With the 2023 portion of the high school wrestling season in the books, Hays High senior Lexi Burton knows where she will be wrestling in college.&nbsp;

Burton signed a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday to wrestle at Fort Hays State University. The Tigers added wrestling to their list of offerings but won't start competing as a team until the 2024-2025 season.

The Hays High senior is a two-time state placer. She finished 5th in 2023 and 6th in 2022. This year Burton is ranked second in class 6-5A at 140 pounds and has a 12-0 record so far. Her career record sits at 85-34.

The Hays High girls wrestling team is currently ranked eighth. Burton's has two teammates currently ranked. Tionna Napue is third at 120 and Addison Otte is sixth at 125.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ed Budde, who spent 14 years playing along the offensive line of the Kansas City Chiefs and helped the franchise win its first Super Bowl with a victory over Minnesota in 1970, died Tuesday. He was 83.

The family announced his death through a statement issued by the Chiefs. No cause of death was provided.

Budde was born on Nov. 2, 1940, in Highland Park, Michigan. He was a standout at Denby High School in Detroit before heading to Michigan State, where he was an All-American in 1962 under Hall of Fame coach Duffy Daugherty.

It was as a professional that Budde earned his reputation for being a reliable, hard-nosed lineman. He was the fourth overall pick of the Eagles in the 1963 NFL Draft and the eighth overall pick of the Chiefs in the AFL Draft, and ultimately chose to play for the upstart team coached by Hank Stram in the years before the two professional leagues would merge.

“He was a cornerstone of those early Chiefs teams that brought pro football to Kansas City,” Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said in a statement Tuesday. “He never missed a game in the first nine seasons of his career, and he rightfully earned recognition as an All-Star, a Pro Bowler and a Super Bowl champion.”

Indeed, Budde was one of the leaders of fearsome Chiefs teams that won AFL titles in 1966 and 1969, then beat the Vikings in Super Bowl IV. He was a five-time AFL All-Star and was chosen to two Pro Bowls once the league merged with the NFL, and he was chosen as a member of the All-AFL Team before his retirement following the 1976 season.

Budde's son, Brad Budde, was an All-American offensive lineman at Southern California before he was drafted by the Chiefs with the 11th overall pick in 1980. They remain the only father-son duo to be first-round picks by the same NFL franchise.

The elder Budde remained active in the Kansas City area after his playing career, serving as the longtime president of the Kansas City chapter of the NFL Alumni organization. He was joined by his son on stage at Kansas City's Union Station for the NFL Draft in April, where they announced the Chiefs' second-round selection of wide receiver Rashee Rice.

“He was well-loved in the Kansas City community,” Hunt said, “and he was a great father to Brad, Tionne and John. My family and the entire Chiefs organization extend our sincere condolences to Carolyn and the Budde family.”

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs split a home doubleheader to close
out the 2023 calendar year Tuesday night with the boys picking up their second
win of the season while the girls dropped their first MCL contest of the year.

GIRLS: Hoxie 50, TMP 29 The Hoxie Indians (6-0, 3-0 MCL) used a 27-2 second half run
to build a double-digit lead on their way to a 50-29 win over TMP at Al
Billinger Fieldhouse.

TMP (3-4, 2-1 MCL) opened with a 2-0 lead on a Shalee Gottschalk
field goal but Hoxie answered with a 7-0 run and led by five twice in the first
quarter at 7-2 and 9-4. 

TMP trimmed the deficit to 9-6 at the end of the first
quarter and then took the lead to open the second, outscoring Hoxie 7-3.

It was Brooke Koenigsman’s three pointer that put TMP up
13-12 early in the second quarter. But that was the last lead TMP had.

Hoxie led by one at halftime and one again to open the third
quarter, at 20-19, but they then held TMP scoreless for the rest of the third
quarter and put together a 27-2 run to go up 47-21 in the fourth quarter.

The Indians went on to the 50-29 victory, ending a four-game
losing streak to TMP.

TMP’s Brooke Koenigsman scored a team-high seven points.
Hoxie’s Emily Bainter and Josey Kennedy each scored 15 points.

BOYS: TMP 54, Hoxie 45 The TMP boys build a 20-point second half lead but had to
hold on down the stretch for a 54-45 victory.

The game started with neither team able to build much of a lead.
There were five ties and seven lead changes before TMP (2-5, 2-1 MCL) secured a
13-11 lead at the end of the first quarter on back-to-back Caden Dinkel field
goals.

TMP extended their lead to 20-13 early in the second quarter
on a Ty Schmeidler three-pointer, Schmeider scored 11 of his 14 points in the second
quarter.

Hoxie (2-4, 0-3 MCL) was able to cut the lead back to two
after a five-point possession but after at TMP timeout the Monarchs scored the
next nine and led 29-18.

They built a 15 point lead at halftime at 35-20 thanks to
the third three pointer of the quarter by Schmeidler.

The Monarchs lead grew to 20, at 45-25 in the third quarter
but Hoxie finished the third quarter and opened the fourth outscoring TMP 18-2
trimming the lead to four points at 47-43.

The Monarchs though made just enough free throws down the stretch
on their way to the 54-45 victory.

Schmeidler and Dinkel tied for a game-high 14 points each.

TMP is off until after the New Year when they host Sacred
Heart and January 5th.

🏀 TMP splits with Hoxie in final games before Christmas

Hays High hosted a pair of state ranked Wichita Heights teams on Tuesday evening. The Heights boys entered as the #1 team in 6a while the girls checked in at #3.

Girls #3-6A Heights 45, Hays 22

Hays made just one field goal in the first half and couldn't overcome a 14 point halftime deficit as they fell to Heights 45-22.

The Falcons opened the game on an 8-0 run before the Indians scored three straight free throws. The Indians only first half field goal came with 6:10 left in the second quarter to close the game down to 11-6.

Hays had the ball on two occasions where they could have cut the game down to a one possession contest, but missed a layup and turned the ball over. Heights closed the half on a 10-1 run and lead 21-7 at half.

Hays never threatened in the second half. The Falcons outscored Hays 9-5 in the third quarter and 15-8 during the fourth for the final of 45-22. Each team scored a season low in the game.

The record for Hays evens at 3-3 while Heights remains unblemished at 5-0.&nbsp;

Hays led three different times in the first half but couldn't hold off the #1 team in 6A Wichita Heights, falling 57-38.&nbsp;

The Indians scored the first points of the game and then took the lead back on a 6-0 first quarter run at 10-9. Heights scored with one second left in the first quarter to lead 11-10 after eight minutes.

Hays once again took the lead on a 6-0 run at 16-14. That would be the Indians last advantage as Heights closed the half on a 10-0 run. The final three points came on a banked in three pointer as time expired to give the Falcons some breathing room at 24-17.

Heights opened the second half on a 16-4 run to provide all the cushion they needed for a 57-38 victory. Hays did close the gap down to 13 with just under seven minutes remaining but couldn't scored to pull any closer.

Wichita State signee T.J. Williams scored a game high 22. Hays was led by a career high 12 points by Izaac Fox.

The Indians fall to 2-4 on the year. Heights improves to 5-0.

Hays opens Western Athletic Conference play on Friday by hosting Liberal.

🏀 Hays girls and boys fall to state-ranked Heights

EDMOND, Okla. - The 16th-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team knocked down a season-high 13 3-pointers and had four players scores in double figures as they closed out their pre-Christmas schedule with an 84-66 win over Central Oklahoma Tuesday at Hamilton Field House.

The 13 3-pointers are the most for the Tigers in a game since they buried 13 in the same building three years ago (12/15/20). In their last seven trips to Edmond, the Tigers are averaging 10 made 3-pointers per game, including three games with at least 12 triples and at least eight long-distance makes in all seven contests.

Fort Hays State (10-1, 5-1 MIAA) scored the first five points of the game on a layup from Olivia Hollenbeck and and Emma Ruddle. After Central&nbsp; Oklahoma (2-10, 1-5 MIAA) scored the next six points to take a one-point lead, the scored the next 10 and would never trail again.

Ruddle added two more 3-pointers in the first quarter and a triple from Kate Dilsaver&nbsp;pushed the lead to 13 at 21-8. Dilsaver added two more threes early in the second quarter, giving the junior a career-high three long-range makes. A traditional 3-point play from Hollenbeck put the Tigers up by as many as 15 before the Bronchos closed within 11 by the end of the second quarter at 41-30.

The Tigers continued to pour it on in the second half hitting six of nine form deep including two makes from Ellie Stearns&nbsp;and one each from Sydney Golladay, Jessie Sallach, Ruddle and Brooke Loewe. Golladay's triple early in the third quarter pushed the Tigers lead to 20 points at 52-32.

UCO would chip away and get within 13 and the end of the third quarter and trimmed the deficit to 10 twice in the fourth quarter. The Tigers finished the game 2-for-2 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe over the final two minutes to hold the Bronchos at bay.

Katie Wagner led the team with a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double after hitting 9-of-10 from the charity stripe, helping FHSU to a 77.3 percent shooting day at the free-throw line (17-of-22). Hollenbeck added 14, Dilsaver a season-high 13 and 12 from Ruddle. Loewe dished out five assists, with Wagner and Hollenbeck both dishing out four assists each.

Fort Hays State hit a season-high 50.9 percent from the floor (27-of-53) and hit 61.9 percent from behind the arc (13-of-21), knocking down more than 60 percent from behind the arc for the first time in nearly three years (64.3 percent at PSU, 1/23/21).

The Tigers outrebounded UCO by 10, 37-27. Fort Hays State scored 24 fast-break points, its most in more than two years. The Tigers were credited with assists on 21 of 27 made baskets.

After playing just three of their first 11 games at home, the Tigers will return to Gross Memorial Coliseum to start a three-game homestand after the holiday break when FHSU hosts Bethany College on Saturday, December 30 beginning at 2 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dilsaver added two more threes early in the second quarter, giving the junior a career-high three long-range makes. A traditional 3-point play from Hollenbeck put the Tigers up by as many as 15 before the Bronchos closed within 11 by the end of the second quarter at 41-30.The Tigers continued to pour it on in the second half hitting six of nine form deep including two makes from Ellie Stearns&nbsp;and one each from Sydney Golladay, Jessie Sallach, Ruddle and Brooke Loewe. The women's contest will be the only game of the night, with the men's game moved to Sunday, December 31 due to the UCO men's team taking part in a non-conference tournament this week.

The Tiger women (9-1, 4-1 MIAA) are coming off their largest margin of victory ever in an MIAA contest, an 85-35 win at Newman on Sunday. The Bronchos (2-9, 1-4 MIAA) will play on back-to-back days after falling to Nebraska-Kearney Monday afternoon, 66-56.

After limiting Newman to just 35 points on Sunday, including holding the Jets without a field goal for the entire first quarter, the Tiger defense reduced its points against average to 50.9 points per game. That total is the best in the MIAA and is fourth-best in all Division II.

Fort Hays State is 19-5 all-time against the Bronchos, including wins in each of the last eight meetings. The Tigers are 7-4 on the road against UCO, with FHSU winning each of the last five meetings in Edmond.

The Tigers poured in four 3-pointers in the first three minutes of a 91-62 blowout at Central Oklahoma last season (2/4/23). FHSU finished the game with 12 3-pointers, including seven from Megan Earney for a career-high 21 points.&nbsp; All 12 Tigers that made the trip scored. FHSU's 91 points were a season-high.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals made official their deal with starting pitcher Michael Wacha on Monday, a $32 million, two-year pact that includes a player option for 2025 and incentives based on the number of innings he pitches.

The Royals have been among the busiest teams in the majors this offseason, bolstering their rotation in free agency by signing Wacha and Seth Lugo along with their bullpen by signing Chris Stratton and Will Smith. They also landed power-hitting outfielder Hunter Renfroe to give their lineup a veteran presence along with some additional pop.

The deal for Wacha includes a $16 million salary next year, a $16 million option and $50,000 bonuses for pitching 105, 110, 115 and 120 innings each season. When it is combined with the other contracts given out, the Royals have committed well over $100 million in free agency to improve the club.

The Royals are coming off a 106-loss season in manager Matt Quatraro's first season, and the first full season in which J.J. Picollo has been general manager. But in a division without a clear-cut favorite, and with promising young talents such as Bobby Witt Jr. and Vinnie Pasquantino already on the roster, the Royals saw an opportunity to go from worst to first in the AL Central.

“We feel like it's time for us to make a significant move,” Picollo acknowledged last week.

The Royals also are trying to rally public support for a new downtown ballpark to replace aging Kauffman Stadium, and putting a winning team on the field would help. They hoped to announce a location for the new stadium by the end of September, but their ongoing discussions with political leaders in multiple locations have slowed the progress on their plans.

The 32-year-old Wacha, a former first-round pick of the Cardinals, spent last season with Lugo in San Diego. He went 14-4 with a 3.22 ERA in 24 starts for the Padres, the third time he has had at least 10 wins and a 3.40-or-better ERA in his career.

WICHITA, Kan. - Traejon Davis scored a career-high 21 points and Kaleb Hammeke added a double-double but it couldn't overcome Newman's 12 three-pointers as the Jets defeated Fort Hays State 77-75 in overtime to Newman at Fugate Gymnasium Sunday afternoon.

Two of the Tigers (8-3, 3-2 MIAA) losses have come in overtime on the road. The loss also snapped the Tigers eight-game winning and was the Jets (6-5, 3-3 MIAA) first over FHSU in MIAA play.

Fort Hays State played the game short-handed with Conner Landell and Shaun Riley out for the game for a violation of team rules and Lucas Hammeke still in street clothes with a knee injury, but it didn't stop them from building&nbsp; a 12-point lead with a little over five and a half minutes to play in the first half, but the Jets closed the half on a 17-6 run to pull within one at 35-34.

A 10-2 Fort Hays State run&nbsp; pushed their lead to eight at 49-41 but Newman answered with a barrage of threes and used a 17-4 run to go up eight with just under six minutes to play.

The Tigers scored the next 10 points to go up 68-66. The Jets would score to tie the game and had a chance to win it in regulation but missed a corner three as time expired.

Fort Hays State opened the extra period on a 7-3 run to lead 75-71 with 1:20 to go, but a 3-point play from Newman's Stevie Strong&nbsp; and then a layup by Devin Walker&nbsp;pushed the Jets back in front. Walker then hit one of two free throws with three seconds left to give the Jets a 2-point lead. Kaleb Hammeke then missed a running 3-point try at the buzzer.

Davis hit three 3-pointers and led the Tigers with a career-high 21 points which came on the heals of a then career-best 17 points in Wednesday's win over Bethel College. &nbsp;Hammeke finished with 19 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. He also led the team with five assists. Jahiem Holden scored&nbsp;16 points.

Strong led the Jets with 25 points and hit five of their 12 threes. He also dished out a team-high eight assists. Thomas Zevgaras had a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds. The pair combined for over 50 percent of the scoring for Newman.

Fort Hays State returns to action after the holiday break at nationally ranked Central Oklahoma on Sunday, December 31 at 3:30 p.m.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — This was a surprise look, even for the always unpredictable Patrick Mahomes.

The quarterback with a highlight reel full of left-handed throws, contortionist arm angles and no-look passes got down in a three-point stance in the single wing formation on Sunday to served as a decoy for running back Jerick McKinnon's touchdown pass.

“That was sweet,” said Mahomes, who guessed that hadn't lined up with his hand on the turf since running the 40-yard dash at the NFL combine before he was drafted seven years ago. “That play was awesome. That’s a hard team to score on in the red zone. One of the best.”

Mahomes passed for 305 yards and threw two TD passes of his own to help the defending Super Bowl champions snap a two-game losing streak, thrilling Chiefs superfan Taylor Swift and all the Swifties in New England with a 27-17 victory.

With the pop star in a luxury suite watching current beau Travis Kelce — and a whole bunch of her fans at the stadium just to see her — the Kansas City tight end caught five passes for 28 yards, but also had a potential touchdown bounce off his hands.

McKinnon also ran for a touchdown and Rashee Rice caught nine passes for 91 yards and one touchdown. Clyde Edwards-Helaire had a season-high 101 yards from scrimmage and leaped in the back of the end zone to bring down a high Mahomes TD pass as the Chiefs (9-5) opened a two-game lead in the AFC West over the Broncos, who lost on Saturday to Detroit.

“When you're as close as the AFC is right now, wins are hard to get. And they’re important,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said, noting that New England (3-11) has lost seven games by one score. “This Patriots team is so close. They’re doing a nice job with their defense. They’re salty.”

Bailey Zappe, making his third straight start in place of benched first-round draft pick Mac Jones, completed 23 of 31 passes for 180 yards for the Patriots. New England (3-11) lost for the sixth time in seven games and — with Carolina's victory — moved just one game back in the race for the No. 1 overall draft pick.

Flexed out of “Monday Night Football” because of their ineptitude — an NFL first — the Patriots seemed to have third billing on the day, behind Swift and her beau’s team, which has won two of the past four NFL titles and has all of the star power New England once claimed.

In what could be the penultimate home game of coach Bill Belichick’s tenure, the six-time Super Bowl champions took a 10-7 lead before allowing 20 straight points.

“It's wild to even think about. But I've got a feeling that guy still has some football left in him," Kelce said. I’ve got all the respect in the world for that guy. Every single time I go up against him, it’s the toughest job in the NFL, to go up against a Belichick defense."

Fans filed in carrying signs shouting out to Swift; others lined up along the ramps and walkways hoping she would pass by on her way to the luxury boxes. Kelce himself walked past a Swift poster commemorating top acts that have come to Gillette Stadium.

Swift, who is on a break from her Eras Tour, was shown on the scoreboard early in the second quarter, wearing a Chiefs knit cap and sweatshirt. The crowd shrieked; she stuck out her tongue playfully, waved and blew the fans a kiss.

The Chiefs (9-5) improved to 5-2 with Swift in attendance. The best the Patriots could offer was Belichick friend Jon Bon Jovi, who rang the lighthouse bell before the game and was greeted with tepid applause when he was shown on the scoreboard during the game.

Harrison Butker missed a 39-yard field goal on Kansas City’s opening drive, snapping a string of 61 straight made kicks that was one short of his own franchise record. New England’s Chad Ryland matched him, missing from 41 yards out on his first try.

On the next play, Mahomes connected with Edwards-Helaire for 48 yards to the New England 15. Two plays later, McKinnon took a direct snap and flipped it to Rashee Rice for the 4-yard touchdown pass.

Zappe completed a 16-yard touchdown to Hunter Henry, and New England capitalized on Mahomes' first interception for a field goal that made it 10-7 lead late in the second quarter. Mahomes hit McKinnon from 8 yards to give Kansas City the lead and converted from 29 yards to make it 17-10.

On the Patriots’ next play, Willie Gay intercepted Zappe and ran it back 24 yards to the New England 7. Two plays later, Mahomes lofted one to Edwards-Helaire in the back of the end zone to give the Chiefs a 24-10 lead.

Kansas City led 27-10 when Mahomes’ pass bounced off Kadarius Toney’s hands and was intercepted by Jahlani Tavai. Two plays later, Kevin Harris scampered 18 yards for the touchdown.

After the Chiefs were stopped, Ekow Boye-Doe downed Tommy Townsend's punt at the 1 inch-line. The Patriots could not make any progress, turning the ball over on downs at their 7 after Zappe's pass was incomplete on a fourth-and-4.

“That was pretty amazing. That was close,” Reid said. “I’ve never been that fast, but I know it’s tough to control.”

Chiefs WR Skyy Moore came out of the game with a swollen left knee. ... Patriots OL Cole Strange injured his knee early in the second quarter and was taken off on a cart. 🏈 Chiefs snap 2-game skid with win over Patriots

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Rienk Mast and Juwan Gary finished with double-doubles to power Nebraska to a 62-46 victory over Kansas State on Sunday.

Mast sank 8 of 15 shots with three 3-pointers, scoring 19 with 12 rebounds for the Cornhuskers (9-2), who snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Wildcats (8-3) dating to when both were members of the Big 12 Conference. It was Mast's fourth double-double of the season. Gary totaled 13 points and a career-high 18 rebounds for his second double-double of the campaign.

Brice Williams contributed 10 points and nine rebounds for Nebraska. Keisei Tominaga hit three 3-pointers, scoring nine with five steals and four assists.

Cam Carter had 12 points to lead Kansas State, which saw a five-game win streak end. Tylor Perry pitched in with 11 points and six assists.

Perry hit three 3-pointers and scored nine, Carter added eight points and Kansas State took a 34-31 lead into halftime. The Wildcats led despite shooting just 34.3% overall and 22% from 3-point range (4 of 18). Mast hit all three of his shots from distance and scored 11 to keep Nebraska close. The Cornhuskers shot 35% overall but made 7 of 18 from distance (39%).

Nebraska opened the second half with an 11-4 run, capped by Gary's layup, for a 39-38 lead. The Cornhuskers' advantage grew to 52-41 on back-to-back baskets by Mast with 9:13 remaining in the game. K-State didn't top double figures in the second half until Perry made two free throws with 2:07 left. The Wildcats were outscored 31-12 after the break.

K-State saw a 15-game win streak against nonconference opponents at home come to an end. The Wildcats are 22-2 at home under second-year coach Jerome Tang.

🏀 Shooting woes hamper K-State in loss to Nebraska

WICHITA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team held Newman without a field goal in the first quarter and cruised to an 85-35 win over the Jets Sunday afternoon at Fugate Gymnasium.

It's the largest margin of victory in series history and the first time the Tigers outscored an opponent by at least 50 points since 2021 (89-38 vs. Bethel College, 12/20/21).

The Tigers (9-1, 4-1 MIAA) finished the game with 17 steals, their most in a game against an NCAA Division II opponent in nearly four years (17 steals vs. Missouri Southern, 1/4/20). The offense was just as efficient, hitting a season-best 10 three-pointers while shooting a&nbsp; on a season-high 43.5 percent shooting from behind the arc (10-of-23).

11 of the 12 Tigers to see the floor scored with nine players with five or more points. Katie Wagner&nbsp;led the way with 18 points, eight rebounds, three assists and six steals, while Emma Ruddle hit three 3-pointers and added 15 points on her brithday.

The Tigers led 18-4 after the first quarter. Newman (1-11, 0-6 MIAA) didn't hit their first field goal until nearly four minutes into the second quarter.&nbsp;A Ruddle 3-pointer pushed the Tiger lead as high as 23 late in the first half before Newman scored the final four points of the period, closing within 34-15 at the break.

Fort Hays State scored 25 points in the third quarter before totaling 26 in the fourth quarter to complete the victory. FHSU held Newman to just 20 points in the second half.

The Tigers collected outrebounded the Jets 55-26 and had 21 offensive rebounds which they turned into 30 second-chance points. 

Fort Hays State will wrap up the road trip Tuesday at Central Oklahoma at 5:30 p.m. before returning to Gross Memorial Coliseum after the holiday break to take on Bethany on December 30 beginning at 2 p.m.

🏀  No. 21 Tiger women cruise past Jets

INDIANAPOLIS - Fort Hays State men's wrestling junior&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/tereus-henry/7707">Tereus Henry</a>&nbsp;finished as the runner-up in the 197-pound bracket at the 44th Midwest Classic on Sunday (Dec. 17). Henry's placement helped the Tigers to 39.5 team points, good for 27th out of the 51 NCAA Division II opponents in attendance.

Henry reached the championship round at the Midwest Classic for a second year in a row after a 4-2 semifinal victory over Ben Tonnessen of Adams State. Henry picked up a quick escape in the second period after a scoreless opening period then added a two-point nearfall while racking up enough time on top for the riding time point in round three.

The El Paso, Texas native then faced top-seeded Derek Blubaugh of UIndy, the second-ranked wrestler in the country at 197 pounds. Henry again took a 1-0 lead after an early escape in the second period, but Blubaugh managed to tie things up with an escape 31 seconds into the third period. The score remained tied at the end of the seven minutes, sending the title bout to sudden victory where Blubaugh found the winning takedown 72 seconds into the extra time.

Henry finished the week 5-1 and is now 11-4 all-time with a pair of runner-up finishes at the Midwest Classic, the largest Division II men's wrestling event of the season.

The Tigers will return to action following the holiday break on January 5 when they travel to San Francisco for a pair of duals against Colorado School of Mines and San Francisco State.

Henry's placement helped the Tigers to 39.5 team points, good for 27th out of the 51 NCAA Division II opponents in attendance.Henry reached the championship round at the Midwest Classic for a second year in a row after a 4-2 semifinal victory over Ben Tonnessen of Adams State. Henry picked up a quick escape in the second period after a scoreless opening period then added a two-point nearfall while racking up enough time on top for the riding time point in round three.The El Paso, Texas native then faced top-seeded Derek Blubaugh of UIndy, the second-ranked wrestler in the country at 197 pounds. Henry again took a 1-0 lead after an early escape in the second period, but Blubaugh managed to tie things up with an escape 31 seconds into the third period. Fort Hays State Men's Basketball will play its final game before the mandatory holiday break when it takes on Newman University in Wichita on Sunday. Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m. inside of Fugate Gymnasium. The Tigers enter at 8-2 overall, 3-1 in the MIAA, while the Jets are 5-5 overall, 2-3 in the MIAA.

Fort Hays State is currently on a three-game win streak after three straight wins at home. The Tigers knocked off a pair of NABC Top 25 ranked teams, No. 17 Northwest Missouri State and No. 22 Missouri Western, to improve to 3-1 in MIAA play. They capped their three-game homestand with a win over Bethel College on Wednesday night. FHSU held the opposition to less than 50 points in all three of those games.

Newman is coming off a 90-72 win against Nebraska-Kearney on Friday evening to move back to .500 overall and one-under .500 in conference play. The Jets are 2-1 in conference games at home so far this year, also notching a win over Central Missouri in the first weekend of conference play. Their lone conference loss at home was to Lincoln.

Fort Hays State has a firm 45-10 lead in the all-time series with Newman. The Tigers are 8-0 since the Jets joined the MIAA in 2019-20, which constitutes all of their current 8-game win streak in the series. All four of the MIAA meetings between the teams in Wichita have been decided by 10 points or less. FHSU won last year's meeting in Wichita 71-62.

Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;(12.8), Elijah Nnanabu&nbsp;(11.0), and R.J. Crawford&nbsp;(10.2) all average double figures in scoring for the Tigers. Traejon Davis&nbsp;led the Tigers with a career-high 19 points in the win over Bethel on Wednesday night.
