Sylvia Marie Sauer, 85, died September 19, 2020, at her home near St. Peter, Kansas. Sylvia was born May 1, 1935, to Gottfried and Barbara (Billinger) Knoll on the family farm in Rural Graham County. She attended the Catholic Grade School in St. Peter and graduated from Morland High School in 1953.
April 26, 1954, Sylvia married Eugene Sauer at St. Anthony Church in St. Peter. To this union six children were born: Kent, Howard, Donna, Arnold, Phillip, and Rhonda.
Throughout her life Sylvia wore many hats. She was an active member of the Christian Mothers of St. Anthony Church in St. Peter. She wrote the St. Peter column which appeared in the Hill City Times for 37 years. Her poetry was published in 2015. However, her greatest passion was her family of 67. Sylvia’s life partner jobs included many trips for parts and working on the farm driving tractors, trucks, attending car shows, and “shopping”. She did enjoy an occasional beer with her family and friends especially after a hard day’s work. Gardening and raising her “German” blackberries occupied much of her time. She was a fantastic cook and a noodle making fanatic! Sylvia made quilts, baby quilts, and embroidered pieces for everyone, including many other family members and friends. Birthdays and anniversaries were always remembered with a phone call.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, five sisters and one grandson. Survivors left to cherish her memory are her husband, Eugene; her children: Kent (Linda) Sauer, Salina, Howard (Mischell) Sauer, Collyer, Donna (John) Sheckler, Newton, Arnold Sauer, Quinter, Phillip (Linda) Sauer, Assaria, and Rhonda (Greg) Beecher, Rose Hill; sisters: Dorothy Sauer, Wichita and Barbara Solze, Colorado Springs; 20 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Sylvia will be lovingly remembered by many people for her reply when asked, “How are you?” to which she always answered, “I’m wonderful! Tell all your friends.”
