Bettie Lee (Hemel) Murphy, 87, died Thursday July 2, 2020 in Dighton, 
Kansas. She was born August 16, 1932 in Alamota, Kansas the daughter of 
Jacob and Charolette (Voos) Hemel. 
Bettie grew up in the Lane County area attending the local schools and 
graduating from Dighton High. It was there that she met her husband 
Robert. The two were wed December 22, 1949 in Dighton. Bettie came from a
 large family and so naturally she and Robert had one of their own with 
10 children. The family lived in California, Dighton, Hill City, and 
Scott City over the years until Robert’s retirement in 1994, which led 
them to Harper, Kansas. 
Bettie was a strong woman and known to be outspoken. She spent her years
 raising children and tending to the duties of the household. Her 
children fondly remember her apple pies and fresh loaves of bread. 
Bettie enjoyed playing bingo, gambling, and card games. Although she was
 firm, family was important to her and weekend gatherings were frequent.
 
Bettie is survived by her children- Dennis of Scott City, Larry 
(Marlene) of Scott City, Kathy (Curtis) Lewis of Des Moines, Iowa, Bob 
(Pam) of Scott City, Charlie (Gail) of Scott City, Susan of Dighton, 
Sandra (Dane) Pendleton of Albia, Iowa, Melvin (Denise) of Scott City, 
and Ron of Scott City. Five sisters- Melva (Freeman) Knight of Scott 
City, Ila (Gene) Boone of Dighton, Alice Rennison of Scott City, Shirley
 Ummel of Harper, and Linda (Greg) Barlow of Anthony. 20 grandchildren,
 35 great-grandchildren, and 3 great great-grandchildren, along with 
numerous nieces and nephews. 
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband- Robert, Sr., 
brothers- Ed, Reub, Cliff, Don, Delmar, and Jake, Jr., one sister- Nedra
 Sue, one son- Roger, three grandsons- Deacon, Tyler, and Jarrett, and 
two great-grandchildren. 
Funeral Service will be held Tuesday July 7, 2020 at 10:30 am at Dighton
 United Methodist Church with Rev. Berniece Ludlum officiating. Friends 
may call from noon to 8 Monday July 6, 2020 at Boomhower Funeral Home.

Bettie Lee (Hemel) Murphy

Robin Renee’ (Shipley) Pyles, age 43, of McCook, Nebraska passed from 
this earth on Tuesday, June 30, 2020 at her home after a valiant fight 
against cancer for the past two years. Robin was born on May 23, 1977, 
in Hoxie, Kansas to Ellen (Brewster) Shipley-Howard and Gary Shipley. 
She graduated from Hoxie High School in 1997 and moved to McCook, 
Nebraska to live near her family. Robin married Daniel “Danny” Pyles 
Jr. on June 26, 2010, in McCook, Nebraska. Robin was baptized into the 
Christian faith at the age of ten and reaffirmed her faith in the Lord 
Jesus Christ as an adult.
 Robin worked as a Home Health Aide. Her favorite job was working 
with her brother, Lance. Robin loved to fish, camp and watch movies. 
She was a good hearted soul and never held a grudge, always forgiving. 
 Robin leaves to morn, her husband, Daniel Pyles Jr. of the home, 
McCook, Nebraska; children, Paige Ribordy of McCook, Nebraska and Josef 
Kripel of Omaha, Nebraska; father, Gary Shipley and step-mother, 
Roberta of Hoxie, Kansas; mother, Ellen Howard &amp; step-father, Jim of
 McCook, Nebraska; sister, Angela Wolgram and family of Madison, Kansas;
 brother, Lance Shipley of McCook, Nebraska; grandmothers, Della Jean 
Shipley and Betty Brewster both of Hoxie, Kansas; step-sisters, Schra

Sharon Lynn (Henderson) Harper, age 72, of Goodland passed away 
Tuesday, June 30, 2020.&nbsp; Sharon was born on July 30, 1947 to Leonard and
 Manette (Anderson) Henderson in St. Francis, Kansas.&nbsp;

Sharon grew up and went to school in St. Francis.&nbsp; Later she attended
 Colby Community College and studied business.&nbsp; Sharon enjoyed working 
in her garden, baking, sewing, and most importantly, spoiling her

Oskaloosa, Kansas. He was born November 8, 1949, in Great Bend, Kansas, 
the son of Melvin and Reta (Decker) Hood.

He is survived by; sisters, Janet Hood of Hoisington, Jolene Helmick

Maryann E. Racette, age 85, of Oakley, KS died at Logan County Senior 
Living on July 1, 2020. 

She was born April 17, 1935, in rural Sheridan 
County, KS to Levi and Margaret (Tremblay) Ribordy. Maryann married Luke
 A Racette on January 25, 1954, in Grainfield, KS. To this union, eight&nbsp; children were born, Kathy (Ed) Wolak, Goodland, KS. William, Oakley, 
Lori (Phil) Collins, Grinnell, KS, Kennan (Konnie) Racette, Oakley, 
Greg, Donella (Randy) Younkin, Oakley, Darren (Lisa) Racette, 
Grainfield, KS, Rocky (Aida) Racette, Oakley. 
Maryann was a homemaker who loved her family dearly. She loved the 
weekly Sunday dinners when the whole family would get together and after
 lunch the clan would go fishing. Maryann was a member of Immaculate 
Conception Parish in Grinnell where she taught religion classes for many
 years. Most recently she belonged to St. Josephs Parish in Oakley. 
She was preceded in death by her husband Luke; son Greg; son-in-law Ed Wolak and twin grandsons, Tobby and Tanner. 
She is survived by her children listed above; sister Rita 
Truetken-Huffman, of St Louis, MO; 21 Grandchildren; 44 Great 
Grandchildren, and 2 Great, Great Grandchildren. 
The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 pm, Sunday, July 5th, 2020 
at St Joseph’s Catholic Church, in Oakley with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m. 
Memorial Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 6, 2020, also at the 
church. Burial will follow at the Immaculate Conception Catholic

Maryann E. Racette

Eulalia Sanger, of Quinter, Kansas, died peacefully Monday morning, June 29, 2020, at the Gove County Medical Center in Quinter. She was 94 years and five days at the time of her death.&nbsp;

She was born Eulalia Mae Crist, June 24, 1926, in the farmhouse of her parents, Rev. D. (Daniel) Floyd and Nellie Mae (Jamison) Crist, in rural Quinter. She was their middle child and only daughter. She looked up to and respected her older brother, B. (Burton) Wayne, while always watching after and protecting her younger brother, D.A. (Daniel Albert). Growing up and staying on this same farmstead until she left for college, Eulalia helped with the gardening (vegetables, fruits and flowers), chickens, farm chores, harvest meals, sewing, and putting up the garden produce. Being the daughter and granddaughter of Brethren preachers, Eulalia was very involved in the Quinter Church of the Brethren. She held fond memories of her growing-up years, playing with her many cousins and friends, as both sets of grandparents, and many uncles and aunts lived in the Quinter area.

Eulalia was a life-time member of the Quinter Church of the Brethren, remembering well the first white wooden-framed church in which she attended Sunday school and church, and taught the younger children when she was in high school. She would accompany her mother, Nellie, to quilting, Ladies' Aid meetings, and Love Feast preparations, watching all the goings-on. She remained very active in the life of the church. In her adult years, she served six years as Board Chair, as well as attended the women's work activities, and participated in the monthly class dinners and adult Sunday school.&nbsp;

She attended both grade school and high school at Quinter, then left home to attend McPherson College, graduating in 1948 with a degree in English Literature. While at college, Eulalia met Merrill Sanger upon his return to McPherson College to finish his secondary education following his service in CPS. They were united in marriage on August 3, 1947, in the first wooden-framed Church of the Brethren at Quinter.

Following graduation from college, Merrill and Eulalia moved back to Quinter and farmed. They were blessed with five children and raised them on the farm west of Quinter. Eulalia found her greatest joy in staying busy with growing a large garden and putting up the produce, helping with the farming, serving God by being involved in the church, being active in the&nbsp; Athenaeum Club, teaching school, and being surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She went back to school at Fort Hays College to receive her teaching degree and taught grade school for 27 years, mainly in USD 292, teaching three generations of students.

Eulalia was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Nellie Crist; husband, Merrill David Sanger; eldest infant daughter, Rhonda Faye Sanger; and grandson, Michael Spencer Tilton.

She is survived by her children: Geneva (Bruce) Krehbiel of Pratt, KS, Charla (Don) Tilton of Quinter, Brenda (Gerald) Berggren of Lindsborg, KS, and Stan (Jeanette) Sanger of Lawrence, KS; 15&nbsp; grandchildren and spouses, and 20 great-grandchildren. &nbsp;

The private burial service in the Quinter Cemetery will be Friday, July 3, 9:30 a.m. The public memorial service will be 10:30 a.m., at the Church of the Brethren, Quinter, followed by a luncheon and fellowship. (Daniel) Floyd and Nellie Mae (Jamison) Crist, in rural Quinter. She was their middle child and only daughter. She looked up to and respected her older brother, B. (Burton) Wayne, while always watching after and protecting her younger brother, D.A. (Daniel Albert). Growing up and staying on this same farmstead until she left for college, Eulalia helped with the gardening (vegetables, fruits and flowers), chickens, farm chores, harvest meals, sewing, and putting up the garden produce. Being the daughter and granddaughter of Brethren preachers, Eulalia was very involved in the Quinter Church of the Brethren. She held fond memories of her growing-up years, playing with her many cousins and friends, as both sets of grandparents, and many uncles and aunts lived in the Quinter area.Eulalia was a life-time member of the Quinter Church of the Brethren, remembering well the first white wooden-framed church in which she attended Sunday school and church, and taught the younger children when she was in high school. She would accompany her mother, Nellie, to quilting, Ladies' Aid meetings, and Love Feast preparations, watching all the goings-on. She remained very active in the life of the church. In her adult years, she served six years as Board Chair, as well as attended the women's work activities, and participated in the monthly class dinners and adult Sunday school.&nbsp;She attended both grade school and high school at Quinter, then left home to attend McPherson College, graduating in 1948 with a degree in English Literature. While at college, Eulalia met Merrill Sanger upon his return to McPherson College to finish his secondary education following his service in CPS. They were united in marriage on August 3, 1947, in the first wooden-framed Church of the Brethren at Quinter.Following graduation from college, Merrill and Eulalia moved back to Quinter and farmed. They were blessed with five children and raised them on the farm west of Quinter. Eulalia found her greatest joy in staying busy with growing a large garden and putting up the produce, helping with the farming, serving God by being involved in the church, being active in the&nbsp; Athenaeum Club, teaching school, and being surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She went back to school at Fort Hays College to receive her teaching degree and taught grade school for 27 years, mainly in USD 292, teaching three generations of students.Eulalia was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Nellie Crist; husband, Merrill David Sanger; eldest infant daughter, Rhonda Faye Sanger; and grandson, Michael Spencer Tilton.She is survived by her children: Geneva (Bruce) Krehbiel of Pratt, KS, Charla (Don) Tilton of Quinter, Brenda (Gerald) Berggren of Lindsborg, KS, and Stan (Jeanette) Sanger of Lawrence, KS; 15&nbsp; grandchildren and spouses, and 20 great-grandchildren. &nbsp;The private burial service in the Quinter Cemetery will be Friday, July 3, 9:30 a.m. The public memorial service will be 10:30 a.m., at the Church of the Brethren, Quinter, followed by a luncheon and fellowship. Crossman, age 92, passed away on Monday, June 29, 2020, at his home in Shallow Water, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on September 21, 1928, in Roy, Utah, the son of George Thomas and Effie May Carson Crossman. &nbsp; A resident of Shallow Water, Kansas since 2015, he was a retired truck driver for the US Army in Tooele, Utah.&nbsp; In 1954 he married Gayle M. Axton in Provo, Utah. Verl &amp; Gayle raised their family in Fairfield, Utah. Survivors include his Wife - Gayle M. Crossman of Shallow Water, Kansas, One Son - Verl T. &amp; Monda Crossman of Shallow Water, Kansas, Two Daughters - Cherie &amp; Tom Bishop of American Fork, Utah, Fern Crossman of Homer, Alaska, Four Grandchildren, and Seven Great Grandchildren. Henry Darrell "Al" Jackson passed away on Thursday, June 25, 2020, at 
his home in Battlefield, Missouri, at the age of 84, after a brief 
battle with cancer.
 Al, the son of Wilburn and Irma (Dettke) Jackson, was born in Santa 
Monica, California, on May 24, 1936. He was a 1954 graduate of Junction
 City High School in Junction City, Kansas. He married Virginia (Meyer)
 Jackson in 1955, and to this union six children were born. They were 
divorced many years later. In August of 1980, he was united in marriage
 to Karen (Tunnell) Jackson, and they were blessed to share almost 40 
years together.
 He spent his career as a credit representative for General Motors 
(GMAC) as well as a loan officer for Mid-America Credit Union. These 
positions gave Al an opportunity to create a huge network of friends and
 acquaintances with ties to the automobile industry over the years. As 
the auto industry changed, so did Al’s job, which found he and Karen 
making their home in several communities during their married life, to 
include Hays, Salina, and Rose Hill in Kansas, before retiring to 
Battlefield, Missouri, leaving behind a cadre of beloved friends, 
neighbors and co-workers with each departure.
 Al’s larger than life personality endeared him to all those who knew
 him. Friends and family alike agreed that his zest for life was what 
set him apart from everyone else. Al was a huge baseball fan and loved 
talking about his days as a pitcher on the Junction City Blue Jays 
hometown team in his younger years, and the many games he pitched at 
Rathert Stadium. An avid sports fan, he spent countless hours cheering 
on his beloved Jayhawks, Royals, and finally his Super Bowl Champion 
Chiefs. He relished the fact that many thought he looked a lot like the
 Kansas City Chiefs coach, Andy Reid. He was always ready to strike his
 “coach” pose for a photo op when requested. His love for “all things 
collectible” kept the house full of sports memorabilia and apparel that 
he was happy to share with family and friends whenever they visited. 
The last several years of Al’s life he was able to enjoy and participate
 in the major achievements of all his favorite teams that every sports 
fan hopes to enjoy. He attended many games for his favorite college 
basketball team, the KU Jayhawks, and cheered them on to many Big 12 
Championships. Another special memory will always be the 3-generation 
family trip to attend a Kansas City Royals World Series game. They won 
the game, lost the Series, but won it all the next year. All was right 
with the world. The family gathered in Battlefield in 2020 to help Al 
cheer on the Kansas City Chiefs to a much-anticipated Super Bowl 
championship, allowing him to strike his infamous “Andy Reid” pose as 
the winning coach. 
 His love for landscaping was always evident with his “green thumb” 
for growing over 100 unique cactus varieties over the years. His 
beautiful yard, koi ponds, and yard décor were a testament to his pride 
to achieve a picture-perfect outdoor space to be enjoyed by everyone. A
 lover of music, you could always find him in the backyard listening to 
his favorite tunes while enjoying his favorite beverage. Al’s passion 
for yard décor and all things mystical were a matter of difference of 
décor opinion between he and Karen. Al’s great love for wizards and 
gargoyles would cause you to find many statuettes adorning the fence 
posts and tables, much to Karen’s dismay. The crocodile head that 
floated in the koi pond served as a constant reminder of his 
tongue-in-cheek humor. 
 One of Al’s greatest joys was sharing in the lives of his children, 
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He and Karen enjoyed many trips 
over the years to attend school functions, track meets, and ball games 
to show their support, as well as family get-togethers and celebrations.
 His love for animals was well known, and he was never without one of
 his canine companions at his side over the years. There were many, and
 they will all be waiting to greet him at the end of the rainbow bridge.
 His love for his pets was unbounding, and he spent countless hours 
training, teaching, loving, and nurturing them back to health when 
needed. 
 He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Virginia, daughter, Kathy, and son, Kris.
 Al is survived by his beloved wife, Karen, and sons, Ken (Stacey) 
Jackson, Osborne, Kansas, Kerry (Cindy) Jackson, Lincoln, Kansas, Kelly 
Jackson, Asheville, North Carolina and Kevin Jackson, Salina, Kansas; 
eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Gayla (Ron) Dewitt,
 and brother, Robert Jackson, both of Topeka, Kansas; a host of nieces 
and nephews; cousins; mother-in-law, Esther Tunnell; brother-in-law 
David (Trudy) Tunnell; special family friend, Kimbray Nunnold, and 
beloved canine companions, Riley and Bailey, who dearly miss him.
 A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, 
July 3, 2020, at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 703 
S. Hickory, Mount Vernon, Missouri. Visitation will be held from 
10:00-11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the Church. Burial will follow
 at the Miller Memorial Gardens, Miller, Missouri.

Henry Darrell 'Al' Jackson

Marjorie Cate, nee Wood, who immigrated from England to the US at an early age, grew up in New York City, and later made western Kansas her home, died on June 29, in Lawrence, Kansas. She was just 3 days shy of her 100th birthday.

Marge was born in Liverpool, England on July 2, 1920. Her father, Harry E. Wood, was chief engineer in the British Merchant Marine; he was at sea in the Atlantic Ocean the night the Titanic sank and some early reports indicated that it was his ship that had gone down. Her mother, Mary Singleton, was from the town of Birkenhead, close to Liverpool. Having spent so much time at sea that their son Harry (also known as Sid) did not recognize him, and because of the shortage of land jobs after the first World War, Harry, Mary, Sid and Marge immigrated to the US in 1921. They settled in Jamaica, a town in the borough of Queens in New York City. Marge attended primary and secondary school in Jamaica.

Following high school, Marge attended business school and then went to work at Parents Magazine, whose office was located in Manhattan. In 1944, Marge joined the WAVES, a branch of the United States Naval Reserve during World War II, where she worked in a Navy post office in San Francisco. It was there that she met Robert Cate, who was also in the Navy, and from the town of Almena, Kansas. They married on March 16, 1946 in San Francisco. After being discharged, they travelled back to the New York by train, stopping in Kansas for a time to visit Bob's family. It was her first visit to Kansas.

After a short stay in upstate New York, they settled in Elmont, New York, on Long Island. It was there that they raised four children, Ronald, Philip, Richard, and Debora. During this time, Marge worked at the Floral Park Bank. The family would take trips each summer, first to Ormond Beach, Florida to visit Marge's parents (where they had relocated) and then to Almena, Kansas to spend time with Bob's family.

In 1973, Marge and Robert moved back to Almena. She worked at the Norton State Hospital for a number of years. Marge became a devoted Kansan, learning to enjoy life in a small rural town. They continued to travel extensively, going back east to visit their children, and going on trips to the Northwest and Alaska. They also visited England and met some of her relatives for the first time.

After Bob died in 2001, Marge continued to visit her children in New York, Massachusetts and Florida. She enjoyed working at the Prairie Dog Press, where she was highly praised as an avid proofreader. In 2014 Marge moved to Lawrence to be closer to her daughter. She resided at Brandon Woods until 2017 and then moved to Monterey Village where she stayed until her death.

Marge was preceded in death by her parents, brother Sid, husband Bob, and son Ronald. She is survived by her children Philip (Megan), Richard (Barbara), and Debora Rawlings (Richard); nine grandchildren (Dawn, Robert, Terry, Billy, Ronald, Douglas, Darren, Robert, and Petra); five great grandchildren (Jordan, James, Ian, Owen, and Emery); sister-in-law Adelia Wilnerd; nieces (Gayle, Nancy, Barbara); and nephews (James and Robert).

Rita A. (Pfannenstiel) Bieker, 94, Hays, peacefully passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2020 at Via Christi Village in Hays.

She was born November 22, 1925 in Hays,
 the daughter of Joe M. and Sophie (Rupp) Pfannenstiel.&nbsp; She grew up on a
 farm close to Hays and attended school in Hays.&nbsp; On September 20, 1948 
she was united in marriage to Marvin J. Bieker, and they celebrated 
nearly 34 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on July 30, 
1982.&nbsp; Rita was a homemaker and a terrific cook and seamstress.&nbsp; She 
assisted Marvin with many farm activities.&nbsp; After the death of her 
husband, she moved to Hays and worked at Bickle Fabrics and later 
Wal-Mart until she retired.&nbsp; She especially enjoyed spending time with 
her grandchildren and so loved playing cards in which she was involved 
in many clubs.&nbsp; She was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church
 and the St. Nicholas Ladies Guild.

Survivors include two sons; Dale Bieker
 and wife Joyce of Sun City, AZ and Keith Bieker and wife Donna of Hays,
 two daughters; Brenda Stewart and husband Steve of Hays and Myra Taylor
 and husband John of Salina, seven grandchildren; Blake Bieker (Tricia),
 Brandy Hatheway (Mike), Kelsey Bieker, Shelby Stewart, Aaron Stewart, 
Austin Cart, and Connor Cart, three step-grandchildren; Audrea Marciano 
(Salv), Amy Stewart, and Tiffany Clark, six great grandchildren; Brady, 
Jake, and Savannah Bieker, Lauren Hatheway, Ashlyn Taylor, and Rylie 
Cart, six step- great grandchildren; Elijah, Asia, Quincy, Jewelysia,

 </figure>Rita A. (Pfannenstiel) Bieker, 94, Hays, peacefully passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2020 at Via Christi Village in Hays.She was born November 22, 1925 in Hays,
 the daughter of Joe M. and Sophie (Rupp) Pfannenstiel.&nbsp; She grew up on a
 farm close to Hays and attended school in Hays.&nbsp; On September 20, 1948 
she was united in marriage to Marvin J. Bieker, and they celebrated 
nearly 34 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on July 30, 
1982.&nbsp; Rita was a homemaker and a terrific cook and seamstress.&nbsp; She 
assisted Marvin with many farm activities.&nbsp; After the death of her 
husband, she moved to Hays and worked at Bickle Fabrics and later 
Wal-Mart until she retired.&nbsp; She especially enjoyed spending time with 
her grandchildren and so loved playing cards in which she was involved 
in many clubs.&nbsp; She was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church
 and the St. Nicholas Ladies Guild.Survivors include two sons; Dale Bieker
 and wife Joyce of Sun City, AZ and Keith Bieker and wife Donna of Hays,
 two daughters; Brenda Stewart and husband Steve of Hays and Myra Taylor
 and husband John of Salina, seven grandchildren; Blake Bieker (Tricia),
 Brandy Hatheway (Mike), Kelsey Bieker, Shelby Stewart, Aaron Stewart, 
Austin Cart, and Connor Cart, three step-grandchildren; Audrea Marciano 
(Salv), Amy Stewart, and Tiffany Clark, six great grandchildren; Brady, 
Jake, and Savannah Bieker, Lauren Hatheway, Ashlyn Taylor, and Rylie 
Cart, six step- great grandchildren; Elijah, Asia, Quincy, Jewelysia, 
Francesco, and Giuliana, a sister-in-law; Rose Ann Bieker of Schoenchen,
 and numerous nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her 
parents, her husband, two brothers; Ignatius and Edward Pfannenstiel, 
seven sisters; Matilda “Tillie” Wittman, Sister M. Carmelyn, Philomena 
“Minnie” Lang, Mary Ann Schmeidler, Edna Jane and Albertine 
Pfannenstiel, and infant Jeanette, and a step grandson; Jonathan TaylorMass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am on

Clarence Edward Flores, 45, of Great Bend, Kansas, died on Monday, June 29, 2020, from a tragic accident at Wilson Lake in Lucas, Kansas.

Clarence was born on October 23, 1974, in Clovis, New Mexico, the son of Clarence Ransom and Blanca Flores.  He worked as a clerk O’Reilly’s Auto Parts store in Great Bend, Kansas.

He is survived by his mother Blanca Flores and step father Francisco Perez of Dallas, Texas; sisters Misti Ransom, Tania Flores and  Dominique Redfearn all of Dallas, Texas; aunts Anselma Gutierrez of Abilene, Texas &amp; Zulema Cordova (Roy) of Dripping Springs, Texas, many nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, grandparents David &amp; Ludivina Flores and his aunt Dalia Crayton.

Cremation has been selected by the family and a memorial service for Clarence will be held in Dallas, Texas at a later date.  Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is helping the family with the arrangements.

Vance Ray Kerksiek, age 55, of Colby, KS, passed away June 21, 2020, in 
North Platte, NE. He was born August 27, 1964, to Leroy and Pauline 
(Daughty) Kerksiek. 
Vance was a Veteran of the United States Army. He was stationed at Fort 
Riley, KS, in the Devils Brigade and departed service as a Corporal. 
He met his wife while on a deployment. A friend of his showed him a 
picture of his soon to be wife and they became pen pals and later 
married. 
Vance is survived by his three sons, Daniel, Steven and Cody, who loved 
him and will miss him. He was grandfather to three grandchildren. 
Vance will have his ashes sprinkled at a private location in his home state of Colorado, where he can spend eternity fishing.&nbsp;

Mildred Staab Pfannenstiel, 94, of Leawood, KS., formerly of Great Bend and Hays, KS., died peacefully on June 27, 2020. Millie was born Sept. 18, 1925, in Catharine, KS, to John C. and Christina (Schmeidler) Staab. She grew up on a farm near Catharine, northeast of Hays. Millie graduated from Girls Catholic High School (now Thomas More Prep-Marian High) in 1943 and attended Mount St. Scholastica College (now Benedictine College) pursuing a degree in biology.&nbsp; Upon returning to Hays, she worked at the Hays Daily News as a copy editor. In 1949 she married Alvin F. Pfannenstiel and they were married nearly 65 before Al's death in 2014. Al and Millie were also business partners, owning two grocery stores, one in Ellis, KS, then Al's College Market in Hays. Following that, they owned and operated the Airliner Motel in Great Bend, KS, for 18 years. They shared in many of the day-to-day elements of a owning a business. It could be stated that Millie managed the internal details, while Al handled the operations. They retired in 1986 and resided in Great Bend until 2005 when they moved to Leawood. They also continued their involvement in the farming business with the Staab family. Millie was a devout follower of her Catholic faith and most recently a member of Cure of Ars Church (Leawood). She was a former parishioner of St. Patrick’s in Great Bend and an active member/officer of the Daughters of Isabella. Millie is survived by son Don and daughter-in-law, Mitzi Martin Pfannenstiel, and two grandchildren, Kenedy and Campbell Pfannenstiel of Leawood; brother Francis "Frank" Staab and sister-in-law Kathy Staab of Hays; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by siblings and their spouses, Mary (Clarence) Bell, Benno Staab and Virgil (Wilma) Staab. Also, preceding Millie in death was sister-in-law Myra Staab.&nbsp; A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Monday, July 6 at St. Catherine’s Church, Catharine, KS (seven miles northeast of Hays). Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Hays. Visitation will be Sunday, July 5, 2020 from 5 PM to 8 PM with a combined parish vigil and rosary at 7 PM at Brock's-Keithley Funeral Chapel and crematory, 2509 Vine St., Hays.&nbsp; Monday visitation will be 9 AM – 9:45 AM at the church. Rosalie May (Springer) Wood,&nbsp; 83, of Ellsworth, Kansas and formerly of Russell, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2020 at the Ellsworth County Medical Center.

Rosalie was born February 13, 1937 in Pleasanton, Kansas, the daughter of Leslie Adam and Nettie May (Graham) Springer.&nbsp; She grew up in Pleasanton and graduated from Pleasanton High School.&nbsp; She was the Homecoming Queen her Senior year.&nbsp; She also worked at the Dairy Curl and the local bank.

Rosalie was united in marriage to C. Byrne Wood on April 28, 1957 in Pleasanton.&nbsp; This union was blessed with four children; Anita, Byrne Lee, Brent and Patricia.&nbsp; They made their home in Pleasanton, Kansas, Salem, Missouri and Ft. Scott, Kansas before moving to Russell in 1969.&nbsp; Then in 2014, they moved to Ellsworth.

Rosalie was a devoted wife and homemaker for her children.&nbsp; She also worked as a Secretary and Organizer. &nbsp;

She was a bookkeeper and receptionist for Dr. Cy Raben in Russell.&nbsp; She taught Sunday School at Trinity United Methodist Church for years.&nbsp; She attended and was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Russell and the First United Methodist Church in Ellsworth.&nbsp; She was very instrumental and headed the continuation of the ROAR Art Show in Russell.&nbsp; She enjoyed decorating and hosting guests and events.&nbsp; She was also a member and officer of Beta Sigma Phi.

Rosalie’s surviving family include her husband of 63 years, C. Byrne of the home; daughters, Anita Hoffhines (Ed) of Ellsworth, Kansas and Patricia Cullum (James) of Brentwood, Tennessee; sons, Byrne Lee Wood (Lisa) of&nbsp; Kennett, Missouri, and Brent Wood of&nbsp; Goodland, Kansas; brothers, Leslie Leon Springer (Dixie) of Joplin, Missouri and David Springer (Hazel) of Kansas City, Missouri; and twelve grandchildren.

Rosalie was preceded in her death by her parents.

Charlotte M. (Thiele) Mall-Brantley, age 92, of Hays, Kansas died Tuesday, June 30, 2020, at Homestead of Hays Assisted Living Center.&nbsp;

She was born April 14, 1928, in Norton, Kansas to Franz August and Elsa Dorothy&nbsp; (Wegener) Thiele&nbsp; She married Eugene F. Mall on May 9, 1954, at Norton, Kansas they later separated, and he preceded her in death on October 28, 2001.&nbsp; She married Gordan L. Brantley on March 2, 1982 in Hays, Kansas and he preceded her in death on November 7. 1992.

She was a Funeral Director and homemaker.&nbsp; She owned and operated Mall Mortuary in Hays from 1962 till 1971.&nbsp; Charlotte grew up in Norton, and attended the Immanuel Lutheran School.&nbsp; She moved to Hays in 1962, she was a lifetime member of the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church, in 1984 she joined St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays and was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Hays.&nbsp; Her love and enjoyment in life was her family and her friends. &nbsp;

Survivors include three sons, Frank Mall and wife, Jeannie, Overland Park, KS; John Mall and wife, Rae Ann, Billings, MT; Jim Mall and wife, Sue, Hays, KS; one daughter, Kathy Dinkel and husband Steve, Hays, KS; twelve grandchildren; Jessica Mall, Jeremy Mall (Erica), Joy Mall, Jennifer Norman (Jesse), Hannah Klemm (Philipp), Chad Mall (Heather), Tucker Mall (Jill), Madison Quimby (Ryan) Christopher Dinkel (Visi), Molly Lofstrom (Christopher), Matthew Dinkel (Rebekah), Amanda Dinkel (Indiana Elman); 14 great grandchildren; one brother, Loren Thiele and wife, Greta, AR; two sisters, Wanda Powell, MO; Sharon Meyers, AZ; two sisters-in-law, Wilma Thiele, Colby; Natalie Thiele, FL.

Charlotte M. (Thiele) Mall-Brantley

James Keith Romine, 86, passed away June 30, 2020, at the University 
Of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus. He was born July 28, 1933, 
at Harveyville, Kan., to Clair &amp; Mable (Fee) Romine. He married Rita
 Strobel on October 15, 1955, at Great Bend. She survives.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, James was a farmer. He was a member 
of Prince of Peace St. Patrick Catholic Church, the VFW Post #3111, and 
American Legion #180. He was on the Board of Directors for the Great 
Bend Coop for 8 years. James enjoyed hunting, playing cards, and 
especially enjoyed being with his family.

Survivors include, his wife Rita Romine of the home; two sons, Kent 
Romine and wife Valerie, and Kevin Romine and wife Tammy, all of Great 
Bend; two daughters, Renee Schneweis and husband Paul of Great Bend, and
 Marita Walls and husband Dan of Elkhart; a brother, Gene Romine of 
Independence, Mo.; a sister, Etta May Stratton of Dallas, Tex.; eight 
grandchildren, Melissa, Ashley, Jessica, Kirk, James, Lindsey, Chad and 
Ryan; six great grandchildren, Trace, Grace, Teegan, Hayden, Raquel and 
Owen; special friend, Chris Garner; and many nieces and nephews. He was 
preceded in death by his parents, Clair and Mable Romine; a brother, 
Dale Romine; and a sister, Wilma Rodda.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Sunday, July 5, 2020 
at Bryant Funeral Home, with Vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Mass of 
Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 6, 2020, at 
St. Patrick Catholic Church, Great Bend, with Pastor Terrance Klein

James Keith Romine

Willis Earl Crabtree, 91, of Brewster, died Friday, June 26, 2020, at 
Colby Health and Rehab. He was born August 23, 1928, in Utica, KS, to 
Roy and Gertrude (Jacka) Crabtree. 

Willis graduated from Utica High 
School in 1946 and then attended college at Fort Hays State University, 
receiving his bachelor’s degree. He taught at Beeler, KS for one 
semester before joining the United States Army, serving from 1951 to 
1953. After returning from the service he returned to Fort Hays to 
complete his master’s degree. In the Fall of 1954, 

Willis moved to 
Brewster, KS, to start a long career in education, teaching math, 
science and technology. Willis’ teaching career spanned over 50 years at
 Brewster USD 314 and 12 years at Rexford USD 316. Willis was a pioneer 
in bringing technology to Brewster School and continued his love of 
learning while implementing computer education. While at Brewster, he 
met Joyce Randel, a fellow teacher, and they were married on December 
28, 1958. The couple had three daughters and enjoyed 61 years of 
marriage. Willis was a member of the Brewster Lion’s Club, Utica 
American Legion, MACE (Mid-America Association for Computers in 
Education) and NEA (National Education Association). 
Willis was preceded in death by his parents; brother Roy LaFaun Crabtree and son-in-law Charles Chipps. 
He is survived by his wife, Joyce, of Brewster; children, Bonnie (Shane)
 Holm, of Brewster, Mary Crabtree, of Wooster, OH and Tanya (Rick) 
Szanto, Goodland, KS; sister, Marie Babcock, of Cimarron, KS; 8 
grandchildren, Shanda (Chris) Wagner, Jeremy (Angel) Holm, Spencer Holm,

Gerald Wayne Stoppel, 77, of Russell, Kansas, died on Monday, June 29, 2020, at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas.

Gerald was born on April 14, 1943, in Bunker Hill, Kansas, the son of Edward and Emelia (Heinze) Stoppel.  He grew up on the family farm in Bunker Hill, Kansas in Russell County.  He graduated from Dorrance High School and attended Ft. Hays State University.  He worked on the production line with King of the Road in Russell and for many years worked as a custodian for USD 407.  He was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church in Russell and enjoyed working with the Russell Food bank.  He enjoyed walking his dog Sammy, Kansas University Basketball, listening to country music and insisted on picking up the check for dinner.  He also loved small children and dogs and they loved him.

Surviving family include his sister La Dora M. Meier of Wichita, Kansas; brother in-law Glenn Meier of Wichita, Kansas; sister in-law Janice E. Stoppel of Russell, Kansas; 8 nephews; 1 niece and his beloved dog Sammy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Junior D. Stoppel and Bennie D. Stoppel.

A graveside service to celebrate Gerald’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, July 03, 2020, at the Dorrance City Cemetery with Pastor Roger Dennis officiating with burial following. Alvin LeRoy Volk, 92, of Colby, died Saturday, June 27, 2020 at Prairie 
Senior Living Complex. 

He was born September 19, 1927, in Campbell, NE, 
to Albert and Louise (Niederklein) Volk. Alvin completed the 8th grade, 
in Franklin, NE and was drafted in to the United States Army in 1946, 
serving 1 year in Korea. Alvin’s first job was working for his uncle 
Julius, in Monument, KS. He then went to work in Colorado for the Works 
Progress Administration and worked on the railroad until they found out 
he was color blind. Alvin then began working at the City of Colby’s 
power plant and in 1957, started his career at the Post Office. He 
worked there for 31 years, before retiring on November 28, 1987. 

Alvin 
married Neva Lois Lyon on July 30, 1954, in Colby, and to this union 
four children were born. When Colby Community College began their GED 
Certificate program Alvin was among the first to sign up and he received
 his GED in 1969. 
Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; wife Neva; son David Volk and daughter-in-law Janice Volk. 
He is survived by his children, Leon (Mary) Volk, of Goodland, KS, 
Martin Volk, of El Dorado Hills, CA and Lora Volk, of Colby; 
daughter-in-law Denise Volk, of Colorado Springs, CO; five 
grandchildren, Joshua (Lexi) Volk, of Garden City, KS, Kinsey Volk and 
Ryan Volk, of Goodland, KS, Kim Wright, of Scott City, KS and Wendi

Coming from Kerrville, Texas in 2004, Mandi was a Great Bend 
resident. She loved singing, pranking people and looking at Christmas 
lights. She especially loved her singing hippopotamus.

Survivors include, her mother, Leatrice Christie, her grandmother, 
Alice Martin, her brother Kenneth Martin, and sister, Kyla Martin, all 
of Great Bend; as well as many uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews.

of 90.&nbsp; She was born March 9, 1930, in Phillips County, KS, the daughter 
of Ernest &amp; Jennie (Lanman) Bugbee.

Survivors include her daughters; Charlene Clark of Kechi, KS &amp; 
Marcia Strutt of McPherson, KS; 6 grandchildren &amp; 9 great 
grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 2, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. in
 the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Dan Klinger 
officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery.

Naomi Tuxhorn

Marguerite Elaine Irby, 92, died June 25, 2020, in Liberal, Kansas. 
She was born to Melvin and Barbara (Rudman) Kenyon, June 16, 1928 in 
Bogue, Kansas. Growing up in Bogue, she and her sister Jean were 
surrounded by many friends and relatives. She graduated from Bogue High 
School in 1945. 
 She met and fell in love with Robert Ara Irby, and soon the two were
 married. They repeated their vows before a Justice of the Peace at Hill
 City, July 18, 1945. This marriage lasted until Robert passed away in 
January 2001.
 Early in their marriage she and Robert lived in Houston, Texas, 
while Robert was in the military. They moved to Bogue in 1945 and 
Liberal in 1966. They returned to Bogue in 1986. Several years after 
Robert’s death, she moved back to Liberal.
 While in Houston and Bogue, Marguerite provided a babysitting 
service. While living in Liberal, she worked in high school cafeteria. 
Soon after returning to Bogue, she worked 20 years at the Dawson Place 
Nursing Home in Hill City. 
 Music of any kind was an important part of Marguerite’s life. She 
sang alto with her favorite song being “Victory in Jesus”. Playing cards
 with family and friends was great entertainment, her specialty being 
pinochle. Watching KU basketball with Robert was a special joy as well.
 Marguerite was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the 
United Methodist Church where she always took an active part in UMW and 
Service Club. The Bogue Ladies TPM Club was rarely missed by her.
 She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Robert and sister Jean Venich.
 Left to mourn her passing are her three sons: Layton of Wichita, 
Richard (Debbie) of Valley Center, Bret (Elizabeth) of Liberal; two 
daughters: Judith Day of Franklin, Tennessee and Pamela (Gary) Bird of 
Patoka, Illinois; 12 grandchildren: Mitchell Irby (Andrea) of Lawrence, 
Rebecca Irby of Liberal, Jennifer (Zac) Masters of Franklin, Tennessee, 
Jana (Sam) Inman of Lewisburg, Tennessee, Brian (Julie) Bird of Makanda,

 </figure>Marguerite Elaine Irby, 92, died June 25, 2020, in Liberal, Kansas. 
She was born to Melvin and Barbara (Rudman) Kenyon, June 16, 1928 in 
Bogue, Kansas. Growing up in Bogue, she and her sister Jean were 
surrounded by many friends and relatives. She graduated from Bogue High 
School in 1945. 
 She met and fell in love with Robert Ara Irby, and soon the two were
 married. They repeated their vows before a Justice of the Peace at Hill
 City, July 18, 1945. This marriage lasted until Robert passed away in 
January 2001.
 Early in their marriage she and Robert lived in Houston, Texas, 
while Robert was in the military. They moved to Bogue in 1945 and 
Liberal in 1966. They returned to Bogue in 1986. Several years after 
Robert’s death, she moved back to Liberal.
 While in Houston and Bogue, Marguerite provided a babysitting 
service. While living in Liberal, she worked in high school cafeteria. 
Soon after returning to Bogue, she worked 20 years at the Dawson Place 
Nursing Home in Hill City. 
 Music of any kind was an important part of Marguerite’s life. She 
sang alto with her favorite song being “Victory in Jesus”. Playing cards
 with family and friends was great entertainment, her specialty being 
pinochle. Watching KU basketball with Robert was a special joy as well.
 Marguerite was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the 
United Methodist Church where she always took an active part in UMW and 
Service Club. The Bogue Ladies TPM Club was rarely missed by her.
 She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Robert and sister Jean Venich.
 Left to mourn her passing are her three sons: Layton of Wichita, 
Richard (Debbie) of Valley Center, Bret (Elizabeth) of Liberal; two 
daughters: Judith Day of Franklin, Tennessee and Pamela (Gary) Bird of 
Patoka, Illinois; 12 grandchildren: Mitchell Irby (Andrea) of Lawrence, 
Rebecca Irby of Liberal, Jennifer (Zac) Masters of Franklin, Tennessee, 
Jana (Sam) Inman of Lewisburg, Tennessee, Brian (Julie) Bird of Makanda,
 Illinois, Shelli (Rick) Hubler of Salem, Illinois, Matthew Irby of 
Emporia, Tamara (David) LeMonnier of Andover; Douglas (Christin) Irby of
 Bel Aire, Bobby Irby, Johnny Irby and Donny Irby all of Louisiana; 18 
great grandchildren: Jeremiah, Connor, Dylan, Paige, Jared, Marissa, 
Morgan, Joshua, Jonathan, Grady, Landon, Skyler, Ethan, Johnny Jr.,
