Gladys Marie Allen, 107, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2020, at 
Redbud Village in Plainville, KS. She was born on September 12, 1913, in
 Plainville, to Wallace and Mae Anna (Cronin) Phillips. On April 23, 
1938, in Plainville she married her dance partner and best friend Thomas
 C. Allen, a printer and linotype operator at The Plainville Times. They
 rode a train through dust storms to honeymoon in Colorado. Tom and 
Gladys were married 63 years before he died on Nov. 5, 2001. 
 Growing up, she learned to cut hair at her dad’s barber shop in 
Tipton, KS. She cherished a family trip to Estes Park, Colo., and was a 
whiz in physics at St. Boniface High School, Tipton. As a mom, she 
enjoyed sewing all the clothes for her family and her daughters’ 
Barbies, as well as hand-making quilts for everyone. She closely 
followed the travels and adventures of her five children. She was very 
active with Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Plainville, and enjoyed her 
friendships with the ladies in the Daughters of Isabella, the Guild, and
 her quilting circle. Gladys loved flowers and especially pansies and 
lilacs. She liked root beer floats, browsing for hours for fabric and 
patterns, laughing, and caring for her grandchildren. She made the best 
lemon merengue pie of anybody. Three of her favorite things to say were
 “Will you stay for supper?” “It’s so good to see you” and “Let’s don’t 
and say we did.” 
 Besides her husband, Tommy, she was preceded in death by her 
daughter, Mary E. Allen; her son-in-law, John M. Edmonds; a 
great-granddaughter, Caroline E. Smith; her brother and sister-in-law, 
Harry D. and Louise (Gardner) Phillips; and her sister and 
brother-in-law, Doris M. and Harlan Gilbert. 
 Survivors include two daughters, Sister Marcia Allen, Concordia; and
 Margaret Allen, Hays; and two sons, Michael Allen and wife, Paula, 
Douglas, Ga.; and John Allen and wife, June Knittel, Hays; nine 
grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. 
 A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on September 11, 2021, at 
10:30 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Plainville with inurnment to 
follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Gladys Marie Allen

Ralph Paul Melenson, 81, of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, passed away Monday, July 5, 2021, at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, Arkansas. 

He was born on March 14, 1940, in Grandview, MO, the seventh of eight children born to Oliver and Dorothea Elmer Melenson. At a young age, Ralph followed his older brothers in becoming a caddy at Oakwood Country Club in Kansas City. It was there that he developed a love of, and passion for, golf. He soon began participating in junior gold events in the area, and he was a frequent winner. His skill and talent continued into adulthood until his health began to decline. Ralph was an assistant golf pro in Silver Springs, MD, when he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Most of his military tour was spent in Korea, until, because of illness, he returned to the mainland and was admitted to Walter Reed Military Hospital in Washington, DC, to recuperate. After being honorably discharged, he returned to Missouri. &nbsp;Subsequently, he moved to Kansas City, and he was employed by A&amp;P Grocers and St. Luke’s Hospital. In addition to this work, he also was co-owner of Melenson Landscaping. Ralph was a perfectionist as well as a man of integrity, trust, determination, and perseverance. Most important to him was his Catholic faith. In 2000, he and his wife, Phyllis, née Rietcheck, moved to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas where they became members of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. Ralph attended daily Mass, and he became a sacristan in the parish, as well as a Eucharistic Adorer. He was also a member of local Knights of Columbus Council 10208. Each year he worked tirelessly to ensure that the annual K of C charity golf tournament was successful. He is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, six brothers, and one sister. He is survived by his wife of thirty-six years, many cousins, nieces, and nephews. A funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, July 12, 2021, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church with Fr. William Elser officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Kansas.

Christopher Mark Bullock, age 57, passed away on 
Tuesday, August 3, 2021.&nbsp; He was born in Odessa, Texas on June 18, 
1964.&nbsp; Chris attended school in Derby and Phillipsburg, Kansas. After 
the untimely death of his father, Chris developed a lifetime friendship 
with Rolf Halstensen through the Big Brother program, he was also became
 very close to his uncle, Ken Bullock.

Chris never knew a stranger and always had a joke to tell.&nbsp; Before he
 became disabled he enjoyed traveling. He had a keen interest in 
geography and love of animals.

Chris was preceded in death by his father, Richard Bullock.

Chris is survived by his mother Mary and stepfather Loyal Smith of 
Newton, KS; daughter Krista (Michael) Shea of Mankato, KS; uncle Kenneth
 Bullock of Independence, MO; brothers Kelvin Bullock of Hays, KS and 
Jim (Lisa) Cude of Fall River, KS; sisters Karen (Mike) Runnion of 
Glade, KS and Kathy (Jamie) Whisenhunt of Seligman, MO; grandchildren

Gary Gene Tobias, 83, passed away on Monday, August 16, 2021, at his residence in Lampasas, Texas.

Visitation will be held at <a href="https://www.sneedfuneralchapel.com/obituary/gary-tobias">Sneed Funeral Chapel</a> from 5 pm to 7 pm on 
Tuesday, August 24, 2021.&nbsp; Graveside Services will be held on Wednesday,
 August 25, 2021, at the Central Texas State Veteran's Cemetery in 
Killeen at 11 am, followed by a celebration of life for Gary at First 
United Methodist Church Lampasas at 1:30 pm.

Gary was born on February 23, 1938, in Great Bend, KS to Elmer and 
Viola (Parker) Tobias.&nbsp; He grew up in Great Bend and graduated from 
Great Bend High School in 1956.&nbsp; After high school, he joined the US Air
 Force in 1957 and served for 4 years.&nbsp; He was honorably discharged in 
1967 at the rank of Airman First Class.

After the Air Force, Gary attended college at Kansas State University
 where he received a B.S. in Industrial Arts Ed.&nbsp; He then went on to 
attend Kansas State College of Pittsburg where he received an M.S. in 
Industrial Ed. in May of 1968.&nbsp; After college Gary primarily worked in 
the electronic fields in multiple capacities, retiring in 2011.&nbsp; Gary 
married Charlotte Henry in 1957 in Great Bend, KS and they were happily 
married for 23 years.&nbsp; In 1982, Gary married Sandra Jackson and they 
were happily married for 38 years.&nbsp; Gary was a proud member of the 
United Methodist Church for 17 years, where he sang in the choir the 
entire time.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Viola Tobias; wife, Sandra, and his sister, Shirley Spitzmiller.

Survivors include his sisters, Beverly (James) Roberts, Judy Burke, 
Debbie (Shane) Potter; sons, Bradley Scott Tobias of Wichita, KS, 
Randall Lee Tobias of Wichita, KS, David Allen Tobias of Bailey, CO; 7

Gary Gene Tobias

Wanda Rose (Hemken) Karst, age 94, Rush Center, Kansas, passed away 
Sunday, August 15, 2021, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, Kansas.

Wanda was born July 22, 1927, to William and Katherine (Wagner) Hemken on the family farm near Rush Center.

She was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith at Hope Lutheran Church, Rush Center.

Wanda started school in Rush County District 22 (Chilly Knob) and 
then attended Rush Center Grade School through 8th grade before 
continuing her education at La Crosse High School, La Crosse, Kansas, 
graduating in 1945.&nbsp; With a war-time shortage of teachers, she was 
encouraged to go to Fort Hays Kansas State College, Hays, Kansas, for 
the summer, receive an emergency teaching certificate and begin teaching
 in the fall.&nbsp; She then taught grades 1st through 8th in a one room 
school.&nbsp; She went on to teach for six years in Rush and Barton County 
Schools.&nbsp; Wanda later went back to teaching as a substitute teacher for 
several years.&nbsp;

On June 11, 1950, Wanda was united in marriage to Leon Karst at Hope 
Lutheran Church, Rush Center.&nbsp; For the first seven years, the couple 
made their home on the Karst family farm near Galatia, Kansas, before 
moving back to Wanda’s birthplace in 1957.&nbsp; They lived there until 2019 
when they became residents of Locust Grove Village, La Crosse.

Leon and Wanda were blessed with five children:&nbsp; Jeannine, David, 
Stephen, Richard and Charles.&nbsp; Their marriage spanned an amazing 71 
years.

Wanda was a member of Hope Lutheran Church where she served in 
several capacities including Sunday School teacher and superintendent, 
and in WELCA, the church’s womens group.

She also actively participated in several community organizations:&nbsp; 
Extension Board and FCE units, 4-H leader, United Fund board and Rush 
Center Lions Club.

Wanda enjoyed quilting, gardening and reading.

Wanda was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Hilda Hagerman 
and Verna Voight; brother, Martin Hemken; a son, Stephen Joel Karst; and
 daughter in law, Sharon (Wells) Karst.

Survivors include her husband, Leon; daughter, Jeannine Moore and 
husband, Tom, of Pueblo, Colorado; sons, David and wife, Kelli, Fort 
Collins, Colorado, Richard and wife, Rhonda, Rush Center, and Charles of
 Claremore, Oklahoma.

Wanda is also survived by ten grandchildren:&nbsp; granddaughters, 
Katherine (Karst) Storie and husband, Douglas Jr., Ashlyn Karst, Rayna 
Karst, Kelsey Moore and Jordyn Karst; grandsons include:&nbsp; Brandon Yost, 
William Karst, Nathaniel Karst and wife, Andrea, Caleb Karst and Collin 
Karst.&nbsp; Great grandchildren are Weiland and Wallace Yost and Elliot and 
Blakely Karst.

Memorial service will be Saturday, August 21, 2021, at 10:00 A.M. at 
Hope Lutheran Church, Rush Center, with Pastor Wayne Baldyga

Francis W. Porsch, 88, of Selden, died Monday, August 16, 2021. He was 
born Dec. 2, 1932, to Walter and Thresia (Koerperich) Porsch at their

Francis returned to Selden after his service and entered into the Porsch
 Brothers partnership with his older brother Norb and younger brother 
Doc. The partnership involved a construction business, farming, and a 
service station in Selden, with each of them taking the lead in one part
 of the business. Most of the construction business in the early days 
focused on building and remodeling homes and other buildings. Francis 
was a woodworking master, making many custom cabinets around northwest 
Kansas. Woodworking remained a hobby he enjoyed well into his later 
years. The business later was more focused on marketing and construction
 of metal HerCo and then Chief machine sheds and grain bins. 
Francis married Leone Anderson on March 23, 1974. Francis won many 
awards for sales which allowed he and Leone to take several trips, 
favorites were their honeymoon trip to Spain and Morocco and a later 
trip to Hawaii. He employed many young men and other farmers from the 
area that needed extra work over the years taking pride in putting in a 
full days’ work. 
When the Porsch Brothers partnership dissolved after the death of Norb 
in 1982, Francis turned entirely to farming, building upon the land he 
and Leone acquired over the years. He later worked with his nephew, 
Michael Porsch and his family, and remained an active farmer until after
 fall harvest in 2020. He took special pride in the crops and livestock 
he grew and keeping his pastures well fenced and free of musk thistle. 
Francis’ nieces and nephews remember with fondness his love of games, 
especially one designed to be aggravating, that he later drew his great 
nieces and nephews into at every opportunity, as well. He enjoyed 
following his grand nephews and nieces sporting events and school 
achievements and sharing with them stories of the world he knew as a 
child, teen and young adult as they grew up. After his semi-retirement,
 he enjoyed reading about history and traveling around the area to 
historical sites and museums with family and friends and taking in 
auctions with his neighbor and friend J. R. Albers where he visited with
 old friends from his construction days. 
Francis is preceded in death by his wife, Leone; his parents, Walter and
 Thresia; his brothers, Norb and Doc, and his brothers-in-law, Albert 
(Dink) Dinkel and Stanley Shaw. He is survived by his sisters, Mary Anna
 Dinkel and Ramona Shaw; his sister-in-law, Myrna Porsch; his 
stepchildren, Julia Otter, Connie (Joel) Bryan, and Lorraine (Gerald) 
Ackerman; 11 nieces and nephews, Kathy Porsch, Ruth Porsch, Joan Porsch,
 Michael Porsch, Greg Dinkel, Anna Marie Johnson, Chris Gillespie, 
Colleen Wagoner, Mark Shaw, Cindy Black, and Mary Wahlmeier; several 
step-grandchildren, and numerous great nieces and nephews, and 
great-great nieces and nephews. 
A celebration of Francis’ life will be held August 27th at 11:00 am at

Carol Marie Engleman, 65, of Otis, Kansas, passed away August 4, 2021, in
 Hutchinson, Kansas. She was born October 17, 1955, in Hill City, Kansas 
to Francis Marion and Reva Mildred (Teter) Moore. 
 She married Ron Engleman February 3, 1988, in Morland. He preceded 
her in death December 21, 2015. Carol was also preceded in death by her 
parents; her brother Tommy, and her son, Christopher. Survivors left to 
cherish her memory include her daughter Merri Taylor and husband Jeremy 
of Otis and her grandson Myles Binger. Carol loved her family more than 
anything else and was very close to her grandson, Myles.

Harold Joseph Gabel, 88, died Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at ComfortCare
 Homes of Kansas City, Leawood, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born December 31, 1932 
to Melchior and Cecilia (Unrein) Gabel at Munjor, Kansas.

He worked for Hunter Construction of Hays, Kansas as an Equipment 
Operator before he joined the United States Army during the Korean 
Conflict at Seoul, Korea and Okinawa, Japan.&nbsp; When he returned to the 
U.S. he became a brick mason and traveled to many towns in Kansas 
working on large construction projects, such as the Eisenhower Library 
in Abilene, Kansas.&nbsp; He settled down in Dodge City, Kansas and formed 
his business called G&amp;S Masonry serving the community with 
bricklaying services on residential and commercial projects for over 40 
years.

He married Velma Klaus at Antonino, Kansas, on August 11, 1952 and 
they had five children.&nbsp; He and his wife owned and managed Skateland Fun
 Center in Dodge City for eleven years.&nbsp; The couple later divorced, but 
remained very close until Velma’s passing.

He was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Dodge 
City, Kansas and many years ago also provided stewardship in various 
capacities at Sacred Heart Cathedral. In addition, he was a charter 
member and a 4h degree member of the Rev. John Handly Council No. 2955 
Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of Foreign Wars Post No. 1714 
in Dodge City, Kansas and a member of Kansas Construction Trades Union.

Survivors include a son, Dale Gabel and wife, Carole Corley, Garden 
City, Kansas; and four daughters, Jacqueline Randle and husband, Clarke,
 Stillwater, Oklahoma, Vicki Schumacher and husband, Neal, Lenexa, 
Kansas, Kelley Morrison and husband Paul, Overland Park, Kansas, and 
DaLanna Nichols, Wamego, Kansas, and her companion, Gary White, as well 
as eleven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.&nbsp; He is also 
survived by two brothers, Ernest Gabel, Dodge City, and Gene Gabel and 
wife, Rita, Hays, Kansas; one sister, Norma Huser, Vincent, Kansas; and 
one sister-in-law, Mary Jane Gabel, Wichita, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Donald Gabel, 
two sisters, Mildred Linenberger, Luella Augustine, his companion 
Caroline Harms, and one great grandson.

Vigil service followed by Knights of Columbus rosary will be at 7:00 
pm Sunday, August 22, 2021 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe.&nbsp; 
Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 am Monday, August 23, 2021 at the church,

Charles Henry “Chuck” Elliott, age 71, passed away on Wednesday, 
August 17, 2021, at the Greeley County Hospital in Tribune, Kansas. He 
was born on September 4, 1949, to Elmer and Marie Burk Elliott in 
Goodland, Kansas. He was a member of the community since 1974 having 
moved from Goodland, Kansas. In 1981, he opened Elliott Insurance with 
his wife, Dianna.&nbsp;

Chuck was a member of the Rotary club, a founding member of the 
Greeley County Amusement Association, and a long-time board member of 
the Greeley County golf course.&nbsp;

Chuck married Dianna Harding on May 26, 1972, in Goodland, Kansas. She survives.

Survivors include his wife, his daughter Sherri &amp; Tanner Elder of
 Tribune, Kansas, his son, Travis Elliott of Tribune Kansas, one 
granddaughter, Irelyn Elder of Tribune, Kansas, one grandson, Tayber 
Elder of Tribune, Kansas, and one sister, Connie &amp; Dan Cullens of 
Goodland, Kansas.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers, Don and Jim.

Charles Henry 'Chuck' Elliott

Prairie View resident Leland “Duane” Merklein passed away Monday, August 16, 2021, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska at the age of 86.

He was born June 2, 1935, at the family home near Logan, Kansas, the son of Edwin J. and Freida (Hoffman) Merklein. Duane was baptized on June 16, 1935, and was confirmed in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church on June 19th, 1949. He served in the United States Army before returning home to Kansas to help run the family farm.

Duane was united in marriage to Phyllis A. Stutterheim on July 18, 1958, at Prairie View, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;To this union, five children were born.

Duane was a farmer&nbsp;and loved being able to spend his time working in the field, raising livestock, and traveling to see all of his kids and grandkids.&nbsp;Anyone who was close to Duane knew what he meant when he looked to the sky and said he saw “rain seeds”, impending rain.&nbsp;The Weather Channel should have consulted with him first.&nbsp;

Duane enjoyed vacationing when time allowed, and had many memorable trips together with friends and family. On his trips, he enjoyed sampling the local cuisine and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to test out the local apple pies.&nbsp; To this day, there was no German food like the food his mom and aunts made.&nbsp;

Those that preceded him in death were his parents Edwin J. and Freida Merklein; infant brother Edwin G. Merklein; brother Norman Merklein; sister Ruth Ann Miller and brother-in-law, Virgil Miller.

Survivors include his wife Phyllis of the home; his children; Susan Warner and husband Charlie of Cimarron, KS, Beth Merklein of Oregon, MO; Matt Merklein and wife Kelly of Dallas, TX; Denise Kaufmann and husband Robb of Southlake, TX and Janna Newman and husband Ryan of Gold Canyon, AZ; 14 grandchildren; Hailey and husband Jake; &nbsp;Emily, Jack, Wyatt, Sam, Zachary, Ian, Cade, Britt, Cort, Tyler, Brynn, Irelyn and Macen; 1 great grandchild, James. He is also survived by his Sister-in-law, Carla Merklein of Alma, Nebraska, and Brother-in-law, Keith Stutterheim and his wife Marie of Weston, MO; along with many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. in the Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Stuttgart, KS with Pastor Lee Bennight officiating.&nbsp; The services will be streamed live on the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel Facebook page.&nbsp; Burial will follow in the Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Stuttgart.

Mr. Merklein will lie in state from noon until 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.&nbsp; The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Friday evening for visitation in the funeral chapel.

Joyce Maureen Sarmento, of Orland, Calif., passed away Monday, August 16, 
2021.&nbsp; Born December 4, 1933, in Weed, Calif., Joyce graduated from Yreka High
 School and attended Heald’s Business College in Sacramento.&nbsp; There she 
met her husband, Manuel, and they married on October 18, 1953.&nbsp;

Together, Manuel and Joyce were married 40 years, raised three 
children, Kathleen (Sarmento) Paslay, Mark Sarmento and Terry Sarmento. 
They owned Sarmento Jewelers, a fixture in downtown Orland, for 32 
years. She was an active member of the St. Dominic’s Catholic Church and
 volunteered as a bookkeeper for the parish. Joyce was a member of the 
Altar Society, enjoyed bowling and gardening and volunteered her time at
 the Orland Food Pantry.

Joyce was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. 
She was preceded in death by her husband Manuel Sarmento Jr and her son 
Terry Anthony Sarmento. She is survived by her children Kathleen Paslay,
 husband Greg and Mark Sarmento, wife Paula, all of Orland.&nbsp; Joyce also 
leaves behind her grandchildren Elizabeth (Paslay) Jaeger, husband John;
 Eric Paslay, wife Tamara; Latasha (Sarmento) Marston, husband Donovan; 
Scott Sarmento, wife Rachel; Rick Lower, wife Tammy; Chris Sarmento, 
wife Cassie; Emmy Sarmento and fifteen great grandchildren.

Services are to be handled by Sweet-Olsen Family Mortuary in Orland. A
 graveside service will be held at the Orland Catholic Cemetery on 
Thursday, August 26th at 10 AM. Joyce will be laid to rest 
next to her husband and son. A Rosary and mass in her memory will be 
held at a later date at St. Dominic's Church in Orland.

Georgena Mamie Wendling, 100, of Casper, Wyoming passed away on Thursday August 12, 2021, at Shepherd of the Valley Care Center. Georgena was born to Nicklaus Joseph Denning and Barbara Weigel on July 14, 1921, in Hays, Kansas. 

Georgena married Albert Wendling in 1937 and went on to have three surviving children: Albert “Sonny” Wendling Jr., Timothy Everett Wendling, and Kenneth John Nicklaus Wendling. Georgena was an Avon lady for 41 years in the Casper area, only stopping her route at the age of 92. Her customers might fondly remember Georgena for her jet-black hair and face-full of makeup. She was a spunky delight to all who knew her. 

Georgena is survived by her sons: Albert “Sonny” Wendling, Tim (Caroline) Wendling, and Ken (LaDonna) Wendling; five Grandchildren: Debbie (Mike) Dewell, Carla Kirby, Nick (Susan) Wendling, Nicole (Jason) Sponsler, and Sabrina (Eddie) Wendling-Lynch; ten Great-Grandchildren; and numerous Great-Great-Grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Albert Sr., all but one sibling (Rita), and her daughter-in-law (Barbara Wendling). 

Funeral service will be held at Saint Patrick’s Church on Country Club Road on August 24th at 1:00pm with Father Gary officiating the service. There is a viewing between 4:00-6:00pm on August 23rd at Bustards Funeral Home. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to all staff at Shephard of the Valley Care Home. Alan R. Stewart, age 82, passed away on Monday, August 16, 2021, at 
his home in Scott City, Kansas. He was born on March 30, 1939, in Scott 
City, the son of George Eugene and Madeline Harrington Stewart. Alan was
 a resident of Scott City since moving from Healy in 1958. Alan worked 
in Law Enforcement most of his life and served his community as sheriff 
for many years.

Alan was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church of Scott City as well
 as the Kansas Sheriff’s Association and the Kansas Police Officers 
Association.

On September 19, 1998, Alan married Alice Workman in Scott City. She survives.

Survivors include his wife - Alice Stewart of Scott City, Kansas, 
three daughters - Marsha Hollaway of Scott City, Donna &amp; John 
Dummermuth of Manhattan, Kansas, and Brenda &amp; Joe Turpin of 
Granbury, Texas, Four sons - Dan &amp; Araceli Stewart of Holcomb, 
Kansas, Bob &amp; Kim Stewart of Olathe, Kansas, Ryan &amp; Emily 
Stewart of Oak Grove, Kentucky, and Earl Stewart of Oak Grove, Kentucky,
 15 Grandchildren, and 22 Great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by&nbsp;his parents, one brother, and one sister.

Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 23, 2021, at 
the First Baptist Church of Scott City, Kansas, with Don Williams 
presiding.

Interment will be in the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas.

Longtime Goodland, KS resident Billy Joe Thornburg, 74, passed away 
on Saturday, August 15, 2021, at the Goodland Regional Medical Center in 
Goodland.

Bill was born on September 12, 1946, in Perryton, TX to Lilburn Joe 
and Nellie Lilian (Hood) Thornburg.&nbsp; He was one of four children.&nbsp; The 
family moved to Goodland, where Bill graduated from Goodland High School
 in 1967.&nbsp; He then went on to attend Vo-Tech College in Goodland in the 
Drafting Department.

On June 8, 1968, Bill married Kay Boudreau at the Brewster United Methodist Church.&nbsp; To this union, one son, Neal was born.

Bill loved working construction and in his younger days he worked for
 Caldwell’s setting up mobile homes.&nbsp; Later in life, Bill started Bill’s
 Shootin Shop in Goodland, where he enjoyed visiting with people from 
all over.&nbsp; He loved hunting, and fishing, collecting football cards.&nbsp; He
 especially loved to Goose Hunt.

He is survived by his wife Kay of the home, his son Neal (Stacy) 
Thornburg of Goodland, three grandchildren; Chantel Thornburg of Ellis, 
KS, Kim (Dale) Brungardt of Colby, KS and Sydnee Thornburg of Dallas, 
TX; one great grandchild, Fairlane Brungardt and one on the way.&nbsp; He is 
also survived by two brothers; Gerald Thornburg and Larry Thornburg, one
 sister Norma Kuehler, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and 
friends.

Ruby Bell Palmer Seaman Bedore was born June 10, 1925, on a farm near 
Woodston, Kansas and departed this life August 16, 2021. She was the 
second daughter and one of five children of George A. and Mabel M. 
Walker Palmer.
 Ruby Bell grew up on the family farm, attended the Chalk Mound 
School and graduated from Woodston Rural High School in 1943. She 
attended a summer teachers’ training program at Fort Hays State College 
then taught for four years in rural Rooks County at Hrabe School, Chalk 
Mound and Survey schools.
 Ruby Bell married Victor E. Seaman September 5, 1948, beginning 
their lives together on a farm near Alton, KS until 1953 when they moved
 to Stockton. Her son, Dwight Seaman, joined the family in October 1958,
 and remains Ruby’s only child even as she treated nieces and nephews as
 her own. Victor Seaman preceded her in death in March 1977. She later
 married Joseph “Bill” Bedore in November 1977. Bill Bedore died in 
June 1996.
 With service to her family and the community in mind, Ruby worked a 
variety of jobs while living in Stockton, Kansas. Her jobs and 
responsibilities included work as a café cook and waitress, employee in 
cream stations, a clerk and bookkeeper for Phelps Drug Store, a clerk in
 the Register of Deeds office, and bus driver for U.S.D. 271 for 12 
years. She was a Senior Companion from 1996 to 2013. Her work as a 
Senior Companion touched many families and was a fulfilling role for 
Ruby Bell. She was a member of and regular volunteer for the Lion’s 
Club and actively attended church throughout her life.
 Quilting remained a passion for Ruby Bell, providing her with a 
creative outlet and hobby that drew in friends who also loved quilting. 
Relatives and friends who received her quilts will be kept warm from her
 efforts for years to come. 
 She leaves to mourn a son, Dwight L. Seaman and his wife Betty of 
Madison, Mississippi, grandson Travis Seaman and his wife Mallory of 
Akron, Ohio, and granddaughter Jessica Beer and her husband Alexander of
 Denver, Colorado. Great-grandchildren include Travis Seaman’s 
children, Saffron, Benjamin and Robert. 
 Family members partaking in mourning Ruby’s passing include niece 
Debra Schellinger of Stockton, KS, nephew Ron Eggers and his wife Dana 
and their children of Parsons, KS, nephew Bob Eggers of Gilbert AZ,

 Those preceding her in death besides her husbands and her parents, 
are two sisters, Florence Walker and her husband Floyd, and Betty Eggers
 and her husband Edmond, two brothers, Junior Palmer and his wife Rita, 
and Roy Lee Palmer and his wife Rosalee, two nephews, Dale Palmer and 
Terry Eggers, four nieces, Shirley Desaire, Candra Shinn, Juanita Wallis
 and Joyce Groft, and step-daughter Linda Hrabe and her husband Leonard.
 Along with her many relatives, Ruby’s passing will be observed by a 
host of lifelong friends and neighbors. Her family thanks the caring 
staff at Solomon Valley Manor for years of care and attention.
 A Graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at the
 Stockton City Cemetery at 3 PM. Visitation will be on Friday from 2PM 
until 8PM at the funeral home in Stockton.

step-granddaughter Shannon Schmidt and her family of Smith County, KS. 
 Those preceding her in death besides her husbands and her parents, 
are two sisters, Florence Walker and her husband Floyd, and Betty Eggers
 and her husband Edmond, two brothers, Junior Palmer and his wife Rita, 
and Roy Lee Palmer and his wife Rosalee, two nephews, Dale Palmer and 
Terry Eggers, four nieces, Shirley Desaire, Candra Shinn, Juanita Wallis
 and Joyce Groft, and step-daughter Linda Hrabe and her husband Leonard.
 Along with her many relatives, Ruby’s passing will be observed by a 
host of lifelong friends and neighbors. Her family thanks the caring 
staff at Solomon Valley Manor for years of care and attention.
 A Graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at the
 Stockton City Cemetery at 3 PM. Visitation will be on Friday from 2PM 
until 8PM at the funeral home in Stockton.

Ruby Bell Bedore

Joseph Dean Arwine, 81, died on Saturday, August 14, 2021, at his home in
 Cimarron. He was born on September 6, 1939, at Southwest City, Missouri
 the son of James Martin &amp; Helen Pauline (Lancaster) Arwine. He 
married Rea June Bourne on July 20, 1962, at Albuquerque, New Mexico. 
She died on June 18, 2001. He later married Roberta Swaney McDowell on 
December 24, 2004 at Cimarron. 
Joe attended Garden City schools and joined the United States Army right
 out of high school. He served from 1957 until 1960 mainly stationed at
 Hornsby Missile Base in Washington. After his discharge he returned 
to Garden City and worked at several places before beginning g a 36 year
 career as a Salesman for Berry Tractor. After retiring he moved to 
Cimarron where he was known as the “lawn mower man” for fixing mowers 
and other small engines. Joe was a witty, new no strangers type of 
person who loved to talk about cars. He was a 60 year member of Harry H.
 Renick American Legion Post # 9 and John J. Haskell VFW Post # 2279. 
He enjoyed racing cars in his younger years and recently fishing, 
boating, camping, traveling and the daily cleaning of his vehicles. 
He is survived by his Wife- Roberta Arwine, 2 Sons- Joseph D. Arwine II 
of Waynesville North Carolina and Robert R. Arwine of Garden City, 2 
Daughters- Machelle Lee Silk of Bella Vista, Arkansas and Deanna Sue 
Reidy of Kearney, Nebraska, Brother- James Arwine of Garden City, 3 
Sisters- Janis Mastin of Garden City, Jowilla Couch of Scott City and 
Joyce Triebold of Woodland Park, Colorado, 4 Step-Children- Jerry

Joseph Dean Arwine

Debbie Tasset, 65, died August 16, 2021, at St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City, Kansas.

She was born May 3, 1956, at Ness City, Kansas the daughter of Paul 
and Betty (Fose) Kraft. On January 8, 1983, she married Tom Tasset of 
Spearville, Kansas. They lived on a farm south of Spearville. She was a 
farm wife and she loved spending time with her granddaughter. She was a 
beautiful person inside and out, she would so anything for you. Debbie 
had a big smile and loved being at the lake with her sister.

Survivors include: her husband, Tom Tasset, Spearville; her daughter,
 Aubrey Tasset, Wichita; her granddaughter, Leiyah, Wichita; her sister,
 Cindy Klein, Dodge City; 2 brothers, Tony Kraft, Dodge City, Terry 
Kraft, Palm Springs, California; many nieces, nephews, and lots of 
friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Paul Kraft in 2009 and her mother, Betty Kraft, July 2021.

Vigil Service will be at 7:00 pm Friday, August 20, 2021, at St. John 
the Baptist Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 am Saturday 
at the church with Fr. John Forkuoh presiding. There will be no public

Debbie Tasset

James "Jim" Craig Malone was born on February 8, 1962, the seventh 
child born to Park and Virginia (Pelle) Malone.&nbsp; Jim attended St. 
Charles Academy and graduated from Stratton High School in 1980.

Jim worked for several farmers in the Stratton area and Kit Carson 
County Road and Bridge before he attended line school in Grand 
Junction.&nbsp; His career as a lineman found him working for contractors 
that traveled to build power line and living in a camper on the road.&nbsp; 
Jim traveled to Louisiana after hurricane Katrina and worked many ice 
storms.&nbsp; His biggest accomplishment as a lineman was maintaining power 
lines working out of a helicopter.

Jim lived his life by his own rules – often times giving his parents a
 run for their money!&nbsp; When Ken was to receive his diploma from 
Northeastern Junior College, the two of them switched places and Jim 
walked through the commencement ceremony.&nbsp; When the Dean handing out 
diplomas questioned his appearance, he rattled off the important details
 and was hesitantly given the diploma in place of his brother Ken.&nbsp; Jim 
had a love for motorcycles from an early age, starting with dirt bikes 
and ending with Harley Davidson street bikes.&nbsp; Jim attended many rallies
 from Daytona to Sturgis.&nbsp; He enjoyed riding with his brother Don – most
 recently meeting in Sterling for a short conversation over lunch which 
consisted of a can of Mountain Dew.&nbsp; Jim loved the outdoors and the many
 activities that it provided.&nbsp; He was an avid hunter of all things – 
pheasant, antelope, deer, elk, and bear.&nbsp; He also enjoyed fishing and 
riding ATVs in the mountains with family and friends.&nbsp; While Jim 
appreciated all things fast and outdoors, he also had a huge heart.&nbsp; He 
visited his sister Bev regularly, always made sure his mom had a nice 
Christmas gift, and would show up to help without hesitation.&nbsp; His love 
and dedication for his family will be missed.

Jim reconnected with a childhood family friend, Cindy (Fox) Folsom 
and they chose to share their lives in Evans, Colorado.&nbsp; Jim and Cindy 
went on many adventures, recently visiting Jackson Hole, Wyoming where 
they had a great time.&nbsp; Jim loved Cindy’s kids and grandkids like his 
own.&nbsp; His eyes lit up when he spoke about Tony (Xavier) and Tweetie 
(Violet).

Jim went to his eternal home on Sunday, August 1, 2021, in Wichita, KS
 due to injuries sustained in an ATV accident on July 17.&nbsp; He is 
preceded in death by his parents Park and Virginia Malone, siblings 
Mark, Ken, and Beverly (Doddridge), grandparents Hank and Catherine 
Pelle and William and Edith Malone, sister-in-law Paula Malone and niece
 Angela Malone.&nbsp; He is survived by Cindy and her children Chelsey and

James Craig Malone

Sarah Elizabeth Wright Simpson, 89, passed away August 15, 2021 at Country Place Senior Living, Hoisington, KS.

Graveside service will be held, August 25, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. in the 
Veterans Section of Park Hill Cemetery, Macon Road, Columbus, GA.

Sarah, daughter of the late Preacher Paul T and Annie Belle (Watkins) Wright was born December 27, 1931, Natural Bridge, VA. &nbsp;

She was Baptist by faith and one of the founding members of Wynnbrook
 Baptist Church, Columbus, GA. She taught Adult Ladies Bible Class on 
Sundays for over forty years at churches in GA, VA, RI, KS and HI. In 
1969, she became a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. 
She served as Regent, Oglethorpe DAR Chapter, Columbus, GA. She also 
served as a Chairman at the GA DAR State level. She was a member of the 
Columbus Students Club and served all level of Officers positions to 
include President.

She graduated from Toccoa High School, Toccoa, GA in 1948 and later 
graduated from Winthrop College, Rock Hill, S.C. in 1951. She taught 
home economics at the Tamassee DAR school, 1951-1952.

During college she met the love of her life, Richard Russell Simpson.
 They married June 2, 1952 in Westminster, S.C. The next 30 years, Sarah
 traveled with Richard during his military service in the Army. She 
enjoyed moving from Post to Post totaling 13 times with their final 
destination Fort Benning, GA. Upon Richard’s retirement from the Army, 
as a Colonel, in 1982, they settled in Upatoi, GA where she spent the 
next 34 years. In March 2014, she moved to the Gardens of Calvary 
Assisted Living, Columbus, GA.

September 2016, she moved to Hoisington, KS and lived with her 
daughter and son-in-law for 3½ years. January 2019, she moved to 
Brookdale Senior Living, Great Bend, KS moving in December 2019 to 
Country Place Senior Living, Hoisington, KS. &nbsp;

Sarah was preceded in death by her parents, and only sister, Julia 
Rose Sublett. On March 8, 2013 her husband, Richard, passed away.

Sarah and Richard were blessed with three children. Richard R. 
Simpson, Jr. (Theresa) of Whites, GA, Paula F. Manweiler (Gene) of 
Hoisington, KS and Elizabeth A. Simpson, Denver, CO. She has four 
grandchildren, Tracy Engerman, Brooke Stillwell, Shanna Simpson and 
Richard R. Simpson, III. In addition, three great-grandchildren, Owen 
Shepheard, Molly Engerman and Copeland Stillwell.

Sarah Elizabeth Simpson

Darlene Mae Jensen Miller was a loving wife, mother, sister, 
grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. She died Sunday, August
 15 in Colby, Kansas at the age of 84. 
She was born to Shirley and Henry Jensen on April 2, 1937. During high 
school in North Platte, Nebraska, Darlene met Donald K. Miller on a 
double date. They were married shortly thereafter upon her high school 
graduation; they recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. 
Together, they had two children Jeffrey and Mark. 
Darlene’s primary loves were her family and friends (and maybe her 
crossword puzzles) but she also valued her professional career. Whether 
playing bridge with her girlfriends or balancing books behind the 
scenes, Darlene had an affinity for numbers. She began bookkeeping 
unexpectedly when a jewelry store owner showed up at her front door in 
Denver with a stack of ledgers in hand saying hopefully “I heard you 
could keep books...” That propitious encounter began Darlene’s career in
 bookkeeping that eventually led her to earning an AA degree in 
municipal accounting and working for Paul Steel, CPA. 
She raised her boys alongside her two cherished sisters and their eleven
 children. Weekends at the lake and family holiday dinners with their 
“Daddy” hold strong, bonding and loving memories for them all. 
Darlene loved life and adored her husband, her sons and their families. 
Her five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren delighted her with 
their antics, love, ambitions and quick-wit. Darlene’s own good humor, 
sage advice and generous loving nature endeared her to her family as 
well. 
Darlene relished traveling internationally with Don, her sisters and her
 friends. She also enjoyed with Don behind the wheel of their RV and 
their beloved dachshund perched between them. When traveling, Darlene 
appreciated seeing as much as possible as quickly as possible. But when 
it came to the people she met while traveling, Darlene’s pace relaxed; 
she was consistently friendly and welcoming making new friends easily. 
Darlene and Don also had life-long friends who would enjoy regular 
Saturday afternoon hamburger and beer dates. She kept in touch with 
friends who moved away from Colby and deeply treasured their friendship 
and their history together. 
Darlene was a humble, godly woman who loved the Lord; she embodied 
faithfulness, compassion, generosity and forgiveness. Her unwavering 
faith gave her strength, encouragement and hope. She attended Trinity 
Lutheran church where her sons joined her on Sunday mornings as they 
grew up. She volunteered as the treasurer at Trinity Lutheran for many 
years. 
Though her own memory faded with dementia, Darlene’s kind, gentle and 
loving disposition did not fade as her attentive family and loving 
caregivers at Prairie Senior Center would attest. 
Darlene was preceded in death by her mother Shirley Jensen Lunkwitz, her
 father Henry Jensen, and her sisters Beverly Saathoff and Bonnie Baade.
 She is survived by her beloved husband Don Miller; son Jeffrey Miller 
and wife Diana; son Mark Miller and wife Darcie; grandchildren, Holly 
Haines and husband Burk, Aaron Miller and wife Sarah, Nate Miller and 
wife Nicole, Luke Miller, and Ellie Miller as well as her 
great-grandchildren: Jonathan Miller, Matthew Miller, Brewer Haines, 
Geneva Haines; her brother Raymond Lunkwitz; and numerous treasured 
nieces and nephews.

 </figure>Darlene Mae Jensen Miller was a loving wife, mother, sister, 
grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. She died Sunday, August
 15 in Colby, Kansas at the age of 84. 
She was born to Shirley and Henry Jensen on April 2, 1937. During high 
school in North Platte, Nebraska, Darlene met Donald K. Miller on a 
double date. They were married shortly thereafter upon her high school 
graduation; they recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. 
Together, they had two children Jeffrey and Mark. 
Darlene’s primary loves were her family and friends (and maybe her 
crossword puzzles) but she also valued her professional career. Whether 
playing bridge with her girlfriends or balancing books behind the 
scenes, Darlene had an affinity for numbers. She began bookkeeping 
unexpectedly when a jewelry store owner showed up at her front door in 
Denver with a stack of ledgers in hand saying hopefully “I heard you 
could keep books...” That propitious encounter began Darlene’s career in
 bookkeeping that eventually led her to earning an AA degree in 
municipal accounting and working for Paul Steel, CPA. 
She raised her boys alongside her two cherished sisters and their eleven
 children. Weekends at the lake and family holiday dinners with their 
“Daddy” hold strong, bonding and loving memories for them all. 
Darlene loved life and adored her husband, her sons and their families. 
Her five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren delighted her with 
their antics, love, ambitions and quick-wit. Darlene’s own good humor, 
sage advice and generous loving nature endeared her to her family as 
well. 
Darlene relished traveling internationally with Don, her sisters and her
 friends. She also enjoyed with Don behind the wheel of their RV and 
their beloved dachshund perched between them. When traveling, Darlene 
appreciated seeing as much as possible as quickly as possible. But when 
it came to the people she met while traveling, Darlene’s pace relaxed; 
she was consistently friendly and welcoming making new friends easily. 
Darlene and Don also had life-long friends who would enjoy regular 
Saturday afternoon hamburger and beer dates. She kept in touch with 
friends who moved away from Colby and deeply treasured their friendship 
and their history together. 
Darlene was a humble, godly woman who loved the Lord; she embodied 
faithfulness, compassion, generosity and forgiveness. Her unwavering 
faith gave her strength, encouragement and hope. She attended Trinity 
Lutheran church where her sons joined her on Sunday mornings as they 
grew up. She volunteered as the treasurer at Trinity Lutheran for many 
years. 
Though her own memory faded with dementia, Darlene’s kind, gentle and 
loving disposition did not fade as her attentive family and loving 
caregivers at Prairie Senior Center would attest. 
Darlene was preceded in death by her mother Shirley Jensen Lunkwitz, her
 father Henry Jensen, and her sisters Beverly Saathoff and Bonnie Baade.
 She is survived by her beloved husband Don Miller; son Jeffrey Miller 
and wife Diana; son Mark Miller and wife Darcie; grandchildren, Holly 
Haines and husband Burk, Aaron Miller and wife Sarah, Nate Miller and 
wife Nicole, Luke Miller, and Ellie Miller as well as her 
great-grandchildren: Jonathan Miller, Matthew Miller, Brewer Haines, 
Geneva Haines; her brother Raymond Lunkwitz; and numerous treasured 
nieces and nephews.

Darlene Mae Jensen Miller

Velma LaVerne Baker, 94, Hays, died Sunday, August 15, 2021, at Brookdale Hays.

She was born February 22, 1927, in Hays,
 the daughter of Theodore Harvey and Foila Bernice (Joy) Gosser.&nbsp; Velma 
was raised and educated in Ellis County and graduated from Hays High 
School in 1945.&nbsp; On March 3, 1946, she was united in marriage to Donald 
E. Baker in Hays.&nbsp; They celebrated 61 years of marriage before he 
preceded her in death on July 29, 2007.&nbsp; She was a lifetime member of 
Trinity Lutheran Church, and a member of the Buckeye Ladies Club and the
 Ellis County Historical Society.&nbsp; Velma was a housewife and for 28 
years was a career Army wife, with her husband serving in World War II, 
the Korean War, and the Vietnam conflict.&nbsp; Donald and Velma were 
stationed with their children in many different places around the 
world.&nbsp; She enjoyed genealogy scrapbooking, skydiving five times, and 
spending time with her grandchildren and family.

She is survived by three sons: Warren 
Baker and wife Barb of Nixa, MO, Stuart Baker and wife Janet of 
Highlandville, MO, and Jay Baker of Woodland Park, CO, three daughters: 
Holly Unrein and husband Glenn of Hays, Stacey Vonfeldt and husband 
Keith of Wichita, and Sybil Brauer and husband John of Republic, MO, two
 sisters: Alice Stramel and husband Jim of Hays and Bonnie Wyatt of 
Plainville, a brother: Allen Gosser and wife Donna of Codell, a 
sister-in-law: Eileen Helvey of WaKeeney, 14 grandchildren, and numerous
 great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her 
parents, her husband Donald, a daughter: Cheryl Crouch, two brothers: 
Arnold and Theodore Gosser, a brother-in-law: Clyde Wyatt, and two 
grandchildren: Pamela Clayman and Kirk Hagston.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on
 Saturday, August 21, 2021 at Trinity Lutheran Church, with Pastor 
Brenda Rodger officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in Mt. Allen Cemetery.&nbsp; 
Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 7:00 on Friday at Hays Memorial 
Chapel Funeral Home and from 9:00 am until 10:00 on Saturday at the 
church.&nbsp;

Velma LaVerne Baker

B. Dean Rupp, 85, of Hays, Kansas, 
passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, August 14, 2021, after a
 battle the last year with various health issues.

Dean was born to Wendelin and Helen 
(Rupp) Rupp in Hays on June 13, 1936.&nbsp; He attended Hays Schools through 
age 12 when his mother married William Honas and the family moved to the
 Honas farm north of Ellis.&nbsp; He graduated from Ellis High in 1955 and 
then pursued an education at Fort Hays State University.&nbsp; Following this
 he served in the military for two years.

He married Kaye Fox, in White Plains, 
Kentucky in August 1960.&nbsp; They were divorced.&nbsp; In June l969, he married 
Betty Watts in Mankato, Minnesota.&nbsp; He and his wife owned and operated 
Rupp Drapery and Wallcovering for 25 years, being the largest such store
 between Kansas City and Denver.&nbsp; After retirement he pursued more 
education by auditing French, Spanish and German classes for about 12 
years at FHSU.&nbsp; Although he didn't like to fly, he and his wife traveled
 to Canada and all of the United States except the northeast region.

Dean had a love for helping others and 
served as a companion in the Compeer Program of High Plains Mental 
Health.&nbsp; He was on the Selective Service Board and Developmental Service
 of Northwest Kansas Board for several years. He loved animals and birds
 and belonged to the Pigeon Club of this area, raising white utility 
pigeons which he shipped to all parts of the U.S. When someone said 
“pinochle”, he was always ready to play.

Dean loved being with his family and 
cherished the holidays spent with them. He often came up with what they 
called “weird jokes” and they still laughed or rolled their eyes. He 
often depended on God to help him through certain situations and was 
grateful for his faith.

He leaves behind his wife, Betty of 52 
years, sons Troy (Peggy) of Ellis, Ty (Teresa) of Ellis, daughters Trish
 Rupp of Hays and Tonya Schuster (Bryan) of Topeka, and his beloved Rat 
Terrier, Pic.&nbsp; He is also survived by three grandchildren and three 
great children all of Topeka, one brother Wayne (Norma) of Weeping 
Water, NE, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings.

A Memorial Service will be at 10:30 am 
on Friday, August 20, 2021 at Hays Christian Church.&nbsp; The family will 
receive friends from 6:00 pm until 7:30 on Thursday at Hays Memorial 
Chapel Funeral Home and from 10:00 am until 10:30 On Friday at the
