Goodland, KS resident and former Amarillo, TX resident, Lloyd W. Bergsma, 91, passed away on Wednesday, February 12, 2020, at Topside Manor in Goodland.

Lloyd was born on June 24, 1928, Southeast of Goodland at the ranch home. He attended school at Edson Consolidated School, then Kansas State University.&nbsp; He returned to Goodland to partner with his father in the operation of the ranch/farm.&nbsp; Later he continued his education at Colorado State University, where he graduated in 1958.

Lloyd was on the staff at Texas A&amp;M University as an Associate Professor, specializing in Livestock Marketing.&nbsp; He came to Amarillo in 1967 to assist in the establishment of the Texas Cattle Feeders Association where he served as Executive Vice President.&nbsp; After leaving the Association, he was involved in the real estate and investment business in Amarillo.&nbsp; During this entire time, he continued to manage his farm operation in Kansas.

He was a member of the St. Stephen Methodist Church in Amarillo.&nbsp; He was a life member of the Goodland Masonic Lodge #321 and a life member of the Goodland Elks Lodge #1528.&nbsp; Lloyd had a strong interest in athletics and supported the sports programs at WTAMU.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Roger Bergsma, and his sisters Mildred Wright of Sherman Co., Irene Hadra of Shreveport, LA, and&nbsp; Josephine Nimz of Goodland, KS.

Surviving family includes his wife Joan, a son Michael (Connie) Bergsma of Corpus Christi, TX, He is also survived by his grandchildren Amy (Colby) Stapp of Shawnee, KS, Deborah (Jonathan) Strasser of Memphis, TN, grandson Bradly (Christa) Bergsma of Goodland, KS; a step-daughter Barbara (David) Johnson, step-son Steven Lee.

Memorial services for Lloyd will be held Friday, February 21, 2020 at 10:30 AM MT at Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Goodland with Pastor Brian Fugleberg officiating.&nbsp; Private family inurnment will follow in the Goodland Cemetery.

Donna was born on June 05, 1936, in Bazine, Kansas, the daughter of Jacob and Martha (Voos) Strecker.&nbsp; She grew up in Russell, Kansas and graduated from Russell high school.&nbsp; She was married to Marvin E. Schneider.&nbsp; Later she and Marvin were divorced.&nbsp; Donna was blessed with eight children Kevin, Keven, Marvonna, Murray, Darren, Kirby, Denna and Shawn.&nbsp; She was a fulltime homemaker taking care of her growing family.&nbsp; She was a longtime active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; She enjoyed Jigsaw puzzles and visiting with friends and neighbors.&nbsp; Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Surviving family include her sons Keven Schneider (Becky, Darren Schneider (Kim, Kirby Schneider (Karen) and Shawn Schneider (Angela); daughters Marvonna Denning (Kirk) and Denna Schneider (Tina); brother Larry Strecker (Jackie); sisters Dorothy Hanes and Janice Nichols; 19 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

KENSINGTON—Mary Ann Theresa Margaret Dreiling, age 79, passed away 
Sunday, February 9, 2020 at the Arbor Court Retirement Community in 
Salina, KS. 

 She was born the daughter of Sabina Weigel Jones on July 
21, 1940, in Russell, KS.  She attended Russell High School and 
graduated in the class of 1958.   She went on to receive her Bachelor of
 Music Education at Bethany College at Lindsborg, Kansas, graduating 
with the class of 1962.  Her first teaching position was in Gorham, KS 
where the secretary set her up on a blind date with her future husband, 
and love of her life, James J. Dreiling.


She was united in marriage to James J. Dreiling on December 28th, 
1963 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Russell, KS.  They were blessed 
with 2 daughters, Sharon Marie and Jamie Lynn while residing in Hays, 
KS.  In 1974, the family moved to Kensington, KS where they purchased 
the infamous pool hall.  As mom got tired of “flipping hamburgers”, she 
got back into teaching music by taking a position at Downs, KS for 2 
years.  Soon after, she became the band and vocal teacher at USD 238 for
 the next 17 years, in Kensington and Kirwin.  Jim and Mary Ann were 
blessed with 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.  Mary Ann 
enjoyed attending their birthdays, programs, ball games, and 
graduations.  Hobbies she enjoyed were sewing nearly every Halloween 
costume for the grandchildren over the years, crocheting, reading, 
playing cards at the Senior Center, and of course her 4 o’clock coffee 
time at the Corner.  Other activities she enjoyed included getting her 
hair done, shopping, riding her bike at rehab, and attending Blues and 
Jazz concerts in Salina. Despite Mary Ann’s declining health, she never 
let it spoil the good stuff.  Everyone loved this little lady for her 
sweet spirit, positive attitude, and her sass!  


Mary Ann was a member and/or served on the board of many 
organizations such as KMEA, MENC, KNEA, NEA, AHSGR, Retired Teachers 
Association, and the Kensington Public Library Board.


Mary Ann is survived by her daughters, Sharon (Keith) Kresin and 
Jamie (Jack) Jackson; Grandchildren Vincent (Megan) Kresin, Vaughn, and 
Vanessa Kresin: Adam (Jessie) Jackson and Abby (Danial) Martinez; Great 
Grandchildren Colton, Ryan and Deklan Jackson; Tucker and Hudson Kresin;
 and Emmit Martinez.

The Knights of Columbus mourns the loss of Past 
Supreme Knight Virgil C. Dechant, who passed away in his sleep at the 
age of 89 during the night of February 15, 2020. He was the Order’s 
longest-serving supreme knight, holding the office from 1977 to 2000.

“God has called home a good man and one of the 
Knights’ great leaders,” said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. “Virgil 
Dechant used to say that his goal was to leave the Knights better than 
he found it, and in myriad ways, he accomplished that. He leaves a 
lasting legacy and an excellent example of what it means to be a Knight 
and a fraternalist. Nowhere is this more true than in his home state of 
Kansas, which remains in many ways a model jurisdiction.”

Virgil Dechant joined the Knights in 1949 and was a 
member of LaCrosse (Kansas) Council 2970 and St. Augustine Council 2340 
in Liebanthal, Kansas. A very successful businessman, in addition to 
operating a private farm in Kansas, Dechant owned and operated his own 
car dealership and farm equipment firm. Dechant came to New Haven in 
1967 to serve as the supreme secretary. Ten years later, he was elected 
supreme knight.

As supreme knight, Virgil Dechant oversaw tremendous
 growth in the Order’s membership as well as in its assets and insurance
 business, while also opening the Order to greater involvement by the 
wives and families of its members. In addition, Mr. Dechant forged a 
close relationship with the Vatican during the pontificate of St. John 
Paul II, leading the Order to sponsor numerous renovation projects – 
including of the façade of St. Peter’s Basilica, and working with the 
pope to promote the faith in Eastern Europe, which was then behind the 
iron curtain.

Dechant is survived by his wife, Ann, their four children and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Herman Dinges, 90, of Denver, passed away on February 12, 2020 at home, with family by his side. If you knew Herman, you know how much he loved to entertain, and how proud he was of the life he built alongside his wife, Lauraine.

Herman was born on September 21, 1929, to a family of 13 children on a farm near Schoenchen, Kansas, where he was inspired to teach himself how to play music.

After serving in the Army in the Korean War, he married his teenage sweetheart from the nearby city of Hays, moved to Denver, started a career with Samsonite, and raised two children. He also started The Herman Dinges Polka and Variety Band, playing saxophone and accordion, while his wife played piano and sang. He and his band played polka around the country and world, including on the Lawrence Welk Show, Frankie Yankovic's show, the Colorado Polka Days, and Oktoberfest in Denver's Larimer Square.

Herman was also famous for his Christmas lights at his home on Zenobia Street in Denver, that grew bigger and bigger over 50 years. He and his wife dressed as Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus to hand out candy to children and collect donations for the Children's Hospital.

Herman was a proud member of the Military Honor Guard, VFW, American Legion and Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his siblings Lee and Dorothy, his children, Darrell and Judy, his grandchildren and their spouses Amber and Dustin, Kyle and Brittany, Audrey and Alex, Ava and Kevin, and Sheila and Luis, eight great-grandchildren, and his most recent bandmates Dolores, Dale and Dan. He is preceded in death by his wife Lauraine, and 10 siblings.

A viewing will be held on Monday, February 24, 5-7 pm at Advantage Runyan-Stevenson, 6425 W. Alameda Ave., Lakewood, CO 80226.

The funeral mass and reception will be on Tuesday, February 25, 11 am at St. Jude Catholic Church, 9405 W. Florida Ave., Lakewood, CO 80232.

His interment will take place at a later date at St. Joseph Cemetery in Hays.

Marvelene Schreiber, 86, of Osborne, KS passed away on Thursday, 
February 13, 2020 at Parkview Care Center in Osborne, KS. &nbsp;She was born 
on September 11, 1933 to Harold &amp; Alma (Bradshaw) Lund in Osborne 
County, KS. &nbsp;Marvelene was one of several children.

Marvelene graduated from Osborne High School in 1951, after her family moved to town from the family farm at Covert.

Marvelene married Ted Thornburg on December 21, 1951. &nbsp;They moved to 
San Diego where Ted was stationed. &nbsp;Marvelene moved back to Kansas while
 Ted was overseas. &nbsp;She was widowed early, as&nbsp;Ted was killed in a car 
wreck. &nbsp;To this union there was one daughter born, Donetta. &nbsp;Marvelene's
 faith in God and church brought her through that trying time.

On January 7, 1965, Marvelene married Dick Schreiber. &nbsp;To this union a
 son was born, which gave Donetta not only a dad, but a brother, Gary.

Marvelene was an active member of the VFW Aux. &nbsp;She held many offices
 in the auxiliary. &nbsp;She was well known for her baked goods. &nbsp;She 
supplied many a pie, cake or cinnamon roll for Bingo, the Chuckwagon, 
funeral dinners and birthdays. &nbsp;Marvelene was also a well known 
seamstress in the area for repairs and constructing new garments.

Marvelene was preceded in death by her parents;&nbsp;husbands Ted and Dick (2016); grandson, Lance Burch.

Ellsworth, KS; son: Gary (Cecelia) Schreiber of Osborne; grandsons: Ted 
(Kari) Anderson of Halstead, KS; Cole &amp; Lane Schreiber of Osborne,

Marvelene (Lund) Schreiber

Carolyn Ann Bailey, 84, passed away February 14, 2020, at Clara 
Barton Hospital, Hoisington. She was born September 15, 1935, in 
Hoisington, to John and Anna (Larmer) Simmons. Carolyn married Donald 
Lee Bailey June 28, 1953, in Hoisington. He died Sept. 12, 2009.

Carolyn, a life time resident of Hoisington, had been a dedicated and
 active member of First United Methodist Church, Hoisington, the 
American Legion Auxiliary Post 286, VFW Auxiliary Post 7428, both of 
Hoisington, and the 8/40 Reno Salon. She was a past Kansas State 
Department President of the American Legion Auxiliary.&nbsp;&nbsp; In Carolyn and 
Donald's younger years, they enjoyed their national travels to American 
Legion Conventions, and any outdoor activities, including archery and 
lake trips. She was a lifelong reader, journal writer, and card and game
 enthusiast. In more recent years, Carolyn enjoyed puzzle books and 
playing games with her family and friends. Carolyn started her 
professional career as a telephone operator with South Western Bell and 
Western Light and Telephone. After 25 years, she transitioned into 40 
years of employment with Superior Essex, retiring in 2016.

Survivors include one son Ron Bailey and wife Gail of Hoisington; two
 daughters, LeAnn Nuss of Hoisington and Sheila Burgess and husband Lee 
of Sterling; eight grandchildren, Aaron Warrick and wife Natalie, Tisha 
Ritter, Sam Bailey and wife Tara, Nathan Bailey and wife Tiffany, Ian 
Bailey and wife Sarah, Krista Galvan and husband David, Bailey Burgess 
and fiancé Jordan Echer and Alex Burgess and wife Brooke; two step 
grandchildren Shelly Schneider and husband Keith and Chris Nuss; 16 
great grandchildren, Gabe, Nick, Alaina, Suzanna, Peyton, Dylan, Tessa, 
Derek, Olivia, Buddie, Seija, Caleb, Willow, Abram, Cruz, David Jr. and 
one great great grandchild, Penelope; sister-in-law, Doris Simmons of 
Hoisington; and sister-of-the-heart, Marian Birmingham of Excelsior 
Springs, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 
her husband Donald; three brothers, Robert Simmons, Donald Simmons and 
John Simmons; sister, Frances Lee Simmons; and son-in-law, Wally Nuss.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 18, 2020, at 
First United Methodist Church, Hoisington, with Rev. Seong Lee.

Barbara A. Myers, age 83, of Oakley, formerly of Sarcoxie, Missouri, 
died Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at the Wesley Medical Center in 
Wichita. She was born on June 14, 1936 in Jasper, Missouri to Fred and 
Pauline (Sites) Lee.

She was a medical transcriptionist at St. John’s Hospital in Joplin, 
Missouri and a homemaker. Barbara married Harold Myers on December 24, 
1955 in Jasper, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Pauline, her 
husband, Harold, who passed away in 2018, and her son, Mike Myers in 
2017. &nbsp;&nbsp;

She is survived by her daughter, Barb Kelly, and husband Bob of 
Oakley, her son, Lee Myers and wife Rebecca of Springfield, Missouri,

Barbara A. Myers

Shirley Jean Link, 88, passed away February 14, 2020, at River Bend 
Assisted Living, Great Bend. She was born on November 17, 1931 at 
Denver, Colo., to Jack E. &amp; Emma (Feist) Wallace, and was raised in 
Buena Park, Ca., before moving to Bushton, Kan. at age 14. She resided 
in Chase and Great Bend. She married Kenneth J. Link on March 27, 1951 
at Bushton. He died April 9, 2017.

She was a retail sales clerk for Gunn's Clothing, JC Penney's and 
Kitchen Cupboard for many years. She was a member of Prince of Peace 
Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, the Altar Society and former
 member of Daughters of Isabella. She was an avid shopper and the best, 
mother, grandmother, and great grandmother ever.

Survivors include, two daughters, Linda Meyeres and husband Jim of 
Chase, and Denise Barbour and husband Jack of San Angelo, Tex.; a son in
 law, Lynn Bownes, and a daughter in law, Janis Link, both of Great 
Bend; seven grandchildren, Mike Link and wife Kristi, Steven Link, Ryan 
Bownes and wife Staci, Derek Bownes and wife Ashley, Kalesha Bownes, 
Jason Meyeres and wife Darci, and Jamee Kizzar and husband Blake;

Jack Mersch, son of Jim and Fern (Allen) Mersch, passed away February 
11, 2020, one day after his 78th birthday. Jack was born in 1942 in 
rural Edmond, Kansas, the youngest in a family of five. Growing up, Jack
 acquired a strong work ethic from his parents who struggled as farmers 
and ranchers living on the Gudgell Ranch homestead during the depression
 years. Hard work was the rule of life for this and all families during 
this time period. But Fern and Jim knew that work and play mixed well as
 they raised their family. We remember fondly the stories of his 
childhood that Jack loved to share about his many relatives and friends 
who centered their lives around Jim and Fern. Their hospitality and 
kindness were the very foundation of Jack’s personality throughout his 
life. Jack recalled how his mother welcomed all to their table, no 
matter how limited their resources were. She always took care of 
everyone who arrived invited or not. Jack learned from her that helping 
people and taking care of family were what life was about.


After high school Jack attended Fort Hays State University, 
graduating in 1965 with a degree in Botany and Agriculture. The sudden 
death of his father led Jack back home to Edmond where he took over the 
farm operation and the care of his mother. In 1966 Jack met and married 
Sherry Williams. He became a father to Todd and Dennis. Later he moved 
his family to Hill City where he purchased the local tavern from Ben 
Dreiling. In 1972 he began his new career as the owner and operator of 
Jack’s Lounge which later became the J Bar S. Jack’s personality suited 
his business perfectly. He had a dream and worked diligently to become a
 success. At six feet three inches, with bright red hair, humorous wit 
and country boy charm, he was a character who was so likeable that once 
you liked him, you loved him. He attracted customers to the bar, 
customers who became his best friends – his “family”. Jack hustled 
behind the bar with a speed and determination that no glass was ever 
going to be left empty. He served up drinks along with his stories and 
friendship. If you came in as a stranger to him, you left as a new 
friend. The passing years saw many different bartenders who worked for 
Jack, including both of his sons.


After his divorce from Sherry in 1987, Jack continued to run the 
bar, celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2012. By this time Jack had 
become the proud grandfather of Faith and Claire, the daughters of 
Dennis and Tammy. In 2014 health issues forced Jack to retire, and he 
sold the bar to his son Todd and wife Sandy. 


Through the years Jack was involved in many activities and 
organizations. He was an active member in the local Elks Lodge and 
Chamber of Commerce as well as being a volunteer county fireman. Jack 
had a vital part in forming what is now known as Graham County 
Sportsman’s Trap Club. He 


attended many carp derbies in Norton before he founded his own 
annual carp derby now known as the Jack Mersch Outlaw Rod and Reel   


Fishing Tournament which is usually held at Webster State Lake.  In 
1982 Jack became the founding father and chairman of our local Ducks 
Unlimited Chapter. Along with his committee members, Jack led this 
organization as it became more successful each year with its annual 
November banquet. He remained actively involved until 2013.


Jack was a man with many interests and hobbies. His knowledge of 
botany was evident in all his gardening, beautiful flower beds and 
planting trees. He grew up with coon dogs and loved the sport of hunting
 and shooting guns, a fondness he passed on to his sons. Throughout the 
years, his interest in animals inspired him to raise all kinds of birds,
 rabbits, fish and dogs. The more exotic the breed of chicken, the more 
excited he was about incubating the eggs and producing more to sell or 
trade at the Sunday bird sales.


Above all else, fishing was Jack’s favorite of all his outdoor 
activities. His home away from home was Webster Lake where he camped 
with his family and friends. He enjoyed shooting pool and was an avid KU
 basketball fan. Retirement also found him sometimes lying on the couch 
with a stack of Louis L’Amour books. He loved old western movies, John 
Wayne movies being his favorite. Family life was so important to him. 
Keeping alive his family’s history was a top priority. Through the years
 he hosted many family reunions where he shared so many stories of 
aunts, uncles and cousins, times of the past – his heritage.


Perhaps the biggest joy in Jack’s life was being a grandfather. He 
was always thrilled to be with his granddaughters, spoiling them with 
his love. He was certainly a great grandfather and bragged about them to
 everyone. As Jack’s health further declined, he moved into Dawson Place
 Nursing Home, living out his final days. 


Jack was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Don and Bruce 
Lloyd, and sister Jeanice. Survivors include his two sons Todd and wife 
Sandy, Dennis and wife Tammy, and granddaughters Faith and Claire, all 
of Hill City, and a sister Marge Wilson of Wyoming. Jack was a true 
legend in our community, although he remained humble to the end. He will
 be forever remembered and sorely missed by all.

customers who became his best friends – his “family”. Jack hustled 
behind the bar with a speed and determination that no glass was ever 
going to be left empty. He served up drinks along with his stories and 
friendship. If you came in as a stranger to him, you left as a new 
friend. The passing years saw many different bartenders who worked for 
Jack, including both of his sons.
After his divorce from Sherry in 1987, Jack continued to run the 
bar, celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2012. By this time Jack had 
become the proud grandfather of Faith and Claire, the daughters of 
Dennis and Tammy. In 2014 health issues forced Jack to retire, and he 
sold the bar to his son Todd and wife Sandy. 
Through the years Jack was involved in many activities and 
organizations. He was an active member in the local Elks Lodge and 
Chamber of Commerce as well as being a volunteer county fireman. Jack 
had a vital part in forming what is now known as Graham County 
Sportsman’s Trap Club. He 
attended many carp derbies in Norton before he founded his own 
annual carp derby now known as the Jack Mersch Outlaw Rod and Reel 
Fishing Tournament which is usually held at Webster State Lake. In 
1982 Jack became the founding father and chairman of our local Ducks 
Unlimited Chapter. Along with his committee members, Jack led this 
organization as it became more successful each year with its annual 
November banquet. He remained actively involved until 2013.
Jack was a man with many interests and hobbies. His knowledge of 
botany was evident in all his gardening, beautiful flower beds and 
planting trees. He grew up with coon dogs and loved the sport of hunting
 and shooting guns, a fondness he passed on to his sons. Throughout the 
years, his interest in animals inspired him to raise all kinds of birds,
 rabbits, fish and dogs. The more exotic the breed of chicken, the more 
excited he was about incubating the eggs and producing more to sell or 
trade at the Sunday bird sales.
Above all else, fishing was Jack’s favorite of all his outdoor 
activities. His home away from home was Webster Lake where he camped 
with his family and friends. He enjoyed shooting pool and was an avid KU
 basketball fan. Retirement also found him sometimes lying on the couch 
with a stack of Louis L’Amour books. He loved old western movies, John 
Wayne movies being his favorite. Family life was so important to him. 
Keeping alive his family’s history was a top priority. Through the years
 he hosted many family reunions where he shared so many stories of 
aunts, uncles and cousins, times of the past – his heritage.
Perhaps the biggest joy in Jack’s life was being a grandfather. He 
was always thrilled to be with his granddaughters, spoiling them with 
his love. He was certainly a great grandfather and bragged about them to
 everyone. As Jack’s health further declined, he moved into Dawson Place
 Nursing Home, living out his final days. 
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Don and Bruce 
Lloyd, and sister Jeanice. Survivors include his two sons Todd and wife 
Sandy, Dennis and wife Tammy, and granddaughters Faith and Claire, all 
of Hill City, and a sister Marge Wilson of Wyoming. Jack was a true 
legend in our community, although he remained humble to the end. He will

Curtis Parke of Collyer, KS passed away on February 11, 2020 in Lenexa, KS surrounded by his family. He was born in Quinter, Kansas to Peter and Rose Parke on September 2, 1929. He graduated from Trego Community High School in WaKeeney in 1946. Curtis briefly attended the University of Kansas before being called to serve in the Korean War. Curtis married Pauline Reitcheck on February 26, 1957.

Curtis is the youngest of five children, born to a family of Irish and Czech immigrants. Though his family faced the difficulties of the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl, he recounts a happy childhood on the family farm. Curtis considered himself extremely blessed to have lived his entire life farming this same land on the Hackberry Creek and raising cattle on the green Kansas pastures.

Curtis’ most endearing qualities were his unstoppable optimism and his enduring enthusiasm. He constantly looked on the bright side and saw the good in everything. His outlook on life was reflected in the many passions that he held, namely singing, music, storytelling, and history. Trips to town often became music sessions for his children, and anytime there was an audience, a joke or story would be told.

Curtis was a lifelong student and teacher for his children and grandchildren, especially in the areas of current events and politics. He always encouraged his children to be informed and engaged in the world around them. Nothing made him prouder than to hear about the many accomplishments of his grandchildren.

Undoubtedly, one of the most impactful events in his life was his service in the U.S. Army. He brought back many stories from his time in Korea, as well as a Purple Heart. But most importantly, Curtis brought back a perspective that he carried with him his entire life: people all over the world, no matter race or religion, share a common hope for peace and prosperity. This principle was reflected in the kindness and acceptance he extended to all people.

Curtis was deeply devoted to his Catholic faith. He was a lifelong member of Christ the King Catholic Church in WaKeeney and the Knights of Columbus. Though Curtis’ family and friends feel a deep void with his passing, they understand that he is now at peace. His legacy and memory are firmly implanted in their hearts and minds.&nbsp; `&nbsp;

Ronald P. "Ron" Crawshaw, 74, McCracken, Kansas, died Wednesday, February 12, 2020, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

Ronald was born March 25, 1945, in Neodesha, Kansas, the son of Paul Henry and Mamie V. (Houser) Crawshaw.&nbsp; He was a resident of Rush County, Kansas, for 40+ years, moving from Fredonia, Kansas, in 1979.&nbsp; A 1963 graduate of Fredonia High School, Fredonia, Kansas, he was a self employed carpenter.

He was a member of the Kansas Army National Guard.&nbsp; He was also an &nbsp; E-6 training NCO of the 95th Maintenance Company of Hays, Kansas.

He was a member of the Emmanuel Southern Baptist Church, Coffeyville, Kansas.

He enjoyed traveling to watch his grandchildren play basketball.&nbsp; He also enjoyed the family dog, Cocoa.&nbsp; You would see them driving around town in the pickup.

In 1962, he was inducted into the Tri-Valley All Star Football Team in Topeka, Kansas.

On September 19, 1967, he married Ruthanne Gray at the EUB Church, McCracken, Kansas. &nbsp;

Survivors include:&nbsp; his wife, Ruthanne Crawshaw, McCracken, Kansas; one son, Jeffrey Crawshaw (Billie, La Crosse, Kansas; one daughter, Paula Greenway (companion, Steve Erbert, WaKeeney, Kansas; three grandchildren, William Greenway (Theresa, Michael Greenway, and Stephanie Greenway; and one great grandson, Kade Greenway.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Alana Rogers.

LaVerne Buchholz

Donald W. Mai, 91, peacefully passed away on January 31, 2020, at Jefferson’s Gardens in Edmond, Oklahoma. 

He was born December 17, 1928, in Hays, Kansas, to William and Katherine Mai. He graduated from Ellis High School in 1945 and went to Fort Hays State University.&nbsp;

After college, he joined the Air Force and served during the Korean War. Don worked for Cessna and Boeing and the Wichita School system until he retired in 1995.

He is survived by his children, Gary Mai (Lori) of Wichita, Kansas, Wanda Birdwell (Dale) of Edmond, Oklahoma and Gloria Mai of Monument Colorado; two grandchildren, Christopher Mai of Wichita, Kansas and Tiffany Mai of Honolulu, Hawaii.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dwaine, and a sister, Delores Kosman.

Memorial visitation will be 5:00 - 7:00 pm Friday, February 21, 2020 at Keithley Funeral Chapel 400 E 17th Ellis, KS 67637. Graveside inurnment will be at St. John’s Cemetery north of Ellis on Saturday February 22, 2020 at 11:00 am.

Shirley Ann Gerhardt, age 83, of Wakeeney Kansas passed away Tuesday,
 February 11, 2020 at Trego County Lemke Long Term Care Center.&nbsp; She was
 born August 19, 1936 in Ellis, Kansas to Andrew Scheck and Thresia 
(Augustine) Scheck.&nbsp;

Shirley was a member of Daughters of Isabella and St. Mary’s church. 
She enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting, knitting and mostly spending 
time with her grand-children and great grand-children. She opened her 
home to everyone and enjoyed cooking for everyone as well.

She is survived by her children, Robert Dale Gerhardt, Ellis, Ks; 
Lucy Fabrizius, Hays, Ks; her sisters Norma Brack, Ellis, Ks; and Edna 
Hejny of Ellis, Ks; five grand-children, James (Shari) Fabrizius; Joshua
 Fabrizius and Sheena Schneider; Amanda (Jason) Yunker ; Hannah 
Fabrizius, and Jeremiah Gerhardt; five great grand-children; Joseph, 
Jastin and Mason Yunker; Trevor and Liam Fabrizius.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Joseph, and 
son-in-law Kenneth Fabrizius, two brothers Leroy and Donald, and a

Shirley Ann Gerhardt

Douglas R. Petersilie, 71, passed away on February 12, 2020 at his 
home in Ness County, Kansas. He was born on December 20, 1948 in Dodge 
City, Kansas the son of Ray and Martina (Lang) Petersilie. He was 
baptized at Sacred Heart Church in Ness City.

Doug attended school in Ness City, graduating from high school in 
1967. After spending one year at Garden City Community College, he 
transferred to Fort Hays State University where he was a member of Alpha
 Kappa Lambda fraternity. He married Jeanie Shank on December 31, 1972. 
After graduating from Fort Hays, they moved to his family’s farm in 
southern Ness County. He was lifetime farmer-stockman. He served his 
community on various boards and for a few years as an EMS responder. He 
also served in the Army Reserves for six years.

He is survived by his wife, three children and their spouses, and 
seven grandchildren: Jared and Erin Petersilie, Ethan and Jadyn, 
LaCrosse, Kansas; Travis and Laurie Petersilie, Emma, Isabel, and 
Aubrey, Ness City, Kansas; and Kalyn and Kyle Newman, Koby and Kade,

present on Sunday, February 16, 2020, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.

home in Ness County, Kansas. He was born on December 20, 1948 in Dodge 
City, Kansas the son of Ray and Martina (Lang) Petersilie. He was 
baptized at Sacred Heart Church in Ness City.Doug attended school in Ness City, graduating from high school in 
1967. After spending one year at Garden City Community College, he 
transferred to Fort Hays State University where he was a member of Alpha
 Kappa Lambda fraternity. He married Jeanie Shank on December 31, 1972. 
After graduating from Fort Hays, they moved to his family’s farm in 
southern Ness County. He was lifetime farmer-stockman. He served his 
community on various boards and for a few years as an EMS responder. He 
also served in the Army Reserves for six years.He is survived by his wife, three children and their spouses, and 
seven grandchildren: Jared and Erin Petersilie, Ethan and Jadyn, 
LaCrosse, Kansas; Travis and Laurie Petersilie, Emma, Isabel, and 
Aubrey, Ness City, Kansas; and Kalyn and Kyle Newman, Koby and Kade,

Lloyd Wilbur Bergsma

Errol Lynn Maranville, 71, of Waldo, Kansas, died on Wednesday, February 12, 2020, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Lynn was born on August 
31, 1948, in Russell, Kansas, the son of Chester E. and Bessie M. 
(Scott) Maranville.&nbsp; He grew up in Russell until age 12 and moved to 
Denver, Colorado.&nbsp; He graduated from Washington High School in Denver in
 the class of 1965. After high school, he was married to Jane Nichols and
 from this union they were blessed with three daughters Eilisa, Leslie and 
Jamie.&nbsp; Not long after being married, he was drafted and he served in the
 United States Army and fought in the Vietnam war and received a bronze 
star. His marriage to Jane ended in divorce after 10 years.&nbsp; Lynn was 
fortunate to find love a second time when he met and was united in 
marriage to Joanne Hoffman on March 07, 1982, in Tacoma, Washington.&nbsp; He
 worked as a freight claims inspector with the Union Pacific Railroad 
from 1967 to 1995.&nbsp; He was a member of the Waldo United Methodist Church
 in Waldo, Kansas.

Surviving family include
 his wife Joanne of the home; mother Bessie Maranville of Russell, 
Kansas; daughters Eilisa Maes and husband Randy of Anchorage, Alaska, 
Leslie Vun of Tacoma, Washington and Jamie Harmon and husband Shane of 
Olympia, Washington; son William Ryan Hoffman and wife Regina of 
Charlotte, North Carolina and daughter Lisa Ann Murphy of Seattle, 
Washington; sister Cherry A. Noel and husband James of Russell, Kansas 
and 15 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and brother William R. Maranville.

A private burial 
was held at 11 A.M. on Friday, February 14, 2020, at the Russell City 
Cemetery in Russell, Kansas with Pastor Stacey Ellsworth officiating.&nbsp; 
The Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 provided a military honor guard.&nbsp; A 
memorial service will be held at a later time.&nbsp; Pohlman-Varner-Peeler 
Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service 
arrangements.

Richard Leo Eaton, 51, passed away February 13, 2020 at University of Kansas Health Systems Hays Campus, Hays.

He was born November 1, 1968 in Needles, California, the son of Dale Gordon and Janice L. Phye Eaton.

Moving from Barstow, California in 2001, he was a longtime area 
resident and was employed at various jobs with Rosewood Services, Great 
Bend. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned. He 
enjoyed riding horses, bowling, and loved attending Rosewood Dances.

Survivors include: two sisters, Katherine M. Eaton, Texas, Allison R.
 Sanchez, Barstow, California; three step sisters, Karla Bartz, Theresa 
Medina, both of Salina, Angela Lyon, Manhattan; four step brothers, 
Rodney Bartz, Wichita, Randy Bartz, Great Bend, Arlan Bartz, Vero Beach,
 Florida, Jeffrey Bartz, Olathe; a step sister-in-law, Sandi Bartz, 
Larned; several nieces and nephews, and his Rosewood Family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dale Eaton, Janice Eaton; 
step mother, Carol Bartz Eaton; and a step brother, Michael Bartz.

Graveside service 1:00 p.m. Monday, February 17, 2020 at Highland

Richard Leo Eaton

Thomas Lee Rominger, Jr., 55, of Colby, died Sunday, February 9, 2020, 
at Salina Regional Health Center, Salina, KS. 

He was born June 27, 1964,
 in Olney, Maryland, to Norma Jean (Sexton) and Thomas Lee Rominger, Sr.
 Thomas worked in landscaping and home improvement. In his free time he 
enjoyed fishing, building furniture and walking dogs. He also loved 
cheering on the Washington Nationals, Denver Broncos and his favorite 
NASCAR driver, Jeff Gordon. On January 3, 2006, Thomas married Susie 
Ball, in King George, VA. 


He was preceded in death by his mother, Norma Jean Trammel.


He is survived by his wife, Susie Rominger, of Colby; son Bryan Thomas 
Rominger, of Virginia; father Thomas Lee Rominger, Sr.; sister Kathy 
Hickman and brothers, Michael Wise and Timmy Wise. 


Cremation was chosen. The family will receive friends from 11:00-1:00 
p.m. Saturday, February 22, 2020 at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby. Memorials

Carlson, of Hays, died on February 11, 2020 in Topeka at the age of 88.&nbsp; He was born on March 2, 1931 in rural Red
Willow County, Nebraska to Rodger and Esther Carlson.&nbsp; He was the youngest of 5 children. He graduated from McCook High School,
then the University of Nebraska Medical School in 1956.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;He
was preceded in death by his brothers, Paul and John, and sisters Ruth and
Jean, and his first wife, Marilyn, to whom he was married for nearly 50 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He served 2 years active duty in the United
States Army followed by 2 years in the active reserves.

In 1954 he
married Marilyn Puelz, and together they had four children before moving to
Hays, Ks in 1965.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He was a partner in
Hays Orthopaedic Clinic and practiced medicine there for 33 years until his
retirement in 1998.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;He loved nature, and was an avid birdwatcher
until his eyesight failed.&nbsp;&nbsp; He also
loved to travel. &nbsp;Marilyn&nbsp; died in 2004.&nbsp;
&nbsp;In 2011, he married Sharon
Savage.

Survivors
include:&nbsp; wife, Sharon, Hays, children Bill,
Peculiar, MO, Cyd Schmidt (Bob, Topeka, Tim (Arlene, Phoenix, Sue Blackman (David,
Topeka, and grandchildren, Dana Schwisow (Ross, Rodger Schmidt (Kelsey, Greg
Schmidt (Rachel, Corey Lodder (Michelle, Evan Lodder, Garrett, Adrienne, and Blake
Carlson, Drew Blackman, and great grandchildren, Laney, Ty, and Mara Schwisow,
Cheyenne Schmidt, and &nbsp;Emily and Connor
Lodder.&nbsp; 

Sharon’s
children and grandchildren were also a big part of his life. &nbsp;&nbsp;They include her daughter Marcy Gansel
(Chris, Hill City; &nbsp;Greg Savage
(Tiffany, Lenexa; and grandchildren Megan Walker (Colton, Emily, Ethan and
Dylan Gansel, Nick and Ben Savage. 

&nbsp;He was a member of the First United Methodist
Church of Hays, Hays Optimist Club, and volunteered with other community
organizations.

Raymond Reichert, age 94, of Spearfish, South Dakota, died Friday, February 7, 2020, at Lutheran Hospice in Wheat Ridge, Colorado.

Raymond was born in Johnstown, Colorado on February 25, 1925, to Henry and Sophie (Roth) Reichert.&nbsp;
