James "Jim" Henry Thayer, age 58, of 
Hays, Kansas passed away on Monday, March 22, 2021, at his residence.&nbsp;He 
was born on September 29, 1962, in Wichita, Kansas to Earl and Jacqueline
 (Idleman) Thayer. He married Cynthia Wilder on January 23, 1982, in 
Hays.

James was a computer technician by 
trade, he enjoyed fishing, songwriting and was a self-taught piano 
player.&nbsp; He had a great sense of humor.&nbsp;

James is survived by his wife,&nbsp;Cynthia&nbsp;of Hays; son, Phillip Thayer (partner Nathan Davis) of Hays; a
 daughter Heather Thayer (Kirk Werth) of Hays; his brother Frederick 
Thayer of Hays; his sister Debbie Ford of Hays; three nephews Kenneth 
Walton, Darin Sheffer and Andrew Thayer; one niece Kellie (Steven) Olson
 as well as two grandchildren, Kassii Werth and Chase Werth.

Services will be announced at a late date.&nbsp;

Memorials are suggested to Cancer 
Council of Ellis County. Donations made payable to the organization may

Rose Marie George, 79, passed away March 25, 2021, at Hutchinson Health and Rehab.

She was born April 24, 1941, in Great Bend, the daughter of Albert and
 Olivia Jenisch Debes. A longtime area resident she was a Pharmacist 
Assistant at Ritzman’s.

She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Albert, the Larned Garden Club and Lutheran Women. She enjoyed gardening and bowling.

On December 30, 1970, she married LaVern Loren George in Larned; he preceded her in death on April 10, 2000.

Survivors include: one son, Mark (Robin) George, Hutchinson; one 
daughter, Deana Morrison, Topeka; three sisters, Alma Frick, Larned, 
Katherine George, Larned and Pauline Herrmann, Kinsley; seven 
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Bernard J Debes.

Funeral Service will be 10:00 am Saturday, April 3, 2021 at Peace 
Lutheran Church, Albert, with Pastor Wayne Baldyga presiding. Visitation
 will be 9:00 am to 8:00 pm Friday, April 2, 2021 at Beckwith Mortuary, 
Larned. Burial will be at the Peace Lutheran Cemetery, Albert.

 Stecklein, 65, of Lindsborg, KS, and formerly of McPherson, KS, passed 
away peacefully on Sunday, March 28, 2021, at Salina Regional Health 
Center, Salina, KS. He had previously worked in production at McPherson 
Industries at MCDS. He was born on October 31, 1955, at the 
St. Anthony Hospital in Hays, KS, the son of Steven and Louise Marie 
(Bieker) Stecklein. He had two older brothers, Steven and Alfred. As a 
child, Ralph lived in Ellis County, KS. Ralph was infatuated 
with water and loved to swim, bathe, and shower. Basically, anything to 
do with water, he loved! He also loved drinking water and milk. He was 
often found supporting the community sports, especially outings to the 
McPherson Friday night football games. He also loved the KU Jayhawks and
 KC Royals. He enjoyed the socialization at the Special Olympics. He had
 a favorite necklace he wore that he made out of plastic rings that were
 from containers he had been collecting. His close-knit circle of 
friends and caregivers would say he was normally always happy and had a 
smile on his face. He will be deeply missed. Survivors include: his loving MCDS family and caregivers; and guardian, Vaughn Ingram of McPherson, KS. 
 The memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, April 1, 2021, 
at Harmony Christian Church, 1713 Mohawk Rd, McPherson, KS 67460, with 
Pastor Troy Schroeder officiating. The service will be livestreamed on

Abby Nicole (McGreevy) Hinman, reached her eternal reward on Friday, 
March 26, 2021, in her childhood home, surrounded by family. Abby 
was born on November 5, 1982, in Pratt to Bob and Debbie McGreevy. Abby 
packed more living into her thirty-eight years than most people do in a 
long lifetime. Abby graduated from Pratt High School in 2001. She was a 
scholar athlete who excelled in both tennis and softball and received 
medals at State. Abby's love of sports included a lifelong love of her 
Nebraska Huskers, along with the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs. 
Abby continued her education at Fort Hays State University where she was
 awarded a Tennis Scholarship. She was active in the Student Government 
Association and the Political Science Club. She graduated in December 
2004 with a Bachelor degree in Political Science. Abby was hired by
 Sunflower Electric Power Corporation in Hays as a Communications 
Specialist, and soon realized she was part of a wonderful work family. 
She brought ingenuity, talent, enthusiasm and her trademark humor to 
Sunflower where she was employed for 14 years. She was a member of the 
Hays Young Professionals, Russell Main Street Beautification Committee, 
the Luray Pride Committee, Luray Friendship Day Committee and Luray 
United Methodist Church. As much as she loved the challenges of the
 job, enjoyed her co-workers and the travel that took her from coast to 
coast, her first love was family. In August of 2014, Abby married 
Jeff Hinman at First United Methodist Church in Pratt. They built their 
life together north of Bunker Hill, Kansas and enjoyed their trips to 
Colorado, Hawaii and Alaska. In 2015 she became the proud mother of son,
 Hudson and three years later, the birth of daughter, Hazel. Abby loved 
taking the children on weekend 'adventures' and loved and cherished 
every minute she had with them. She also enjoyed planting flowers in the
 spring, baking and craft projects with the kids and preparing for 
holiday dinners. Abby joins her grandparents; Mark and Marjorie 
Garrett, and Stanley and June McGreevy, all formerly of Great Bend; her 
Cousin Tiffany Dick; Aunt Lynda Garrett; and Uncle Dennis McGreevy. 
 She is survived by her husband, Jeff and the joys of her life, son, 
Hudson and daughter, Hazel; her parents, Bob and Debbie McGreevy; her 
sister and best friend, Haley and husband, Peter Kern; her beloved 
niece, Mckenna and nephews, Garrett and Stanley, all of Greensburg;

Abby Nicole (McGreevy) Hinman

Estell Darlene Fuller (Darlene) was born August 27, 1930, to Harry 
Monroe Snow and Orah Rachel Power at Glade, KS. She left her beloved 
home in Cedar, KS, on March 29, 2021. She was 90 years young. Darlene’s 
birth order landed her in the middle of 11 siblings who have all 
predeceased her. She attended grade school at Norton District 73 Country
 School, and graduated from Agra high school, Agra, KS, class of 1948. 
Darlene was the first of her family to graduate from high 
school…although she was never one to bring attention to herself. Her 
children hadn’t heard this fact until around her 80th birthday.
 Darlene married Dale Fuller in 1950 at Phillipsburg, KS. To this 
union were born four children: Steven Dale (Maureen) of Evans, CO; Darla
 Dianne Brock (Robert) of Enfield, CT; Kent Douglas (Lenise) of Smith 
Center, KS; Debra Darlene Bennett (Cecil) of Blanchard, OK. After moving
 around while Dale worked on building numerous dams and roads, they 
settled in Cedar. The small town suited the Fuller family, and Darlene 
had no desire to live anywhere else. 
 Darlene raised her children in Cedar, keeping busy sewing her 
daughters’ clothes, attending sporting and 4-H events, and working odd 
jobs. Coming home from school and finding chocolate no-baked cookies, 
homemade donuts, or saltine crackers filled with homemade frosting was 
the norm for her kids. In 1971, she started working in the cabinet shop 
at Peterson’s Industries in Smith Center. She enjoyed working there for 
22 years. Later she kept busy by working Home Health in surrounding 
towns. Darlene was proud to serve as the Treasurer for the City of Cedar
 for 50 years. She attended the Cedar Christian Church. She enjoyed 
doing crossword puzzles, reading, playing solitaire on the computer, 
watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, listening for Monogram Money on 
the KKAN radio station and, most of all, mowing her yard, which, at the 
age of 90, she had to give up due to failing health.
 Preceding her in death were her parents, Harry and Orah Snow; her 
husband, Dale, in 2011; a great-granddaughter, Ella Grace Fuller; three 
sisters and eight brothers; and numerous close friends and extended 
family members.
 Those left to mourn her loss are her spoiled dog, Sissy; her four 
children and their spouses; her eleven grandchildren: Brandon and Kim 
Fuller, Mustang, OK; Shilo and Darren Nichols, Minneapolis, KS; Trevor 
Fuller, Minneapolis, KS; Clint and Jennifer Brock, Garden City, KS; Coby
 Brock and Jennie Frost, Anchorage, AK; Casie and Martin Patry, Enfield,
 CT; Toni and Jared Franz, Fort Belvoir, VA; Matthew Fuller, Smith 
Center, KS; Victoria and Ross Coomes, Hoisington, KS; Jennifer and 
Justin Siniard, Moore, OK; and Jamie Smith, Normal, IL. Darlene also 
leaves behind 20 great grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren with the 4th

Estell Darlene Fuller

Daniel E. (Dan) Nedland was born on September 11, 1947, the second 
son of Victor E. and Elizabeth Irene (Howard) Nedland. He passed away 
on March 23, 2021, at the age of seventy-three, at the hospital in 
Oberlin. He had a more than seventeen-year battle with multiple 
myeloma, a cancer of the blood.
 
 Dan grew up in Ladysmith, WI, in a family of six boys: Jack, Dan, 
Fred, Paul, Sam, and Joe. He graduated from Ladysmith High School in 
1965. He attended the University of Wisconsin in Superior, graduating 
in 1969 with a B.S. Degree in Geology. He attended the University of 
Wisconsin in Madison, receiving a M.S. Degree in Geology in 1971. He 
studied at Rice University in Houston, TX, for his doctorate in Geology 
from 1972 through 1974. He taught geology at Wellesley College in 
Wellesley, MA, in 1974 and 1975. He then worked briefly in a research 
lab in Pittsburgh, PA, and Houston, TX, before joining Atlantic 
Richfield Oil and Gas Company (ARCO) in Anchorage, AK, in 1976. He 
worked for ARCO for more than twenty years in technical and management 
positions, for both domestic and international operations. He managed 
ARCO exploration programs in New Zealand and was Chief Geologist for 
ARCO Azerbaijan, as well as living in Jakarta while working for ARCO 
Indonesia. He joined Gaffney, Cline &amp; Associates, a U.K. based 
consulting firm, in 1997, moving with his family to Singapore. There he
 advised international clients throughout Europe and Asia on exploration
 play development, basin evaluation, and acquisition and divestiture 
analysis. 
 
 Dan is remembered by his professional colleagues for his deep and 
broad understanding of complex plate tectonic systems, particularly the 
motion and structural development of strike-slip fault systems, in

Oberlin, KS. They had three children that were the lights of his life: 
Cameron (Rebecca), Hunter (Rhiannon), and Elizabeth (Braden Fischer).
 
 Dan is survived by his wife, Rhonda May, three children, and two 
grandchildren, Liam Nedland and Brogan Nedland, as well as a multitude 
of extended family and friends. He is predeceased by his parents, 
brother Paul, sister-in-law Carol Nedland, and a nephew, Jeff Nedland.

Daniel E. (Dan) Nedland was born on September 11, 1947, the second 
son of Victor E. and Elizabeth Irene (Howard) Nedland. He passed away 
on March 23, 2021, at the age of seventy-three, at the hospital in 
Oberlin. He had a more than seventeen-year battle with multiple 
myeloma, a cancer of the blood.
 
 Dan grew up in Ladysmith, WI, in a family of six boys: Jack, Dan, 
Fred, Paul, Sam, and Joe. He graduated from Ladysmith High School in 
1965. He attended the University of Wisconsin in Superior, graduating 
in 1969 with a B.S. Degree in Geology. He attended the University of 
Wisconsin in Madison, receiving a M.S. Degree in Geology in 1971. He 
studied at Rice University in Houston, TX, for his doctorate in Geology 
from 1972 through 1974. He taught geology at Wellesley College in 
Wellesley, MA, in 1974 and 1975. He then worked briefly in a research 
lab in Pittsburgh, PA, and Houston, TX, before joining Atlantic 
Richfield Oil and Gas Company (ARCO) in Anchorage, AK, in 1976. He 
worked for ARCO for more than twenty years in technical and management 
positions, for both domestic and international operations. He managed 
ARCO exploration programs in New Zealand and was Chief Geologist for 
ARCO Azerbaijan, as well as living in Jakarta while working for ARCO 
Indonesia. He joined Gaffney, Cline &amp; Associates, a U.K. based 
consulting firm, in 1997, moving with his family to Singapore. There he
 advised international clients throughout Europe and Asia on exploration
 play development, basin evaluation, and acquisition and divestiture 
analysis. 
 
 Dan is remembered by his professional colleagues for his deep and 
broad understanding of complex plate tectonic systems, particularly the 
motion and structural development of strike-slip fault systems, in

Cheryl S. Schlegel, 64, Alexander, Kansas, passed away Monday, March 29, 2021, at her home.

Cheryl was born September 5, 1956, in La Crosse, Kansas, the daughter of Donald Ralph and Enola Mae (Baker) Kirby.&nbsp; She was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas.&nbsp; A 1974 graduate of La Crosse High School, La Crosse, Kansas, she was a homemaker and farm wife.

On November 14, 1981, she married Gene Schlegel at the First Christian Church, La Crosse, Kansas.&nbsp;

She and Gene worked side by side and built a life together on the farm.&nbsp; She was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Bazine, Kansas.&nbsp; She served as the&nbsp;Sunday&nbsp;School&nbsp;Teacher and&nbsp;Superintendent, a member of the Church Choir, and Church Secretary for many years.&nbsp; She also served the community as an EMT, playing Taps for the Honor Guard, USD 395 School Board member, and an Election Board Official.&nbsp; She supported her children in their many activities in school and 4-H.&nbsp; She later became a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Dodge City, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include:&nbsp; her husband, Gene Schlegel, Alexander, Kansas; son, Derrick Schlegel, Liebenthal, Kansas; daughter, Amanda Schmidtberger (Clay), Anson, Texas; five grandchildren, Robert Schlegel, Dylan Schlegel, Wyatt Schmidtberger, Morgan Schmidtberger, and Josephine Schmidtberger; a sister, Barbara Kirby, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and brother Doyle’s daughter, Paula Mackey.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Doyle Kirby.

Visitation will be Wednesday, March 31, 2021, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. &nbsp;

David Earl Bray, 77, of Natoma, Kansas, passed away of Covid 
complications on Friday, February 26, 2021, at the Hays Medical Center, 
surrounded by his wife and children.

Dave was born on May 04, 1943, in Kanopolis, Kansas, the son of 
William and Kathryn (Canaday) Bray.&nbsp; As a child, his family lived in 
Colorado and Wyoming where his father worked in the mines, before 
returning to Kanopolis. He served in the Navy.&nbsp; He married Marlene J. 
Pooley on August 12, 1966, in Alva, Oklahoma.&nbsp; From this union Dave and 
Marlene were blessed with 3 children Neal, Teresa and Carmen.&nbsp; Dave 
worked in the oilfield most of his life working as a roustabout, pulling
 unit operator and pumper.&nbsp; He loved going to races at the local dirt 
tracks. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially
 his kids and grandkids.

He is survived by his wife Marlene of the home, son Neal (Julie), 
daughters Teresa Bray and Carmen George (Dustin) all of Natoma; sisters 
Barbara Ahlquist of Salina and Bonnie (Jack) Robison of Sylvan Grove. 
Grandkids Keshia (John) Williams, Chase (Dayanara) Laffery, Ryan Bray, 
Jensen Farrington, Erika George, Derek George, Jeremy Bray and Meadow 
Wickham.&nbsp; He was blessed with&nbsp; 7 great-grandkids. He leaves behind a 
host of extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Julia Long and Mary 
Markle and brother Billy Bray. Cremation has been selected by the 
family.&nbsp; An informal graveside service will be held at the Natoma

daughter of Martin and Olga Anderson Siegrist.&nbsp; A resident of Healy, 
Kansas since 1940 moving from Utica, Kansas, she was a Homemaker.

She was a member of the Healy United Methodist Church in Healy, Kansas.

On August 26, 1952, she married Kaye D. Von Schriltz in Healy, 
Kansas.&nbsp; He passed away on February 22, 2017, in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include her One Daughter - Sue &amp; Craig Pallister of 
Hays, Kansas, Three Sons - Arron Von Schriltz, Eric Von Schritlz, and 
Kevan Von Schriltz all of Healy, Kansas, One sister -Yvonne Jennison of

Wanda R. Ginn, age 84, of Goodland passed away Sunday, March 28, 2021, at Topside Manor in Goodland.&nbsp;

Wanda was born February 7, 1937, to Clarence H. and Nellie V. 
(Wilburn) Heyen in Rawlins County, Kansas.&nbsp; She grew up in Rawlins 
County and graduated from Atwood Community High School in 1955 .&nbsp; On 
January 22, 1956, she married Michael Ginn, to this union four children 
were born Mark, Terry, Jeffrey, and Michelle.&nbsp;

For many years, Wanda was a cashier at Boogaarts/Jubilee Foods Grocery
 Store.&nbsp; Wanda was a member of the First Christen Church of Goodland.&nbsp; 
She enjoyed painting, crystal hunting and walks in the Colorado 
mountains, and she loved spending time with her family and friends.&nbsp;

Preceding her in death were her parents and grandparents; son, Mark 
and his wife Vicky; and sisters, Velma Englebrecht and Jean Pitner.&nbsp;

She is survived by her son, Terry (Mary) Ginn of Trenton, NE; son, 
Jeffrey Ginn (Bridgette Helman) of Rice Lake, WI; daughter, Michelle 
Ginn of Goodland, KS; grandchildren: Eric Ginn, Elicia “Missy” Ginn,

Wanda R. (Heyen) Ginn

Frances Elaine Vacura, a longtime resident of Decatur County, passed 
away on March 28th, 2021 at the home of Jeff &amp; Gayle (Vacura) White,
 Paola, KS.  at the age of 88. 

 She was born August 21, 1932, in her 
great-grandfather’s home in Akron, Co., the daughter of Thomas (T.J.) 
and Lola Mae (DeGifford) Bullimore.  She lived with her family in Sidney
 &amp; Glasgow, Montana until she was five years old when they moved to 
Fruita, CO.  She spent three years in Black Point, CA during World War 
II while her father worked in the Mare Island naval shipyards in 
Vallejo, CA.   They returned to Colorado where she graduated from Fruita
 Union High School in 1950.   She graduated from Southwestern Bible 
Institute Junior College in Waxahachie, Texas in 1952 where she worked 
in the women’s dorm office at the PBX board while studying toward an 
education degree. 

She taught in Dresden and Jennings grade schools 
during the school terms from 1952 to 1956 and attended Western State 
College in Gunnison, Co. in the summers where she also worked as a 
receptionist in the women’s dorm office. She was a member of the College
 Hiking and Recreation Club while attending there.
 	 On May 27, 1956, she married DeWayne Lee Vacura in the Jennings 
United Methodist Church. He was called to serve in the military in the 
spring of 1957. He was stationed in Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia 
where they lived for three months. When he was stationed in South Korea,
 Frances taught a semester in the Dresden school system and then moved 
to Colorado where she worked in the Grand Junction First National Bank 
until he returned. He was stationed at Fort Riley, KS where they 
resided until he was discharged in 1959. They made their home on a farm 
in Northwest Jennings Township while farming with his parents before 
moving to the Vacura family home place in 1968 where they raised cattle 
and farmed until buying a home in Oberlin in 1987 to be near his parents
 while continuing to farm. She worked for The Oberlin Herald as a 
typist and proofreader for nine years. 
 She was a lifelong member of the Assembly of God Church, first in 
Colorado and then in Kansas. She taught elementary Sunday School classes
 in the Fruita, Dresden and Oberlin churches and was a pianist for 
church services for many years. She was also a member of the Assembly 
of God Women’s Ministries where she served as Secretary-Treasurer. 
 	Survivors include a son, Thomas Vacura and wife Jolene of Clayton, 
and a daughter, Gayle White and husband Jeffrey of Paola; 8 
grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, two sisters, Jan Caple, Panama 
City, Fl., and Donna Miller, North Augusta, SC; a sister-in-law, Donna 
(Vacura) Severns and husband Neil, Beatrice, NE, several nieces and 
nephews.
 	She was preceded in death by her husband DeWayne in 2004, her parents, her husband’s parents, 1 brother-in-law, and 2 nieces.

 </figure>Frances Elaine Vacura, a longtime resident of Decatur County, passed 
away on March 28th, 2021 at the home of Jeff &amp; Gayle (Vacura) White,
 Paola, KS. at the age of 88. She was born August 21, 1932, in her 
great-grandfather’s home in Akron, Co., the daughter of Thomas (T.J.) 
and Lola Mae (DeGifford) Bullimore. She lived with her family in Sidney
 &amp; Glasgow, Montana until she was five years old when they moved to 
Fruita, CO. She spent three years in Black Point, CA during World War 
II while her father worked in the Mare Island naval shipyards in 
Vallejo, CA. They returned to Colorado where she graduated from Fruita
 Union High School in 1950. She graduated from Southwestern Bible 
Institute Junior College in Waxahachie, Texas in 1952 where she worked 
in the women’s dorm office at the PBX board while studying toward an 
education degree. She taught in Dresden and Jennings grade schools 
during the school terms from 1952 to 1956 and attended Western State 
College in Gunnison, Co. in the summers where she also worked as a 
receptionist in the women’s dorm office. She was a member of the College
 Hiking and Recreation Club while attending there.
 	 On May 27, 1956, she married DeWayne Lee Vacura in the Jennings 
United Methodist Church. He was called to serve in the military in the 
spring of 1957. He was stationed in Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia 
where they lived for three months. When he was stationed in South Korea,
 Frances taught a semester in the Dresden school system and then moved 
to Colorado where she worked in the Grand Junction First National Bank 
until he returned. He was stationed at Fort Riley, KS where they 
resided until he was discharged in 1959. They made their home on a farm 
in Northwest Jennings Township while farming with his parents before 
moving to the Vacura family home place in 1968 where they raised cattle 
and farmed until buying a home in Oberlin in 1987 to be near his parents
 while continuing to farm. She worked for The Oberlin Herald as a 
typist and proofreader for nine years. 
 She was a lifelong member of the Assembly of God Church, first in 
Colorado and then in Kansas. She taught elementary Sunday School classes
 in the Fruita, Dresden and Oberlin churches and was a pianist for 
church services for many years. She was also a member of the Assembly 
of God Women’s Ministries where she served as Secretary-Treasurer. 
 	Survivors include a son, Thomas Vacura and wife Jolene of Clayton, 
and a daughter, Gayle White and husband Jeffrey of Paola; 8 
grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, two sisters, Jan Caple, Panama 
City, Fl., and Donna Miller, North Augusta, SC; a sister-in-law, Donna 
(Vacura) Severns and husband Neil, Beatrice, NE, several nieces and 
nephews.

Frances Elaine Vacura

William Wilcox died peacefully in Massachusetts on December 17, 2020.
 Wilcox was born in Manhattan, Kansas, on January 14, 1935, the son of 
Albert Ross and Ethel Winifred (Peters) Wilcox. His childhood was spent 
in St. Louis, Washington DC, Ness City (Kansas), and Torrance 
(California).

He received a B.E. degree from the University of Southern California 
in 1956 and a PhD from the University of California at Berkeley in 1960,
 both in Chemical Engineering. After working for TRW Semiconductors and 
the Aerospace Corporation for 8 years, Wilcox returned to USC as a 
professor of chemical engineering and materials science.

In 1975 Bill was recruited by Clarkson University in Potsdam, New 
York to head its chemical engineering department. Over the next 42 years
 he served Clarkson as its dean of engineering, head of the New York 
State Center for Advanced Materials Processing, and director of the NASA
 Center for the Commercial Development of Crystals in Space.

Two years prior to coming to Clarkson, Wilcox began a 30-year 
association with NASA’s microgravity materials research program. This 
included both ground-based research and experiments in Skylab, the Space
 Shuttle, and sounding rockets, as well as two sets of experiments 
performed by Wilcox himself on the notorious “vomit comet” low-gravity 
aircraft.

He received numerous national and international awards for his 
contributions to chemical and materials engineering. Wilcox published 
more than 260 research articles, held editorial positions on several 
journals and organized many international conferences, workshops. He was
 elected Academician of the International Academy of Astronautics, a 
fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and a fellow of 
the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Wilcox also 
brought in big investments to Clarkson. He was inducted into Clarkson’s 
Million Dollar Club in 1998 and over the years he received more than $19
 million (not accounting for inflation) in external funding for his 
research at Clarkson.

Bill is survived by his wife, brother, 4 children, 7 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.

He also has 31 academic children, i.e. former PhD students that he 
advised, as well as 30 MS students. Generations of undergraduate and 
graduate students benefitted from his courses on subjects ranging from 
statistics to materials science.

In 2003, Wilcox was named “Clarkson Distinguished Professor” in 
recognition of his high level of scholarly achievement and service to 
the University. He retired in 2017 and moved with his wife to 
Massachusetts.&nbsp; His cremains will be buried in the Ness City, Kansas, 
where his father, mother and youngest brother.

Deborah Jolene Snodgrass Mangen, 70, of Cedar Vale, Kansas, passed away Sunday afternoon, March 28, 2021 on the family ranch.

Born November 12, 1950 in Great Bend, Kansas, she was the daughter of
 Paul Estel and Ramona Jean (Lewis) Snodgrass.&nbsp; She was raised and 
received her education in Rozel, Kansas graduating from Rozel High 
School in 1967.&nbsp; Following high school, she attended Brown Mackey 
Business College in Salina, graduating with a degree in Business 
Administration.&nbsp; She then took a job working at the Pentagon in 
Washington D.C. and later worked for National Railway Relations Board.&nbsp;

Debbie was united in marriage to Jerome “Jerry” Mangen on January 1, 
1973 in Larned, Kansas.&nbsp; The couple made their first home in Georgetown 
before moving to Oklahoma City.&nbsp; The family moved to Kansas City in 1980
 and in 1985, relocated to Arkansas City, Kansas.&nbsp; While in Arkansas 
City, Debbie worked at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center 
and was an insurance agent for Farm Bureau.&nbsp; She then became the office 
manager for Mangen Chiropractic, where she remained until February of 
2021.&nbsp; In 1996, the family moved to their ranch near Cedar Vale, 
Kansas.&nbsp; Debbie was a proud cattle rancher and enjoyed taking care of 
any animal, especially those in need.&nbsp; She was a very active member in 
her community, serving as a mentor to many.

Her family includes her husband, Dr. Jerry Mangen of Cedar Vale; her 
son Paul Ryan Mangen and wife, Dr. Shanun Kunnavatana of Durham, NC; her
 daughter Carrie Anne Ortbals and husband, Chris of Ponte Vedra Beach, 
FL; her brother Jerry Robert Snodgrass of Rozel; her sister Diane Lynn 
Pfeifer of Hays; she was Baba to Ryan Victor Ortbals, Ethan David 
Ortbals, Eleanor Jolene Mangen, Bodhi Krieger Mangen; and a host of 
nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

In addition to her parents, Debbie was preceded in death by three 
brothers, James Leon Snodgrass, John Douglas Snodgrass, Joe Stanley 
Snodgrass, and a sister Donna Kay Pivonka.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, April 3, 2021 at Garfield Cemetery in Garfield, Kansas.&nbsp;

Longtime Sherman County, Kansas, resident Dale K. Cloyd, 95, passed away on Saturday, March 27, 2021, at the Wallace County Community Care Center in Sharon Springs, KS.

Dale was born on March 1, 1926, in Haviland, KS to Lola M. (Ellis) and Van M. Cloyd.&nbsp; He graduated from Weskan High School in 1944.&nbsp; He was drafted by the U.S. Army in December of 1944, and served a total of 2 years at Ft. Hood, TX, Ft. Campbell, KY and Ft Benning, GA.

He married Ethelyn Jones on September 4, 1948, in Taos, New Mexico.&nbsp; They made a home in Wallace County until the drought of the 1950s.&nbsp; Moves were made from the farm to Sharon Springs, KS, Lawrence, KS, St. Louis, MO, Climax, CO, Derby, CO and back to farming near Kanorado, KS in 1960.&nbsp; He resided in Goodland from 1987 to 2021.&nbsp; He loved farming and continued in that endeavor until 2014.&nbsp; He was a member of the Kanorado United Methodist Church.

Preceding him in death were his wife Ethelyn, his parents; 4 sisters Betty Harris, Gladys Miller, Velma Stephens and Bunola Hill; 2 brothers Harold and Phillip Cloyd, and a granddaughter Samantha Branson.

He is survived by his daughter Dennice Farr and her husband CT of Weskan, KS, son Darrel Cloyd and his wife Becky of Colwich, KS; a brother Van W (Bill) Cloyd of Sharon Springs, KS; a sister Marvel Armstrong of Wichita, KS; 5 grandchildren, 10 Great Grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.

Dorothy Hildegard (Legleiter) (Petrik) 
McCollum, 91, formerly of Hays, passed away Saturday, March 27, 2021, at
 the Newton Presbyterian Manor in Newton, Kansas.

Dorothy was born in rural Liebenthal, 
Kansas on February 1, 1930, the first of fourteen children born to Anton
 and Genevieve (Schaffer) Legleiter. &nbsp;She spent her childhood on the 
family farm east of Liebenthal, Kansas. &nbsp;She married Wayne Petrik in 
Liebenthal, Kansas. &nbsp;They made their home in Rush County where they 
farmed and raised livestock. &nbsp;To this union, five children were born. 
&nbsp;They later divorced. Dorothy married William (Bill) McCollum in Miami, 
Oklahoma. &nbsp;They lived in Hays and Andover, Kansas during their early 
marriage, before returning to Hays. Bill preceded her in death in 1997. 
&nbsp;She remained in her home in Hays until her health required her to move 
in with her daughter, Shirley, in Valley Center, Kansas in 2015. In 
2018, she moved to assisted living in the Newton Presbyterian Manor.&nbsp; 
Dorothy worked at Travenol in Hays and at Beach Aircraft in Wichita. 
&nbsp;After retirement, she took great pride in maintaining her home, yard 
and garden on Indian Trail in Hays. She enjoyed sitting on her deck and 
watching the purple martins. &nbsp;She also enjoyed dancing and attended many
 dances in Ellis and surrounding counties.

Survivors include five children: 
Shirley (Ray) Orr of Valley Center, Charles (Helen) Petrik of Manhattan,
 Randy Petrik of Colorado Springs, Julie Petrik of Wichita, and Robert 
Petrik of Wichita, 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, four 
brothers: Miles (Janie) Legleiter of Hays, Harry (Patty) Legleiter of 
Hays, Dennis (Carol) Legleiter of Gorham, Walter Legleiter of Hays, two 
sisters: Germaine Degenhardt of Hays, and Patty (Gary) Rohr of Hays, two
 sisters-in-law: Carol Legleiter of Hays and Leota Legleiter of Great 
Bend, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her 
parents, her husband, one sister: Virginia, and six brothers: Gerald, 
Tony, LeeRoy, Donald, Fritz, and Melvin.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Wednesday, March 31, 2021 at Immaculate Heart of Mary 
Catholic Church, with Fr. Nick Parker officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow 
in St. Joseph Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 6:00 pm until 8:00 on 
Tuesday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Wednesday, all at Hays Memorial

Dorothy Hildegard (Legleiter) (Petrik) McCollum

Victor D. Johnson, age 81, of Lawrence, Kansas, passed away peacefully 
on Friday, March 26 at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. Victor 
will be lying in state on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 from 10:00 am ~ 7:30 
pm, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary with a Rosary Recitation starting at 
5:00 pm. Family will be present from 5:00 pm ~ 7:30 pm. A Funeral Mass 
will be Wednesday March 31 at 10:00am at St. Lawrence Catholic Center.

He was born on July 27, 1939 in Great Bend, Kansas, the son of Victor 
and Gladys Johnson. Vic had four older sisters. He graduated from Great 
Bend High School in 1957, and he graduated from Fort Hays State 
University with a BS in Business Administration. Vic enjoyed 25 years of
 a career in banking, several years in Commercial Real Estate, and he 
retired in 2001. 
Vic married the love of his life, Patricia L. Stehno, on July 14, 1962. 
This union was blessed with two daughters, Miriam and Marty. Vic and Pat
 enjoyed 58 wonderful years of happiness together. They loved to travel.
 Their favorite vacations spots were Europe, Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, 
Aruba, and many different areas of the United States. 
God and family were Vic’s top priorities. His faith and his family were
 the two most important things in his life. He loved hunting, dancing, 
singing, reading, playing card games, watching John Wayne movies, 
spending time with his grandchildren, and his favorite…telling stories! 
Vic was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Gladys Johnson; 
four sisters, Dorothy Pharris, Glennis Gilmore, Lois Lemke and Merlyn 
Sumpter. 
Vic is survived by his wife, Pat Johnson of Lawrence; two daughters, 
Miriam Hampton of Shawnee, Kansas and Denis Rockers of Overland Park, 
Kansas and Marty Simmons and husband Doug Simmons of Olathe, Kansas; 
five grandchildren, Mackenzie Peterson and husband Scott Peterson, Logan

on Friday, March 26 at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. Victor 
will be lying in state on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 from 10:00 am ~ 7:30 
pm, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary with a Rosary Recitation starting at 
5:00 pm. Family will be present from 5:00 pm ~ 7:30 pm. A Funeral Mass

Diane E. (Dowling) Arning, 76, of Bleiblerville, Texas, passed away Saturday, March 6, 2021, at home with family by her side.&nbsp;

She was born October 17, 1944, in Salina, Kansas. Diane grew up in 
Pittsburgh before moving to Houston, graduating from Spring Branch High 
School in 1962. She continued her education at the University of 
Houston. Diane married her high school sweetheart, Ben Arning, on August
 13, 1966, at Christ Church Cathedral. She was employed with Spring 
Branch ISD from 1966 until 1982 as a government and economics teacher. 
Diane then returned to the University of Houston to study law. She 
received her Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1985 and practiced family law 
until 2005. Diane and Ben moved to Bleiblerville after retirement.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Diane was a woman of faith, serving as Sunday School Education 
director at St Christopher’s Episcopal Church. She was also enthusiastic
 about government/politics and was a voting delegate at the National 
Republican Conventions. In her spare time, Diane (affectionately known 
as ‘Honey’), enjoyed volunteering at the nursing home calling bingo. She
 loved musicals, classic movies, music and cutting loose on a dance 
floor. She was an avid reader often saving books or articles to share 
with others. ‘Honey’ loved watching game shows and solving the 
newspaper’s daily puzzle pack, which the grandkids loved doing with her.

She is survived by her husband: Ben Arning, Jr of Bleiblerville; 
daughters: Kim Bond and husband, Randy, and Kris Harden and husband, 
Curtis, all of Bleiblerville; brother: Bill Dowling and wife, Lynn, of 
Hays, Kansas; grandchildren: Tyler Bond, Kyle Jones, Chase Harden, 
Rachel Bond and Peyton Bond; sister-in-law: June Dowling of San Marcos; 
brother-in-law: Craig Arning and wife, Debbie, of Cypress; nine nieces 
and nephews and their precious families, as well as other extended

John Robert Deutscher, age 70, of 
Ellis, Kansas, passed away July 2, 2020, in Ellis. He was born March 31, 
1950, in WaKeeney, Kansas, to Arthur and Iris (Moore) Deutscher.

John was a farmer and an over the road 
truck driver. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting and fishing. 
He also enjoyed playing horseshoes, and pinochle.

He is survived by his children, Beth 
Anne Petz and Andrew Duran of Ellis, Benjamin Arthur Deutscher and wife 
Scarlett of Ellis, and Hannah Marie Deutscher and Husband Mitchell Paul

Richard John Linenberger, 57, passed away March 27, 2021, at his home
 in Great Bend.&nbsp; He was born February 6, 1964, in Great Bend, to 
Sylvester Cletus and Mary Evelyn (Lichter) Linenberger.&nbsp; He married Anne
 Hendee October 23, 1999, in Great Bend.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife Anne; children, Elizabeth, William and 
Joseph all of the home; and mother, Mary Evelyn Linenberger of Great 
Bend.&nbsp; He was preceded in passing by his father, and an infant daughter,
 Kathryn Grace.

Richard John Linenberger

Elizabeth Beard Evans, 96, passed away March 27, 2021, at River Bend 
Assisted Living in Great Bend. She was born in Casper, Wyoming, on 
September 27, 1924, to Robert Edmund and Mildred Florence (Rugen) Beard.

In 1938, she moved from Casper to what was then the intercity between
 Kansas City and Independence, Missouri (now part of Independence), and 
in 1942, graduated from Northeast High School in Kansas City, Missouri. 
In 1946, she graduated from the University of Kansas with a B.S. in 
chemistry and also did graduate work in bacteriology at KU. After 
college, she had several jobs in the pharmaceutical and health fields.

On June 3, 1950, Elizabeth married William Raymond Evans in 
Independence, Missouri. They lived in Kansas City, Kansas, before moving
 with their first two children, in 1953, to Honolulu, Territory of 
Hawaii, where Bill did his internship at Tripler Army Hospital. In 1954,
 the family moved to Hoisington and, in 1958, to Bill’s hometown of 
Great Bend.

Traveling extensively on road trips with her family, Elizabeth 
visited 49 states (all but Alaska) as well as eight Canadian provinces. 
During childhood, she went with her parents and sister, Virginia, 
numerous times by train and car to visit her parents’ families in 
Massachusetts and Virginia and to various places in the West. When she 
was 14 years old, Elizabeth climbed Gannett Peak, the highest point in 
Wyoming at 13,809 feet. As a mom, she planned annual summer vacations 
for her family to visit relatives, national parks, historical sites, 
amusement parks, and world’s fairs. One of her favorite vacation spots 
was the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, Colorado, which she visited 
with family more than two dozen times, starting in 1963. She documented 
vacations, holidays, and extended family gatherings with photos and 
movies that she faithfully organized and labeled.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Elizabeth was a Girl Scout, a Girl Scout leader, and a Cub Scout den 
mother; a member of the Barton County Medical Auxiliary/Alliance for 
which she served many years as International Health Chairman; and a 
volunteer for Meals on Wheels, Central Kansas Medical Center Auxiliary, 
and American Red Cross bloodmobiles. She was a member of the First 
United Methodist Church in Great Bend.

Survivors include her children, Patricia Davis, Independence, 
Missouri; William Evans, Jr. (Amy), Great Bend; Robert Evans (Clara), 
Newton; and Catherine Evans, Lawrence.

She also is survived by eight grandchildren: Joel Morton (Julie), 
Virginia Beach, Virginia; Jessie Caliman (Roger), Independence, 
Missouri; Cody Davis (Cierra Floyd), Houston, Texas; Ryan Evans (Heidi),
 Chicago, Illinois; Zane Evans (Christin), Manhattan; Tiffany Maelzer 
(Marc), Holyoke, Colorado; Rebecca Hardtarfer (Scott), Goddard; and 
Sarah Hensiek (Matthew), Newton; and twenty-two great-grandchildren: 
Baylee, Brailyn, James, and Wesley Morton, Harvey Simmons, Hadley 
Caliman, Ariella Floyd, Roman Marshall, Eva Davis, Kaia and Sienna 
Vazquez, Skylar Evans, Chloe, Cassidy, and Cadence Evans, Kenzie and 
Emily Maelzer, Tyler and Aubrey Hardtarfer, and Logan, Callie, and 
Olivia Hensiek.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William R. Evans, Aug. 
5, 1999; sister, Virginia Marro; and son-in-law, Bill Davis.

Elizabeth Beard Evans

Douglas Bruce Walter, 66, passed away March 26, 2021, at his home in 
Great Bend. He was born March 5, 1955, in Great Bend, KS to Bruce &amp; 
Florence (Corrigan) Walter. He graduated from Kingman High School and 
was employed at Larned State Hospital. He enjoyed fishing, camping and 
traveling.

He married Robin Matthews and they were blessed with one daughter, 
Pamela Jean. After Robin’s untimely death in January 1980, he married 
Cheri Rae (Greenleaf) Degenhardt, June 25, 1982, and gained two 
daughters, Tamra Michelle and Melissa Dawn.

Survivors include, three daughters, Pamela Cooper and husband Pat,

Locke; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his 
first wife, Robin Matthews Walter; his current wife, Cheri Walter; a 
brother, Michael Walter and infant brothers, Danny Walter and Bruce 
Walter; a sister, Connie Chandler; and his parents.

Cremation was requested and a Memorial service will be held at Noon, Saturday, April 17, 2021, at Doug and Cheri’s home, 3315 18th
 St., Great Bend. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been designated to 
Lake Wilson Area Association (LWAA) to help repair the fish cleaning 
station, in care of Bryant Funeral Home, or AA members may donate at <a href="http://Contribution.aa.org">http://Contribution.aa.org</a>.

Doug will always be remembered for his generosity and love of life. 
His positive attitude influenced many and the ones he leaves behind will
 miss him more than words can say. You were loved by many, Doug.

Great Bend. He was born March 5, 1955, in Great Bend, KS to Bruce &amp; 
Florence (Corrigan) Walter. He graduated from Kingman High School and 
was employed at Larned State Hospital. He enjoyed fishing, camping and 
traveling.He married Robin Matthews and they were blessed with one daughter, 
Pamela Jean. After Robin’s untimely death in January 1980, he married 
Cheri Rae (Greenleaf) Degenhardt, June 25, 1982, and gained two 
daughters, Tamra Michelle and Melissa Dawn.Survivors include, three daughters, Pamela Cooper and husband Pat, 
Tami Johns, and Melissa Crawford and husband James; five grandchildren,

Mae Desch-Boos of Lafayette, CO died at home on Saturday, March 13, 2021, passing peacefully in her sleep. She was 90.

 Born to James and Virginia (Koerner) Giebler in Severin, Kansas on February 12, 1931, Mae was the tenth of twelve children. She helped out on the family farm and went to school in a two-room schoolhouse. She later attended Girls Catholic High School in Hays, KS. 

Mae’s lifelong love of music started in the Giebler home. Her father played piano and church organ, while Mae and her siblings sang together. She always had a song in her heart. 

She married Ralph Desch in Severin on November 10, 1949. The couple moved to Colorado in 1951 - first to Denver, then to Boulder eight years later, where they raised their five children. Mae and Ralph were loving, supportive parents to their two daughters and three sons, filling their home with music, laughter, and love. They sang together in the choir at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, and Mae served in the Altar and Rosary Society for many years. She also sang with the Boulder Chorale. Mae lost her beloved Ralph on October 19, 1984, after a hard battle with cancer. 

She carried on, always keeping Ralph’s memory alive in the family. Mae moved to Lafayette in 1997. She surrounded herself with friends, and hosted family gatherings at her townhouse for over two decades. She even found love again, marrying Gilbert Boos in Greeley, CO on September 5, 2006. The newly expanded family brought Mae deep joy and contentedness, even though they weren’t together as long as she’d hoped they would be. Gib passed away on April 11, 2009, and his children and grandchildren will always hold a special place in the hearts of the Desch family. 

Mae was the family matriarch. She was lively and energetic, independent and opinionated, and always game for a laugh. She enjoyed gardening, music, dancing, singing, card games, playing bridge, and doing crossword puzzles. She loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren intensely, attending as many of their activities as she could. She cherished holidays with her family, and a gathering at Mae‘s house was sure to feature group singalongs at the piano, bad jokes, white wine, and a mountain of food (but eat it all, because Mae hated leftovers). Anyone who knew Mae knew what a beautiful smile and glorious, infectious laugh she had. We are going to miss that laugh, those gatherings, and every funny, sweet, feisty moment with her. 

She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Virginia; her husbands, Ralph Desch and Gilbert Boos; her son, Dale Desch; and nine of her siblings. Mae is survived by her sister and brother: Ruth Carter of Jacksonville, FL, and Vernon (Lori) Giebler of Hays, KS; her children: Danella (Mike) Lenz of Aurora, CO, Dianne (Jim) Borth of Olathe, KS, David (Ann) Desch of Helena, MT, and Donald (Barb) Desch of Erie, CO; her grandchildren: Brent (Denise) Lenz, Jeannette (Kenny) Naill, Shane (Abby) Borth, Michaela (Joseph DiMasi) Borth, Briana (John) Wirt, Jessica (Michael) Shamas, Libby Desch, Deanna (Patrick) Moonan, and Taylor (Marina Hanlon) Desch; seven great-grandchildren: Steven, GK, Jocelyn, Eliza, Caleb, Declan, and Adeline; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. 

Somewhere out there, Ralph is singing to Mae, and welcoming her home. “Let’s take the long way home...”
