David Wayne Schmidt, age 77, of Lincoln, Nebraska, went to be with God on Tuesday, June 22, 2021. David was born September 10, 1943 to Simon J. Schmidt and Martha (Koehn) Schmidt.

David worked in Social Services for 40 years with his career ending in retirement in Hays, Kansas at the Ellis County Social Services agency. His Masters Degree was in Social Services from Kansas University. He loved singing, walking and mountain climbing. His favorite place for mountain climbing was Colorado, and singing in church as a solo's and in group singing. But, in the midst of all this, his most favorite thing, was taking care of his family.

This includes his loving wife, Linda (Alger), daughters Marla Dawn Schmidt and Cheryl Denise Dunn (Shaun, whom he loved dearly), two granddaughters: Abrah Corinne and Thalia Renee Dunn (the joy of his heart).

He is also survived by his sister, Marjorie Schmidt Matthews (Ronald L.) and brother Ronald G. Schmidt (Linda) and nieces Erica Frans (Steve) and Carrie Schmidt.

He is proceeded in death by his parents; Simon J. Schmidt and mother Martha (Koehn) Schmidt and brother Arvid J. Schmidt and step-mother, Rose. Grandparents; David C. and Anna (Gossen) Koehn and Abraham J. and Sarah Schmidt.

In the loving care of his family, Arvon John Marcotte, age 85 of 
Nebraska City passed away on Sunday, June 13, 2021, at his daughter’s 
home in Omaha.

Arvon was born on November 24, 1935, to John J. and Rosa A. 
(Balthazor) Marcotte at their home in Zurich, KS. He was the youngest of
 eight children. Throughout childhood he enjoyed serving daily mass, 
fishing with his father, and developing his love of sports. He graduated
 from Palco High School in Palco, KS with the class of 1953.&nbsp; Arvon 
entered the United States Army on November 13, 1958, where he traveled 
Europe as a baseball pitcher for NACOM, proudly serving his country, 
until his honorable discharge on October 21, 1960.

On August 25, 1962, Arvon was united in marriage to the love of his 
life, Luella Marie Pfeifer in Damar, KS. They were blessed with four 
children: Karla, Jeff, Mark and Janelle.&nbsp; Arvon and Lu moved to Nebraska
 City in 1974. In Nebraska City, Arvon owned and operated Farmers Bank, 
served a term as president of Nebraska Bankers Association, and retired 
from banking in 2015 after a career of nearly 60 years.

Although Arvon cherished his banking career, his greatest love was 
his family. Arvon had an immense capacity for love. He was kind, 
patient, generous, friendly and honest.&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lu Marcotte of Nebraska City;
 children:&nbsp; Karla Townley (Joseph) of Omaha, NE, Jeff Marcotte (Anne) of
 Omaha, NE, Mark Marcotte (Rosie) of Bellevue, NE and Janelle Gress 
(Mike) of Nebraska City; 13 grandchildren:&nbsp; Claire, Annie (Matt), Ellen,
 Mary, James, Lizzy, Johnny, Joe, Emily, Renee, Matt, Tom and Alex; 
sister Gloria Hamel (Gary) of El Dorado, KS; sister-in-law Marietta 
Marcotte of Hartford, AR; sisters and brothers-in-law:&nbsp; Virginia Roberts
 (Jerry) of Liberal, KS, Donna Bealby (Steve) of Kansas City, MO, Leon

officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Nebraska City
 with Military Honors conducted by the Nebraska Army National Guard 
Funeral Honors Detail.

The family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on 
Thursday, June 17, 2021 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.&nbsp; A Rosary will be

Phillipsburg resident Lee Jennings passed away on Wednesday, June 23,
 2021, at the Phillips County Hospital, Phillipsburg, at the age of 91.

He was born August 20, 1929, in Phillipsburg, KS the son of Vernon O. 
and Allie A. (Blessman) Jennings.&nbsp; He served in the United States Army.

On December 10, 1950, he was united in marriage to Patsy Ann 
Faulkender.&nbsp; To this union, seven children were born: LeAnn, Sandy, 
Terri, Randy, Connie, Mike, and Stacey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Patsy; son Randy; 
daughters LeAnn Mollet and Connie Flores; six brothers Owasa, Fred, 
Leonard, Lorrance, Donald, Ora, and Delvin; and three sisters Francis 
Maxfield, Dorothy Ostrander, and Ruth Neske.

Survivors include his son Mike Jennings of Phillipsburg; daughters 
Sandy Goscha of Bartlesville, OK, Terry Kendall of Baldwin City, KS, and
 Stacey Jennings of Phillipsburg; 10 grandchildren; 19 great 
grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren.

There will be a private family service on Friday morning.&nbsp; The family
 would like to invite friends to the family home for a time of 
fellowship with a luncheon being served from noon until 2 p.m. Friday. 
&nbsp;&nbsp;Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.&nbsp;

Marlin Gene “Mark” Foster passed away on Tuesday, June 29, 2021, at the 
Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas at the age of 84. He was born to 
Ivan and Emma (Ziems) Foster on March 19, 1937, in Arapahoe, Nebraska. 
Mark was blessed with four children: Rick, Randy, Rhonda, and Rebecca.
 Mark grew up in Nebraska and attended school in Arapahoe. In his 
early adult years, he moved to several places including Phillipsburg, 
Grand Island, Kearney, Hill City, and others before settling into 
Stockton about 15 years ago. He was a talented autobody mechanic and 
all-around handyman. He had an eye for detail and made sure things were 
done the right way, his way. Mark rarely missed coffee in the morning at
 Doug’s with his buddies, he kept a full cup from the beginning of the 
day until the day was done. Outside of his love for fixing up cars he 
had a passion for hunting and boat fishing. He competed in several 
fishing tournaments and has many trophies to show for it. Mark loved 
dogs and enjoyed training them to hunt. He trained a lot of Labrador 
Retrievers, but his friends and family will always remember a Weimaraner
 named Sarge and his American Brittany, Ticker. Mark had a “sure of 
himself” way about him, but if you ask the grandkids or his dogs, there 
was a softer side. 11 years of Mark’s life was dedicated to care for his
 late wife Doris while she was battling Alzheimer’s. Mark stayed by her 
side and made sure she was properly taken care of in their home until 
the day she passed away in 2010.
 Mark will be greatly missed by all who got to know him, but his 
memory will live on in our hearts and minds. Through his life he taught 
us that a job worth doing, is a job worth doing well, to enjoy the 
little things, and to serve God and one another.

Marlin Gene 'Mark' Foster

Jane D. Ball, wife of Gene R. Ball, 84, passed away Monday, June 28, 2021.

Jane graduated from High School in Ransom, Kansas in 1955 and had a 
passion for music.&nbsp; She then graduated from the University of Kansas in 
1958 with a BS in Language Arts and Secondary Education.&nbsp; During her 
work career, Jane excelled as a Jr. High School teacher in Lindale, 
Texas, she worked as District Clerk with Eastman Whipstock and Hunt 
Energy, and she was an Office Manager with various companies.

Jane was a talented musician who used her superb Vocal and Piano 
skills to bring life and joy to all who knew her.&nbsp; She enjoyed 
entertaining and caring for others, and she always did so with a 
creative and ever-present loving spirit.&nbsp; Jane brought 
attention-to-detail and professionalism to everything she did.&nbsp;

Left to cherish Jane’s memory are Gene R. Ball, her husband of 63 
years; her loving children, Cynthia R. Martin, Gregory M. Ball, and Dr. 
Sheldon L. Ball; grandchildren Jeffrey E. Crook and Tiffany R. Martin; 
great-grandchild Rylee M. Crook; and extended family members.

Jane D. Ball

Faye Ellen Anderson, age 87, died on September 25, 2020, at Garden 
Valley Retirement Village in Garden City, KS. She was preceded in death 
by her parents, brother Ben, husband Carol (Andy) N. Anderson, and 
earlier this year by her sons Nils and Jerry. She is survived locally by
 her daughter Kristin and grandson Zachary, sons Mark O. Anderson (wife 
Susan) of Bellevue, WA and Charles Anderson of Naples, FL, sister Lou 
Hoover (husband Rod) of Topeka, KS, and grandsons Matthew (San 
Francisco), Christopher, and Grant (Chicago).&nbsp;

Faye Ellen was born on July 12, 1933 in Natoma, KS to Louis Beisner 
and Lila Hankins. &nbsp;She met husband Andy there directing the high school 
band and vocal music and coaching football. They married on May 20, 1953
 and were together for 41 years. &nbsp;In Natoma, she worked with her mother,
 the editor of the Natoma-Luray Independent newspaper. They later lived 
in Effingham and Russell, where she was activities secretary at the high
 school.&nbsp; They moved to Garden City in 1970, where Andy taught vocal 
music at Garden City Community College and Faye Ellen worked, first in 
the&nbsp;Santa Fe Trail Council, BSA office and then&nbsp;as window clerk until 
her retirement with the United States Postal Service. &nbsp;

Faye Ellen was the ultimate Mother and beloved Grandmother - steady, 
calm, resilient, positive, patient, curious, smart, loving, and 
generous. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Finney 
County Senior Center, Order of the Eastern Star, church circles, and the
 Garden City Civic Choral Union.&nbsp; Favorite family activities were 
playing cards and games and working puzzles together. She was a fierce 
bridge player, playing weekly with dear friends. She enjoyed riding 
bikes with Zach and tending her garden.

Faye Ellen remained the active, loving caregiver of her household 
into 2020, seeing her special son Nils safely into God’s hands.&nbsp;&nbsp;She 
cared deeply for those facing challenges in life. Faye Ellen knew that, 
with the Covid-19 pandemic, the still postponed memorial service for 
Nils and then unexpectedly, heartbreakingly Jerry,&nbsp; would probably, in 
the end, include her. She can now rest in peace and join Nils, Jerry, 
Andy, and others in Heaven.&nbsp;

The memorial service for Nils, Jerry, and Faye Ellen Anderson will be
 held on Wednesday, July 14, 2021, at 2 pm at First United Methodist 
Church in Garden City, Kansas.

Erlyn Marcene Donner Mattley passed from this life June 23, 2021, in Elk City, Oklahoma, at the age of 90 years, 10 months, and 14 days. Erlyn was born at home August 9, 1930, the youngest of four, to her parents, Vern and Nana (Johnson) Donner in Garfield County, Nebraska.

Erlyn grew up on the Cedar River north of Ericson, NE, and graduated from Burwell High School, received Normal Training and taught in a one room school for two years. She was quite the horsewoman and was a Nebraska’s Big Rodeo queen contestant in 1947. April 9, 1950, Erlyn was married to Dale Mattley in Burwell, NE, and five children were born to this union: Renetta, Rachel, Ronda, Ryan, and Renee’.

Dale and Erlyn operated a retail business in Burwell for 33 years, 1957-1990. Erlyn was a long time active member of Burwell’s First Christian Church where she taught Sunday School, was a member of the Worker’s Society, helped with funeral dinners, and many other activities of the church. Highlights of their life together were the trips they made to the Holy Land, the Philippines which included a side trip to Communist China and Hong Kong, to Donner Pass near Truckee, CA., and camping with the kids and grandkids at Lake McConaughy.

Survivors include her husband, Dale of the home; her children: Renetta and Kerry Hookstra, Sayre, OK; Rachel Dye, Tulsa, OK; Ronda Mattley, Nampa, ID; Ryan Mattley, Ft. Collins, CO; and Renee Johnson, Ft. Collins, CO; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

Erlyn was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters, and one grandchild.

A visitation and viewing is set for Thursday, July 1 from 5-8 p.m. at Domoney Funeral Home in Downs, KS. Graveside service will be held at Cottonwood Cemetery at Burwell, NE, 11:30 a.m., Friday, July 2.

Erlyn Mattley

Phyllis Joan Taylor passed away on June 29, 2021, at the Sheridan County 
Long Term Care following a short illness. Joan (pronounced as “Jo-ann”)
 was born on her family’s farm northwest of Hoxie, Kansas on December 
30, 1940, to Willard and Eula (Hamilton) Farber. Joan was the fifth of 
eight children--and the oldest girl. She would joke that she never 
recognized herself in pictures because that was the only time she wore a
 dress (she usually wore her older brother’s hand-me down overalls.) 
 Joan attended the Consolidated #2 country school near her home, 
starting first grade when she was 5 years old. She graduated from 
Sheridan Community High School as valedictorian of her class in 1958 and
 received her degree in teaching from Kansas State Teachers College in 
Emporia, Kansas in 1961. She taught Algebra and General Mathematics at 
Campus High School in Wichita, Kansas. Then she returned to Hoxie to 
marry and taught Junior High at the Hoxie Grade School for two years 
before staying home to raise her family.
 Joan married Ben Taylor on July 27, 1963, at the First Presbyterian 
Church in Hoxie. They made their home on his grandparent’s farm 4 ½ 
miles east of Hoxie. Together, they built Taylor Farms -- he as the 
farmer &amp; rancher and she as the one who could have a meal on the 
table or out to the field at any time of day, move irrigation pipe, keep
 the books, and be on call to help move machinery or cattle. For 
several years she worked at the Hoxie and Hill City Sale Barns and 
enjoyed meeting all the cattle buyers.
 Joan’s true calling was that of an educator. Her youngest sister 
was her first student…playing school with her and teaching her sight 
words. She was a patient teacher, spending many nights calmly managing 
her daughters’ tears and temper tantrums while practicing math flash 
cards, timed tests, algebra, and geometry. Even after leaving her 
teaching position at the school, Joan tutored students, usually in math,
 every year and never asked families for payment. Now, scores of 
previous students know how far Train A (traveling 30 MPH) was from the 
station when overtaken by Train B (traveling 40 MPH). In recent years, 
Joan worked part time at the Hoxie Grade School library. Although 
reshelving books could be a chore…she loved being around the kids and 
the teachers.
 Joan also applied her gifts as a teacher at her church. She taught 
Sunday School classes for children and adults, directed the Vacation 
Bible School programs, planned Christmas programs and services, and 
taught Bible studies. Most recently, she created a self-guided art 
museum display depicting the life of Jesus through varied artwork. She 
was always looking for new and creative ways to engage her students and 
the children of the church…many people still remember the life-sized 
camels that she made for the Wise Men to ride during a Christmas 
program!
 Joan was an active member of her church, serving as an elder, 
committee member, and as the head of the Christian Education committee. 
 She was also a member and officer of Presbyterian Women. She was 
involved in many other community activities and committees such as 4-H, 
Sheridan County Historical Society, Friends of the Library, and the 
Sheridan County Hospital Auxiliary. Joan also served on the USD 412 
Board of Education.
 In her spare time, Joan battled the weeds in her garden, completed 
jigsaw puzzles, and enjoyed cooking for her family. She read and 
studied her Bible daily. She challenged herself by learning new crafts 
and creative skills…taking classes in quilting, cake decorating, and 
furniture refinishing and she loved solving logic and math puzzles. 
She discovered that she loved to golf and would practice in the pasture 
behind their house. When her grandchildren were young, she accompanied 
them on numerous trips, digging for dinosaur bones, watching Civil War 
re-enactments, visiting museums and historical landmarks, and taking 
more trips to the Rolling Hills Zoo than she could count. She was 
willing to do anything with her grandchildren—including riding every 
single ride at Disney World --even the Tower of Terror! 
 Preceding Joan in death was her husband Ben, her grandson Michael 
Borella, her parents Willard &amp; Eula Farber, her brothers Bill, 
Monte, Ford, and Jim Farber and her sister, Rose (Farber) Wagoner. 
 Left to grieve her loss are her daughters-- Tamara (Dr. Daniel 
Coyne) of St. Louis, MO and Cyndie (Roger Aumiller) of Hoxie; 
grandchildren Nicholas Borella (Christine) and Matthew Borella of St. 
Louis, MO; Katie (Lance Weis) and Quinn Aumiller of Hoxie; Roman King 
(Jill Kraus) of Fort Worth, TX; PFC Ben Aumiller of Twentynine Palms, 
CA; great-grandchildren June Weis and Ezra Borella; brother Kyle Farber 
of Lodgepole, NE; sister Linda (Bob Randolph) of Berryton, KS; 
sister-in-law Mary (Dr. Richard Mosier) of Claremore, OK; many nieces,

 Visitation will be at the Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home on Monday, 
July 5, 2021, from 9:00 am– 12:30 pm. Funeral services will follow at

Longtime Kanorado, KS resident Juan Peña, 61, passed away on Monday, June 28, 2021, at his home in Kanorado.

Juan was born on July 4, 1959, in Lubbock County, TX to Amador and 
Francesca (Aguirre) Peña.&nbsp; He was one of twelve children.&nbsp; He attended 
school through the 2nd grade.&nbsp; He worked for many years as a farmhand.&nbsp;

He was a metal collector and enjoyed fishing, listening to oldies, 
gardening, cruising around town and loved being with family and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents, four brothers and one sister.

He is survived by his two children Cynthia Peña of Alabama, Juan 
(Lily) Peña, Jr. of Oklahoma; his six siblings; Dora Kicklighter, Robert
 Peña, Angelita Molina and Domingo Peña all of Alabama, and Linda Molina
 and Tirzo Peña of Florida; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and 
grandchildren.

Juan Peña

Terry Lynn Gabel, 56, passed away on June 28, 2021, at the Good 
Samaritan Society in Ellis, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on May 3, 1965, in Ness 
City, Kansas the son of Milton and Reita (Bessel) Gabel.

Terry was a farm hand and a truck driver. He was a 1983 graduate of Ness City High School.

Survivors include 4 brothers, Ronnie (Marcia) Gabel of Ness City, 
Gary (Rhonda) Gabel of Kansas City, Kelly (Monica) Gabel of Hays, Tim 
Gabel of Ness City; and 2 sisters, Debbie Overrocker of Garden City, and
 Sharon (Norman) Castor of Ness City. He was preceded in death by his 
parents, a brother, and 2 sisters.

Yoshie Ellis, age 77 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away on June 22, 2021, at her home in Great Bend.&nbsp; Yoshie was born on October 19, 1943, at Osaka, Japan to Kiyoshi and Kuneno Hamana.&nbsp; She was united in marriage to Walter “Holly” Ellis on March 11, 1963, at Fukuoka, Japan and the couple lived in Hawaii, Chicago, and Portland, Oregon before moving to Great Bend in 1978.&nbsp; Her husband “Holly” preceded her in death on July 24, 2006.&nbsp; Yoshie loved to read and go see movies at the theater, and thoroughly enjoyed going to casinos.

Survivors include three nephews:&nbsp; J.L. (and wife Cindy) Ellis of Salina, Kansas, Darrell Ellis of Great Bend, Kansas, and Todd (and wife June) Ellis of Great Bend, Kansas; two nieces:&nbsp; Judy Johnson and Nancy Closky, both of Goose Creek, South Carolina; many great nieces and nephews; one brother-in-law Gary Ellis of Great Bend, Kansas.&nbsp; Yoshie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one sister.

Funeral Services will be held at Charter Funerals in Great Bend, Kansas at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, July 6, 2021 with Pastor Larry J. Schumacher officiating.&nbsp; Visitation will be for two hours prior to the service (12:00 Noon to 2:00 PM). Wanda Verle Wycoff, age 102, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, passed away peacefully on 
Saturday, June 26, 2021, at the Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, 
Cheyenne, WY. Wanda Verle Challis was born on November 21, 1918,&nbsp; in rural Washington County, (near Cope), Colorado to Gail and Etta 
Challis, the second of five children.&nbsp; Wanda spent her adolescent 
years on the family farm in nearby Kit Carson County, Colorado until the
 family moved to a farm in Logan County, Kansas in 1928.&nbsp; Wanda attended
 Russell Springs High School and graduated in 1936.&nbsp; As a young woman 
growing up during the Great Depression, Wanda learned the values of 
frugality, hard work, and being self-sufficient.&nbsp; She loved reading 
(often burning the midnight oil), playing piano, participating in school
 sports and activities, and helping the family on their farm. In 
1937, Wanda and Raymond L. Wycoff were married by the Justice of the 
Peace at the Scott County Courthouse in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; While 
living in Russell Springs, five children were born.&nbsp; Bonnie Gayle, Dina 
Rae, Ellen Louise, Willetta June (Billie), and Raymond Alva. In 
1948, the family moved to Oakley, Kansas where all of Wanda’s children 
attended Oakley Public Schools.&nbsp; Wanda was involved in the children’s 
school activities as well as being a member of Oakley Garden Club, the 
United Methodist Church, and an avid bowler on State Championship teams. In
 1970, Wanda moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming to begin a new chapter in her 
life.&nbsp; She worked in retail clothing, then earned her real estate and 
insurance licenses, and spent 17 years working in the clerical 
department at Depaul Hospital, where she retired in 1998. Wanda 
was a long-time member of the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, loved playing
 bridge and golf, sewing, and most of all, hosting family re-unions.&nbsp; 
Family was her life!&nbsp; Wanda often traveled to Kansas, visiting her 
family in Oakley – the place she always called “hometown”. After 
retirement, Wanda spent her remaining years at her home on Willow Drive,
 enjoying her flower and vegetable garden and spending time with family 
and friends. Wanda was preceded in death by her parents, Gail and
 Etta; her siblings:&nbsp; Rodell Challis, Stanley Challis, June Challis, and
 Evelyn Trutanich; her husband, Raymond Wycoff, her daughter, Billie 
Miller; granddaughter, Amy Broyles, great-grandson, Nick Moeder, and 
sons-in-law:&nbsp; Jack Thomas and Larry Dinkel. Wanda is survived by 
her children:&nbsp; Bonnie Tobin of Colchester, Vermont; Dina Dinkel of 
Oakley, Kansas; Ellen Thomas of Cheyenne, Wyoming; and Raymond Wycoff 
(Virginia Adradna) of Cheyenne, Wyoming; 16 grandchildren, 26 
great-grandchildren, 7 great-great-grandchildren, and son-in-law, Sonny 
Miller of Ft. Collins, Colorado. Wanda was a vibrant, active, 
warm, family-loving soul – always there to lend a hand and a shining

Rita Joanne Lillard, was born to Kenneth and Janice (Stackhouse) Coker on August 1, 1956, in Hoisington, KS.&nbsp;

Rita married David 
LaMonte Lillard on March 03, 1974. They raised their two children, 
LaMonte &amp; Virginia “Jenni”, in her home town of Hoisington, KS, 
where she worked in the nursing home rising in the ranks until she 
earned her Associates degree of Nursing from Barton County Community 
College and began work as a Registered Nurse. They later moved to 
Houston, TX, where David and his brother George started Discovery 
Systems Computer Company, and Rita worked as the primary book keeper, as
 well as continuing to work as a nurse. David was the love of her life, 
married for 47 years, they shared a strong Christian faith and they 
enjoyed many activities together, including traveling, going to 
restaurants, and attending the Airshow. Above all Rita whole heartedly 
loved her family, especially her two children and four grandchildren, 
and of course her animals. Her grandchildren loved her hugs, and the 
adventures they went on, even if it was just a trip out for ice cream. 
They loved her Easter baskets, and blowing bubbles together, and her 
cooking, especially her ham, baked beans, and deviled eggs.

She passed away on June 20, 2021, at 9:25 a.m. at the age of 64 being murdered, along with her daughter.

She is survived by her
 husband, David Lillard of the home; her son, LaMonte Lillard (Crystal) 
Katy, TX; her grandchildren, Anja, John, Clara, and Emma Lillard; her 
brothers, Keith Coker, Hoisington, KS, and Richard Coker (Deanna) 
Hutchinson, KS; her sisters, Cheryl Coker, Hutchinson, KS, and Nancy 
Shives (Ronnie), Hoisington, KS; a brother-in-law, George Lillard 
(Jeanette) Houston, TX; her sisters-in-law, Deloise Paris, Greenville, 
TX, and Sylvia Mauldin, Ft. Worth, TX; and many beloved nieces and 
nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her 
daughter, Virginia Lillard; her parent; a brother, Gerald Coker; and 
brothers-in-law, Gerald Lillard, and Pete Paris.

Virginia “Jenni” Lillian Lillard, was born to David &amp; Rita (Coker) Lillard on October 16, 1981, in Great Bend, KS.&nbsp;

She grew up in 
Hoisington, KS, before her family moved to Houston, TX, where she 
graduated high school. She had a strong love of animals from a very 
young age, so after high school she attended Bel-Rea Institute of Animal
 Technology in Denver. She worked as a Veterinary Technician for many 
years, before deciding that she also wanted to “be the boss” so she 
decided to get her Bachelor of Administration from Strayer University 
where she graduated Suma Cum Laude! Jenni devoted her life’s work to 
helping animals wherever she went, and was known as “The Cat Whisperer.”
 She was a loving friend, daughter, sister and Aunt, and her nieces and 
nephew adored her. She had a strong Christian faith, which showed not 
only in her deep love of her family and animals, but also in how she 
cared for the owners of her patients. She was as soft hearted as she was
 strong minded, and those that loved her admired her for her fierceness,
 honesty, and compassion.

She passed away on June 20, 2021, at 9:25 a.m. at the age of 39 being murdered, along with her mother.

She is survived by her
 father, David Lillard, Houston, TX; a brother, LaMonte Lillard

Phyllis 'Joan' (Farber) Taylor

Frank James Herbel, 55, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Saturday, June 26, 2021, at his residence.

Frank was born April 28, 1966, in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; The son of Theodore, Jr., and Bennie Ruth (Neff) Herbel.&nbsp; He grew up in Russell and worked at the Russell Daily News for many years as a delivery boy.&nbsp; Then he worked as a Pressman before the Daily News was sold.&nbsp; Then he worked for Anderson as a Pressman until the office moved onto old Hwy 40.&nbsp; Frank delivered the Hays Daily News for years and for the last five years delivered the Salina Journal. &nbsp;

Frank enjoyed working on his cars and trucks, drawing pictures especially of Dragons. He loved talking to people on his routes, customers or not.&nbsp; His cats always had a special place in his heart.&nbsp; People always wanted to know why Frank’s name did not start with a D like the rest of his brothers and sisters was because he was named after his maternal grandfather, Frank James.

Frank’s surviving family include his father, Theodore Herbel, Jr of Russell, Kansas.; brothers, David E. Jones (Teri) of New Baden, Illinois and Doren D. Herbel (Carol) of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; sister, Dianna D. Herbel of Russell, Kansas; two nieces; two nephews; four grand nieces; and five grand nephews.

Frank was preceded in death by his mother, Bennie Ruth (Neff) Herbel; sister, Debra (Neff) Schneider; and both sets of grandparents.

A Graveside Service and Burial of Ashes will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, July 6, 2021, at the Russell City Cemetery.&nbsp; No visitation will be held.&nbsp; Condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

He loved talking to people on his routes, customers or not.&nbsp; His cats always had a special place in his heart.&nbsp; People always wanted to know why Frank’s name did not start with a D like the rest of his brothers and sisters was because he was named after his maternal grandfather, Frank James.Frank’s surviving family include his father, Theodore Herbel, Jr of Russell, Kansas.; brothers, David E. Jones (Teri) of New Baden, Illinois and Doren D. Herbel (Carol) of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; sister, Dianna D. Frank James Herbel

John Paul "Jack" Larzalere, 82, passed away June 15, 2021, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. &nbsp;

Jack was born on September 10, 1938. He 
was adopted from Catholic Charities in Minneapolis Kansas, by his 
parents Charles and Lucille Larzalere.&nbsp; Jack was raised Catholic, where 
he served as an alter boy for many years.&nbsp; He was an avid sports fan and
 a multi-sport athlete growing up.&nbsp; After graduating from Minneapolis 
High School, Jack attended Fort Hays State University, then went on to 
graduate from The University of Kansas. Jack was a member of the Sigma 
Phi Epsilon Fraternity, and majored in business. After graduation Jack 
met Deanna Martin of Glasco, Kansas on a blind date. They were married 
in 1961. He joined the Army shortly after, and the two lived in North 
Carolina where Jack was stationed first at Ft. Bragg, then overseas in 
Korea. Upon returning from Korea, Jack and Dee moved to Denver Colorado,
 where they had their son Brent.&nbsp; They later relocated back to the 
Kansas City area and had their second child Angela. They spent most of 
their married life in Kansas, with a handful of years in Oklahoma City. 
Jack was a commercial banker for the majority of his career. Jack and 
Dee were married 59 years when Deanna passed away in June 2020,&nbsp; almost a
 year to the day of Jack’s passing.&nbsp;

Jack passed on a love of all things 
sports as well as his competitive spirit to his children. He continued 
playing sports throughout his adult life, engaging in tennis and golf as
 well as other activities.&nbsp; He loved coaching his kids as well as 
attending as many KU, Chiefs and Royals games as he could take in.&nbsp; He 
had a very no-nonsense approach to life.&nbsp; Many remember him for his 
infectious smile and belly laugh. He was loyal, honest, and as tough as 
they come. He loved his family fiercely and supported them in everything
 they did. His two granddaughters were the light of his life. &nbsp;

Jack was preceded in death by his wife 
Deanna Larzalere, his parents Charles and Lucille Larzalere, his sister 
and brother in law Bob and Patricia Jones, brothers Frankie and Richard 
Larzalere, his in-laws George and Irene Martin, sister in law Mary 
Martin, brothers in law Dick, Denny, Don, and Darrel Martin. He is 
survived by his two children Brent Larzalere (spouse Amy) and Angela 
Nielsen (spouse Oliver) as well as his two granddaughters Hayden Nielsen
 and Reilli Nielsen, and his sister in laws Dorothy, Louise, and Betty 
Martin, and Judy Larzalere, along with many nieces and nephews.

Jack will be missed dearly, but his family takes comfort in knowing he is with the Lord, and with his bride. &nbsp;

John Paul 'Jack' Larzalere

Gary “Bubba” Smith, 56, died June 28, 2021, at HaysMed, Hays, 
Kansas.&nbsp; He was born June 24, 1965, the son of Gary Dee and Janice Marie
 (Cates) Smith.&nbsp; Bubba graduated from Hoisington High School in 1983.

On June 4, 1994, he married Dee Ann Smith in Great Bend, Kansas. She survives.

A lifetime Hoisington resident, Bubba worked in many aspects for City
 of Hoisington for 22 years and was most recently the foreman for the 
Water and Sewer Department. He also enjoyed working part time at the 
Liquor Box.&nbsp; Previous to his job with the city he worked as the 
assistant warehouse manager for Orschelon’s Farm and Home.&nbsp; He was a 
union steward for the former IBEW Chapter 304.

Bubba’s love for sports and his daughters led him to be involved in 
many coaching positions, whether it was the Western Kansas Football 
League or Rec Leagues for basketball, softball, and kids wrestling he 
loved it all. He also loved being part of the HHS chain gang for the 
football games, although he wasn’t able to yell at the games. &nbsp;Being 
part of the pit crew with Bullard and Ward Racing at the dirt tracks was
 also something he enjoyed.&nbsp; At Christmas time there were many families 
that he would visit in his red suit and white beard.&nbsp; He loved to cheer 
on the KC Chiefs and Royals and the black #3 Intimidator, Dale 
Earnhardt, Sr.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Dee Ann Smith of the home; 
and three daughters, Presley, Delaney, and Addison Smith of Hoisington; 
mother, Janice Smith of Great Bend; brothers, Michael Smith and wife Jo 
of Great Bend, and Chris Smith and wife Stephanie of St. John; and 
several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gary Dee Smith and a brother, Ricky Smith.

Family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday at the funeral 
home. Friends may sign the book today and until service time.&nbsp; There 
will be no viewing as cremation has taken place.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m., Friday, July 2, 2021, at 
Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Steven Dezotell.

Pauline M. Irsik, 104, passed away from natural causes on Monday, June 28,&nbsp; at the home of her oldest granddaughter Michele Irsik Flax, Hays, 
Kansas. She was surrounded by her loved ones. 
Pauline Mabel Allen was born October 24, 1916, in Howell, Kansas. She was
 preceded in death by her husband Steve Irsik in 1999 and granddaughter 
Annie Irsik in 2008. 
She was also was predeceased by her siblings Horace Allen, Lester Allen, Edna Reynolds, Donald Allen and Eldred Johnson . 
Throughout her lifetime, Pauline witnessed great changes to our world 
including, a woman’s right to vote, Lindbergh's non-stop Atlantic 
flight, the Wall St. Crash and Great depression, devastating wars, moon 
landings and 19 U.S. Presidents. 
Pauline attended High School in Dodge City and later attended Dodge City
 Community College and graduated with an Associates of Arts degree in 
1937. She taught at Royal Country school with seven students and earned 
$60 a month. 
Pauline dated Steve Irsik in 1942 until he left for the military in 
1943. He mailed her engagement ring from boot camp and she didn't see 
him again until 1946. Two weeks after he returned from the war, they 
were married on January 21, 1946. Steve passed away just days shy of 
their 53rd wedding anniversary. 
She was a loving and devoted Mother and Grandmother. She is survived by: Steve Irsik Jr. And wife Kay of Sante Fe, New Mexico, Mike Irsik and 
wife Debbie of Emporia, Kansas, Max Irsik and wife Linda of Flagler 
Beach, Florida, Robert Irsik and wife Ellen of Ingalls, Kansas and Ron 
Irsik and wife Tricia of Columbus, Ohio. 14 grandchildren and 21 great 
grandchildren. 
She was an inspiration to all with her profound faith. She believed “Be 
patriotic Americans and trust in God. We owe him praise every day.” 
Pauline enjoyed quilting, art, gardening, playing bridge, music and 
dance. She led an incredible life and loved camping, hiking and 
traveling. 
She has begun her most beautiful journey to date. 
Her service will take place on Thursday July 1st, 10:30 am at the St. 
Dominic Catholic Church, Garden City, Kansas. Graveside dedication to 
follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. There will be no calling
 hours.

Michael D. Lynch, 62, died June 27, 2021, at Medicine Lodge Memorial 
Hospital.&nbsp; He was born January 30, 1959, in Kansas City, Kansas, the son
 of Thomas B. and Betty I. (Middleton) Lynch.&nbsp;

On November 11, 1978, he married Kathy J. Ricke at the Trinity Baptist Church, Hoisington, Kansas.

A resident of Medicine Lodge since 1996, Mike was a retired field 
technician for Targa Resources.&nbsp; He was also the owner and bartender for
 Mike’s Sports Bar in Medicine Lodge until 2012. Mike was of the Roman 
Catholic faith and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #6618
 of Medicine Lodge.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Kathy J. Ricke; and three 
children, Christopher A. Lynch and wife Casey of Springfield, Ohio, 
Michael D. Lynch, Jr. of Medicine Lodge, and Karen J. Lynch and fiancé 
Greg Sader of Wichita; his mother, Betty Lynch of Great Bend; a brother,
 Thomas Lynch and wife Merrilee of Wichita; four sisters, Mary Johnson 
and husband Kelly of Oak Grove, Missouri, Elizabeth Wooldridge and 
husband Don of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Chris Talbert and husband Larry of 
Great Bend, and Sheryl Lynch of Great Bend; five grandchildren, Madyson,
 Braedon and Gracyn Lynch, and Matthew and McKinnley Piper.

Laura Ann Mazouch, 31, passed away June 24, 2021, at her home in 
Salina. She was born July 31, 1989, at Great Bend, to Dennis &amp; Susan
 (Fiedler) Mazouch.

A resident of Salina for the past several years, Laura grew up in 
Great Bend. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Salina. 
She loved gardening and cooking, as well as drawing and painting. She 
was a proud aunt to her nieces.

Survivors include, her mother, Susan Mazouch of Great Bend; a 
brother, Nick Mazouch of Marquette; a sister, Sara Delgadillo and 
husband Steven of Great Bend; four nieces, Aubryauna, Alivia, Adalina 
and Amilia; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in 
death by her father, Dennis Mazouch; her grandparents, Dennis and 
Eleanor Fiedler, and John and Virginia Mazouch; and an aunt, Roberta 
Fiedler.

Visitation will be held from Noon to 9:00 p.m., Friday, July 2, 2021 
at Bryant Funeral Home, with Vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Mass of

Phillipsburg resident Terry Lynn Gitchel passed away unexpectedly
 Saturday, June 26, 2021, in Phillips County, KS at the age of 64.

Terry was born April 25, 1957, in Phillipsburg, KS the son of Melvin Roy and Anna Louise (Johnson) Gitchel.

He was united in marriage to Donna Kaye Schumacher on October 23, 1982, in Phillipsburg.&nbsp; She survives.

Other survivors include his three daughters Tara Burnham and husband 
Robin of Arvada, CO, Karma Steelsmith and husband Ron of Phillipsburg, 
and Shelby Thomas and husband Andrew of Lawrence, KS; a niece, who was 
like his daughter, Kimberly Krebs of Atwood, KS; nine grandchildren 
&nbsp;Kennedy (Burnham) Burris and husband Brian, Wyatt, Tehya, Garyn, and 
Edwyn Burnham, Kihyna, Kameron, Kymber, and Kendryck Steelsmith; four 
brothers Ralph, Roy, and Rick and wife Sharolyn all of Phillipsburg and 
Don of Hays; and three sisters, Merry Reeh of Oberlin, KS, Sandra 
Johnson and husband Dennis of Agra, KS, and Susan Lacey and husband 
“Bean” of Kenai, AK.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 5, 2021 in the 
Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.&nbsp; Burial will follow in the 
Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Terry will lie in state from noon until 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday 
with the family receiving friends Sunday afternoon from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
 all in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Phillipsburg Little Kids 
Softball and Baseball Programs or the Phillipsburg High School 
Amendment.

Ellen I. Nickel, age 96, passed away on Friday, June 25, 2021, at the
 Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on March 12,
 1925, in Guide Rock, Nebraska, the daughter of Leeman Jonas and Ethel 
Berniece Bailey Lundstedt.&nbsp; Ellen was a resident of Scott City, Kansas,&nbsp; since 1969 moving from Wichita, Kansas.&nbsp; Beginning in 1947, she was a 
nanny for the Johnson family in Salina, Kansas, and then in Wichita, 
Kansas and referred to them as her “Boys."&nbsp; She was a homemaker.

Ellen was a member of the First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas.

On May 11, 1969, she married Richard Henry Nickel in Scott City, 
Kansas.&nbsp; He passed away on September 23, 1974, in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include her One Daughter - Gayla Nickel of Scott City, 
Kansas, One Step-Daughter - Deanna Russell of Brandsville, Missouri, Two
 Granddaughters - Bailey Nickel of Scott City, Kansas, Rita Fisher of&nbsp; 
Mountain Grove, Missouri, One Grandson - Joey Russell of Koshkonong, 
Missouri, Three Boys she raised - Sherman Johnson of Kansas City, 
Kansas, Gaylord Johnson of Naples, Florida, Bradford Johnson of Andale, 
Kansas, Eight Great Grandchildren, and Two Great Great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, Two Brothers, One Sister, 
One Grandson, and Two Great Grandchildren, and three Johnson boys - 
Darwin Johnson, Virgil Johnson, Jr., and Nathan Johnson.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 1, 2021, 
at the First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas with the Rev. Kyle 
Evans presiding.&nbsp; Services will be streamed live at Price and Sons
