Robert P. (Bob) Chesney, age 92, of Hays, Kansas, died August 16, 2021, at Via Christi Village in Hays. He was born February 17, 1929, in Paradise, Kansas to Kent Loyal and Hazel (Day) Chesney. He married Verla L. Meyers on June 4, 1950.&nbsp; She died August 10, 1961.&nbsp; He married Judith A. (Weigel) Pfannenstiel on July 3, 1989.&nbsp;

He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays and a former member of Sacred Heart Church in Plainville, Kansas. He was a graduate of Woodston High School and Kansas State University with a two year curriculum in agriculture.

Bob was a farmer-rancher in the Woodston area of Rooks County for more than fifty years.&nbsp; He was a forty-five-year member of Hays High Plains Barbershop Chapter and one of their greatest promoters. He loved living in the country and spending time with family and friends.&nbsp; He especially enjoyed entertaining the grandchildren and used his talents to create toys and playground equipment for them. He will be remembered as a great conversationalist with a quick wit and a friendly smile.

Survivors include his wife, Judith A. Chesney of the home, three sons, Christopher P. Chesney (Cheri) Franklinton, NC; Samuel J. Chesney, Overland Park, KS; Kelly K. Chesney, Wichita, KS; two stepsons, Robert G. Pfannenstiel Jr. (Debra) Eureka, CA; Dustin Pfannenstiel, Hays, KS; stepdaughter Kimberleigh Chilcott (Robert) Larned, KS; six grandchildren, Heidi Chesney, Wayde Denning, Trevor Denning, Katrina Pfannenstiel, Damon Chilcott and Danielle Chilcott; brother in law Daniel Weigel, sister in law Sandra Leiker (Ernest), also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, parents, stepson Jesse Pfannenstiel, stepdaughter Kerri B. Pfannenstiel, grandson Christopher Robert Chesney, sister Evelyn Baumer, two brothers and their wives, Warren and Wanda Chesney, Homer and Eileen Chesney, a step great grandson, one niece and four nephews.

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Friday, September 3, 2021, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays. A rosary service will be at 9:30 AM prior to the funeral service. Memorial visitation will be Friday 9 AM until rosary time at the church.&nbsp;

Inurnment will be at 2:30 PM at the Woodston Cemetery, Woodston, Kansas.&nbsp;

Kathryn "Kathy" L. Blackwell, 75, passed away August 30, 2021, at Diversicare of Larned.

She was born June 17, 1946, in Wichita; the daughter of Hobert Jr. and
 Betty Jane Foster Yates.&nbsp; A longtime area resident, she was a 
Homemaker.&nbsp;

She was member of the First Presbyterian Church, Ladies Golf, Ladies Bowling and Bridge Club, all of Larned.

On February 18, 1968, she married David B. Blackwell in Dighton, Kansas.&nbsp; He survives.

Other survivors include; two daughters, Michelle Bradley, Wichita, and
 Staci (Tyson) Bundy, Riverside, Missouri; two brothers, Ron (Marilyn) 
Yates, Dodge City, David Yates, Healy; and five grandchildren, Sydney, 
Adam, Kash, Ace and Layla.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Janie Randles and her parents, Hobert and Betty Yates.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, the First Presbyterian 
Church, Larned with Pastor Bill Stapleton presiding.&nbsp; Visitation will be
 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday with family present from 5:00 p.m.&nbsp; -

Elnoria V. Allen, 82, died Saturday, August 29, 2021, at Harry Hines 
Hospice in Wichita, Kansas. She was born September 3, 1938, in Aubrey, 
Arkansas, the daughter of William &amp; Eula (Crockett) Holmes Sr. 
 Elnoria grew up in Moro, Arkansas, and was one of 5 siblings. On 
April 18, 1959, she married Rev. Robert R. Allen in Topeka, Kansas. 
They moved to Nicodemus, Kansas in 1967. In 1971, they moved to Garden 
City where Elnoria has lived since. While living in Garden City, she 
was a Nurse Aide at St. Catherine Hospital for 29 years, until her 
retirement in 2003. Elnoria was also known to have a variety of many 
roles, Mother, Aunt, Grandma, and even Great Grandma. She enjoyed 
Gospel music, traveling, eating out, and watching Family Feud on TV. 
 Survivors include five daughters Melodie Allen of Garden City, 
Kansas, Teresa Allen of Wichita, Kansas, Bobbie Allen of Kansas City, 
Missouri, Betty Allen of Garden City, Kansas, and Valerie Allen of 
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; nine Grandchildren; and ten Great 
Grandchildren. Elnoria is preceded in death by her husband Rev. Robert 
Allen who died on May 10, 2003. She is also preceded in death by a 
Grandson Demetrius Atkins, Jr.; three brothers; and one sister. 
 A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 
3, 2021 at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City with Rev. Roger Bradshaw 
officiating. A private interment will take place at a later time.

Elnoria V. Allen

Sharolyn J. Triplette Hughes Bennett, 75, passed away August 27, 
2021, at Diversicare of Larned, KS. She was born on December 21, 1945, 
at Great Bend, KS, and was adopted and raised by her maternal 
grandparents, George &amp; Hazel (Spencer) Triplette in Hoisington, KS. 
Sharolyn graduated from Hoisington High School in 1963. She loved to 
keep in contact with all her old classmates and attend class reunions.

Sharolyn was known for knowing everyone. This was due to her many 
years waitressing at Smokey’s Bar and Kiowa Kitchen. Her latest job was a
 door greeter at the Dream Center in Great Bend before she took ill. She
 was a people person and known for her red hair. She never missed her 
Friday beauty shop appointments. Her favorite hobbies were playing 
Bingo, crocheting, coffee club, attending local sporting events, and her
 dogs and cats.

Sharolyn had a daughter Tammy Triplette Voeltz in Oct. of 1968. Tammy
 is married to Lyle and lives in Lincoln, KS. They gave Sharolyn three 
grandchildren, Leslie Voeltz of Osborne, KS, Sara Voeltz of Lincoln, KS,
 and Lucas Voeltz of Lincoln, KS. Sharolyn married Mike Hughes in 1970 
and they had a son Christopher Michael (Red) Hughes in Aug. of 1971. 
Chris has one son Christopher Dylon Hughes, Jacksonville, FL, and one 
stepson Kashe Rhoda, OK; Sharolyn had five great grandchildren with one 
on the way in January 2022; and three step great grandchildren. She was 
preceded in death by her parents.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorial 
service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, September 5, 2021, at the 
First Church of God in Hoisington. A family graveside inurnment will be 
in the Hoisington Cemetery at a later date. Memorials have been

Sharolyn J. Bennett

Gerald Eugene Tubbs Sr., a Colby farmer, died Saturday, August 28, 
2021, at Prairie Senior Living Complex, in Colby. He was born December 
6, 1925, in Levant, KS, to George and Pearl (Carpenter) Tubbs. 
Gerald attended school in Levant until the 8th grade. After leaving 
school, he went to work for his brother-in-law, Willard Miller, and then
 went to work for his brother Wayne, in Vona, Colorado. There he met the
 love of his life, Rose Anna Bigelow. They were married on August 15, 
1946, in Colby. 
During his life, Gerald held many jobs. He was part of the crew working 
on the construction of I-70 and the building of the Levant elevator. He 
developed his love of farming while working for his brother and 
brother-in-law. In the 1950’s, Gerald started his custom harvesting 
business, traveling to Oklahoma and parts of Kansas, while still 
operating his own farm. He truly had a passion for farming. 
In his later years, Gerald enjoyed taking trips to Texas with his brother-in-law Dale Deaver and friends. 
Gerald had a special love for is family and especially enjoyed spending 
time with his grandkids and great grandkids. He would do anything for 
them. He also valued his friends and was loved by everyone who was 
fortunate enough to know him. He was a favorite of the staff at Fairview
 and Prairie Senior Living Complex. 
He was preceded in death by his wife, in 1970; parents; brothers, Fred, 
Wayne, George and Jim; and sisters, Viola, Isabella, Lorraine, Evelyn, 
Minnie, Elon and Blanche. 
Gerald is survived by his son Gerald Jr. and wife Juanelle; 
grandchildren, Christie (Justin) Foss, Jennifer Harold, Jeff (Lezley) 
Tubbs and Nick Tubbs; great grandchildren, AJ, Chase, Boston, Cash, 
Jaden and Boone and three great-grandchildren.

Robin Colleen Adams

Robert A. “Bob” Lawrence, 85, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, August 26, 2021. 
 He was born October 9, 1935, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Phillip Lawrence Sr. and Evelyn Lawrence (Montgomery). 
 Bob graduated from Will Rogers High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 
1953. He attended the University of Colorado on a football scholarship. 
Bob decided that school wasn’t for him and joined the Marine Corps in 
1954 through 1958 where he rose to the rank of Sergeant. While serving 
our country, he traveled all around the Pacific and Central America. He 
was selected for an elite Long Range Reconnaissance unit and was also a 
paratrooper. Up until the day he died, he was a proud former Marine. He 
was proud of his service to his country. The discipline he learned in 
the Marine Corps served him well throughout the rest of his life.
 After leaving the Marine Corps, he made his was to St. Joe, where 
he met the love of his life, Rosalia Tasset. They married in Troy, 
Kansas on August 19, 1958. They were married for over 61 years. During 
that time, they had five children that blessed their lives. Bob worked

One of his great hobbies was wood working. Bob made everything from toys
 to furniture that his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren 
will always cherish. He enjoyed the many family celebrations of 
birthdays, holidays, and graduations and cheered on his grandchildren at
 their sporting events.
 He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife; an infant son; and infant great-grandson.

 He was born October 9, 1935, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Phillip Lawrence Sr. and Evelyn Lawrence (Montgomery). 
 Bob graduated from Will Rogers High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 
1953. He attended the University of Colorado on a football scholarship. 
Bob decided that school wasn’t for him and joined the Marine Corps in 
1954 through 1958 where he rose to the rank of Sergeant. While serving 
our country, he traveled all around the Pacific and Central America. He 
was selected for an elite Long Range Reconnaissance unit and was also a 
paratrooper. Up until the day he died, he was a proud former Marine. He 
was proud of his service to his country. The discipline he learned in 
the Marine Corps served him well throughout the rest of his life.
 After leaving the Marine Corps, he made his was to St. Joe, where 
he met the love of his life, Rosalia Tasset. They married in Troy, 
Kansas on August 19, 1958. They were married for over 61 years. During 
that time, they had five children that blessed their lives. Bob worked

Robert A. 'Bob' Lawrence

Marolyn Lue (Davis) Lytle, 82, passed away Monday, August 30, 2021, at Smith Center Heath &amp; Rehab, Smith Center, KS. 
 Marolyn and her identical twin sister Carolyn Sue, were born June 30, 
1939, in Winfield, KS, the daughters of Gilbert Franklin and Mildred Una
 (Cowley) Davis.&nbsp; Two Years later their sister Kathlyn Lee joined them. 
 Marolyn's first home was in Rock, KS, where her father and uncle Rudy 
Davis operated a Grade A dairy south of Rock in Cowley County, KS.&nbsp; 
Marolyn attended grade school in Cambridge, KS, this was after Gilbert 
and Mildred moved their family to a farm outside of town.&nbsp; Marolyn and 
family then moved to Burden, KS where she graduated from Burden High 
School, class of 1957. Being twins, Marolyn and Carolyn 
decided to have a double wedding ceremony and they both were married on 
October 6, 1957, in Burden, KS.&nbsp;&nbsp; Marolyn was later divorced, but was 
blessed with a daughter, Ladonna Michele from that marriage. 
 Marolyn worked for 43 years as the Smith County Farm Bureau office 
secretary and was a member of the Kensington Assembly of God Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gilbert and Mildred. 
 Marolyn is survived by her daughter Ladonna (Michael) Weltmer of Smith
 Center; two grandsons, Philip (Jessica) Weltmer and Steven (Vanessa) 
Weltmer all of Smith Center; seven great-grandchildren, Kaden, Korey and
 Kaylee Weltmer and Tessa, Micah, Cora and Clara Weltmer all of Smith 
Center; twin sister, Carolyn (Harold) Daniels of Abilene, KS and 
youngest sister, Kathy (Richard) Lady of Independence, MO; two nieces,

Marolyn L. Lytle

Ralph Paul Melenson was born on March 14, 1940, in Grandview, Missouri, the seventh of eight children born to Oliver and Dorothea Elmer Melenson. Ralph passed away July 5, 2021, at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, Arkansas. His parents, grandparents, six brothers, and one sister predeceased him.

At a young age, Ralph followed his older brothers in becoming a caddy at Oakwood Country Club in Kansas City. It was there that he developed a love of, and passion for, golf. He soon began participating in junior golf events in the area, and he was a frequent winner. His skill and talent continued into adulthood until his health began to decline.

Ralph was an assistant golf pro in Silver Spring, Maryland, when he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Most of his military tour was spent in Korea until, because of illness, he returned to the mainland and was admitted to Walter Reed Military Hospital in Washington, DC to recuperate.&nbsp;

After being honorably discharged, he returned to Missouri. Subsequently, he moved to Kansas City and was employed by A&amp;P Grocers and St. Luke’s Hospital. In addition to this work, he also was co-owner of Melenson Landscaping.

Ralph was a perfectionist as well as a man of integrity, trust, determination, and perseverance. Most important to him was his Catholic faith.

In 2000, he and his wife, Phyllis, née Rietcheck, moved to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, where they became members of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. Ralph attended daily Mass, and he became a sacristan in the parish, as well as a Eucharistic Adorer and a member of local Knights of Columbus Council 10208. Each year he worked tirelessly to ensure that the annual K of C charity golf tournament was successful.

He is survived by his wife of thirty-six years, many cousins, nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass was celebrated on July 12 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church with Fr. William Elser officiating. Interment will be at a later date.

Betsy Petersen, 64, died Friday, August 27, 2021, at the University of 
Kansas, St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, Kansas. She was born August 3, 
1957, in Garden City, Kansas the daughter of Richard E. “Gene” and Kay M.
 (Hunt) Thompson. 
 Betsy has lived most of her life in Garden City. She attended 
Garden City schools and graduated from Garden City High School in 1975. 
 Betsy later attended and graduated from Garden City Community College 
before earning a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree in Education 
from Fort Hays State University. Betsy started her teaching career in 
1996 at Charles O. Stones Intermediate Center, teaching 5th and 6th 
grade. Betsy and her husband Drew later started Graph Ink which they 
currently own and operate. Betsy retired from teaching in 2019. 
Shortly after her retirement, Betsy and Drew moved to Abilene, Kansas 
and have lived in Abilene since. 
 Betsy is a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church in Abilene, Kansas,
 St. Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City, ESA, and she served as a 
Girl Scout Leader at St. Dominic’s for 11 years. 
 On May 23, 1975, she married Drew Petersen in Garden City. He 
survives. Other survivors include four children Addie (Spencer) Taylor 
of Lenexa, Kansas, Brooke (Joseph) Humphreys of Garden City, Kansas, 
Caitlin (Michael) LaMarr of Topeka, Kansas, and Soren (Kaytie) Petersen 
of Gardner, Kansas; three sisters Keianna Thompson of Allen, Kansas, 
Nancy Winsky of Admire, Kansas, and Charolette Lowder of Miller, Kansas;
 and 8 Grandchildren Jordan Humphreys, Koston Humphreys, Drew Humphreys,
 Jaqueline LaMarr, Lily LaMarr, Eleanor LaMarr, Harrison Petersen, &amp;
 Madelynn Petersen. Betsy is preceded in death by her parents and a 
Granddaughter Annie Lenore Taylor.

Janet Irene (Diederich) Laevenstein died Wednesday, August 25, 2021, at 
the age of 73. Janet was one of seven children born to Julius “Dulie” 
and Mae (Weaver) Diederich on January 6, 1948, in Selden, Kansas. Janet 
grew up in Selden and attended Selden Elementary School and Selden Rural
 High School. Before graduating, she decided to drop out of school and 
work at the HI-WAY Café, a restaurant her mother owned. Later on, Janet
 decided to return to school. In 1985, she graduated from Colby 
Community College with her GED. 
 Janet met the love of her life when she was working at the Café for 
her mother. A young man, Donald Laevenstein, became one of her regular 
customers. They began to date, and on May 25, 1968, Janet Irene 
Diederich and Donald Dean Laevenstein were united in marriage at the 
Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Selden, Kansas. Janet and Donald “Don” 
resided in Hoxie all their married life. In 1974, they were thrilled to
 adopt a baby girl, Jeannie and a year later to have a daughter, 
Shelly. They loved their daughters very much. Don unexpectedly passed 
away on August 15, 2008 leaving a huge hole in the hearts of his family.
 Janet worked for the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office as a 
dispatcher for many years before going to USD 412 School District as a 
cook and baker, and she also worked as a CNA. Janet and her sister, 
Darla, were co-owners of DJ’s upholstery. In her spare time and earlier
 years, she enjoyed sewing and crocheting. Janet was a member of the St.
 Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, St. Francis Cabrini Sodality and the 
Hoxie Elks. Janet was also a big fan of KU Basketball and never missed 
watching a game. She also spent many hours watching Open Spaces Sports 
supporting the Hoxie High School Athletes. 
 Janet leaves to mourn her passing daughters, Jeannie Hamrick of 
Plainville, Kansas and Shelly Kuhn (Keith) of Hoxie, Kansas; sisters, 
Leona Clark (Jerry) of Colby, Kansas and Darla Zerr (Albert) of Hoxie, 
Kansas; brothers, Dale Diederich of Olathe, Kansas and Dennis Diederich 
(Sandy) of Colby, Kansas; grandchildren, Ashley Kuhn and Andrew Kuhn;

Patricia Diane Payne, 66, Wichita, died Wednesday, August 25, 2021, in Wichita.

She was born March 15, 1955, in Hays, 
the daughter of Milton M. and Gracie (Stokes) Moore.&nbsp; Her battle with 
serious medical issues showed her courage in facing life challenges with
 her family until the end.&nbsp; Diane was the eldest of five little chicks 
and her chosen sisters, Grace (Nick) Phillips and Susan (Doug) Shaw.&nbsp; 
Diane loved her family and grandchildren dearly.&nbsp; She was funny, 
unpredictable, witty, clumsy, goofy, and had a big heart.&nbsp; Diane was a 
loving and caring wife, mother, and grandmother.&nbsp; Her smile along with 
her infectious laugh would light up a room.&nbsp; She will be dearly missed 
and forever in her family’s hearts.

Patricia Diane Payne

Early Years 
In his early years, Bill was a talented athlete, playing basketball, 
football, and track. He graduated from Ulysses High School in 1952. He 
served in the US Air Force at Reece Air Force Base, Lubbock, Texas, from
 1953-1957, where he reached the rank of Staff Sergeant and also managed
 the base swimming pools and program. He graduated from Pittsburg State 
University in 1963 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education/Industrial 
Arts. Bill began his teaching career at Excelsior Springs, MO, and 
shortly after started his teaching-coaching career at Emporia High 
School. Later, in Lawrence, he taught at Lawrence High School and West 
Jr High, where he coached basketball and achieved the longest winning 
streak in town. In 1973 he accepted the head coaching job at Hays High 
School, where he took the basketball team to the Kansas State Tourney 
for the first time in 18 years. 
From 1958-1966, Bill and his wife, Jo, managed the swimming pool/summer 
recreation program in Ulysses, and started the AAU competitive swimming 
program. Bill managed the Holiday Park Swim Pool in Lawrence, KS, and 
founded/coached the Lawrence Aquahawks Swim Team from 1967-1978. 
In 1976, he left teaching and began building homes and commercial 
buildings. Barnes Homes was known for the highest quality of 
construction. Bill was an exceptionally hard worker. He was blessed to 
have careers that he enjoyed: coaching/teaching youth and 
designing/building homes. 
Family 
William ‘Bill’ Myral Barnes, 88, was born May 11, 1933, in Prowers 
County, Colorado, to Katherine (Davis) Barnes and Perry Wendell Barnes. 
He passed away August 24, 2021, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Lawrence,
 Kansas. Bill was the oldest of four children. He is preceded in death 
by sisters Margie Puyear and Ava Mace, and sister-in-law Sheryl Barnes. 
Bill is survived by his wife of 66 years, Josandra ‘Jo’ Colleen (Heyman)
 Barnes; daughter Sharolyn Gayle Wagner (spouse: Jay Wagner) of Salina, 
Kansas; son William Brent Barnes (Vera Galchenko-Barnes) of Singapore; 
grandchildren: William Jacob Wagner (Elle Williams), Dr. Jacquelyn 
Christine Wagner (Dr. Lee Weiner), and Johnathan Paul Wagner; three 
great-grandsons; brother Homer Barnes (Carlotta); brother-in-law Donnie

William 'Bill' Myral Barnes

Patrick Alan Turner, 78, passed away August 27, 2021, in Marquette.

He was born July 2, 1943, in Wichita KS, the son of Leslie and 
Florence "Patsy" (Byers) Turner.&nbsp; Pat married Barbara Zimmerman on June 
7, 1998, and they made their home in Topeka until recently moving to 
Marquette.

Pat grew up in Wichita, spent his young adulthood in Pratt, and moved
 to Larned in 1973 to open Turner Tire.&nbsp; He spent a number of years in 
the tire business, then changed careers and was employed by the Kansas 
Department of Corrections in Larned and Topeka until his retirement in 
2006.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Pat was a member of St. Bridget Catholic Church of Lindsborg, a 
lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, Topeka Mustang Club, and the
 National Rifle Association.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Pat was well known for his big personality, his quick wit, booming 
voice, and a whistle that would make anyone stand at attention and bring
 the kids home from blocks away. He was a storyteller extraordinaire!&nbsp; 
Pat loved old cars and rock &amp; roll music.&nbsp; He loved to hunt and fish
 and enjoyed a good casino.&nbsp; He was known for being able to fix 
anything, and for wheeling and dealing - he loved a bargain! &nbsp;To his 
grandkids &amp; great-grandkids Pat was known as "Grandpa Patty Poo," 
and always served them popsicles for breakfast.&nbsp; He was a great cook and
 was famous for his pancakes. Pat loved life and dearly loved his family
 and friends.

Pat's survivors include his wife, Barbara; his children, Todd Turner,
 Larned; Theresa "Terry" (Jon) Palmer, Larned; Cory (Randi) Turner, 
Cherokee IA; Christopher (Shelly) Turner, Salina; Audrey (Mike) Farmer, 
Little River; his brothers, Robert (Sue) Turner, Wichita; Michael 
Turner, Fall River; and his Sister-in-law Joanie Turner, Lakeland FL. He
 is also survived by twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Timothy Turner; and brother, James Turner.

A memorial mass will be held&nbsp;at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 3, 2021,
 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Larned, with Father Bernard Felix 
presiding.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow in the Larned Cemetery. Cremation has 
taken place and there will be no visitation.

Patrick Alan Turner

Marvin Eugene Hines, 77, of Gardner, Ks, previously of Agra, Ks, passed away Oct. 10, 2020, at home. 
 Marvin was born Sept. 2, 1943, in Colby, Ks. to Lawrence Ray and 
Grace Anna (Brown) Hines. He grew up in Hoxie, Ks.; graduating in 1961. 
He then attended Fort Hays State University, graduating in 1966. Marvin 
then served in the U. S. Army with 1st Calvary Division stationed in 
Vietnam. Upon his return home he married Martha Rall (Marty) on July 27,
 1969. They settled in Agra in 1974. Marvin was a high school math and 
computer science teacher for 32 years in the Kensington school district 
retiring in 2006.
 Marvin was very active in the Agra community where he served as 
mayor for 16 years and was a 47-year member of the American Legion Post 
#357 in Agra.
 Marvin enjoyed fishing and family gatherings at the lake when his health was good.
 He was preceded in death by his parents. Marvin is survived by his 
wife, his children; Mandra and husband Ken Bess, Gardner, Ks. and Robyn 
Hines, El Paso, TX., five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
 A graveside service will be held on September 2, 2021, 5:00 P.M., at 
the Hoxie City Cemetery, Hoxie, Kansas. All Friends and family are

Marvin Eugene Hines

Ila Belle (Dibble) Hoar passed away on August 28, 2021, at Redbud Estates, Plainville, KS at the age of 93.
 Ila Belle was born on the family homestead in Osborne Co, KS, on 
April 14th, 1928, the last child of Arthur and Euphamie (Brittain) 
Dibble.
 She graduated from Woodston Rural High School in 1946, and then she 
completed her teaching certification at Fort Hays State College. She 
taught for two years at country schools, first at Liberty Bell, and then
 at Valley, just down the road from where she grew up. 
 On May 9th, 1948, she married Richard Gail Hoar at the Methodist 
Church in Woodston, KS. Together, they raised 5 daughters. They 
celebrated 72 years of marriage before Gail’s death on May 16th, 2020. 
 Ila Belle worked for John E. Jones Oil company in Woodston as a 
bookkeeper. She moved with the company to Stockton until her retirement.
 In 1982, she and Gail moved from their home north of Woodston to 
Stockton, where they lived until moving to the assisted living in 
Plainville in January 2019.
 Ila Belle enjoyed gardening, crocheting, quilting, ceramics and 
doing embroidery work, which she continued to do up until a week before 
her death.
 Ila Belle was a member of the Woodston United Methodist Church until
 it’s closing in June 2021. She taught Sunday School, helped with the 
Lord’s Acre Sale and the Women’s Annual Pheasant Dinner. 
 She is survived by her daughters Diana Luhman and husband Ray of 
Colby, KS, Brinda Hahn of Osborne, KS, Anita Conger &amp; Bonita Wagner 
and husband Tony, Stockton, KS, her sister Edna (Bob) McCall, Osborne, 
KS. She is also survived by her 10 grandchildren: David (Jennifer) 
Morrissey, Karrina (Craig) Brasser, Richard (Michele) Hahn, Rebecca 
(Mat) McNeal, Kristy (Scott) Nuzum, John (Tina) Conger, Jake Conger 
(Barb Ard), Jana (Joe) Becker, Scott (Jess) Wagner, and Travis (Betsy) 
Wagner. Ila Belle was blessed with 25 and 7/9 great grandchildren: 
Kalyn (Logan) Hower, Dalton &amp; Carter Brasser, Eli, Audrey &amp; 
Emree Hahn, Ashton, Brayden &amp; Tirion McNeal, Taylor Hahn, Cody, 
Colter, Jeston, Chase, Kya &amp; Trayven Conger, Missy &amp; DJ Ard, 
Harper &amp; Hallee Becker (Baby Hadlynn to arrive October 2021), Ayden 
&amp; Gemma Wagner, McKenna &amp; Kaden Varlack and Perri Wagner.
 Ila Belle was proceeded in death by her parents, husband Gail, 
daughter Valeria Morrissey, 5 brothers, an unnamed infant, Marshall,

 </figure>Ila Belle (Dibble) Hoar passed away on August 28, 2021, at Redbud Estates, Plainville, KS at the age of 93.
 Ila Belle was born on the family homestead in Osborne Co, KS, on 
April 14th, 1928, the last child of Arthur and Euphamie (Brittain) 
Dibble.
 She graduated from Woodston Rural High School in 1946, and then she 
completed her teaching certification at Fort Hays State College. She 
taught for two years at country schools, first at Liberty Bell, and then
 at Valley, just down the road from where she grew up. 
 On May 9th, 1948, she married Richard Gail Hoar at the Methodist 
Church in Woodston, KS. Together, they raised 5 daughters. They 
celebrated 72 years of marriage before Gail’s death on May 16th, 2020. 
 Ila Belle worked for John E. Jones Oil company in Woodston as a 
bookkeeper. She moved with the company to Stockton until her retirement.
 In 1982, she and Gail moved from their home north of Woodston to 
Stockton, where they lived until moving to the assisted living in 
Plainville in January 2019.
 Ila Belle enjoyed gardening, crocheting, quilting, ceramics and 
doing embroidery work, which she continued to do up until a week before 
her death.
 Ila Belle was a member of the Woodston United Methodist Church until
 it’s closing in June 2021. She taught Sunday School, helped with the 
Lord’s Acre Sale and the Women’s Annual Pheasant Dinner. 
 She is survived by her daughters Diana Luhman and husband Ray of 
Colby, KS, Brinda Hahn of Osborne, KS, Anita Conger &amp; Bonita Wagner 
and husband Tony, Stockton, KS, her sister Edna (Bob) McCall, Osborne, 
KS. She is also survived by her 10 grandchildren: David (Jennifer) 
Morrissey, Karrina (Craig) Brasser, Richard (Michele) Hahn, Rebecca 
(Mat) McNeal, Kristy (Scott) Nuzum, John (Tina) Conger, Jake Conger 
(Barb Ard), Jana (Joe) Becker, Scott (Jess) Wagner, and Travis (Betsy) 
Wagner. Ila Belle was blessed with 25 and 7/9 great grandchildren: 
Kalyn (Logan) Hower, Dalton &amp; Carter Brasser, Eli, Audrey &amp; 
Emree Hahn, Ashton, Brayden &amp; Tirion McNeal, Taylor Hahn, Cody, 
Colter, Jeston, Chase, Kya &amp; Trayven Conger, Missy &amp; DJ Ard, 
Harper &amp; Hallee Becker (Baby Hadlynn to arrive October 2021), Ayden 
&amp; Gemma Wagner, McKenna &amp; Kaden Varlack and Perri Wagner.

Ann Marie (Pieschl) Swander, 58, of Sylvan Grove, Kansas and formerly of Salina, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, August 25, 2021.&nbsp;

Ann was born October 30, 1962 in Liberal, Kansas.&nbsp; She was the daughter of Michael and Jeanette (Dreiling) Pieschl.&nbsp; She grew up in Salina, Kansas and graduated from Sacred Heart High School.&nbsp; She then attended and obtained a degree from Wichita State University in Dental Hygiene.&nbsp;

Ann was united in marriage to Fred Lee Swander on September 13, 1986 in Salina.&nbsp; This union was blessed with two daughters; Jessica and Molly.&nbsp; They made their home in Salina for over 35 years before moving close to Wilson Lake, her happy place.

Ann was a Registered Dental Hygienist for Dr. Brian Schaulis in Salina for over 30 years.&nbsp; She enjoyed reading, Gumping (mowing), cooking and was a proud Master Angler.&nbsp; Her greatest joy was being able to play with her grandbabies.

Ann’s surviving family include her husband of 34 years, Fred of the home; daughters, Jessica Mader (Gabe) of Lenexa, Kansas and Molly Tormey (Chad) of Valley Center, Kansas; brother, Tony Pieschl (Pat) of Wichita, Kansas; sister, Susan Lynn Anthony of Virginia; three grandchildren, Norah Mader, Declan Mader and Reid Tormey.

Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date. Ann Marie Swander

Alta Birdeena Stock Fahrenbruch was born February 18, 1927, to William 
Winton and Erma Fern Matson Stock in rural Hitchcock County NE. She 
passed away on August 22, 2021, at the Andbe Home, Norton, KS at the age 
of 94.
 Alta was the oldest of three children. Being a teacher was always 
Alta’s goal even as a little girl. She had a strong nurturing nature and
 wanted to be the teacher whenever she played with her siblings or other
 children. She attended District #3 Hitchcock County where she was 
double promoted, graduating from the 8th grade in 1939. She never 
wavered from her interest in becoming a teacher. While attending high 
school in Culbertson, Nebraska, she would substitute teach in the 4th 
grade while continuing to take three high school courses. Alta graduated
 from Culbertson High School in 1943 at the age of 16. Her first 
teaching job was in a one room schoolhouse in District #6 Hitchcock 
County. She went on to teach in other County schools. She continued her 
education while teaching in the classroom and raising three children of 
her own. Alta received a Bachelors of Education, and a Masters of 
Library Science from Fort Hays State University.
 After moving to Norton, Kansas in the fall of 1964, Alta taught 
third grade in the Norton school system for many years. She established 
and managed the Eisenhower Elementary Library. Alta’s commitment to 
education continued throughout her life. She enjoyed storytelling and 
reading aloud to children. She could quiet a room of restless children 
just by beginning to read or tell a story in a quiet voice. Her delight 
was in encouraging a reluctant reader, or in matching a book to a 
child’s interest. Alta continued to tutor students after her retirement 
in 1993. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren all remember Gram 
reading to them. Even this year, Alta had former students telling her 
that she was their favorite teacher!
 Growing flowers was Alta’s specialty. She was well known around 
Norton for the beautiful flowers she raised and cared for in a garden by
 her home in downtown Norton. Her garden was a riot of vibrant colors 
and fragrant blooms that she delighted in sharing with anyone who 
stopped by. Family was a priority for her, and she spent time being 
involved in their activities. Alta researched her family’s genealogy and
 created meticulous records. She was an accomplished cook and baker with
 her pies being the favorites of many.
 Alta Fahrenbruch was a woman of quiet, deep faith. She placed a high
 value on loyalty and integrity. Keeping your word and being honest were
 foundational values she stressed with her children, and with her 
students. 
 Alta and Don Fahrenbruch were high school sweethearts, marrying 
December 29, 1947. Three children were born to this marriage, Aleta 
Atkinson and her husband Bill Atkinson live in Georgetown, TX, Dea 
Fahrenbruch lives in Hays, KS, and Von Fahrenbruch and his wife Kris 
Fahrenbruch live in Norton, KS. 
 She is preceded in death by her parents, W. W. and Fern Stock; 
husband, Don Fahrenbruch; brother, Arthur Stock and sister-in-law Dixie 
Stock; sister, Lavena Marks and brother-in-law, Russ Marks; 
granddaughter, Honor Fahrenbruch, and great granddaughter, Savannah 
Borden. 
 Alta was loved by her family and friends who will miss her loyal 
support and encouragement. She is survived by her three children and 
their spouses. She is Gram to six grandchildren: Tamara Atkinson, Marc 
Atkinson and wife, Aimee, Daniel Atkinson and wife, Kelly, Kiel 
Fahrenbruch and wife, Kristen, and Kayla Pfannenstiel and husband Shane;
 nine great grandchildren: Ruby Borden, Caroline and Collin Fahrenbruch,
 Molly Atkinson, Sofia and Kayden Pfannenstiel, Jake and Cade Hall, and 
Rowan Atkinson; many nieces, nephews, friends, and former students also 
had a special place in her heart. 
 Memorial services will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, September 4, 
2021 at the Trinity Episcopal Church, Norton. Inurnment will follow at 
the Norton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 pm Friday, September

Alta Birdeena Fahrenbruch

The Reverend Thomas Eugene Hilger, 79, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, died of 
complications from congestive heart failure on Tuesday, August 3, 2021. 
Tom was born February 21, 1942, in Sterling, IL to Clinton Hilger and 
Mildred “Millie” (Currie) Hilger. Tom graduated from Carthage College in
 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, and from the Lutheran 
School of Theology in Chicago, IL in 1968 with a Master of Divinity. He 
was ordained as a pastor in the Lutheran Church of America on May 27, 
1968, and retired in April 2008. On July 29, 2018, he recognized the 
50th Anniversary of his Ordination, organized lovingly by his late son 
Mike. On December 27, 1964, he married Karen Louise Dotzert of Virginia,
 IL. They met playing clarinet in the college band and shared a love of 
music throughout their entire marriage. 

Pastor Tom served the following parishes: 
Trinity Lutheran in Utica, IL; Redeemer Lutheran in Plymouth, WI; Faith 
Lutheran in Wichita Falls, TX; St. Paul’s Lutheran and Ware’s Grove 
Lutheran in Hillsboro, IL; Trinity Lutheran in Hays, KS; Our Lord’s 
Lutheran in Oklahoma City, OK; St. Luke’s Lutheran in Richardson, TX, 
and Fjeldberg Lutheran in Huxley, IA. After retirement, he was interim 
pastor at University Lutheran in Norman, OK; Resurrection Lutheran in 
Yukon, OK; and St. Mark Lutheran in Midwest City, OK. Outside of 
ministry and youth ministry, Tom enjoyed gardening, singing, being a 4-H
 leader, fishing, bowling, and his many beloved dogs. 

Tom is survived by daughter Debbie Hilger 
Blanco (Julio) of Louisville, CO; son Steve Hilger (Sherry) of Lee’s 
Summit, MO; son David Hilger (Jen) of Norman, OK; grandchildren Gabe, 
Brooke, Kathryn, Anna, KyAnne, Max, Jake, Shannon, Nathanael, Matthew, 
and Oliver; a brother, Dan Hilger; brother-in-laws Steve Dotzert (Cindy)
 and John Dotzert (Lois). Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Karen 
Dotzert Hilger; his son, Michael Eugene Hilger; his sister, Jill Nailor;
 and his parents. 

Due to the pandemic, a private family 
memorial service will be held mid-October in Lee’s Summit, MO. Interment
 will take place at Garner Chapel Cemetery in Virginia, IL. In lieu of

The Rev. Thomas E Hilger

Lloyd M. Heeke, 89, of Great Bend passed away August 27, 2021, at 
Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood.&nbsp; He was born Feb. 20, 1932, on the 
farm Northwest of Lakin, to Henry and Clara (Laudick) Heeke.&nbsp;

Lloyd attended Lakin grade school and high school until enlisting in 
the United States Air Force.&nbsp; He attained the rank of Airman First 
Class.&nbsp; In 1953 Lloyd went to work for Kansas, Nebraska Natural Gas Co.,
 Lakin, then transferred to Hooker, Okla. in 1955 as meter man.&nbsp; In 
1969, he was transferred to Canadian, Texas as foreman of the Buffalo 
Wallow Gas field.&nbsp; Lloyd was then transferred to the Pawnee Rock area as
 the area supervisor in 1976, until his retirement in 1991.

Lloyd married Mary Ann Jones at Sacred Heart Church in Hooker, Okla.,
 March 2, 1957.&nbsp; To this union six children were born (three sons and 
three daughters).&nbsp; Mary Ann died Aug. 29, 1997.

Lloyd and his family enjoyed camping, boating, and many extended 
vacations and trips in their motor home.&nbsp; He was a member of Prince of 
Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Great Bend, and 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council #862, and volunteered for Meals on Wheels and at the Adoration Chapel.

Lloyd is survived by three sons, Keith Heeke of Great Bend, Phillip 
Heeke and wife Jane of Great Bend, and Leslie Heeke of Larned; two 
daughters, Nonette Clemens and husband Paul of Lewisburg, Pa. and 
LaVonne Reiser and husband Richard of Fisherville, Ky.; eight 
grandchildren, four great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.&nbsp; He
 was preceded in passing by his parents; five brothers, Arnold Heeke, 
Alvin Heeke, Vernon Heeke, Owen Heeke, and Merle Heeke; two sisters, 
infant Edna Corrine and Jeanne (Schiffelbine) Drake; and one daughter 
Rita Janniee.

Visitation will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, Sept.
 1, 2021, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Knights of Columbus Rosary and 
Vigil service at 7:00 p.m.&nbsp; Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 
10:00 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 2, 2021, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 
with Father Aneesh Parappanattu presiding. Interment will be in the 
Great Bend Cemetery with military honors conducted by the McConnell Air 
Force Honor Guard. Memorials have been suggested to Eternal Word

 </figure>Lloyd M. Heeke, 89, of Great Bend passed away August 27, 2021, at 
Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood.&nbsp; He was born Feb. 20, 1932, on the 
farm Northwest of Lakin, to Henry and Clara (Laudick) Heeke.&nbsp;Lloyd attended Lakin grade school and high school until enlisting in 
the United States Air Force.&nbsp; He attained the rank of Airman First 
Class.&nbsp; In 1953 Lloyd went to work for Kansas, Nebraska Natural Gas Co.,
 Lakin, then transferred to Hooker, Okla. in 1955 as meter man.&nbsp; In 
1969, he was transferred to Canadian, Texas as foreman of the Buffalo 
Wallow Gas field.&nbsp; Lloyd was then transferred to the Pawnee Rock area as
 the area supervisor in 1976, until his retirement in 1991.Lloyd married Mary Ann Jones at Sacred Heart Church in Hooker, Okla.,
 March 2, 1957.&nbsp; To this union six children were born (three sons and 
three daughters).&nbsp; Mary Ann died Aug. 29, 1997.Lloyd and his family enjoyed camping, boating, and many extended 
vacations and trips in their motor home.&nbsp; He was a member of Prince of 
Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Great Bend, and 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council #862, and volunteered for Meals on Wheels and at the Adoration Chapel.Lloyd is survived by three sons, Keith Heeke of Great Bend, Phillip 
Heeke and wife Jane of Great Bend, and Leslie Heeke of Larned; two 
daughters, Nonette Clemens and husband Paul of Lewisburg, Pa. and 
LaVonne Reiser and husband Richard of Fisherville, Ky.; eight 
grandchildren, four great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.&nbsp; He
 was preceded in passing by his parents; five brothers, Arnold Heeke, 
Alvin Heeke, Vernon Heeke, Owen Heeke, and Merle Heeke; two sisters, 
infant Edna Corrine and Jeanne (Schiffelbine) Drake; and one daughter 
Rita Janniee.Visitation will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, Sept.
 1, 2021, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Knights of Columbus Rosary and 
Vigil service at 7:00 p.m.&nbsp; Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 
10:00 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 2, 2021, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 
with Father Aneesh Parappanattu presiding. Interment will be in the 
Great Bend Cemetery with military honors conducted by the McConnell Air

Alfreda Louise Barry, 88, La Crosse, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, August 25, 2021, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing Bed, La Crosse, Kansas.

Alfreda was born April 29, 1933, in Hays, Kansas, the daughter of Alfred Lewis and Ruby Emma (Stacy) Obenhaus.&nbsp; She was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas.&nbsp; A 1952 graduate of La Crosse High School, La Crosse, Kansas, she worked in the housekeeping department of Green Acres Motel, La Crosse, Kansas, many years before her retirement.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

She married Lonny B. Barry at the EUB Church, La Crosse, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death May 7, 1970.

Survivors include:&nbsp; one daughter, Christy Barry (Debbie Carrasco), Hays, Kansas; two sons, Larry Barry (Brian Corn), Wichita, Kansas, and Ronald Barry, Independence, Missouri; two grandchildren, Shanna Aumiller and Kara Shanks; seven great grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Alvin Obenhaus, and Alfred Russell Obenhaus; a twin sister, Alberta Obenhaus; and two sisters, Letha Busch, and Jeannine Schmidt.

Graveside service will be Monday, August 30, 2021, at 10:00 A.M. at the La Crosse City Cemetery, La Crosse, Kansas, with Pastor Tom Ferch officiating.&nbsp; Interment will be in the La Crosse City Cemetery, La Crosse, Kansas.

Thomas Wayne Talbott of Garden City, Kansas passed away August 22, 2021 in Hays, Kansas at the age of 66.&nbsp;

He was born September 15, 1954 in 
Omaha, Nebraska, the son of William C. and Sue Ann (Baughman) Talbott.&nbsp; 
Tom received a Bachelor of Business Administration magna cum laude from 
Wichita State University in 1976 and a Master’s in Business 
Administration with honors from Harvard University in 1979.&nbsp; Tom became 
the youngest Vice President of the Coleman Company in its century-long 
history, in charge of acquisitions.&nbsp; At age 34, Tom became President and
 CEO of Brookover Companies.&nbsp; He rounded out his career owning and 
operating a successful horse breeding ranch and farming operation in 
Garden City for more than 30 years.

He is survived by his father: William 
C. Talbott (Nancy) of Hays, sons: Trent Talbott (Heidi and grandson 
Dylan) and Colby Talbott, all of Overland Park, daughter: Brooke Talbott
 of Wichita, brother: Jim Talbott of Wichita, half-brother: Steve 
Talbott (Blythe) of Dallas, TX, adopted brother: Scott Talbott (Lottie) 
of Wichita, adopted sister: Lynn Talbott of Kansas City, MO, two nieces,
 and two nephews.

Tom Talbott was preceded in death by his mother Sue Ann Baughman Talbott Scheldt.&nbsp;

Thomas Wayne Talbott

Julia Emma Heuszel, 98, passed away August 26, 2021, at Stafford 
County Hospital. She was born April 12, 1923, at Hunnewell, Kan. to 
Ernest &amp; Vernia (Lockwood) Trost. She married Robert Otto Heuszel on
 November 18, 1946, at Wichita.&nbsp; He died July 17, 2005.

Julia moved to Great Bend in 1947 and worked at CKMC in housekeeping.
 She was a member of Central Baptist Church. Julia loved spending time 
with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include, a son, Dale Heuszel and wife Michelle of Salina; a
 daughter Diane Fischer and husband Harold of Seward; four 
grandchildren, Zachary Heuszel, Dr. Amanda Heuszel, Matt Fischer and 
wife Jessica, and Tracy Fischer; and two great grandchildren, Nevaeh 
Fischer and Garrett Fischer. She was preceded in death by her parents; 
her husband, Robert Heuszel; a son, Dennis Heuszel; a brother, Earl 
Trost; and a sister, Hazel Bowman.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, August 
30, 2021, at Bryant Funeral Home, and 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Tuesday,

Julia Emma Heuszel

Ivan Joe Simmons was born in Ulysses, Kansas, to Ivan Joseph and Nellie 
Irene (Rankin) Simmons on March 23, 1934. He passed away on August 26, 
2021, at Morton County Senior Living Community in Elkhart, Kansas. 
Ivan attended Elementary School at Rolla, Kansas, and has a lot of great memories and many friends from that area. 
Along with his parents, and his younger sister, Verna Lee, they moved to
 Elkhart, Kansas, in the fall of 1948 when he entered his freshman year 
and became an “Elkhart Wildcat”! Ivan was very athletic and played 
football, basketball, ran track and played baseball with the Elkhart 
Town Team. During his high school years, two brothers, Gary Lynn 
Simmons and Jerry Wayne Simmons were added to his family. 
Upon graduation, he received a four year Football Scholarship to 
Panhandle State University. He became the nation’s total offensive yard
 leader among NAIA college football players by gaining 1,624 yards in 
nine games. 
Ivan and Ruth Ann (Brewer) Simmons were married on August 10, 1954, in 
Elkhart, Kansas, before their junior year of college, but continued with
 their education both graduating from OPSU in May of 1956 with their 
degrees. 
Ivan was drafted into the U.S. Army after graduating from college in 
1956 and served until 1958 as SP-4. He was assigned to the Artillery 
and Missile Center at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, and served with the Artillery 
Ballistic Meteorology Division. While serving in the Army he was 
recruited to play football with the U.S. Army team from Ft. Sill and 
traveled all over the nation playing against other military base teams. 
After Ivan’s release from the military, he became involved in ranching 
and farming and was actively serving on the following boards: Yarbrough 
School Board, Chairman of Western Production Credit Association, Texas 
County Irrigation Association, State and National Cattle’s Association, 
Elkhart/Eva Equity Co-op, Chairman of the First Church of God Board, 
Lifetime Member of OPSU Alumni Association, Teacher and Coach at 
Yarbrough and Elkhart Schools, County Commissioner of District #3, Texas
 County, Oklahoma, also serving as State President of the County 
Commissioner’s Association for several years. 
In the fall of 1978, Ivan was seriously injured when his right hand and 
arm were pulled into an ensilage cutter. Fortunately, our oldest son 
was present at the time of the accident and was able to stop the 
machinery and extricate him. With the help of several neighbors, he was
 rushed to the Southwest Medical Center in Liberal KS, where his arm was
 amputated below the elbow. 
We were so grateful and thankful that our family, neighbors and friends 
gave so completely to us their love and support to help us carry on with
 the ranching and farming. After much rehab and hard work, Ivan was 
fitted for a prosthesis. One was built with a hook for work and the 
other with a hand that would open and close and looked more natural. He
 soon was back working with the cattle and the farming. Many things 
were very difficult and frustrating for him as he struggled to carry his
 part of the work load. He made many trips to hospitals to encourage 
others who had been injured and were trying to cope with the loss of a 
limb. 
We purchased a car dealership in Guymon, OK, Texas County Chrysler, 
which we owned for 12 years before selling to Burtis Motors of Garden 
City, KS in 1987. 
In 2006, Ivan was hired as a Landman for Oxy Petroleum and Merit Energy.
 He worked in the Oil and Gas Industry until 2017 when the offices 
closed in this area. He enjoyed working with landowners and gas 
companies and spent many long hours and miles doing his job in this 
position. 
Ivan never gave up and continued to be involved on many boards and 
activities and keeping up with our wonderful and busy children, Mark 
Simmons and daughters, Katie and Kara, Gaylen; Candace Simmons Hinch and
 children, Ashton Lea and Lathe Hinch; and Rick and wife, Jori Worm 
Simmons and their children, Jordan and Dalli Simmons; and five 
great-grandchildren. 
A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, August 30, 2021, at 10:00 AM 
at the First Church of God in Elkhart with Pastor Denny Heubner 
officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date. Memorial

Ivan Joe Simmons

Paul D. Madden, age 73, passed away on Tuesday, August 24, 2021 in Topeka, Kansas. He was born October 5, 1947 to Carl and Mary Ann Madden at St. Rose Hospital in Great Bend, Kansas. 

Paul graduated from Great Bend High School in 1965. After high school, he attended Wichita Technical Institute in Wichita, Kansas, graduating from the electronics technology program in 1967. After proudly serving his country in the United States Army, he went on to graduate from Barton County Community College with an associate degree in 1974 and later graduated from Fort Hays State University with a Bachelor of Science in Business in 1978. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend who will be dearly missed.

Paul is survived by his son, Mike (Christi) Madden; daughter, Amy (Mike) Garza; brothers, Kent Madden and John Madden; sister, Jane Madden Fuhr; grandchildren, Devin, Carter, Brexton, Brenna, Garrett, Israel, Jude, Elynn, and Gracyn; niece, Gina; and nephews, Jason, Eric, Blake, Jared, Justin and Jeff.
