Lawrence J. “Larry” LaBarge, 79, Topeka, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2021. 
 Larry was born February 3, 1942, in Damar, Kansas, the son of Leonard 
and Caroline Newall LaBarge. He graduated from Damar High School and 
Fort Hays State University earning three degrees in education. Larry 
taught Spanish, English and Latin and spoke French and Italian. He also 
served as a counselor and administrator. Most of his career was spent in
 western Kansas where he was named Outstanding Young Educator. He 
retired from USD 501, Topeka, where he served at Jardine School. On June 6, 1961, Larry and Joyce Dreiling were united in marriage. She survives. 
 He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, Knight of Columbus 
Council No. 8411 and the James W. Gibbons Fourth Degree Assembly. 
 Larry was a very talented woodworker who made many toys for his beloved
 children and grandchildren as well as donating many for the Church’s 
fund raisers. Also surviving are Larry’s children, Monique 
Ellis, her husband, Shane, and Darin LaBarge; three grandchildren 
Madison, Maegan and Nolan LaBarge; great-grandson, Bennett Matthew; 
brother-in-law, Gerald Dreiling; and sisters-in-law, Jean Stabb and 
Shirley Bollig. Larry was preceded in death by his parents. 
Visitation will be Tuesday, August 3, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Christ 
the King Catholic Church followed by the Fourth Degree Chalice Ceremony 
and rosary led by Knight of Columbus Council No. 8411 at 10:30. Mass of 
Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at the Church. 
Inurnment will be Saturday, August 7, at 1 p.m. in Sacred Heart 
Cemetery, Plainville, Kansas. A reception will follow in the Knights of 
Columbus Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may

Donna Ann Seltmann, 73, of Lincoln, Nebraska, died on July 31, 2021, at the Journey House.

She was born on January 19, 1948, to ElVerne and Mary (Wilt) Seltmann
 of Nekoma, Kansas. She attended Pleasant Point country school, 
Alexander Grade School and graduated from Alexander High School in 1966.
 She attended Union College for a time, then worked as a Certified Nurse
 Assistant at various skilled nursing facilities including Homestead, 
Clark Jeary, Holmes Lake Manor and Eastmont.

She is survived by her siblings Shirley Opp of Lincoln, NE; Bill 
Seltmann of Nekoma, KS; Lyle Seltmann of Smyrna, TN; Terry (Cynthia) 
Seltmann of Nekoma, KS; Rita (John) Taylor of Portland, TN; Tim (Marcia)
 Seltmann of Nekoma, KS; Kerrie (Ralph) Schnell of Lincoln, NE; and many
 nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She will be remembered for her love for plants, garage sales, puzzles
 and game playing. Donna brightened up the room with her fun-loving 
spirit and love of people.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 7, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. at Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas.

Her final resting place will be in Nekoma, Kansas, her childhood home.

Keith William Gnad

Richard Lee “Dickie Lee” Weiser, 71, died peacefully at his home on 
Sunday, August 1, 2021. He was born on August 1, 1950, at Garden City the son of Jerome S. and Donna Lee (Wheatcroft) Weiser. 
Rich graduated from Dighton High School in 1968 and was drafted into the United States Army shortly after he began college at Fort Hays State University. He served as an office clerk in Thailand during the Vietnam War. After his discharge he attended Goodland Vo-Tech and continued his studies at Hutchinson Community College. On May 30, 1981, he married Linda Stremel in Dodge City. 
Rich owned and operated Dickie Lee’s Lounge &amp; Parlor from 1980 to the early 1990s. He spent the rest of his life as the owner and contractor of his Company RLW Construction. His younger brother, Robert, worked alongside Rich and his small crew for many years. In later years he also did roof inspections for Reliable Reports.

He was an avid and competitive golfer who won several tournaments throughout the state and took great pride in his two holes in one. Many will remember Rich for his passion for automobiles, especially his 1956 Ford pickup from high school and his bright, shiny Corvettes. A cribbage player and great dancer, he never knew a stranger, always enjoyed a good joke, and loved spending time with his family. 
Rich’s memory will live on in the hearts and minds of all who knew him. 
He is preceded in death by his Parents- Jerome and Donna Weiser and Brother-Robert “Snub” Weiser.

He is survived by his Son- Nick Weiser of Dunkirk, New York, Sister- Brenda (Steve) Kuhlman of Cimarron, Former Wife- Linda Stremel of Dighton, Step-Children- Kimberly (Shane) Bell on Linwood and Kurt Cummins of Dighton, 4 Grandchildren- Wyatt and Aspen of Linwood and Max and Kendreex of Dighton.

Memorial Service will be at 11:00 AM Saturday, August 7, at St Theresa Catholic Church in Dighton. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post # 190 and Kansas Army National Guard Honor Guard.

On February 12, 1955, she married Loren Arthur Gugler in Chicago. He preceded her in death July 26, 2012. She enjoyed Gardening, Bowling, Cross Stitching, Needlepoint and cooking Fried Chicken during Harvest. She is survived by a son, Doug Gugler and wife Ann of Ellis; two grandsons, Scott Gugler and Tanner Gugler and wife Carlyne all of Ellis and a great grandson, Joseph Scott Gugler of Ellis. Larry R. Larson, 79, Junction City, KS. passed 
away on Monday, July 19, 2021 at Geary Community Hospital. Cremation has
 taken place per Mr. Larsons wish. A memorial service will be held 11 
a.m. Saturday, August 7, 2021 at First Christian Church 1429 St. Mary's 
Road Junction City, KS. Pastor Ronnie Roberts will officiate. The family
 will receive friends and relatives one hour prior to the service. A 
reception will follow the memorial service at the church. Inurnment will
 be held following the reception in Liberty Cemetery near Alida, KS.

Department. Larry is survived by his wife, Nancy; two sons, Kirk 
Larson (Brooke) of Mooresville, IN and Roderick Larson of Kansas City, 
MO; a daughter, Robyn Brumfield of Ft. Worth, TX; five grandchildren, 
Kinsey Larson, Josephine Larson, Ezra Brumfield, Taylor Larson and Eden 
Brumfield; and many nieces, nephews and extended family. Larry was 
preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers, Eric, Earl, Eugene, 
Harvey, Norman, Everett and Vernon Larson; and a sister Reva Hostetler. Born
 June 30, 1942, the youngest of 9 children to Henry August and Hazel 
Rundle Glenn Larson originally of the Wakefield, Kansas area. Larry 
attended rural schools and graduated from Dickinson County Community 
High School in Chapman, Kansas. He was a graduate of Fort Hays State 
University where he was a member of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity, serving 
as Social Chairman and Commissary Steward along with being involved in 
numerous other extra curricular activities. While many farm 
parents in those days thought children were “cheaper by the dozen”, 
Larry’s parents discussed and thought that 8 children would be enough to
 help with the farm chores as almost everything that was produced on the
 farm was needed for food. Larry was a kind, obedient and cheerful son 
and brother who was always proud to talk about being a farm boy and his 
careers that followed. He started driving a Ford tractor at age 6 to 
help pick up hay bales and that was just the beginning of working their 
family farm and helping numerous neighbors. At age 16, Larry was 
employed for the State of Kansas Highway Department in Junction City 
where he worked for two summers. Following his graduation from 
High School, not yet 18, Larry walked into Wilson and Company Engineers 
and Architects in Salina, Kansas and asked to speak with the President 
of the company. He was obliged and started work there one year later 
doing drawings for the Saudi Arabian Government Highway project. Due to 
his performance there, he never had to ask for another professional job!
 As word traveled, Larry eventually moved to Waterloo, Iowa and taught 
Commercial Art at Hawkeye Institute of Technology for almost 30 years. 
Larry also had his own studio and did all aspects of Advertising Art and
 Design. He was devoted to his family and as his children became
 older he served as President of the Parent Teacher Organization. Larry
 often said his proudest moments were raising his family and watching 
his students become successful. Larry enjoyed fishing and was an 
avid bowler, bowling for 60 years with one perfect 300 game. Larry was 
added to the Bowling Hall of Fame. He was a junior bowling coach and got
 to meet Hall of Fame professional bowler, Dick Weber, for raising money
 for the Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of America. Larry was an advisor for 
the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America and served on a number of 
charitable organizations and events. Larry was also proud to have served
 as a Scout Master for eight years. He loved working with young 
children. As you know, in those days only the Good Lord knew 
whether a child to be born was a boy or a girl. As Larry’s dad was 
working on the farm making noise in March, 1942, the Good Lord came to 
him and asked what kind of ears he wanted for his son. Because of the 
noise, his dad thought he said “What kind of beers do you want” to which
 he replied, “two big ones”. On June 30, 1942, with his mother 45 
years old, Larry was born on the kitchen table in the old farm house 
with the help of a mid-wife, but there were complications. Dr. Butcher,
 who was the doctor in Wakefield came to the house and discussed with 
the mid-wife the situation. They could not determine whether the 
problems were related to his mother’s age, being born on the kitchen 
table or if it might be because of his “big ears”. After 2 months of 
careful treatment the Doctor told his mother that it looked like 
everything was going to be fine. His mother replied “Thank you Lord” to 
which Larry’s big ears heard that response. As he grew older, Larry 
began to read and research and found what his mother actually said was 
“Amen Lord”. Larry studied about a seminary student who was working on 
his Doctorate Degree. On his thesis he asked what the definition of Amen
 was and found that only about 30% of people who say Amen actually know

 older he served as President of the Parent Teacher Organization. Larry
 often said his proudest moments were raising his family and watching 
his students become successful. Larry enjoyed fishing and was an 
avid bowler, bowling for 60 years with one perfect 300 game. Larry was 
added to the Bowling Hall of Fame. He was a junior bowling coach and got
 to meet Hall of Fame professional bowler, Dick Weber, for raising money
 for the Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of America. Larry was an advisor for 
the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America and served on a number of 
charitable organizations and events. Larry was also proud to have served
 as a Scout Master for eight years. He loved working with young 
children. As you know, in those days only the Good Lord knew 
whether a child to be born was a boy or a girl. As Larry’s dad was 
working on the farm making noise in March, 1942, the Good Lord came to 
him and asked what kind of ears he wanted for his son. Because of the 
noise, his dad thought he said “What kind of beers do you want” to which
 he replied, “two big ones”. On June 30, 1942, with his mother 45 
years old, Larry was born on the kitchen table in the old farm house 
with the help of a mid-wife, but there were complications. Dr. Butcher,
 who was the doctor in Wakefield came to the house and discussed with 
the mid-wife the situation. They could not determine whether the 
problems were related to his mother’s age, being born on the kitchen 
table or if it might be because of his “big ears”. After 2 months of 
careful treatment the Doctor told his mother that it looked like 
everything was going to be fine. His mother replied “Thank you Lord” to 
which Larry’s big ears heard that response. As he grew older, Larry 
began to read and research and found what his mother actually said was 
“Amen Lord”. Larry studied about a seminary student who was working on 
his Doctorate Degree. On his thesis he asked what the definition of Amen
 was and found that only about 30% of people who say Amen actually know

Roch Alan Miller, 66, passed away at his home August 1, 2021, 
surrounded by much of his family in his final days. Roch was born in 
Great Bend to Cy and Fran (Muth) Miller and lived most of his life in 
Barton County.

Roch was a United States Marine, lifetime oilfield worker and lake 
enthusiast all his life. He was loved by his family and friends for who 
he felt the same and gave his all to make sure they all knew he would 
help them in any way possible. His faith was solid in Christ and he 
looked forward to seeing his son, Rochy in heaven along with so many 
others.

Roch is survived by his loving wife, Cori of Ellinwood; a daughter, 
Tammy Dean of Galveston, TX; a brother, Don (Wendy) Miller of 
Hutchinson; a sister, Monica (Barry) Bowers of Great Bend; a daughter in
 law, Renee Miller of Great Bend; his grandchildren, Kaleb, Aerieana, 
Elijah, Brynn, Daegan and Cambrie; and nieces and nephews. He was 
preceded in death by his parents; a son, Roch Miller II; and his 
brothers, Tim Miller and Mick Miller.

Cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 5:00 
to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, August 5, 2021, at Bryant Funeral Home. A 
Celebration of Roch’s Life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 
7, 2021, at Wilson Lake Tatanka Lodge-The Church, with Military Rites

Village Memory Care in Round Rock, Tex. She was born November 28, 1933,

Merle Drehle on January 14, 1961, at Great Bend, Kan.&nbsp; He died September
 15, 1990.

Patricia was a claims secretary at Farm Bureau Financial Services in 
Great Bend. In 1997 she moved away from Great Bend and relocated in 
Harlingen, Tex., before moving to Round Rock, Tex. in 2013. She was a 
member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend, and St. Paul Lutheran 
Church in Harlingen. She always volunteered at church. She especially 
loved spending time with her family.

Survivors include, a daughter, Susan Uribe and husband Eddie of Round
 Rock, Tex.; a brother, Charles Hays and wife Jennifer of Cordillera, 
Colo.; and a grandson, Adam Uribe of Dallas, Tex. She was preceded in 
death by her parents; her husband, Merle Drehle; and two sisters, Carol

Gregory Keith Chambers, age 56, passed away on Friday, July 30, 2021, at 
his home in Scott City, Kansas. He was born on December 19, 1964, to 
James and Shirley Ziegler Chambers. He was a new resident of the 
community and worked in the oil fields.

Gregory was a member of the Catholic faith.

Gregory was married to Angi Sanders. She passed away in May of 2015.

Survivors include his parents, his son Keith Charles Chambers &amp; 
Jennifer of Cheyenne, Wyoming, his daughter Kaitlin Rose Chambers of

Kansas. &nbsp;She married Thomas Reynolds on November 29, 1959, in 
Philipsburg, Kansas. &nbsp;She received her nurse's aide certificate in 1968 
and was employed at the Smith County Memorial Hospital, Smith Center, 
Kansas. &nbsp;She lived most of her life in Smith Center and Osborne, Kansas.
 &nbsp;On November 24, 2014, she moved to Bethany Home in Lindsborg, Kansas, 
along with her cat, Blackie, where she resided until her death.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, sister and 
brother-in-law, Delores and Bill VanWey of Red Cloud, Nebraska, 
brother-in-law Jim Jones of Wood Village, Oregon, and sister-in-law 
Barbara Krein of Connell, Washington. &nbsp;

She is survived by 2 sons, Gary Reynolds and wife June of Beloit,

Donald G. Boos passed away July 30, 2021, at Olathe Medical Center in Olathe, Kansas.&nbsp;

He was born in Hays, Kansas on September 2, 1930 to John and Catherine (Boos) Boos. The family moved to Topeka in 1942 where Don attended Hayden High School.&nbsp; He proudly served in the United States Navy from 1951 until 1954.&nbsp; Following his Naval service, he returned to Topeka to study at Washburn University.&nbsp;

On January 28, 1956 he married the love of his life, Joan Marie Krische, with whom he would spend the rest of his life.&nbsp;

Don spent his career in and around the grocery and real estate businesses, primarily with the Fleming Company, in several cities, where he was Store Development Manager. He was an extremely loyal employee always looking out for the company’s interests. He loved working with people and the real estate community loved working with Don. As much as he loved his work, his greatest joy was the time he spent with his family, his wife, his four sons and their families.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Don was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Olathe, Kansas. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and he served on the Parish Finance Council for 15 years. Don was involved in his community serving as a member of the Olathe Planning Commission for six years, with one year as Chairman.&nbsp; He was a Precinct Committeeman and was active within the Olathe Republican Party.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Wanda Jean (Boos) Guth, daughter-in-law, Gina Marie (Ross) Boos, and grandson, Vincent Edward Boos.&nbsp;

Don is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joan, his sister, Frieda (Boos) Schmidtlein of Topeka, KS, sons, John (Rochelle) Boos, Ron (Jill) Boos, David Boos, all of Olathe, and Don (Cathy) Boos of Salina, KS, along with seventeen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.&nbsp;

The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Davita Dialysis Center, the staff and doctors at Olathe Medical Center, with special thanks to their Critical Care nursing staff.

Dianne L. Merz, 74, passed away at Parker Adventist Hospital in Parker, CO on July 25, 2021.

Dianne was born on September 9, 1946, in Goodland, KS to Lyman and Virgiline (Duell) Amos.&nbsp; Dianne attended and Graduated Goodland High School with a diploma in 1964. Dianne then went to Fort Hays for 3 years then continued her education in Washburn, KS where she got her Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1969.&nbsp; On June 26th, 1966 Dianne married Doyl Merz at the First United Methodist Church in Goodland, KS. The couple adopted two sons when they were newborns Steven in 1973 and Kevin Merz in 1975.

Dianne started her teaching career in 1969 and continued teaching for 30 years in the Lawrence, KS school district. Dianne retired in 2008 to come back to Goodland, KS to take care of her elderly mother.&nbsp; Dianna’s passion was her family, Dianne learned to fly and had her pilots license where she would fly mostly in Eastern Kansas. Dianne also started a T-Shirt business with aviation designs. Dianne enjoyed her flower garden, silk screening, cake decorating, Stain glass, and reading.

She was preceded in death by her parents and Grandparents.

Surviving family includes her husband Doyl Merz, her two sons Steven (Melissa) Merz of Springfield, MO, Kevin Merz of Lawrence, KS. One grandchild Robert Merz of Lawrence, KS. Wendelin grew up in a farming family and continued to be a farmer at heart by maintaining his large vegetable garden. He also enjoyed traveling and loved attending his children and grandchildren's sporting events. 

Wendelin was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus and a member of the American Legion.

Joan Rathbun, 84, passed away Saturday, July 31, 2021, at Smith County Memorial Hospital, Smith Center, KS. Joan
 was born September 2, 1936, in Smith County, KS, the daughter of Joseph
 and Elsie Mae (Webb) Robinson.&nbsp; On May 27, 1954, Joan married Richard 
Claude Rathbun, to this union they were blessed with three girls, Karen,
 Carolyn, and Louise. She 
was preceded in death by her parents, husband Richard, two brothers, 
Raymond, and Albert "Warren" Robinson and three sisters, Reva White, 
Lenora Hansen, and Violet Clark. Joan
 is survived by her three daughters, Karen (Russell) Baetz of Lebanon, 
Carolyn (Jim) Sanford and Louise (Darrell) Shellito all of Smith Center;
 eleven grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, nine great

Edward “Ed” Duane Swartz, 67, Alexander, Kansas, passed away Friday, July 30, 2021.

Ed was born September 8, 1953, in La Crosse, Kansas, the son of Henry
 Edward and Norma Jean (Clark) Swartz.&nbsp; A lifelong resident of Rush 
County, Kansas, he was a 1971 graduate of La Crosse High School, La 
Crosse, Kansas, and attended Barton County Community College, Great 
Bend, Kansas

Ed enjoyed farming, dirt-moving, hunting, playing basketball, 
watching various sports, and spending time with his friends and family. 
He loved listening to oldies music and playing outside with all his 
children, nieces, and nephews.

Ed met Louise Casey through a co-ed softball team in La Crosse, 
Kansas. The couple was married on April 23, 1983, at St. Michael’s 
Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

Survivors include:&nbsp; his wife, Louise Swartz, Alexander, Kansas; his 
children, Staci Kiewel (Daniel), Great Bend, Kansas, Emily Swartz, St. 
Joseph, Missouri, and Tanner Swartz (Codie), Olathe, Kansas; his 
granddaughter Makenzie Kiewel, Great Bend, Kansas; siblings, Susan 
Bailey (Ernie), Patti Johnson (Mike), and Steve Swartz (Loretta); 
brother-in-law, Lyle Seltmann. Ed is also survived by many nieces and 
nephews, and many close and lifelong friends.

White, grandson, Travis Hendrickson; brothers: Leroy Beckner, Melvin 
Beckner, Stanley Beckner, and David Beckner; her sister, Velma Dewey;

Logan resident Kathy “Kate” White passed away Friday, July 30, 2021,&nbsp; at the Kearney Regional Medical Center in Kearney, NE at the age of 67.

She was born May 6, 1954, in Concordia, KS the daughter of Laverne and
 Suzy (Motes) Monty.&nbsp; She worked as the social and activities director 
for the Logan Manor in Logan, Kansas.

She was united in marriage to Rodney White on August 18, 1972 in Beloit, Kansas.&nbsp; He survives.

Other survivors include her sons J.R. and wife Michelle of Grove, OK 
and Phillip of Sigurd, UT; four grandchildren; two brothers Arnold 
Williams and wife Bonnie of Logan and Doug Monty and wife Dee of Beloit;
 and a half sister Mary JoAnn Ertl and husband Loren of Hope, KS.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 3, 2021 
at the Logan Christian Church with Pastor Troy Buss officiating.&nbsp; The

Kathy 'Kate' White 

Ross Dee Larcom, 88, was called to the Lord July 29, 2021 at Dawson 
Place in Hill City, Kansas. His life began April 6, 1933, in McPherson, 
Kansas as the oldest child of Walter and Wannetta (Osborne) Larcom. 
Shortly after, his family moved to Augusta, Kansas where they raised 
Ross and his sister Twyla. Ross graduated from Augusta High School and 
continued to call all his classmates several times a year and required 
class reunions on a regular basis. 
 	At age eight, he worked until he could buy his first calf which 
came on a train in a crate. He hauled it home on his lap. Through his 
school years, Ross continued to buy cattle, Brown Swiss being his first 
love, and even an occasional horse. One of his favorite stories to tell 
was riding his horse, Pet, to school and in the school, up the stairs to
 his classroom. Although he had the occasional ornery story, his 
classmates loved and appreciated him. Some of his jobs growing up were 
plowing fields with a horse and plow, working at Firestone and the 
Mobile Oil Farm, which was not the type of farm Ross dreamed of. 
 	Once Ross graduated, he entered the United States Army as a Private
 First Class for two years and then in the Reserves for an additional 
eight years. He was an artillery surveyor, learned Morse Code, and 
bumped into Elvis once or twice. 
 	Following his Army discharge, he went to work for Mobile Oil 
(Socony Oil) and was stationed in Hill City, Kansas where he met his 
wife Carol Goodrow, June 23, 1955. Ross then went to work for Boeing in 
Wichita, so a long-distance relationship ensued. Exactly one year later 
June 23, 1956, the good-looking couple married and created quite the 
family tree with four daughters, 14 grandchildren, 26 great 
grandchildren, one bull, 12 cows and 12 handsome calves. 
 	Ross and Carol lived in Augusta for a few years until they moved to
 San Antonio, Texas where Ross went to work at Boeing for the next 19 
years as a Technical Representative working at the Lackland Air Force 
Base. The family regularly camped on the coast (Rockport, Texas) and 
enjoyed fishing and swimming. They raised their daughters who were 
involved in various activities and athletics. 
 	After retiring from Boeing, the couple brought their family back to
 Morland where Ross worked various jobs including custom wheat 
harvesting with his father-in-law, Carl Goodrow, hauling hogs for the 
Goodrow brothers until he purchased a farm in Lenora and returned to his
 love of owning cattle. Really, they were his pride and joy and were 
more like pets. If he could lift you, one might find themselves swung up
 onto the back of one of his bulls. Lucky for us, they didn’t move. 
 	The rest is what all of you know of him. He had a love for cattle, 
was proud of his wife and family and was a friend to all. God gave him 
five of the most powerful and determined women. He showed his truest 
self by allowing each one to become the best versions of themselves. 
With each generation the greatness took on another level of success and 
brought great pleasure in his older years. Ross never set out to change 
the world, but he raised his remarkable family that are. 
 	If Ross was anything, he was resilient; not only for his work 
ethic, but in his health also. He had a drive to provide for his family 
and work hard for every dollar earned. Twenty years of heart issues kept
 the doctors guessing on how he would manage to recover. As Dr. Handy 
said recently, “His situation is grave, but you can never write Ross 
off.” He lived twenty years past his life expectancy when he had his 
first massive heart attack at age 68. He recovered again and again and 
again and again. It was a common family joke that he had cashed in yet 
another one of his cat lives. 
 	Ross took the time to seek out individuals and just check in with 
them. He was good at just sitting down and having a good old-fashioned 
conversation. He was known for his friendly greetings and was always 
good for a smile. His warm smile, bright blue eyes, and how he made them
 feel, and the time he gave to everyone around him spoke volumes about 
him and how everyone will remember him. 
 	Ross leaves a legacy through each of his family members who carry 
many of his same traits. He was so very proud of each of us as his 
family was everything to him – his cows were a very close second. Ross 
and Carol just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in June. It was
 a life well lived.

enjoyed fishing and swimming. They raised their daughters who were 
involved in various activities and athletics. 
 	After retiring from Boeing, the couple brought their family back to
 Morland where Ross worked various jobs including custom wheat 
harvesting with his father-in-law, Carl Goodrow, hauling hogs for the 
Goodrow brothers until he purchased a farm in Lenora and returned to his
 love of owning cattle. Really, they were his pride and joy and were 
more like pets. If he could lift you, one might find themselves swung up
 onto the back of one of his bulls. Lucky for us, they didn’t move. 
 	The rest is what all of you know of him. He had a love for cattle, 
was proud of his wife and family and was a friend to all. God gave him 
five of the most powerful and determined women. He showed his truest 
self by allowing each one to become the best versions of themselves. 
With each generation the greatness took on another level of success and 
brought great pleasure in his older years. Ross never set out to change 
the world, but he raised his remarkable family that are. 
 	If Ross was anything, he was resilient; not only for his work 
ethic, but in his health also. He had a drive to provide for his family 
and work hard for every dollar earned. Twenty years of heart issues kept
 the doctors guessing on how he would manage to recover. As Dr. Handy 
said recently, “His situation is grave, but you can never write Ross 
off.” He lived twenty years past his life expectancy when he had his 
first massive heart attack at age 68. He recovered again and again and 
again and again. It was a common family joke that he had cashed in yet 
another one of his cat lives. 
 	Ross took the time to seek out individuals and just check in with 
them. He was good at just sitting down and having a good old-fashioned 
conversation. He was known for his friendly greetings and was always 
good for a smile. His warm smile, bright blue eyes, and how he made them
 feel, and the time he gave to everyone around him spoke volumes about 
him and how everyone will remember him. 
 	Ross leaves a legacy through each of his family members who carry 
many of his same traits. He was so very proud of each of us as his 
family was everything to him – his cows were a very close second. Ross 
and Carol just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in June. It was
 a life well lived.

Ross Dee Larcom

James Curtis Nease, 84, died Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at the Kansas 
Soldier’s Home, Fort Dodge, Kansas. He was a resident of Hays, Kansas 
for over 32 years.

He was born on February 12, 1937 the son of Shelley Austin and Helen 
Gwendolyn (Shearer) Nease. He was enlisted in the United State Army, 
United States Air Force, and the Kansas Army National Guard for a 
combined 20 years.

He served in Operation Desert Shield / Desert Storm 1990-1991 and as 
Past Post Commander at VFW Post 9076 in Hays, Kansas and VFW Post 7349 
in Kinsley, Kansas.

On December 29, 1967 in Anchorage, Alaska he married Constance Davis.
 They were married 33 years and later divorced in 2001. Connie lives in 
Hays, Kansas.

Survivors include: his daughter, Susan Bartlett and husband Kirby, 
Bison, Kansas; two sons, Daniel Nease, McPherson, Kansas and Michael 
Nease and wife Wendy, Hays, Kansas; and four grandchildren, Ashley, 
Kristen, Samuel, and Gabriel.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Robert Nease, 
and 6 sisters, Alma Robinson, Blanche Larson, Gladys Cripe, Virginia 
Coen, Barbara Cook, and Marilyn Lewis.

Private family services will be held at a later date. There will be no public viewing as cremation has taken place.

The family suggests memorials to the Kansas Soldiers Home Residents Activity Fund in care of Minnis Mortuary, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, Kansas 67801.

Glenn G. Ginther, 87, of Hays, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, July 7, 
2021, in his home with his loving family by his side.&nbsp; Glenn was born 
May 25, 1934 to George Gust and Ethel Della (Campbell) Ginther in 
Russell, Kansas.

Glenn graduated from High School in Gorham, Kansas and continued his 
education at Ft. Hays State earning his BS and MA.&nbsp; He was also a 
Professor at Ft. Hays State University’s Industrial Arts Department. He 
taught wood working, carpentry, wood finishing and upholstery. He was 
dedicated to his students’ accomplishments and learning, and he took 
pride in their subsequent successes.

Glenn was united in marriage with Marilyn Ruth Kraus on August 19, 1956, in Russell, KS.

Glenn was an active member of Hays First United Methodist Church for 
52 years.&nbsp; He had a beautiful tenor voice and sang both in the UMC choir
 and as a solo performer. He also sang in concerts during college and in
 a men’s quartet which was invited to sing at events throughout the 
Midwest.

He was a master woodworker and built a cabin at Cedar Bluff Lake as well as almost every piece of furniture in his home.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn Ginther; two sons: Gray 
Ginther and his wife Risa of Austin, TX and Brock Ginther and his wife 
Sarah of Kansas City, MO; and a sister, Faye Ann Pittman of Hays, KS.&nbsp; 
He especially found joy in his three grandchildren, Yui Ginther, Casey 
Johnston and Regan Johnston. Glenn was preceded in death by both parents
 and two sisters, Georgia Moore and Fern Radke.

A Memorial Service celebrating Glenn’s life will be held at 10:30 
a.m., Saturday, August 7, 2021, at Hays First United Methodist Church, 
305 W. 7th Street, Hays, KS 67601.&nbsp; In lieu of flowers

Sharon Lee (Smith) Shaw passed away quietly at her home in Roseville,
 California, on Thursday July 15, 2021 at the age of 85 years.

Sharon was born on April 10, 1936 in Springfield, Missouri to Troy 
Smith and Gertrude (Kirk) Smith.&nbsp; She attended public schools in the 
Springfield area and then her family moved to the California area where 
she went to school in Loomis, and graduated High School at Roseville 
High School in 1953.&nbsp; She continued her education through attending 
Sierra Junior college and received an AA Degree in 1956.&nbsp; During her 
childhood years she suffered two significant physical injuries; she had 
polio as a small child about 4 years old and then suffered the loss of 
an eye through an accident.&nbsp; She persevered through these injuries to go
 on and succeed in life.&nbsp;

Through a training program provided by the Department of 
Rehabilitation, she trained as a medical laboratory technician.&nbsp; Her 
first employment as a medical laboratory technician was with Sacramento 
County.&nbsp; Then, she worked 29 years for Kaiser Permanente, retiring as a 
Senior Laboratory Technician in 1996.&nbsp; She was active in a local church 
(Roseville Gospel Tabernacle) starting in 1948 as a 12-year-old and 
continuing until 1982.&nbsp; She worked in the Youth Department and later in 
the Sunday School Departments primary grades.

She married Rodney Shaw in 1960 and then had two daughters; Ronna and
 Rebecca.&nbsp; She and her husband left the Roseville church in 1982 to 
assist a small church group in Orangevale and relocated to Bridgeway 
Christian Church in 1998.&nbsp; Sharon’s life was one of grace and 
forgiveness to others.&nbsp; She had many friends, co-workers and children 
who loved her and she loved them.&nbsp; She married, she had wished for a 
large family (she came from a family five brothers and five sisters).&nbsp; 
However, she only had two daughters, but through the daughters and 
granddaughters she had 16 great grandchildren.&nbsp; She was able to hold 
each one of them and to love on them when they arrived.&nbsp; The joy of her 
life was to see some of them as often as she could, her love for 
children was boundless.&nbsp; Her greatest pleasure for the last three years 
has been when her grandson Casey could get her out of bed and into her 
wheelchair which allowed her to sit in the family room and watch her 
grandchildren play in our swimming pool.&nbsp; She fell in 2018 and injured 
her leg rendering her bedfast from that time until she passed.&nbsp; She 
never complained and rejoiced when people came to visit her.&nbsp; Her last 
day Wednesday was a joyful one for her, her sister Joan and two friends,
 Carol and Lorene visited her to sing songs and talk.&nbsp; That evening she 
ate a good meal and was sound asleep by 10:00, she left us the next 
morning.&nbsp; Given the extent of her childhood injuries, she lived a long 
life filled with adventure and excitement as the she served the Lord and
 watched for children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow up.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Troy and Gertrude Smith, a 
sister, Marva Stone, a brother, Charles (Sonny) Baker, on son-in-law 
Donald Courtright and a brother-in-law Thad Shelnutt.

She leaves to morn her husband of 61 ½ years; Rodney, her brothers, 
Troy (Bud) and Angela smith, George and Gayle Smith, Leonard Smith and 
Elmer Smith; her sisters, Joan Shelnutt, Alice and John Ynchausti, Mary 
and David Campbell. Her two daughters, Ronna and Dennis Davis, and 
Rebecca Courtright, grandchildren, Tom and Amanda Davis, Tim and 
Courtney Davis and Shawna and Greg Beam, Casey and Crystal Courtright, 
Cody and Suzie Courtright, Shara and Justin Hall and sixteen great 
grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held on Monday, July 26, 2021 in Roseville, 
California.&nbsp; A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, July 
31, 2021 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; A 
private burial will be held at Fairport Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be 
held from 9:00 AM to Service Time, Saturday at the Mortuary. Condolences
 may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of 
these arrangements.

Sharon Lee Shaw

Shirley Jane Fricker Kirchner died July 30, 2021, at KU Medical Center, Kansas City, KS, after a brief illness. She was 75.
 	Jane was born February 28, 1946, at Ingleboro Hospital, Smith 
Center, KS. Her parents were Keith and Merna (Upp) Fricker. Jane grew 
up on a farm north of Lebanon, KS, and, along with her brother, Roger, 
helped her parents with farm and household chores. She graduated from 
Lebanon High School in 1964 and attended college at Fort Hays State 
University for two years. College was not her “cup of tea”, however, so
 she returned to Smith County and was hired by the Smith County State 
Bank and Trust. When she retired 46 years later, from the position of 
Vice-President and Assistant Trust Officer, Linton Lull announced that 
she had successfully passed her probation period.
 	On January 27, 1968, Jane married James Kirchner at the Methodist 
Church in Lebanon, KS. To this union were born two daughters, Jennifer 
and Jessica.
 	Jane was a member of the Smith Center Church of the Nazarene. She 
served as treasurer for four local organizations: Daughters of the 
American Revolution, Red Hats, Garden Lore Club, and the Lebanon Alumni 
Association. Jane &amp; Jim were youth group sponsors for YFC in the 
70’s and 80’s. 
 In addition to these organizations, Jane served her community in 
other significant ways. She was treasurer of Meals on Wheels and, along
 with Jim, served as volunteer coordinator for 25 plus years. She 
worked on the Home Alone Board for 16 years. She was treasurer of Smith
 County Hospice since its beginning until it was incorporated with 
Northwest Kansas Hospice, and was its board chair until her death.
 	Jane and Jim loved to travel. They have been to 49 of the 50 
states, and to five continents. They made numerous mission trips 
together, traveling to Belize twice, the Philippines twice, and to 
Zambia six times. In between these trips, Jane was busy gathering 
supplies for hygiene kits and school supplies for backpacks as well as 
clothing and other needed items.
 	Jane is survived by her husband, Jim, Smith Center, KS; daughters 
Jennifer Boehler, and husband Mike, Laurel, Montana, and Jessica Kort, 
and husband, Brian, Juniata, Nebraska; grandchildren Dakota, Dalton and 
Darby Boehler and Cameron, Braiden and Kiera Kort; brother Roger 
Fricker, and wife, Laura, Lebanon, KS; Brother in law Richard Kirchner 
and wife Marian, Kansas City, MO; sister in law Mary Jo Arneson and 
husband Jim, Seward, NE; aunt Freda Groves, El Dorado, KS; and numerous

Lawrence J. “Larry” LaBarge, 79, Topeka, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2021.

Larry was born February 3, 1942, in Damar, Kansas, the son of Leonard and Caroline Newall LaBarge. He graduated from Damar High School and Fort Hays State University earning three degrees in education. Larry taught Spanish, English and Latin and spoke French and Italian. He also served as a counselor and administrator. Most of his career was spent in western Kansas where he was named Outstanding Young Educator. He retired from USD 501, Topeka, where he served at Jardine School. &nbsp;

On June 6, 1961, Larry and Joyce Dreiling were united in marriage. She survives.

He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, Knight of Columbus Council No. 8411 and the James W. Gibbons Fourth Degree Assembly.&nbsp;

Larry was a very talented woodworker who made many toys for his beloved children and grandchildren as well as donating many for the Church’s fund raisers.

Also surviving are Larry’s children, Monique Ellis, her husband, Shane, and Darin LaBarge; three grandchildren Madison, Maegan and Nolan LaBarge; great-grandson, Bennett Matthew; brother-in-law, Gerald Dreiling; and sisters-in-law, Jean Stabb and Shirley Bollig. Larry was preceded in death by his parents.&nbsp;

Visitation will be Tuesday, August 3, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church followed by the Fourth Degree Chalice Ceremony and rosary led by Knight of Columbus Council No. 8411 at 10:30. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at the Church.

Inurnment will be Saturday, August 7, at 1 p.m. in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Plainville, Kansas. A reception will follow in the Knights of Columbus Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King Church, Topeka or Sacred Heart School, Plainville and sent in care of Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Road, Topeka KS 66614.&nbsp;
