⚾ Big 4th inning powers Tigers past Griffons in series opener

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State scored nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and powered their way to a 14-1 run-rule win over Missouri Western State in game one of the their three-game MIAA series Friday afternoon at Larks Park. The Tigers improved to 9-4 overall and 4-0 in the MIAA while the Griffons dropped to 1-11 and 0-4 in conference play.

MWSU grabbed the lead on a Frank Gall solo homer in the the third.

It took Tigers a bit to solve Griffon starter Lynden Bruegman, but finally broke through in a big way in the fourth following a Missouri Western error that led a big two-out rally. FHSU generated nine straight hits following the error and plated nine runs. Tytin Goebel tied the game with an RBI single, then Cesar Saavedra put the Tigers on top with an RBI double. Tony Moore and Isaiah Ural each recorded RBI singles to make it 4-1. After a pitching change, Elliott Herrmann smacked a two-run double, Derek Woolwine followed with a single, and then Trey DeGarmo launched a 3-run homer to make it 9-1.

The Tigers added a run in the sixth on a Herrmann solo homer. In the seventh, a pair of singles and a hit batter set up a walk-off grand slam by Ural to end the game by run rule.

Ty Riley  (4-0) struck out nine and allowed only two hits in the complete game victory.

Ural finished had a team-best five RBIs while DeGarmo and Herrmann each drove in three. Six Tigers had two hits in the game.
