Lifelong Sherman County resident and Wallace County farmer and rancher Doris Marie Craft, 90, passed away on Thursday, June 10, 2021, at her home in Goodland, KS.

She was born on November 3, 1930, in Goodland to William and Dora (Isernhagen) Sieck.&nbsp; She attended school in Edson and graduated from Edson High School in 1948.

She married Jesse Craft on August 8, 1948 at the Pleasant Home Church just one mile north of their farm.&nbsp; They started farming just 2 miles from where they both grew up.&nbsp; Jesse and Doris loved farming and ranching.&nbsp; They were blessed with three daughters; Shirley, Karen and Marsha.

She served her church and community in various clubs and boards.&nbsp; She and Jesse supported 4-H and served on the fair board for many years.

Preceding her in death were her husband Jesse of 69 years, her parents, two half-sisters; Anna Irwin and Ruth Parsons, four brothers; William, Henry, Paul and Ray, two sisters; Donna and Bonnie and six great grandchildren.

She is survived by her three daughters; Shirley (Ron) Busse of Edson, KS, Karen (Les) Lampe of Shawnee Mission, KS and Marsha (Ron) Schilling of Edson, KS.&nbsp; She is also survived one brother Melvin (Marsha) Sieck, two sisters; Lavone Bring and Dolores (Larry) Brock, a sister-in-law Lois Sieck, eight grandchildren; Justin (Amity) Ihrig, John (Tisha) Ihrig, Jessica Nittler, Anna (Nate) Rahmeier, Paul (Spencer Boland) Lampe, Cash (Amanda) Schilling, Chance Schilling and Clay (Kaycie) Schilling, twenty great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Memorial services for Doris will be held on Friday, June 25, 2021 at 2:00 PM MT at the Goodland United Methodist Church with Pastor Brent Flanders officiating.&nbsp; Private family inurnment will follow in the Goodland Cemetery, Goodland, KS.

Anna Prawl, 84,&nbsp;died peacefully of natural causes on Saturday, June 12, 2021, at the home of her daughter Phyllis Prawl in Goodland, KS.&nbsp;

She was born Dec 24, 1936, in Memphis, TN, to Odin and Willie Mae Dickey.&nbsp;

She met and married Phillip Prawl of Severance, KS, while he was stationed with the Navy in Memphis. Phil and Anna had three children and were married 30 years before they divorced.&nbsp;

She graduated from Highland Junior College, Highland, KS, then later from Weber State University, Ogden, UT, and earned her Master’s in Social Work (Gerontology) from the University of Utah, Salt Lake City at the age of 50. Anna worked for the Council on Aging, Price, UT and managed an Alzheimer’s Unit in Tucson, AZ. She served as an AmeriCorps Member and volunteered for community organizations throughout her life. Her energy, sense of humor, charisma, and warmth will be missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, older brother Billy, and former spouse Philip Prawl who died just six months ago.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She is survived by daughters Phyllis, and Cheryl (spouse Paul Klason), son Pete (spouse Beth) and one grandchild. Her remains will be laid to rest in the Prawl family cemetery in Severance, KS, at a future date.

Longtime Goodland resident Robert Gale Lamb, age 73, passed away Tuesday, June 8, 2021, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Denver.&nbsp;

Bob was born February 2, 1948, to Ray C. and Mary Lillian (Gibson) 
Lamb in Goodland.&nbsp; He grew up and went to school in Tumwater, 
Washington.&nbsp; Bob served in the United States Marine Corps from June 1965
 to May 1969, serving in Vietnam and the United States Army National 
Guard from September 1982 to February 1992, called to active duty for 
Operation Desert Storm.&nbsp; On May 31, 1993 he married Shirley Smith in 
Goodland.&nbsp; Bob worked as a Patrol Sergeant and Firearms Instructor at 
the Goodland Police Department and Deputy Sheriff and Firearms 
Instructor at the Sherman County Sheriff’s Department in Goodland for 28
 years, he retired in 2001.&nbsp; &nbsp;Bob enjoyed fishing, bowling, camping, 
competition shooting, his train collection and most of all spending time
 with his family and friends.&nbsp;

He is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents; brothers, Randy and Russell; and sisters, Carol Rodgers and JoAnn Holton.&nbsp;

Bob is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughters, Sonda (Eddie) Rigway

Betty Hood, 65, passed away June 11, 2021, at University Of Kansas 
Health System - Great Bend Campus, Great Bend, following a short battle 
with pancreatic cancer.&nbsp; She was born November 11, 1955, in Larned, to 
Raymond and Margaret (Wagaman) Swartz.&nbsp; She married Jeff Hood in 1978, 
and were later separated in 2016.

Betty, a long-time resident of Great Bend, devoted her life to caring
 for others, working as a CNA for several years and an LPN for twenty 
years.&nbsp; She lived a full life, especially enjoying animals, flower 
gardening, and above all, her family.&nbsp; Betty cherished the friendships 
she developed with the residents of Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation
 during her employment there, and truly missed them.&nbsp;

Survivors include five sons, Josh Hood (Maudie) of Wichita, Jared 
Hood of Great Bend, Joseph Hood of Great Bend, Jeffrey Hood, Jr. of 
Great Bend, and Jacob Hood (Casey) of Russell; three daughters, Jenny

Marilyn R. Walker, age 74, passed away at the Logan County Hospital 
in Oakley, Kansas on Thursday, June 10, 2021.&nbsp; She was born on August 
21, 1946, in Garden City, Kansas, the daughter of Jacob Frank and Martha
 Baldwin Stillwell.

In 1964, Marilyn graduated from Scott Community High School and 
returned in 1969 as an elementary school teacher where she taught until 
1975 when she moved to Union City, Oklahoma.&nbsp; In 1979 she moved back to 
Scott City to teach until 2000 and then moved to Jewel County, Kansas.&nbsp; 
In 2012 she retired from teaching and moved to West Plains, Missouri in 
2013 until recently moving to Oakley, Kansas in May of 2021.

She was a member of the Ionia United Methodist Church in Ionia, Kansas.

On December 18, 1966, she married William K. Walker in Friend, Kansas.&nbsp; He survives.

Survivors include her Husband&nbsp; -&nbsp; Bill Walker of Oakley, Kansas, One 
Son - Yancey Walker of Oakley, Kansas, One Sister - Marla Stillwell of 
Asheville, North Carolina, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her Parents and One Daughter - Whitney Walker.

Marilyn personified the words grit and determination.&nbsp; Her mark was 
made and will be left in this world by her God-given gifts as an 
exceptional wife, mother, and teacher.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m Friday, June 18, 2021, at 
the United Methodist Church in Scott City, Kansas with the Rev. Larry

in Yuma County, Colorado the daughter of Earl and Clara Elizabeth 
(Albertson) Smith. &nbsp;Lela grew up in Yuma County, and attended school at 
Happy Hollow Country School, in Kit Carson County Colorado. On November 
25, 1948 she married William Edward Davisson in Goodland, Kansas after 
he returned from Germany where he was a prisoner of war, in WWII. 
Together they had five children: Clara, George, Wilma, Leland and Joann.
 They lived and worked in Western Kansas and Eastern Colorado, and moved
 to Goodland in 1966. &nbsp;Lela was a farm wife, spending her time milking 
cows, tending chickens, and helping her husband around the farm. &nbsp;She 
enjoyed crocheting, knitting, quilting, and teaching three generations 
of her family how to play cards. Most of all she enjoyed spending time 
with her grandchildren, family, and friends.&nbsp;

Lela was preceded in death by her husband, William; young daughter, 
Wilma; sons, Leland and George; and brothers, Clarence and Verlin.&nbsp;

She is survived by her daughters, Clara Mae (Paul) Sprenkle of 
McCook, NE and Jo (John)&nbsp;Hinger&nbsp;of Goodland, KS; 9 &nbsp;grandchildren:

Lyle Dean Ummel, 85, passed away on June 10, 2021, at Rhode Island 
Suites in Ransom, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on July 31, 1935, in Ransom, 
Kansas, the son of Lloyd and Mildred (Green) Ummel.

Lyle graduated from Ransom High School in 1954 and soon after 
enlisted in the U.S. Army for two years where he was assigned to the 
U.S. Army Support Command, Europe and stationed in Luxemburg and 
France.&nbsp;&nbsp;

After discharge from the Army, Lyle enrolled at Fort Hays State 
College for a semester and tried out for the football team and made the 
roster.

Through mutual friends at Fort Hays State, Lyle met his future wife, 
Mary Lou Downing, who was working on her teaching certification. On July
 3rd, 1959, they were married in the front entrance of the Methodist 
Church Minister’s house in Sharon Springs, Kansas as they eloped to 
Colorado in order to escape a high society wedding in Pratt, Kansas, 
much to the dismay of Mary Lou’s mother.&nbsp;

Lyle was always a hard worker and worked many jobs in order to 
support his growing family.&nbsp; In the 1960’s to the mid 70’s, Lyle helped 
farm for Bill and Mary Horchem, trimmed trees, mowed lawns, finished 
drywall, worked for the Ness County Road and Bridge Department and 
served as the Night Marshall and City Clerk for the City of Ransom.&nbsp; In 
the late 1970’s Lyle went to work for Clear Creek, Inc and NCRA where he
 retired after 20 years.&nbsp;

Some of his most enjoyable activities in his life were taking his 
family on vacations and watching his children, grandchildren, and great 
grandchildren grow.&nbsp; He led a very active life during retirement, 
traveling with Mary Lou to spend time with family and friends.&nbsp; Many 
times, it was trip to Colorado to fish or learn to ski in the snow, or 
Arizona just to get away from the Western Kansas winters. &nbsp;&nbsp;Lyle loved 
life, loved to laugh, and make other people laugh.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Mary Lou of Ransom; a 
daughter, Kelle Schniepp of Ransom; son’s Mark (Michelle) Ummel of rural
 Burlingame, Kansas and Jeb Ummel of Overland Park, Kansas; 4 
grandchildren, Garrett, Kelsee, Jenna and Harrison; 6 great 
grandchildren, Brayden, Jordis, Adalyn, Audrina, Hailey, and Dawn.&nbsp; He 
was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Robert and Ronald, and 
son, Mitchell.

Memorial service will be on Saturday, June 26, 2021, 10:00 A.M., at 
the United Methodist Church, Ransom, Kansas with inurnment in the Ransom
 Cemetery.&nbsp; Friends may call at Fitzgerald Funeral Home on Friday, June 
25, 2021, from 9:00 A.M. – 8:00 P.M. with the family present from 5:00

Dale Lee Bockelman, 71, died on Friday, June 11, 2021 at his home in 
Lane County. He was born on June 10, 1950 at Scott City the son of 
Walter H. &amp; Pauline (Meineka) Bockelman. He married Kathy Steinle 
on August 3, 1974 at Russell. He later married Ruth Ellen Shaw on April
 18, 1998 at Garden City. She died on May 22, 2014. 
Dale graduated with the Class of 1969 at Dighton High School. He worked
 on a farm before going to work at Lane County Feeders for many years. 
He later worked at Ranger Feeders before retiring. He was a member of 
Holy Cross Lutheran Church of Scott City where he had served as an Elder
 and Usher. He enjoyed his paint horses, doing crafts by welding and 
woodworking and especially being involved with his Grandchildren. 
He is survived by his Son- Leonard (Leslea) Bockelman of Dodge City, 
Daughter- Devonie (Jason) Ferguson of Frederick, Colorado, 
Step-Children- Chris (Miranda) Martin of Benedict, Nebraska and Jody 
(Nelson) Leon of Texas City, Texas, 2 Sisters- Betty Jane Jones of 
Miami, Oklahoma and Mary Lou Borell of Dighton and 7 Grandchildren.

Kevin James O'Rourke, age 54, of 
Dallas, Texas passed away Tuesday, June 8, 2021, in Dallas. He was born 
December 20, 1966, in Hays, Kansas to James Clarence and Rose Mary 
(Rupp) O’Rourke Egger. Kevin graduated from Ellis High School in 1985.

Kevin was an Aircraft Engineer with 
Bombardier in Dallas. He was an avid sports fan, especially of NASCAR, 
K-State Wildcats and the Boston Celtics.

He is survived by his mother, Rose Mary
 Egger of Hays; two stepsisters, Renee Rupp of Hays, and Raimy Hester of
 Hutchinson as well as uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, James O’Rourke; a brother, Sean O’Rourke and a stepfather, Doug Egger.

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM 
Wednesday, June 16, 2021, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ellis. Burial
 will follow in the church cemetery.

Jacolyn “Jackie” Nell Graf, 81, died Wednesday, June 9, 2021, at Brookdale Senior Living, Dodge City.

She was born on September 2, 1939, in Wilson, Kansas, the daughter of 
John and Elizabeth (Peirano) Heard. She was a lifetime area resident and
 worked various different jobs including owning and operating the 
Bicycle Shop and the Hubble Bubble Fun Center both in Dodge City. Jackie
 also worked for Pernell Fabrics. She was a member of the Boothill and 
Front Street camping club, and the Sunflower camping club. She was very 
involved in Cub Scouts and Brownie Scouts.

On August 24, 1957, she married Robert Graf at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wilson, Kansas. He survives.

Survivors also include: 2 sons, Pat Graf and wife Jane, Dodge City 
and Scott Graf and companion Laurie Dirks, Bucklin, Kansas; one 
daughter, Susanna Overton, Dodge City; one sister, Lois Heard Buxton, 
Salina, Kansas; 2 sister-in-law’s, Mildred Dale and Patricia Robinson 
and husband Leroy; 13 grandchildren; and 48 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Tamara 
Slattery, 2 brothers, Aaron and Richard Heard, 2 sister-in-law’s, 
Elizabeth Heard Bonham and Norma Heard.

Graveside service will be held on Friday, June 18, 2021, at 2:00 pm at

John Fredric Marxen, Sr., 84 of Basehor, KS, passed away on June 6, 
2021, at The University of Kansas Health Systems.&nbsp; He was born on June 
11, 1936, in Russell, KS to John Henry and Agnes (Krug) Marxen.&nbsp; In 1961,
 he married Carol Ann Vignery of Sabetha, KS, and they made their home 
in Hiawatha, KS for 31 years prior to moving to Bonner Springs, KS then 
later moving to Basehor, KS.&nbsp; They were married for 60 years.&nbsp; They were
 blessed with two sons:&nbsp; John Fredric, Jr. (JJ) and James Edmond.&nbsp; He is
 survived by his wife, Carol, and their two sons:&nbsp; John Jr. (Kacy) of 
Tonganoxie, KS and James (Andrea) of Midlothian, VA. He is also survived
 by two granddaughters; Elizabeth Ann Hunt (Kevin) and Hannah Marie 
Williams (Trey); a grandson, Connor James Marxen; one great 
granddaughter, Emma, three great grandsons, Elijah, Wyatt, Liam and 
three nieces.&nbsp; In addition to his parents, his brother, Ronald, preceded
 him in death.

During his early years, he worked at Russell Fruit &amp; Grocery and 
Marxen Service Station.&nbsp; He attended schools in Russell, graduating from
 Russell High School in 1955 where he was a member of the 1955 Class A 
Championship Basketball team.&nbsp; He served in the Russell National Guard 
Unit from 1955 to receiving his Honorable Discharge in 1963.&nbsp; He 
attended Midland College in Fremont, NE, received his BS degree in 
Business Administration from Fort Hays State University in 1960 and his 
Master degree in Business Education from Emporia State University in 
1965.&nbsp; He did post graduate study in Economics at the University of 
Missouri in Columbia, MO and the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis,
 MN.

He began his professional career in education at Powhattan High 
School in Powhattan, KS as their business teacher from 1960 to 1964.&nbsp; He
 always felt Powhattan was a special place, because it was where he met 
his wife, Carol, and was fortunate to begin his teaching career with 
quality students and a prideful community.&nbsp; In 1964, he became an 
instructor of Business and Economics at Highland Junior College in 
Highland, KS where he served under six presidents.&nbsp; During his 28 years 
at the college, he served as an Instructor of Business and Economics, 
Dean of Finance (Business Manager) and became their first Dean of 
Instruction.&nbsp; During his tenure as Dean of Instruction, he started and 
developed the Community Service Outreach program offering college credit
 courses in thirty communities throughout Northeast Kansas.&nbsp; Leaving the
 college in 1991, he accepted the position of Director of Business 
Services and Clerk of the Board for the Bonner Springs/Edwardsville 
Unified School District 204 in Bonner Springs, KS until his retirement 
in 1997.

He was appointed to the Kansas State Emergency Medical Council by 
Governor Bennett and served on the council under two governors.

John felt very blessed and was extremely thankful for his wife, 
Carol, their sons John Fredric Jr. and James Edmond and the entire 
Marxen family.

Friends may call at the funeral home 2-6 p.m. Sunday, &nbsp;after 9 a.m. 
Monday at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha, where the family will 
visit friends starting at 1 p.m.&nbsp; Due to the hot weather, graveside 
service will be held in the chapel starting at 2 p.m. &nbsp;Rich Lehmkuhl

Billy Joe “Bill” Mawhiney, 92, passed away June 5, 2021, at Country 
Place Senior Living, Hoisington.&nbsp; He was born February 19, 1929, in 
Altamont, Kansas, to Wesley and Christine (Poer) Mawhiney.&nbsp; Bill married
 his high school sweetheart Alberta Ann Aldridge on March 31, 1951, in 
Parsons, Kansas.&nbsp; They had recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Bill has been a resident of Hoisington since 1971 when he and Alberta
 moved from Great Bend. His early days were spent in Altamont, Parsons, 
and Coffeyville, Kansas. During the Korean War, he proudly served his 
country, as a Tech Sgt. in the Army Reserves.&nbsp; Bill spent the majority 
of his career in the insurance industry. He was employed as an insurance
 adjuster by General Adjustment Bureau which took their family to live 
in Norfolk and McCook, Nebraska, and then Great Bend in 1964. It was in 
1971 when Bill and Alberta purchased the V.L. Durand Insurance Agency in
 Hoisington, which later transitioned to the Mawhiney Insurance Agency.&nbsp;
 He served area residents with their insurance needs until his 
retirement in 1992.&nbsp; Bill was an active member of the Hoisington First 
United Methodist Church and served as a Barton County Community College 
trustee for several years. He officiated Nebraska and Kansas high school
 football games for 48 years.&nbsp; In his younger years, Bill was an 
accomplished athlete, holding many records and reaching the pinnacle of 
being professionally drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies. Bill loved 
his family, friends and home.&nbsp; He loved his vegetable garden, especially
 his tomatoes and delighted in giving tractor rides to his grandchildren
 and great grandchildren. He was an avid sports fan and loved to watch 
whatever game was on. He and Alberta traveled with their close friends 
to K-State games, with the college trustees and on their own taking 
several bus tours as well as visiting family.&nbsp; He had coffee with his 
cronies twice a day for many years and delivered meals to seniors as 
well.&nbsp; He was a friend to all and greeted everyone with a warm smile and
 twinkle in his eye.

Survivors include: his wife of the home, Alberta Ann Mawhiney; two 
sons, Mark Mawhiney and wife Kim of Overland Park, Kansas, and Brad 
Mawhiney and wife Cyndi of Gardner, Kansas; two daughters, Janet Koester
 and husband Duane of Hoisington, Kansas, and Lisa Baum and husband Bob 
of Great Bend, Kansas; nine grandchildren, Brett Mawhiney and wife Kati,
 Blair Uriell and husband Brandon, Megan Bray and husband Jerron, Brian 
Koester and wife Brooke, Audrey Koester, Sarah Lober and husband Kyle, 
Allison Klingenberg and husband Grant, Amanda Malone and husband Jake, 
and Matt Mawhiney and wife Jaci; and 16 great grandchildren.&nbsp; He was 
preceded in passing by one brother, Gerald Madison Mawhiney and by two 
sisters, Sara Florine Woodward and Freda Jane Warbinton.&nbsp;

Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 2, 2021, at First 
United Methodist Church in Hoisington with Rev. Chris Lehew and Chaplain
 Jeffrey Owen presiding.&nbsp; The family will receive friends prior to the

Bill J. Mawhiney

Keith Allen Wilson of WaKeeney, KS was born March 15th, 1963, and passed away on June 7th at Trego County-Lemke Memorial Hospital, WaKeeney, KS.

Keith was son to Carolyn Frances Wright and the late Robert Thorine 
Wilson, husband to Natalie Wilson, brother to Stacy Morris, Christopher 
Wilson and the late Bambi Wilson. Father to Andrew James Wilson, Joshua 
Fierek, Brianna Fierek and Shanna Martinez, and has joined his son Jacob
 in heaven. His memory will live on with his 10 grandchildren.

Keith was the life force and guide to his family. Keith spent the 
majority of his life living in Colorado before moving to WaKeeney, KS in
 2016 where he and Natalie decided to plant their retired roots.&nbsp;

In remembrance of Keith, we will be celebrating his life on July 3rd, 2021, at the Park in WaKeeney, KS at 11 AM.

A. Sharon Linder Mullen, age 85, passed away on Friday, May 7, 2021, 
at the Wichita County Health Center in Leoti, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on 
June 6, 1935, at the rural home of her paternal grandfather, Emil 
Linder, in Dickinson County, Kansas.&nbsp; Sharon was the oldest child of 
Albert and Mabel Burr Linder.&nbsp; She graduated from high school in May of 
1953 in Seibert, Colorado.

Sharon was married to Leonard L. Mullen in Raton, New Mexico on 
December 29, 1951.&nbsp; To this union were born three sons and one daughter,
 Rick, Kevin, Shane, and Kandice.&nbsp; They moved to Wichita county in March
 of 1956 where they resided to the present.

She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church where she 
had served as elder, deacon, and co-moderator of United Presbyterian 
Women and the 3 church team.

Sharon was a life member of McCowen Crouch #6952 VFW Auxiliary where 
she served as Chaplain&nbsp;and Secretary/Treasurer.&nbsp; She was a trustee in 
the 6th District Auxiliary and also a member of the Wichita County 
Health Center volunteers.

Sharon is survived by two sons; Rick &amp; Patty Mullen of 
Plainville, Kansas, Kevin &amp; Kathy Mullen of Leoti, Kansas, and one 
daughter, Kandice McCabe of Pueblo, Colorado, and a daughter-in-law, 
Cindy Mullen of Oakley, Kansas.&nbsp; Eight Grandchildren and Seventeen Great
 Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, spouse, and one son, Shane Mullen.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 11, 2021, at
 the First United Presbyterian Church in Leoti, Kansas with the Pastor 
Stephen Morefield presiding.&nbsp; Services will be streamed live on Facebook

Longtime Goodland, KS resident Mark Shane Peden, 60, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Goodland on May 24, 2021.

Mark was born on August 21, 1960, in Gothenburg, NE to Gordon and Vicki (Hoyt) Peden.&nbsp; He was one of three children.&nbsp; He attended school in Cozad, NE and graduated from Cozad High School in 1978. After graduating high school, he started farming, something that he truly loved, and continued to do so up until his death.

Some of his favorite hobbies were racing racecars, shooting guns, driving around and being a mechanic.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Survivors include his three children; John (Lexi Sims) Peden of Goodland, KS Taylor (John) Meitl of Jennings, KS and Jamie Peden of Tremonton, UT.&nbsp; He is also survived by his father Gordon Peden of Cozad, NE, his mother Vicki Peden of Kearney, NE, one brother Cody (Debra) Peden of Cozad, NE, a sister Teri (Tim) Schmeeckle of Gothenburg, NE, and four grandchildren.

Mark Shane Peden

Curtis Lee Eicher, 86, of Colby, died Saturday, June 5, 2021, at 
Citizens Medical Center. He was born March 7, 1935, on a farm north of 
Brewster to Harry and Lois (McArthur) Eicher. He attended the Prairie 
Gem School, and at 6 years old, he drove a pickup to school each morning
 containing the school’s water supply. He graduated from Brewster High 
School, where he drove the school bus starting his sophomore year. 
He followed his older sister to the University of Colorado in Boulder, 
but after a semester he was homesick and returned to Kansas. That fall, 
he joined the U.S. Army before being drafted and served two years at a 
base in Gary, Ind. After completing his service, he returned to Kansas 
State University, where he flunked ballroom dancing, but somehow 
convinced someone to substitute welding for an English requirement so 
that he could be awarded a bachelor’s degree in feed technology with an 
administration option. 
On Aug. 16, 1959, he married Beverly Sims. They returned to live on the 
farm in a house near his parents. He was elected to the Brewster School 
Board and was appointed to the board of the Goodland vocational 
technical school. 
He had planned to spend his life farming with his father but driving the
 tractor aggravated a previous back injury. After surgery, he looked for
 a less physically demanding career and wound up with a job interview 
for a position as bank examiner for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. 
When he told the interviewer he had a background in agriculture and 
wanted to live and work in Northwest Kansas, he was hired on the spot. 
He considered bankers among the smartest people he knew, but he worked 
for FDIC during a 30-year period when many banks had to be closed. He 
spent his weeks traveling with fellow examiners, often eating tamales or
 other delicacies straight out of the can. On weekends, he returned home
 to Colby, where the world’s best cook awaited. 
After his retirement, he became a master gardener and an excellent cook 
himself. He was known to his grandchildren as HoHo and never failed to 
please them with his chicken enchiladas. 
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Kenneth Eicher; and 
three sisters, Lillian Buckner, Edith Taylor and Esther Eicher. 
He is survived by his wife, Beverly, of the home; a son, Eric Eicher, of
 Colby; a daughter, Erin (Randy) Mathews, of Colby; and grandchildren 
Sabrina and Lear Eicher and their mother, Vanessa, and Brady, Graham and
 Reece Mathews. 
A celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 
14, at the Colby United Methodist Church. Memorials are suggested to the

Betty Ione (DeVore) Laubhan, 95, of Russell, Kansas, and formerly of 
Gage, Oklahoma, passed away Monday, June 7, 2021, at the Russell Regional
 Hospital.

Betty was born January 29, 1926, in Russell County, Kansas.&nbsp; She was 
the youngest of six children born to Verne and Eva Grace (Brown) 
DeVore.&nbsp; She grew up and attended school in Gage Oklahoma and graduated 
from Gage High School.

Betty was united in marriage to Fred George Laubhan, Jr. on May 2, 
1948, in Canadian, Texas.&nbsp; This union was blessed with two daughters; 
Deborah and Jane.&nbsp; They made their home in Gage.&nbsp; Fred preceded her in

Betty was the Ellis County, Oklahoma Tag Agent for many years.&nbsp; She 
also was a secretary for Texaco and frequently helped Fred with his Dry 
Cleaning business.&nbsp; She was a member of the Church of Christ in Gage and
 in Russell.&nbsp; She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi.&nbsp; She enjoyed playing 
Bridge with the local Bridge Club, doing jigsaw puzzles and attending 
her grandchildren’s events.&nbsp; She was a very social person that knew no 
stranger.

Betty’s surviving family include her two daughters, Deborah Greene 
(Stanley) of El Dorado, Kansas and Jane Carter (Jim) of Russell, Kansas;
 six grandchildren, Darcy Fowler, Jordan Carter, Julie Counts (Chad), 
Colette Greene, Mason Greene (Caitlin) and Brooke Hebert (Doug); and 
twelve great grandchildren.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband Fred; grandson 
Joey Carter, two brothers, Wayne DeVore and Keith DeVore; and three 
sisters, Hazel DeVore, Evelyn Fishgrab and Alene DeVore.

A Graveside Service will be held at 1:00 PM, Tuesday, June 15, 2021 
at the Gage Cemetery in Gage, Oklahoma.&nbsp; No visitation will be held.&nbsp; 


Memorials may be given to the Church of Christ of Russell, Kansas, and 
sent in care of the mortuary.&nbsp; Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of 
Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

the youngest of six children born to Verne and Eva Grace (Brown)

from Gage High School.Betty was united in marriage to Fred George Laubhan, Jr. on May 2, 
1948, in Canadian, Texas.&nbsp; This union was blessed with two daughters; 
Deborah and Jane.&nbsp; They made their home in Gage.&nbsp; Fred preceded her in

Betty Ione (DeVore) Laubhan

Arlyn J. Schumacher of Victoria, age 82, died Monday, June 7, 2021, at the Good Samaritan Society of Ellis Nursing Home.&nbsp; He was born March 13, 1939, in Pfeifer to Wendelin and Anna (Schmidt) Schumacher.&nbsp; He married Clarita M. (Dreiling) on September 13, 1958, in Victoria.

He was a bricklayer for 50 years and owned and operated Arlyn Schumacher Masonry.

Arlyn grew up and attended grade school in Pfeifer, and attended Schoenchen High School, then was a 1957 graduate of St. Joseph Military Academy in Hays.&nbsp; He served 6 and ½ years in the Kansas National Guard, and was a member of The Basilica of St. Fidelis.&nbsp; He enjoyed camping, boating, hunting and fishing.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Clarita Schumacher, of the home; one daughter, Michele Unrein and husband Glen, Victoria, KS; three brothers, Laverne Schumacher and wife, Jane, Hays, KS; Dennis Schumacher and wife, Kathy, Hays, KS; Wendy Schumacher and wife, Carol, Hays, KS; four grandchildren, Audrey Lewis (Jesse); Cory Unrein (Tiffany); Amber Younger (Joel); and Courtney Unrein; nine great grandchildren, Braden Lewis; Keaton Lewis; Jaxon Lewis; Addilyn Lewis; Abby Bronson; Max Unrein; Kimber Younger; Emery Younger; and Jayce Younger.&nbsp;

Arlyn was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Kimberly Sue Schumacher; one sister, Twila Knight; and one infant brother, Vearl Joseph Schumacher.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, June 12, 2021, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis Victoria, Kansas with Father James Moster O.F.M. Cap. officiating.&nbsp;

Burial will be in St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria with military honors by the Victoria V.F.W. Post #1751.

A vigil service and a Victoria Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 7:00 P.M. Friday, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M. Friday, and from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. Saturday, all at The Basilica of St. Fidelis.&nbsp;
