Ann S. Schremmer, 97, passed away February 8, 2022, at Country Place 
Senior Living, Hoisington, Kansas. She was born on November 27, 1924 in 
rural Odin, Kansas, to Ferdinand &amp; Anna (Kirmer) Zorn. She married 
Anton Schremmer on June 4, 1945 at Odin, Kansas. He died on October 2, 
1990.

Ann was a resident of Beaver and Hoisington, Kansas. She graduated 
from Holy Family School in Odin and worked as a clerk at Duckwalls and 
Banner in Hoisington. Ann was a member of St. John The Evangelist 
Catholic Church of Hoisington and the Altar Society at St. John and St. 
Joseph of Beaver.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry (Sharla) Schremmer and Doug (Kayla)
 Schremmer, both of Hoisington, Kansas; a daughter, Judy (Leon) Oberle 
of Claflin, Kansas; a sister, Helen Holiday of Inman, Kansas; a brother,
 Gerald (Loretta) Zorn of Great Bend, Kansas; nine grandchildren; 
nineteen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and three
 sisters-in-law, Emily, Bernice, and Lea Zorn. She was preceded in death
 by her husband; four sisters, Margaret, Marion, Tillie, and Eleanor; 
and six brothers, Frank, Leonard, Bernard, Alvin, Elmer, and Richard 
Zorn.

Visitation will take place on Friday, February 11, 2022, from 9:00 
a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home and starting at 4:00 
p.m. at St. John The Evangelist Church. A vigil service with rosary will
 be held at 5:00 p.m. at St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church on 
Friday, February 11, 2022. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:30
 p.m., February 12, 2022 at St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church in 
Hoisington, with Father Anselm Eke and Father Bob Schremmer presiding. 
Interment will follow at St. John Catholic Cemetery.

Lydia Jeanette Watkins Bundgard, 39, who passed away on Feb. 7, 2022, in 
Oberlin. KS, was born April 29, 1982, in Minneapolis, MN, the only child 
of Melvin Watkins and Margaret Lee. She was baptized at St. David's 
Episcopal Church by Fr. Ronald Bauer in Minnetonka Mills, MN and 
received her 1st Communion at Incarnation Catholic Church in 
Minneapolis. 

A 2000 graduate of South High in Minneapolis, she attended 
Minneapolis Community and Technical College while working at Bachman's 
Garden Center. In 2008, before applying to the International Culinary 
Institute in Minneapolis, she married Master Sgt/E7 Jeremy Bundgard, Air
 National Guard, stationed at Ft. Snelling, Minneapolis. Three children 
were born to them: Henry, now age 13, Jacob, age 8 and Olivia age 6. 
Lydia was a homemaker who enjoyed live popular music concerts and the 
culinary arts. She and her family were members of the Minnesota Zoo 
where they enjoyed frequent outings. A former Girl Scout and organ 
donor, she will be missed for her sparky sense of humor, her intellect, 
and the warmth and love she shared with family and friends.
 She was preceded in death by grandparents Henry and Jeanette Clayton
 Brown of Minneapolis. She is survived by her parents, Melvin and 
Margaret (Lee) Watkins and half-sister, Shantina (Watkins) Allen 
Benjamin; husband Jeremy Bundgard and 3 children; maternal aunt Ann 
Brown and husband Stephen Hollick; cousin Joan Hollick; and best friend 
Emmy TeGantvoort, all of Minneapolis. 
 A Memorial Service in Oberlin will be held at 2 pm, Friday the 11th

Isabell F. “Issie” Bonebrake, 94, died Friday, February 4, 2022, at her 
home in Garden City, Kansas. She was born February 14, 1927, in Garden 
City, Kansas the eighth child of Frank Fredrick &amp; Matilda (Kunz) 
Schmale. 
 Issie grew up in Garden City where she attended Garden City schools
 and graduated from Garden City High School in 1945. On March 30, 1947,
 she married Carl Bonebrake in Garden City, Kansas. They lived in 
Elgin, Illinois, from 1948 to 1949. They moved to Colby, Kansas, for a 
couple of years before moving to Dighton, Kansas, in 1951. After 10 
years in Dighton, they moved to Garden City in 1961 where they have 
lived since. Isabell was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in 
Garden City where she sang for years in the choir. She was a charter 
member of the Sweet Adeline’s where she and her sister-in-law sang in 
the quartet the Highs and Lows. Isabell and Carl were also charter 
members of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Dighton. 
 Isabell was an excellent seamstress and custom make drapery for 38 
years for sister Pia’s interior design business. The altar clothes were
 some of her hand work. Isabell was also a huge help to her sister 
Dorothy when she needed assistance at her restaurant the Luau Inn. 
 Survivors include a son Dr. Alan Bonebrake and wife Donna of 
Dallas, Texas; a daughter Karen and husband Dr. Dee Rupp of Garden City,
 Kansas; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law 
Marilyn Schmale of Garden City. Isabell is preceded In death by her 
husband Carl who died on February 28, 2016. She is also preceded in 
death by her parents; 6 sisters Helen Schmale, Roberta Schmale, Lydia 
Schmale, Edna Lanam, Ruth “Pia” Maupin, &amp; Dorothy Schmale; 2 
brothers Albert Schmale and Frank Schmale; and a grandson Jordan Daniel.

Mark Dwayne Stegman, age 61, of Great Bend, Kansas died on January 31, 2022,&nbsp;at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. Mark was born on May 15, 1960, in Hays, Kansas, to Felix and Elsie (Jacobs) Stegman. He attended Washington Grade School, Kennedy Middle School, Thomas More Prep High School (1978) and NCK Technical College, earning his degree in Restaurant Management.&nbsp; Mark worked his entire career in the restaurant/food industry and enjoyed his many friendships shared with those he worked with. He was a very family-oriented person who held a deep love and pride for his large family. Leo Arlan Sample, 80, passed away on February 5, 2022, in Hoxie, Ks. He was born April 9, 1941, to Benjamin Leslie Sample and Dorothy (Epler) Sample. Leo was raised along with his four siblings in the Tasco and Studley areas of Sheridan County. Leo graduated from Sheridan Community High School in 1958. He was in the Army July 1961 through April 1963. 
 Leo married Eileen Dicks at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hoxie, Ks on September 12, 1964. They had two daughters, Debra and Dianne. Leo worked for the Sheridan County Road Department, Hoxie Redi Mix,
 and Hoxie Grade School as well as some farming. Leo will forever be remembered for his hard work and love for his granddaughters, Jenna and Kayla. His crossword puzzle and mental math skills were admired, and his family will always remember the good times playing cards and marbles.
 Leo was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Lyle Sample and Leon Sample, and sister Doris Jean Rachau.
 Leo is survived by wife Eileen Sample; daughters: Deb Micek (Tim) and Dianne Wyrick (Mike). grandchildren: Jenna Wyrick (Tyler Samuelson) and Kayla Wyrick; sister: Donna McClain; sister-in-law Barb Sample; numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of friends and relatives.

Leo Arlan Sample

Minnie L. Bisbee, 98, was a longtime Great Bend resident having 
recently moved to Park West Plaza, Wichita, Kansas, where she passed 
away on February 2, 2022. She was born on December 29, 1923, at Bixby, 
Oklahoma, to W.F. &amp; Neddie (Parker) James. Minnie married Walter 
"Jim" James Bisbee December 6, 1941 at Mena, Arkansas.&nbsp; He died July 2, 
2004.

Minnie retired from Dillon’s Bakery but never retired from baking 
delicious rolls, desserts, and candies for her family and friends. In 
her spare time, she enjoyed doing arts and crafts which included 
woodworking, crocheting, and quilting. Minnie was an exceptional 
seamstress and excelled in creating her own patterns. She made numerous 
prom gowns from pictures in magazines.

She is survived by daughter, Karen Webb of McMinnville, Tennessee; 
granddaughter, Cindy Freeman, and daughter-in-law Linda Bisbee, both of 
Wichita; sister-in-law, Katherine Bisbee of Mena, Arkansas; and several 
nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter 
“Jim”; her son, Jim; a son-in-law, Al Webb; her parents; and all eight 
of her siblings.

Visitation will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Thursday, 
February 17, 2022, with a private family visitation 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 
p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 10:00

Mary Kathleen "Kathy" McCammond, 75, passed away on February 6, 2022,&nbsp; at the Downs Care and Rehabilitation Center in Downs, Kansas.&nbsp; She was 
born on June 12, 1946, in La Crosse, Kansas, the daughter of Joseph and 
Martina (Rohr) Munsch.

Kathy worked as a CNA at the Ness County Hospital and Long-Term Care 
for over 40 years retiring in 2012. She worked her whole life taking 
care of other people and spreading love and joy to those around her. She
 found joy in making others smile and laugh by dressing up as Elvis, 
Santa Claus, and singing to the patients she cared for. She truly loved 
everyone she met and never knew a stranger. She was member of Sacred 
Heart Church and volunteered within the community, American Legion 
Auxiliary, and Sacred Heart School.

Survivors include 2 sons, Eric (Jenny Fox) McCammond of Las Vegas, 
NV, Mark McCammond of Hutchinson; 3 daughters, Lisa Ward of Edmond, OK, 
Michelle Koehler of Concordia, KS, Jennifer (Joshua) Bowles of Downs, 
KS; 2 brothers, Stanley (Bernus) Munsch of Hays, Ken (Dolly) Munsch of 
Loveland, CO; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was 
preceded in death by her parents and 2 sisters, Terri Dann and Lisa 
Holmes.

Parish Vigil will be held at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City on 
Friday, February 11, 2022, at 6:30 P.M. Funeral service will be on 
Saturday, February 12, 2022, 10:30 A.M., at the Sacred Heart Church, 
Ness City followed by burial in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Viewing will 
be at the funeral home on Friday from noon until service time and at the
 church from 9:30 A.M. until service time.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Sacred Heart School.

Goodland, KS resident and former Oakley, KS resident Leanna VanDonge,
 64, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, February 7, 2022, at the 
Goodland Regional Medical Center in Goodland.

Leanna was born on November 3, 1957, in Quinter, KS to Leonard and 
Pauline (Heinrich) Ribordy.&nbsp; She was one of six children.&nbsp; She attended 
school in Oakley, and graduated from Oakley High School in 1975.&nbsp; She 
later attended Northwest Kansas Technical College for a short time.

Leanna’s greatest joy was spending time with her family and grandchildren, and going to watch them play sports.

Preceding her in death were her parents and one sister Sheila Ribordy.

She is survived by her daughters Emily Tinkler (Butch Smith) of 
Goodland, KS and Tracy Braun of Hays, KS. She is also survived by one 
brother Keith (Michele) Ribordy of Oakley, KS; four sisters, Loretta 
(Fred) Teeter of Oakley, KS, Connie (Kim) Jonely of West Jordan, UT, 
Donita (Everett) Harper of Lenexa, KS and Kristy (Glenn) Sears of 
Howells, NE; five grandchildren, Dru Keen, Ellie Keen, Jace Keen, Colton
 Braun and Weston Braun.

Her wish was to be cremated, and no services to be held at this time.

Leanna (Ribordy) VanDonge

Berna Lee (Finan) Leibbrandt, 88, of Atwood, KS died Monday, February 7th, 2022, at Prairie Senior Living Center, Colby, KS. 
Berna Lee was born November 14th, 1933, in Blaine, KS, the daughter of Patrick Francis and Bridget (Minihan) Finan. 
She graduated from Blaine Rural High School in 1951. Later in 1954, she 
graduated from Marymount College, Salina, KS with a Registered Nurse 
(RN) degree. 
On August 7th, 1955, Berna married Charles Wesley Leibbrandt at St. 
Columbkille’s church in Blaine, KS. He preceded her in death on January 
21st, 2004. 
Berna loved being a mother and wife. She raised her children with love 
and devotion. As a dedicated mother and homemaker her children and 
grandchildren were her first priority in life. She enjoyed taking care 
of her home, cooking meals for her family, and baking. Berna’s 
professional career as a registered nurse allowed her to serve the 
communities of Atwood and Colby, KS and make many friends along the way. 
She is preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and her brothers, Michael Finan and Thomas Finan. 
Berna Lee is survived by her children, Charles Douglas Leibbrandt 
(Lorri) of Prairie Village, KS; Bregette Lee Ginther (Dale Myers) of 
Colorado Springs, CO; Gina Marie Chvatal of Atwood, KS; Deborah Kay 
Leibbrandt of El Dorado Springs, MO; Kimberly Ann Zollinger of Las

Virginia Sarah Hanchett, retired business teacher and longtime resident 
of Hill City, Kansas, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2022, at the
 age of 94, at Graham County Hospital. 
 Virginia was proceeded in death by her parents, sister Verda M. 
McKain, and brothers Robert L. D. Hanchett, Ronald L. Hanchett, Donald 
H. Hanchett, Daniel L. Hanchett, Earl E. Hanchett, and Herbert C. 
Hanchett, Jr. She is survived by a multitude of nieces, nephews, great 
nieces, great nephews, and a few great greats.
 Virginia was born on September 19, 1927, in Grandmother Goodall’s 
home southwest of Delphos, Kansas. She was the oldest sibling of 8 
children born to Velma (Goodall) and Herbert Clifford Hanchett Sr. 
Virginia graduated from Delphos High School in 1945. From there, she went
 on to obtain her Bachelor of Arts degree from Kansas Wesleyan 
University in 1949 and Master of Business Administration degree from 
University of Denver in 1962. Virginia enjoyed attending workshops and 
seminars with authors of the textbooks she was using while teaching 
classes.
 Virginia taught business education subjects for 42 combined years at
 Lenora High School, Hill City High School, Belleville High School, 
Wilson High School, and Highland High School. She also worked at Graham 
County Medical Clinic for 3½ years doing Payroll and Accounts Payable. 
Following that she continued on with the clinic part time working with 
inactive obsolete records.
 Virginia joined the Delphos Methodist Church in April 1945. She 
dedicated her life to serving Christ during evangelistic services at 
Kansas Wesleyan University. She was a member of the Hill City United 
Methodist Women where she served as President for 10 years; served on 
the Hays District UMW as Secretary, Communications Coordinator, 
Committee on Nominations, and Education and Interpretations Coordinator;
 and served on the Kansas West Conference UMW on the Committee on 
Nominations.
 Virginia was a National Education Association Life Member; National 
Business Education Association Member (over 50 years); Kansas Business 
Education Association Member (over 50 years); University of Denver 
Alumni Life Member; Kansas Wesleyan University Alumni Association 
Member; and Delta Kappa Gamma Member where she also served as secretary 
of Beta Phi Chapter for several years. In 1979, Virginia was inducted 
into the Kansas Teachers’ Hall of Fame.
 Virginia’s greatest joys included learning of the accomplishments of
 former students and of her many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great
 nephews. She said, “I appreciate being invited to programs, weddings 
and showers of former students and relatives. The help and concern of my
 church family, neighbors, and friends has made my life in Hill City 
especially meaningful.”

Leo Sample

Shirley Mae Davis was born December 1, 1925, in Nepeuskun, Wisconsin. 
She was the first of eleven children born to Enda (Kroll) Davis and 
Percy Davis. Shirley died February 9, 2022, at the age of 96 at sun 
Porch in Smith Center, Kansas surrounded by her family.
 With encouragement from the sister of Vern Shanley, Shirley wrote to
 Vern during WWII. They met after his tour of duty and married on 
September 30, 1944. In the early 1950s, Vern and Shirley moved back to 
his home state of Kansas. While raising their seven children, she was 
known for her excellent cooking and beautiful seamstress work.
 In 1969, Shirley went to work for Doris Beam at Simmons Flowers just 
behind the Simmons Mortuary. She later purchased the shop and moved it 
to Main Street. In retirement Shirley and Vern enjoyed gardening and 
tending to their beloved dog Zoe.
 Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, Edna and Percy Davis: 
her husband Vern Shanley; son Merlin Shanley; daughter in law, Terry 
McDowell Shanley; granddaughter Melissa Shanley Bender; siblings Warren,
 Everett, Marvin and Loretta; 3 great grandchildren and 1 great great 
grandchild. 
 Shirley is survived by her children Maurice (Pat) Shanley of Omaha, 
NE.; Melvin Shanley of San Antonio, TX.; Londa (Bill) Ryman of Liberty,

Shirley Mae Shanley

Linda June Beyer, 73, passed away February 6, 2022, at Wesley Towers 
Thorne Center, Hutchinson.&nbsp; She was born June 26, 1948, in Great Bend, 
KS, to Alvin and Irene (Gliessner) Holopirek.

Linda was a 1966 graduate of Otis Bison High School, Otis, KS, and a 
1968 graduate of Salt City Business College, Hutchinson. She was 
employed as a receptionist at the State of Kansas Unemployment Division 
for over 30 years. Linda was active for many years, serving in various 
roles in Beta Sigma Phi. and a member of Church of the Holy Cross, 
Hutchinson.

Linda was an extremely active member of the V.F.W. Bob Campbell Post 
#1361 Ladies Auxiliary of Hutchinson, for 31 years, serving as district 
and local board member positions. You would often find Linda decorating 
the Post for every holiday, organizing party events and making sure the 
Post was in order.

Linda loved to go antiquing with her daughters, visiting with 
friends, adored playing and caring for her cats, gardening, and most 
importantly, loved the time she shared with her four grandchildren.

On August 1, 1970, she married James Albert Beyer in Timken, KS.&nbsp; They shared over 51 years of marriage.

Linda is survived by:&nbsp; her husband, James Beyer of Hutchinson; 
daughters, Leslie (Jordan) Hind of Gardner, KS, and Patty (Brian) Teufel
 of Goddard, KS; granddaughters, Katy Teufel, Ali Teufel, Juneau Hind, 
and River Hind; and brother, Perry (Karla) Holopirek of Great Bend, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Terry Holopirek.

Memorial liturgy will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 18, 2022, at 
Elliott Mortuary, with Father Aaron Spexarth officiating.&nbsp; Celebration 
of Life gathering will follow the service at the V.F.W., 328 N. Van 
Buren Street, Hutchinson. A private family burial will be held in the 
Holy Cross Cemetery, Timken, KS. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. 
to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday at Elliott Mortuary. To view the

KS, to Alvin and Irene (Gliessner) Holopirek.Linda was a 1966 graduate of Otis Bison High School, Otis, KS, and a 
1968 graduate of Salt City Business College, Hutchinson. She was 
employed as a receptionist at the State of Kansas Unemployment Division 
for over 30 years. Linda was active for many years, serving in various 
roles in Beta Sigma Phi. and a member of Church of the Holy Cross, 
Hutchinson.Linda was an extremely active member of the V.F.W. Bob Campbell Post 
#1361 Ladies Auxiliary of Hutchinson, for 31 years, serving as district 
and local board member positions. You would often find Linda decorating 
the Post for every holiday, organizing party events and making sure the 
Post was in order.Linda loved to go antiquing with her daughters, visiting with 
friends, adored playing and caring for her cats, gardening, and most 
importantly, loved the time she shared with her four grandchildren.On August 1, 1970, she married James Albert Beyer in Timken, KS.&nbsp; They shared over 51 years of marriage.Linda is survived by:&nbsp; her husband, James Beyer of Hutchinson; 
daughters, Leslie (Jordan) Hind of Gardner, KS, and Patty (Brian) Teufel
 of Goddard, KS; granddaughters, Katy Teufel, Ali Teufel, Juneau Hind,

Linda June Beyer

Louise Halfman, 103, of Tulsa, and a former Parsons resident passed away
 at 12:31 a.m., Friday February 4, 2022, at her home in Tulsa.
 She was born on March 13, 1918, at Ellis, Kansas, to Louise and 
Stephanie (Schuster) Locker. Louise grew up at Eilis and attended Ellis 
schools graduating from Ellis High School. She then attended Fort Hays 
State University where she received a Bachelor of Art in Education.
 She and Roy Halfman were married. He preceded her in death on November 15, 1961.
 They lived in Rexford, KS where she taught school and Roy was a 
principal. They then moved to Parsons where she taught school at Eire 
and Galesburg until her retirement. She and Roy also owned and operated 
Superior School Supply. They later sold the business.
 Following her retirement, she enjoyed visiting with family back in 
Ellis and taking many trips with friends. Louise was beloved by the 
many students she taught over the years. She received letters and cards
 from them up until her passing. Louise was baptized into the Catholic 
faith.
 She is survived by her sister, Francis Butler of Escondido, CA; 
several nieces and nephews; several great, great-great, and 
great-great-great nieces and nephews; and a cousin, Lawrence Locker of 
Kansas City, KS.
 In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Arthur Locker, and her sister, Blanche Erbert.
 A private burial will be held at a later date in the St. Mary’s 
Cemetery at Ellis. Memorials are suggested to the Catholic Charities of

Louise Halfman

Cynthia Gay (McDonald) Goracke, age 52 of Basin, Wyoming was born on 
December 28, 1969, to Edward Orval and Zelma Ellen (Rhodes) McDonald in 
Marysville, California. She passed away unexpectedly at her home on 
February 3, 2022.
 Cynthia was a student at Marysville High School, later obtaining her
 Associates Degree in Nursing from Butte College in 2004. She finished 
her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from the University of 
Missouri.
 Cynthia's passion for helping others led her to become a nurse. She
 loved connecting with her patients and hearing their stories. Cynthia 
was a traveling nurse for many years, which allowed her to fulfil her 
passion for travel. She finally obtained her dream home with a cabin 
and acreage for her beloved animals and was working from home for 
Ensemble Health Partners at the time of her death.
 Cynthia had many passions. She was known for her elaborate rock 
garden she created with Tom at their home. She loved the state of 
Wyoming and always admired the beautiful sunsets. She loved all 
animals, feeding the wild birds, and taming the squirrel who lived in 
the tree in their yard. She loved the warm sunshine, beautiful flowers,
 gardening, beautiful clouds, hiking, camping, cooking, hunting for 
rocks and elk sheds along with fishing and elk hunting. She had a 
passion for searching for teepee rings and artifacts. Each day was full
 of life and adventure for Cynthia. She found sunshine on the cloudiest
 of days.
 She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Vernon McDonald and her beloved dogs, Biscotti and Atticus.
 Cynthia is survived by her loving husband, Tom Goracke, of Basin, 
Wyoming; daughter, Erin Honeywell and her unborn granddaughter of 
Vernon, Connecticut; son Brendon Randolph of Decatur, Tennessee; 
grandchildren Lucy and Evie and Michael Morris all of Kansas. She is 
also survived by Tom's daughter, Ashley Goracke and grandson Kholter 
Goracke of Gillette, Wyoming. Survivors also include her siblings, 
Edward (Sherry) McDonald of Marysville, California, Liz (Dave) Baggett 
of Yuba City, California and Margaret (Terry) Burr of Lovell, Wyoming 
and numerous nieces and nephews. 
 Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 12, 
2022 at the Ten Sleep Mountain View Assembly of God Church with Pastor 
Brandon Weddle officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be at
 the church one hour prior to services. Cremation will take place 
following the services and an inurnment will be held at the Ten Sleep

Cynthia Gay (McDonald) Goracke

Jimmy “Jim” Lee Allen passed away at his home in Dodge City on 
February 7, 2022. He was born December 26, 1928 the son of Sam Allen and
 Lorean Holcomb.&nbsp;

Jimmy grew up in Manhattan and Dodge City. He attended Dodge City 
High School, graduating in 1946. He married Virginia Wynona Shute, on 
February 12, 1948 and they resided in Dodge City, where Jim worked with 
his dad in the shoe and boot repair and sales business. He later became a
 co-owner of Sams Shoe Store until December 31, 2013 when he retired.

Jimmy was an avid KU, Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs fan. 
He was also an avid bowler and loved to watch his children and 
grandchildren play sports. Jimmy had a contagious smile and&nbsp;was a 
gentle,&nbsp;loving and kind hearted&nbsp;man&nbsp;to everyone he met.

Jim is survived &nbsp;by his loving wife Wynona;&nbsp;four sons, Ted Allen,

 be with the Lord early Sunday, November 7, 2021.&nbsp; She was born February
 21, 1950, to Benjamin and Mamie (Light) Barnes in Goodland.&nbsp; Virginia 
was raised on a farm in Northwest Kansas, she enjoyed reading, word 
puzzles, watching tv and coloring art which she shared with everyone.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Mamie; brothers, 
James Doyle, Russell Keith and Benjamin Leslie Barnes; and sister, 
Ardith Chadwick.

She is survived by her children, Billy Joe and Ashley; sisters, 
Eloise Johnston of Surprise, AZ and Peggy Welsh of Sun City, AZ; and

Virginia Lea (Barnes) Pebley

Michael D. “Mike” Basgall, 70, La Crosse, Kansas, passed away Sunday,
 February 6, 2022, at The University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas 
City, Kansas.

Mike was born September 29, 1951, in La Crosse Kansas, to Isadore and
 Josephine (Rebel) Basgall. Mike attended La Crosse High School, La 
Crosse, Kansas, and was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas.

Mike met the love of his life Sue and was lucky enough to marry her 
on June 12, 1971. Their adventure began with a mutual love of camping, 
boating, motorcycles, road trips and each other’s company. Mike enjoyed 
live music and even played in a band during those early years. They 
started their family with the birth of their first child, Aaron, in 1978
 and with the arrival of their second son, Christopher, in 1981, their 
family was complete. Aaron and Chris gave Mike a run for his money but 
he understood every investment came with risk and took time to build.

Mike worked hard for his family every day. He worked 41 years at the 
Otis Helium Plant, Otis, Kansas. After retirement he became a nationwide
 consultant for Cryo Technologies.

The fruits of his labor and big payout came later with his five 
grandchildren. They were the absolute light of his life and his heart 
beamed with pride. If you ever wonder what love looks like, it was 
Mike’s big smile every time he saw or talked about his grandkids. 
Michael left us far too soon. He used the last of his strength and his 
last natural breathe to call out by name each of his grandkids. With 
that Mike left us all with enough courage and love to last a lifetime 
and we will forever be lucky enough to have loved Mike.&nbsp;

Mike lived strong in his faith and was a member of St. Joseph’s 
Catholic Church in Liebenthal, Kansas. He was a third-degree knight in 
the Knights of&nbsp;Columbus St. Anthony Council 4166, Schoenchen, Kansas. He
 was a member of the Harley Owners Group.&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife, Sue Basgall, La Crosse, Kansas; sons, 
Aaron Basgall (Mary), Hutchinson, Kansas, and Christopher Basgall 
(Tara), Hays, Kansas; grandchildren, Tyra, Trinity, David (Natalie), 
Brooklyn, and Isabella; great grandchildren, Landon, and Luca; brothers,
 Dwain Basgall, and Gary Rebel (Susan); and&nbsp; many nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

He is preceded in death by his parents; sister-in-law, Ruby Rebel; and nephew, Gary Rebel.&nbsp;

Visitation will be Friday, February 11, 2022, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 
P.M. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Liebenthal, Kansas, with the 
family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.&nbsp; A vigil service 
and rosary will be at 7:00 P.M.&nbsp;

he understood every investment came with risk and took time to build.Mike worked hard for his family every day. He worked 41 years at the 
Otis Helium Plant, Otis, Kansas. After retirement he became a nationwide
 consultant for Cryo Technologies.The fruits of his labor and big payout came later with his five 
grandchildren. They were the absolute light of his life and his heart 
beamed with pride. If you ever wonder what love looks like, it was 
Mike’s big smile every time he saw or talked about his grandkids. 
Michael left us far too soon. He used the last of his strength and his 
last natural breathe to call out by name each of his grandkids. With 
that Mike left us all with enough courage and love to last a lifetime 
and we will forever be lucky enough to have loved Mike.&nbsp;Mike lived strong in his faith and was a member of St. Joseph’s 
Catholic Church in Liebenthal, Kansas. He was a third-degree knight in 
the Knights of&nbsp;Columbus St. Anthony Council 4166, Schoenchen, Kansas. He
 was a member of the Harley Owners Group.&nbsp;He is survived by his wife, Sue Basgall, La Crosse, Kansas; sons, 
Aaron Basgall (Mary), Hutchinson, Kansas, and Christopher Basgall 
(Tara), Hays, Kansas; grandchildren, Tyra, Trinity, David (Natalie), 
Brooklyn, and Isabella; great grandchildren, Landon, and Luca; brothers,
 Dwain Basgall, and Gary Rebel (Susan); and&nbsp; many nieces and nephews.&nbsp;He is preceded in death by his parents; sister-in-law, Ruby Rebel; and nephew, Gary Rebel.&nbsp;Visitation will be Friday, February 11, 2022, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00

Tammy was born on May 29, 1963, in Russell, Kansas, the daughter of&nbsp;Kenneth Mitchell and Billie Jean (Zimmerman) Beck. &nbsp;She&nbsp;grew up in&nbsp;Ellsworth&nbsp;and graduated from&nbsp;Ellsworth&nbsp;High School. &nbsp;She&nbsp;graduated from Brown Mackie College in 1983. &nbsp;She was united in marriage to Ray Morris on October 25, 2021, in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp;She formerly worked as a certified nurses assistant at Wheatland Nursing Home&nbsp;in Russell.&nbsp;She&nbsp;currently&nbsp;was owner and operator of Bonus Full Services. &nbsp;She was a longtime member of the Second Baptist Church in Russell. &nbsp;She enjoyed shopping, decorating, painting&nbsp;and caring for her family and friends. &nbsp;Most of all she loved God and loved going to church&nbsp;and spend time with her family. &nbsp;

Surviving family include her husband Ray Morris of the&nbsp;home, daughters Acasia Smith of Great Bend, Kansas, Ashadia Harris, Anajia Harris, Amirriah Harris-Morris, Ajadia Morris&nbsp;and son Ray Morris, Jr. all of Russell, Kansas; brother Joel Cleavenger and wife Marcia of Salina, Kansas and&nbsp;step-brother Les Javens of Russell. &nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Janet Daniels and infant brother Evan James Mitchell.

Cremation has been selected by the family and a memorial funeral service to celebrate Tammy’s life will be held at 12 P.M. on Saturday, February 12, 2022, at the 2nd Baptist Church in Russell.  Family will greet guests the day of the service at the church.  Memorials may be given to the Tammy Harris Morris Memorial Fund and sent in care of the mortuary. Daniel Lee Simpson, 90, passed away December 14, 2021, at 
Medicalodges of Great Bend, Kansas. He was born on August 7, 1931, at 
Kansas City, Kansas, to Ralph &amp; Louise (Balzer) Simpson. He married 
Mary Anne Bender in 1951, and she passed away in 1984. He then married 
Charlotte Howlier on October 13, 1985, in Hoisington, Kansas.

A Hoisington resident, Daniel spent 34 years in law enforcement for 
the Barton County Sheriff's Office as a deputy and undersheriff. He was 
also the Chief of Police in Hoisington and Wellsville. He was a member 
of Concordia Lutheran Church in Hoisington.

Survivors include his wife Charlotte Howlier-Simpson of the home; a 
son, Daniel Simpson and wife Debbie of Kerrville, Texas; two sisters, 
Peggy Snell of Leawood, Kansas, and Dotty Nicely of Overland Park, 
Kansas; six grandchildren, Brandon (Renee) Sigg, Wendy (Michael) Holton,
 Matthew Simpson, Gary (Emily) Simpson, Cory (Jennifer) Simpson, and 
Christopher Draffkorn; numerous great grandchildren and great great 
grandchildren; and his beloved dog, Mercedes. He was preceded in death 
by his first wife, Mary Anne Simpson; his parents; a daughter, Mary 
Sigg; and his brother, Bob Simpson.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Services 
will be held at a later date in Texas. Memorials are designated to 
Kansas Sheriff’s Association, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

2022, at her home.&nbsp; She was born on April 6, 1928, at Charles City, 
Iowa, to Harold and Irene (McCluskey) Kress.

Jackie moved to Hoisington from Hastings, Minnisota in 1990. She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Danny Flugge.

Survivors include; her brother, Arthur Kress and wife Donna of El 
Mirage, Arizona; sons, Rodney Knoblich and wife Julie, and Lance 
Pritchard of Hoisington; foster sons, Kyle and Dean Anderson of Cottage 
Grove, Minnisota; and Brian Anderson and wife Debbie of St. Paul 
Park, Minnisota; two grandchildren, Brian Knoblich and wife Edna of 
Dandridge, Tennesee, and Caryn Kaiser of Salina; and five great 
grandchildren, Donovan, Libby, MacKenzie, Gunnar, and Liam.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a volunteer
 for RSVP and Hospice.&nbsp; She took care of the elderly for Eldercare and 
Senior Companion.

Her body as been bequeathed to the University of Kansas School of 
Medicine, and she has requested there be no memorial services but just 
remember her in your hearts.&nbsp;

Mavis Jane Holland, age 81, passed away on Sunday, February 6, 2022, 
at her home in Scott County, Kansas. She was born on September 10, 1940,
 in Leachville, Arkanas, the daughter of Murel and Melisie Keltner Cox. 
Mavis had been a resident of Scott County since 2000 moving from Ballard
 County in Western Kentucky. She was a dietician.

Mavis was a member of the First Baptist Church of Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include her daughter, Alonna Mantzke &amp; Juan Carrera of 
Scott City, Kansas, her grandson, Steven &amp; Renee Howell of Scott 
City, Kansas, her granddaughter, Mellissa Powell of Scott City, Kansas, 
her great-grandson, Baylyn &amp; Kassandra Mantzke of Leoti, Kansas, her
 sister Sylvia Pullman of Arizona, 11 grandchildren and 16 
great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sons, Willard Crabtree Jr., and Murel Crabtree.

Mavis Jane Holland

Gaylene Holden McDowell went home to be with Jesus on January 14, 2022, 
at the age of 80. Gaylene was born October 3, 1941, at the hospital in 
Smith Center, Kansas, to George H. Howard and Leola (Oberdorf) Howard. 
Gaylene attended the Smith Center schools and, upon graduation, attended
 Fort Hays State University where she attained her Master's of Nursing 
Science degree with a 4.0 GPA and worked as an RN until her retirement. 
 Upon graduation in 1963, she married Jerold "Sam" McDowell on June 1, 
1963, and began her long career in nursing. 
 In her free time, she watched Sam set collegiate records on the 
hardwood. She then worked in the Manhattan, Kansas, hospital while Sam 
attended veterinary school. In Manhattan, her daughter Sandra Renee' 
Henderson was born in 1966. In June of 1968, she moved with her family 
to their new home, a ranch in rural Lebanon, Kansas, when her son 
Shannon McDowell was born, and where she lived the remainder of her 
life. Gaylene was active in the Thornburg Church, attended numerous 
Bible studies, supported missionaries around the globe and shared her 
faith and love with all those she encountered. The joys of her life 
were her husband, her children, her grandchildren and, recently, her 
three great-grandchildren, Charlie, Zeke and Kai. She visited her 
grandchildren Joshua McDowell, Jacob Henderson, Rachael Dozier, Rebecca 
Timmons, and Lydia McDowell every opportunity she had and their mere 
presence brought a smile to her face and heart every time. Due to 
distance, she was not able to visit her great-grandchildren as often as 
she would have liked but enjoyed facetiming with them every chance she 
had. 
 Gaylene prayed daily for each of her family and spoke of them to all
 who would listen. In her free time, she was an avid volunteer with her
 church and local library, and was an avid card player and book reader. 
 Gaylene was a frequent guest of her son's along with his wife, Lori, 
and her mother, Karen Griffith, where many a heated game of cards or 
dominoes took place. She had many friends and made new friends daily. 
Gaylene never met a stranger and tried to help and encourage all those 
she met. 
 She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Leola (Oberdorf) Howard, and her son-in-law, Randy Henderson.

Wesley Rollins Higby was born December 16, 1941, in Wichita, KS to James
 &amp; Grace (Bachelder) Higby and passed away on January 23, 2022, in 
Smith Center, KS. 
 Wes graduated in 1959 out of Smith Center, KS. After graduation 
Wesley went to help his grandparents in TX. He joined the National 
Guards in 1963 and served until 1966. Wesley married Patricia Crawford 
August 13, 1964. Wesley also helped with the service station at Olson's 
in Red Cloud, NE and ran the Phillips 66 in Smith Center. Patricia Higby
 passed away on January 15, 1977. Wesley married Freda Trimmer on May 
26, 1978, they later divorced. Wesley than met Dianne McPherson in 1991 
and they relocated to Pawnee Rock for a job. They moved back to Lebanon,
 KS in 1993 to help his parents on the farm. Wesley and Dianne married 
on May 23, 1993. 
 Wesley is survived by his wife Dianne of the home; son Jeff Higby of
 WV; daughter Teresa Mohler and partner Joel White of Lebanon; daughter 
Tina Jones of Red Cloud, NE; daughter Michelle and Brad Von Feldt of 
Great Bend, KS; stepson James &amp; Shelly Corp of Alta Vista, KS; step 
daughter Toni Barker of Wichita, KS; son Curtis &amp; Virgine Higby of 
Rexford, KS; daughter Nellie Cloke and partner Isaac Salazar of 
Hutchinson, KS; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren,

26, 1978, they later divorced. Wesley than met Dianne McPherson in 1991 
and they relocated to Pawnee Rock for a job. They moved back to Lebanon,
 KS in 1993 to help his parents on the farm. Wesley and Dianne married 
on May 23, 1993. 
 Wesley is survived by his wife Dianne of the home; son Jeff Higby of
 WV; daughter Teresa Mohler and partner Joel White of Lebanon; daughter 
Tina Jones of Red Cloud, NE; daughter Michelle and Brad Von Feldt of 
Great Bend, KS; stepson James &amp; Shelly Corp of Alta Vista, KS; step 
daughter Toni Barker of Wichita, KS; son Curtis &amp; Virgine Higby of 
Rexford, KS; daughter Nellie Cloke and partner Isaac Salazar of 
Hutchinson, KS; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, 
brother Gary &amp; Carolyn Higby of Custer, WA; sister Nellie &amp; 
LeRoy Quade of Salina, KS; brother Clinton Higby of Salina, KS; sister 
Georgia Lytle of Salina, KS. 
 He is preceded in death by his parents, first wife Patricia, second 
wife Freda, brother-in-law Kenny Lytle, sister-in-law Mary Ellen Higby, 
nephew Andrew Higby, step-daughter Trisha Robin Davisson and 5
