Willis Earl Crabtree, 91, of Brewster, died Friday, June 26, 2020, at 
Colby Health and Rehab. He was born August 23, 1928, in Utica, KS, to 
Roy and Gertrude (Jacka) Crabtree. 

Willis graduated from Utica High 
School in 1946 and then attended college at Fort Hays State University, 
receiving his bachelor’s degree. He taught at Beeler, KS for one 
semester before joining the United States Army, serving from 1951 to 
1953. After returning from the service he returned to Fort Hays to 
complete his master’s degree. In the Fall of 1954, 

Willis moved to 
Brewster, KS, to start a long career in education, teaching math, 
science and technology. Willis’ teaching career spanned over 50 years at
 Brewster USD 314 and 12 years at Rexford USD 316. Willis was a pioneer 
in bringing technology to Brewster School and continued his love of 
learning while implementing computer education. While at Brewster, he 
met Joyce Randel, a fellow teacher, and they were married on December 
28, 1958. The couple had three daughters and enjoyed 61 years of 
marriage. Willis was a member of the Brewster Lion’s Club, Utica 
American Legion, MACE (Mid-America Association for Computers in 
Education) and NEA (National Education Association). 
Willis was preceded in death by his parents; brother Roy LaFaun Crabtree and son-in-law Charles Chipps. 
He is survived by his wife, Joyce, of Brewster; children, Bonnie (Shane)
 Holm, of Brewster, Mary Crabtree, of Wooster, OH and Tanya (Rick) 
Szanto, Goodland, KS; sister, Marie Babcock, of Cimarron, KS; 8 
grandchildren, Shanda (Chris) Wagner, Jeremy (Angel) Holm, Spencer Holm,
 Tad Holm, Taylor Ditmars, Whitney Ditmars, Bryan (Shonna) Gray and Jed 
Gray and 15 great-grandchildren. 
Visitation is 5:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 2, 2020 at Baalmann 
Mortuary, Colby. Funeral Service is 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 3, 2020, at 
the Brewster High School, with burial in the Utica Cemetery at 3 p.m.

Gerald Wayne Stoppel, 77, of Russell, Kansas, died on Monday, June 29, 2020, at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas.

Gerald was born on April 14, 1943, in Bunker Hill, Kansas, the son of Edward and Emelia (Heinze) Stoppel.  He grew up on the family farm in Bunker Hill, Kansas in Russell County.  He graduated from Dorrance High School and attended Ft. Hays State University.  He worked on the production line with King of the Road in Russell and for many years worked as a custodian for USD 407.  He was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church in Russell and enjoyed working with the Russell Food bank.  He enjoyed walking his dog Sammy, Kansas University Basketball, listening to country music and insisted on picking up the check for dinner.  He also loved small children and dogs and they loved him.

Surviving family include his sister La Dora M. Meier of Wichita, Kansas; brother in-law Glenn Meier of Wichita, Kansas; sister in-law Janice E. Stoppel of Russell, Kansas; 8 nephews; 1 niece and his beloved dog Sammy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Junior D. Stoppel and Bennie D. Stoppel.

A graveside service to celebrate Gerald’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, July 03, 2020, at the Dorrance City Cemetery with Pastor Roger Dennis officiating with burial following.  Viewing and visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Thursday, July 02, 2020, at the mortuary with family greeting guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Thursday evening. Alvin LeRoy Volk, 92, of Colby, died Saturday, June 27, 2020 at Prairie 
Senior Living Complex. 

He was born September 19, 1927, in Campbell, NE, 
to Albert and Louise (Niederklein) Volk. Alvin completed the 8th grade, 
in Franklin, NE and was drafted in to the United States Army in 1946, 
serving 1 year in Korea. Alvin’s first job was working for his uncle 
Julius, in Monument, KS. He then went to work in Colorado for the Works 
Progress Administration and worked on the railroad until they found out 
he was color blind. Alvin then began working at the City of Colby’s 
power plant and in 1957, started his career at the Post Office. He 
worked there for 31 years, before retiring on November 28, 1987. 

Alvin 
married Neva Lois Lyon on July 30, 1954, in Colby, and to this union 
four children were born. When Colby Community College began their GED 
Certificate program Alvin was among the first to sign up and he received
 his GED in 1969. 
Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; wife Neva; son David Volk and daughter-in-law Janice Volk. 
He is survived by his children, Leon (Mary) Volk, of Goodland, KS, 
Martin Volk, of El Dorado Hills, CA and Lora Volk, of Colby; 
daughter-in-law Denise Volk, of Colorado Springs, CO; five 
grandchildren, Joshua (Lexi) Volk, of Garden City, KS, Kinsey Volk and 
Ryan Volk, of Goodland, KS, Kim Wright, of Scott City, KS and Wendi 
Richardson, of Colorado Springs, CO along with four great-grandchildren.

Mandi Lou Henson, 31, passed away June 28, 2020, at the University of
 Kansas Health System – Great Bend Campus. She was born December 9, 
1988, at Pratt, to Leatrice Ann Henson.

Coming from Kerrville, Texas in 2004, Mandi was a Great Bend 
resident. She loved singing, pranking people and looking at Christmas 
lights. She especially loved her singing hippopotamus.

Survivors include, her mother, Leatrice Christie, her grandmother, 
Alice Martin, her brother Kenneth Martin, and sister, Kyla Martin, all 
of Great Bend; as well as many uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 1, 
2020, at Bryant Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 
a.m., Thursday, July 2, 2020, at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Great Bend,

Former Phillipsburg resident Naomi Tuxhorn passed away June 28, 
2020, at the Via Christi Broadmoor assisted living in Wichita at the age 
of 90.&nbsp; She was born March 9, 1930, in Phillips County, KS, the daughter 
of Ernest &amp; Jennie (Lanman) Bugbee.

Survivors include her daughters; Charlene Clark of Kechi, KS &amp; 
Marcia Strutt of McPherson, KS; 6 grandchildren &amp; 9 great 
grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 2, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. in
 the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Dan Klinger 
officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery.

Marguerite Elaine Irby, 92, died June 25, 2020, in Liberal, Kansas. 
She was born to Melvin and Barbara (Rudman) Kenyon, June 16, 1928 in 
Bogue, Kansas. Growing up in Bogue, she and her sister Jean were 
surrounded by many friends and relatives. She graduated from Bogue High 
School in 1945. 
 She met and fell in love with Robert Ara Irby, and soon the two were
 married. They repeated their vows before a Justice of the Peace at Hill
 City, July 18, 1945. This marriage lasted until Robert passed away in 
January 2001.
 Early in their marriage she and Robert lived in Houston, Texas, 
while Robert was in the military. They moved to Bogue in 1945 and 
Liberal in 1966. They returned to Bogue in 1986. Several years after 
Robert’s death, she moved back to Liberal.
 While in Houston and Bogue, Marguerite provided a babysitting 
service. While living in Liberal, she worked in high school cafeteria. 
Soon after returning to Bogue, she worked 20 years at the Dawson Place 
Nursing Home in Hill City. 
 Music of any kind was an important part of Marguerite’s life. She 
sang alto with her favorite song being “Victory in Jesus”. Playing cards
 with family and friends was great entertainment, her specialty being 
pinochle. Watching KU basketball with Robert was a special joy as well.
 Marguerite was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the 
United Methodist Church where she always took an active part in UMW and 
Service Club. The Bogue Ladies TPM Club was rarely missed by her.
 She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Robert and sister Jean Venich.
 Left to mourn her passing are her three sons: Layton of Wichita, 
Richard (Debbie) of Valley Center, Bret (Elizabeth) of Liberal; two 
daughters: Judith Day of Franklin, Tennessee and Pamela (Gary) Bird of 
Patoka, Illinois; 12 grandchildren: Mitchell Irby (Andrea) of Lawrence, 
Rebecca Irby of Liberal, Jennifer (Zac) Masters of Franklin, Tennessee, 
Jana (Sam) Inman of Lewisburg, Tennessee, Brian (Julie) Bird of Makanda,
 Illinois, Shelli (Rick) Hubler of Salem, Illinois, Matthew Irby of 
Emporia, Tamara (David) LeMonnier of Andover; Douglas (Christin) Irby of
 Bel Aire, Bobby Irby, Johnny Irby and Donny Irby all of Louisiana; 18

Marguerite Elaine Irby

Richard Dexter "Dick" Boyd, son of Frank W. "Bus" and Mary Folwell (Dexter) Boyd, was born December 12, 1936, in Concordia, Kansas, and passed away at 12 noon on June 25, 2020, at the Kearney Regional Medical Center in Kearney, Nebraska, at the age of 83.

Dick grew up in Mankato, Kansas, where his family owned and published the Jewell County Record.&nbsp; He graduated from Mankato High School with the class of 1955 and was then offered a full-ride scholarship to play football for Kansas State University.&nbsp; While at K-State, Dick was a two-year letterman in football and was voted the Most Inspirational Player by his football teammates.&nbsp; He was also a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity and Army ROTC.

He graduated with a degree in technical journalism in 1959. &nbsp; Following his graduation, Dick married the love of his life, Mary Beth Brooks, on August 15, 1959, in Concordia, Kansas.&nbsp; Dick entered the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant and was stationed at numerous bases including Fayetteville, North Carolina; Baltimore, Maryland; and Columbus, Georgia.&nbsp; During that time, Dick also realized his dream of coaching football.&nbsp; As head coach, Dick led the football team to a co-championship of the Fort Bragg League in 1961.

Following his discharge in 1962, Dick and Mary Beth moved to Phillipsburg, Kansas, where he worked for eight years at the Phillips County Review, the newspaper published by his uncle, McDill "Huck" Boyd.&nbsp; During his time employed at the Review, Dick served as advertising manager, reporter and photographer.&nbsp; Phillipsburg is also where Dick and Mary Beth started their family with the addition of their two children, Larry and Becky.

In 1970, Dick and Mary Beth purchased the Norton Daily Telegram and Wilson-Carter Printers, Inc., making their home in Norton, Kansas.&nbsp; Together, they were owners and publishers of the Telegram until they sold the newspaper in 2002.&nbsp; Dick continued as sportswriter, proofreader and performed other duties for another 18 years at the Norton Telegram.

Dick was an active member of the Norton First United Methodist Church and the Harmonson-Redd American Legion Post #63.&nbsp; He was president of the Norton Area Chamber of Commerce in 1974 and served on the Valley Hope Association board of directors from 1970-1976. Dick received an Honorary Chapter Degree from the Norton Future Farmers of American in 1974.

He was a member of the Norton Lion's Club for over 50 years and was also a past member of the Norton Rotary Club.

Dick was honored as the Tommy Davidson Blue Jay Booster of the year in 2001 and was the recipient of the Kansas State High School Activities Association Oscar Stauffer Award for Sports Writing in 2006.

The Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association selected Dick as Media Person of the Year in 1992, 2000 and 2009.

Dick was also involved with the Native Sons and Daughters of Kansas for a number of years, including serving on the board of officers.&nbsp; He was president in 2006.

Dick served his alma mater in another capacity after he was elected to the Kansas State Alumni Association board of directors.

Dick's interest in physical fitness led to him participating in the annual Biking Across Kansas event for 12 straight summers.&nbsp; The enthusiasm he demonstrated for this "summer camp on wheels" as he called it, was noticed, as in 1990 he was the BAK Spirit Award winner, being selected from among the hundreds of bicyclists who made the border-to-border trek.

For many years, Dick was a member of the selection committee for the Kansas Shrine Bowl All-Star Football Game.&nbsp; The Kansas Sports Hall of Fame was very important to Dick as he not only voted to select those who would be inducted, but he aggressively urged the Kansas Legislature to pass legislation to fund the continuation of its existence.

During his time with the Telegram, a number of organizations presented him with awards of appreciation for his support of their efforts.&nbsp; Among those would be the Norton County Conservation District, Norton County 4-H clubs, the Norton Fire Department, U.S. Jaycees, the Norton Future Farmers of America, USD 211, the Norton Area Chamber of Commerce, the Boot Hill All-Star Basketball Classic, and the Dane G. Hansen Memorial Museum Association.

Near the end of his life, Dick, along with his wife Mary Beth, were touched and honored to be the 2020 recipients of the Huck Boyd Award for Community Journalism.

Survivors include: his loving wife, Mary Beth Boyd, of their home in Norton; his son, Lawrence Alexander (Larry) Boyd, Colorado Springs, Colorado; his daughter, Rebecca Anne "Becky" Allen, London, England; his granddaughter, Emily Iris Allen, London; one sister, Elizabeth Boyd James, Bethesda, Maryland; one brother-in-law, Jim Logback, Hill City, Kansas; one sister-in-law, Diane Boyd, Hill City; two nephews and six nieces; other relatives and many friends.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, his parents-in-law, Lawrence and Anita Brooks, one sister, Frances (Boyd) Logback, and one brother, Robert A. "Bob" Boyd.

Clinton Wright.&nbsp; A lifetime resident of Scott City, Kansas, he was a car detailer at J&amp;R Car &amp; Truck in Scott City, Kansas. He was a 2013 Scott Community High School Graduate and was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; Mason had a love of fast cars and dirt bikes. Survivors include his Parents - Rodney &amp; Judith Wright of Scott City, Kansas, One Sister - Ericka &amp; Alan Collier of Kechi, Kansas, Grandparents - Wilbur &amp; Vicki Wright of Scott City, Kansas, and numerous Aunts, Uncles, Nieces and Nephews. Jill Schierling, 62, died June 21, 2020, at Wesley Medical Center in 
Wichita.  She was born February 22, 1958 in Phillipsburg, Kansas, to 
Jesse and Marietta (Cottrill) Westbrook.  She married Duane Schierling 
February 23, 1980, in Quinter, Kansas.  

Survivors include: son, Ryan 
(Mellissa) Schierling of Lehigh; daughters, Megan (Nick) Hein of rural 
Hillsboro, Melissa (Dustin) Enns of Lehigh; brother, Kerry Westbrook of 
Canadian, Texas; sisters, Marcheta Kay Perkins of Lakewood, Colorado, 
Doris Landree of Ironton, Minnesota, Patti Jo Elliott of Ozark, 
Missouri; 7 grandchildren. Predeceased by: husband, Duane Schierling in

 Jill Raye (Westbrook) Schierling was born in Phillipsburg, KS on 
February 22, 1958 to Marietta (Cottrill) Westbrook and Jesse Eugene 
Westbrook. She joined four older siblings at home, Marcheta Kaye, Doris 
Jean, Kerry Lee, and Patti Jo. She was a happy and joyful child growing 
up taking full advantage of the attention and love she received being 
the baby of the family. She admired and looked up to her brother and 
sisters. In 1962, her parents divorced while she was at the tender age 
of 4. Through this difficult time she became even closer with her 
siblings and especially her mom. 
 Jill moved many times while growing up, 14 to be exact. When 
speaking about her childhood this is often something she would talk 
about. In 1972, when in the 8th grade, Jill moved for a brief period to 
Richland, Washington with her mom. She occasionally spoke about her 
experience in the beautiful state and enjoyed visiting the ocean. She 
has many fond memories of those days. 
 In 1976, Jill graduated from Phillipsburg High School, in 
Phillipsburg, KS. She went on to attend Colby Community College and 
studied nursing earning her degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse in 
1977. She worked at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Hays, KS.
 In 1979 Jill met the love of her life while at a dance. After a 
short 3 month courtship, Jill married Duane Alan Schierling on February 
23, 1980 in Quinter, KS at the Church of the Brethren. They settled in 
their first home on the family farm in Quinter while Duane pursued his 
dream of a large hog operation. While on the farm in 1981, she became a 
mother for the first time- welcoming daughter Megan Marie. In 1982, Jill
 and Duane moved to Newton, KS and Jill’s desire to be a stay-at-home 
mom came to be. In 1984, she welcomed her second daughter, Melissa Kay, 
on December 14, 1984. Throughout her years in Newton she was an active 
member of the church and participated in many church activities, 
including being a Sunday School Teacher and introducing her children to 
the Lord’s Word. 
 In 1987, Jill suffered the loss of her father, Gene, and shortly 
after the loss of her mother, Marietta, in 1988. This proved to be a 
very challenging time in Jill’s life. She greatly missed her mom and 
often spoke of her longing to be with her. In 1989 Jill was blessed with
 her only son, Ryan Scott, on April 5. In 1991, Jill and Duane moved 
their family to Hillsboro, KS to bring their children up in a small, 
quiet rural town. 
 Jill enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom and keeping her home tidy, her
 hobbies included gardening, cross stitch, embroidery, sewing, 
crocheting, and fishing with the family. After her children were older, 
she went back to work as a CMA to assist the elderly in care. She loved 
sharing stories about her day at work and the joy it brought her. 
 In 2000, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and faced it bravely 
while completing treatment. Her breast cancer treatment ultimately 
caused her to have cardiomyopathy which resulted in congestive heart 
failure. Despite the discouraging news, we still celebrated her recovery
 as a breast cancer survivor! She remained an active part of her 
children and grandchildren’s lives and enjoyed going to their sports 
activities and programs. She brought a comical sense of humor to our 
family and always was the first to make a light hearted joke during a 
difficult time. 
 In 2009, her husband, Duane, predeceased her in death. This was 
another challenging time in Jill’s life and left her with many 
unanswered questions. But her faith and confidence in the Lord 
ultimately helped her through. 
 On June 13, 2020 she was admitted to Wesley Hospital with trouble 
breathing. She had struggled for the past year with maintaining her 
heart health. In an unfortunate turn of events, she needed surgery and 
her heart was not strong enough to withstand the stress if surgery 
should take place. On June 21, 2020 with her three children and sister 
Pat at her side holding her hand she took her last breath and left us to
 be with the Lord to have eternal life.
 Jill joins her husband-Duane, mom-Marietta, dad-Gene, nephew-Chad 
and grandparents in eternity. Those left to carry on her memory include 
Ryan (Mellissa) Schierling, Melissa (Dustin) Enns, Megan (Nick) Hein, 
Marcheta (Verlyn) Perkins, Doris (Dave) Landree, Kerry (Jo) Westbrook, 
Patti (John) Elliott, 7 cherished grandchildren, and many nieces and 
nephews.

Jill Schierling

Frederick Dean Kempke, 83, of Claflin, Kansas, died Saturday, June 
27, 2020, at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita, Kansas. He 
was born October 18, 1936, at Ellsworth, Kansas, the son of George 
Oakland and Rose Pauline (Schneider) Kempke.

Dean graduated from Holyrood High School in 1955. On October 29, 
1955, he married Janice I. Swalley in Holyrood, Kansas. She survives.

Dean spent his career working in the oilfield doing various jobs and 
retired from Harbison-Fisher after 22 years as a pump salesman. He was 
known by many as one of the best in the business. He was a member of 
Zion Lutheran Church in Claflin and served as a cook in the Army 
National Guard. He enjoyed tinkering with lawn mowers, keeping his yard 
mowed, cleaning his vehicles, making custom engraved limestone rocks and
 spending time with family, especially his grandchildren.

Other survivors include three sons: David Kempke and wife Denise of 
Claflin, KS, Randy Kempke of North Kansas City, MO, and Brad Kempke and 
wife Robin of Johnson, KS; a brother, Wayne Kempke and wife Carol of 
Hutchinson; 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sharon Kaye Schroeder.

Visitation will be Wednesday, July 1, 2020, from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00
 p.m. with family present from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Nicholson-Ricke 
Funeral Home in Hoisington, KS.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday, July 2, 2020, 
at Zion Lutheran Church in Claflin with Pastor Daniel Harders 
officiating. Interment will follow at Claflin Cemetery.

James Samuel Fritzler, 85, passed away on May 27, 2020 at Wesley 
Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas. He was born on November 16, 1934 in 
Ness City, Kansas, the son of Sam and Freda (Sauer) Fritzler.

Jim was a 1953 graduate of Ness City High School, a member of the 
United Methodist Church, Ness City, and a United States Army Veteran. 
After returning home in 1956 from service in Germany, Jim worked for his
 father at Fritzler’s IGA grocery store until he decided to pursue 
farming and ranching full time. On October 27, 1957, Jim married the 
love of his life, Ila Jones, in Ness City, Kansas and they were happily 
married for 62 years. Together they raised two sons and spent a lifetime
 supporting Ness County historic preservation, development and numerous 
activities.

A sincere man with firm beliefs, Jim was never idle and had a talent 
for cooking, gardening and storytelling. He found great joy in his 
family and strong faith as well as the many traditions he shared will be
 carried on for generations to come.

Jim is survived by his wife, Ila; sons, Paul Fritzler and his wife, 
Dianna (Parker, CO, and Kelly Fritzler and his wife, Laurie (Paonia, 
CO); sister, Betty Benson (San Antonio, TX); and three granddaughters, 
Haley Rabson, Lauren Fritzler, and Carsyn Fritzler. He was preceded in 
death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 3, 2020, 4:00 PM, at 
the United Methodist Church, Ness City, Kansas. Inurnment will 
immediately follow at the Ness City Cemetery. Friends may call

Vivian Goetz, 81, died Wednesday, June 24, 2020 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

She was born August 28, 1938 Gove County, Kansas the daughter of Adam
 Fred and Clara Marie (Ziegler) Selensky.&nbsp; She was a graduate of Park 
High School and attended Marymount College in Salina. &nbsp;On September 10, 
1957 she married Vern Goetz at Park, Kansas and they moved to Dodge City
 in 1970.&nbsp;

She was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Dodge 
City where she was a long time member of the church choir as well as 
other committees. She enjoyed quilting and spending time with family.

Survivors include: her husband of 62 years, Vern; their 7 children, 
Amy Goetz, Minneola, Stan and wife Suzi, Dodge City, Kenny and wife 
Sonya, Dodge City, Carrie Davenport and husband Jim, Dodge City, Ima 
Davidson and husband Doug, Cimarron, Nancy McElgunn and husband Brian,

Vivian Goetz

J.R. "Jake" Durham, son of Joe and Eva (Ragan) Durham, was born August 22, 1928, in Granite City, Illinois, and passed away in Norton, Kansas, on June 24, 2020, at the age of 91.

J.R. grew up in Granite City where he was very active in wrestling as a three-year-letterman, captain of the team and had two undefeated dual seasons.  Following high school, J.R. continued his wrestling career at Arkansas State University which was in its first year of a wrestling program.  J.R. lettered and was captain of the team all four years and was a two-time All American and National AAU Champion.  He also attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.  J.R. met his future wife, Ruth Anita Robinson, at Arkansas State where she was a co-ed and cheerleader.  They were married December 24, 1951, in Piggott, Arkansas.  J.R. enlisted in the U.S. Army where he spent 2½ years and served in Korea as a platoon leader with the famed 27th Infantry (Wolfhound) Regiment of the 25th division.    While in the army, J.R. was given the name "Jake" which stayed with him the rest of his life.   Following his discharge from the army where he obtained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, he continued his service in the Army Reserves and the Kansas National Guard, retiring after 29 years as a Lt. Colonel.  

Jake taught school in Piggott where he was the assistant high school football coach and junior high principal and teacher.  His plans were to get his Masters degree in school administration but a call from his college wrestling coach put him in touch with the principal of Norton Community High School.  Principal Gerald Travis offered Jake the job of wrestling coach and they moved to Norton in 1955.  Jake taught P.E., American History and Driver's Ed and also coached track teams but he is best known and loved for his years as the head wrestling coach where he led his teams to numerous championships and wins at the local, regional, and state levels.

Jake was also very active in the Norton community.  He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a member and past commander of the Post #63 Harmonson-Redd Amercian Legion, VFW, Chamber of Commerce, member and past president of the Lion's club and the men's and couple's bridge clubs.  Jake organized the Norton Veteran's Day parade for over 50 years and also started the Norton Little Kid's Wrestling program.

Survivors include:  his wife, Ruth Durham, Norton; two sons, Joseph (Sara) Durham, Cimarron, Kansas; James Durham, (friend, Sue Ann Stutheit,) Norton; one grandson, Jordan (Victoria) Durham, Mt. Dora, Florida; one great-grandson, Julian Michael Durham, Mt. Dora, Florida; one sister, Sarah Carver, Waterloo, Illinois; three sisters-in-law, Paula Hollis, Jonesboro, Arkansas; Judy Heaton Robinson, Springfield, Missouri; Amanda Dalton Lane, Germantown, Tennessee; six nieces and seven nephews; other relatives and many friends.

Mark Eugene Peterson, 59, passed away June 25, 2020, at Ellinwood 
District Hospital, Ellinwood. He was born July 13, 1960, at Wichita, to 
Edward N. &amp; Donna C. (Little) Peterson. He married Lisa Libby on 
January 24, 1997, at Las Vegas, Nevada. She survives.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Mark was the owner of Peterson 
Mechanical in Great Bend. He served on the board of directors of the 
Kansas Shrine Bowl for twelve years, and enjoyed KU sports and the 
Kansas City Chiefs. It is suggested that people wear KU blue or Chiefs 
red for the service.

Survivors include, his wife Lisa Peterson of the home; two daughters,
 Audra Cross of Great Bend, and Taylor Cornelson and husband Isaac of 
Oklahoma City, Okla.; one son Justin Peterson of Wichita; a brother, 
Edward H. Peterson of Wichita; and three grandchildren, Amaya Peterson, 
Mason Peterson, and Easton Peterson. He was preceded in death by his 
parents, Edward and Donna Peterson.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 30, 
2020, at Bryant Funeral Home. Graveside service will be held at 2:00

Nolen Gene Taton, 66, passed away June 24, 2020, at Hays Medical 
Center, Hays. He was born October 22, 1953, at Harper, to Olen &amp; 
Betty (Swingle) Taton. He married Cynthia Rice on December 28, 1973, at 
Stafford. They were married for 25 years.

Coming from St. John in 2017, Nolen was a Great Bend resident. He was
 the President and CEO of St. John National Bank for 30 plus years. He 
was a member of the Kansas Bankers Association and the Kansas State 
University Alumni. He was also a previous mayor of St. John. He enjoyed 
gardening, landscaping and spending time in Colorado. He especially 
enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include, two daughters, Emily Schroeder and husband Eric of
 Denver, Colo., and Stephanie Delaney and husband Jared of Ness City; 
his parents, Olen and Betty Taton; his companion and caregiver, Cynthia 
Rice; a sister, Linda McIntire and husband William of Argonia; four 
grandchildren, Keenan Schroeder, Zachary Schroeder, Clayton Delaney, and
 Carl Delaney; and friend and caregiver, Dan Shaffer. He was preceded in
 death by his daughter, Karlee Taton.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 30,

Robert Franklin Loper, age 90, died at his home on Thursday, June 25, 2020, in Garden City, Kansas.  He was born on May 22, 1930, in Norton, Kansas, the son of Ellis Paul Loper, Sr. and Mamie Evelyn Smith Loper.

He worked as a farmer, para professional, and was an ordained minister.  Robert was a member of the Turning Point Church of the Nazarene.

He served his country during the Korean War in the United States Army.

On January 5, 1951, he married to Marion Joyce Sooby.  She preceded him in death in 2006.  On July 14, 2007, he was married to Phyllis Vanmeter.  She preceded him in death in 2019.

Memorial services will be held on Monday, June 29, 2020 at the Turning Point Church of the Nazarene in Garden City, Kansas at 2:00 pm.

Robert Franklin Loper

Dusty Dee Baehler, age 56, of Sharon Springs, Kansas passed away 
Thursday, June 25, 2020 surrounded by his wife and kids. Dusty was born 
in Wallace County on January 31, 1964 to Harold and Betty (Vincent) 
Baehler. He grew up and attended school in Winona and Sharon Springs. He
 graduated from Wallace County High School in 1983. Then he went to Bud 
Beaston Horse Shoeing School in Sperry, Oklahoma. On June 4th, 1988 he 
married Christina Lacey in Sharon Springs, Kansas. They had two 
daughters, Michelle and Lacey.

Dusty worked many years as a rancher but his favorite job was being a
 ranch manager for Harold Rother Farms. He took pride in building his 
red cow herd for Shirley. Along with ranching, he enjoyed raising horses
 with his family and being a member of American Quarter Horse 
Association. He spent lots of time riding the horses he raised. 
Additionally, his passion of roping led him to being a member of the 
United States Team Roping Championships, World Series Team Roping 
Championship, and Kansas Pro Rodeo Association. Besides ranching and 
roping, Dusty could be found spending time telling jokes, telling 
stories, and being the life of the party with his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mom, Betty Baehler, his grandparents 
Hap and Mary Baehler, and his grandparents Vernon and Frances Vincent.

Dusty is survived by his wife, Chris; daughters Michelle (Kent) of 
Anselmo, Nebraska and Lacey (Gary) of Sharon Springs, Kansas; dad Harold
 of Sharon Springs, Kansas; brothers Vernon Lee (Tamara) of Moscow, 
Kansas, and Shawn (Janine) of Sharon Springs, Kansas; grandchildren 
Caitlin, Tyson, Kali, Kaycee, Karlee, Kyle and Bayler; and many other 
cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Patricia Ann Radke, 84, of Russell, Kansas, died on Wednesday, June 24, 2020, at Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell.

Patricia was born on November 27, 1935, in Wewoka, Oklahoma, the daughter of Cecil and Gertrude Lynch.  Her family moved around to several places but eventually made Russell, Kansas, her permanent home.  She graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1953.  After high school, she graduated from Ft. Hays State University with a degree in Business.  She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Vernon D. Radke on February 22, 1959, in Russell, at St. John Lutheran Church.  From this union Patricia and Vernon were blessed with 2 children Mark and Robyn.  With their love of children they also welcomed children from other countries as foreign exchange students.  She worked for Shields Oil Company as a secretary, City of Russell as assistant to the city manager, public TV station KOOD as assistant office manager and Buttons and Bows working as a preschool teacher’s assistant.  She was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church in Russell and was in the church altar guild and women in fellowship group.  She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Then later in life she loved coloring adult coloring books.

Surviving family include her son Mark Radke of Sterling, Kansas; daughter Robyn Williams of Russell, Kansas; 3 grandchildren Kelsey Shattuck (Jason), Cherish Richards and Christopher Radke and 4 great grandchildren; extended family Pilar Morales Villar, Hans Jochum and Kai Muller.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Caroline Coddington.

A graveside memorial service to celebrate Patricia’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, June 30, 2020, at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Russell, Kansas.  Cremation has been selected and burial of the ashes will follow the graveside service.  Visitation will be held from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Monday, June 29, 2020, at the mortuary with family greeting guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Monday evening. Galen Dale Olson of Weslaco, TX 
passed away after a courageous battle with a severe illness on Tuesday, 
May 5, 2020, at the age of 76. One of 4 children, Galen was born on 
February 4, 1944, in Quinter, KS to Egla Esther (Steinle) Olson and Dale
 Wayne Olson.&nbsp;

He married Twila Mae Fabian on August
 26, 1962 in the Presbyterian Church in WaKeeney, KS. They were married 
57 years and blessed with 3 children. In Galen’s work life, he wore many
 hats. In his early years, he was a lineman for Central KS Power and a 
volunteer fireman. He served on City Council from 1994-1999. Galen owned
 and operated many businesses including Olson Electric, Metal 
Contracting and Manufacturing, and Olson Realty and Auction. In his 
years before retirement, he was actively involved in remodeling, 
selling, and building homes and followed in his father and grandfather’s
 footsteps as an auctioneer. Although he retired with his wife, Twila, 
to Weslaco, Texas in 2011, Galen was born and raised in Western Kansas 
and spent the majority of his life there. He was a member of the Ogallah
 Christian Church in Ogallah, KS and enjoyed his time with the church. 
Galen was a great storyteller. He had a big heart which he generously 
shared with his children and grandchildren. He was devoted to his church
 family and friends. When the flooding hit Texas in June of 2018, it was
 said that he was the first one to arrive and the last one to leave when
 helping his neighbors and friends in his retirement community.&nbsp;

His family was his greatest love and 
he will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death 
by his parents, Dale and Egla Olson; 2 sisters Myrtis Marie Olson, and 
Twila (MarJean) Denchfield; and 1 brother, Robert (Bob) Olson. He is 
survived by his wife, Twila of Weslaco, TX; daughters, Tamera Roe (Jeff)

Galen Dale Olson

Dorothy Elizabeth (Kaufman) Bay, 98, of Russell, Kansas, entered into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, June 17, 2020 at the home of her son and beloved daughter-in-law in College Station, Texas. She was born May 22, 1922, on the family farm south of Dorrance in Russell County Kansas to Carl and Carrie (Cook) Kaufman. Dorothy graduated from Dorrance High School with the class of 1940.&nbsp;

She met her future husband, Edd, at a dance and they were united in marriage on April 24, 1941. Edd and Dorothy made their home in Russell, and were blessed with a son, Darrell Edward, on December 22, 1942. Shortly thereafter Edd was drafted into the US Army and Dorothy, with son in tow, returned to reside with her parents until her husband returned from the WWII Pacific Theater in 1945. The family

then returned to their home in Russell where Dorothy served as a devoted wife and mother until Darrell went off to college. At that time, she went to work as a dental assistant in the office of

Dr. E.J. Kuhn where she remained employed for the next 25 years. Dorothy and Edd were loyal to each other for 50 years until his death on April 7, 1992. Dorothy remained in her Russell home until 2015 at which time she moved to College Station, Texas, where she resided with her son and daughter-in-law until her death.&nbsp; Dorothy was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church Women’s Auxiliary and spent numerous hours volunteering her service to the Lord’s work. She also spent many years volunteering at the Russell Hospital Auxiliary. She loved to crochet and made numerous items as gifts for her family and friends. &nbsp;

Left to cherish her loving memory is her son Darrell Edward Bay and daughter-in-law Ann LaRhea (Query) Bay, a granddaughter Laura Elizabeth and husband Michael Scott Williams, and two great-grandchildren Christina Baylee and Suzanne Michelle Williams, all of College Station, Texas, and one sister Leona Champion of San Jose, California. &nbsp;

She is preceded in death by her parents Carl and Carrie, husband Edd, brothers Lloyd and Orville Kaufman, and sisters Helen Stickney, LaFernPrediger, and Carol Herber. &nbsp;

 </figure>Dorothy Elizabeth (Kaufman) Bay, 98, of Russell, Kansas, entered into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, June 17, 2020 at the home of her son and beloved daughter-in-law in College Station, Texas. She was born May 22, 1922, on the family farm south of Dorrance in Russell County Kansas to Carl and Carrie (Cook) Kaufman. Dorothy graduated from Dorrance High School with the class of 1940.&nbsp;She met her future husband, Edd, at a dance and they were united in marriage on April 24, 1941. Edd and Dorothy made their home in Russell, and were blessed with a son, Darrell Edward, on December 22, 1942. Shortly thereafter Edd was drafted into the US Army and Dorothy, with son in tow, returned to reside with her parents until her husband returned from the WWII Pacific Theater in 1945. The familythen returned to their home in Russell where Dorothy served as a devoted wife and mother until Darrell went off to college. At that time, she went to work as a dental assistant in the office ofDr. E.J. Kuhn where she remained employed for the next 25 years. Dorothy and Edd were loyal to each other for 50 years until his death on April 7, 1992. Dorothy remained in her Russell home until 2015 at which time she moved to College Station, Texas, where she resided with her son and daughter-in-law until her death.&nbsp; Dorothy was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church Women’s Auxiliary and spent numerous hours volunteering her service to the Lord’s work. She also spent many years volunteering at the Russell Hospital Auxiliary. Dorothy Elizabeth (Kaufman) Bay

Meagan Rachelle Wilson, age 30 of Hays, Kansas died Thursday, June 25, 2020, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born April 7, 1990, in Hays, Kansas, to Ross Stuart and Cindi Diane (Chambers) Wilson.

She was an elementary teacher for two years at Western Plains Elementary School in Ransom, Kansas and she spent one year at Lincoln Elementary School in Lincoln, Kansas.&nbsp; She grew up in LaCrosse, Kansas and was a 2008 graduate of LaCrosse High School.&nbsp; She was a graduate of Fort Hays State University with a Bachelor Degree in Education and attended one year at Emporia State College.&nbsp; Meagan attended the North Oak Community Church in Hays, Kansas, was a former board member of the Ransom Library.&nbsp; She was a teacher for the Vacation Bible School at North Oak Community Church, and enjoyed traveling, cooking, reading, and spending time with her nephew and nieces.&nbsp;

Survivors include her parents, Ross S. and Cindi D. Wilson, of the home; one sister, Melissa Sprenkle and husband, Jake, Hays, KS; her grandmother, Julia Chambers, Jetmore, KS; one nephew, Jakson Sprenkle; two nieces, Kinley Sprenkle and Ellie Sprenkle.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Ray and Rowena (Sorem) Wilson; and&nbsp;James Chambers. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Funeral services are 11:00 A.M. Monday, June 29, 2020, at North Oak Community Church, 3000 Oak Street, Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; A private family graveside service will be at 3:30 P.M. Monday, at the Jetmore Cemetery, Jetmore, Kansas.&nbsp;

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Sunday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 E. 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas and from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. Monday at the North Oak Community Church.
