Gladys Marcum, 83, passed away Wednesday, August 5, 2020 at Wilson Care 
and Rehabilitation in Wilson, KS. She was born on January 26, 1937 in 
Hoisington, KS to Harold and Alice (Crawford) Stevenson. On July 25, 
1957 she was united in marriage to Frank Marcum in Alva, OK. They were 
blessed with 3 children: Terry, Susan, and Patricia.
 Gladys worked as a store clerk at Mr. K’s Food Town in Plainville 
until her retirement. She was a member of the Women’s American Legion, 
VFW Auxiliary, the Drama Club, and the Plainville-Stockton Quilt Guild.
 Left to cherish her memory is her son, Terry Marcum and wife Phyllis
 of Colorado Springs, CO; daughter, Susan Thornton and husband Bill of 
Lorraine, KS; brothers, Ed, Pat, Larry, and Jim Stevenson; sisters, 
Lorna Preciado and Judy Schuh; grandchildren, Brad and Dustin Higdon, 
who were raised by Frank and Gladys, Shaun and Brett Thornton, Sandra 
Jean; 12 great-grandchildren; and 
 2 great-great grandchildren.
 Gladys is preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Alice; 
husband, Frank Marcum; daughter, Patricia Swanson; brothers, Richard, 
Harold, and Mike Stevenson; and sister, Barbara Harless.
 A private family service will be held at a later date. Memorials are

Jeanne Winter died on August 6, 2020. She was 92. The daughter of 
George and Agnes (Brull) Gatschet she grew up in Hays, Ks along with her
 four surviving brothers, Tom, Paul, Francis and George. In 1948, she 
married Charles Winter and moved to Garden City, Ks. Together she and 
Charles raised their four children in the family home they built 
together on Davis Street. There, they often shared their home with “the
 old aunts” for Sunday meals, holidays and family celebrations. As a 
housewife and mother in the 1950s and 1960s she cared for her children, 
baked, sewed, kept a great house and taught her children their chores. 
Jeanne valued learning and encouraged and supported her children’s 
educational pursuits. For herself, she pursued her interests in 
silversmithing, woodworking, needlepoint, stained glass and other 
projects. She developed her own business as a china painter and 
instructor and traveled the country with Charles, sharing her expertise.
 Every pursuit resulted in gifts she created for her children, their 
families, neighbors and friends. 
Jeanne’s most enduring, lifelong relationship was with God. She was a 
devout Catholic and “charter” parishioner of St. Dominic Church and 
School. She was instrumental in the development of Perpetual Adoration 
at Saint Catherine’s Hospital and worked tirelessly for many years to 
foster its success. She prayed daily to be welcomed in heaven. 
She is survived by her children Mary (Jim), Chuck (Mary Ellen), TK and 
Michel (Emmett), her “Grands”, Lauren, Logan, Shannon, Dianne, Steven, 
Shane and Zach and seven great grandchildren. She joins her parents, 
Charles, son-in-law Greg, sisters-in-law Amy and Ethel, many friends and
 family in heaven. 
A Rosary will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, August 10, 2020 at St. 
Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City, Kansas with Mass of Christian 
Burial following at 10:00 a.m. (with social distancing). A private 
burial is planned. In lieu of flowers, Jeanne requested memorials be

Gary Levi Olson

Thomas Wesley Edgett, son of Louis and Ila Mae (Manners) Edgett, was 
born August 20, 1951 in Norton, Kansas and passed away at the Hays 
Medical Center in Hays, Kansas August 3, 2020, at the age of 68.
 Tom's early years were spent on the farm near Edmond, later moving 
to Colorado Springs, Colorado. In January 1964, the family moved to Hill
 City where Tom graduated from high school in 1969. Tom went to Colby 
Community College and Fort Hays State University where he obtained his 
teaching degree in the math and science fields. Tom student taught in 
Norton before taking a position in Eureka, Kansas for a year. Then he 
returned to Hill City High School where he taught for 29 years until his
 retirement August 31, 2005. During his teaching years he coached Hill 
City girls’ basketball taking the girls to state several times.
 Tom loved everything outdoors. He enjoyed cutting horses and bronc 
riding and even has a couple of trophies to prove he was pretty good at 
it. Hunting and fishing were common activities for him, and he never 
lacked for family or friends just waiting for that call to go. Tom's 
friends were very important to him and could always count on him to lend
 a helping hand. In the past few years, the support of his friends in 
his own times of need was greatly appreciated.
 Tom married Jill Diane Waddle December 30, 1986 in Norton. With this
 marriage, Tom became an instant dad to Shane and Ryan, a role he did 
not take lightly. He also welcomed son Kyle in 1990. His married life 
was filled with teaching, coaching, school activities, goats, calves, 
cattle, chickens and birds, emus, a few horses, a mule, and lots of bird
 and coon dogs. With retirement he enjoyed his elk herd and his lap 
dogs, Duke and Monster. Diane figured out very soon in their marriage 
that if she did not learn to hunt and fish, she was going to be sitting 
at home alone. Family was very important to Tom. He was so proud of his
 sons. As the grandkids came along, it was very important for him to be 
part of their lives, watching them grow and teaching them to shoot! 
 Tom was preceded in death by his parents Louis and Ila Mae Edgett; 
one brother Bob Edgett; and his paternal and maternal grandparents. 
Survivors include his wife Jill Diane; his three sons: Kyle Edgett, 
Lenora; Shane Woodard and Karin, Addisyn and Aidric of Forney, Texas; 
Ryan Woodard and Leann, Isabelle, Gideon and Sydney of Wichita; his two 
sisters Rhonda Cooper, Topeka and Beverely Parks, Kansas City, Missouri;
 nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and many cousins.

Thomas Wesley Edgett

Richard Joseph Griffin, 74, of Atwood, died Monday, August 3, 2020. 


Richard was born to Paul E and Viola (Coyne) Griffin on April 15, 1946 
in Marysville KS. At the tender age of 4, Rich and his brother Paul Jr. 
were reluctantly admitted to Winfield State Hospital by their father 
after their mother passed suddenly. For 26 years, he lived in different 
institutions. He joined our family at PDC in 1977. In 1994, Rich moved 
into a house with his good friend Donald Gilbert. A few years later 
Don’s sister Susan and her husband Loren purchased a trailer home for 
them. Susan continued to love and care for Rich after Don’s passing. 
Rich loved Susan and appreciated her loving care. 
How do we remember Rich? Many years ago, he said I could use the word 
“ornery”. He was that and our teaser. He loved to have fun. Rich enjoyed
 coffee, hot cakes, cinnamon rolls, banana cake and coke. He liked 
watching Westerns and wanted popcorn anytime he watched a movie. (Of 
course, half the popcorn landed on the floor!) He loved Special Olympics
 Basketball, bowling, softball, shooting pool, going to camp and of 
course Christmas. Rich was a very big fan of RCHS football and 
basketball games. Some of his favorites were going fishing, dogs and 
holding babies. 
Rich attended the Christian Church and was dear friends with Jim Begley.
 Mr. Begley took such special care of Rich and he loved him dearly. Last
 month our hearts were touched by Rich’s tenderness for Kelly. He had a 
bouquet of flowers for her and he kept teasing her with them. Finally, 
he gave them to her and said “Love you” 
From all of your PDC family we were blessed to have you in our lives. We will miss you and love you!! 
A memorial service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 14, 2020
 at the Prairie Development Center, Atwood. Following the service, at

Richard Joseph Griffin

Bernice Louise Moore, age 91, died on August 4, 2020 at Cedar Village
 Long Term Care, Ness City.&nbsp; She was born on August 15, 1928 in Bazine, 
Kansas the daughter of Ed and Clara (Michel) Witthuhn.

Bernice was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid and
 the Golden Years Club all of Bazine.&nbsp; She was a graduate of the Bazine 
High School and thoroughly enjoyed raising her family and attending her 
grandchildren's' sports and school activities.

On January 28, 1948 she married Dean Moore in Bazine, Kansas.&nbsp; He 
preceded her in death on December 10, 1998 after 49 years of marriage.

She is survived by her daughter, Denise Corsair and her husband, 
Scott of Bazine; three grandsons, Chris and Nicole Corsair of Hays and 
their children, Hank, Gus, Morgan, and Maddy; Brett and Sara Corsair of 
Bazine and their children, Emmitt, Owen, and Scarlett; Shane and Allison
 Corsair of Bazine and their daughter, RaeLee.&nbsp; Bernice was preceded in 
death by her husband, parents, and her sister, Claretta Pfannenstiel and
 her husband, Ralph.

Funeral services will be held at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City 
on Friday, August 7, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. followed by burial in the Bazine
 Cemetery.&nbsp; Viewing will be at Fitzgerald Funeral Home on Thursday from 
Noon until 9:00 p.m. with the family present from 5-7 p.m.

Bernice Louise Moore

Charles "Charlie" Munsch was born April 10, 1945, in Hays, Kansas, to Carl and Emma (Reichert) Munsch, Antonio, KS.&nbsp; He was the 11th of 12 children. He passed away peacefully at his home in Russell KS on August 4, 2020.&nbsp;

Charlie grew up on the Munsch family farm located one mile north of Antonino until 1956 when the family moved to Hays, KS.&nbsp; He attended Antonino Grade School until the sixth grade.&nbsp; In Hays, he finished his elementary school days at Jefferson West.&nbsp; His high school years were spent at St Joseph Military Academy (now TMP-Marion High School) graduating in 1963.&nbsp; In 1965, he was drafted into the U. S. Army and served a two-year term with one year in Viet Nam. He was a proud Vietnam veteran.&nbsp;

In 1967, he moved to Kansas City, KS where he was employed as an auto mechanic for 12 years at Bud Brown Chrysler-Plymouth, Overland Park, KS. &nbsp;

In 1968, he married Norma Jean (Jeanie) Brock at Ss Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Cawker City, KS. The couple made their home in Kansas City Kansas for 4 years.&nbsp; In 1972, they moved to Louisburg, KS where they built their own home North and East of Louisburg.&nbsp; Two children were joyfully adopted into the family, Brian Patrick in 1975 and Rebecca Ann in 1977.&nbsp; They remained in Louisburg until 1979 when they moved to Cawker City, Ks.&nbsp; There they bought a Chrysler and Massey Ferguson dealership, which they owned for 3 years.&nbsp;

When the dealership closed, Charlie was employed by Waconda Motors Chevrolet dealership as a mechanic for two years. He then began employment with Wise Construction Inc. until 2001 when he moved to Hays. In 2001, he was employed by Commercial Builders for two years and one year by Glassman, Inc.&nbsp; In 2004, he became head of maintenance at TMP-Marion high school where he worked until retirement his in 2012.&nbsp; In 2013, he became a resident of Russell, KS.&nbsp; From 2014 to 2016 he was a bus driver for USD 207, Russell. He also for a short time was maintenance man for St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Russell. &nbsp;

Proceeding Charlie in death were his parents; brothers Severin, Eddie, Victor, Leonard, Francis and James, sisters Helen Jarmon, Alice Dechant, Delores Diemert and Eileen Hoff.&nbsp;

Charlie was very talented and his mother-in-law once proclaimed, “He can fix anything”.&nbsp; In his teen years, he worked alongside his father in house building and carpentry in Hays.&nbsp; He never lost his talent for woodworking and building, which was evident with the home he and Jeanie built in 1972 in Louisburg and then a cabinet shop while living there.&nbsp; In Cawker City, he and wife Jeanie completely remodeled their home.&nbsp; He also built grandfather clocks, toys for grandchildren and in last several years began repairing clocks as a hobby. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Over the last few years he and Jeanie enjoyed trips in their RV as well as spending time at area lakes for days at a time.&nbsp;

While in Cawker City, Charlie was a baseball coach for little league and K-18 ball teams as well umpire for city leagues.&nbsp; He also served on Cawker City Council from 1994 to 1999. In 1999, he was appointed&nbsp; as mayor and served in that capacity until resigning in 2001 when he moved to Hays.&nbsp; 

He is a member of the St Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Russell; St. Nicholas of Myra Knights of Columbus, Hays and The American Legion. He was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Parish, Hays, SS Peter and Paul Parish, Cawker City, KS and Knights of Columbus Council 1868, Cawker City and served as Grand Knight 1984-1986 and again 1988-1989 and as Financial Secretary 1996-2001.&nbsp; He also served as a volunteer fireman in Cawker City from 1981 to 2000.

Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, August 10, 2020 at St. Mary’s Queen of Angels Catholic Church.&nbsp; Cremation will follow the services and a private burial of Ashes will follow at a later date.&nbsp; Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Sunday, August 9, 2020 at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church with the Vigil being held at 6:30 PM, Sunday at the church. 

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to St. Mary Queen of Angels Maintenance Fund or education fund for great grandchildren. Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

 </figure>Charles "Charlie" Munsch was born April 10, 1945, in Hays, Kansas, to Carl and Emma (Reichert) Munsch, Antonio, KS.&nbsp; He was the 11th of 12 children. He passed away peacefully at his home in Russell KS on August 4, 2020.&nbsp;Charlie grew up on the Munsch family farm located one mile north of Antonino until 1956 when the family moved to Hays, KS.&nbsp; He attended Antonino Grade School until the sixth grade.&nbsp; In Hays, he finished his elementary school days at Jefferson West.&nbsp; His high school years were spent at St Joseph Military Academy (now TMP-Marion High School) graduating in 1963.&nbsp; In 1965, he was drafted into the U. S. Army and served a two-year term with one year in Viet Nam. He was a proud Vietnam veteran.&nbsp;In 1967, he moved to Kansas City, KS where he was employed as an auto mechanic for 12 years at Bud Brown Chrysler-Plymouth, Overland Park, KS. &nbsp;In 1968, he married Norma Jean (Jeanie) Brock at Ss Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Cawker City, KS. The couple made their home in Kansas City Kansas for 4 years.&nbsp; In 1972, they moved to Louisburg, KS where they built their own home North and East of Louisburg.&nbsp; Two children were joyfully adopted into the family, Brian Patrick in 1975 and Rebecca Ann in 1977.&nbsp; They remained in Louisburg until 1979 when they moved to Cawker City, Ks.&nbsp; There they bought a Chrysler and Massey Ferguson dealership, which they owned for 3 years.&nbsp;When the dealership closed, Charlie was employed by Waconda Motors Chevrolet dealership as a mechanic for two years. He then began employment with Wise Construction Inc. until 2001 when he moved to Hays. In 2001, he was employed by Commercial Builders for two years and one year by Glassman, Inc.&nbsp; In 2004, he became head of maintenance at TMP-Marion high school where he worked until retirement his in 2012.&nbsp; In 2013, he became a resident of Russell, KS.&nbsp; From 2014 to 2016 he was a bus driver for USD 207, Russell. Charles 'Charlie' Munsch

Gerald J. Schneweis, 82, affectionately know as Jack, of rural Claflin, Kansas passed away on Sunday evening, August 2, 2020,&nbsp; at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas.&nbsp; 

Jack
 was born on October 15, 1937, at Great Bend, Kansas, to John and Margaret
 (Boor) Schneweis.&nbsp; He graduated from Odin High School in 1955 and was 
united in marriage to Sandra E. Titsworth on May 4, 1963, at Great Bend.&nbsp;
 Jack served in the Kansas National Guard between 1959-1965.&nbsp; He was a 
member of Holy Family Parish at Odin, Kansas.

A lifelong resident of Barton County, Kansas, Jack was a 
carpenter, farmer and stockman, only recently retiring.&nbsp; Using his 
extraordinary carpentry skills, he helped many local families, churches 
and businesses improve and beautify their surroundings.

Jack was an Odin Chairholder.&nbsp; He enjoyed spending time 
with neighbors and friends watching Chiefs football.&nbsp; He often felt the 
need to call the Governor and dispute the drawn Keno numbers.

Jack is survived by his wife, Sandra E. Schneweis of the 
home; one daughter Melanie (and her husband Curtis) Arbuckle of Hays, 
Kansas; two sons: Brian (and his wife Lorevil) Schneweis of Great Bend, 
Kansas and Jason (and his wife, Debbie) Schneweis of Omaha, Nebraska; 
two grandchildren:&nbsp; Jackson and Victoria Schneweis; three sisters:&nbsp; 
Dorothy Maneth, Mary Stewart, and Bernice Huslig all of Great Bend, 
Kansas and two brothers:&nbsp; Francis Scheweis of Guymon, Oklahoma and 
Herman “Butch” Schneweis of Hoisington, Kansas; numerous nieces and 
nephews.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Leo 
Schneweis and three sisters:&nbsp; Margaret Hitschmann, Rita Klug, and Judy 
Nimmo.

With the current pandemic, the family has chosen a 
private viewing.&nbsp; Graveside Services will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday,
 August 7, 2020 at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery north of Beaver, Kansas 
where appropriate social distancing is encouraged,&nbsp; Fr. Terrance Klein 
officiating.&nbsp; A Memorial Mass and Celebration of Life will be scheduled

Cheryl K. Miller, 69, passed away, Wednesday, July 29, 2020. 

Cheryl was a 1968 
graduate of Hays High and a 1970 graduate of Brown Mackie School of 
Business. She married Curtis Miller who preceded her in death in 1988. 
She was also preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Catherine 
Schremmer. 

Survivors include her son, Craig (Jennifer) Miller of 
Wichita; daughter, Carrie (Christopher) Foster of Appleton, WI, and 
grandsons, Mackenzie, Curtis, Braeden Miller and Reed Thomas all of 
Wichita, Clayton and Collin Foster of Appleton, WI; sister, Nadine 
(Sherman) Herold of Ozawkie, KS, along with numerous nieces and nephews,
 cousins and friends. 

Cheryl built a successful career in various 
departments at Kansas State University, retiring in 2013 as an 
Administrative Assistant to the Vice President of Research. Her hobbies 
and interests included gardening, BUNCO, volunteer work, puzzles, music 
and spending time with family. 

Rosary, 10:00 a.m.; Mass of Resurrection 
at 10:30 a.m., both Wednesday, August 5, 2020 at St. Catherine of Siena 
Catholic Church in Wichita.  A private graveside service will be held at
 Highland Cemetery in Minneapolis, Kansas at a later date.

Eileen M. (Wagoner) Nondorf, 90, died at the Parkview Care Center in 
Osborne, Kansas on Monday, August 3, 2020.  

Eileen was born March 20, 
1930, the daughter of Ed and Katherine (Schwartz ) Wagoner. Eileen’s 
parents were lifelong farmers in Western Kansas. Eileen graduated from 
Sheridan County High School with the class of 1948. She married Joseph 
Nondorf on February 9, 1949 at the St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, 
Hoxie, Kansas.
 Eileen was a lifelong resident of Hoxie and owner of the Creative 
Crafts Store for many years. She was an expert seamstress and won many 
ribbons for her knitting, crocheting, and embroidery projects. She won a
 Kansas State Fair Ribbon for 1st place for a knitted afghan.
 Eileen is survived by her sister, Doreen Kennedy of Hoxie, Kansas; 
son, William Nondorf and wife Shelley of Hoxie, Kansas; daughter, Joleen
 McCombe of Hoxie, Kansas,; Granddaughter, Samatha Thibodeau of 
Lawrence, Kansas; Grandson, Cole Nondorf and wife Allison of Hoxie, 
Kansas; great-granddaughter, Kenzie Nondorf of Hoxie; great-grandson, 
Kooper Nondorf of Hoxie; and great-granddaughter, Ave Thibodeau of

Wilbur Perry Cotten, 99, died August 4, 2020, at Medicalodges, Great 
Bend, Kansas. 

He was born April 3, 1921, in Woodston, Kansas, the son of
 Perry J. and Blanche A. (Dibble) Cotten. Wilbur graduated from Woodston
 High School in 1938. He was a WWII veteran, serving as a Staff Sergeant
 in the Army Air Corp from 1942 to 1946.

On June 21, 1947, he married Phoebe Joyce Benedick in Stockton, 
Kansas. She preceded him in death on January 10, 1977. He then married 
Marjorie Duncan in 1979 and they later divorced.

A longtime Hoisington resident, Wilbur was a tool pusher in the oil 
field. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, of Osborne, Kansas. Wilbur 
was a fan of the Chiefs, Royals, and Jayhawks, but especially loved 
attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.

Survivors include; four children, Janet Dayton and husband Bill of 
Great Bend, Joe Cotten and wife Ginger of Hoisington, Jeff Cotten and 
wife Tammy of Susank, and Jodi Snyder of Rosamond, California; 9 
grandchildren; Patrick Corcoran and wife Trish of Wichita, Aaron 
Corcoran and wife Jessica of Great Bend, Micah Cotten and wife Tiffany 
of Godley, Texas, Sarah Simic and husband Milan of Hoisington, Rebekah 
Ohlde and husband Tim of Salina, Joey Cotten and wife Kara of 
Hoisington, Dustin Marsh and wife Morgan and Daniel Marsh, all of 
Wichita, and Braydon Snyder of Rosamund, California; and 13 great 
grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; daughter, Jennifer Marsh, 3 
infant brothers and sisters, and two sisters, Doris Jean Hays and Eloise
 Miller.

Visitation will be Friday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m., Saturday, August 8, 2020, at 
Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, with Rev. Don Fisher presiding. Burial 
will follow in Hoisington Cemetery, with military honors conducted by 
McConnell Air Force Base Honor Guard.

Francis Dean “Frank” Mayers, 68, of Piedmont, Oklahoma passed on Friday, July 31, 2020, at his residence in Piedmont.

Frank was born August 26, 1951 in Beloit, Kansas.  He was the son of Virgil Charles and Helen Ann Pahls (Blado) Mayers.  He grew up in Beloit, Great Bend, Kansas and Wichita, Kansas and graduated from South High School in Wichita.

Frank served his country in the U.S. Navy for over eight years.  He proudly served on the U.S.S. Sea Wolf # 575, first nuclear submarine in the U.S. Navy.  After his tour of duty he returned to Great Bend.

Frank was united in marriage to Jolene Nuss on August 8, 1981 in Russell.  This union was blessed with two children, Tiffini and Randa.  They made their home in Great Bend and Piedmont, Oklahoma.

Frank was an Oilfield Open Hole Engineer or Logging and Perforating Engineer.  He started out working for Welex and then transferred to Halliburton, working there until 1999.  Then later in Oklahoma he worked at Computalog.  He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Great Bend.  He enjoyed playing cards and gambling, working and creating with wood and was an electric handyman.

Frank’s surviving family include his wife of 39 years, Jolene of the home; daughter, Randa Hessman (Ryan) of Lawrence, Kansas; brothers, Joe Mayers of Great Bend, Kansas and John Mayers (Marie) of Albert, Kansas; sisters, Virginia Ramey (Rex) of Great Bend, Kansas, Vivian Pavlacka of Great Bend, Kansas and Barbara File (Allen) of Beloit, Kansas; brother-in-law, Kenneth Nuss of Russell, Kansas; sister-in-law, Joetta Mai of Russell, Kansas; four grandchildren, Kashe, Dylon, Reuben and Phoebe; and three great grandchildren, Alexandria Blue, Kreed Asher and Kenley Marie.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Tiffini Rogg, brother Steven Mayers and nephew Adam Mayers.

Celebration of Frank’s Life will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, August 6, 2020 at St. John Lutheran Church.  Military Rites will be conducted by the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240.  A private burial of ashes will follow at a later date.  Visitation will be held from Noon to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, August 5, 2020 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell. Barbara Lee ( Whisler) Nimz, 95, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Monday, August 3, 2020, at the Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell.

Barbara was born December 8, 1924, in Trego County, Kansas.  The daughter of Dewey G., Sr. and Esther M. (Vincent) Whisler.  She grew up in WaKeeney, Kansas and graduated from Trego Community High School in the Class of 1942.

Barbara was united in marriage to Fred Glen Nimz on February 21, 1960, in Abeline, Kansas.  This union was blessed with three children; Timothy, Linda and David.  They made their home in Healy, Kansas where Barbara was the Secretary of the Healy High School.  She also was the City Librarian for many years.  They then moved to Grainfield, Kansas living there from 1961 to 1971.  In 2003, they moved to Russell.  Fred preceded her in death on March 2, 2016.  Barbara was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church of Russell.  She also belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star in Grainfield.  She enjoyed reading, watching Kansas University Basketball games and doing cross word puzzles.  The most important things in her life were her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Barbara’s surviving family include her daughter, Linda Bealby (Brad) of Woodland Park, Colorado; two sons, Timothy Nimz (Kathy) of Littleton, Colorado and David Nimz (Nancy) of Dallas, Texas; sister, Carol Perrin of Tampa, Florida; six grandchildren, Ashley, Drew, Hannah, Mark, Brandon and Brittany; and 19 great grandchildren.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, husband Fred Glen Nimz and two brothers, Dewey Whisler, Jr. and Francis Whisler.

Kathleen Anne (Kowalke) Foster, 52, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2020, at her home in Russell.

Kathleen was born October 6, 1967, in Colby, Kansas.  She was the daughter of Herman, Sr. and Margaret Anne (McGee) Kowalke.  She grew up in Densmore and Logan, Kansas, and graduated from Hill City High School.  She then attended Colby Community College and obtained an Associate’s Degree in Nursing.

Kathleen was united in marriage to Kent Alan Foster on April 21, 2006, in Laughlin, Nevada.  They made their home in Russell.

Kathleen was a Sales Clerk of Liquor Station in Russell.  She was an Assistant Manager for Dollar General for many years.  Before that, she worked on the assembly line at King Of The Road.  She enjoyed drawing, coloring, spoiling her cats, feeding the neighborhood squirrels, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Kathleen’s surviving family include her husband of fourteen years Kent of the home; son, Anthony Corbin (Terri) of Hill City, Kansas; daughters, Jessica Harenberg (Josh) of Goodland, Kansas and Allison Corbin (Robert Schnug) of Goodland, Kansas; step-sons, Brent “B.S.” Foster (Keri) of Mesa Arizona and Tyler Drake of Clinton, Missouri; brothers, Herman Kowalke, Jr. of Hill City, Kansas, Virgil Wilcox, Jr. of Hays, Kansas and Darold Kowalke of Laughlin, Oklahoma; sisters, Kandy Worcester of Hill City, Kansas and Peggy Myers of Norton, Kansas; and eight grandchildren.

Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents and brother Harold Kowalke.

Marvin “Dale” Cole, age 85, of Ulysses, Kansas, passed away on August 2,
 2020, surrounded by his family, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s 
disease. 
Dale was born on January 13, 1935, in Lindsay, Oklahoma to Doc and 
Lillie (Griffin) Cole. His stories of playing basketball, working broom 
corn, frailing pecans and growing up in a large family of 10 children on
 the farm in Southern Oklahoma provided his family many hours of 
entertainment and laughter. Dale graduated from Pernell High School in 
1953 and attended East Central State University in Ada, OK.

In 1956, he 
married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Ann Jones. After graduating 
from college, Dale taught in Ness City, Kansas, for three years before 
earning his Master’s degree from Oklahoma State University in 1960. 
Dale and Shirley moved to Ulysses, Kansas, in August 1959. Dale embarked
 on a long tenure at Ulysses High School, teaching science and coaching 
basketball and tennis. He absolutely loved teaching and took great 
pleasure in sharing stories from the classroom with his family. As the 
years went on, he considered encounters with his former students the 
greatest treats. His passion for educating didn’t stop at the doors of 
the classroom but continued in his home where he loved to “teach” his 
kids and grandkids. An avid fisherman and gardener, he enjoyed camping, 
playing cards, and family reunions. He was also the greatest fan of the 
sports and activities of his children and grandchildren. He was a 
60-year member of Lions Club International and a long-time member and 
deacon of First Baptist Church of Ulysses, Kansas. 
He was welcomed to his home in Heaven by his parents, stepmother Edie 
Cole; brothers, Dennis Cole, Dugie Cole, Darrel Cole, and Dan Cole; and 
sister-in-laws Sylvia Cole and June Cole. 
Dale is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Shirley Cole of 
Ulysses, KS; son, Mike Cole of Pampa, TX; daughters, Melisa Westerman 
(Mel) of Liberal, KS, and Cathy Frank (Dustin) of Omaha, NE; grandkids, 
Tyler Westerman (Kassi) of Snyder, TX; Taryn Dinh of Liberal, KS; Nicki 
Cole of Pampa, TX; Ashlyn Wayman (Tyler) of Collinsville, OK; Cody Cole

Marvin 'Dale' Cole

Salena S. Nichols, age 99, passed away on Sunday, August 2, 2020, at the Bethel Home in Montezuma, Kansas. 

 She was born on June 12, 1921, in Halstead, Kansas, the daughter of Peter A. and Susanna Nightengale Johnson.  Salena was a resident of Pence, Kansas from 1954 until 2011 when she moved to El Campo, Texas, and then to Bethel Home in Montezuma, Kansas, in 2016.

She was a member of the Scott Mennonite Church in Pence, Kansas.

On April 18, 1954, she married Ervin F. Nichols in Fairview, Oklahoma. He passed away on April 11, 1998.

Survivors include her son, Patrick, and Irma of El Campo, Texas, her daughter, Angela Nichols of Scott City, Kansas; two grandsons and six great-grandchildren.  

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter-in-law, one sister, two brothers, thirteen brothers-in-law, and twelve sisters-in-law

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 6, 2020, at the Scott Mennonite Church Cemetery in Pence, Kansas.

William &amp; Norma J. (Shull) Johnson in Marysville, KS. &nbsp;Patrick was 
one of several children.

Patrick graduated from high school and went to Vo-tech in Beloit for 1
 year. &nbsp;He was a Veteran of the U. S. Army, and&nbsp;served in Iraq during 
the Gulf War as a Staff Sergeant.

Patrick has been a long haul truck driver and recently a forklift operator at ElDorado in Salina, KS.

Patrick was&nbsp;preceded in death by his father, Edward in 1968.

Patrick is survived by his mother, Norma Johnson of Osborne, KS; 2

Melvin "Mel" Smalberger was born on July 2, 1932 to Glenn and Arvilla 
Smalberger in Oberlin, Kansas. He passed away July 31, 2020 at the age 
of 88 at the Good Samaritan Society of Decatur County. Melvin attended 
grade school at the Sherman School. He lived at home and helped with the
 country chores and farming. Later he moved out of the family home and 
started farming on his own. After retiring he moved to Oberlin. Melvin
 was a member of the Sherman Chapel Church and then after he retired 
from farming, he joined the Prairie Chapel Church until it closed. After
 the church closed, he attended the Oberlin United Methodist Church 
until his passing. He enjoyed gardening, cooking, family, and friends.
 Melvin was one of 12 children. He was preceded in death by his 
parents, Glenn and Arvilla Smalberger; brothers: Rex (Gladys) 
Smalberger, Lloyd Smalberger, Maynard Smalberger, Darl Smalberger, and 
Harold Smalberger; sisters: Arthea Smalberger, Beluah (Earl) Lawver, 
Ella Mae Wahrman, Margie (Loren) Welsh, and Donna Lee Smalberger and 
sister-in-law, Shirley Smalberger. He is survived by his brother, 
Richard of Beaverton Oregon, and brother-in-law, Bill Wahrman of 
Strasburg, Colorado and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. He will
 be missed by all.
 Graveside services will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, August 7, 2020 at

Melvin ‘Mel’ Smalberger

Longtime Goodland, KS resident Jimmie "Jim" Lee Applebee, 85, passed
 away on Saturday, July 25, 2020 at the Topside Manor in Goodland.&nbsp; He 
was born on November 14, 1934 in Glen Elder, KS to Vinton (Shorty) and 
Ida (Lundy) Applebee.

Jim attended school in Glen Elder, graduating with the class of 
1952.&nbsp; He attended Ft. Hays State his freshman year.&nbsp; Because he was at 
the top of the draft list, he sat out of school until January of 1955.&nbsp; 
He entered the Army during that time, and was stationed at Fort Orad, 
California and Fort Lewis, Washington.&nbsp; He spent 2 years in the Army 
Infantry and the 5 more years in the Army Reserves, and was discharged 
in 1962.

While being stationed at Ft. Lewis, Jim played football on the 9th 
Infantry Regiment team.&nbsp; After the service, he returned to school at 
Emporia State and graduated there in 1960, with a Bachelor of Science 
Degree.&nbsp; During the summer of 1970, he received his Masters of Science 
Degree from Ft. Hays State.&nbsp; While in College, Jim played football for 
both Emporia State and Ft. Hays State.&nbsp; Following his college career, 
Jim taught school and coached at Valley Falls, Sabetha, Ellis, Smith 
Center and Goodland.&nbsp; In 1994, Jim was inducted into the Ellis Teachers 
Hall of Fame.&nbsp; During that same year, Jim was awarded for Youth Service 
from the Goodland Chamber of Commerce.

On May 31, 1959, Jim married Marlene Michels at the Methodist Church 
in Hunter, KS.&nbsp; To this union, three daughters; Glenda, DeAnn and Susan 
were born.

Jim was a strict, but loving dad and family man.&nbsp; He loved to see his
 daughters together telling stories and hearing them laugh.&nbsp; His 
favorite family times were Thanksgiving, Christmas, Birthdays and the 
4th of July.&nbsp; He looked forward to buying fireworks for the grandkids, 
having a BBQ and always having homemade ice cream.

He worked at J&amp;J Feeders for several years.&nbsp; Also, he enjoyed 
driving a truck for Short and Sons now and then.&nbsp; He and Dick had some 
fun stories to tell.

Jim owned a golf cart business for 25 years until his health began to
 fail.&nbsp; He was an avid golfer.&nbsp; He enjoyed all sports and loved 
attending his Grandkids ballgames.&nbsp;

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Goodland, the
 Goodland Elks Lodge, Phi Sigma Epsilon Fraternity and a past member of 
the Sugar Hill Golf Club.

Preceding him in death were his parents, one brother Vinton Jr., and an infant granddaughter Lisa Marie Dwyer.

He is survived by his wife Marlene of the home in Goodland, three 
daughters; Glenda (Dale) Dwyer of Cheyenne Wells, Colorado, DeAnn 
(Marlin) Hillmer of Goodland, KS, and Susan (Kevin) Schmidt of Brewster,
 KS.&nbsp; He is also survived by Eight Grandchildren; James (Sara) Dwyer, 
Hillary Dwyer (Tyson Frihauf), Tyler (Andrea) Hillmer, Angela (Corbin) 
Townsend, Ryan Hillmer, Jaden, Carson and Kamdyn Schmidt; two step 
granddaughters; Sally (Matt) Lahm and Lori (Craig) Rosales, nine great 
grandchildren and 8 step great grandchildren.

Jimmie 'Jim' Lee Applebee

Cordella Mae "Dell" Thrasher, age 99, of Oakley, passed away on August 
1, 2020 at the Logan County Hospital in Oakley.&nbsp; Dell was born May 9, 
1921 on a farm near Glasco, KS to Cora and Oren Rogers.&nbsp; She was the 7th child. She
 attended country school and high school at Glasco.&nbsp; Dell loved her 
horses and dogs. &nbsp;When she was little, she rode her horse Trixie to 
school every day to a country school, from 1st grade to 6th
 grade.&nbsp; On December 24, 1939, she married Roy P. Thrasher at Hill City,
 KS.&nbsp; To this union three children were born:&nbsp; Brenda Jean, Thomas 
Edward, and Terry Lee.&nbsp; Their first home was in Glasco where Roy was 
employed by the natural gas pipeline.&nbsp; In March, 1946, they moved to a 
farm near Page City where they lived until October, 1982; when Roy and 
Dell moved to Oakley. Dell loved to go to the Sun Shine Club 
there in Page City.&nbsp; She loved her music.&nbsp; She played the radio all day 
long as she worked around the house.&nbsp; She loved to bake and paint, and 
was a great artist and making quilts. &nbsp;Dell she made a quilt for 
everyone in the family, plus her grandchildren.&nbsp; She was member of the 
Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, Post 2811, and worked on 
quilts that were sold by the Auxiliary for Christmas.&nbsp; She also baked 
many pies for funeral dinners for the last 20 years. She was 
preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers: &nbsp;George H. Rogers and 
“Onie” Rogers, 4 sisters:&nbsp; Alma Williams, Mary Jones, Nellie Tubeck and 
Clara Brown, and son-in-law, Darryl Cooper. Survivors include her
 daughter, Brenda Schertz Cooper of Oakley, her sons: &nbsp;Tom Thrasher and 
Terry Thrasher of Oakley, and 9 grandchildren:&nbsp; Greg Cooper and wife

Cordella Mae 'Dell' Thrasher

Ollie May Friesen, 83, of Russell, Kansas, died on Saturday, August 01, 2020, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Ollie was born on November 21, 1936, in Gray, Oklahoma, the daughter of Frank and Belle (Vance) Leatherman.  She grew up in the Balko and Gray, Oklahoma areas and graduated from Balko High School in the class of 1955.  She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Henry “Hank” Reimer Friesen on August 26, 1961, in Perryton, Texas.  From this union Ollie and Henry were blessed with four children:  Alice, Diana, Gordon and Carol.  She worked as a waitress but the most important job to her was being wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker to her growing family.  She was a longtime member of the Church of Christ.  She was also a member of Boyd Quilting Club and T.O.P.S.  She enjoyed sewing, embroidering, quilting, cooking and gardening.  She most enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Surviving family include her daughter Alice Huff and husband Danny of Miami, Texas, Diana Riedel and husband Patrick of Russell, Kansas, son Gordon Friesen and wife Tricia of Salina, Kansas and Carol Wykoff and husband Richard of Russell, Kansas; sister Eva Cowan of Perryton, Texas; grandkids Ashley Boyd, Amber Bradshaw, Jarred Riedel, Andrew Friesen and Laura Friesen; great grandchildren Averi, Addison and Ainsleigh Boyd, Wyhatte and Hunter Friesen; sisters in-law Doris Leatherman and Frankie Leatherman and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Henry on February 14, 2008, 4 brothers True, Lester, Kenneth, and Paul Leatherman, 2 sisters Cora Leatherman and Joy LaTour and a grandson Jonathan Friesen. 

A celebration of Ollie’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, August 07, 2020, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas.  Burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery in Russell, Kansas.  Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Thursday, August 06, 2020, with family greeting guests from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. Thursday evening at the mortuary. 

 Memorials may be given to the Ollie Friesen Memorial Fund and sent in care of the mortuary.  Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

David Allen John Rogers, age 40 of Stockton, Kansas, passed away on July
 31, 2020 from a tragic, small craft mid-air collision in Soldotna, 
Alaska. He was born on January 10, 1980, in Denver, Colorado. He was 
raised by his mother Renee (Hollingsworth) Rogers and husband Nick. On 
February 14, 2002, he was united in marriage to his high school 
sweetheart, Rhonda Hebert in Golden, Colorado. They were blessed with 
three children, Madison, Ben, and Troy.
 David grew up in Denver and graduated from Bear Creek High School 
with the Class of 1998. After graduation David immediately entered the 
workforce. For several years he did various jobs in pipefitting, 
carpentry, hardwood flooring, installing windows with Uncle Brent, and 
washing semis with Grandpa Lloyd. He liked traveling with Grandma Ruby 
and Grandpa Lloyd, and developed a deep passion for the outdoors, 
especially hunting, camping, and fishing. He made up his mind early on, 
that somehow, someway, he was going to be a professional wilderness 
guide.
 That dream became a reality when David moved his family to Stockton.
 During the Summer months, he spent his days leading adventures on the 
Alaskan frontier, and would then return home to do the same in Rooks 
County, and surrounding areas, the rest of the year, through his own 
hunting guide business, “Beyond The Bend.” He chose that name because 
true to his adventurous spirit, he always knew there was something 
amazing, wonderful, and surprising just waiting for him and his fearless
 compadres, over, around, or beyond the next bend of whatever river, 
road, or trail they were traveling.
 David had a sense of humor that was all his own. His infectious 
smile and use of clever sayings, known as “Davisms,” like “you get what 
you go get” could always put friends, family, and strangers at ease, 
even if there was a little tension in the air between folks. It didn’t 
matter who you were, when you heard him say, “We came here to kick ass 
and chew bubble gum! And we’re all out of bubble gum!” well, all you 
could do was laugh, shake your head in agreement, and get on with 
gettin’ along.
 Unapologetic for being himself, he didn’t embarrass easily, if at 
all. If his clothes didn’t match, so what? If he had a tough day in the 
fields and came home with half a shirt and most of his sock material 
missing, who cares? And if he was driving, swerving on the road, looking
 for deer, turkeys, or sheds, you’d best just stay out of his way, or 
hold on for dear life if you were riding with him. Although his mom 
always told him to be, “Less like a rocket ship and more like a 
balloon,” having that Rogers’ stubborn streak, and one-track mind, he 
didn’t always heed that advice real close.
 With all of his million-dollar ideas, like seasoned shotgun shells, 
David had his own unique flair in the culinary department as well. First
 of all, butter is not just an occasional condiment, it is a food group 
unto itself that goes on everything. Second, the best treat while 
traveling the frozen tundra of Alaska, is a PBJ Smoothie, nothing else 
will do. And finally, all we really know about the Coffee Bomb, is that
 you take unspecified portions of coffee, hot chocolate, and heavy 
whipping cream, then add a ridiculous amount of butter with a dash of 
cinnamon, and then, well, there you have it. Probably called the Bomb 
because it would simply take out the average coffee drinker. It is 
definitely not for lightweights. Which would explain the huge amount of 
adrenaline, buzz, and excitement, as he loudly and proudly proclaim at 
the beginning of each hunting excursion, “Let’s go get our asses 
kicked!”
 Never one to shy away from saying, “I love you,” David was a devoted
 family man, husband, and father. He was an early morning guy, so, when 
he got up, it was time for everyone to be up. Although, at times, family
 came dragging out of bed, they knew the day was always going to be full
 of fun and good times. A devoted TikTok-er, well, really an obsessed 
addict, he spent hours sharing clips and videos with his kids, laughing 
and carrying on, in their own little world of sheer joy and hilarity. 
And, if he started to take off his socks, look out, because somebody was
 getting hit!
 An avid sports fan, especially when his kids were playing, David was
 the quintessential sideline coach for every kid, no matter the sport. 
Always encouraging them, he strived to help them be their best at 
everything, and often reminded them, “If you can’t see yourself making 
it, you won’t.” Supplied with popcorn, water, and Snickers bars at every
 game, he made sure that winning was a joyous yet humble celebration, 
and losing was just another step forward with a lesson on how to do 
better next time.
 Left to mourn David’s untimely passing are his wife, Rhonda of the 
home in Stockton; his children, Madison of Topeka, and Ben and Troy 
Rogers of Stockton; mother Renee Rogers of Hays, KS; father Nick Rogers 
of Littleton, CO; sister, Hollie Aukland and husband Craig of Littleton,
 CO; brothers, Ty Rogers of Brooklyn, NY, and Christopher Rogers of

parents-in-law, Joe and Sue Hebert of Denver, CO; sisters and

Aukland, Ayden and Avery Fearn, and Cheyenne, Colton, and Tucker

 Preceding David in death are his grandparents Lloyd and Ruby Hollingsworth; Mike Graham; and Michelle Hollingsworth.
 The Word of God instructs us, “Ask the animals, and they will teach 
you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the 
earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. 
Which of all these does not know what the hand of the Lord has done? In 
his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.” 
David was a man of deep and growing faith. Although he did not realize 
it when he began, the more time he spent in the whole of God’s creation,
 day by day, closer and closer, the Lord was gently drawing him to 
Himself. Drawing him into a deeper understanding of life and love, and 
what it means to be a man, not just within his own heart and soul, but 
in the hearts and souls of his family, friends, neighbors, and God. In 
the final moments of his life, we do not know exactly what happened, but
 one thing is certain, as David flew over the beautiful landscape of the
 Alaskan heartland, just above the breaking clouds, we hope he felt, in 
that moment, as if he could reach out and touch the very face of God. 
Then suddenly, in the twinkling of an eye, he did.

Richard L. Wyatt, 90, Gorham, died Sunday, August 2, 2020, at HaysMed.

He was born February 22, 1930, in Minneola, Kansas, the son of Joseph Luke and Lucille (Acerbi) Wyatt.&nbsp; He was a United States Air Force veteran and worked for 36 years at Stapleton International Airport in Denver as a flight simulator technician for United Airlines.&nbsp; 

On August 13, 1954, he was united in marriage to Charlotte Ann Gates in Hastings, Nebraska, and they celebrated 65 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on September 6, 2019.&nbsp; Richard was on the Gorham Township Board, enjoyed tinkering, building and fixing clocks and model airplanes, and used his ingenuity to build, fix, and repair everything himself.&nbsp; He enjoyed his time at home, would help anybody in true neighborly fashion, welcomed everybody as if they were family, and enjoyed attending his great grandchildren’s birthday parties. &nbsp;

Survivors include two daughters; Nancy Seitz of Gorham and Terri Wyatt of Liebenthal, several half-siblings, 14 grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; Ann, two sons; Timothy and Ronald Wyatt, a sister; JoAnne, and several half-siblings.

Private family inurnment will be in Winterset Cemetery south of Gorham.&nbsp; Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association, in care of Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.&nbsp; Condolences and memories of Richard may be shared with the family at www.haysmemorial.com&nbsp;

Norton resident Greta Beth Fletchall passed away Saturday, August 1, 2020, in the Andbe Home in Norton at the age of 93.

Beth was born May 18, 1927, in Norton County, KS the daughter of Earl A. and Nola (Stevens) Tibbetts.

Beth was united in marriage to Larry Dean Fletchall on February 14, 1973.&nbsp; Larry preceded her in death on October 2, 2019.

Survivors include a sister Dawn Bevill and brother Merril Tibbetts, both of Norton.

Graveside services honoring both, Beth and Larry, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 5, 2020, in the Norton Cemetery, Norton.&nbsp;
