver Justyn Ross, who completed a six-game suspension Monday, returned to practice, but the Chiefs chose to continue using a temporary roster exemption for him. That keeps him from counting toward the club's 53-man roster limit.

Ross was granted diversion for his October arrest on misdemeanor charges of criminal damage and domestic battery.

“If we're going to do something, we'll do it next week,” Reid said, when asked about adding him onto the roster. “It was good for him to get out there and work. He did all of the scout team reps, so that was a good thing for him.”

🎧 Defend the Fort Podcast: FHSU Rewind-WBB vs. Tabor (Dec. 11, 2023)

HAYS, Kan. – It was a sunny, clear, and cool Friday morning in December in Hays, America, a week ago, and Tiger Basketball standout Bjarni Jonsson was still basking in the glow of a big victory.

The night before, Bjarni and his teammates had taken down perennial powerhouse and nationally ranked Northwest Missouri State University for the first time since the 2012-13 season. The 57-49 victory snapped a 16-game losing streak to the No. 17-ranked Bearcats.

“Before last night, I’d played them ten times and lost every time,” Bjarni said.

This is Bjarni’s final season with FHSU, and the team is off to an impressive 8-2 start.

“I think this team is more athletic than last year’s team, and we have a great mix of veterans and new guys. We are all committed to playing at the level Coach Johnson expects,” he said. “Our team defense was the difference in the Northwest Missouri game.”

Jonsson is not a last name you come across very often in Western Kansas. That’s because Bjarni Jonsson is not from around here. He is from Iceland, a wind-swept island nation in the northern Atlantic Ocean. Bjarni is from the coastal fishing town of Borgarnes, which is located north of the capital city of Reykjavik.

While soccer is the premiere sport for most Icelandic kids, Bjarni’s childhood asthma initially drove him to focus on the indoor sport of basketball. He would quickly fall in love with and excel in the sport.

Bjarni’s basketball career kicked into high gear when the lanky 6-foot 7-inch 15-year-old was invited to join the hometown Skallagrimur semi-professional team. Playing nightly against grown men, many with professional and American college experience, the young Bjarni had to adapt to a grinding and physical style of play.

“I had to get tough around the basket and more aggressive on defense pretty fast,” he said.

Bjarni went on to play on the U-18 Icelandic National Team in 2017 and the European Championships for the U-20 Icelandic National Team in 2018. A seasoned veteran of international competitions, he played 30 games for Iceland’s junior national team and two games for his nation’s national team.

One of his Skallagrimur teammates was former FHSU star Dom Samac. Through Samac, Bjarni connected with FHSU Men’s Basketball Coach Mark Johnson, who watched some film of the young Icelander and immediately saw the qualities he looks for in a potential recruit.

“Dom told us about him, and they sent us some film,” Coach Johnson said. “The main thing that stood out was his effort and toughness. I think his nickname was ‘Mr. Charge’ because he took so many charges and was just a physical and tough guy. With his size, quickness, and toughness, we thought he was definitely worthy of an opportunity to play here.”&nbsp;

Knowing little to nothing about the American college experience, let alone anything about life on the High Plains of Kansas, Bjarni took a leap of faith and committed to FHSU. While he encountered several challenges during his transition, he’s always enjoyed teammates who had his back. One of his best friends on the team is Junior Kaleb Hammeke.

“Kaleb and his family in Hutchinson and his grandparents here in Hays, Mr. and Mrs. Swift, are like my second families,” Bjarni said.

The global COVID pandemic necessitated significant changes to college sports throughout 2021. The pandemic also meant that Bjarni would have to remain in Iceland when he desperately wanted to be back on the FHSU campus, playing the game he loved. But it was also during the pandemic that a whirlwind courtship with the daughter of an Atlantic cod fisherman led to marriage for Bjarni and his wife, Bjorg. The two are expecting their first child next spring.

Bjarni will graduate on Friday, Dec. 15, with a degree in computer science and a wealth of professional experience from a recent computer science internship.

He can look back with pride on stellar academic and athletic careers at FHSU. He earned All-MIAA Honorable Mention honors last spring. He was named to the MIAA All-Defensive team in 2022 and 2023. He was also named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll in each of his seasons at FHSU.&nbsp;

Next up for Bjarni and Bjorg after he finishes his FHSU basketball career, this spring will be parenthood and pursuing professional playing opportunities in Europe.

“The dream would be playing in Spain, Germany, or Italy,” Bjarni said. “But I’ll go after the best opportunity for our family.”

Bjarni will close out his career as a Tiger during the second semester, and he and his teammates are determined to build on their fast start with a goal of stretching the season deep into March.

That’s because Bjarni Jonsson is not from around here. He is from Iceland, a wind-swept island nation in the northern Atlantic Ocean. Bjarni is from the coastal fishing town of Borgarnes, which is located north of the capital city of Reykjavik.While soccer is the premiere sport for most Icelandic kids, Bjarni’s childhood asthma initially drove him to focus on the indoor sport of basketball. He would quickly fall in love with and excel in the sport.Bjarni’s basketball career kicked into high gear when the lanky 6-foot 7-inch 15-year-old was invited to join the hometown Skallagrimur semi-professional team. Playing nightly against grown men, many with professional and American college experience, the young Bjarni had to adapt to a grinding and physical style of play.“I had to get tough around the basket and more aggressive on defense pretty fast,” he said.Bjarni went on to play on the U-18 Icelandic National Team in 2017 and the European Championships for the U-20 Icelandic National Team in 2018. A seasoned veteran of international competitions, he played 30 games for Iceland’s junior national team and two games for his nation’s national team.One of his Skallagrimur teammates was former FHSU star Dom Samac. Through Samac, Bjarni connected with FHSU Men’s Basketball Coach Mark Johnson, who watched some film of the young Icelander and immediately saw the qualities he looks for in a potential recruit.“Dom told us about him, and they sent us some film,” Coach Johnson said. “The main thing that stood out was his effort and toughness. I think his nickname was ‘Mr. Charge’ because he took so many charges and was just a physical and tough guy. With his size, quickness, and toughness, we thought he was definitely worthy of an opportunity to play here.”&nbsp;Knowing little to nothing about the American college experience, let alone anything about life on the High Plains of Kansas, Bjarni took a leap of faith and committed to FHSU. While he encountered several challenges during his transition, he’s always enjoyed teammates who had his back. One of his best friends on the team is Junior Kaleb Hammeke.“Kaleb and his family in Hutchinson and his grandparents here in Hays, Mr. and Mrs. Swift, are like my second families,” Bjarni said.The global COVID pandemic necessitated significant changes to college sports throughout 2021. The pandemic also meant that Bjarni would have to remain in Iceland when he desperately wanted to be back on the FHSU campus, playing the game he loved. But it was also during the pandemic that a whirlwind courtship with the daughter of an Atlantic cod fisherman led to marriage for Bjarni and his wife, Bjorg. The two are expecting their first child next spring.Bjarni will graduate on Friday, Dec. 15, with a degree in computer science and a wealth of professional experience from a recent computer science internship.He can look back with pride on stellar academic and athletic careers at FHSU. He earned All-MIAA Honorable Mention honors last spring. He was named to the MIAA All-Defensive team in 2022 and 2023. He was also named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll in each of his seasons at FHSU.&nbsp;Next up for Bjarni and Bjorg after he finishes his FHSU basketball career, this spring will be parenthood and pursuing professional playing opportunities in Europe.“The dream would be playing in Spain, Germany, or Italy,” Bjarni said. “But I’ll go after the best opportunity for our family.”But professional ball will have to wait.Bjarni will close out his career as a Tiger during the second semester, and he and his teammates are determined to build on their fast start with a goal of stretching the season deep into March.

Brady, 24, made 37 appearances across High-A Wisconsin and Double-A Biloxi in the Brewers system last year, combining to go 4-4 with a 2.69 ERA (23 ER in 77.0 IP) with 72 strikeouts and just 19 walks. Brady signed with the Brewers as a non-drafted free agent on July 27, 2022 by Brewers scout&nbsp;Adam Hayes, after playing in parts of three seasons at Brigham Young University (Utah).

HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State used an early 11-0 run to build a double-digit first half lead then opened the second half with a 15-2 run and defeated Bethel College 73-48 in their final non-conference game Wednesday at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

Bethel's only lead of the game came on the game's opening basket, but the Tigers scored the next 11 and led by as many as 17 in the first half and as many as 28 with 3:14 to play.

Traejon Davis&nbsp;led the Tigers with a career-high 19 points, going 6-of-8 from the field and a perfect 7-of-7 at the free-throw line. He also notched a career-high four steals and pulled down eight rebounds. Jahiem Holden&nbsp;scored 14 points and Shaun Riley added&nbsp;11.

The Tigers (8-2) had another strong defensive effort, holding Bethel (5-6) to 28-percent shooting and forcing them into 17 turnovers, outscoring them 19-5 in points off turnovers. 

FHSU shot 45 percent for the game despite making only 3-of-18 shots from 3-point range.

Fort Hays State, who leads NCAA Division II in scoring defense, has held the opposition under 50 points in six of the last seven games which jhave all resulted in wins. 

Fort Hays State returns to conference play this weekend at Newman University on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium in Wichita.

Fort Hays State Men's Basketball will finish up its non-conference slate of the regular season when it plays host to Bethel College on Wednesday night (Dec. 13) at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays. The Tigers enter at 7-2 overall, while the Threshers come into the contest at 5-6 overall.

Fort Hays State is coming off a pair of big conference wins at home this past week. The Tigers defeated a pair of NABC Top 25 ranked teams in back-to-back games, knocking off No. 17 Northwest Missouri State 57-49 and No. 22 Missouri Western 73-49.The results this past week marked the first time the Tigers won back-to-back games against ranked opponents since the 2010-11 season, when they knocked off a No. 8 ranked Missouri Southern squad in the MIAA Tournament Championship game and then No. 23 ranked West Texas A&amp;M in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. It was also the first back-to-back wins against ranked teams at Gross Memorial Coliseum since the 1997-98 season, when the Tigers defeated No. 14 ranked Metro State and No. 24 Nebraska-Kearney in consecutive games. FHSU was also ranked in the Top 25 in all four of those aforementioned games.

The Tigers hold a 16-2 advantage in the all-time series with Bethel College. They have won 16 straight games in the series, going all the way back to the 1925-26 season. The Tigers won last year's meeting between the teams 90-59 in Hays.

In 24-point win over Missouri Western, which matched the third-largest margin of victory over a ranked opponent in FHSU's Division II history, Elijah Nnanabu&nbsp;recorded a career-high seven steals. He also led the way for the Tigers in points (17), while tying for the team high in rebounds (7) and assists (3). He ranks second on the team in scoring at 11.8 points per game behind Kaleb Hammeke's 13.3 per game. R.J. Crawford&nbsp;continues to average double figures in scoring as well at 11.0 per game. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Andy Reid had no interest Wednesday in reliving the Chiefs' controversial loss to Buffalo last weekend.

Reid curtly batted away continued questions&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-kadarius-toney-offside-a81e77e06a1fa06490e9d303976148da">about the 20-17 defeat,</a>&nbsp;where a rare offside penalty on wide receiver Kadarius Toney negated what would have been the go-ahead touchdown in the final minutes.

Reid took issue with the fact that officials tend to give warnings when a player lines up offside, and that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/offside-chiefs-bills-kelce-toney-9b62fb1c2cb9219e84faa9d59c85ddd6">flags are rarely thrown</a>&nbsp;for such an infraction.

“We brought the guys in yesterday and they understand all our focus is straight ahead on the Patriots, and every day we have to practice for this game is important,” Reid said before practice. “I felt that way after the game. They know the importance of it.”

The Chiefs (8-5), who have lost four of their past six, visit New England on Sunday.

Most of the criticism has been directed at Kansas City wide receivers, who lead the NFL in dropped passes by a wide margin, and more recently Toney, whose penalty against Buffalo proved to be so costly.

“We're not rolling like we have in the past. I know there's a lot of media pointing fingers at some of the skill players that we have,” Kelce said. “All this that I hear in the media right now about who the Chiefs are, it's only building that beast that we've been trying to create this entire year. It's only going to keep making us better and better, going through these learning experiences and going through these tough games.”

The Chiefs have had plenty of those lately.

Four of their past five games have been decided by one possession, and three have been losses, including another in Green Bay in which officials took some heat. They didn't throw a flag for a potential defensive pass interference penalty on the Packers, so rather than have a chance to tie the game late, Kansas City headed home with a 27-19 loss.

In fact, the Chiefs are off to their worst start through 13 games since Patrick Mahomes became the starting QB in 2018.

“I think once the game was over (Sunday), you kind of get to sleep, come back Monday and Tuesday, and everybody's mind was in the right spot,” Mahomes said Wednesday. “In this league, you have to get past that stuff.”

Mahomes was as angry as any point in his professional career after the penalty on Toney, and teammates nearly had to hold him back as he chased after officials for an explanation. When the game ended, and Mahomes was shaking hands with Bills star Josh Allen at midfield, he told his fellow quarterback: "Offensive offside in that moment, man — terrible.”

Mahomes said Wednesday he regretted the way he handled the end of the game.

“Definitely emotion talking when I was talking to Josh at midfield, just to lose the football game in a tough way,” he said. “He had nothing to do with it. Just show better sportsmanship. Tell him ‘great game’ and keep it moving.”

In this case, keep it moving into Sunday's trip to New England.

“All I can do is go about business like I do every week,” said Mahomes, whose team now leads the AFC West by a single game over Denver. “The division is tight. The AFC is tight. We just have to go out there and play our best football.”

NOTES: RB Isiah Pacheco (shoulder) and LT Donovan Smith (neck) remained out of practice Wednesday. LB Drue Tranquill planned to be on the field, an indication that he is close to clearing the concussion protocol. ... LB Leo Chenal and FS Mike Edwards were out with an illness.

HAYS - The 2023 Western Athleic Conference Golfer of the Year is headed to Fort Hays State University to continue her athletic journey.

Hays High's Abbie Norris averaged 82.5 strokes per round this past season. It marked an improvement of 15 strokes from her freshman season when she medaled in two of ten tournaments and made the All-WAC 2nd team list.

She improved by nearly ten strokes per round her sophomore year and medaled in seven of ten tournaments. Norris made the All-WAC 1st team, a spot she would remain for three years.

Norris twice made the 5A Second Team All-State after finishing in 14th as a junior and 11th as a senior at the two days 5A State tournament.

Her senior season average of 82.5 is the 12th best season in Hays High Lady Indian Golf history. She medaled in 17 of 20 tournaments in her junior and senior campaigns.&nbsp;

Norris was part of 40 varsity tournaments in four years, medaling as a team in 38 of those. 24 times the Indians took home first and eleven times second. This past season the Indians were state runner-up at the 5A tournament.

OAKLEY – The TMP-Marian Monarchs boys and girls basketball teams left
the city of Hays for the first time on Tuesday and picked up a pair of road
wins in the Mid-Continent League.

GIRLS: TMP 54, Oakley 46 After trailing most of the way through the first half, TMP’s
Claire Schippers knocked down a three pointer to open the second half and sparked
a 24-7 run through the third and beginning of the fourth quarter leading TMP to
a 54-46 win Tuesday at Oakley High School.

Gracyn Schippers gave TMP the 3-0 to open the game but it
was a lead that was short-lived. Oakley answered with a 9-2 run and led 9-5.

The Plainsmen controlled the entire first quarter, never letting
the Monarchs (3-2, 2-0 MCL) close inside of two points.

TMP’s Teagan Gottschalk closed the first quarter and opened
the second with four of her career-high 11 points helping TMP pull within one
at 16-15 but Oakley (2-3, 1-1 MCL) built their lead back and even took a
five-point lead at 20-15 with just under seven minutes to play in the first
half.

After TMP’s coach Rose McFarland took a timeout, the Monarchs
ended the first half down just two at 25-23.

Claire Schippers, on the opening possession of the third
quarter, hit her first of two three pointers in the third quarter to put TMP on
top 26-25 and they never trailed again.

The Schippers three sparked a 17-7 run in the third quarter
that saw TMP go from down one to up 40-32.

After TMP trailed 25-20 with two and a half minutes left in the
first half the Monarchs outscored Oakley 24-7 and they never trailed again.

Oakley trimmed to TMP lead to 44-42 with just under four and
a half minutes to play with a 13-3 run but TMP was able to close out the game outscoring
Oakley 7-2 over the final four minutes of the game.

Claire Schippers scored a game and career-high 15 points.
Brooke Koenigsman had 14 points and five rebounds and Teagan Gottschalk added a
career-high 11 points for TMP.

BOYS: TMP 49, Oakley 34 The TMP-Marian boys used a 13-2 first half run on their way
to a 49-34 win over Oakley Tuesday at Oakley High School.

The first quarter contained four ties with TMP taking a
brief 11-8 lead on a Ty Schmeidler three pointer. Oakley (0-5, 0-2 MCL) outscored
the Monarchs 4-0 to end the quarter with a 12-11 lead.

Will Eck opened the second quarter with a steal and layup to
put the Monarchs up 13-12, sparking a 13-2 run and they never trailed again.

Eck scored seven of the 13 points during the run as TMP built
a 24-14 lead.

TMP (1-4, 1-1 MCL) took a 32-26 lead into the halftime
break.

In the second half Oakley closed within six at 32-26 but TMP
answered with a 15-4 run to end third quarter and open the fourth leading by 17
at 47-30.

The Monarchs went on to pick up their first win of the
season 49-34.

Eck led all scorers with a career-high 13 points. Ian Nehls
was in double-figures for the third time this season with 11 points and 10
rebounds.

TMP will host Central Plains on Friday night.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State Men's Basketball is back among the receiving votes section of the NABC Top 25 Poll, released on Tuesday. The Tigers are one of four teams from the MIAA recognized in the latest edition. FHSU is off to a 7-2 start this season, including a 3-1 mark in MIAA play so far.

With the 57-49 win in Hays last week, Fort Hays State ended Northwest Missouri State's streak of being ranked in the Top 25 for 121 consecutive polls, which dated back to February of the 2015-16 season. Northwest Missouri State is now among the teams receiving votes in the poll with Fort Hays State. The Tigers ended a long 16-game losing skid to the Bearcats that dated back to the 2012-13 season. In the Top 25 this week from the MIAA is Central Oklahoma (No. 7) and Emporia State (No. 15), which are both currently 9-1 overall after a UCO win in a non-conference game on Monday.

Fort Hays State has ended two impressively long Northwest Missouri State streaks in national coaches' polls this year as FHSU Football ended Northwest Missouri State's streak of being in the Top 25 for 242 consecutive polls going back to 2003 with a 17-6 win in Hays back in September.

The Bearcats were not the only ranked team the Tigers took out last week. FHSU knocked off a No. 22 ranked Missouri Western team on the heels of their win over Northwest Missouri. It was the first time the Tigers won back-to-back games over NABC ranked teams since the 2010-11 season, and first time they won back-to-back home games over ranked teams since 1997-98.

Ahead for the Tigers this week is a non-conference game at home with Bethel College on Wednesday night and an MIAA contest at Newman University on Sunday (Dec. 17).

🏀🎥 Monarchs travel to Oakley for MCL matchup

The Fort Hays State women's basketball team slid three spots in the WBCA Division II Coaches Poll this week (Dec. 12), moving to No. 21 in the national rankings.

This is the second time in program history the Tigers have been ranked 21st in the national coaches poll, and the first time since January 2013. The Tigers are 1-1 all-time when ranked 21st and 149-39 all-time when ranked in the WBCA Top 25.Fort Hays State is one of two MIAA programs ranked in the top 25, with Central Missouri holding steady at No. 3. Northwest Missouri State and Pittsburg State are still in the also receiving votes category this week.

The Tigers are receiving votes in this week's D2CSC National Media Poll, dipping from 19th last week.

Fort Hays State will take its 8-1 record on the road this week when the Tigers take on the Newman Jets Sunday afternoon (Dec. 17, 1:30 p.m.) in Wichita before battling Central Oklahoma on Tuesday (Dec. 19, 5:30 p.m.) in Edmond.
