Clarnetta A. Whipple, 75, of Ness City passed away July 14, 2024, at Cedar Village, Ness City. &nbsp;She was born on March 30, 1949, in LaCrosse, Kansas, the daughter of Helen (Foos) and Ben Gumescheimer.

Clarnetta was a lifetime resident of Ness County. &nbsp;She attended grade school and high school in Bazine, Kansas. &nbsp;On August 20, 1967, she married Tom Whipple in Bazine, Kansas.

Clarnetta was a homemaker and dedicated caregiver in long term care and in the private sector for many years. &nbsp;Prior to that she was well known as the “Tupperware Lady”. &nbsp; &nbsp;She was also a previous owner/operator of Ness Bowl, in Ness City. &nbsp;She was a member of Ness City Methodist Church. &nbsp;Clarnetta had many friends but her pride and joy was her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. &nbsp;She was an avid gardener and took much pride in her flowers. &nbsp;She loved chocolate, Elvis and anything red!

Clarnetta is survived by her four children, Annetta (Pat) Fellhoelter, Bryan Whipple, of Ness City, Janetta (Pete) Flax, of Ransom and Loretta (Hunter) McMillen of Solomon; two sisters Henrietta (Elvin) Harris of Plains and Rayetta (Donnie) Hoss of Ness City; nine grandchildren, Landon, Jared (Miriam) and Kyler Fellhoelter, Seth, Bryce and Ethan Flax, Raegan, Logan and Kennedy McMillen; two great-grandchildren, Kamree and Kendall Fellhoelter and her companion Rodney Ruff, LaCrosse.

Clarnetta was preceded in death by her brother, Larry Gumescheimer and her parents Ben Gumescheimer and Helen Schaben.

A funeral service will be held at the Methodist Church, Ness City, KS on Thursday, July 18, 2024, 10:00 a.m. followed by burial in the Bazine Cemetery. &nbsp;Viewing will be at Fitzgerald Funeral Home on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Ness County EMS or Leisure Years for Meals on Wheels.

Earl Leonard Donaldson, 94, of Russell, Kansas, died on Monday, July 15, 2024, at the Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell, Kansas.

Earl was born on July 23, 1929, in Maple City, Kansas, the son of Dawson and Bessie (Foster) Donaldson. He grew up in Maple City, Kansas and graduated from Isabel High School in the class of 1948. He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Betty Marlene Donaldson on September 04, 1949, Isabel, Kansas. From this union, Earl and Marlene were blessed with three children Michael, Debra and Steve. The family moved to Russell, Kansas, in 1968, and Earl worked in the oilfield as a drilling production foreman working for Skelly Oil &amp; Getty Oil. He was a longtime member of Otterbein United Methodist Church in Russell. He enjoyed woodworking, traveling, square dancing, watching football, baseball, basketball, and was an avid fisherman and hunter. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Earl is survived by son Michael Donaldson of Plymouth, Michigan, daughter Debra Middendorf of Richmond, Texas and Steve Donaldson of Fritch, Texas; 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; and longtime companion Jean Mai.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marlene; brother Archie Donaldson and sisters Mae McClaskey and Erma Parsons.

A celebration of Earl’s life will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, July 19, 2024, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 P.M. at the Ellenwood Cemetery in Sawyer, Kansas, Friday afternoon. Nancy Lynn Humes Donaldson, 82, of Austin, TX and formerly of Russell, KS, died on July 5, 2024 in Cedar Park, TX.

Nancy was born on August 30, 1941, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Hays, KS, the middle child born to Mary Lea (Stuart) and Donald Clayton Humes. Nancy was baptized at the Bunker Hill Methodist Church on December 7, 1941, and was received into the Catholic Church on November 21,1999 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Austin, TX. Nancy grew up in Russell, KS, and graduated from Russell High School, Class of 1959. She was very proud of her youthful days spent on the campaign trail with Kansas Senator Bob Dole as a member of the Dolls for Dole. Nancy was an accomplished pianist, organist, and vocalist. She went on to teach piano and voice to many children, including her own grandsons. Nancy spent time working at KTBC TV in Austin, TX, Smoky Hills PBS in Bunker Hill, KS, St. Mary, Help of Christians Catholic Church in Gorham, KS, and was retired from IBM Corp. She loved a good cup of coffee, reading, especially books about philosophy and theology, travel, spending time with her family, and cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs.

Nancy is survived by sons, Mark (Erin) Bennett of Burnet, TX and Craig (Colleen) Bennett of Bertram, TX; grandchildren, Craig Jr., William, Joseph, Mark, Mathew, and Kelley; great-grandson Mathew Alan; numerous nieces and nephews, and long-time companion Michael Giauque. She was preceded in death by parents, Mary and Don Humes; brother, Stuart Blaine Humes; sister, Elaine Kay “Lanie” Humes Speck; and son, Kurt Edmund Johnson II.

A Rosary and Funeral Mass will be held in Austin, Texas. Cremation has been selected by the family.

Norma Jean (LaBarge) Wasinger, 84, of Hays, passed away on Thursday, July 4, 2024, at Logan County Senior Living in Oakley. She was born on Aug. 2, 1939, in Rooks County, the oldest child of Phillip and Edmae (Desbien) LaBarge.

Norma graduated from Damar High School in 1958. She married R. Roger Wasinger in 1967.

Surviving are her siblings Marvin (Rosanne) LaBarge, Oakley, Ron (Caryn) LaBarge, Libby, Montana, Phyllis (Tom) Neill, Wichita, and nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Michael LaBarge in 2014, and her husband in 2015.

Family and friends will gather in Hays on Saturday afternoon, July 20, at St. Joseph Church for a rosary at 1:00. Inurnment will immediately follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays.

Sharon Kay Bowers, 83, passed away
July 15, 2024, at Hospice House of Reno County, Hutchinson, Kansas. She was
born on October 23, 1940, in Kansas City, Missouri, and raised in Abilene,
Kansas, by Paul LeRoy and Mae Mary (Morgan) Fisher. On April 26, 1959, she
married James Shelley Bowers in Abilene, Kansas. He passed on January 22, 2017.

A Great Bend resident from 1962 coming
from Oberlin, Sharon worked as a RN, sharing her gift with patients at Central
Kansas Medical Center, Cherry Village, and Larned State Hospital prior to her
retirement. She was an active member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, serving as
president of the St. Mark WELCA, along with other roles. Sharon was a Camp Fire
Leader, Boy Scout Den Mother, and the president of the Resident Council at
River Bend Assisted Living. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting – especially baby
blankets, and jigsaw puzzles.

Survivors include three sons, Barry
Bowers and wife Monica of Great Bend, Robert Bowers and wife Jane of Ottawa,
and Mark Bowers and wife Shirley of Great Bend; one daughter, Shelley Chrivia
and husband Joe of Lupton, Michigan; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her
husband, James; her parents; and brother, Karl Fisher.

There will be no visitation as
cremation has taken place. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday,

Sharon Bowers, age 83

Richard Claire Rupp, a lifelong resident of the Dorrance and Wilson, KS area passed away on July 9, 2024, at Village Manor in Abilene, at the age of 86.

Born on July 22, 1937, to Henry and Ruth Mary (Clason) Rupp, Richard grew up on a farm in Rural Phillips County Kansas. The family later moved to a farm near Long Island, KS where Richard spent his formative years.

After graduating from Long Island High School in 1955, he attended Fort Hays State University for two years. Seeking to further his education, he enlisted in the U.S. Army for 3 years and was sent to process soldiers out-of-country to return home following the Korean conflict.

Much to his chagrin, Richard recently shared with his family that he received an Article 13 for sleeping in and missing PT two days before being discharged. Despite his dereliction of duty, Richard earned a Good Conduct Medal and an honorable discharge as a Private 1st Class.

Upon his return to Kansas, Richard worked to complete his Bachelor’s degree in business at Ft. Hays. On a whim, Richard decided to attempt student teaching and discovered his true calling. He graduated with a degree in business education and later earned his master’s degree with Sumi Cum Laude honors.

Richard dedicated much of his life to education. He taught business classes and coached various sports at Dorrance High School for 15 years. Later, he joined the teaching staff at Lucas Luray High School, where he spent 17 years teaching and coaching before retiring.

In 1967, Richard married Norma Jean Zigler in Russell, KS, and made their home in Dorrance until retirement when the couple then moved to Wilson, KS. Richard actively participated in community service, serving as a member and president of both the Dorrance Lions Club and the Wilson Lions Club.

Sports held a special place in Richard’s heart. His passion for KU basketball began when his family first got electricity on their farm in 1949. He vividly remembered cheering for the Jayhawks during their 1952 national championship victory, listening to radio broadcasts with his brother Clay late into the night.

Richard was also a loyal Chiefs fan, celebrating their victories following many challenging seasons. His family cherished the moments spent cheering alongside him.

Richard is survived by his children, Lisa (Ward) Turnbull of Abilene, Brad Kaufman of Vallejo, CA and Angela (Fred) Arnet of Russell; brother, Clay Rupp of Wilson, KS; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson.

Richard’s legacy extends beyond the classroom, touching the lives of countless students. His friendships formed a close-knit family of brothers and sisters throughout the years. For his family, sharing Richard with those he influenced has been a true honor and blessing.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Norma, his sister Mary “Beth” Johnson, and 1 granddaughter.

Visitation will be held on Friday, 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home in Wilson. The funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, July 20, 2024, at 2:00 PM, at the funeral home, to be concluded with military honors.&nbsp;

Richard Claire Rupp

June Maaske, 90, of Atwood, died at the Good Samaritan Society Atwood on July 13, 2024. She was born Wilma June Finn on August 12, 1933, in Norton, KS, to George and Flora Armstrong Finn. At the age of 47 days, she was adopted by Dewey and Wilma Wills Boatman of Almena, KS. June graduated from Almena High School in 1952. She married Kenneth E Maaske on December 4, 1954. To this union two children were born, Jeri and Mike.

On the day of Barbara Weimer Dehlinger’s birth – September 2, 1932 – her grandfather, Leo Anderson, carried her up and down Penn Avenue in Oberlin, Kansas to introduce her to the world. Barbara died in Oberlin on July 13, 2024, of natural causes including complications from Parkinson’s disease. She was 91 years old.

After spending her childhood in Cambridge, Nebraska and Green River, Wyoming, Barbara graduated from Colorado Women’s College in Denver and from Northwestern University in Evanston Illinois. She also earned a Master’s in Education from Southern Oregon University. For thirty years she was a high school and middle school history and English teacher as well as one of the first female school administrators in the Klamath County School District in Klamath Falls, Oregon, where she retired as vice-principal of Henley Middle School. Upon her retirement, she returned to Oberlin, a place she greatly loved. She was an active member of the Oberlin Covenant Church and served on the board of the Decatur County Museum.

Barbara’s keen interest in the world, particularly politics and current events, took her to the White House to meet Harry Truman in the Oval Office through Girl’s Nation. She appeared on the Voice of America radio program and remembered being greatly moved when she heard Eleanor Roosevelt speak in Chicago. In recent years, travels to Germany, South Africa, and the United Kingdom provided her with plenty of fond memories and experiences. While describing her life as “simply amazing”, she derived her greatest contentment from reading a book in the sunroom of her Oberlin home, where she could gaze out over the surrounding pasture and Sappa Creek.

She is survived by her daughter, Keven Anne Tacchini (Ernie) and her son, Ky Dehlinger (Jim Rondone); her three grandsons, Sam (Heather), Skyler (Courtney), and Connor (Mallory), and nine great grandchildren. Her husband, Sam Dehlinger, and her parents Fern and Russ Weimer, her grandparents Ethel and Everett Smith, and her great uncle George Smith, all predeceased her.

Melody Witt, age 65, of Hugoton, Kansas, died Thursday, July 11, 2024, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton. She was born December 13, 1958, in Houston, Texas, the daughter of Charles Richard and Virginia Ann (Runnels) Engram.

Melody grew up in Houston and graduated from M. B. Smiley High School. She furthered her education at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas, and received her Master’s Degree in School Administration from Stephen F. Austin State University. Melody married Jay Witt on December 21, 1979, in Searcy, Arkansas. She was the principal at Townley Elementary School in Everman, Texas, prior to becoming the principal at Hugoton High School for the last eight years. Melody loved spending time with her family. Her grandchildren were her ultimate joy and reading with them was a very special time for all of them. Her hobbies included quilting, knitting, sewing, cooking, reading, growing plants, and doing for others. Melody was a member of the National Principals Association, Kansas Principals Association and the Texas High School Coaches Wives Association.

Melody is survived by her husband, Jay, of their home; children, Sara Rheagan Witt of Ft. Worth, Texas, Rachel Madeline Witt of Hugoton, and John Rowdy Witt of Miami, Florida; mother, Virginia Engram of Grapeland, Texas; brother, Barry Engram and wife Rebecca of Lorena, Texas; sister, Lee Ann Engram of Temple, Texas; two grandchildren, R’Bree Madeline Witt and Ren Jackson Witt, and various nieces and nephews.

Melody is preceded in death by her father, Charles; and grandparents, TJ and Ruby Engram, and Leonard and Edna Louise Runnels.

Larry G. Snodgrass, age 86, died on Friday, July 12, 2024, at Rhode Island Suites, Ransom, Kansas. He was born on October 17, 1937, in Ransom, Kansas, the son of Earl and Ruby (Charles) Snodgrass. He was raised in Ransom and graduated from Ransom High School in 1955.

On August 4, 1956, he married Melba Sekavec. This marriage ended in 1959. Larry served in the United States Army, in South Korea, from December 1956 to December 1958. He later married Carol Younger in September 1961. She preceded him in death. In December 1992, he re-married Melba. She survives.

Larry is survived by his sons, Steven and Larry Alan; daughters, Sharon and Lynne, his brother, Kay; and stepdaughter, Shannon.

Honoring his wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be no services at this time.

Enid "EJ" Foos, age 89, of Lincoln, NE passed away July 11, 2024. &nbsp;Enid June was born November 21, 1934, in a snowstorm on a farm outside of Ness City, KS to Emma (Schwartz) and Adam Walter.

Enid attended school in Ness City and graduated in 1952 from Bazine High School. &nbsp;Enid married Floyd Foos in the Methodist Church, Bazine on June 17, 1951. &nbsp;They had two daughters: Renee (Bill) Braun, and Tamera Pearson (Larry) Redfield. &nbsp;

Enid enjoyed doing ceramics, crocheting, reading and playing cards and she was an excellent skater either on the ice or the roller rink. &nbsp;As time passed EJ learned how to play the organ which she was so proud of. &nbsp;One of her favorites was coloring on her tablet and texting (talking on the phone) with her friends. &nbsp;Working as a para with little children was a job where both enjoyed one another. &nbsp;Floyd and Enid went on several tours after they retired as well as attended the Ness City Eagles school activities. &nbsp;Enid and Floyd were regulars at the Fort Hays State University home football and basketball games. &nbsp;Once Enid moved to Lincoln, NE she quickly realized being a Husker fan was mandatory! &nbsp;Although come basketball season Enid was a diehard KU Jayhawk (Bill Self) fan. &nbsp;Enid did have a good time attending the Husker volleyball, basketball and softball games. &nbsp;One of her highlights in 2022 was attending the Iowa State Fair where she rode the Tilt-A-Whirl (her favorite) and laughed heartily throughout the entire ride! &nbsp;Enid was Branden's baseball team's biggest fan for sure. &nbsp;EJ never met a stranger.

Enid had four grandchildren: Christopher (Allison) Braun, Tenille (Jeff) Parker, Chelsae (Chase) Braun and Branden (Erica) Pearson; seven great-grandchildren: MaKenzie, Devyn, Brynlee, Madison, Karlee (Josh), Paige and Ramsay; and one great-great grandchild: Eloise.

Enid was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Foos; mother, Emma and daddy, Adam Walter

Funeral Services will be on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at the Methodist Church in Ness City, KS followed by burial in the Ness City Cemetery.

Viewing will be at Fitzgerald Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, from 9:30 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Ronald N. Wilson, 67, died July 13, 2024 at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

He was born May 8, 1957 in Dodge City, the son of Ray L. and Rowena Kay Sorem Wilson.

A lifetime area resident he was a farmer and rancher. He graduated from Fort Hays State University in 1979 with a Bachelors Degree in Business. During his time at FHSU he was a member of Phi Eta Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi, and Alpha Kappa Pi honor societies. He was a fan of KU Basketball, Chiefs Football, and the Kansas City Royals. In his spare time, Ronnie enjoyed playing rec softball and volleyball, loved water and snow skiing, and hunting. He was always willing to learn a new game and helped on the chain gang and at track meets. He was a member and Elder of the United Presbyterian Church, Jetmore and served as the finance officer for forty years. In his younger years he also helped with youth group. Ronnie loved being a rancher and farmer and his pets (but he believed they should stay outdoors). He loved being a father and grandfather and teaching his children and grandchildren to ride horses and ski. A highlight throughout his life was to go watch his children and grandchildren’s activities and sports events.

On June 11, 2011 he married Paula J. Fillmore at Jetmore; she survives.

Other survivors include: children, Robin (Brian) Beil, and Rustin Wilson, both of Jetmore; step children, Lee (Alisha) Wehkamp, Ingalls, Matt Wehkamp, Ingalls, Lindsay (Hayden) Borth, Montezuma; two brothers, Rodney Wilson, Jetmore, Ross (Cindi) Wilson, Hays; five grandchildren, Shaylei, Malynn, Ashlynn, Brynn, Alec; four step grandchildren, Maverick, Rylee, Miller, Sadie.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Ryan Wilson.

Smith Center – Kendall L. Nichols Sr., 83, passed away Friday, July 12, 2024, at his home in Smith Center, KS.

Kendall was born on December 13, 1940, in Rooks County, KS, the son of Levi James and Mary Leona (McReynolds) Nichols.&nbsp; On June 5, 1960, he married Hazel Hays in Gaylord, KS, to this union they were blessed with three children, Kenny, Sandy and Toban.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Roger Nichols and a grandson Joshua Levi Nichols.

Kendall is survived by his wife Hazel Nichols of Smith Center; two sons, Kenny (Michelle) Nichols of Gaylord, Toban Nichols of Los Angels, CA; a daughter Sandy (Roger) Robinson of Wilson; three grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at All Faiths Funeral Chapel, 113 S. Madison St., Smith Center, KS, with Pastor Lance McDowell officiating.&nbsp; A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., with the family present from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. to greet family and friends.&nbsp;

Nichols Sr., 83, passed away Friday, July 12, 2024, at his home in Smith Center, KS.Kendall was born on December 13, 1940, in Rooks County, KS, the son of Levi James and Mary Leona (McReynolds) Nichols.&nbsp; On June 5, 1960, he married Hazel Hays in Gaylord, KS, to this union they were blessed with three children, Kenny, Sandy and Toban.He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Roger Nichols and a grandson Joshua Levi Nichols.Kendall is survived by his wife Hazel Nichols of Smith Center; two sons, Kenny (Michelle) Nichols of Gaylord, Toban Nichols of Los Angels, CA; a daughter Sandy (Roger) Robinson of Wilson; three grandchildren and six great grandchildren.Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at All Faiths Funeral Chapel, 113 S. Marilyn Lou Jensen, 69, Victoria, died Sunday, July 14, 2024 surrounded by loved ones at her home.

She was born on July 29, 1954, in Atwood, Kansas, the daughter of Alois ”Lew” and Antoinette (Vrbas) Horinek. Marilyn moved to Hays in 1972 to attend Fort Hays State University, graduated from there in 1975, and continued living in Hays until moving to Victoria in 2020. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hays and after moving to Victoria was a member of the Basilica of St. Fidelis and the St. Fidelis Daughters of Isabella and Christian Mothers.

In 1994, she began working as a paraeducator for USD 489 and finished her career working with the math department at Hays High School. Marilyn’s passion was helping students who struggled with math and assisting those with special needs. She also dedicated much of her time to teaching religion classes, volunteering with the Girl Scouts of America, and she loved spending time with her 11 grandchildren: Camden, Andy, Peyton, Julia, Madox, Eric, Brogan, Lillian, Olivia, Max, and Oscar.

Surviving family includes her two daughters, Tami Zimmerman and husband Matt and Sara Kuhl and husband Stephen, all of Hays, two sons, Todd Jensen and wife Kendra of Victoria and Brett Jensen and wife Sandra of Waxhaw, NC, one brother, Ronald Horinek and wife Janet of Phillipsburg, three sisters, Pat Skolout of Atwood, Donna Long of Scott City, and Janet Vaughan and husband Mike of Hawthorne, CA, and 11 grandchildren.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers-in-law, Kenneth E. Long and Edgar A. Skolout, and a sister-in-law, Mary C. Horinek.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, July 18, 2024 at the Basilica of St. Fidelis. Visitation will be from 6:00 pm until 8:00 on Wednesday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and from 9:00 am until service time on Thursday at the Basilica. Glen B. Henderson, 92, passed away
July 14, 2024, at Premier Living Center, Wichita, Kansas. He was born on November
28, 1931, in Scranton, Arkansas, to Oliver and Iva (Garrison) Henderson. On March
22, 1952, he married Wanda Howell in Russellville, Arkansas. She passed on July
1, 2003.

A resident of Arkansas until 1978,
Glen started his career in the poultry industry working for Arkansas Valley
Industry. He later formed a partnership as Double H Farm operating an egg
poultry plant and establishing the first motel in Yell County. Once he moved to
Kansas, he worked for Pawnee Beef Builders then switched to the transport side
of agriculture founding Henderson Trucking Company, where he hauled and
brokered hay.

Glen was a member of the First
Assembly of God Church in Russellville as well as Great Bend, Kansas, where he
served as a deacon. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club in Russellville,
Arkansas Poultry Association, and Board of Directors for PCA. He enjoyed
raising yorkies and birds. 

Survivors include his beloved sons,
Dr. Rusty Henderson and wife Cindy of Fort Smith, Arkansas, and Kevin Henderson
and wife Lonna of Wichita; three grandchildren, Chase Henderson and wife
Elizabeth of Nashville, Tennessee, Amber Maurer and husband Brandon of Wichita,
Ethan Henderson and wife Mikaela of Hays; three great grandchildren, Sheppard
and Olive Henderson, and Bailey Maurer; and numerous loved ones.

He is preceded in death by his wife,
Wanda; his parents; brother, Gerald Henderson; and sister, Jean Burris.

8:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at Bryant Funeral Home. Graveside service

Gerald Eugene Mauler, 85, passed away
July 13, 2024, at Medicalodges of Great Bend, Kansas. He was born on February 27,
1939, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Bernard F. and Hermina A. (Skolaut) Mauler. On June
6, 1960, he married Lois A. Stoss at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Olmitz,
Kansas.

A lifetime Barton County resident,
Gerald graduated from Otis High School in 1957, then attended Kansas State
University before transferring to Southeast Votech in Nebraska where he studied
mechanics. He then returned to Great Bend and worked at Parish Motors, later
Marmie Motors as a mechanic, even going on to share that knowledge by teaching
mechanic courses at Barton Community College. Gerald eventually made the switch
as a fourth-generation farmer at 4M Farm, which included raising cattle and growing
and selling certified seed. 

Gerald was a member of Prince of Peace
Parish and was a faithful navigator as a fourth degree Knight of Columbus. He
never met a stranger and was an active member of his community. Gerald was a delegate
to the Kansas State Board of Agriculture, member of the 4H Holding Board, ASCS
Board, Great Bend Chamber of Commerce, and Sunflower Polka Club. He was
instrumental in starting the Barton County Fair and the Tractor Pull. Gerald
taught tractor safety courses, built stock cars for racing, and enjoyed bowling
and golfing. Above all, he loved his family, always being there for them and
never missing an event. 

Survivors include his wife of 64
years, Lois; children, Kevin Mauler and fiancé Pollie Unruh of Great Bend,
Kathy Fischer of Great Bend, Connie McKee and husband Bill of Colleyville,
Texas, Jeff Mauler and wife Sally of Great Bend, and Shelly Taylor and husband
Deron of Olathe; sixteen grandchildren, Brandon Mauler and wife Mindy, Kaley
Williams and husband Brett, Rebecca Karlin and husband Matt, Trent Mauler and
wife Chelsea, Kenzie Folk and husband Ben, Maddi Unruh, McKenna Stetler and
husband Cody, Nakita Adame and husband Kino, Justin Fischer and wife Autumn,
Sam McKee, Lindsey Kelly and husband Ryan, Hannah Mauler, Payton Mauler, Morgan
Taylor, Sydney Taylor and Jackson Taylor; twenty great grandchildren; brother,

Helen Anne Wetzel, 90, passed away
July 13, 2024, at Brookdale Senior Living, Great Bend, Kansas. She was born on
July 2, 1934, to George Paul and Alta (Morris) Maskus in Ford County, Kansas.
Helen was baptized as an infant at St. Michaels Lutheran Church in Hodgeman
County on August 5, 1934, her sponsors being Henry and Bertha Niedens. She was
confirmed in the Lutheran faith in June 1946 at St. Michaels. Helen attended
grade school in Hodgeman County and graduated from Dodge City High School in
1952.

She married Edgar “Ed” Wetzel on
December 28, 1952, at St. Michaels. She followed her Air Force husband for 3
years of married life before moving to Great Bend in December 1955. Helen was a
homemaker.

Helen was a member of Trinity Lutheran
Church since 1955, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, youth leader,
member of the Care team, and assisted with LOGOS and Vacation Bible School. She
also served as secretary and president of Bethany Circle. 

She enjoyed playing Bridge, spending
time with her family - especially the great great granddaughters, singing, good
friends, and reading. She and Ed loved to travel and enjoyed trips to Jamaica,
Hawaii, Alaska, Acapulco, Canada, Niagara Falls, and a Caribbean cruise for a
belated honeymoon. Many fond memories were made while wintering in South Texas.

Survivors include her son, Randy
Wetzel and wife Brenda of Great Bend; daughter, Renee Holl and husband Dennis
of St. John; grandson, Dennis Price of Wichita; three great grandchildren,
Haley Jackson and husband Chris of Russell, Cody Piland and wife Chelsa of
Wichita, and Ava Winters of Winfield; three great great granddaughters, Kaylee Jackson,
Kellie Jackson, and Peyton Piland; two brothers, Jim Maskus and wife Pat of
Edmond, Oklahoma, and Richard Maskus and wife Linda of Bolivar, Missouri;

Ruth E. Zimmerman, 91, Hays, died Friday, July 12, 2024 surrounded by family at Via Christi Village.

She was born December 19, 1932 in Schoenchen, the daughter of Joseph and Julia (Gottschalk) Kronewitter.&nbsp; Ruth graduated from Schoenchen High School, and on August 13, 1951 she was united in marriage to Roman C. “Roy” Zimmerman in Schoenchen.&nbsp; They celebrated 62 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on December 8, 2013.&nbsp; She worked at the Ellis County Court House, USave Bakery, Stromgren Supports, and for many years was a bank teller at Hays State Bank, Hays National Bank, and First National Bank.&nbsp; She possessed a strong faith, attended daily mass, and devoutly prayed the rosary.&nbsp; Ruth was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and for over 50 years was a member of the Daughters of Isabella Circle #254.&nbsp; She enjoyed dancing, music, playing cards, traveling, and she loved and cherished her family and their time together.

Survivors include her son Keith Zimmerman and wife Anne of Hays, three daughters, Sheila Kelsay and husband Larry of Wichita, Karen Kisner and husband Dale of Hays, and Kay Werth and husband Loran of Hays, two sisters, Jane Kisner and Carol Legleiter, both of Hays, 14 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was born on October 4, 1936, in Scott City, Kansas, the son of Clyde &amp; Adlee Wallace Logan. A resident of the Pence Community in Scott County, Kansas for over sixty years, he was a lifelong farmer and cattleman in Scott and Wichita Counties and a seed salesman for over thirty years for Pioneer Seed Company.

&nbsp;Cloy attended the Pence Community Church in Pence, Kansas, Anthem Masonic Lodge #284, and Shriners both of Scott City, Kansas, and served on the Scott County ASCS committee board and USD 466 School Board.

&nbsp;On October 14, 1961, he married Leona Marie Hanzlick in Scott City, Kansas. She survives.

&nbsp;Survivors include his Wife - Leona M. Logan of Scott City, Kansas, Three Sons - Calvin &amp; Leyla of Broomfield, Colorado, Kyle &amp; Hilary of Hays, Kansas, and Kurt of Scott City, Kansas, One Sister - Judy Rokowski of Wilmington, Delaware, One Brother - Leon &amp; Joyce Logan of Lenexa, Kansas, Five grandchildren - Blake &amp; Megan Logan of Westminster, Colorado, Chloe Logan of Hays, Kansas, Thomas &amp; Diana Logan of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, Karlee &amp; Daniel Hair of Brownell, and Kylee of Scott City. He has three great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

&nbsp;He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Adlee; one brother, Duane; and one daughter-in-law, Ashlee.

Floyd Robert Rohr, 93, Hays, died Thursday, July 11, 2024 at HaysMed.

He was born November 25, 1930 in Ellis County, the son of Lawrence P. and Katherine C. (Doerfler) Rohr. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving during the Korean War and was stationed in France, Germany, and Belgium. After his discharge, he was an oil field engine repairman owning Glenn Gill Repair for 19 years. He then worked for Knighton Oil Company, Inc. until he was well into his eighties as he loved repairing engines and working with his hands. On May 2, 1960 he was united in marriage to Margie Lou Kreutzer in Hays and they celebrated over 64 years of marriage. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #9076, and enjoyed reading Weekly Magazine, taking care of his garden and lawn at the shop, and was a devoted husband and hard worker from a young age.

Survivors include his wife Margie, a brother Walter Rohr and wife Doris of Orange Park, FL, a sister Ruth Pfeifer of Hays, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Elmer (Irene), Gilbert (Edna), Vernon (Annetta), Fr. Vincent, and LeRoy Rohr, and two sisters, Esther Ruder (Edwin) and Minnie Zimmerman (Victor), a brother-in-law, Leonard Pfeifer, and a sister-in-law, Mary Rohr.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, July 16, 2024 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Fr. Curtis Carlson OFM Cap. and Fr. Alvin Werth officiating. Burial will follow with military honors by the Hays VFW Post #9076 Honor Guard in St. Joseph Cemetery. She was born December 19, 1932 in Schoenchen, the daughter of Joseph and Julia (Gottschalk) Kronewitter. Ruth graduated from Schoenchen High School, and on August 13, 1951 she was united in marriage to Roman C. “Roy” Zimmerman in Schoenchen. They celebrated 62 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on December 8, 2013. She worked at the Ellis County Court House, USave Bakery, Stromgren Supports, and for many years was a bank teller at Hays State Bank, Hays National Bank, and First National Bank. She possessed a strong faith, attended daily mass, and devoutly prayed the rosary. Ruth was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and for over 50 years was a member of the Daughters of Isabella Circle #254. She enjoyed dancing, music, playing cards, traveling, and she loved and cherished her family and their time together.

It is highly probable that Graham County, Kansas native Mike Boss was born with a paintbrush in his right hand. His earliest art reflects the same expression as his most recent works. Trains, planes, cars, trucks, ships, boats - all those images that triggered the imagination of the boy continued to inspire the man. After graduating from Hill City High School, Mike majored in music at Southern Illinois University and Kansas State University.

As an historian, extensive research and detail went into every one of Mike's paintings, with each having a story of its own. His work is in galleries and the homes of private collectors around the world. Also an accomplished music conductor and bass player, Mike's music focused on the sounds of classical symphonies. He continued to play "Big Bertha" until pain in his arm and shoulder made it too difficult. The only thing fonder to Mike's heart than the canvas and his music was Buckwheat, his late and beloved toy poodle, who can still be found hanging out somewhere in all of his paintings.

Mike lived and worked creating his wonderful works of art in the place he affectionately called East Overshoe, a.k.a. Hill City, Kansas. Up until earlier this year, when chronic issues combined with sudden illness began to take its toll, Mike continued to paint. Even on his most difficult days near the end, the creative ideas and yearning to pick up a brush never stopped.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Lois Boss, his brother Richard Boss, aunts, uncles and cousins, his beloved Buckwheat, and, more recently, Buddy.

Mike leaves behind only a couple of distant relatives, and a whole host of friends from across the world who loved, appreciated, and will miss him dearly for who he was. A man with incredible skills &amp; talents, humor &amp; sarcasm, and the ability to light up the lives of so many with his music, art, and incredible knowledge of so many topics, including the night skies. A paint brush in his hand brought him many hours of enjoyment with each piece he created. May you rest in peace, Mike. The world here is definitely less colorful without you. Instead of looking up to the sky you are now a shining star beaming down at us. The heavens are now much brighter, more animated, and you have a whole new canvas to bring to life.

Interment of Mike's ashes will occur at a later date in the Boss family plot in the Morland City Cemetery, Morland, Kansas.

Dutch Mannel, age 70 years, of Great Bend, Kansas passed away on Wednesday morning, July 10, 2024 at Azria Health Woodhaven in Great Bend.&nbsp; Dutch was born on September 4, 1953 at Ellsworth, Kansas to Paul O. and Fern (Smith) Mannel.&nbsp; He grew up in Lincoln County, Kansas and lived in various locations including Ellsworth, Hutchinson, Burrton, Holyrood, Wichita, St. John and Salina, Kansas before coming to Great Bend to live with his daughter April in 2019.&nbsp; Dutch worked for S&amp;K Oil Production in Burrton, Kansas until a back injury and health issues caused him to be disabled at the age of 32.&nbsp; He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, traveling, and was active on social media and had a circle of friends he enjoyed keeping in contact with.

Dale Gene Eaton, 67, passed away suddenly but peacefully at home on July 8, 2024, in rural Palco, Kansas.

A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at 11:00 AM with visitation starting at 10:00 AM prior to the service at Red Line Church of God 3804 H Road in Palco, KS. Burial will follow at the Green Mound Cemetery, rural Palco, KS.

Dale was born on August 2, 1956, in Hays, KS, to Joe and Mary (Towns) Eaton. He graduated from Palco High School in 1974. During high school, Dale was involved in many activities. He was in the swing choir, played trombone, was on the football team, and participated in theatre productions. He also took Grand Champion Beef Feeder Calf while in 4H.

In 1978, Dale graduated from MidAmerica Nazarene College, Olathe, KS, with a BA in Music Education. It was during his time at MANC that he met Lynette Aune, and they were married on July 8, 1978, in Minot, ND. After their marriage, Dale and Lyn embarked on a journey of teaching music in Larned, KS, and Altamont, KS, before finally settling in Olathe, KS, in 1982. He completed his Master of Music at Fort Hays State University, Hays, KS, in 1991.

In his 28 years of teaching music in the Kansas City metro area, Dale taught at Harmon High School in Kansas City, KS, and at Blue Valley Northwest High School in Overland Park, KS. In addition to teaching during these years, he spent the summers farming out at Palco. He retired from teaching in 2010 but continued to farm up until the present time.

Dale loved music. He was a wonderful tenor and a highly respected choral conductor. He sang the tenor solo in Handel’s Messiah many times. Over his career, he sang with multiple church choirs, including the choir at College Church of the Nazarene in Olathe where he was a member.

Dale's love for his family was unwavering. He was an avid hunter and cherished spending summers at the farm. His passion for family heritage was evident in his attendance at as many family reunions as possible. One of his fondest memories was singing in the family quartet ‘The Eatones’ with his nephew, brother, and father.

Survivors include his mother, Mary Eaton, Palco, KS; brother, Donald Eaton, Olathe, KS; Aunt Shirley (Towns) Burr, Elba, AL; sister-in-law, Mavis (Leigh) Kallestad, Wayzata, MN; sister-in-law, Sharon Eaton, Nashville, TN, and many beloved cousins; Nieces and nephews Britney (Scott) Rice, Olathe, KS; Caleb (Sarah) Eaton, Leadville, CO; Joshua (Tiffany) Eaton, Arlington, TX; Darci (Eric) Kimmerling, Henderson, TN; Matthew (Deborah) Eaton, Holt, MI and many cousins-in-law, great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Lyn (Aune) Eaton, his father, Joseph Eaton, his brother Dan Eaton, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

One of his fondest memories was singing in the family quartet ‘The Eatones’ with his nephew, brother, and father.Survivors include his mother, Mary Eaton, Palco, KS; brother, Donald Eaton, Olathe, KS; Aunt Shirley (Towns) Burr, Elba, AL; sister-in-law, Mavis (Leigh) Kallestad, Wayzata, MN; sister-in-law, Sharon Eaton, Nashville, TN, and many beloved cousins; Nieces and nephews Britney (Scott) Rice, Olathe, KS; Caleb (Sarah) Eaton, Leadville, CO; Joshua (Tiffany) Eaton, Arlington, TX; Darci (Eric) Kimmerling, Henderson, TN; Matthew (Deborah) Eaton, Holt, MI and many cousins-in-law, great-nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Lyn (Aune) Eaton, his father, Joseph Eaton, his brother Dan Eaton, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Michael G. “Boss” Berry, 69, died Thursday, June 13, 2024, at Western Plains – St. Catherine Hospital in Dodge City, Kansas. He was born July 15, 1954, in Garden City, Kansas, the son of Don &amp; Lorena (Bell) Berry.

Mike grew up and attended schools in Deerfield, Kansas, and graduated from Deerfield High School in 1972. On August 17, 1974, he married Debra A. Eskelund in Lakin, Kansas. They made their home in Garden City where they have lived since. Mike has always been a hard worker. He began his working career as a small boy delivering newspapers. In his high school years, he worked for several different farmers. While working on the farm, they would take a lunch break inside the scale house where it was cooler, and a TV was available. Every day they watched Days of Our Lives and Mike became hooked on the show and continued to watch it for over 50 years. While still in high school, Mike started working weekends for his Uncle Dale Berry at J L Douglass Roofing. Mike then worked at Simpson Brothers Electric which started his career as an electrician. He later worked at B and R Electric, and Geier Electric. In 1986, Mike started M Berry Electric which he owned and operated until his retirement in 2022.

Mike was a member of Buffalo Dunes Golf Club and loved the game of golf. He also enjoyed watching movies, Days of Our Lives, Young Sheldon, Trading in the Stock Market, and listening to smooth jazz. He also loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Mike is survived by his wife Debra Berry of the home; two sons Ryan &amp; wife Briea Berry of Castle Pines, Colorado and Ross &amp; wife Shanda Berry of Parker, Colorado; a daughter Renae &amp; husband Brandon Pruitt of Leawood, Kansas; five precious grandchildren Brooke and Reid Berry, Benjamin, Rowan and Rylee Pruitt; his mother Lorena Berry; two brothers Marvin &amp; wife Diana Berry and Denton &amp; wife Karen Berry; two sisters Diana Weatherred and Belinda Berry; and a brother-in-law Joe &amp; wife Colleen Eskelund.

Mike is preceded in death by his father Don Berry and a brother-in-law Jim Weatherred.

Mike was never seen without wearing a pocket t-shirt. In Mike’s memory, the family would encourage everyone attending his service to wear a pocket t-shirt, which will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 20, 2024, at Turning Point Church of the Nazarene in Garden City with Rev. Nathan Haeck officiating. Burial will follow at the Deerfield Cemetery in Deerfield, Kansas. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials given to Friends of Buffalo Dunes in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden City. Condolences may be given at garnandfuneralhomes.com.
