Travis Kelce and Kadarius Toney had combined to make the play of the season to give the Kansas City Chiefs a late lead when the celebration quickly turned to silence.

An offside penalty on Toney negated the score.

Anytime there’s a big play in an NFL game, announcers are quick to point out whether a yellow flag has been thrown. Fans can’t get too excited until they hear on television or see in person that there’s no penalty on the play. Players often hesitate to celebrate.

The quality of officiating in the NFL is inconsistent. But that’s nothing new. It’s been that way for decades. Even with instant replay, plenty of calls are missed.

It seems every week there’s at least one blown call or non-call in an important spot that helps change the outcome of a game.

Fans whine. Players and coaches complain. The league sometimes admits mistakes and admonishes referees. Then, it happens again the following week and the week after that.

Overall, penalties are up this year but not by much. Entering Sunday night’s Eagles-Cowboys game, an average of 14.4 penalty flags were thrown per game. It was 13.1 last season.

The NFC East prime-time showdown started out like a flagfest with a national television audience watching. Officials threw eight flags in the first quarter and 17 total penalties were accepted in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/eagles-cowboys-score-prescott-hurts-831c770cb63939100241928dbbff7b76">Dallas’ 33-13 victory</a>&nbsp;over Philadelphia.

In Kansas City, the game-changing call wasn’t popular but it was accurate. Regardless, officiating is dominating headlines instead of the players' performance on the field.

With the Chiefs trailing the Buffalo Bills&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/buffalo-bills-kansas-city-chiefs-score-2d06e013bc05d875cc226072a0e470e5">20-17</a>&nbsp;and under two minutes left, Kelce caught a pass over the middle from Patrick Mahomes and then threw the ball backward across the field to Toney, who ran the final 25 yards to finish off the 49-yard backyard touchdown.

However, Toney had&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Leabonics/status/1734009202996129895?s=20">clearly lined up offside</a>. It’s a call officials rarely made before this season. There have been 13 offensive offside penalties in 2023, including a few against Philadelphia on the “tush push” play. There were only seven total in the previous three seasons combined.

The Chiefs hadn’t noticed that referees are calling offensive offside more frequently.

Mahomes was fuming on the sideline, screaming at officials and had to be held back. Even coach Andy Reid uncharacteristically pointed out his displeasure with the call unprovoked after the game.

“I never use any of this as excuses, but normally I get a warning before something like that happens in a big game,” Reid said. ”(It’s) a bit embarrassing in the National Football League for that to take place. ... Normally, yeah, if it’s even close you get a warning. The head coach gets a warning, I mean that normally — I don’t know, I didn’t have a protractor out there. But it’s a bit embarrassing.”

Referee Carl Cheffers said officials will give coaches alignment advice if they’re asked.

“But ultimately, they are responsible for wherever they line up,” Cheffers told a pool reporter. “And, certainly, no warning is required, especially if they are lined up so far offsides where they’re actually blocking our view of the ball. So, we would give them some sort of a warning if it was anywhere close, but this particular one is beyond a warning.”

Cheffers wasn’t sure if any warnings for offside were issued during the game but it didn’t matter in this case.

“If it’s egregious enough, it would be beyond a warning,” he said. “So really regardless of whether or not he was warned at other times during the day, if it was an egregious alignment to where he was over the ball — whether he had warnings or not — it would still be a foul.”

Last week, referees missed an obvious pass interference by the Packers against Chiefs wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling near the 5-yard line in the final minute of Green Bay’s 27-19 win.

“I know as fans you want to see the guys on the field decide the game and that’s why last week I didn’t say anything about the flag that didn’t get called on Marquez,” Mahomes said. “I mean, they’re human, they make mistakes but it’s every week we’re talking about something and all I can do is go out there and give everything I have. ... It’s just tough to swallow.”

It’s always tougher on the team that loses.

In this case, the call was right. Still, it's too bad the penalty stole the spotlight from Josh Allen,&nbsp;

🏈 Analysis: Officiating again stole the spotlight even though the call against the Chiefs was correct

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Josh Allen threw for 233 yards with touchdowns running and throwing, the Bills kicked a go-ahead field goal with 1:54 to go and, thanks to a crucial penalty on Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney, Buffalo held on to beat Kansas City 20-17 on Sunday.

The game was tied 17-all when the Bills (7-6) took over with about seven minutes left. They converted on three third downs, one courtesy of a penalty on Chiefs cornerback Jaylen Watson, before Tyler Bass kicked his 39-yarder for the lead.

But two pass plays that Buffalo called just before the two-minute warning — both incomplete — left time for the Chiefs (8-5) to work.

And moments later, they thought they'd taken the lead when Patrick Mahomes hit Travis Kelce over the middle, and the high school QB threw far across the field to Toney, who ran the rest of the 49 yards for a touchdown.

Only one problem: Toney had lined up offside. The penalty wiped out the play.

The Chiefs still had 1:12 left to get within range of big-legged kicker Harrison Butker, but Mahomes threw incomplete on his next two passes, and his fourth-and-15 throw across the middle of the field found nothing but grass.

James Cook had 58 yards rushing and caught five passes for 83 yards and a score for Buffalo, which finally proved it could win a close game. The Bills had been 2-6 in games decided by six points or fewer, including a pair of overtime losses, and they had lost a lead in the final two minutes in three of their losses.

Mahomes finished with 271 yards passing and a touchdown with an interception, though he was pressured all day by a healthy Buffalo pass rush. Rashee Rice had seven catches for 72 yards and the score.

It was the fourth loss in six games for the Chiefs, whose chances of the No. 1 seed in the AFC are quickly slipping away.

The Chiefs continued a recent track record of lousy starts. Mahomes was intercepted by A.J. Epenesa on their first series, they punted on each of their next three, and it wasn't until the closing minutes of the first half that Kansas City was able to sustain a drive that ended with Jerick McKinnon's touchdown run.

By that point, the Bills had already reached the end zone twice.

The first touchdown came when Cook was unchecked coming out of the backfield, caught a flick from Allen and breezed 25 yards for the score. The second came at the end of a 73-yard drive, when Allen kept the ball over the right side and was stood up at the Kansas City 4, only for the entire Bills offense to gather behind him and shove into the end zone.

If the Eagles have the “tush push,” the Bills offered their “team trample.”

Buffalo added a field goal out of halftime, but momentum quickly tilted Kansas City's way. Mahomes led a nine-play, 75-yard march that ended with Rice's touchdown catch, then their defense forced back-to-back punts, before another drive ended with Butker's tying field goal with 11 1/2 minutes to go.

Buffalo lost Epenesa in the first quarter, shortly after he had batted a pass into the air and picked it off. ... FS Micah Hyde left late in the first half with a stinger. He was replaced by Taylor Rapp in the second half.

Kansas City RB Isiah Pacheco (shoulder), LT Donovan Smith (neck) and LB Drue Tranquill (concussion) were inactive.

Kansas City visits New England next Sunday.

(AP) — Russell Wilson threw two touchdown passes and the Denver Broncos beat the Chargers 24-7 Sunday after Los Angeles lost quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chargers-herbert-bfde1cb37a610215c2990090c818d328">Justin Herbert due to broken finger</a>&nbsp;in the first half.

Wilson completed 21 of 33 for 224 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown to Courtland Sutton in the third quarter for Denver (7-6), which has won six of its last seven.

It was the Broncos' first road victory against an AFC West foe since beating the Chargers on Oct. 6, 2019.

Herbert has a fracture in his right index finger, coach Brandon Staley said. The Chargers will do more tests before determining how long Herbert will be out. It is a short week for the Bolts, who are at Las Vegas on Thursday night.

He had a fracture on the middle finger of his left non-throwing hand earlier this season.

Herbert was 9 of 17 for 96 yards with an interception before being injured, apparently while he was taken down awkwardly by Denver’s Zach Allen after throwing a pass. Herbert had been sacked four times and hit six times during the Chargers’ first six possessions, with his teammates repeatedly missing their blocks against Denver’s pass rushers.

Easton Stick completed 13 of 24 passes for 179 yards in Herbert's place. He had played two NFL snaps in five seasons with Los Angeles before replacing the Bolts’ franchise quarterback with 1:52 remaining in the second quarter. His best throw was a 57-yard strike to Quentin Johnston during the fourth quarter. Four plays later, Austin Ekeler put Los Angeles on the board with a 4-yard TD.

Javonte Williams and Adam Trautman also scored for the Broncos. Denver's defense forced six sacks and a pair of turnovers.

The Chargers (5-8) have dropped four of five.

Denver had a 10-0 halftime lead and extended it with less than six minutes remaining in the third quarter on Wilson's connection to Sutton. On first-and-10 from the Chargers 46, Wilson had plenty of time before stepping up in the pocket and throwing a deep pass. Sutton made a one-handed catch near the back of the end zone while being covered by Michael Davis.

Denver took a 7-0 lead with five minutes remaining in the first quarter on Javonte Williams' 3-yard run up the middle. The touchdown was set up when linebacker Jonathon Cooper picked off Herbert at the LA 7 after Herbert's passes was batted at the line of scrimmage by Baron Browning.

The Chargers also had a red zone interception earlier in the first quarter but could not convert it into points. Davis made a diving pick on a pass intended for Marvin Mims Jr. at the Denver 13.

Los Angeles had fourth-and-3 at the Denver 6, but Gerald Everett couldn't catch Herbert's pass in the end zone.

Broncos: RG Quinn Meinerz left the game due to an elevated heart rate at halftime. ... LB Nik Bonitto had a knee injury in the first half.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson had 13 points and 16 rebounds, Kevin McCullar Jr. and KJ Adams had 17 points each and No. 2 Kansas beat rival Missouri 73-64 on Saturday.

The Jayhawks closed out the first half on a 14-0 run started by a Elmarko Jackson's 3-pointer to turn a 2-point deficit into a 41-29 halftime lead.

“They were better than us to start the game, but that run was the difference in the game,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. "We made a lot of good basketball plays in the last six minutes of the first half.”

McCullar Jr. had 14 points and six rebounds in the first half.

Sean East II led Missouri with 21 points and Nick Honor scored 17, but the Tigers were without one of their guards, Caleb Grill. Grill injured his non-shooting wrist last Sunday and is expected to miss 5-7 weeks. He averages 8.4 points and nearly six rebounds per game.

“We were creating for one another and we just wanted to use the ball screens effectively and I thought we did that well," Honor said. "We’ve got to learn how to play for the full 40 minutes.”

Missouri kept it close in the second half outscoring Kansas 35-32, but it wasn’t enough to pull off an upset of their border foe and former Big 12 rival.

“I thought our guys played an unbelievable first half other than the last five of the first half and first five of the second half,” Missouri coach Dennis Gates said. "We had an excellent game plan but weren’t able to put a full 40 minutes together. I thought our guys grew up a little bit today. I think we had multiple guys make big plays.”

Kansas dominated in the paint scoring 42 points down low, but were careless with the ball and committed 16 turnovers, which kept Missouri in the game in the first half.

“The food tastes better and the drinks are colder the night that we beat Missouri," Self said. "I’m leaving out of here really happy that we won, but also that we have got to play better.”

The Jayhawks, who improved to 9-1, shot 25 of 56 while Missouri went 24 for 58 from the floor and fell to 7-3.

Prior to the game, Thomas Robinson had his No. 0 jersey retired. He led the Jayhawks to the NCAA title game in 2012 and was named a Consensus All-America First Team that same year.

Missouri: After jumping out a quick lead, they went cold to end the first half and never bounced back.

Kansas: Had a slow start, but their defense locked down in the final few minutes of the first half and never looked back after that. They have their first true road game in their next contest.

Kansas: Travels to Indiana next Saturday.

HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State used suffocating defense to pick up their second straight home win over a nationally ranked opponent, beating Missouri Western State 73-49 Saturday afternoon at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

The Tigers (7-2, 3-1 MIAA) used an early 24-4 run to build a 22-point lead just over 15 minutes into the game. They held the Griffons (7-2, 2-2 MIAA) without a field goal for almost 13 1/2 minutes in the first half and led 35-16 at halftime. FHSU opened the second half with a 15-2 run to go up 47-18 and lead by as many as 31 twice in the second half.

Elijah Nnanabu matched his season-high with 17 points. He also tied for the team lead with seven rebounds and had a career-high seven steals and tied for the team lead with three assists. Shaun Riley added 15 points, R.J. Crawford scored&nbsp;12.

JaRon Thames was the only Griffon to reach double figures with 11 points.

The Tigers held the Griffons to 32-percent shooting, 20.8 percent in the first half. The Tigers hit on 47.4-percent of their shots. The Tigers forced the Griffons into 19 turnovers while committing only seven of their own and finished the game with 14 steals. The Tigers improved their nation's best scoring defense to 55.6 points per game with the result.

The Tigers will wrap up their non-conference play on Wednesday night when they play host to Bethel College at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

🏀 Tiger men dominant in win over No. 22 Missouri Western State

The Fort Hays State University Track and Field team showcased their muscles in three recent meets, leaving a lasting impression with impressive performances and several provisional marks.

The men's team brought their A-game to the UNK Pre-Holiday Classic, with standout performances across various events. In the 60m Dash,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/eddie-mcvay/7868">Eddie McVay</a>&nbsp;secured a second place finish with a swift time of 6.97 seconds.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/dayton-williams/7879">Dayton Williams</a>&nbsp;dominated the High Jump, claiming second place with a height of 6-7.75, earning a provisional ranking. The Long Jump saw&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/dean-clark/7898">Dean Clark</a>&nbsp;emerge victorious with a mark of 23-3.5, earning a provisional spot as well. 🏃‍♀️ FHSU shines in three meets, secures array of provisional marks

HAYS, Kan. - Katie Wagner and Olivia Hollenbeck both recorded double-doubles but it wasn't enough as the 18th-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball lost their first game of the season 61-58 to Missouri Western State Saturday afternoon at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

The Tigers (7-1, 3-1 MIAA) held the lead for most of the first half and led 17-15 after the first quarter then held the Griffons (6-3, 2-2 MIAA) to nine points in the second quarter, stretching their lead to 11 before the MWSU scored the final four points to pull within 31-24 at the break.

The Griffons opened the third quarter on a 10-2 run to take the lead and held a 44-43 after three quarters. They hit three 3-pointers and and conventional 3-point play to go up seven with 2:42 to play.

A Sydney Golladay jumper, a layup from Katie Wagner and three free throws from Ellie Stearns pulled the Tigers to within one with 12 seconds to play. The Griffons would hit two free throws then Megan Earney missed on a three to end the game which seven lead changes.

Missouri Western outscored Fort Hays State by 10 in the second half and made five second half threes.

Wagner finished the game with 28 points and 14 rebounds while Hollenbeck added 10 points and 11 rebounds. Stearns scored seven and grabbed six rebounds.

Fort Hays State will return to action on Monday, December 11 in makeup game against Tabor College. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.&nbsp;&nbsp;

🏀 No. 18 FHSU women suffer first loss of the season

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Cam Carter scored 21 points, 19 in the first half, and Arthur Kaluma added a double-double, leading Kansas State to a 75-60 victory over LSU on Saturday.

LSU outshot Kansas State 59%-52% in the first half but trailed 42-34 at the break. Tylor Perry and Kaluma opened the second half with 3-pointers for K-State to keep the pressure on LSU. Later, an 8-0 run by the Wildcats pushed the lead to 56-39 near the 14-minute mark.

LSU fought back and an 11-0 run got the Tigers within three points near the 10-minute mark. At that point, the teams that shot better than 50% in the first half both went ice cold. In the next eight minutes, K-State made three baskets and LSU one, leaving the Wildcats with a 67-57 lead with two minutes to go. K-State outscored LSU 13-3 over those final two minutes, including the final six points of the game.

Kaluma had 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats (8-2). Perry had 14 points and six assists, and Will McNair Jr. scored 13 points. Carter had eight rebounds.

Jordan Wright scored 19 points and Jalen Reed added 12 for LSU (5-4).

The game was LSU's first nonconference homecourt matchup against a Power Six team since December 2015. Earlier this season, the Tigers played at Syracuse and vs. Wake Forest at a neutral site.

This was the Wildcats' first true road game of the season (they've played three games at neutral sites).

K-State and LSU will play in Manhattan, Kansas, next season.

Meanwhile, LSU hosts Alabama State on Wednesday and Kansas State will host Nebraska on Sunday.

Fort Hays State Men's Basketball will face a second-consecutive NABC ranked opponent on Saturday when it hosts Missouri Western at 4 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers enter at 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the MIAA, while the Griffons are 7-1 overall and also 2-1 in the MIAA. Missouri Western is currently ranked No. 22 in the NABC Top 25.

The Tigers are coming off a 57-49 win over No. 17 ranked Northwest Missouri State on Thursday night. The victory snapped a long 16-game losing streak to the Bearcats that dated back to the 2012-13 season. The result also snapped a six-game string of losses to NABC ranked opponents inside of Gross Memorial Coliseum.

The Griffons are coming off their first loss of the season, a 93-90 loss at Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday night. UNK broke a tie at the buzzer by hitting a half-court shot. Missouri Western is 4-1 this season in games decided by four or less points.

Fort Hays State and Missouri Western are currently in a five-way tie for third in the MIAA standings. Only two teams remain unbeaten in MIAA play, which includes Central Oklahoma (3-0) and Emporia State (2-0).

Fort Hays State leads the all-time series with Missouri Western 37-19. The Tigers and Griffons split their regular season series in 2022-23 with the Griffons taking a seven-point win at home before the Tigers claimed a 27-point win in Hays. Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;averaged 20.5 points in the two meetings last year, while Elijah Nnanabu&nbsp;scored 15 in both contests. JaRon Thames led the Griffons in scoring in both meetings, averaging 14.0 points.

Hammeke continues to lead the Tigers in scoring this season at 14.5 points per game. Nnanabu adds 11.1 per game, while R.J. Crawford&nbsp;averages 10.9 per game. Crawford led the Tigers in scoring in the win over Northwest Missouri State on Thursday night with 16 points. Shaun Riley&nbsp;(5.4) and Traejon Davis&nbsp;(5.3) head the Tigers in rebounds per game, while Hammeke dishes out an average of 3.8 assists per game.

Thames is the top scorer for the Griffons so far this season at 16.9 points per game. Julius Dixon (14.6), Zion Swader (12.6) and Taye Fields (11.6) also average double figures for MWSU. Fields is the top rebounder at 9.6 per game and ranks second in the MIAA.

The Tigers (7-0, 3-0 MIAA) are coming off a 62-48 home win over previously undefeated Northwest Missouri State Thursday night. The Tigers trailed at halftime for the first time this season but opened the third quarter on a 17-2 run and outscored the Bearcats 37-20 in the second half.

Fort Hays State's seven wins to start the season is tied for the fourth-best start in program history. 

Gross Memorial Coliseum is celebrating its 50th anniversary season this year. The Tigers are 558-138 inside GMC.

The Tigers are 34-25 all-time against the Griffons, including a nine-point Tiger victory in last year's MIAA Championship Quarterfinals (3/3/23). Fort Hays State is 21-7 at home against the Griffons, but MWSU has won each of the last two games in Hays by a combined two points, including a one-point win in the 2022 regional finals and a one-point, double-overtime win last January.

They also do a good job limiting turnovers on the other end, ranking second in the league and 18th nationally with just 13.0 turnovers per contest.
