Kristina Lea Halfacre, 46, passed away on February 18, 2020, at her 
home in Great Bend. She was born on June 9, 1973, at Grand Rapids, Mich.
 to Ronald &amp; Shirley (Ondersma) Vanderband.

Coming from Michigan just 2 weeks ago, Kristina resided in Great Bend currently. She was a caretaker and loved crosswords. 

Survivors include, two sons, Jonathan Vegter of Grant, Mich. And 
Micah Halfacre of Grand Rapids, Mich.; two daughters, Andrea Jenkins and
 husband David of Great Bend, and Samantha Vegter of Mich.; her father, 
Ronald Vanderband of Mich.; her mother, Shirley Ondersma of Mich.; two 
brothers, Rick Vanderforest of Batavia, Ill., and Ronald Vanderband, Jr.
 of Aurora, Ill.; a sister, Sheryl Vanderband of Jenison, Mich.; and a

Michael Allan Rogers, 72, of Russell, Kansas, and former Aurora, Colorado, resident died on Sunday, February 16, 2020, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Mike was born on September 11, 1947, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of James E. and Margaret R. (Orr) Rogers.  Mike grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and graduated from Regis Catholic High School in 1965.  In 1967 he joined the United States Army, serving in Vietnam and Germany until 1970. 

 Following his service in the Army he attended Mankato State University where he met, fell in love with and was united in marriage to Christine Cimprich on June 10, 1972, at St. Matthews Church in Cedar Rapids, IA.  Mike graduated from Mankato State University, Minnesota in 1973 with a degree in Business Administration.  Upon completion of college, Mike worked in sales for several different companies in Minnesota, Iowa and Colorado.  After moving to Colorado, he and Christine were blessed with two children, Nicholas and Adrienne. 

 In 1984, Mike became the owner and operator of Teleconnect, which was a telephone installation and repair service.  Mike also helped found a Colorado chapter of S.K.I.P. (Sick Kids (need) Involved People) to advocate for families with seriously ill children to stay at home instead of at hospitals or institutions.  He and Christine lived in Aurora, Colorado, for 30 years before moving to Russell, Kansas, in January 2015.  He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans of Hays and the U.S.G.A.  He enjoyed woodworking and wood carving, golfing, cooking and enjoyed hunting and fishing as a young man. 

Surviving family include his wife Christine of the home; son Nicholas Rogers in Victoria, Kansas, daughter Adrienne Rogers in Hoisington, Kansas, brother Patrick Rogers with wife Molly in Mankato, Minnesota, nephew Jason Rogers with wife Shelly in Victoria, Minnesota, nephew Mike Rogers with wife Sara in Kanosh, Utah, sister in law Debbie Griswold with husband Brad in Fallbrook, California, nephew Jordan Rogers in Bonsall, California and niece Rebecca Gillman with husband Josh in Chula Vista, California.  He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Thomas Rogers.

A gathering celebration of Michael's life will be held on Monday, February 24, 2020, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas with the family greeting guests from 5 P.M to 7 P.M.  Cremation has been selected by the family.  Internment of remains is planned for a later date in the WaKeeney Veterans Cemetery. 

 In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to Hays Medical Center Hospice.  Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary who is in charge of these arrangements.

Duane D. (Swede) Leak was born June 1, 1927 and died Feb. 17, 2020 at the age of 92. If you believe that life should be lived as if you are creating a masterpiece painting, his was created with mostly broad and bold brush strokes and filled in with loving detail. His gift for storytelling served him well for sharing that masterpiece with family and friends throughout the years.

Duane’s early years were spent in Mingo and Colby and his stories of life in those ‘early’ days have entertained his children, grandchildren and friends for decades. He left Colby in his late teens to move to Montana where he spent several happy and hardworking years working with his aunt and uncle on their farm operation along the Teton River, giving him another reservoir from which to draw stories for years to come.

At the age of 19 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and spent his service years in Japan during the post WWII occupation working on railroad security during the rebuild of that war-torn country. Upon his return from serving his country, he married the love of his life, Dolores Price, in July 1952 and they shared 67 loving years of marriage together. To this union was born three children: Denny Lynn in 1953; DeAnn Kay in 1957 and Dalaina Sue in 1962.

Duane continued to ‘paint his masterpiece’ through his work in those years. He was employed as a delivery driver and salesman for Careful Cleaners and then the Northwest Kansas Coors Distributorships for several years. During that time, he met and created friendships with many people across the Tri-State area.

He then sold corn and milo seed for several companies, including Funks and Weathermaster, while owning and operating Swede’s Hamburger Inn in Colby. Those years were busy and full and often entertaining as he developed a large and loyal following for his cold beer, awesome chili and cheeseburgers and very homestyle brand of bartender wisdom.

He closed HBI in 1981 and took on another challenge as he accepted a position with Jacques Seed Company as their district sales manager for northwest Kansas. This job truly brought all his skills of getting to know people and helping them make good decisions with their farming practices into focus and he thrived in that sales environment for many years before retiring at the age of 65. Through all his years of work experience his driving force was that he truly enjoyed meeting and getting to know people.

Duane and Dolores enjoyed a long and wonderful retirement with several enjoyable trips early on and many beautiful memories made with family and friends at their “Summer Haven” cabin outside Bailey, Colo. He was also able to spend countless hours in his woodshop working on projects of all shapes and sizes. During his lifetime he was also an enthusiastic member and supporter of the Colby Volunteer Fire Department, the American Legion and the VFW.

Duane is survived by his wife Dolores; children Denny and wife Karen of Wrangell, Alaska; DeAnn and husband Jim Deibert of Colby; Dalaina and husband Shawn Alsup of Sterling, Colo.; as well as numerous grandchildren, step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom he treasured greatly.

Duane was one of those truly treasured people we get to meet in life who show us all how to ‘paint our world’ with bold strokes while filling in the spaces in between with love and wisdom worth listening for. He will be lovingly missed, with a smile, by all who knew him.

A memorial service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, 2020 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Colby, with inurnment in Beulah Cemetery, Colby.

COLBY—William “Bill” Henry Frerichs, 92, of Colby, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2020 at Colby Health and Rehab.

He was born July 6, 1927, in Goodland,to Heye Frerichs and Mary (Walker) Frerichs-Bolen.

Bill served in the United States Marines and was a member of the Colby American Legion. In his early life Bill went to work for the railroad, working there until his retirement.

Bill loved baseball and had played on a semi-pro team in Goodland. Later he went on coach baseball in Colby and coached kids boxing through Golden Glove in Goodland.

Bill enjoyed tending to his chickens, goats and sheep and was a member of several goat and dog associations. Bill was good at woodworking and liked to restore furniture. He also grew huge gardens and supplied the whole neighborhood with his produce. Bill was a member of the NRA and in his free time enjoyed rodeo and hunting with his grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Thelma; son William Robert; sister Dorothy Shaw and great-grandson Brock William Frerichs.

He is survived by his son Richard (LaDona) Frerichs of Goodland; daughter-in-law Linda Frerichs of Savannah, Ill.; companion Twona Brungardt of Grinnell; sister Jean Russell of Goodland; grandchildren, Bret (Jennifer) Frerichs, Brian (Kelli) Frerichs and Malissa Sloan; step-granddaughter Kara Ullrich and great-grandchildren, Brady Frerichs, Brendan Frerichs, Jett Sloan, Lucas Frerichs and Katelyn Frerichs.

Virgil C. Dechant, the past supreme knight of the Knights of 
Columbus, the world’s largest fraternal service organization, died 
Sunday, February 16, 2020, at his home in Leawood, Kansas. He was 89. 



A native Kansan, Dechant and his family moved to Connecticut in 1967 so 
he could work for the Knights of Columbus full-time at its New Haven 
headquarters. He was soon appointed supreme secretary, and in January 
1977 he was elected supreme knight, succeeding Dr. John W. McDevitt. 



It was a post he would hold until 2000, making him the longest-tenured supreme knight in the Order’s 138-year history. 



During his two-plus decades of leadership, the Knights of Columbus 
achieved unprecedented success: the Order added more than 5,000 
councils, membership rose to more than 1.6 million, and the Knights’ 
assets grew by more than 1,000 percent. 



Known by colleagues as a hands-on executive, Dechant acquired his 
business savvy on the plains of Kansas, where he began a business career
 as a farmer and automotive and implement dealer following graduation 
from the St. Joseph Military Academy in Hays, KS, known today as Thomas 
More Prep-Marian High School. Also in Kansas, Dechant met and married 
the former Ann Schafer, who had been raised on a family farm. 



Widely regarded as one of the world’s most influential Catholic lay 
leaders, Dechant focused his Knights of Columbus administration on 
family life, Catholic education, religious vocations, and assistance to 
the Holy See. His vision was for the Knights to assist the church 
quietly in its efforts to evangelize. 



Among numerous honors, Dechant held 16 honorary degrees and was named a 
Knight of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, a Knight of St. Gregory
 the Great, a Knight Grand Cross in the Equestrian Order of the Holy 
Sepulchre, and a Knight Grand Cross in the Order of Pius IX, the highest
 honor granted to a Catholic layman who is not a head of state. At the 
time of his death, Dechant was serving as a Consiglieri to the Vatican 
City State. 



Dechant helped strengthen the Order’s close ties to the papacy. He and 
his family were received in private audience by Saint John Paul II just 
three days after his 1978 election as pope, the first of what would be 
more than 70 personal encounters between the two men over the next 
two-and-a-half decades. Among many projects for the Holy See, the 
Knights of Columbus in 1985 underwrote the restoration of the façade and
 statuary of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. 



The pontiff and other church leaders admired Dechant for his dependability, dignity, and discretion. and discretion. 



Dechant served as a Gentiluomo, or “gentleman of His Holiness,” during 
Saint John Paul II’s 2005 funeral at St. Peter’s Basilica, where he 
escorted U.S. President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura to the 
service. In 2012, Dechant received the Gaudium et Spes Award, the 
highest honor bestowed by the Knights of Columbus, awarded only in 
special circumstances to individuals of exceptional merit. Dechant 
joined a list of past recipients that included Saint Mother Teresa of 
Calcutta and Cardinal John O’Connor, among others. 



Dechant was preceded in death by his father Cornel, his mother Ursula, 
brothers Emerald, Harry, LaVerne, and Donald; and sisters Bernice, Mary 
Ann, Delores, Rosie, Carol, and Jeanette. He is survived by Ann, his 
wife of 68 years; their four children: Tom (Maggie) of La Crosse, KS; 
Dan of Lampe, MO; Karen (Bob Thompson) of Leawood, KS; and Bob (Gina) of
 Ashburn, VA; 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Other 
survivors include his sister Peggy Norris, brother-in-law Francis 
Haberman, and sisters-in-law Lucy Dechant, Leola Gottschalk, and Karen 
Depperschmidt. 



A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Church of the Nativity 
in Leawood, KS on Saturday, February 22, at 11 a.m. The visitation will 
be held at Church of the Nativity Friday, February 21, from 5-8 p.m. A 
rosary is planned for 5 p.m. 



A memorial Mass is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael Church in La 
Crosse, KS on Monday, February 24, followed by interment at the La 
Crosse Catholic cemetery. A visitation is planned in the hour preceding 
the memorial in La Crosse.

Marjie Crook, 104, died on Monday, February 17, 2020 at Garden Valley 
Retirement Village in Garden City.  She was born on August 13, 1915 in 
Rush County the daughter of John “Parm” Palmer &amp; Betty (Mosher) 
Renner.  She married Gerold Crook on February 16, 1935 at Larned.  He 
died on June 9, 1976.  


Marjie was raised on a farm in Rush County and graduated from La Crosse 
High School.   She lived in Larned after her marriage until moving to 
Garden City in 1939.  She worked at Dillon’s for 26 years in the meat 
department.  She was an avid quilter and enjoyed crossword puzzles.  


She was preceded in death by her Parents, Husband, Son- Jay Crook, 
Daughter- Mary Lou Jackson, Daughter-In-Law- Carole Crook, 
Great-Grandson- Damien Huelskamp, 3 Sisters and 2 Brothers.


She is survived by her Son- Ron Crook of Garden City, 2 Daughters-  
Vivian (Sy) Huelskamp of Minneola and Rhonda (Randy) Magnison of Holton,
 Daughter-In-Law- Sondra Crook of Prairie Village, 11 Grandchildren-

for 30+ years.  She was a homemaker.

Detlefson (David Jeakins, Gypsum, Kansas; two grandchildren, Desara

	Ginger Pfeifer was born September 15, 1935 to Raymond and Eleanor 
(Ubert) Ross in Hays, Kansas. She attended a country school in Hyacinth 
before moving to Hays where she graduated from Girls Catholic High 
School while working at the local drugstore.


She met and fell in love with a country neighbor, Red Pfeifer. On 
November 24, 1953, they were wed at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church
 in Hyacinth. They started their family in Plainville, Kansas where 
Steve and Debby were born. In 1958 they moved to Hill City where they 
have made their home ever since. It was here that Shelly and Renee were 
added to the family. (And, no, Renee . . . you were not found under a 
rock) 


Ginger enjoyed so many activities over the years including playing 
fast-pitch softball, tennis, darts, bowling, Garden Club, singing in the
 church choir and rock hunting with friends for her beautiful rock 
gardens. She loved her girl trips, happy hours, oil painting and 
camping. She had a green thumb and made her mark at The Unicorn where 
she became an amazing floral designer and manager.


Mom was such a special lady and always loved her turquoise jewelry, 
Southwest art and the Kansas City Chiefs. She got to see them win the 
super bowl! She enjoyed listening to all kinds of music, and there was 
rarely a night that she wouldn't stack record albums on the turntable as
 our household fell asleep.  Family time, having everyone happy, being 
where the action was, and cooking for us brought her so much joy. Mom 
was the strongest and most unselfish person and instilled a deep faith 
in us. We are forever grateful for the example she set.	


Ginger was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her 
husband Red, Hill City; brother James Ross (Melva, Morland; Children: 
Steve (Jeanie) Pfeifer, Pratt, Debby (Don) Keller, Hutchinson, Shelly

Amy Lynn Pyle Briggs, 40, of rural Gove County, died after a brief illness on February 13, 2020, at Gove County Medical Center in Quinter, Kansas.

 Amy was born to Mike and Avis Pyle on September 10, 1979, in Kansas City, Missouri, a mere 45 minutes after her parents arrived at the hospital. As Avis noted, “she was always in a hurry, even to her own birth.” Born the third of four children, Amy shared close, loving relationships with her siblings not least because she always had to share a bedroom with one of them. Amy possessed a creative flair that ranged from making Christmas ornaments for friends to painting an entire Christmas village in which she dedicated a building to each member of her family. A determined student and gifted writer, Amy pursued her goal of becoming a journalist, going so far as to skip class in high school to attend a lecture given by one of her heroes, Walter Cronkite, with whom she got her picture taken. Amy read widely and voraciously, a habit that ensured she always carried a book in her purse.&nbsp;

Amy graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Journalism from Kansas State University in December 2001, and a Bachelor of Arts in Education cum laude from Fort Hays State University in December 2003. Amy was the beloved wife of Bart, 43, and fiercely devoted mother to Addie, 17, Anna, 15, and Amelia, 10. She embraced rural life and making a warm, loving home for her family on their farm in Gove County, where she raised chickens, produce, and baked goods from the farm’s wheat. Sewing, quilting, scrapbooking and gardening kept her creative knack flourishing.&nbsp;

In addition to her husband, daughters, and parents, Amy is survived by her sister, Dawn (Jesse) Pacheco; brother, Robert (Marissa) Pyle; brother, Jason (Erin) Pyle; and 11 cherished nieces and nephews.

Amy’s family was not the only beneficiary of her many gifts: She shared her passion for rural living with her community as well. Amy was a Master Gardener, having completed Kansas State University Research and Extension’s Master Gardener Program. She spearheaded the revitalization of downtown Quinter through her work as chair of the Farmer’s Market, the creation of the Community Garden, which donated produce to the local food pantry, and her renovation of downtown buildings into usable retail space. Through her work for the Quinter Historical Society, she raised funds and wrote grants in the hopes of moving the historic Quinter Depot to the north side of the Community Garden on Main Street. Additionally, she worked with her local Farm Bureau to create agricultural tours and educational opportunities for local elementary students. She was vice president of the Quinter Chamber of Commerce as well as Gove County’s Food Policy Chair. Amy taught vacation bible school at Gove Community Bible Church for ten years.&nbsp;

While an exhaustive list of all her accomplishments and contributions is too long to enumerate here, her family takes solace in the fact she knew that the secret to having it all was knowing she already did.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, February 19, 2020, at Schmitt Funeral Home, Quinter. Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, February 20, 2020, in the Quinter High School gymnasium.

Amy was born to Mike and Avis Pyle on September 10, 1979, in Kansas City, Missouri, a mere 45 minutes after her parents arrived at the hospital. As Avis noted, “she was always in a hurry, even to her own birth.” Born the third of four children, Amy shared close, loving relationships with her siblings not least because she always had to share a bedroom with one of them. Amy possessed a creative flair that ranged from making Christmas ornaments for friends to painting an entire Christmas village in which she dedicated a building to each member of her family. A determined student and gifted writer, Amy pursued her goal of becoming a journalist, going so far as to skip class in high school to attend a lecture given by one of her heroes, Walter Cronkite, with whom she got her picture taken. Clifford Lee Atkerson, 66, of Russell, Kansas, died on Sunday, February 16, 2020, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Cliff was born on April 21, 1953, in Hoisington, Kansas, the son of Paris Leon and Mary Ann (Sparks) Atkerson.  Cliff grew up in Russell, Kansas, and graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1971.  He attended 2 years at the Salina Area Vocational School for auto mechanics.  He was married to Rita Dumler in 1973, and from this union they were blessed with 3 children Cristy Craig and Cindy.  Later, he and Rita were divorced.  He worked with his father and became the owner and operator of Leon's Tank Service.  He was a member of the Russell Masonic Blue Lodge, York Rite, Scottish Rite and a Shrine.  He loved working with the Shrine during ceremonial and shrine circus.  He enjoyed trap shooting and sporting clays with family and friends.  He also enjoyed going to local race tracks and helping out with his jeep.  He was also an avid gun, lego and hat collector.  Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and grandchildren.

Surviving family include his daughter Cristy Dinkel and husband Larry, son Craig Atkerson and wife Janae and grandchildren Rylee and Reanna Atkerson all of Hays, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Cindy R. Atkerson and sister Lee Anne Emmons.

A celebration of Cliff's life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, February 21, 2020, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas.  A Masonic service will be performed at the mortuary the day of service.  Burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery.  Visitation will be 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Thursday, February 20, 2020, at the mortuary with family present to greet guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Thursday evening.

Richard Dale Moore, 85, passed away February 16, 2020 at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

He was born September 27, 1934 in Larned; the son of Clarence Dove 
and Anna Heaton Moore.&nbsp; A lifetime area resident; he worked in Security 
at the Larned State Hospital.

He was of the Christian faith.&nbsp; He enjoyed being part of the Senior 
Companion program, playing cards and taking part in activities at the 
Senior Center in Rush Center, studying Genealogy and enjoyed animals.

On May 26, 1955 he married Doris Jean Stout.&nbsp; She passed away August 15, 2010.

Terri Ann Arnberger, 62, of Colby, died Sunday, February 16, 2020, at 
Hays Medical Center. She was born February 12, 1958, in Hays, KS, to 
Duane and Lois Jean (Ekberg) Dawes. Terri attended Brewster schools, 
graduating in 1976. On July 22, 1978, Terri married Rod Arnberger, in 
Colby. Terri had worked at Farmers and Merchants Bank for 5 years, then 
ran her own daycare before going to work for the US Postal Service. She 
worked at the Post Office for over 20 years. Terri was a member of the 
Levant Community Church and Eastern Star. She had served on the Brewster
 School Board, the Election Board and taught Sunday School for over 30 
years. In her free time, Terri enjoyed fishing, mowing and watching 
sports, particularly college basketball, cheering on the KU Jayhawks.


She was preceded in death by her parents.


Terri is survived by her husband Rod; children Lindsey (Jason) Hess and 
Brett (Ashley) Arnberger; grandson Ruxin Dawes Arnberger; brother Mike 
(Teresa) Dawes and nieces, Lacey and Katie Dawes.

Terri Ann Arnberger (Dawes

Don was a wonderful son, brother, husband, and father. He brought joy
 and laughter to everyone who shared his company. United in marriage to 
Sheila (Spatz-Robben) they were blessed with forty years of marriage and
 two beautiful sons. They were married on April 7th, 1979.

Born June 5th, 1947, at St. Rose Hospital in Great Bend, 
Kansas, to David &amp; Elvina (Michaelis) Hein. He was a lifetime 
resident of Hoisington and Hoisington High School graduate in 1965. Don 
became a licensed Cosmetologist and was co-owner with his brother of 
Hair Fashions Salon in Hoisington. After selling the salon he worked at 
Falcon Coach Company, followed by the Ruskin Manufacturing Company, 
Fuller Brush, and Superior Essex from which he retired in June of 2012.

He was a former member of Kiwanis Club &amp; Hoisington Jaycees. He 
was awarded the Outstanding Men of America in 1974 by the Hoisington 
Jaycees. Don was a former member of the Lake Barton Board of Directors. 
He was a former member of Hoisington Lutheran Hospital Board of 
Directors. He was a lifetime member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in 
Hoisington. He served several times on the Church Congregational 
Council, was the Superintendent of Sunday School teachers and sang in 
the church choir. He has served as lay minister in absence of the 
minister. He also served on the Seeds of Faith Council.

Proceeding him in death; his parents, David and Elvina Hein; father 
and mother-in-law, Benjamin and Geneva Spatz &amp; Aileen Spatz; his 
nephew, Kirk Balthazor; his first-born son, Douglas D. Hein, and his 
beloved basset hound, Roscoe.

He is survived by his wife Sheila, of the home; son, Shawn D. Hein 
&amp; wife Jen of Collinsville, Oklahoma; his twin brother, John Hein 
and wife Julie of Hoisington; sister &amp; brother-in-law, Cindy and Jim
 Balthazor of Russell; nieces, Joelle (Hein) Jacobs, Teryn (Balthazor) 
Yarmer and husband Neil; great nieces, Jozie Jacobs and Brinley Yarmer; 
great nephews, Jensen Jacobs, Chase Yarmer, and Aiden Yarmer. He is also
 survived by his “best four-legged buddy” Amos.

Friends may call 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, and 9 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, 
with family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Prayer service will begin 
at 7 pm on Wednesday February 19, 2020, all at Nicholson Ricke Funeral

beloved basset hound, Roscoe.He is survived by his wife Sheila, of the home; son, Shawn D. Hein 
&amp; wife Jen of Collinsville, Oklahoma; his twin brother, John Hein 
and wife Julie of Hoisington; sister &amp; brother-in-law, Cindy and Jim
 Balthazor of Russell; nieces, Joelle (Hein) Jacobs, Teryn (Balthazor) 
Yarmer and husband Neil; great nieces, Jozie Jacobs and Brinley Yarmer; 
great nephews, Jensen Jacobs, Chase Yarmer, and Aiden Yarmer. He is also

Don D. Hein

Raymond Dale Lambert passed away peacefully Saturday, February 15, 2020 
at St Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. He was born on August 19,1927
 to Newell and Mildred (Baker) Lambert on their farm two miles north and
 one mile west of Thornburg, Kansas. Dale was the third of six children.
 His siblings were Dwayne, Velda, Joe, Elsie Mae, and Sharon. Dale was 
proud of his Thornburg heritage and it was there that many of his life 
lessons were learned. His parents instilled a strong work ethic, the 
importance of family and a love for the Lord.   He attended Pleasant 
Hill and Thornburg schools. He was raised and baptized in the Thornburg 
Evangelical United Brethren Church that his great grand-parents had 
helped form.


He graduated from Smith Center High School in 1946. That same year 
he was employed by Fred Simmons who was part owner of Simmons-Olliff 
Furniture and Mortuary. This was the beginning of a 45 year career in a 
business of which he would eventually be the major share-holder. As a 
mentor, Fred was a major influence in Dale’s life by setting an example 
 of professionalism in running a business and setting a standard of 
treating people with dignity and respect and of giving back to the 
community.  Dale graduated from The St. Louis School of Mortuary Science
 in 1950.


While in high school Dale met Kay Duvall. They were married December
 24,1949 and they were the parents of three children, Kent, Kinda, and 
Kris. 


The family moved to Kensington, Kansas in 1957 where Dale managed 
the Simmons-Olliff furniture store and mortuary. He became a partner in 
the business in 1959. They spent 27 years in Kensington, serving a  
wonderful community and forming life-long friendships.


Dale and Kay moved back to Smith Center in 1984 where they managed 
the funeral Home and furniture store until Dale retired in 1992. 


After retirement Dale and Kay liked to travel and continued to be 
involved in the Smith Center community attending school and church 
activities. They found great joy in their grandchildren, Chris and Amy. 
 Many hours were spent traveling to and from Salina to watch church and 
school programs, and sports. They were “Grandad and Grandma” to many of 
their grandkids friends.


Kay passed away from cancer on March 12,1996. Dale lost his wife and
 partner of 46 years. They had worked together to build a strong and 
loving marriage, to raise their children, and to grow a successful 
business. 


Dale moved to Wichita when he married Norma Tomlinson Stoddard on 
August 9, 1997. Norma, her daughters, Sharon, Sandra, and Stephanie, and
 their families brought many blessings to Dale’s life. They enjoyed 
traveling and keeping up with all  their grand-kids and great-grand-kids
 activities. They welcomed and brought both their families together for 
Thanksgiving Dinner for many years. 


Dale was a sports fan all his life and was a fierce competitor. He 
played baseball on various local teams and football in high school. He 
was an excellent bowler and won the Kansas State Seniors Championship in
 1989.


 He coached his son’s baseball team and announced the football games
 for Kensington Goldbugs for many years. He loved watching his favorite 
teams; The Royals, The Chiefs, and KU basketball. He was passionate 
about golf and was always trying to improve his game. He played almost 
every day, when weather permitted, at the Hesston Golf course.


Throughout his life Dale was active in several organizations. He was
 the President of the Chamber of Commerce of Smith Center, the 
Commercial Club of Kensington, and the Kensington Lion’s Club. He was 
also on the Board of Directors for Lion’s Club. He served on the City 
Council in Kensington and also served as their mayor. He was the 
Chairman of the Board for the Methodist Church in Kensington and in 
Smith Center. He was on the Kensington School Board. And He also served 
on the Kansas State Board of Funeral Directors. 


Dale was preceded in death by his parents; wife Kay (Duvall) 
Lambert; brothers, Dwayne Lambert and Joe Lambert, sisters; Velda Schenk
 and Sharon Lambert; brothers-in-law, Lynn Schenk, David Miller, Ralph 
Tucker, Harley Keller, Paul Smith, and  Johnny Hooper; sisters-in-law, 
Melberta Lambert, Beverly Lambert, and June Miller.


Dale will be missed by his wife of 22 years, Norma; children, Kent 
(Pat, Kinda Lambert, Kristin Lambert, Sharon(Lee)Stucky, Sandra (Randy)
 Appel, and Stephanie Miller; sister, Elsie Mae (Marvin) Kugler; 
brother-law, Thaine (Donna)Tomlinson; sisters-in-law, Nadine Tucker, 
Elaine Keller, and Reva Smith; 9 grandchildren,15 great-grandchildren; 
and numerous nieces and nephews.

Raymond Dale Lambert

Gustavo Orlando Avila, age 93, passed away on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at Wichita County Health Center Long Term Care in Leoti, Kansas.  Gustavo was born July 17, 1926 in Chihuahua, Mexico, the son of Nerio &amp; Genoveva ( Cazo ) Avila.  A Leoti resident since 1960 moving from Horace, Kansas, he was retired from the former Missouri Pacific Railroad, now Union Pacific Railroad with over 40 years of service.

Gustavo was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Leoti, Kansas.

On June 20, 1952, he married Maria J. Gomez at Ordway, Colorado. She passed away on September 1, 1986, in Leoti, Kansas.  In 1987, he married Rebecca Garcia in Leoti, Kansas.

Gustavo’s surviving family includes his wife, Rebecca Avila of Leoti, Kansas. Six stepchildren including Santiago &amp; Karen Garcia, Jr. of Leoti, Kansas, Samuel &amp; Hortensia Garcia of Hays, Kansas, Jose Ruben Garcia of LaJunta, Colorado, Rose Marie Garcia of Garden City, Kansas, Genoveva Garcia of Garden City, Kansas and Julianna &amp; Tomas Santos of Leoti, Kansas, a sister, Antonia Hernandez of Taos, New Mexico and twelve grandchildren. 

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at  Leoti Cemetery in Leoti, Kansas with Father Tim Hickey officiating.  

Friends may call from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm Tuesday and from 10:00 until Noon Wednesday at Price &amp; Sons Funeral Home in Leoti, Kansas.

Memorials may be given to the Gustavo Avila Memorial Fund and mailed to the funeral home.
