Ann R. Phillips, 73, passed away April 16, 2022, at Hospice House, 
Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp; She was born January 24, 1949, in Great Bend, KS, to 
Virgil and Peggy (Milloway) Wilhelm.

Ann was a 1967 graduate of Otis-Bison High School, Otis, KS and went 
on to graduate from Salt City Business College, Hutchinson, KS. Ann was 
employed by The Center for Counseling and Consultation, Great Bend, KS, 
retiring in 2018 with over 35 years of service. She was a member of 
Journey Mennonite Church, South Hutchinson, KS, Hutchinson Horticulture 
Club, and the Reno County Volunteer Center.

She enjoyed gardening, decorating and spending fun times with friends
 and family, including traveling and weekly card games with special 
friends. She was also skilled in grooming family and neighborhood dogs 
and had Starbucks at the top of her list for drinks that required a 
predefined and orchestrated method of drinking.&nbsp; She loved to attend 
grandchildrens’ activities, shopping and took joy in spending time 
outdoors whether on long walks or leisurely bike rides with Jim and 
their dog Parker.&nbsp; Ann cemented lifelong friendships with her co-workers
 who became like family during her career as a medical transcriptionist.
 After retirement, Ann wore many hats and volunteered at numerous 
places, including the Hutchinson Fox Theatre, Volunteer Center of Reno 
County Friends in Action program as well as the Etc. Shop where she had 
such fun times with her co- workers, the ‘Linen Sisters’. She was a 
lovable lady with a fun sense of humor who took pride in being ‘put 
together’ and having her home and workspace beautifully decorated in the
 holidays of each season. She always brightened any gathering with her 
happy smile and quick wit. Ann truly valued her ‘tight-knit’ 
neighborhood, church, and community that she lived and participated in 
and could be counted on to be a team player. If there was a need, she 
was there to support it. She thoroughly enjoyed her various activities, 
but her most treasured times were when she was with her family, 
especially her grandkids, with whom she got so much enjoyment from and 
showered them with love always. Of all the things that she accomplished 
in her life, her most cherished roles were wife, mother, grandma, 
daughter, sister, and friend.

On July 19, 1969, Ann married the love of her life, James Lee 
Phillips, in Larned, KS and that night watched Neil Armstrong walk on 
the moon. They shared over 52 beautiful years of marriage.

She is survived by: her husband, Jim Phillips of Hutchinson, KS; 
daughter, Dana Darrah and husband Chad of Hutchinson, KS, and daughter, 
Nicole Beatty and husband Chad of Lawrence, KS; grandchildren, Lauren 
and Carter Darrah, and twins, Greyson and Liam Beatty; numerous nieces 
and nephews; and her lovable Westie, Parker.

Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Virgil and Peggy Wilhelm, and brother, Duane Wilhelm.

A Celebration of Life is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, April 23, 
2022, at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson, KS with Pastor Judy Miller 
officiating. Burial will follow in the Partridge Cemetery, Partridge, 
KS.&nbsp; Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, April 22, 2022, with
 the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.

Willard F. Renfro Jr., 77, passed away April 17, 2022, at Harry 
Hynes Hospice in Wichita. He was born on January 24, 1945, in Great 
Bend, to Willard F. Renfro Sr. and Juanita Renfro-Berry. He married 
Linda Ann Churchill on March 16, 1963, at Great Bend.&nbsp; She died on 
October 9, 2012.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Willy worked at the Great Bend Cemetery for many years.

Survivors include, his son and daughter in law, Travis and Heidi 
Renfro of Shawnee; and two grandchildren, Samantha Renfro and Blake 
Renfro. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Linda Ann 
Renfro; a son, Grant Kemper Renfro; and his brother, Danny Renfro.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, April
 20, 2022, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 
6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, 
April 21, 2022, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Pastor Joseph Smeragliuolo

Willard F. Renfro Jr.

Catherine Elizabeth (Shields) Neal, 94, passed away on April 17, 2022, in
 Oberlin, KS. She was born on June 16, 1927, to Joseph John and 
Elizabeth Catherine (Schlageck) Schiltz in Angelus, KS.
 Catherine grew up in the Menlo and Hoxie area but graduated from 
Sacred Heart Academy High School in Wichita, KS in 1945. On February 
21, 1949 Catherine married Delbert Shields and to that union they had 8 
children. She enjoyed being a home maker to her children. Catherine 
was a Certified Nurses Aide, Restorative Aide and worked in Respiratory 
Therapy while working at the Decatur County Hospital. After working at 
the hospital, she worked in Physical Therapy at the Good Samaritan 
Society in Oberlin. She would later marry Varlan Neal on April 27, 2001
 in Oberlin at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was an active 
member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she was involved in 
the Altar Society and the Ladies Auxiliary. She also loved to sew, 
making all her grandchildren jean quilts, play BINGO and go fishing.
 Catherine is survived by sons: Larry Shields of Lincoln, NE, Lloyd 
(Clarice) Shields of McCook, NE, Leslie (Dee) Shields of Lincoln, NE, 
Lee Shields of McCook, NE, and Alan Shields of Oberlin, KS; daughters: 
Kathleen (Jay) Tschetter of Lincoln, NE and Charlene (Daren) Agan of 
Oberlin, KS; 17 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. She was 
preceded in death by her parents, husbands: Delbert Shields and Varlan 
Neal; daughter: Teresa Dowling; brother: Harold Schiltz; sisters: 
Loretta Hayden, Mary Ann Seeberger, Florine Pritchard, and infant 
Elizabeth Catherine.
 A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, April 22, 2022, at 
Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oberlin at 10:30 AM. Visitation will be 
from 2:00 – 7:00 PM on Thursday, April 21, 2022, at Pauls Funeral Home, 
Oberlin. Rosary will be held at 7:00 PM. Burial will be in the Selden

Catherine Elizabeth Neal

Darrell D. Brensing, age 86, of Manhattan, went home to be with his LORD and Savior on February 9, 2022.
 Darrell was born September 23, 1935, in Great Bend, Kansas, the son 
of Jakie F. and Hulda H. Brensing of Hudson, Kansas. He was a resident 
of Manhattan since 1969.
 Darrell received his Associate of Arts Degree from Hutchinson 
Community College, his Bachelor of Arts degree from Ft. Hays State 
University, his Master of Arts degree from Pittsburg State University, 
and his Ph.D. from Kansas State University. He married Patricia L. 
Ginder of Stafford, Kansas on July 29, 1956. 
 Darrell began his professional career as an Industrial Arts teacher 
with the Hutchinson Public Schools in Hutchinson, Kansas in 1957. He 
later started the first Distributive Education Cooperative program in 
the Hutchinson Public School System and was recognized as the “Father of
 Vocational Education” in Hutchinson as he started numerous vocational 
education programs while employed there. 
 In 1969, Darrell was hired by the USD 383 school system as Director 
of the Manhattan Area Vocational Technical School, now known as 
Manhattan Area Technical College. He served in this capacity for 7 years
 and was credited with establishing numerous innovative programs for the
 school, recognized as one of the outstanding vocational technical 
schools in the nation. In January 1976, he took a break from the 
education field and entered the banking business, joining Walt and Alan 
Bell as Vice President of Citizens State Bank. His love of educating 
students caused him to return to the education field in 1977, when he 
joined the American Institute of Baking as director of education when 
the institute moved from Chicago to Manhattan. He was later promoted to
 Vice President of Education and enjoyed a 20-year career with AIB. In 
this capacity he spoke throughout the world on a variety of topics as 
well as to national and international trade organizations. His ability 
to design and develop innovative programs earned him the distinction of 
being recognized in Who’s Who in Kansas, Who’s Who in the Midwest, 
Outstanding Educators in America and Strathmore’s Who’s Who Registry of 
Business Leaders. 
 Darrell’s greatest satisfaction was assisting young men and women in
 gaining employment and seeing them succeed in a rewarding career. To 
assist them in obtaining gainful employment, he authored the book, 
“Marketing Yourself, Making the Most of What You’ve Got.” He dedicated 
this book to his grandchildren in case he wasn’t around to assist them 
in their job search when they needed his advice and counsel. 
 Darrell was an active member of the Manhattan Rotary Club, serving 
as president of the club in 1982-1983. He was named Rotary 
International Paul Harris Fellow in 1991. One of his greatest pleasures
 in Rotary was to start the Kansas State University Rotaract Club in 
1990 and served as their sponsor or co-sponsor until 2016. 
 Darrell was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church 
where he enjoyed participating with the “Old Geezers” group that 
performed various types of maintenance for the church properties. 
 Darrell also served as president of the Manhattan Country Club, 
president of the United Way of Riley County, was a member of the 
Manhattan Chamber of Commerce where he was named “Volunteer of the Year”
 in 1993, in addition to numerous trade organizations during his 
professional career. 
 Survivors include his wife Pat of Manhattan; son Doug Brensing and 
his wife Roxanne of Lenexa, Kansas; daughter Kelly Brensing White and 
her husband Tim of Manhattan; six grandchildren: Helane (Ben) Downey of 
Mission, KS; Brandon (Tess) Brensing of Olathe, KS; Tricia (Jeremy) 
Holliday of St. George; Jamey White of Manhattan; and Daniel (Laura) 
Bennison of Leawood, KS; eight great-grandchildren: Rylee and Emma 
Downey, Hudson Brensing, Dean, Jeremiah, and Addy Holliday; Brooke and 
Ann Bennison; sister-in-law Bev Vance; and many nieces, nephews and 
cousins. 
 He was preceded in death by his parents Jakie and Hulda Brensing, brother Myron Brensing, and grandchild Tyler White.

Darrell D. Brensing

Phyllis Moyer Fater, age 77, passed away on Sunday, April 17, 2022, at
 the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas. She was born on March
 6, 1945, in Sellersivllie, Pa, the daughter of Jacob and Ethel Moyer.&nbsp;

Phyllis grew up in Pennsylvania with her sister Carolyn and brother 
Richard. In 1967, she earned a Bachelors of Education from the Kutztown 
State College.

Phyllis raised three children in Bixby, Oklahoma and lived there from
 1973 until 2017 when she moved to Fort Collins, Colorado to be near her
 son, Matthew Fater. In January of 2019, she moved to Scott City, Kansas
 to be near her daughter, Melissa.

She was heavily involved in education, working in early childhood 
education after earning her Masters in Early Childhood Education from 
Northeastern State University in Talequah, Oklahoma. She was started the
 first Parents as Teachers program in the state of Oklahoma. She retired
 from teaching at the Glenpool Elementary school in Glenpool, Oklahoma 
after 32 years.&nbsp;

Phyllis will always be remembered by her friends and family for her 
active life, involvement in her church, the WaWa’s (Women’s association 
of Water Aerobics), and joy she had when she was with all children, 
especially her three grandchildren.

Survivors include, her sons, Stephen &amp; Carrie Fater of Tulsa, 
Oklahoma, and Matthew Fater of Ft. Collins, Colorado, her daughter

Donald K. Boese, 88, died April 16, 2022, at Country Place Senior 
Living, Hoisington. He was born May 10, 1933, in La Crosse, Kansas, the 
son of Peter and Elsa (Ebert) Boese. Don graduated from Alexander High 
School, Alexander, Kansas. He then served in the United States Army as a
 Private First Class in Korea from 1955 to 1957.&nbsp;

On April 4, 1954, he married Janet K. Wilson in Garden City, Kansas. 
They moved to Hoisington in 1955. Upon his return from Korea, he 
accepted a position as a maintenance engineer for Clara Barton Hospital,
 and worked there for 32 years, retiring in 1995.

Don was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the V.F.W. and
 the American Legion. He was a charter member of the Hoisington 
Historical Society and a founding and lifetime member of the Clara 
Barton Hospital Foundation. Don enjoyed and was an accomplished 
woodworker.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years; Janet Boese of the home; a 
daughter, Barbara Buchanan (Andy) of Jackson, Georgia; and a son, Brad 
Boese of Hoisington; five granddaughters, Kristin, Audrey, Samantha, 
Amanda and Elizabeth; and six great grandchildren, Gage, Ella, Makenna, 
C.J., James, and Olivia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter-in-law, Jayne Boese, and two sisters, Ileen Hanhardt and LaVern Huddleston.

Family will greet friends at 2:00 p.m., Friday, April 22, 2022, at 
the funeral home and a graveside service will follow at Hoisington

Arlene Bird, 87, of Quinter, Kansas went to her heavenly home to join Jesus, her Lord and Savior, on Friday, April 15, 2022. Arlene was born on October 9,&nbsp;1934,&nbsp;at home on a farm north of Quinter, Kansas, to Samuel and Gladys Brown Coburn.&nbsp;

She grew up with two brothers, David and Sammie, and had two brothers, Gerald and Edward, who both died in infancy. She had a sister-in-law, Glenva, who was a sister in heart.

Arlene accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age&nbsp;at her mother's knee. She couldn't remember a time when she didn't pray as her mother taught her while she cuddled her. Arlene was baptized at the age of 12 and always felt God's hand on her life, leading her to help others&nbsp;and to&nbsp;pour out her heart, emotions, and gifts for others. In one of her journals&nbsp;from&nbsp;May&nbsp;1987, she wrote "The lilacs smell so sweet! They just permeate the air as one walks past. What I want my life to be to all those around me, a sweet fragrance to God." Arlene's life verse is Romans 8:28, "And we know that in all things God works&nbsp;for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

As a child, Arlene was known as being athletic, the first to be chosen for teams. She loved to read. Her favorite gifts were books, of which&nbsp;Black Beauty&nbsp;was especially memorable because it also addressed her love of horses. She told of riding her horse to school in grade school, one occasion resulting in a broken collarbone.&nbsp;

How Arlene loved animals, especially cats, enjoying many house cats and farm cats. Her favorite hideout was the haystack, and she loved jumping in the wheat in the grainery. Her favorite time of year was the fall, probably because that season held her birthday.&nbsp;

Arlene grew up feeling so cherished and was blessed to be raised near her Uncle Walter and Aunt Emma Ulrich and cousins, Gerald and Joyce. She was also very close to her other Coburn aunts and uncles who visited frequently but lived further away.&nbsp;

In high school, Arlene excelled in all her classes and enjoyed being in Kayettes, Pep Club, and&nbsp;the weekly Bible Study in the basement of the high school. Her favorite teachers taught her a love for poetry and history and to be glad she was a girl. She graduated from Quinter High School in 1952.

Arlene's parents gave her permission to marry Glenn Raymond Bird, at the age of 17, before he was to leave for Korea. They were married on a beautiful day, January 30, 1952, at her parents' home surrounded by family and close friends so her bedridden mother could participate. Arlene and Glenn were very blessed to celebrate 70 years of marriage earlier this year. After Glenn returned from the Korean War, they welcomed four children to their loving home: Glenna Rae, Melony, Scott, and Stacey.

Arlene was a farmer’s wife and a Proverbs 31 woman, establishing a welcoming and happy home, andassisting and supporting Glenn with outdoor lawn and field work and farm errands. She was known for her bountiful flower and vegetable gardens, which she shared with others, used in cooking her delicious meals, and preserved by&nbsp;canning and freezing for future needs. She always took hot meals to the harvest fields and prepared plentiful meals every day for family and farmhands. Her children remember coming home from school to homemade bread, pies, cookies, cakes, and hot glazed donuts all over the kitchen counter. A gifted&nbsp;seamstress, she sewed clothing, quilts, blankets, and more for her children, grandchildren, and friends, in addition to providing sewn items for church bazaars, etc.

Arlene loved music, teaching piano lessons to over 55 children and adults, and enjoyed praising God as a church pianist and musician in the Quinter United Methodist Church and His Place. It was a common sight to see grandchildren sitting beside Grammy as she played piano or organ. During Arlene's&nbsp;last days in the&nbsp;hospital, she enjoyed hearing her daughter-in-law Sheryl play her keyboard and her husband, children, and their spouses singing hymns and praise songs.&nbsp;

A student of God's word, Arlene taught Sunday School and Bible School, and led or participated in many church committees, boards, and retreats. She loved the United Methodist Women (UMW) and organizing the prayer chain. She also loved opening their home for Bible studies over decades. As a prayer warrior, she prayed daily with and for her family, friends, prayer buddies, and pastors. When she learned of any prayer request or need, she did not delay but immediately prayed whether on the telephone or street corner.

She was known as a leader in the community, serving as Republican Party chairwoman and hospital endowment foundation board member, among other positions. She worked to obtain contributions to support various non-profit organizations and was so generous with her time and resources.&nbsp;

The Valhalla Club was very special to Arlene as was spending time with her lifelong friends. In their earlier years, Arlene and Glenn enjoyed square dancing, playing cards, and visiting friends. In their later years, they enjoyed meeting with new and old friends at the Quinter Senior Center.&nbsp;

When those in the community prematurely lost their parents, she became their adopted mother. She made many encouraging phone calls and sent letters and cards tirelessly. The needs of others&nbsp;were always a higher priority than her own. Even through many hospital stays and until the end, her concern was always for the comfort and wellness of&nbsp;others. An inspiration to many, Arlene always had a compliment and encouraging word for everyone.&nbsp;

After Arlene's diagnosis of lupus, heart issues and other ailments, she chose to overcome and turn them into a way to encourage others with similar problems.

Arlene deeply loved and treasured time with her family. She was an active supporter of her children and their activities. Her grandchildren talk of wonderful memories of their time with Grammy–sitting on her lap reading books, enjoying cousin time, exploring Horsethief Canyon, looking for rocks and fossils, playing games, reveling in holiday times, participating in crafts and activities, coloring and hiding Easter eggs, savoring their favorite foods, shopping together, and raiding the "candy drawer."

Arlene has excelled in so many roles — as wife, mother,&nbsp;Grammy, great&nbsp;Grammy, daughter, sister, cousin, confidante, encourager, prayer warrior, teacher, student, gardener, seamstress, volunteer, leader, musician, role model, inspirer, encourager, and friend.&nbsp;She has had a full life of loving and living.&nbsp;

The compassion, generosity, patience, and kindness she extended to all she met were a perfect reflection of her loving spirit and commitment to her faith in Jesus Christ. This is best expressed in her testimony: "Through Jesus, all the dimensions of my life are richer and deeper. I am a better woman, wife, mother, grandmother. Yes, better in all dimensions of my life. Jesus walks with me always and adds LIFE to my life, for He lives. Praise God!"

Glenn David&nbsp;Staab, 66, Hays, died Saturday, April 16, 2022, at Via Christi Village.

He was born May 18, 1955, in Hays,&nbsp;the son of&nbsp;Roger and Verla (Kreutzer) Staab and was the first of five children.&nbsp;&nbsp;He graduated from Hays High School&nbsp;in the&nbsp;class of 1973.&nbsp;&nbsp;Glenn married Dottie Marie Stephens on July 4, 1975, and they brought four children into the world: Justin David (1980,&nbsp;deceased), Craig Anthony (1982), Kevin Richard (1984), and Michelle Renee (1985).

Glenn was an active member in many political, social, community, and volunteer organizations.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a man who cared deeply about his community, and always had a willingness to go out of his way to help others.&nbsp;&nbsp;Many met Glenn through his occupations in insurance and real estate, or his active involvement in state and local politics, but those were typically just beginning chapters to what would become lifelong friendships.&nbsp;&nbsp;Friends were a close second to what he loved most - his family.&nbsp;&nbsp;Anyone who knew Glenn was likely to know about his brothers and sister, nieces and nephews, kids, grandchildren, and of course, his soulmate Dottie.&nbsp;&nbsp;These were treasures in life he valued more than anything.&nbsp;&nbsp;While the passing of Glenn is painful because of the many lives he positively touched and impacted, he would not want his death to be mourned, but rather his life to be celebrated.&nbsp;&nbsp;Pass along a story, share an old joke, or recollect a memory you have of Glenn that made your life better.

Survivors include his wife Dottie&nbsp;of Hays, two sons:&nbsp;Craig Staab and wife Trish and their daughters Kenadeeand&nbsp;Karsyn&nbsp;and son Holden, all of Spring Hill&nbsp;and&nbsp;Kevin Staab and wife Kori and daughter Lydia, all of Lawrence,&nbsp;a daughter:&nbsp;Michelle Staab&nbsp;of Overland Park, three brothers:&nbsp;Lyle&nbsp;Staab&nbsp;and wife Marilyn&nbsp;of Overland Park,&nbsp;Dale&nbsp;Staab&nbsp;and wife Steph&nbsp;of Hays, and Mark Staab and wife&nbsp;Missie&nbsp;of Allen, TX, and a sister: 1985 Hays High Homecoming Queen Terri (Staab)&nbsp;Hamel&nbsp;and husband Kyle&nbsp;of Gilbert, AZ, and&nbsp;many other family members, including nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents:&nbsp;Roger&nbsp;and Verla Staab,&nbsp;father and&nbsp;mother&nbsp;in-law:&nbsp;Neal and Helen Stephens, and son Justin.&nbsp;&nbsp;We find comfort knowing Glenn is reunited with the friends and family members who passed before him, and are certain his distinctive laugh blends perfectly with the voices of the saints and angels.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 7, 2022, at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, with Fr. Earl&nbsp;Befort&nbsp;officiating. &nbsp;Inurnment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. &nbsp;Visitation will be from 9:30 am until service time. &nbsp;

Muriel Ann Miars, 89, of Oakley, KS, passed away at Logan County Senior Living, on April 1, 2022. 
She was born to Dwight and Sarah Gilbert in Hanks, North Dakota on 
January 20, 1933. She was the youngest of 11 children. She was 
previously married to Kenneth Edwards of Kalispell, MT and Charles Miars
 (dec. 1978) and found her life partner in Rex Asbridge Sr. (dec. 2005).
 
She and her 4 children spent many years traveling around Idaho, Montana,
 Oregon, and Colorado before moving to Kansas and eventually settling in
 Oakley in 1976. 
Muriel loved listening to country music and square dancing, she actually
 met her husband Charles while out square dancing and they fell in love 
and got married. She also enjoyed embroidery and camping. However, her 
favorite thing was spending time with her family and friends, especially
 her myriad of grandchildren. Her house was always full of people, and 
you could always count on finding some yummy treat, as she was forever 
cooking. She enjoyed feeding people and the more the better. 
Muriel was preceded in death by both her parents; 7 siblings; her 
husband Charles Miars; life partner Rex Asbridge, Sr. and her daughter 
Marjorie Ann. 
She is survived by her 4 children, Rose (Dale) Wilcox, Dale (Pam) 
Edwards, Mary (Rex, Jr.) Asbridge, and Raymond Edwards; 6 stepchildren, 
Kathy (Terry) Dunn, Karen (Bill) Williams, Rex (Mary) Asbridge, Jr., 
Charles Asbridge, Loretta (Dwayne) Ogden and Juania (Kelly Sichard)

Darlene Ann Brungardt Holzmeister was born September 29, 1931, at St. Joseph Hospital in Hays, Kansas. She passed from this life on Saturday, April 16, 2022, at Hays Medical Center. Darlene was the youngest of nine children born to John and Magdalena (Mermis) Brungardt, who lived in rural Russell County, Kansas. She was the only one of the children to be born in a hospital. At age six, Darlene and her family left the farm and moved to Hays. She graduated from Hays High School and then graduated from beauty college in Wichita, Kansas. While in Wichita, Darlene also met her husband, Edwin Holzmeister. They were married in Hays on August 27, 1951. The couple were blessed with five sons and one daughter. Darlene was a talented artist. She painted with both acrylics and oils. Darlene and her brother, Lawrence, were once honored to display some of their work at Farmers State Bank in Hays. Darlene also loved to knit, sew, crochet and quilt. Darlene always had two or three “projects” going at any one time. Darlene was also a fabulous cook. Due to her mother’s health, Darlene started cooking for the family as a rather young girl, and she kept getting better and better. There was nothing she could not make, and she could feed a crowd. Just ask her kids and grandkids, and all of their friends. Darlene was a homemaker, ran a daycare, and operated Holzmeister Shoe Repair (1974-1994) and Holzmeister Liquor Store (1978-1998) alongside her husband, Edwin. Darlene and Ed retired when they sold the liquor store. Darlene and Ed were heavily involved for years with the American Legion and Auxiliary. Darlene served as the Sixth District President of Kansas Legion Auxiliary from 1978-1979. During that year, Darlene and the Sixth District Commander of the Legion, Melroy Kopsa of Cuba, Kansas, hosted their District Homecoming in Hays. Ed was able to book a big 18-piece band from Czechoslovakia from behind the Iron Curtain for the homecoming dance. The dance sold out and everyone had a fantastic time. It was always a treasured memory and a great example of how Darlene and Ed always worked and had fun together. Darlene and Ed loved to travel and dance. They loved to camp at Wilson Lake with their children and friends. In 1987, Darlene and Ed purchased a cabin at Cedar Bluff Lake where they spent countless hours and regularly entertained family and friends. So many great memories! Darlene was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Lioba Weigel and Celeste Herman; and brothers James Brungardt, Leo Brungardt, George Brungardt, Lawrence Brungardt, Tom Brungardt, and Donald Brungardt. Darlene is survived by her husband, Edwin of Hays; daughter, Susan &nbsp;(Shirley Grecian) Holzmeister of Hays; and sons, Ivan (Charlene) Holzmeister of Hays, Kevin (Chris) Holzmeister Hays, Tom (Julie) Holzmeister of &nbsp;Lawrenceville, Ga, Greg (Miriam) Holzmeister of Gypsum, KS, and Eric Holzmeister of &nbsp;Hays; grandchildren, Adele Runge, Brock Holzmeister, Greyson Holzmeister, Miranda Stein, Andrea Holzmeister, Brieanna Holzmeister, Brandon Holzmeister, Shannon Brandenburg, Madison Holzmeister, Dylan Holzmeister, Austin Holzmeister, Nathan Holzmeister, Rachel Byarlay, and Victoria Jones; five great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews and her beloved pets Lilly and Tinker. Henry Thomas Shirk, age 51, of Hays, Kansas passed away Thursday, April 14, 2022, at Hays Medical Center. He was born May 2, 1970, in WaKeeney, Kansas, to Thomas Henry and Connie (Augustine) Shirk. Henry graduated from Hays High School. In his late teens Henry enlisted in the military where he was diagnosed with the early symptoms of Myotonic Muscular Dystrophy. Henry was able to work in fast food for some time before his condition prevented him from working. Henry was a Dallas Cowboys fan and enjoyed watching TV and movies. He was extremely introverted but was known to never forget to send a birthday card to his family members including nieces and nephews. Henry is survived by his mother and stepfather, Connie and Terry Jones of Woodward, Oklahoma, three brothers, Robert Shirk and wife Misty of Springfield, Missouri, Douglas Shirk and John Shirk both of Woodward; and a sister, Brenda McCray of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Henry Thomas Shirk

Maggi Watson’s reign as Lund Family Matriarch and Kansas’ Oldest Bowler 
came to an end on Saturday, April 2, 2022, at her home in Wichita, 
Kansas, where she lived independently until her last breath at 102. 
 Margaret "Maggi" Lund Watson was born July 23, 1919, in Ensign, 
Kansas to Clarence Jeffrey (CJ) and Ruth Crockett Lund. She was welcomed
 by her older brother, John and sister, Bernice and they were raised on 
the family wheat farm. She attended a one room schoolhouse and was 
valedictorian of her high school class. 
 She graduated from Fort Hays Kansas State College and pledged a 
sorority that merged with Delta Zeta and lived the sisterhood for almost
 80 years. Although a social sorority, the primary DZ philanthropy is

San Antonio. She dedicated herself to her Occupational Therapist career
 at the Veterans Hospital and delayed marriage until the age of 40. She
 married Norman Watson on Valentine’s Day 1960 and together they shared 
fifty-four years of traveling the world and explored most of the United 
States. 
 She actively belonged to Bridge Club, Bowling League, First 
Methodist Church and Delta Zeta until her death, so she was obviously 
spry, lively, mentally alert and quite active her entire 102 years. At

came to an end on Saturday, April 2, 2022, at her home in Wichita, 
Kansas, where she lived independently until her last breath at 102. 
 Margaret "Maggi" Lund Watson was born July 23, 1919, in Ensign, 
Kansas to Clarence Jeffrey (CJ) and Ruth Crockett Lund. She was welcomed
 by her older brother, John and sister, Bernice and they were raised on 
the family wheat farm. She attended a one room schoolhouse and was 
valedictorian of her high school class. 
 She graduated from Fort Hays Kansas State College and pledged a 
sorority that merged with Delta Zeta and lived the sisterhood for almost
 80 years. Although a social sorority, the primary DZ philanthropy is 
focused on the hearing impaired. At the time of her death, she was the 
oldest Delta Zeta from Fort Hays, as well as the nation. At some point

Paula Jean Haskett went home to be with Jesus on April 14, 2022, at the age of 59.  Paula was born on June 6, 1962, to Sterling and Pauline Bagby, and from the very beginning, her life was an adventure; arriving six weeks early, the doctor gave Sterling the decision to save baby Paula, or Pauline. Instead of choosing, Sterling insisted that the doctor “go save them both!”; in that moment, the incredible spark in her soul was ignited. Paula adored growing up with her two older brothers Steve and Bob in the family home that was directly above the drive-in theatre in Stockton, KS. A few years later, on her 19th birthday, Paula married the love of her life, Nick Haskett.  From this union they birthed two children, Eli and Nicole. Years later, due to God’s providence and their overflowing love, they took in and adopted their young niece Sammie, whom they raised and cherished as their own.

Nick and Paula’s home was a community hub for the kids, their classmates, friends, extended family or anyone who needed a safe place to land.  The house was always full of a crowd, and often included people they barely knew. And of course, everyone was always welcome at their table for the best home cooking they’d ever had.

Throughout the years, Paula became a staple in the community. She owned and operated the Majestic Theatre in Phillipsburg for over fourteen years, where she was known for holding New Years Eve movie parties and designing movie-themed parade floats. She also dove head-first into many other activities, including a fourteen-year-long season as Boy Scout Master. Paula’s church involvement was broad, impactful, and always held her greatest devotion: She served as the Sunday School Superintendent at Pleasant Green Assembly of God, and helped pioneer the Wednesday night Missionettes program that continues to this day at Heartland Worship Center. After her career with the theatre, Paula became a school bus driver, and later a Para professional. All of this, while her ministry continued as Children’s Pastor at Heartland Worship Center, relentlessly loving kids and creating young leaders. She enjoyed “her kids” in every role she fulfilled, whether on the bus, in the classroom, or at church.  When Halloween came around, you would find Paula dressed up as a hippie, mime, backwoods country hillbilly, or even a mad scientist running the halls of the school. She would do anything to give the kids a happy day.   

A true world changer in every season of her life, Paula poured love into the lives of everyone around her. In her eyes, each person she met and every job that she held was another opportunity to care about someone. A life coach by nature, she tutored countless youth to help them reach their goals; whether it was with Boy Scouts, earning a high school diploma, or cultivating a passion for children’s ministry, Paula diligently worked with her own kids, and countless others in the community, through all their achievements.  Everyone who knew Paula quickly realized how she always believed in their potential, and greatness…often before they believed in it for themselves.

Paula had an authentic and uniquely personal relationship with everyone. She loved her friends, co-workers, church kids, nieces &amp; nephews, siblings, and in-laws, all were special to her.  But a new kind of love was sparked in her heart once she became a Nana; her greatest joys in life were her grandkids – Avalee, Paelyn, Emmie, Levi, Ryker, Everly, Cole (aka “George”), and Henry.  Moments with them were precious to her, and she used every opportunity she had to lavish them with love and care. Given the option, each grandchild would gladly have chosen to live with Nana and Pops, full-time.

Having never met a stranger, Paula’s vibrant presence in every room and her endlessly-giving heart made it clear to everyone that she was special, earning her the title of “Aunt Paula” to many. A genuine, passionate love for Jesus, and the joy that comes from having a relationship with Him, were a continuous flow out of her heart. Even after her cancer diagnosis, Paula’s unshakeable faith defined her, as she resolutely accepted any and every possible outcome with peace, and confidence in Him. True to her nature, in the moment Paula learned that her cancer was no longer treatable, she bravely announced to the room “well, off to the next adventure”.  She knew that if her time on earth was short, she was closer than ever to her heavenly home. It was that relentless, Jesus-driven optimism during her battle with cancer that made her last months so remarkable; and in the truest example of a husband’s love, the way Nick walked hand-in-hand with Paula through every step of their journey was an inspiration to their family, and to everyone who witnessed it.

Never wanting to give up on her goals, Paula diligently carved out time during her years of treatment to complete her college degree, just weeks before her promotion to heaven. Paula Haskett lived life with an intense spark, uncontainable joy and overflowing regard for others, to her last day. Those who loved her can honor her best by spreading kindness and loving the way she did…just like Jesus.

Paula’s survivors include husband Nick Haskett; children Eli and Melody Haskett, Sammie and JD Washington, Nicole and Nathan Spar; eight grandchildren; brother Bob and wife Bridget Bagby, as well as brother Steve and wife LeAnn Bagby; many nieces and nephews, and countless others she touched in this life.

Funeral services will be held Wed., April 20, at 10:00 a.m in the Heartland Worship Center, Agra, with Rev. J.D. Washington &amp; Rev. Chris Baker officiating. The service will be streamed live on the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel Facebook page. Burial will follow in the Haskett Cemetery.

Paula Jean Haskett

Katherine M. Sinclair Hayes, 103, passed away Friday, April 15, 2022, at Ascension Living Via Christi Village, Wichita, KS.

She was born April 12, 1919, the fourth of eight children, to John 
Alexander and Katherine Louise Deatz Sinclair in western Hodgeman County
 Kansas.

Early education was at the Laurel School; she graduated Jetmore High 
School in 1938.&nbsp; She and Will “Bill” Dawson Hayes were married September
 21, 1941 in Dodge City. He passed away October 29, 1992.

Katherine was keenly interested in genealogy and travel centered on 
researching family history.&nbsp; She was a caregiver to others in times of 
need as well as a gardener and quilter, piecing and hand quilting a 
blanket for each of her children, grandchildren and great 
grandchildren.&nbsp; Harvests from her gardens were shared with many.

Katherine was a member of the United Methodist Church, Hodgeman 
County Genealogy Society, belonged to the Four Square Homemaker’s Home 
Demonstration Club, and was a past Worthy Matron in the Order of Eastern
 Star, all of Jetmore.

Survivors include: two sons, Mike (Marceile) Hayes, Derby, KS and 
Brit (Lisa) Hayes, Jetmore, KS; two daughters, Joan Fox, Wichita, KS and
 Crystal (Gary) Hinman, Eudora, KS.&nbsp; seven grandchildren, Michelle 
Johnston, Brad Hayes, Jerad Hayes, Sarah Hinman, Wes Hinman, Kasey 
Buffo, &nbsp;Josie Hayes and twelve great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, siblings (Frances,
 Audrey, Jack, Paul, Doris, &nbsp;Don and Loren Sinclair) and one grandchild 
(Todd Carlton).

Katherine M. Sinclair Hayes

Twila M. Ellis, 85, died on Friday, March 25, 2022, at Lakepoint Nursing
 &amp; Rehabilitation Center in Wichita. She was born on August 25, 
1936, at Dighton the daughter of Lawrence Benjamin &amp; Vivian Velma 
(Proctor) Walter. She married Raymond Lee Ellis on June 14, 1953, at 
Dighton. He died on February 14, 2015. 
Most of her school years were in Dighton and she graduated from Dighton 
High School with the Class of 1954. She was a homemaker for many years 
before going to work outside of the home, for ALCO and then at Fidelity 
State Bank retiring as a Vice-President and Branch Manager. Twila was a 
member of several organizations including Finney Co. RSVP; the Senior 
Association; the Eagles Auxiliary and served on the FCCA Board for 
several years plus she worked with 4-H Leaders, HDU units and many bank 
related organizations. Twila loved her family and spent as much time 
with them as possible. She had three hobbies that she loved and spent 
hours at, collecting butterflies, eggs, and sunflowers. She loved to 
garden and simply be around people. 
She is survived by her 3 Sons- Craig and his wife Barb of Wichita, Doug 
and his wife Sandi of Ingalls and J.D. and his wife Lori of Topeka, 
Daughter- Nancy Dahlinger and her husband Eric of Wichita, 12 
Grandchildren: 15 Great-Grandchildren and 1 Great-Great Grandchild along
 with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents;
 husband; her brother Larry Joe Walter; her sister Susan Walter Lewis 
and a Granddaughter- Kimbra Ellis Hahn. 
Memorial Service will be at 10:30 AM Saturday April 23, 2022, at Garnand

 &amp; Rehabilitation Center in Wichita. She was born on August 25, 
1936, at Dighton the daughter of Lawrence Benjamin &amp; Vivian Velma 
(Proctor) Walter. She married Raymond Lee Ellis on June 14, 1953, at 
Dighton. He died on February 14, 2015. 
Most of her school years were in Dighton and she graduated from Dighton 
High School with the Class of 1954. She was a homemaker for many years 
before going to work outside of the home, for ALCO and then at Fidelity 
State Bank retiring as a Vice-President and Branch Manager. Twila was a 
member of several organizations including Finney Co. RSVP; the Senior 
Association; the Eagles Auxiliary and served on the FCCA Board for 
several years plus she worked with 4-H Leaders, HDU units and many bank 
related organizations. Twila loved her family and spent as much time 
with them as possible. She had three hobbies that she loved and spent 
hours at, collecting butterflies, eggs, and sunflowers. She loved to 
garden and simply be around people. 
She is survived by her 3 Sons- Craig and his wife Barb of Wichita, Doug 
and his wife Sandi of Ingalls and J.D. and his wife Lori of Topeka, 
Daughter- Nancy Dahlinger and her husband Eric of Wichita, 12 
Grandchildren: 15 Great-Grandchildren and 1 Great-Great Grandchild along
 with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents;
 husband; her brother Larry Joe Walter; her sister Susan Walter Lewis 
and a Granddaughter- Kimbra Ellis Hahn. 
Memorial Service will be at 10:30 AM Saturday April 23, 2022, at Garnand 
Funeral Home in Garden City. The service will be Facebook Live on the 
Garnand Funeral Home facebook page. Burial will be in Valley View 
Cemetery in Garden City. Memorials are suggested to Garden City Eagles

Hollie Lynn Kendall passed away Thursday, April 14, 2022, in Phillips County, Kansas, at the age of 49.

She was born February 21, 1973, in Norton, Kansas, the daughter of Dennis L. and Carolyn Ann (Wilson) Rumbaugh.

Hollie was united in marriage to Dustin A. Kendall on December 11, 2013, in Las Vegas, NV.  He survives.

Other survivors include her mother Carolyn Rumbaugh of Phillipsburg; brother Bruce Rumbaugh and wife Shawnda of Hays, KS; and sister Jennie Christensen of Phillipsburg.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2022, at the Huck Boyd Community Center in Phillipsburg with Pastor Brant Rice officiating.  The services will be streamed live on the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel Facebook page.  Interment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Wayne Everette Johnston, age 70, of Ellis, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2022, in Ellis. He was born July 17, 1951, in Goodland, Kansas to Howard and Betty (Winters) Johnston.&nbsp; On October 14, 1972, he married Marilyn Louise Boschowitzki at St. John Lutheran Church.

Wayne was a long-time roofing contractor with the family business, Johnston Roofing starting in McCracken, Kansas then to Pueblo, Colorado and ending up in Ellis. Wayne also became a farmer having taken over the family farm in rural Ellis. Wayne enjoyed fishing, Classic Hot Rods, traveling with Marilyn, and time with his granddaughter, Meredith. Wayne was an avid animal lover especially his two favorite dogs, Buddy, and Bandit.&nbsp; Wayne as his family and friends knew enjoyed a good debate, bargaining and dickering.&nbsp;

Wayne is survived by his wife, Marilyn of Ellis; a son, Lyle Johnston of Ellis; a daughter, Tina Douglas and husband John of Ellis; a brother, Don Johnston of Derby, Kansas; three sisters, Donetta McCullugh of Fairbanks, Alaska, Hope Myers of Hillsboro, Oregon and Marie Adams; and three grandchildren, Meredith Johnston of Ellis, Brody Douglas of Hampton, Virginia and Sheila Douglas of Augusta, Kansas.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; a half-brother, Stanley Drumwright and a sister, Ruth Jackson.

Funeral services will be&nbsp;11:00 AM Monday, April 18, 2022, at Keithley Funeral Chapel 400 E. 17th&nbsp;Ellis, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Wayne Everette Johnston

Rogena Lavell Randall, 84, died April 12, 2022, at Denver Hospice Care
 Center in Denver, Colorado.&nbsp; She was born on September 8, 1937, in 
Cimarron, the daughter of Norman and Neva Mills Belt.

Rogena went to school in Cimarron until she and her family moved to 
Sublette, where her family ran an appliance store. During her teenage 
years, her parents owned a movie theater in Satanta; where her dad ran 
the projector, her mom ran the ticket booth, and she ran the concession 
stand. Rogena graduated from Sublette High School in 1955, and then 
moved to Dodge City to attend Wilcox Beauty Academy; where she graduated
 in December of 1955. She worked at Mabels Beauty Shop in Sublette until
 her marriage to Doyal Brunson in 1956 and they moved to Garden City. 
Rogena worked until starting her family and then began staying home with
 their three children; Terri, Todd, and Tami, as well as babysitting her
 brother Karl and niece Jena. She later went back to work in a beauty 
shop. In 1976, the family moved to Dodge City, where Rogena worked in 
the beauty shop, and eventually owned her own shop, Scissor Palace. She 
and Doyal later divorced. In 1985 she married Robert L. Randall and 
moved to Ulysses where she worked until moving back to Dodge in 1998 
where she retired.

Rogena loved to do crafts, sew, and was active in quilting. She also loved to play bingo.

She was a member of Miss Kitty Quilters. Rogena was also a member of 
the Oasis Church in Dodge City. She loved the Lord; her hope was to see 
all her loved ones in Heaven one day.

Rogena is survived by her daughter, Terri Quint and her husband Danny
 of Northfield, Minnesota; son, Todd Brunson of Dodge City; daughter in 
law, Lori Brunson of Salina; son in law, Marvin Jantz of Greensburg; 
step daughter, Debbie Andrasek of Great Bend; step son, Duane Randall 
and wife Natalia of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; 12 grandchildren; several 
great grandchildren; sister, Janet Zimmerman of Fort Dodge; brother, 
Karl Belt and wife Lisa of Andover; as well as numerous nieces and 
nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Norman and Neva; 
husband, Robert Randall; and daughter, Tami Jantz.

Funeral service will be held at Swaim Funeral Chapel in Dodge City on
 Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at 1:00 PM with Jay Morford presiding.&nbsp;

Cirila Vallesviuda-De Flores

Dalton Michael Ellis, 25, of Colby, died Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at 
Swedish Medical Center, Englewood, CO. He was born October 23, 1996, in 
Colby, KS, to Gregory Ellis and Tonya Yonkey. 
Growing up, Dalton loved to help on the family farm and work with the 
cows, pigs, horses and llama. He enjoyed shooting sports and 
participated in 4-H and FFA. During the summers he worked in St. 
Francis, doing plumbing. Dalton graduated from Colby High School in 2015
 and from Northwest Kansas Technical College, in Goodland, in 2017. He 
then worked at Hoxie Implement for two years, then transferred to his 
current job, at Oakley Ag, in 2019. 
Dalton was a happy-go-lucky guy, who would do anything for you. He had a
 great sense of humor and loved going out to eat with friends. Dalton 
lived to spend time with his family and friends. 
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Royce and Claudia Yonkey and Larry and Donna Ellis. 
He is survived by his parents; brother Paden Ellis; and numerous aunts, uncles, and friends.

Colby United Methodist Church, with burial in Beulah Cemetery, Colby.

 </figure>Dalton Michael Ellis, 25, of Colby, died Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at 
Swedish Medical Center, Englewood, CO. He was born October 23, 1996, in 
Colby, KS, to Gregory Ellis and Tonya Yonkey. 
Growing up, Dalton loved to help on the family farm and work with the 
cows, pigs, horses and llama. He enjoyed shooting sports and 
participated in 4-H and FFA. During the summers he worked in St. 
Francis, doing plumbing. Dalton graduated from Colby High School in 2015
 and from Northwest Kansas Technical College, in Goodland, in 2017. He 
then worked at Hoxie Implement for two years, then transferred to his 
current job, at Oakley Ag, in 2019. 
Dalton was a happy-go-lucky guy, who would do anything for you. He had a
 great sense of humor and loved going out to eat with friends. Dalton 
lived to spend time with his family and friends. 
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Royce and Claudia Yonkey and Larry and Donna Ellis.
