Luella Jane (Kriegh) Duffey, 83, of Colby, passed from this life on 
September 1, 2021. Lue was born September 26, 1937, in Park, KS, the 
eighth of fourteen children, to Edgar and Edith (Cook) Kriegh. When Lue 
was two years of age, her family moved to Wallace, KS where she grew up 
in the native stone house originally built as the Superintendent’s 
Office for the Union Pacific Railroad. Lue graduated in 1956 from 
Wallace County High School, in Sharon Springs, KS. After graduation, she
 moved to Sharon Springs where she met her future husband, Harold Leon 
Duffey. Harold and Lue were married October 11, 1957 and she began life 
as a wife and farmer. They relocated to Rexford, KS and later purchased 
their farm near Menlo, KS where they farmed and raised livestock. Four 
children were born to Harold and Lue’s union. Lue continued farming 
after Harold’s passing, March 11, 2004. In 2012, she sold her farm and 
moved to Colby. 
In addition to farming and homemaking, Lue grew large gardens and 
preserved food for her family. Lue’s favorite pastimes were dancing, 
sewing, sports and being with children. She was an excellent seamstress,
 sewing clothing for her family, square dance attire, quilts, basketball
 uniforms and special occasion gowns. Her love of children was shown in 
attending her children and grandchildren’s school programs and 
activities, and in hosting Easter egg hunts, Halloween parties and 
enjoying holidays with her family. She and Harold were members of the 
Golden Buckles Square Dance Club, Colby, she coordinated dances for the 
Colby Singles Club, was a member of the Colby United Methodist Church, 
and volunteered with the Menlo Community Service Group and at Citizens 
Medical Center. In later years, she travelled to attend quilting 
conventions in Paducah, KY and Houston, TX, and to be with family and 
friends in cities and see large bodies of water not experienced by 
living in KS including Los Angeles, CA, Cancun, Mexico, and a Caribbean 
Polka Cruise. 
Lue was preceded in passing by her husband Harold; grandson Kelly 
Duffey; her parents; eight brothers, Delbert, Lawrence, Marvin, Junior, 
Max, Donnie, Ronnie, and Rex; two sisters, Edeline Fischer and Wanda 
Minnix; brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. 
Lue is survived by her four children, Dr. Cynthia Jane Weishapl (Dan), 
Colby, Harold Ray Duffey, Jr. (Wynn), Colby, Denise Kay Orth (Mark), 
Hays, and Luetta Mae Flanagin (Jay), Colby. She is also survived by six 
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, Cody Duffey, Tuscaloosa, AL,
 Jessica Orth and children Donovan and Cora, Hays; Aaron Orth, 
Nashville, TN; Jared Flanagin (Taylor) and daughter Austyn, Colby; 
Andrew Flanagin (Jenna) and son Maddax, Colby; and Kaitlyn Benoit 
(Alex), Damar. Lue is also survived by three sisters, Evelyn Gaschler 
(Art), Longmont, CO; Joann Radiel, Salina; and Leatha Kinney (Roger), 
Aurora, CO, as well as by many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and 
nephews (including great and great-great). 
Funeral Service is 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 7, 2021, at the Colby 
United Methodist Church, with a visitation from 8:30 a.m.-9:45 a.m. 
Burials will take place in Fairview Cemetery, Menlo. Memorials may be

Larry J. Jacobs, age 86, of Hays, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas. He was born in Quinter, Kansas, on July 17, 1935, to Joseph and Catharina Jacobs.

After graduating from Quinter High School, Larry enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he proudly served his country for three years before being honorably discharged. On April 2, 1955, Larry was united in marriage to Betty Ann Albin at St. Michael Catholic Church in Collyer, Kansas. To this union, six children were born. Larry and Betty enjoyed many years together working on the farm and caring for their family, until her passing in 2005, shortly before their 50th wedding anniversary.

Larry was a member of the Marine Corps League, and greatly enjoyed gardening, fishing and hunting. He also liked piloting small aircrafts and was an avid reader.

Larry is survived by his son Larry Joe (Kim) Jacobs of Kiowa, Colorado; daughters Susan Jacobs of Bonner Springs, Kansas, Linda (Randy) Pfeifer of Hays, Toni Jacobs of WaKeeney, Kansas, Carey (Jay) Fose of WaKeeney, and Sandy (Scott Nikas) Jacobs of San Rafael, California; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Larry was preceded in death by both parents; wife Betty; grandson Jarman Jacobs; and siblings Sam, Mary, Bill, Irene, Tillie, and Gilbert.

A visitation will be held from 9:00-10:00 AM on Friday, September 3, 2021, at Schmitt Funeral Home, WaKeeney. Funeral service will then be held at 10:00 AM, with burial to follow at Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery in WaKeeney.

Carolyn (Valk) Givens was born May 9, 1933, in Larned, Kansas, the 
daughter of Earl and Vivian Valk. She passed away on September 1, 2021,&nbsp; in Hillsboro, Kansas at the age of 88.

She was a 1951 graduate of Larned High School and a member of the First Christian Church in Pawnee Rock, Kansas.

She married Charles Givens, August 27, 1950, in Larned, Kansas. For 
many years, they lived on a farm southwest of Pawnee Rock, and later 
moved to Larned and Great Bend. Carolyn worked as an account clerk in 
the Reimbursement Office at Larned State Hospital for many years. She 
was an accomplished painter of ceramic, having sold many pieces locally,
 and, later on, internationally.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two infant sons.

Survivors include: two sons, David (Carla) Givens of Hillsboro, 
Robert (Greg Coykendall) Givens of Wichita; sister, Linda (LeRoy) Wilson
 of Cheney, Kansas; granddaughters, Angie Margritz of Hillsboro, Renee 
(Jonah) Gehring of Hillsboro, Kayla (Josh) Jones of Charleston, South 
Carolina, and Kimberly (Troy) Zindel of Wichita; and eight great 
grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 4, 2021, at 
Larned Cemetery with Bob Sallee presiding. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. 
to 8:00 p.m. Friday, September 3, 2021, at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. 
Burial will be in Larned Cemetery.

Joyce Elaine Maley, age 72, of Hays, Kansas, passed away on August 28, 2021, at Hays Medical Center with her family by her side. She was born on September 23, 1948, in Norton, Kansas, to Willard and Veda (Boland) Maley. She grew up in Edmond, Kansas, and graduated from Lenora High School in the class of 1966.&nbsp; She lived most of her life in Norton, Kansas, and later moved to Hays.&nbsp;

Joyce loved spending time with her family, going to garage sales, attending local dirt track races, talking on the phone, as well as chatting and drinking beer with friends.&nbsp;

She is survived by her mother, Veda, Hays; sisters Lanny Maley, Jolene Maley, both of Hays; and Janice Maley, Plainville; brothers James (Marilyn) Phillipsburg; Jerry, Roseburg, OR; Jan, Norton. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. She will be dearly missed and forever in her family’s hearts.&nbsp;

She is preceded in death by her son Tony Maley, father, sister Judy Kay Anderson, maternal and paternal grandparents.&nbsp;

Douglas Allen Beck, 61 of Russell, Kansas, passed away on Monday, August 9th, 2021, at the Russell Regional Hospital.

Doug was born October 20, 1959, in Hays Kansas.&nbsp; He was one of four 
children born to Wesley Eugene and Katherine (Dinkel) Beck.&nbsp; He was 
raised in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in 1977.

Doug was known by many in and around Russell as a talented artisan 
who’s craftmanship was on display in King of the Road RV and Camper 
interiors built in Russell in the early 1980s.&nbsp; He later spent his time
 in the Kansas oil patches as general roustabout.&nbsp; His latest employment
 was performing general maintenance and custodial duties for the USD 
407.&nbsp; When not working, Doug enjoyed spending time with his friends and 
family, showing and sharing his love of Bar-B-Que and attending the NHRA
 drag races in Topeka, of which he didn’t miss a race since the raceway 
opened in 1989.&nbsp; Friends and family knew him as a genuine friend, loving
 brother, uncle and great uncle with a generous heart and contagious 
laughter that will be missed by many.

Doug is survived by his sisters, Paula Shoemaker (Calvin) of 
Bellingham Washington; Dianne Crawford of Victoria, Kansas; brother, 
Gerry Beck (Melanie) of Olathe, Kansas; nieces, Julie (Brad) Clark of

Douglas Allen Beck

Glen F. Lojka, age 85, of Manhattan, died August 31, 2021, at Ascension Via Christi Village in Manhattan. 
 He was born July 22, 1936, in Cuba, Kansas, the son of Frank and Kristy (Plevka) Lojka. 
 Glen graduated from high school in Cuba, KS, in 1950, received his 
undergraduate and master’s degrees from Emporia State University and 
obtained his PhD in Industrial Arts and Physical Education from Kansas 
State University. 
 Dr. Lojka was a professor all of his life and taught in the Physical 
Education and Outdoor Recreation Departments at University of South 
Dakota, Fort Hays State University, Kansas State University and lastly 
Emporia State University. 
 He was a member of College Avenue United Methodist Church, North 
Central Kansas Quality Woodworkers, Riley County Historical Society and 
the Kansas Cartridge Association. Glen was also very active in both the 
Manhattan and Cuba communities. 
 Glen enjoyed woodworking and was an extremely talented wood carver and
 stone carver. His works can be seen though out many towns in Kansas. 
He was an avid collector of antique fire arms, he enjoyed outdoor 
activities but his greatest love was farming at his parent's homestead 
in Cuba, KS. 
 On June 19, 1965, in Copeland, Kansas, he was married to Barbara L. 
Blundell. Barbara survives of the home. Additional survivors include 
his two sons: Lee and his wife Shelly of Lincoln, NE, and Brian and his 
wife Tonya of Chesterfield, MO; three granddaughters: Brenna, Anna and 
Grace; and very special cousins: Don and Katherine Wilber, Mary Havel 
and her daughter Angela. 
 Glen was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters in infancy and by his cousin Edward Havel. 
 Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, September 4th,

 </figure>Glen F. Lojka, age 85, of Manhattan, died August 31, 2021, at Ascension Via Christi Village in Manhattan. 
 He was born July 22, 1936, in Cuba, Kansas, the son of Frank and Kristy (Plevka) Lojka. 
 Glen graduated from high school in Cuba, KS, in 1950, received his 
undergraduate and master’s degrees from Emporia State University and 
obtained his PhD in Industrial Arts and Physical Education from Kansas 
State University. 
 Dr. Lojka was a professor all of his life and taught in the Physical 
Education and Outdoor Recreation Departments at University of South 
Dakota, Fort Hays State University, Kansas State University and lastly 
Emporia State University. 
 He was a member of College Avenue United Methodist Church, North 
Central Kansas Quality Woodworkers, Riley County Historical Society and 
the Kansas Cartridge Association. Glen was also very active in both the 
Manhattan and Cuba communities. 
 Glen enjoyed woodworking and was an extremely talented wood carver and
 stone carver. His works can be seen though out many towns in Kansas. 
He was an avid collector of antique fire arms, he enjoyed outdoor 
activities but his greatest love was farming at his parent's homestead 
in Cuba, KS. 
 On June 19, 1965, in Copeland, Kansas, he was married to Barbara L. 
Blundell. Barbara survives of the home. Additional survivors include 
his two sons: Lee and his wife Shelly of Lincoln, NE, and Brian and his 
wife Tonya of Chesterfield, MO; three granddaughters: Brenna, Anna and 
Grace; and very special cousins: Don and Katherine Wilber, Mary Havel 
and her daughter Angela. 
 Glen was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters in infancy and by his cousin Edward Havel. 
 Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, September 4th, 
at the College Avenue United Methodist Church, 1609 College Avenue, 
Manhattan, KS, with Reverend Dr. Dennis L. Ackerman officiating. Face

Glen F. Lojka

Dr. Kelvin “Tod” Kerstetter of Manhattan, KS passed away at the age of 
58 on July 12 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka. Tod battled 
pancreatic cancer valiantly for 22 months. Full of love for his family 
and passion for his music, he maintained his belief that he was going to
 live a long full life with and for his family. During this battle, he 
continued to teach clarinet at Kansas State University, served as 
treasurer for the International Clarinet Association, and created 
YouTube videos where he performed many of his clarinet arrangements 
including Bohemian Rhapsody (and joking with his children that since he 
had 81 followers he should sell “merch”). Be sure to look him up on 
YouTube and “follow” him. He’ll be laughing in heaven over that. 
Tod was born in 1963 in Hays, Kansas, to Elizabeth (Edwards) and Rex 
Kerstetter. After Tod’s father earned his doctorate at Florida State 
University, his family moved from Tallahassee, Florida to Greenville, SC
 where Tod spent most of his childhood and young adulthood. Tod was an 
all-state clarinetist, was awarded the John Philip Sousa Award, and was 
valedictorian of his class at Berea High School. He earned a B.M. from 
Furman University (Greenville, SC), an M.M. from Indiana University, and
 a D.M.A. from the University of Georgia. 
Tod and his wife first met when Tod was playing saxophone on the street 
in Aspen, Colorado, to earn tips. A friend told them that they were both
 going to Indiana University the following fall, and Jackie thought to 
herself, “I’m going to pursue him at IU.” When at IU, Jackie had already
 decided after a week of friendship with Tod, that she was going to 
marry him. It took Tod a bit more time to figure that out, but he came 
to his senses and they were married in 1989. They spent the early years 
of their married life freelancing in orchestras near Greenville, SC and 
teaching part time at Furman University; they then attended University 
of Georgia for their doctoral work; moved to Bowling Green, KY where Tod
 had his first full-time position at Western Kentucky University; and 
then in 1999, they each were offered a tenure-track position in the 
music department at Kansas State University. 
Tod was a loving father, and he thought the world of his sons David (13)
 and Jordan (10). He shared his love of music, plants, and sports with 
his sons, and he enjoyed playing hot wheels and flying RC planes, 
helicopters and drones. Mostly, he shared his love of travel with his 
family, meticulously making vacation plans most summers. One of his 
favorite vacation destinations was Hawaii, where he spent many hours 
snorkeling, swimming and boogie boarding in the ocean, visiting parks 
and other sites, and enjoying Hawaiian culture. 
Tod is survived by his wife Jackie and their sons David and Jordan; by 
his brother Ted, wife Alicia, and child Bella (Madison, AL); his 
mother-in-law, Olga Fassler; and by Jackie’s siblings, Connie and family
 (Albuquerque, NM), Tom (Beijing, China), and Cathy and family 
(Bloomington, IL). He was preceded in death by his mother and father, 
Elizabeth and Rex; and by his father-in-law, Fred Fassler. 
Tod’s K-State family and students were very important to him. Jackie has
 found consolation in reading all of the notes from students and 
friends, and she would like to share these words written by one of his 
former students Rachel Palmberg. These words summarize Tod’s legacy of 
teaching. 
“Words can’t begin to describe what Tod meant to me at K-State, nor the 
weight of his passing. I am grateful to have gotten to know your family 
while I was in Manhattan; even a bit. Tod was the final deciding factor 
that brought me to KSU. I did a campus tour and was feeling overwhelmed 
before ending the day with a lesson with Tod. He made me feel warm and 
welcome straight away. He was one of the most genuine people I know. 
Even as a high school senior, I was drawn not only to his talent and 
knowledge, but to his kindness and empathy. 
‘Tod made me feel seen and known as I navigated my early 20s. Even as it
 became more and more clear I wouldn’t pursue a career in music after 
graduation, he still encouraged me and supported me every step of the 
way. He valued his students as people, not just musicians. He was a 
father figure to so many in his decades as an educator, which deepens 
the weight of his loss. I am grateful not only for the short time I had 
with him, but also for the scores of other lives he touched. I believe 
God used Tod to influence a generation of young adults in the crucial 
time they were growing into who they would become. 
‘His sudden passing is a severe injustice, but drops of his identity 
live on in your family, his colleagues, and his students. That is what I
 am choosing to celebrate between the tears.” 
Tod, we will miss you deeply, but are filled with joy that your legacy 
lives on through your family, friends, students, music recordings, and 
YouTube clips. 
We are grateful for the Via Christi ER staff that helped Tod on the 
night of July 3 and to all of the staff at Stormont Vail who helped him 
after that. Because of you, Tod and Jackie were able to celebrate their 
32nd anniversary before he passed. We are also incredibly thankful for 
all the doctors and nurses who treated Tod at the Cancer Center of KS in
 Manhattan, at KU Med, and especially Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.

months we had with Tod.

Dr. Kelvin 'Tod' Kerstetter

Meryl Elmer Grosshans, 82, of Minneapolis passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 31, 2021.

Meryl was
 born May 21, 1939, to Elmer and Clara Grosshans in the family farmhouse
 near Ruskin, Neb.&nbsp; As a toddler, Meryl’s family moved to Scott City, 
Kan., where he spent his formative years.&nbsp; He graduated from Scott City 
High School in 1957 and received a bachelor’s degree in history from 
Fort Hays State University in 1962.&nbsp;

While at 
FHSU, he met and fell in love with Patricia Ann “Pat” Scheck, and the 
two were united in marriage on August 25, 1962. He spent 43 years 
teaching middle school and high school students in Bunker Hill 
(1963-65), Garden City (1967-68) and for USD 239 (1965-67, 1968-2008).&nbsp; 
Meryl taught students, then their children, and then the grandchildren 
of his first students.

It was 
during his first teaching job in Bunker Hill that he was asked to teach 
French because of his three semesters of French in college.&nbsp; He told his
 class of five girls that he would be learning right along with them and
 ended up discovering a love of foreign language.&nbsp;

Meryl 
completed two French immersion programs through the government-based 
National Defense Education Act (NDEA), first studying at Oakland 
University in Pontiac, Michigan, in 1968 and in France, in 1969.&nbsp; He 
earned a Master’s Degree in French from Emporia State University in 
1970.

His 
school days were filled teaching United States history and government, 
current events, English, French and Spanish.&nbsp; He also served as high 
school principal for five years before returning to the classroom in 
order to spend more hands-on time with students.&nbsp; After his “retirement”
 in 1995, he spent the next 13 years teaching high school French and 
Spanish on a part-time basis.&nbsp; He also volunteered to teach foreign 
language to area pre-school children and adults.&nbsp; Monsieur Grosshans, or
 Señor Grosshans to some, took great pleasure in seeing students light 
up when an idea “clicked.”&nbsp; He was selected as one of Teen Ink’s 
Teachers of the Year for 2001-2002 and was inducted into the Kansas 
Teachers Hall of Fame in 2002.

He was 
passionate about learning at every opportunity.&nbsp; A favorite family story
 is when one of his young granddaughters realized she was actually 
learning when she thought she was simply playing with Grandpa.&nbsp; She 
threw up her hands and said, “Everything with Grandpa is learn, learn, 
learn!”&nbsp; He always chuckled when that story was retold.&nbsp;

Meryl 
enjoyed anything to do with sports, whether it be as a spectator, player
 or coach.&nbsp; He was a member of an undefeated Scott City High School 
football team and played semi-pro baseball as a young adult. He also 
spent many years playing recreational basketball and fast-pitch 
softball.&nbsp; There were also countless hours of backyard baseball and 
football games with his children that neighbors would enjoy as they 
drove by the house. His kids would tease him during road trips when 
everyone in the car would be forced to listen to whatever sporting event
 he could find on the radio, whether it was coming in clearly or not! He
 spent many years as the Director of the Ottawa County Recreation 
Commission, as well as the Athletic Director for Minneapolis High 
School.&nbsp; In addition, he devoted countless hours to coaching baseball in
 the summer.&nbsp; He also volunteered as an assistant baseball coach as MHS 
launched its baseball program.

Meryl 
loved history, a good book, playing cards, crossword puzzles and 
dancing.&nbsp; After the kids were out of the house, he and Pat spent many 
years country dancing and would arrange their schedule so as not to miss
 Friday night outings at the dance club.&nbsp; They also participated in a 
group that would entertain at rest homes and various events in the 
area.&nbsp; He loved adding a little extra pizzazz to his moves on the dance 
floor when his family and friends were there to watch!

More than
 anything, Meryl enjoyed being a father.&nbsp; His two children - Alan and 
Lora - were blessed to have such a supportive and loving dad.&nbsp; He was 
always at their concerts, in the stands, asking about their day and 
picking them up when they needed a lift.&nbsp; His grandchildren always 
received the same affection.

He was a 
faithful member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for more 
than 55 years, where he served as a lector, usher and then altar server 
when he was able to attend daily Mass during retirement. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Meryl was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings who died in childhood.&nbsp;

He is 
survived by Pat, his wife of 59 years; two children; Alan (Tracy) of 
Aurora, CO, and Lora (Alan) Woolever of Kansas City, MO; four adoring 
grandchildren, Delanee, Camryn and Kendall Grosshans and Andrew 
Woolever; sister Iona “Onie” Grosshans of Salt Lake City, UT, and 
brother James (Karen) Grosshans of Sidney, NE.

Visitation
 will be Friday, September 3 from 2:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at Wilson 
Family Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 to 
7:00 P.M. &nbsp;Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, 
September 4 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and burial will 
follow in Highland Cemetery.&nbsp; The family is requesting masks to be worn at all events.&nbsp;

Cheryl K. France, age 76, passed away on Wednesday, September 1, 
2021, at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born 
on May 17, 1945, in Ellsworth, Kansas, the daughter of Arthur A. and 
Catherine E. Janssen Huseman. She was a dietitian and homemaker.

On August 8, 1967, she married Lester D. Martin.&nbsp; He passed away on 
May 26, 2004, in Scott City, Kansas. On July 19, 1991, Cheryl married 
her longtime friend, Leon E. France, in Las Vegas, Nevada.&nbsp; Together 
they enjoyed traveling, spending time with their children, 
grandchildren, and friends and family.

Survivors include her sister, Joann and Jerry Riemann of Dighton, 
Kansas, one daughter, Tracy France of Roeland Park, Kansas, two sons, 
Clint &amp; Amy France of Marienthal, Kansas, and Heath &amp; Tara 
France of Ransom, Kansas, two brothers-in-law, Ron &amp; Carrie France 
of Garden City, Kansas, and Ted France of Scott City, Kansas, two 
nieces, Chanelle &amp; Corey Stephens of Dighton, Kansas and Kim and 
Mark Sorenson of Garden City, Kansas, Six Grandchildren – Caleb &amp;

Vivian A. Appelhans

Helen Mae Devlin was born on April 5, 1935, on the family farm north of 
Red Cloud, Nebraska and passed away on September 1, 2021, at the 
Heritage Nursing Home in Red Cloud. Her parents were Paul and Grace 
(Davis) Jelinek. Helen attended both rural and town schools and 
graduated from Red Cloud High School in 1952. She attended college in 
Kearney for two summers and taught in rural elementary schools in 
Webster County for two years.
 She met the love of her life, William Dale Devlin, in Red Cloud when
 she was 15 and he 17 and they were a couple for the rest of her life. 
While Bill was in the service and later during Bill’s time in Korea 
during the Korean War, she wrote him a letter every day. Following 
Bill’s return, they were married on June 13, 1954, at the Methodist 
Church in Red Cloud. Following marriage, they moved to Omaha, Nebraska 
where Bill continued his service in the Air Force. In 1956, they moved 
to the family farm in Pawnee Township in Smith County, Kansas, where 
they resided for the next 65 years. Two sons were born to this union, 
James and Daniel, and a daughter, Kathleen.
 Helen was a homemaker, a dedicated mother and was a partner with 
Bill on the farm. She enjoyed cooking for her family and having 
everyone to her house for holidays. She had a passion for her dogs and 
cats and for gardening, particularly growing tomatoes and sewing clothes
 for her family. She enjoyed her childrens’ events and loved her 
grandchildren and having them visit the farm. She belonged to the Womer
 Church for many years and attended whenever she could, participated in 
other neighborhood activities and served many years as a community 
leader for the Busy Bears 4-H Club.
 Helen is survived by her husband, Bill, her son James and wife Lynda
 of Smith Center, Kansas, her son, Daniel and wife Marjorie of 
Manhattan, Kansas, her daughter Kathleen Lewis of Hastings, Nebraska, 
grandsons, Rohn Lewis and Allen Devlin and granddaughters, Alisha Young,
 Sarah Brunner, Danielle Mertz, Allison Kohlmeier, Seana Lewis and Rylea
 Lewis and five great- grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister,

Robert L. Waters, age 72, passed away at his home in Scott County, 
Kansas on Tuesday, August 31, 2021.&nbsp; He was born on June 30, 1949, in 
Junction City, Kansas, the son of Lawrence &amp; Mary Weaver Waters.&nbsp; 
After attending Kansas State University and meeting Marilyn S. 
Winderlin, they married in 1969 in Scott City, Kansas.

He began his career at Coleman Industries in Wichita, Kansas, and 
then transferred to Elkhart, Indiana as a warehouse manager.&nbsp; As a 
family, they moved to the family farm in Scott County, Kansas in 1978 
with a small pig he received as a going away gift named Arnold in the 
back of the car to become a hog farmer until 1989 when he started 
working for Schwieterman Inc. in Garden City, Kansas as a broker.

He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Scott City, 
Kansas.&nbsp; Robert enjoyed many hobbies including woodworking, gardening, 
raising chickens, growing flowers from seed and filling his greenhouse, 
and baking bread.

Survivors include his Wife - Marilyn S. Waters of Scott City, Kansas,
 Two Daughters - Julie &amp; Chris Conard of Leoti, Kansas, Cindy &amp; 
Clint Blasi of Wichita, Kansas, Four Grandchildren - Braedyn Blasi of

Karen A. Henneke, 80, passed away August 31, 2021, at KU Medical 
Center, Kansas City, Kan. She was born on May 14, 1941, at Fergus Falls,
 Minn. to Walter D. &amp; Dorothy (Heaton) Bradehoft. She married Wayne 
Henneke on March 13, 1982, at Minneapolis, Minn.

Coming to Great Bend from Minneapolis, Minn. in 1996, Karen was an 
engraver at Awards Incorporated, Minneapolis, retiring in 1996. She was a
 member of the Great Bend Zoological Society and various cat 
associations. Karen was compassionate animal lover.

Survivors include, her husband, Wayne Henneke of the home; and a 
brother, Wayne Bradehoft of Minneapolis, Minn. She was preceded in death
 by her parents; and a brother, Charles Bradehoft.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A graveside
 inurnment will take place at a later date in Oak Grove Cemetery Fergus 
Falls, Minn. Memorials have been designated to the Great Bend Zoological
 Society, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Leon John Hammerschmidt, passed away on his 80th birthday, Tuesday, August 31, 2021, at Red Bud in Plainville, KS.
 From the humblest of beginnings, Leon was born August 31, 1941 in 
rural Victoria, Kansas to Joe and Matilda Hammerschmidt, the 5th of 13 
children. He grew up on a farm in a small, three bedroom farmhouse. He 
attended school and only completed 8th Grade before he went to work in 
the oilfield to help support and provide for his siblings and parents.
 He married Melba Jean Fisher on September 14, 1964 in Zurich, Kansas
 and together they began building their life and family. From this 
union, six children were born - five daughters and one son. 
 “The strength of a man is in his character. A strong man is a great 
man of wisdom, who understands his top priority is to his family.” -

 Leon was a provider for his family. He worked (before) sun up to sun
 down. He learned and loved the oilfield, and all the people who were a 
part of it. Together with his wife, they established Leon’s Drilling 
Service; as well as a partnership with a close friend - C &amp; L Well 
Service, H &amp; H Oil with two of his brothers, and after selling the 
rigs Leon’s Consulting. Over the years, he employed numerous local 
friends and neighbors who were treated more like family. He led by 
example and would never ask anyone to do something that he wasn’t 
already doing himself. Leon officially retired after working for 60 
years in the oilfield.
 His children’s education was important to him. Only formally 
educated until the 8th Grade, it was a priority for him that all 6 of 
his children graduated from college. He even had a “rule” that they 
couldn’t get married until they completed their degree, which they all 
did. He was a generous benefactor to Sacred Heart Grade School and to 
Sacred Heart Church. 
 Above all, he was strong in his faith which led to his life full of 
blessings. Leon was a devoted member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and
 the Knights of Columbus. He gave selflessly and abundantly of his time,
 talent and treasure to his church. He taught his family the importance 
of daily prayer and weekly mass. On weekends, he not only attended every
 Mass, he was there to turn the lights on, open the doors and greet 
everyone. He was the last to leave the church as he wanted to make sure 
all the lights were off. After retirement, he attended all the weekday 
masses and ushered at every funeral. 
 “A Man leaves his mark on the world with the love he gives his Children.”
 Left to cherish his memory are his wife of nearly 58 years, Melba of
 the home; His Children: Marla (Douglas) Jones of Overland Park; Sandra 
(Norman) Keller of Hays; Jamie (Denise) Hammerschmidt of Highlands 
Ranch, CO; Kelli (Christopher) Hansen of Plainville; Amanda (Mitch) Mayo
 of Colorado Springs, CO; Nicole (Tony) Dopita of Hays, KS. His 
Grandchildren: Alex and Trevor Jones; Lauren and London Keller; Jordan 
and Hunter Hammerschmidt; Noah, Benjamin, and Kate Hansen; Zachary and 
Luke Mayo; and Emily and Lawrence Dopita.
 His Brother, William (Cecile) Hammerschmidt, Plainville; Sisters: 
Alice Arnold, Hutchinson, Mary Hammersmith, Hays, Jo Ann Jacobs, 
LaCrosse and Theresa Conboy, Topeka. In Laws: June Mongeau, Plainville;
 Fred and Terry Fisher, Plainville, Connie Fisher, Plainville, Connie 
and Dennis Keller, Zurich; Jean and Don Larsen of Russell, and many 
nieces and nephews. 
 He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Matilda

 Hammerschmidt, Leo Hammerschmidt, Ernest Hammerschmidt, Tom 
Hammerschmidt and Elaine Sunley. 
 A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, September 4, 2021,
 10:30 A.M. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville, Kansas. 
Visitation will be held Friday, September 3, 2021 from 1:00 P.M. until 
3:00 P.M at Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home. Family will receive guests 
beginning at 5:00pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Vigil will begin

 talent and treasure to his church. He taught his family the importance 
of daily prayer and weekly mass. On weekends, he not only attended every
 Mass, he was there to turn the lights on, open the doors and greet 
everyone. He was the last to leave the church as he wanted to make sure 
all the lights were off. After retirement, he attended all the weekday 
masses and ushered at every funeral.

 of Colorado Springs, CO; Nicole (Tony) Dopita of Hays, KS. His 
Grandchildren: Alex and Trevor Jones; Lauren and London Keller; Jordan 
and Hunter Hammerschmidt; Noah, Benjamin, and Kate Hansen; Zachary and 
Luke Mayo; and Emily and Lawrence Dopita.
 His Brother, William (Cecile) Hammerschmidt, Plainville; Sisters: 
Alice Arnold, Hutchinson, Mary Hammersmith, Hays, Jo Ann Jacobs, 
LaCrosse and Theresa Conboy, Topeka. In Laws: June Mongeau, Plainville;
 Fred and Terry Fisher, Plainville, Connie Fisher, Plainville, Connie 
and Dennis Keller, Zurich; Jean and Don Larsen of Russell, and many 
nieces and nephews. 
 He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Matilda 
Hammerschmidt and his siblings, Peter Hammerschmidt, Rose Heidel, Robert
 Hammerschmidt, Leo Hammerschmidt, Ernest Hammerschmidt, Tom 
Hammerschmidt and Elaine Sunley. 
 A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, September 4, 2021,
 10:30 A.M. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville, Kansas. 
Visitation will be held Friday, September 3, 2021 from 1:00 P.M. until 
3:00 P.M at Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home. Family will receive guests 
beginning at 5:00pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Vigil will begin

Leon John Hammerschmidt

Jean Lucille (Kendig) Charles, 105, of Republic, Kan., died Monday, 
March 8, 2021, at Parkview Haven Nursing Home in Deshler, Neb. Jean was 
born January 17, 1916 in Osborne, Kan. She was the first of two children
 born to Alvin and Angie Kendig. She graduated from Osborne High School 
in 1933, and attended Fort Hays State College for two years, earning a 
teaching certificate.

She was teaching kindergarten in Osborne in 1937 when she met Norman 
Shirley, whom she married in 1938. They moved to different states 
several times in several months for his work in the oil industry. Norman
 died in a swimming accident in 1939, and Jean returned to Osborne, 
taking a job at the U.S. Farm Security Administration office there.

Jean met Don Charles as he was passing through Osborne in 1940 and he
 stopped to visit with a mutual friend. Don stayed in Osborne that night
 due to a blizzard, and he and Jean hit it off instantly. They were 
married May 14, 1941, in Manhattan, Kan., where Don had attended school 
at Kansas State University, and Jean moved with Don to Republic, and 
Valley Point Farms, which had been in Don’s family since 1868.

Don and Jean raised three children on the farm, where Jean helped 
instill a love of reading, music, cooking and K-State. They set examples
 as community leaders by, among other things, founding the Republic 
Pioneers 4-H chapter. Jean also regularly entertained friends in her 
bridge club, and they were members of the Elks, as well as the 
Belleville (Kan.) Country Club. Jean returned to teaching elementary 
school after her children were older in community schools in Hardy, 
Republic, Sherdahl, Scandia, and Webber, and former students kept in 
touch with her frequently for years after. Upon retirement, they became 
doting and loving grandparents to five grandchildren, spending time with
 them and helping the children develop a deep appreciation for the farm 
and its history. Don and Jean also spent more than 20 years wintering 
(and golfing), in Texas, then Arizona. They spent more than 60 years 
together before Don’s death in 2002.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Alvin and Angie Kendig, 
her first husband, Norman Shirley, her brother, Warren Kendig, her 
husband, Donald Charles, a son, Michael Charles, a daughter, Nancy 
(Charles) Gabriel, and a grandson, Evan Charles. She is survived by her 
son, John Charles of Republic, Kan., granddaughter Christie (Petersen) 
Kairos (husband Sunny) of Portland, Ore., grandson Dane Petersen (wife 
Jill Nienhiser) of Kansas City, Mo., grandson Hayes Charles (wife Keri) 
of Coon Rapids, Iowa, granddaughter Hayley Charles of Denver, Colo., and
 four great-grandchildren.

Liria Lee (Herman) Adams, 52 of Catharine, Kansas, passed away August 24, 2021, at her home with her family by her side.

Liria was born August 26, 1968, in Russell, Kansas. She was the daughter of Rudolph James and Donna Faye (Lansford) Herman. She grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in the Class of 1986.&nbsp; She later obtained a license for CNA. &nbsp;

Liria was a Certified Nurses Assistant for private home health in the Ft. Worth, Texas, area for the last seven years before moving back to Kansas.&nbsp; She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, fishing, doing crafts, gardening, listening to music and chatting with her friends.

Liria’s surviving family include her three children, Kelby Price of Hays, Kansas, Jerod Price of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Briana Adams of Ft. Worth, Texas; brother, Dody “James” Herman (Misty) of Ft. Worth, Texas; sisters, Tane Height (Mike) of Russell, Kansas and Tammy Dorzsweiler (Dan) of Plainville, Kansas; number of grandchildren.

Liria was preceded in death by her parents and daughter Kiana Adams.

Janet Lucille Augustine, age 84, passed away Monday, August 30, 2021, at Hays Medical Center. She was born November 20, 1936, in Ellis, Kansas, to Adair and Josephine (Lang) Ptaschek. She graduated from Ellis High School in 1954. On October 12, 1954, she married Gilbert Augustine in Ellis at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Janet was a homemaker and farm wife and had also worked at Wiesner's Department Store and at Meal Site. She was a member of Saint Mary's Catholic Church and the Daughters of Isabella both of Ellis. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, needlepoint, reading, and especially baking homemade noodles for family. She is survived by her husband Gilbert of Ellis; three sons, Gregory Augustine and wife Pamela of Ellis, Gordon Augustine and wife Geri of Ellis and Wayne Augustine and wife Lori of Glen Elder, Kansas; four daughters, Elaine Weber of WaKeeney, Kansas, Deborah LaBarge and husband Martin of Ellis, Sandy Waldschmidt and husband Pete of Ellis, and Brenda Hutchison and husband Terry of Hays; two brothers, Jerry Ptaschek and wife Marian of Ellis and Bernie Ptaschek and wife Roberta of Florida; one sister Glenda Merkle of Meade, Kansas; 32 grandchildren and 50 great grandchildren. Robert A. "Bob" Redger passed away on 
August 26, 2021, at KU Med Center at the age of 74.&nbsp; He was born July 3,
 1947, the son of Albert A. and Grace (Kumberg) Redger.&nbsp; He attended 
Ashland Kansas schools graduating in 1965.&nbsp; He attended Southwestern 
College Winfield before enlisting in the U.S. Army and serving in 
Vietnam from 1966-1968 obtaining the rank of SP5 (T). &nbsp;

In 1970 he married Carol Jean Fuller and they adopted a daughter, Crystal. They later divorced.

Robert worked in the oil fields as a 
noxious weed director and a feed store manager before becoming the 
manager of the Golden Belt Co-op in Ellis, in 1991, retired in 2016. 
Robert was involved in his community, serving on several boards.&nbsp; He was
 a member of the Ellis City Counsel, the Chrysler House, and the Chamber
 of Commerce.&nbsp; He was a Quartermaster for the local VFW Post and was the
 treasurer for the Ellis United Methodist Church.

Robert was preceded in death by his 
parents. He is survived by his daughter Crystal, his special friend Niki
 Bartlett, sisters Louise Lagerman (Mel) of Salina, KS; Carol Jackson 
(Mike) of Vega, TX; Diana Redger of Ashland, KS; brother David Redger 
(Linda) of Ashland, KS; Niki’s daughters Jenny, Amy, Lesley, and Betsy; 
as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A celebration of life will be at 11:00 
AM on Saturday, September 25 at 11:00 AM at the Ellis United Methodist 
Church with military honors. Robert chose to be cremated.&nbsp;

Beverly J. (Arwood) Lowen, 83, of Hays,
 Kansas, passed away Tuesday, August 31, 2021, at Hays Med Center after a
 long battle with multiple myeloma.

Beverly was born October 13, 1937, to 
Arnold and Katy (Stephens) Arwood in Hutchinson, Kansas. &nbsp;She married 
the love of her life, Robert Lowen, on October 4, 1953.&nbsp;

They moved to Emporia, KS, in 1961 for 
Robert to attend Emporia State University.&nbsp; They moved to Hays, Kansas, 
in 1965 for Robert’s job at FHSU.

She worked at Farmers State Bank for 
several years, volunteered at the hospital gift shop, worked at FHSU 
during enrollment and for ROTC, and she worked as a receptionist for two
 hair salons.

Beverly was an avid golfer for several 
years, enjoyed playing bridge with Robert and their friends, playing 
Scrabble, doing crossword puzzles, and spending time with family and 
friends. She was a big sports fan for FHSU Tigers, KU Jayhawks, and KC 
Chiefs.

Survivors include her children:&nbsp; Bob 
Lowen Jr (Grace) of Allen, TX; Deanna Aguilar (Carlos) of Ogden, UT; 
Steve Lowen (Shelley) of Corpus Christi, TX; Debra David (Skip) of 
Sharon Springs, KS; Doug Lowen of Hays, KS; and Donna Lowen of 
Huntsville, AL; brothers: Ace Arwood of Enid, OK and Jim Arwood of Enid,
 OK; and her sister Barbara Stoy of Hutchinson, KS;

Survivors also include grandchildren:

A graveside service to celebrate Leroy’s life will be held at 11 A.M.&nbsp; on Wednesday, September 8, 2021, at the Russell City Cemetery in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; Military honors will be presented by the Russell V.F.W. Post 6240.&nbsp;

Karen Ruth (Nanninga) Owings, 80, Hays, died Wednesday, August 25, 2021, at Brookdale Senior Living Center.

She was born September 16, 1940 in 
Axtell, Kansas, the second of eight children of Milton H. and Helen E. 
(Stewart) Nanninga.&nbsp; Karen graduated from Axtell High School and 
attended Emporia State University.&nbsp; She married Jerry Leedy in 1960 and 
they had two daughters, Lori and Lisa.&nbsp; They later divorced.&nbsp; On 
November 10, 1987, she married Norman C. Owings in Russell, and they 
celebrated 33 years of marriage.&nbsp; Karen worked as a legal secretary in 
Hill City and Salina.&nbsp; She was a member of Hays First United Methodist 
Church where she served as a lay speaker, delivering sermons to 
residents in nursing homes, and known as “The Ukulele Lady," played her 
ukulele as she presented the children’s sermon during Sunday worship.&nbsp; 
Little children loved gathering around Karen, and she loved being around
 them.&nbsp; Karen enjoyed writing poetry, playing Bridge, singing, and was a
 chorus director.&nbsp; She and Norman enjoyed their travels together 
throughout all 50 states and on nine cruises.&nbsp; Karen was known to be 
ornery and a friend to everyone, cherishing her lifelong friends.

Survivors include her husband: Norman 
of Hays, two daughters: Lori Paxson of Colby and Lisa Bowers and husband
 Rodger of Lee’s Summit, MO, two stepsons: Dale Owings and wife Kathryn 
of Lawrence and David Owings of Coffeyville, a brother: Terry Nanninga 
and wife Karen of Axtell, a sister: Beth Clowe and husband Chris of 
Trinidad, CO, a brother-in-law: Jerry Hazlett of Topeka, two 
sisters-in-law: Cherie Nanninga of Lenexa and JoAnn Nanninga of 
Maryville, MO, nine grandchildren: Jenny Smith and husband Jarrod, Heath
 Paxson and wife Mandy, Spencer Bowers and wife Hannah, Luke Bowers, 
Paul Owings and wife Cristina, Vanessa Hermesh and husband Jeff, Jeremy 
Owings and wife Charell, Casey Franke and husband Alex, and Kyle Kuypers
 and wife Natalie, and 16 great-grandchildren.

Thelma M. Pfannenstiel, age 83 of Denver, Colorado, died Friday, August 27, 2021, at the Crossroads Senior Living Center in Northglenn, CO.

She was born September 13, 1937, in Schoenchen, Kansas, to Albert and Martina (Ruder) Zimmerman. She married Cyril Pfannenstiel on November 12, 1955.

Along with her husband, Thelma was co-owner/operator of the Adams City A&amp;W and she also owned her own catering business. She later worked at Regis College in Denver managing the priest’s kitchen, and she retired from Hunter Douglas in Broomfield, CO. She was an active member and volunteer at the Thornton Senior Center for several years.

Survivors include her daughter Lisa Kay Pfannenstiel and husband Paul Hamilton of Austin, TX; two sons, Barry Pfannenstiel and wife, Mary Lou of Wisconsin Dells, WI; Bruce Pfannenstiel and wife, Dawn of Pleasant Garden, NC; two grandsons Derek Pfannenstiel of Wisconsin Dells, WI; Clayton Pfannenstiel and wife Dana Montalto of Boston, MA; one granddaughter Ashley (Pfannenstiel) Kern and husband Dan Kern of Star, NC; two great grandsons and two great granddaughters; brothers Ernest Zimmerman and wife, Marlene of Payson, AZ; Tim Zimmerman and wife Lora of Maricopa, AZ; Chuck Zimmerman and wife Tammy of Wichita, KS; sisters Elaine Pfannenstiel and husband Verlin Pfannenstiel of Munjor, KS; Julie Gottschalk and husband Tim Gottschalk of Belleville, KS; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Cyril Pfannenstiel; her son Brian Pfannenstiel; her parents Albert and Martina (Ruder) Zimmerman; stepmother Felicitas (Giebler) Zimmerman, and brother Harvey Zimmerman.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations to the American Cancer Society.
