Sharon Lee (Smith) Shaw passed away quietly at her home in Roseville,
 California, on Thursday July 15, 2021 at the age of 85 years.

Sharon was born on April 10, 1936 in Springfield, Missouri to Troy 
Smith and Gertrude (Kirk) Smith.&nbsp; She attended public schools in the 
Springfield area and then her family moved to the California area where 
she went to school in Loomis, and graduated High School at Roseville 
High School in 1953.&nbsp; She continued her education through attending 
Sierra Junior college and received an AA Degree in 1956.&nbsp; During her 
childhood years she suffered two significant physical injuries; she had 
polio as a small child about 4 years old and then suffered the loss of 
an eye through an accident.&nbsp; She persevered through these injuries to go
 on and succeed in life.&nbsp;

Through a training program provided by the Department of 
Rehabilitation, she trained as a medical laboratory technician.&nbsp; Her 
first employment as a medical laboratory technician was with Sacramento 
County.&nbsp; Then, she worked 29 years for Kaiser Permanente, retiring as a 
Senior Laboratory Technician in 1996.&nbsp; She was active in a local church 
(Roseville Gospel Tabernacle) starting in 1948 as a 12-year-old and 
continuing until 1982.&nbsp; She worked in the Youth Department and later in 
the Sunday School Departments primary grades.

She married Rodney Shaw in 1960 and then had two daughters; Ronna and
 Rebecca.&nbsp; She and her husband left the Roseville church in 1982 to 
assist a small church group in Orangevale and relocated to Bridgeway 
Christian Church in 1998.&nbsp; Sharon’s life was one of grace and 
forgiveness to others.&nbsp; She had many friends, co-workers and children 
who loved her and she loved them.&nbsp; She married, she had wished for a 
large family (she came from a family five brothers and five sisters).&nbsp; 
However, she only had two daughters, but through the daughters and 
granddaughters she had 16 great grandchildren.&nbsp; She was able to hold 
each one of them and to love on them when they arrived.&nbsp; The joy of her 
life was to see some of them as often as she could, her love for 
children was boundless.&nbsp; Her greatest pleasure for the last three years 
has been when her grandson Casey could get her out of bed and into her 
wheelchair which allowed her to sit in the family room and watch her 
grandchildren play in our swimming pool.&nbsp; She fell in 2018 and injured 
her leg rendering her bedfast from that time until she passed.&nbsp; She 
never complained and rejoiced when people came to visit her.&nbsp; Her last 
day Wednesday was a joyful one for her, her sister Joan and two friends,
 Carol and Lorene visited her to sing songs and talk.&nbsp; That evening she 
ate a good meal and was sound asleep by 10:00, she left us the next 
morning.&nbsp; Given the extent of her childhood injuries, she lived a long 
life filled with adventure and excitement as the she served the Lord and
 watched for children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow up.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Troy and Gertrude Smith, a 
sister, Marva Stone, a brother, Charles (Sonny) Baker, on son-in-law 
Donald Courtright and a brother-in-law Thad Shelnutt.

She leaves to morn her husband of 61 ½ years; Rodney, her brothers, 
Troy (Bud) and Angela smith, George and Gayle Smith, Leonard Smith and 
Elmer Smith; her sisters, Joan Shelnutt, Alice and John Ynchausti, Mary 
and David Campbell. Her two daughters, Ronna and Dennis Davis, and 
Rebecca Courtright, grandchildren, Tom and Amanda Davis, Tim and 
Courtney Davis and Shawna and Greg Beam, Casey and Crystal Courtright, 
Cody and Suzie Courtright, Shara and Justin Hall and sixteen great 
grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held on Monday, July 26, 2021 in Roseville, 
California.&nbsp; A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, July 
31, 2021 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; A 
private burial will be held at Fairport Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be 
held from 9:00 AM to Service Time, Saturday at the Mortuary. Condolences
 may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of 
these arrangements.

Sharon Lee Shaw

Shirley Jane Fricker Kirchner died July 30, 2021, at KU Medical Center, Kansas City, KS, after a brief illness. She was 75.
 	Jane was born February 28, 1946, at Ingleboro Hospital, Smith 
Center, KS. Her parents were Keith and Merna (Upp) Fricker. Jane grew 
up on a farm north of Lebanon, KS, and, along with her brother, Roger, 
helped her parents with farm and household chores. She graduated from 
Lebanon High School in 1964 and attended college at Fort Hays State 
University for two years. College was not her “cup of tea”, however, so
 she returned to Smith County and was hired by the Smith County State 
Bank and Trust. When she retired 46 years later, from the position of 
Vice-President and Assistant Trust Officer, Linton Lull announced that 
she had successfully passed her probation period.
 	On January 27, 1968, Jane married James Kirchner at the Methodist 
Church in Lebanon, KS. To this union were born two daughters, Jennifer 
and Jessica.
 	Jane was a member of the Smith Center Church of the Nazarene. She 
served as treasurer for four local organizations: Daughters of the 
American Revolution, Red Hats, Garden Lore Club, and the Lebanon Alumni 
Association. Jane &amp; Jim were youth group sponsors for YFC in the 
70’s and 80’s. 
 In addition to these organizations, Jane served her community in 
other significant ways. She was treasurer of Meals on Wheels and, along
 with Jim, served as volunteer coordinator for 25 plus years. She 
worked on the Home Alone Board for 16 years. She was treasurer of Smith
 County Hospice since its beginning until it was incorporated with 
Northwest Kansas Hospice, and was its board chair until her death.
 	Jane and Jim loved to travel. They have been to 49 of the 50 
states, and to five continents. They made numerous mission trips 
together, traveling to Belize twice, the Philippines twice, and to 
Zambia six times. In between these trips, Jane was busy gathering 
supplies for hygiene kits and school supplies for backpacks as well as 
clothing and other needed items.
 	Jane is survived by her husband, Jim, Smith Center, KS; daughters 
Jennifer Boehler, and husband Mike, Laurel, Montana, and Jessica Kort, 
and husband, Brian, Juniata, Nebraska; grandchildren Dakota, Dalton and 
Darby Boehler and Cameron, Braiden and Kiera Kort; brother Roger 
Fricker, and wife, Laura, Lebanon, KS; Brother in law Richard Kirchner 
and wife Marian, Kansas City, MO; sister in law Mary Jo Arneson and 
husband Jim, Seward, NE; aunt Freda Groves, El Dorado, KS; and numerous 
nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Lawrence J. “Larry” LaBarge, 79, Topeka, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2021.

Larry was born February 3, 1942, in Damar, Kansas, the son of Leonard and Caroline Newall LaBarge. He graduated from Damar High School and Fort Hays State University earning three degrees in education. Larry taught Spanish, English and Latin and spoke French and Italian. He also served as a counselor and administrator. Most of his career was spent in western Kansas where he was named Outstanding Young Educator. He retired from USD 501, Topeka, where he served at Jardine School. &nbsp;

On June 6, 1961, Larry and Joyce Dreiling were united in marriage. She survives.

He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, Knight of Columbus Council No. 8411 and the James W. Gibbons Fourth Degree Assembly.&nbsp;

Larry was a very talented woodworker who made many toys for his beloved children and grandchildren as well as donating many for the Church’s fund raisers.

Also surviving are Larry’s children, Monique Ellis, her husband, Shane, and Darin LaBarge; three grandchildren Madison, Maegan and Nolan LaBarge; great-grandson, Bennett Matthew; brother-in-law, Gerald Dreiling; and sisters-in-law, Jean Stabb and Shirley Bollig. Larry was preceded in death by his parents.&nbsp;

Visitation will be Tuesday, August 3, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church followed by the Fourth Degree Chalice Ceremony and rosary led by Knight of Columbus Council No. 8411 at 10:30. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at the Church.

Inurnment will be Saturday, August 7, at 1 p.m. in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Plainville, Kansas. A reception will follow in the Knights of Columbus Hall.

Norton resident Arlene M. Sharp passed away Tuesday, &nbsp;July 20, 2021,&nbsp; at the Logan Manor Nursing Home in Logan, KS at the age of 80.

She was born July 19, 1941, in Benkelman, Nebraska the daughter of Henry “Hank” and Helen (Louch) Bernard.

She was united in marriage to Jackie Kier.&nbsp; To this union three 
children were born: &nbsp;Mickie L., Timothy Lee, and Sherry Arlene.&nbsp; The 
couple later divorced.&nbsp; She then met and married George “Butch” B. 
Sharp, but they too were divorced.

Arlene went to Nursing School in Alliance Ne and graduated in 1969 
with her LPN.&nbsp; She worked in Benkelman, NE, Straton, NE, and Wray, CO.&nbsp; 
She then worked at the Harmony Rehabilitation Center in Estes Park, CO.&nbsp;
 She was a member of Al-Anon for 25 years.&nbsp; She enjoyed crocheting, 
puzzles, playing cards, riding horses and motorcycles, but spending time
 with her grandchildren was her greatest joy.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister Maxine Reynolds and 
LaVeta Howard; a borther Marlin Henry Bernard; and three grandchildren 
Henry Adam “Hanky” Kier, Tyler Casey Jones, and Chad Daniel Kier.

Arlene is survived by her sons Mick Kier and wife Melody of Clayton, 
KS, Tim Kier and wife Kim of Martinsville, Virginia; a daughter Sherry 
Jones and husband A.J. of Denison, KS; 13 grandchildren; and 29 great 
grandchildren.

Cremation was planned.&nbsp; The family will conduct a memorial graveside 
service on Friday, August 6, 2021 at 10 a.m. in the Clayton Cemetery, 
Clayton, KS with Pastor Ron Martin officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Valley Hope, Norton, KS and may
 be sent in care of the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, P. O. Box 563,

John
 Fredrick William Thiede IV, age 60, of Hays, Kansas, died Tuesday, July
 27, 2021, at his home.&nbsp; He was born January 24, 1961, at Wausau, 
Wisconsin to John Fredrick W. and Darlene S. (Witter) Thiede.&nbsp; He 
married Cassie M. (Miller) on April 8, 1989, at Burlington, Colorado.

He was a line haul truck driver and rancher.&nbsp; John grew up and attended
 high school&nbsp; in Burlington, Colorado.&nbsp; He worked with his brothers in a
 cattle operation and a trucking company until moving to Hays in 2001.&nbsp; 
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Cassie Thiede, of the home; two sons, JT 
Thiede and fiancé, Kalesha Ellis, Burlington, CO; Cody Thiede and wife 
Anna, Victoria, KS; one daughter, Tiffanie Rohr and husband, Nathan, 
Hays, KS; one brother, Glen Thiede and wife, Sheryl, Midas, NV; five 
sisters, Charlayne Bancroft and husband, Jay, Vona, Co; Evone
 Waggoner and husband, Gregg, Quinter, KS; Kristine Richardson and 
husband, Eric, Burlington, CO; Paulette Thompson and husband, Rod, 
Stratton, CO; Debra Thiede and Danny Hill, Winnemucca, NV; two 
grandchildren, Lauraine Evans Thiede and Delilah Rose Thiede; and 
several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Justin Thiede 
and Walter “Wally” Thiede; one sister-in-law, Kim Thiede; three nephews,
 Jay Thiede, Trent Thiede and Evan “Bubba” Bancroft; and one niece, 
Dallas Thiede.

Services will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, July 31, 2021, at Trinity 
Lutheran Church, 2703 Fort Street, Hays, Kansas with Pastor Brenda

 Fredrick William Thiede IV, age 60, of Hays, Kansas, died Tuesday, July
 27, 2021, at his home.&nbsp; He was born January 24, 1961, at Wausau, 
Wisconsin to John Fredrick W. and Darlene S. (Witter) Thiede.&nbsp; He 
married Cassie M. (Miller) on April 8, 1989, at Burlington, Colorado.He was a line haul truck driver and rancher.&nbsp; John grew up and attended
 high school&nbsp; in Burlington, Colorado.&nbsp; He worked with his brothers in a
 cattle operation and a trucking company until moving to Hays in 2001.&nbsp; 
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family.&nbsp;Survivors include his wife, Cassie Thiede, of the home; two sons, JT 
Thiede and fiancé, Kalesha Ellis, Burlington, CO; Cody Thiede and wife

John Fredrick William Thiede IV

Pamela Kathryn (Schmidt) Shaffer, age 73, died Thursday, July 29, 2021, at her home in Hays, Kansas.

She was born April 15, 1948, in Hays, Kansas, the daughter of Felix and Angela (Beilman) Schmidt.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Thomas A. Schmidt; and sister, Phyllis A. Schmidt.

She is survived by her husband, Warren Shaffer, of the home; son, 
Zachary Shaffer and wife, Jaxinta, of Phoenix, A; daughter, Leah Shaffer
 and her husband, Benjamin Priess, of St. Charles, MO; sister, Sr. 
Judith Schmidt; sister-in-law, Doris Schmidt; sister, Marla Staab and 
brother-in-law, Dennis Staab; sister, Donna Schmidt and brother-in-law, 
Duane Coyle; grandchildren: Phoenix Muller, Ella Shaffer, Marcela 
Shaffer, Valentina Shaffer, Benjamin Priess, Jane Priess; goddaughter, 
Tessa Lindenburger; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pam grew up immersed in farm life among the Volga German community of 
Catharine. She excelled in academics at Marian High School in Hays.&nbsp; 
After graduation, she attended Fort Hays State University, then 
eventually was accepted to graduate school at the University of 
Arkansas, where she earned her masters and PhD in Medieval English and 
Linguistics.&nbsp; At the University of Arkansas in 1971, Pam met and 
eventually married Warren Shaffer, from Philadelphia, Penn., and the two
 went on to settle into their careers in Hays. &nbsp;Warren, as a therapist 
at the High Plains Mental Health Center and Pam, as instructor and 
eventual professor at Fort Hays State University.&nbsp;

Pam received tenure and went on to educate college students in a 
variety of courses including Intro to Linguistics, Composition and 
Medieval Literature.&nbsp; She served as a Writing Center director for many 
years, helping students improve their writing and shaping future tutors.

After 36 years of teaching, she retired and began work on a book of 
letters from her uncle Monsignor Firmin Schmidt.&nbsp; The book, titled 
“Letters to Mary: A Missionary Writes Home from New Guinea. 1959 to 
63.,” was published in 2020, and is available for purchase on Amazon or 
Hays local bookstores. True to form, she helped edit this obit.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, August 3, 2021,
 at St. Catherine Catholic Church, Catharine, Kansas with Father Earl 
Befort O.F.M. Cap. officiating.&nbsp; Burial will be in St. Catherine 
Cemetery.

A vigil service will be at 7:00 P.M. Monday, at Cline’s-Keithley 
Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601.

Pamela Kathryn (Schmidt) Shaffer

Dean G. Seems, 91, passed away Tuesday July 27, 2021, at the Smith County 
Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born on August 2, 
1929, to James and Ellen (Gibeau) Seems on the family farm southeast of 
Lebanon, Kansas. He was the fourth child of six children. 
 Dean attended Pleasant Hill Country School, while he assisted his 
father on the family farm. While helping his father he exhibited an 
enterprising spirit. At the age of 18 he purchased a combine and then 
started following the wheat harvest from southern Oklahoma to the 
Canadian border.
 In 1953 Uncle Sam came calling, and Dean found himself going through
 the United States Army boot camp. This was during the Korean War. 
After completing his basic training, it was determined by the powers 
that be to send half of the new soldiers to the war zone, and the other 
half to Germany. As fate would have it Dean was part of the group that 
went to Germany. Before taking his trip across the big pond he went 
home on leave so that he could propose to the beautiful lady he had been
 dating, Dorothy Giese from Smith County. Upon Dean’s return from the 
service, He and Dorothy were united in marriage on September 18, 1955. 
After the wedding they made their home east of Bellaire, KS, where he 
farmed and their first-born child, Bruce, was born.
 In 1958 the family moved to a farm east of Gaylord where the family 
grew with the addition of Karen and Brenda. This is where Dean and 
Dorothy farmed and raised their three children. 
 Dean was a member of the Farms Union, American Legion, and was a
 lifetime member of the VFW. He has served as vice president and 
president of the Smith County Fair Board. He Served on the Smith County
 planning commission. He was a member of The Farmers Union and St. John
 Lutheran Church in Athol, Kansas. He was on the church council at the 
American Lutheran Church. 
 Some of Dean’s personal accomplishments include being the Senior 
State Bowling Champion for 2001 and in 2005 he was honored by the 
National Sorghum Producers for first place in the 
conventional-till-non-irrigated division. 
 In 2005 the handsome Dean and beautiful Dorothy were honored to be crowned King and Queen of the Old Settlers Day Celebration.
 He enjoyed being outdoors on his farm, visiting with friends and 
acquaintances. His family was the light of his life. He enjoyed 
playing cards, horseshoes, watching Royals baseball and KU basketball.
 After retiring from farming, he assisted his wife in making her annual Christmas candy, while taste testing along the way.
 He will be sadly missed and always remembered for kind, loving ways 
and a smile that could make others around him smile and laugh.
 Dean was preceded in death by his parents, his three brothers (Glen, Lloyd, and Buryl), and one sister Betty Bock.
 Survivors include his wife Dorothy Seems of the home, son Bruce 
Seems of Gaylord KS; Karen Loyd and Gary Haws of Winfield KS; Brenda and
 Steve Cochran of Winfield KS; Granddaughter Melissa Griffith of Spring 
Hill KS; one surviving brother Daryl Seems of Melvern, KS; and many 
nieces and nephews.

Ronald J. "Ron" Molzahn, 76, Minot, died Thursday, July 29, 2021, in a Minot Hospital.
 Ronald was born February 4, 1945, in Lubbock, Texas to Joe and Ethel
 (True) Molzahn. He grew up in Norton, Kansas, and graduated from Norton
 Community High School with the Class of 1963. He attended trade school 
in Denver, CO and found employment for a couple of years prior to 
returning home to Norton.
 Ron was once married to Dixie Ives of Stockton, Kansas. From this union 2 sons were born.
 Ronald enlisted into the US Air Force on March 9, 1966. He was 
stationed throughout the Pacific Region during his 20 year career that 
also included a five year tour of duty at the Minot Air Force Base. He 
was honorably discharged in 1986 and remained in the Magic City.
 Ron was united in marriage to Marlene (Kalk) Breding on July 31, 
1987, in Minot. They called Minot home as they shared their love and 
family.
 Ron followed his military career with employment at Heller 
Automotive Service, Western Auto and Carquest (Minot Automotive Supply).
 In November of 2011, Ron started his own automotive repair business, 
Ron’s Mechanic Services. He operated the business from 2011 until July 
23, 2021.
 Ron was an active member of Trinity Evangelical Free Church, the 
Minot American Legion, Minot Rifle and Pistol Club and the NRA. Ron 
enjoyed bowling and time spent in the outdoors hunting and fishing. He 
valued Community service.
 Ron is survived by: his loving wife of nearly 34 years, Minot, son,
 Michael Molzahn of Stillwater, OK and Brian Molzahn of Wagoner, OK; 
Marlene’s children to include: Don (Mary) Breding of Playa DelRey, CA, 
Kandis Breding of Bottineau, ND, Kimberly (Ruelle) (Darryl) Papineau of 
Ft Collins, CO, Robb (Pam) Breding of Prior Lake, MN and Jason (Annie) 
Breding of Urbandale, IA; 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Reta Hawkins (Cody)

Clarence Floyd Kahle, 93, of Winona, died Wednesday, July 29, 2021, at 
The Logan County Hospital, in Oakley, KS. He was born November 15, 1927,
 in rural Logan County, KS. Clarence attended Winona Community School 
until his 8th grade. 

From this time on, farming and ranching were his 
life. On August 10, 1947, he was united in marriage with Patsy Babst. 
They celebrated 70 years of marriage. They always enjoyed the yearly 
summer vacations to the mountains or sightseeing in different states. 
Clarence was a hard worker all his life. His motto to life was “Never 
retire and if you do, you gotta keep busy.” In his younger years he and 
Patsy ran a dairy farm. Clarence always had a herd of cattle to attend 
to up until the past few years. He enjoyed being out in the fields 
farming or just driving around looking at the farm ground. Farming was 
the normal topic of conversation, until grandkids came along and then 
they were each made to feel very special. He loved old westerns, Dr. 
Pepper, ice cream before bed and going to the station in Winona daily. 
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy; parents; Harvey Kahle and 
Grace (Myers) Council, step-father, A. Dewey Council; brother; Roscoe 
Kahle; step-brother; Dewey Council, Jr.; brother-in law, Richard Babst 
and sisters-in-law, Margaret Kahle, Phyllis Council and Hazel Elaine 
Babst. 
Clarence is survived by his children, Kim (John) Bruggeman, of Hoxie, KS
 and Kurt (Pam) Kahle, of Monument KS; seven grandchildren, Jason

life. On August 10, 1947, he was united in marriage with Patsy Babst. 
They celebrated 70 years of marriage. They always enjoyed the yearly 
summer vacations to the mountains or sightseeing in different states. 
Clarence was a hard worker all his life. His motto to life was “Never 
retire and if you do, you gotta keep busy.” In his younger years he and 
Patsy ran a dairy farm. Clarence always had a herd of cattle to attend 
to up until the past few years. He enjoyed being out in the fields 
farming or just driving around looking at the farm ground. Farming was 
the normal topic of conversation, until grandkids came along and then 
they were each made to feel very special. He loved old westerns, Dr. 
Pepper, ice cream before bed and going to the station in Winona daily. 
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy; parents; Harvey Kahle and 
Grace (Myers) Council, step-father, A. Dewey Council; brother; Roscoe 
Kahle; step-brother; Dewey Council, Jr.; brother-in law, Richard Babst 
and sisters-in-law, Margaret Kahle, Phyllis Council and Hazel Elaine 
Babst. 
Clarence is survived by his children, Kim (John) Bruggeman, of Hoxie, KS
 and Kurt (Pam) Kahle, of Monument KS; seven grandchildren, Jason

Todd John Kuhlman, 49, of Oakley, died July 28, 2021. He was born July 
10, 1972, in Colby, KS, to Larry and Nancy (Seele) Kuhlman. Todd grew up

then served in the United States Marines from 1990-1995. Todd worked in 
construction and was a truck driver. He married Sherri Denton on 
September 12, 1997. Todd was a lifetime member of the Oakley VFW, a 3rd 
degree member of the Knights of Columbus, member of the Tri-State 
Coalition of Concerned Motorcyclists and ABATE of KS and was beginning 
the process to become a Mason. In his spare time, Todd loved riding 
motorcycles, bowling with his cousin Ben, doing wood working projects, 
being around friends, hogging the couch and watching TV. He was a 
certified wrestling referee and enjoyed umpiring softball and baseball. 
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Henry Kuhlman and Art and Darlene Seele. 
Todd is survived by Sherri; his daughter Tori Kuhlman and their beloved

Fern Ruth (Wire) Steinle, 90, of Dorrance, Kansas, passed away on

 She was born on June 18, 1931, in Dorrance, the daughter of Freda 
Anna (Janne) Wire and Claude Leo Wire. She grew up on the family farm 
south of Dorrance and graduated from Dorrance High School. After 
graduation on September 17, 1949, she married Melvin H. Steinle of 
Dorrance. They shared 53 years of marriage and Melvin preceded her in 
death in November 2002. 
 Fern was a devoted resident of the Dorrance Community and member of 
the Dorrance Lutheran Church. At the church she taught Catechism, was 
President of the Church Council for 12 years, sang in the choir, was a 
member of the ELCA women’s group and had other duties as requested of 
her. Her faith in Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior was shared and 
celebrated by her works and witness in this church. Most of her adult 
life she worked outside of the home.
 Fern is survived by her children, Barbara (Roy) Trickle of Basehor, 
KS and Alan Steinle of Dorrance, KS; granddaughter, Jenny (Loren) Jantz 
of Trophy Club, TX; two great-granddaughters, Payton and Kenzie Jantz of
 Trophy Club, TX; brothers, Robert (Dorothy) Wire and Theodore (Barbara)
 Wire; brother-in-law Dean (Janet) Steinle of Kimberling City, MO; and 
other extended family she loved dearly, including many nieces and 
nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Shirley (Coker) Stein, 88, died Thursday, July 29, 2021 at the Hodgeman County Health Center, Jetmore.

Shirley was born the daughter of Walter and Anna (Fercking) Coker on 
February 1, 1933 in Ness City, Kansas, where she also graduated high 
school.&nbsp; She later married Melvin J. Stein on November 3,1953 in Ness 
City and moved to Spearville, where she became a lifelong resident.&nbsp; She
 devoted her life to being a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great 
grandmother.&nbsp; In retirement she enjoyed working at the Spearville 
Mercantile, creating the most beautiful embroidery and much beloved baby
 blankets and quilts for all her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Shirley was a very active member of St. John Baptist Church where she
 volunteered for various duties including eucharistic minister, rosary 
leader, prayer chain member and funeral dinner volunteer.&nbsp; She was a 
member of the Daughters of Isabella, the Happy Knot Tiers and a 
volunteer driver assisting others in the community.&nbsp; She was a valued 
blood donor for the American Red Cross where she donated 102 pints.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,
 Melvin in 2011, 3 sisters, Helen Schraeder, Rebecca Kolbeck and Phyllis
 Schuette, 4 brothers, Raymond, Martin, John, and Donald Coker and 2 
grandchildren-in-law, Roch Miller II and Taylor Stein.

She will be greatly missed by her children and grandchildren, Anita

Shirley (Coker) Stein

Nancy L. (Zelfer) Opunui, 64, of Dighton, Kansas, passed away 
Saturday, July 24, 2021, at the Ascension Via Christi St. Francis 
Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. She was born on June 8, 1957, in Topeka, 
Kansas, the third child of Frank and Bertha (Johnson) Zelfer.

Nancy’s childhood was spent growing up in Emmett, Kansas before 
moving to Goodland, Kansas with her family. She then attended school in 
Brewster, Kansas, graduating in 1976. She later met the love of her 
life, Frank, in Goodland, while he was attending Vo-Tech. Frank began 
working in Dighton for the telephone company in 1979; they called 
Dighton home. On September 6, 1982, Nancy married Franklin “Frank” Keana
 Opunui in Ness City, Kansas. This union continued until his passing on 
January 7, 2021.&nbsp;

Nancy was a member of the First Christian Church in Dighton. She was a
 devoted homemaker and helped care for many ladies over the years, in 
town. She loved socializing at the Kwik Shop and was one to always find 
the best garage sales in the area. Nancy was known for her collection of
 Santas, which were&nbsp;more than 300 collected, and loved showing them off.
 She loved driving around in her green “Kermit” car. She didn’t get her 
driver's license until after she was 40 years old. Nancy always wanted 
to know what her nieces and nephews were up to; as she liked to brag 
about them to her friends and family.&nbsp;

Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and brother, Otis Zelfer.

Nancy leaves behind her siblings, Tom (Deloris) Zelfer, of 
Grainfield, Kansas, Peggy (Kenneth) Richmeier, of Hays, Kansas, Kelly 
(Julie) Zelfer, of New Rockford, North Dakota, and Sam (Diane) Zelfer, 
of Goodland, Kansas; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, 
one great-great-nephew; and many other family and friends.&nbsp;

Jerry L. Reese, 88, died Thursday July 29, 2021 at his home in Garden City. Jerry was born on Feb. 24, 1933 at the family home in Copeland to Victor E. and Jenny Marie (Sommerville) Reese. Jerry attended and graduated from the local schools and went on to serve in the Army. On Nov. 9, 1957, he married Sonya Unruh. Jerry and Sonya farmed near Copeland until 1984 when they moved to Johnson. In 1990, they moved to Garden City where he worked for the maintenance department at IBP. Jerry was undeniably hardworking and stubborn. He was an avid crossword player, witty and fun-loving; remembered by his family for being quite the character. He enjoyed taking vacations and camping, doing anything outdoors. In his spare time he refereed various leagues and was a fan of all sports. Above all Jerry loved his family dearly. He is survived by his children- Deborah Wells (Steve Flynn) of Le Mars, Iowa, Sherry Perkins of Garden City, Becky (Koll) Graybill of Copeland, Kevin (Jodi) Reese of Carroll, Iowa. Grandchildren- Prior Wells, Randy Moody, Kyle Rutledge, Justin Long, KT Graybill, Callie Graybill, and Angela Perkins. Siblings- Roger Reese, Barbara Downing, and Victor Reese. Along with numerous great-grandchildren and extended family. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, wife- Sonya, three brothers, two sisters, and granddaughter- Sonni Rutledge. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2021 at the Copeland United Methodist Church in Copeland, with Pastor Doug Harris officiating. Burial will follow in the Copeland Cemetery with graveside rites by the District #8 American Legion Honor Guard.

Longtime Goodland resident Mark DeWayne Bantam, 62, passed away at his home in Goodland on Thursday, July 29, 2021.

Mark was born at Ramstein Air Force Base in Heidelberg, Germany on Dec. 7, 1959 to Jerry D. and Donna (Breathouwer) Bantam.&nbsp; He was one of three children.&nbsp; Mark attended school in Norton and graduated from Norton High School in 1978.

Mark had a love for flying and was an agricultural spray pilot for most of his life.&nbsp; He enjoyed cooking, fishing, long-range marksmanship, woodworking, sprint car racing and off-roading. &nbsp;His larger than life presence and selflessness touched many lives. Mark will be truly missed among his family and friends.&nbsp;

Preceding him in death was his father Jerry, his paternal and maternal grandparents and one nephew, Ryan Bantam.

Surviving family includes his mother Donna Bantam of Norton; his significant other Marla Allen of Goodland; his son Joshua (Stephanie) Bantam of Wichita, two brothers; Michael (Patti) Bantam of Boise, Idaho, and Randy Bantam of Norton; two grandchildren Gavin and Shelby Bantam; one uncle Fred Lindenmeyer of Wichita; many cousins and a host of friends.

Pamela Kathryn (Schmidt) Shaffer – age 73, died Thursday, July 29, 2021 at her home in Hays.

She was born April 15, 1948, in Hays, the daughter of Felix and Angela (Beilman) Schmidt.

She is survived by her husband, Warren Shaffer, of the home; son, Zachary Shaffer and wife, Jaxinta, of Phoenix; daughter, Leah Shaffer and her husband, Benjamin Priess, of St. Charles, Mo.; sister, Sr. Judith Schmidt; sister-in-law, Doris Schmidt; sister, Marla Staab and brother-in-law, Dennis Staab; sister, Donna Schmidt and brother-in-law, Duane Coyle; grandchildren: Phoenix Muller, Ella Shaffer, Marcela Shaffer, Valentina Shaffer, Benjamin Priess, Jane Priess; goddaughter, Tessa Lindenburger; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pam grew up immersed in farm life among the Volga German community of Catharine. She excelled in academics at Marian High School in Hays. After graduation, she attended Fort Hays State University, then eventually was accepted to graduate school at the University of Arkansas, where she earned her master's and PhD in medieval English and linguistics. At the University of Arkansas in 1971, Pam met and eventually married Warren Shaffer, from Philadelphia, Pa., and the two went on to settle into their careers in Hays. Warren, as a therapist at the High Plains Mental Health Center and Pam, as instructor and eventual professor at Fort Hays State University.

Pam received tenure and went on to educate college students in a variety of courses including intro to linguistics, composition and medieval literature. She served as a writing center director for many years, helping students improve their writing and shaping future tutors.

After 36 years of teaching, she retired and began work on a book of letters from her uncle Monsignor Firmin Schmidt. The book, titled “Letters to Mary: A Missionary Writes Home from New Guinea. 1959 to 63.,” was published in 2020, and is available for purchase on Amazon or Hays local bookstores. True to form, she helped edit this obit.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2021, at St. Catherine Catholic Church, Catharine, Kansas with Father Earl Befort O.F.M. Cap. officiating. Burial will be in St. Catherine Cemetery.

A vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Monday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 E. 22nd St., Hays, KS 67601.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays and from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Catherine Catholic Church.

Wanda Jean (Deges) Thyfault-Thummel of Hays died Monday, July 12, 2021 at age 72 at the Santa Marta Plaza Health Services in Olathe. She was born March 2, 1949 to Leonard and Dorothea (Engel) Deges and grew up on the family farm by Grainfield.&nbsp; She married Clarence Thyfault on Aug. 8, 1972 in Grainfield, and from this union their son, John Phillip was born.&nbsp; Clarence preceded her in death on May 28, 1979. Then Wanda married Ralph Thummel on June 5, 1987 in Hays. He preceded her in death on March 4, 2021.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; Wanda graduated from Grainfield Rural High School in 1967, before earning her bachelor’s degree in sociology and elementary education in 1971, graduating with honors from Marymount College in Salina.&nbsp; She then obtained a master’s degree in elementary education in 1972, from Fort Hays State University Hays.

&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; Wanda had a 34-year career as an elementary school teacher in both third and&nbsp; fifth grade. She began her career as a third-grade teacher at St. Joseph’s Parochial School in Hays where she taught from 1971 to 1973, before moving to Plainville where she taught fifth grade from 1976 to 2005, (except one year of third grade).&nbsp; Mrs. “T," as students called her, possessed excellent teaching skills, knowledge and experience, which were recognized when she received the Teacher of the Year Award in Plainville in 1989, and by regularly being nominated for honors by former students.&nbsp; She was the favorite teacher of many students in Plainville and was regularly thanked by her former students for changing their lives.&nbsp; Mrs. “T” had a passion for teaching that was unmatched, caring deeply for each child, and striving to coax the most out of each child’s unique abilities. She combined toughness and high expectations with love and sincerity in a manner that helped students blossom.&nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; After retirement Wanda enjoyed outings with her friends, spending time with family (visiting and playing cards), reading current events and novels, knitting and completing numerous counted cross stitch projects.&nbsp; Wanda loved her family very much and was a textbook of family history and facts.&nbsp; Also, Wanda enjoyed sharing highlights about her son’s biomedical research accomplishments.&nbsp; In addition, Wanda enjoyed watching her grandsons Miles and Lincoln grow up, particularly tutoring them over the internet during the COVID-19 pandemic. Wanda and Ralph made monthly trips to see their grandsons and lavished them with love and attention.&nbsp; Although a fantastic teacher, Wanda’s favorite passion was being a grandmother.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; Survivors include her son, John Thyfault and wife, Jessica, Shawnee; two grandsons, Lincoln and Miles Thyfault; one sister, Eileen Curl and husband, Don, Beaumont, Texas; and Wanda’s brother’s wife, Trudy (Thyfault) Deges, Damar; and special aunt, Esther Weber, Salina; surviving members from the Thyfault family include sisters-in-law, Pat Sis; Trudy Deges; Cathy Smee and husband John; and Mary Engel and husband Ron; surviving members from the Thummel family include brother-in-law, Mark Thummel and wife, Melinda; four sisters-in-law, May Munk; Betty Striggow; Sister Mary Joe Thummel; and Theresa Kriley; also Wanda is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.

Wanda Jean (Deges) Thyfault-Thummel

Nancy L. (Zelfer) Opunui, 64, of Dighton, passed away Saturday, July 24, 2021, at the Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. She was born on June 8, 1957, in Topeka, the third child of Frank and Bertha (Johnson) Zelfer.

Nancy’s childhood was spent growing up in Emmett, before moving to Goodland with her family. She then attended school in Brewster, graduating in 1976.

She later met the love of her life, Frank, in Goodland, while he was attending vo-tech. Frank began working in Dighton for the telephone company in 1979; they called Dighton home. On Sept. 6, 1982, Nancy married Franklin “Frank” Keana Opunui in Ness City. This union continued until his passing on January 7, 2021.&nbsp;

Nancy was a member of the First Christian Church in Dighton. She was a devoted homemaker and helped care for many ladies over the years in town. She loved socializing at the Kwik Shop and was one to always find the best garage sales in the area. Nancy was known for her collection of Santas, which were&nbsp;more than 300 collected, and loved showing them off. She loved driving around in her green “Kermit” car. She didn’t get her driver's license until after she was 40 years old. Nancy always wanted to know what her nieces and nephews were up to, as she liked to brag about them to her friends and family.&nbsp;

Nancy leaves behind her siblings, Tom (Deloris) Zelfer, of Grainfield, Peggy (Kenneth) Richmeier, of Hays, Kelly (Julie) Zelfer, of New Rockford, N.D., and Sam (Diane) Zelfer, of Goodland; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, one great-great-nephew; and many other family and friends.&nbsp;

 </figure>Nancy L. (Zelfer) Opunui, 64, of Dighton, passed away Saturday, July 24, 2021, at the Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. She was born on June 8, 1957, in Topeka, the third child of Frank and Bertha (Johnson) Zelfer.Nancy’s childhood was spent growing up in Emmett, before moving to Goodland with her family. She then attended school in Brewster, graduating in 1976.She later met the love of her life, Frank, in Goodland, while he was attending vo-tech. Frank began working in Dighton for the telephone company in 1979; they called Dighton home. On Sept. 6, 1982, Nancy married Franklin “Frank” Keana Opunui in Ness City. This union continued until his passing on January 7, 2021.&nbsp;Nancy was a member of the First Christian Church in Dighton. She was a devoted homemaker and helped care for many ladies over the years in town. She loved socializing at the Kwik Shop and was one to always find the best garage sales in the area. Nancy was known for her collection of Santas, which were&nbsp;more than 300 collected, and loved showing them off. She loved driving around in her green “Kermit” car. She didn’t get her driver's license until after she was 40 years old. Nancy always wanted to know what her nieces and nephews were up to, as she liked to brag about them to her friends and family.&nbsp;Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and brother, Otis Zelfer.Nancy leaves behind her siblings, Tom (Deloris) Zelfer, of Grainfield, Peggy (Kenneth) Richmeier, of Hays, Kelly (Julie) Zelfer, of New Rockford, N.D., and Sam (Diane) Zelfer, of Goodland; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, one great-great-nephew; and many other family and friends.&nbsp;A private family burial service will take place at a later date in Goodland for both Nancy and Frank. Phillipsburg resident Arlen E. Ehm passed away Tuesday, July 27, 2021 at the Phillips County Retirement Center at the age of 86.

He was born August 27, 1934 in Phillips County, the son of John and Anna (Miller) Ehm.&nbsp; He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 until 1956.&nbsp;

He worked as a petroleum geologist in Alaska for many years.

Arlen was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Loren, and a sister Lavonne Baker.

Survivors include his three children: Kevin and wife Sherri of Anchorage, Alaska, Kraig and wife Celeste of Laingsburg, Mich., and Kim Ross and husband Donald of Clark, Mo.; two sisters Melba Bentz of Foley, Ala.; sister-in-law of Lois Ehm of Hutchinson; eight grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Cremation was planned. A private inurnment will take place at a later date in the Pleasant View (Dixon) Cemetery, Phillips County.
