Donald Max “Don” Heller, 91, of Salina, Kan., passed away on Sunday, 
April 10, 2022. He was born on August 26, 1930, in rural Almena, Kan., 
to Oscar and Osa (Boatman) Heller. He was baptized at St. George 
Episcopal Church, Kansas City, Mo. On November 8, 1953, Don and Carol 
Jean Kelly were united in marriage in Norton, Kan.

Don was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1950 and served in the Korean 
War. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and member of the American 
Legion for more than 60 years. Don was the owner/operator of Amark 
Printing in Salina form 1962-2017. He enjoyed dancing and was a member 
of the Lincoln Continental Car Club and Salina Antique Car Club.

Don is survived by his wife, Carol; daughters, Marlene Edwards 
(Dennis), Sundance, Wyo., Marilyn Rose (Paul), Palmetto, Fla., and 
Martha Smith, Salina; four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and sisters, Helen Maxine Archer-Bean and Betty Jean Pfeifer.

A private service and burial will be held at Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Dignity Care Home or 
Kindred Hospice or Christ Cathedral Episcopal Church, in care of Ryan 
Mortuary, Salina.

Arthur "Art" Dohl, age 74, of Sylvan Grove, KS, died Wednesday, April 13, 2022. 
 He was born on August 18, 1947, in Lucas, Kansas, the son of Herman 
and Arlene (Blasé) Dohl. He attended Bethlehem Lutheran School from 
grades 1- 8. He graduated, as a Jayhawk, Valedictorian of the class of 
1965, from Sylvan Grove High School. He attended Bethany College in 
Lindsborg, KS, to play football and baseball, and graduated with a BS 
degree in English and a minor in Mathematics. 
 During his senior year of college, he met his future wife, Justine 
Nielsen. Upon graduation, he joined the Air Force and attended Officer 
Training School at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX, then proceeded to 
Williams AFB in Chandler, AZ, with his wife and first child, 
Christopher. After tearing his knee ligament, he became a missile launch
 officer at McConnell AFB in Wichita, KS. Soon two more children, Jason
 and Chesley, were born. 
 In 1972, as the Vietnam War wound down, the Air Force offered an 
early out. Art moved to Sylvan Grove with his wife and three children. 
For the next 50 years, he took to tradition and became a 4th-generation 
farmer on the family farm southeast of Sylvan Grove in Vesper Township. 
 While farming in Sylvan Grove, Art and Justine, added three more 
children, Lyle, Madelyn and Esther, to their family. In June of 2021, 
Art and Justine celebrated 52 years of marriage.
 A 15-year battle with cancer never diminished Art’s enthusiasm for 
life. He remained devoted to his family, his grandchildren, his love of
 music and singing, and his community and church. He enjoyed chess and 
card playing, reading, grilling for the community, laughing and 
conversing with family and friends. Arthur died in his home surrounded 
by his family. 
 His parents, Herman and Arlene Dohl, and infant sister, Erica, preceded him in death.

Norma Jean (Kuhn) Berens, age&nbsp;85, of Victoria, Kansas, died&nbsp;Thursday, April 14, 2022, at the Good Samaritan Society of Hays. &nbsp;

She was born September 12, 1936, in Emmeram, Kansas, to Leo J. and Catherine (Billinger) Kuhn. &nbsp;She married Vernon L. Berens on December 27, 1961, at Victoria. &nbsp;He preceded her in death on July 21, 2010.

She was an elementary school teacher for 36 years,&nbsp;and taught at the Victoria Grade School for 34 years.&nbsp;She also was a religious Education teacher for the parish&nbsp;at&nbsp;the Victoria Grade&nbsp;school&nbsp;and&nbsp;Norma Jean retired in 1997.

She grew up&nbsp;on the family farm at Emmeram,&nbsp;attended grade school in Emmeram, &nbsp;was a 1953&nbsp;graduate&nbsp;of the Victoria High School, and received her Masters Degree in Elementary Education from Fort Hays State University. &nbsp;

Norma was a cast member of the “Sweet and Sour Kraut” Show,&nbsp;a member of&nbsp;The Basilica of St. Fidelis,&nbsp;St. Fidelis Christian Mothers, St. Fidelis&nbsp;Daughters of Isabella, V.F.W. Auxiliary all of Victoria. &nbsp;She enjoyed&nbsp;embroidering, sewing, gardening, playing the piano, playing cards and her family.

Survivors include her children, Michael Berens, Victoria, KS; Matthew Berens and wife, Alice, Hays, KS; Michelle Berens, Overland Park, KS;&nbsp;her grandchildren,&nbsp;Jenna Berens;&nbsp;Tia Berens; Devin Berens; Hogan Berens; Shelbie Keith and husband, Kevin; Shane&nbsp;Berens and fiancé, Angel Bryant;&nbsp;her step-grandchildren, Maggie James; Emily James; Hannah James; Luke James;&nbsp;her brother, Bill Kuhn and wife, Sheila, Hays, KS; her two sisters, Myra Pinard and Doraleen Laprade, both of Hays, KS.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter, Milissa Rae Berens; her son,&nbsp;Mitch Berens; and her brother-in-law, Jerry Laprade.

Norma Jean (Kuhn) Berens

The services celebrating and honoring the life of Byron Forest 
Carpenter, age 98, of Lake Winnebago, Missouri, formerly of Enid, Okla., will 
be held 10:00 A.M. Tuesday April 19, 2022, in the Brown-Cummings Funeral
 Home. Burial will follow in the Enid Cemetery under the direction of 
Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.

Byron Forest Carpenter died April 12th, 2022, at the home of his 
daughter and son-in-law. He was born July 2nd, 1923, in Donaphin County,
 Kansas.&nbsp; The youngest of James Fredrick and Lucile (Case) Carpenter’s 
five children.&nbsp;

Byron grew up along the Missouri River and told of the adventures he 
had with his brothers.&nbsp; As a young man he loved to partake in 
adventures, but quickly learned the importance of education.&nbsp; He 
attended high school in Webster, Kansas where he graduated Valedictorian
 and met his wife, Twila Buss. &nbsp;They married August 11th,1942, and 
celebrated over 72 years of marriage until her passing December 11th, 
2014. &nbsp;

Byron received his normal training certificate and taught school for 
one year in a one-room schoolhouse, however, his heart was pulled 
towards farming.&nbsp; He and Twila successfully operated their farm for 66 
years.&nbsp; Byron planted his last wheat crop at the age of 85.&nbsp; After 
retiring they moved to Enid, Oklahoma.&nbsp; From there, he moved to the 
Kansas City area and lived the last of his life with his daughter and 
son-in-law at their lake home.&nbsp; Byron enjoyed the last years of his life
 fishing and gardening with his great grandchildren, grandchildren and 
his fishing buddy and favorite son-in-law, Jim.

Byron's Christian faith was always at the forefront of his life.&nbsp; He 
studied and practiced his faith fervently and loved to engage in 
meaningful conversations to gain a deeper understanding of his religion 
throughout the course of his life.

Throughout the course of their lives, Byron and Twila enjoyed 
traveling.&nbsp; They relished in sharing their travel experiences and 
education with their children.&nbsp; They had three adopted children, Bruce, 
Lynn, and Dale that were the most important part of their lives.&nbsp; Byron 
was very active in 4-H, Extension work, and the Federal Land Bank.&nbsp; He 
was extensively involved in Rural Electric in Northwest and Central 
Kansas where he served on the Norton Decatur Rural Electric Board for 43
 years holding multiple offices.&nbsp; He was also on the state Sunflower 
Electric Board for 20 years and the National Rural and Electric Board 
for 10 years. Under the Nixon Administration Byron served on the board 
with the esteemed Secretary of Agriculture.

Byron is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Lynn and James 
Wagner of Lake Winnebago, Missouri and son Dale Carpenter and Julie 
Carpenter of Enid, Oklahoma.&nbsp; He is also survived by his grandchildren 
and great grandchildren: Dr. Jamie Wagner-Berbel and husband Dr. German 
Berbel and sons Gabriel and Jordi of Overland Park, Kansas.&nbsp; Nolyn 
Wagner and wife Dr. Ásdís Finnsdóttir-Wagner and daughters Sólveig Lóa 
and Bryndís Magnea of Overland Park, Kansas. Shannon and husband 
Vladimir Roganovic and daughters Mihaela and Sofija of Overland Park, 
Kansas.&nbsp; Bailee Webster, Kaleb Webster and daughter Hadlee of Enid,

Byron Forest Carpenter

Genevieve Benira Brunk died April 11, 2022, at Hill City, Kansas. Gen 
was born March 23, 1922, to Benjamin Ira Sebaugh and Ethyl Sultana 
(McCormack) in Norcatur, Kansas. She graduated from Norcatur High 
School in 1940, and married Howard Brunk on August 16, 1942, at the 
preacher’s home in Norcatur. 
 	She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard; son 
Gail; daughter Beverly Michaelis; sister Bonnie Rapp; and son-in-law Tom
 Copeland. She is survived by her daughters: Barbara (Wilbur) Stites of
 Wakeeney KS; Jerrilyn (Rich) Manbeck of Gold Canyon AZ; Malea Copeland
 of Arvada CO and son-in-law, Dennis Michaelis of Waco TX. She also 
left a legacy of nine Grandchildren; nine Great-Grandchildren; and four 
Great-Great-Grandchildren.
 	Genevieve nurtured a Christian home by living her faith. She cared
 not only for her family but for friends and neighbors as well. Gen 
volunteered to drive people to out-of-town doctor’s appointments, baked 
cookies for church whenever they needed them, and the list goes on.
 	Gen was also a positive person. Although she met with trials in 
her life, she would find a way to overcome them. She learned how to do 
home dialysis for Howard when his kidneys failed. After he passed, she 
would travel on her own to visit her children and grandchildren. Gen 
then took up several hobbies, but her favorite was painting and late in 
life she took up adult coloring. (She delighted in giving away lots of 
her artwork to family and friends.) 
 	Genevieve was a kind, loving person and will be missed. God blessed those of us who had the joy of knowing her.&nbsp;

Genevieve Benira Brunk died April 11, 2022, at Hill City, Kansas. Gen 
was born March 23, 1922, to Benjamin Ira Sebaugh and Ethyl Sultana 
(McCormack) in Norcatur, Kansas. She graduated from Norcatur High 
School in 1940, and married Howard Brunk on August 16, 1942, at the 
preacher’s home in Norcatur. 
 	She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard; son 
Gail; daughter Beverly Michaelis; sister Bonnie Rapp; and son-in-law Tom

On Wednesday, December 30, 2020, Gerald "Jerry" Benoit,
 after a tough battle with Covid-19 crossed over to be with his Lord and
 rejoin his parents and sister.&nbsp; He was born on January 18, 1951, in

Carol Ann Schlegel, 72, Hays, died Wednesday, April 13, 2022, at HaysMed.

She was born April 25, 1949, in Hays, 
the daughter of Frank and Pauline (Zimmerman) Younker.&nbsp; In 1967, she 
graduated from Marian High School and then attended Fort Hays State 
University where she received an Associate’s Degree.&nbsp; On May 7, 1982, she
 was united in marriage to Myron Lee Schlegel in Munjor, and they were 
married nearly 40 years.&nbsp; For 17 years, Carol worked at Travenol as 
quality control manager, retiring in 1985.&nbsp; She also worked on the 
family farm, where she would reset fence, paint, and help with harvest. 
&nbsp;Her memberships included St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church and the 
St. Nicholas Ladies Guild.&nbsp; She loved baking and cooking, going on 
walks, and animals, especially cats.&nbsp; She also enjoyed Dairy Queen 
treats, going to the movies, and occasionally dining out.&nbsp; Carol was 
always ready to travel, and could make the best of any situation, 
including a 14-hour airport delay.&nbsp; She was a stylish lady who loved 
shopping and was always appreciative of the good in her life, worked 
through the challenges, and let her happiness show through her beautiful
 smile.&nbsp;

Survivors include her husband Myron of 
Hays, mother: Pauline Younker of Munjor, two children: Ken Schlegel and 
Lisa Schlegel, both of Hays, brother: Darold Younker and wife Evelyn of 
Munjor, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Tuesday, April 19, 2022, at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic 
Church with Fr. Damian Richards officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in St.

Daniel Kean Mannion was born the 3rd child of 6 on March 26, 1954, to 
John "Jack" and Joan T. (Tomlin) Mannion in Denver, Colorado.&nbsp; He passed
 away at his home in Kensington, KS on April 8th 2022, at the age of 68. Danny
 grew up in the Aurora and Denver communities. He attended St. Therese 
Catholic School in Aurora until attending high school at Hinkley High in
 Aurora.&nbsp; Danny loved motorcycles and loved tinkering with just about 
anything. Danny worked construction jobs in both Colorado and Kansas.&nbsp; 
He always was proud to say he helped build the Denver Airport. While in 
Kansas he worked several years at Lyon Rock Quarry north of Smith 
Center.&nbsp;&nbsp; Danny was united in marriage to Denise A. Lyon in 
Littleton, Colorado, June 9th 1980. To this marriage were 5 children, 
Jesse, John, Gina, Melissa, and Jake.&nbsp; One of Danny's pride and joys 
were his grandchildren and great grandchildren.&nbsp; He couldn't&nbsp; believe he
 lived to be a great grandfather.&nbsp; Along with being a great grandfather 
he was pleased to have a great grandchild carry on his middle name Kean,
 Fredrick Paul Kean Massey was due on Danny's birthday but came

Donna Marie Stejskal, 73, passed away April 12, 2022, at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City.

She was born February 7, 1949, in Smith Center, Kansas, the daughter of Darrell LaRue and Marjorie Nadine Williams Morgan.

Donna grew up in Smith County, Kansas, after graduating in Smith 
Center she attended Fort Hays State University where she met her 
husband, Thomas Louis Stejskal. They were married August 8, 1970, in 
Hays. After they graduated from Fort Hays State University, they moved 
to Larned, then later moved to Edwards County in the spring of 1977 
where they lived until their retirement.

Donna was a member of the Catholic Church, and after moving to Larned
 became involved in the First Presbyterian Church, Larned. She was a 
longtime member of Franklin FCE, Edwards County Extension Executive 
board, where she served as chairman, FCS PDC, and FCE Council. &nbsp;She was 
very involved in Edwards County 4-H fair events, where she was a fair 
Superintendent and also a project leader. She volunteered at the Santa 
Fe Trail Center and the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital Auxiliary and 
was a member of the Card Club that didn’t have a name, “they just played
 pitch.” Donna was a wonderful cook and baker. She enjoyed planning 
mystery travel trips, going on bus trips, and spending time with her 
friends and family. Her greatest joys were her four grandsons.

Survivors include: daughter, Rebecca “Becky” Marie Stedje, Larned; 
son, Ross Thomas Stejskal, Colby; sister, Ronda Jones, Smith Center; 
brother, Ronald (Alice) Morgan, Smith Center; four grandchildren, 
Brendan Stejskal, Bryson Stejskal, John Stedje, Reed Stedje; and her 
nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Louis Stejskal; her 
parents, Darrell and Marjorie Morgan; and her grandparents, Alva and 
Helen Williams.

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 18, 2022, at First 
Presbyterian Church, Larned, with Pastor Bill and Diane Stapleton 
presiding. Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 
2022, at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Inurnment will be in the Larned 
Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to Santa Fe Trail Center, Edwards County 4-H 
Foundation, or First Presbyterian Church in care of Beckwith Mortuary,

 </figure>Donna Marie Stejskal, 73, passed away April 12, 2022, at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City.She was born February 7, 1949, in Smith Center, Kansas, the daughter of Darrell LaRue and Marjorie Nadine Williams Morgan.Donna grew up in Smith County, Kansas, after graduating in Smith 
Center she attended Fort Hays State University where she met her 
husband, Thomas Louis Stejskal. They were married August 8, 1970, in 
Hays. After they graduated from Fort Hays State University, they moved 
to Larned, then later moved to Edwards County in the spring of 1977 
where they lived until their retirement.Donna was a member of the Catholic Church, and after moving to Larned
 became involved in the First Presbyterian Church, Larned. She was a 
longtime member of Franklin FCE, Edwards County Extension Executive 
board, where she served as chairman, FCS PDC, and FCE Council. &nbsp;She was 
very involved in Edwards County 4-H fair events, where she was a fair 
Superintendent and also a project leader. She volunteered at the Santa 
Fe Trail Center and the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital Auxiliary and 
was a member of the Card Club that didn’t have a name, “they just played
 pitch.” Donna was a wonderful cook and baker. She enjoyed planning 
mystery travel trips, going on bus trips, and spending time with her 
friends and family. Her greatest joys were her four grandsons.Survivors include: daughter, Rebecca “Becky” Marie Stedje, Larned; 
son, Ross Thomas Stejskal, Colby; sister, Ronda Jones, Smith Center; 
brother, Ronald (Alice) Morgan, Smith Center; four grandchildren, 
Brendan Stejskal, Bryson Stejskal, John Stedje, Reed Stedje; and her 
nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Louis Stejskal; her 
parents, Darrell and Marjorie Morgan; and her grandparents, Alva and 
Helen Williams.Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 18, 2022, at First 
Presbyterian Church, Larned, with Pastor Bill and Diane Stapleton 
presiding. Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 
2022, at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Inurnment will be in the Larned

Joseph “Joe” Charles Beatty, age 76, of
 Victoria, Kansas, passed away April 9, 2022. Joe was born November 19, 
1946, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Atwell Charles Beatty and Helen Jessie 
Jewell.

Joe enjoyed, puzzles, watches, radios, 
listening to music, smoking cigarettes, and eating candy bars. He also 
enjoyed watching television, fishing, and his friends. Joe really liked 
receiving big presents. He has received services from Developmental 
Services of Northwest Kansas since September of 1988. Prior to that, he 
resided at Norton State Hospital. When Norton State closed, Joe came to 
DSNWK, Inc., first living in a group home on Marshall Street in Hays. At
 the time of his passing, Joe was living in a DSNWK group home in 
Victoria. Joe had a way of making his choices known, and was a great 
advocate for himself. He was very charismatic and lit up any room he 
entered with his bold, enjoyable personality and a big smile.

He was preceded in death by his 
parents, his sister Agnes and brother James. He also had a sister, 
Hazel. Joe also leaves behind many friends and staff who supported him 
over the years.

Services will be held Friday, April 15,
 2022, at 2:00 PM at Brock’s~Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory, 2509 
Vine, Hays, Kansas.

Joseph 'Joe' Charles Beatty

Neoma M. Tacha was born January 22, 1925, in Council Grove, KS to Joseph 
G. and Marye (Strnad) Kusy. She passed away April 12, 2022, at the Norton
 County Hospital at the age of 97.
 Neoma attended country school in Republic County for two years and 
attended schools in Cuba, Belleville, and Republic, KS before moving to 
Jennings in 1939. She graduated from Jennings Consolidated School in 
1943. 
 Neoma was employed at the Cabusco Defense Plant in Denver during 
WWII. After the war, she attended and graduated from The Charles of 
Denver Beauty Academy. She was then employed by Driscoll Beauty Shop of 
Oberlin for one year. Neoma married Harold “Bob” Tacha in Jennings on 
September 14, 1946. She owned and operated Tacha Beauty Shop in Jennings
 from 1947 to 1991. Neoma and Bob danced through life together and now 
they are again!
 Neoma was a member of the Jennings United Methodist Church, American
 Legion Auxiliary, Royal Neighbors Lodge, and the Tuesday Study Club. 
She served on the Jennings School board, Fire Department, Czech Heritage
 Board, Jennings Pride, and Museum Board. 
 Neoma was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; parents, Joseph 
Kusy and Marye Kusy Flaska; stepfather, Joseph Flaska and brother, 
Willis R. Kusy. She is survived by sons, Roger and wife Peggy of Oakley 
and Royal and wife Gayle of Hoxie and grandchildren: Dustin Tacha and 
wife Jessica and their daughters Madilynn and Emmarie Sue, Ashley Brooks
 and husband Austin and their children Brynna and Ayden Brown, and 
Garrett Tacha and fiancé Sarah and his children Josephine and Tucker 
Tacha. 
 Funeral services will be held 10:30 am Wednesday, April 20, 2022 at 
the Jennings United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Jennings
 Cemetery. Neoma will lie in-state and the book will be available to 
sign from 12-5:00 pm Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at the funeral home.

Bernard G. “Bernie” Rupp, 64, Hays, died Sunday, April 10, 2022, at McPherson Health and Rehab.

He was born June 8, 1957, in Hays, the 
son of Charles M. and Viola F. “Ollie” (Dinkel) Rupp.&nbsp; For over 45 years
 he was an over-the-road truck driver.&nbsp; On October 25, 1975, he was 
united in marriage to Sharon Braun in Victoria.&nbsp; Bernie was hardworking,
 cared for his family, and had a genuine love and concern for everyone 
in his life.&nbsp; He lived every day with gratitude and loved spending time 
with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his mother Ollie Rupp
 of Hays, a son: BJ Rupp and wife Dena of Hays, a daughter: Danielle 
Bornholdt and husband John of Hutchinson, a brother: Vernon Rupp and 
wife Mellisa of Kansas City, MO, and three grandchildren: Laine Werth, 
Kinley Rupp, and Madisyn Rupp.

He was preceded in death by his father Charles and his sister Deborah Ann Marie “Debbie” Rupp.

Trina Detherage, 62, passed away on April 13, 2022, at Clara Barton 
Hospital, Hoisington, Kansas. She was born on July 15, 1959, to Hilbert 
J. &amp; Phyllis Jean (Stone) Herrman. Trina married Brad Detherage in 
Great Bend on March 8, 1991. He survives.

A life-time resident of Great Bend, Trina was the “hostest with the 
mostest” at Granny’s Kitchen and previously worked at CKMC. She enjoyed 
spending time with her grandbabies, camping, fishing, going to the lake,
 antiquing, and Christmas – especially decorating.

Survivors include her husband of the home; three sons, Michael 
Fletcher of Great Bend, K.W. of Ozark, Ark., Chris (Kylee) of Rush 
Center; two daughters, Chassity (Kyle) Roberts and Danielle (Tanner 
Guesnier) Detherage, all of Great Bend; three sisters, Karen Bruno of 
Fla., Stacie (Bruce) Kozlowski of Larned, and Lori Hoffman of St. Louis,
 Mo.; three brothers, Mark (Ginger) Herrman, Tim (Chris) Herrman, all of
 Great Bend, and Scott Herrman of Va.; seven grandbabies that she was 
very proud of, Brett, A.J., Skylar, Maya, Jonas, Vincent and Wyatt; and 
one great-grandbaby, Marley. She is preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will take place Friday, April 15, 2022, from 9:00 a.m. to 
8:00 p.m., with the family receiving guest from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Benjamin Clement Griffin, 86, of LaFayette, Georgia, (formerly of Russell, Kansas) passed away Sunday, April 10, 2022.

Benjamin was born on December 16, 1935, in Bunker Hill, Kansas, the 
son of Roland and Mary (Bostick) Griffin.&nbsp; After high school, he served 
his country by joining the United States Army and fought in the Korean 
War.&nbsp; He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Carol Jean 
Stoppel on October 24, 1964, and from this union they were blessed with 2
 daughters Teresa and Darlene.&nbsp; Carol preceded him in death on July 16, 
1998.&nbsp; He found love a second time and was united in marriage to Barbara
 Baglin on September 6, 2003.&nbsp; He worked in the oil field industry all 
over Kansas and also worked as a truck driver in the 1980’s and retired 
in 1992, after suffering a stroke.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carol Jean Stoppel 
Griffin; daughter, Darlene Marie Henry; and parents, Roland Griffin and 
Mary Bostick Griffin.

Surviving family include his wife, Barbara B. Griffin; daughter, 
Teresa (Eddie) Hegwood; 11 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; 
brother, Stanley Griffin; and several nieces and nephews.

A Graveside services to celebrate Benjamin’s life will be held at 
11:30 a.m. on Friday, April 15, 2022, at the Bunker Hill Cemetery in 
Bunker Hill, Kansas.&nbsp; Family will greet guests and viewing will be held 
from 10 A.M. to 11 A.M. at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in

Phyllis M. Jaco passed away on April 10, 2022, in Hays, Kansas at the 
age of 89. She was born on March 8, 1933, to Morris and Mildred (Stein) 
Mock in Plainville, Kansas. She was united in marriage to Gene Jaco on 
June 17, 1951, at the First Christian Church in Plainville and the 
couple was blessed with three children: Jana, Michael, and Jill.
 Phyllis was a lifelong resident of Plainville where she attended 
school and graduated with the class of 1951. Shortly after high school 
she married Gene and then went to work as a bookkeeper for many years at
 Farm Implement all while being Gene’s right hand woman. She worked the 
farm, helped Gene while he coached for many years, raised her own 
family, and ended up with many extra children who turned to her for 
support, love, and a home. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, 
photography, baking, cooking, fishing and camping. She was very active 
at the First Christian Church as a member of the Dorcas women’s group, 
youth group leader and Sunday school teacher. Above all, Phyllis loved 
to open her home and her life to kids who needed her. She always made 
sure her family, friends, and her “extra” kids were taken care of.
 Phyllis was an extremely kind, caring, and empathetic woman with a 
deep love for her family and friends. Although she will be greatly 
missed, her love and influence will remain in all our hearts. May her 
legacy inspire each of us to encourage one another, cherish the ties 
that bind and live to serve God and others every day of our lives. 
 She is survived by her husband, Gene Jaco of Hays, KS; children, 
Jana (Ray) Kuhn of Overland Park, KS, Michael (Bonnie) Jaco of 
Springfield, CO, Jill (Mark) Brin of Godley, TX; five grandchildren, 
Jesse (Jena) Jaco, Braxton Brin, Adam Kuhn, Aaron (Stephanie) Kuhn, 
Amber Kuhn; and three great-grandchildren, Tyler Jaco, Style Brin, 
Grayson Kuhn, and one on the way!
 Phyllis joins in her heavenly home, her parents, Morris and Mildred 
Mock; and siblings, Kenneth (Betty) Mock and Lawrence (Bert) Mock.
 A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, April 14, 2022, at the 
First Christian Church in Plainville at 2 PM. Visitation will be on

school and graduated with the class of 1951. Shortly after high school 
she married Gene and then went to work as a bookkeeper for many years at
 Farm Implement all while being Gene’s right hand woman. She worked the 
farm, helped Gene while he coached for many years, raised her own 
family, and ended up with many extra children who turned to her for 
support, love, and a home. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, 
photography, baking, cooking, fishing and camping. She was very active 
at the First Christian Church as a member of the Dorcas women’s group, 
youth group leader and Sunday school teacher. Above all, Phyllis loved 
to open her home and her life to kids who needed her. She always made 
sure her family, friends, and her “extra” kids were taken care of.
 Phyllis was an extremely kind, caring, and empathetic woman with a 
deep love for her family and friends. Although she will be greatly 
missed, her love and influence will remain in all our hearts. May her 
legacy inspire each of us to encourage one another, cherish the ties 
that bind and live to serve God and others every day of our lives. 
 She is survived by her husband, Gene Jaco of Hays, KS; children, 
Jana (Ray) Kuhn of Overland Park, KS, Michael (Bonnie) Jaco of 
Springfield, CO, Jill (Mark) Brin of Godley, TX; five grandchildren, 
Jesse (Jena) Jaco, Braxton Brin, Adam Kuhn, Aaron (Stephanie) Kuhn, 
Amber Kuhn; and three great-grandchildren, Tyler Jaco, Style Brin, 
Grayson Kuhn, and one on the way!
 Phyllis joins in her heavenly home, her parents, Morris and Mildred 
Mock; and siblings, Kenneth (Betty) Mock and Lawrence (Bert) Mock.
 A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, April 14, 2022, at the 
First Christian Church in Plainville at 2 PM. Visitation will be on 
Wednesday at the funeral home from 4PM until 8PM with Family Receiving

Mariella R. (Tobias) Leclerc Sawin, 93, of Sterling, Kansas, passed away March 31, 2022, at the Sterling Village, Sterling. She was born December 20, 1928, on a farm near Lyons, Kansas, the daughter of Edward A. and Pearl Brothers Tobias. Mariella has resided in Sterling since 2017, formerly of Lyons. 

She attended Union Two rural grade school, graduating from Lyons High School with the class of 1946, and later attended Sterling College. Mariella worked with young people in 4-H, in the schools and with various civic groups, including the very earliest tourism committee in Lyons. Mariella was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Lyons, where she taught children’s Sunday school classes for twelve years, was a youth group leader, sang in the church choir and was the first office secretary. 

On October 15, 1948, Mariella was united in marriage with Albert “Tod” Leclerc in Lyons, Kansas. He preceded her in death on August 26, 1989. On March 12, 1992, Mariella was united in marriage with Dean M. Sawin in Lyons. He preceded her in death on July 22, 2005. 

She is also preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Cecil Tobias, Raymond Tobias, Robert Tobias, James Tobias, and baby Arthur Tobias; and sister, Helen Long and daughter, Jamie Leclerc. 

Mariella is survived by her son, Steven Leclerc of Hays, KS; two daughters, Connie Leclerc of Lafayette, CO, and Diane Leclerc Tehan of Xenia, OH; twelve grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. 

A visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M., Friday, April 22, 2022, at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons, with family present.

James Wayne "Jim” Dowling, 70, passed away on April 8, 2022, in Oberlin, 
KS. He was born on June 2, 1951, in Oberlin, KS to Arthur J. Dowling and
 Vivian Mae Landau.
 Jim was raised in Oberlin and graduated from Decatur Community High 
School in 1969. After high school he attended Fort Hays State 
University. In 1981 Jim married Teresa Shields in Oberlin, KS and to 
that union they had 2 children: Tucker and Tara. Jim loved to be 
outdoors especially being at the lake. He also loved to spend time with
 his dog, Dexter, and all 6 of his grandchildren. Jim was a 
self-employed contractor who was very meticulous about his carpentry and
 wood working projects. 
 Jim is survived by children: Tucker Dowling of Oberlin, KS and Tara 
and husband JB Harding of Hays, KS; grandchildren: Maddox Dowling, 
Aydhun Byars, Ryker Dowling, Kaden Harding, Alyssa Harding, and Addyson 
Harding; sisters: Ann Williams of Tempe, AZ and Jane Dowling of Tempe,

He was born March 3, 1987, in Hays, the

volunteered at The Arc of Central Plains Thrift Shop, and was a member 
of CrossPoint Church.&nbsp; He enjoyed taking walks, listening to music, 
drawing, coloring, and painting rocks.&nbsp; Michael had a wonderful smile, a
 gift for making people happy, and possessed a special relationship with
 God.&nbsp; He loved his family who considered his life to be a true 
miracle.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include his mother Michelle 
Jarmer of Hays, two brothers: Cody Jarmer and Derrick Jarmer, both of 
Ness City, two aunts: Jacqueline Lang and husband Randy of Hays and 
Laura Geschwentner and husband Jeff of Ellis, two nephews: Lake and

Wendy Mae (Legleiter) Nease, 51, Hays, 
passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at HaysMed after a 
12-year battle with breast cancer.&nbsp; Her devotion to family and firm 
belief in God supported her in her struggle and ultimately gave her 
peace into the arms of her Savior.

She was born March 26, 1971, in Hays, 
the daughter of Harry and Pat (Sander) Legleiter.&nbsp; In 1990, she 
graduated from TMP-Marian High School then attended Fort Hays State 
University, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology.&nbsp; Wendy was blessed 
with a large and loving family.&nbsp; She married her high school sweetheart,
 Michael Nease, on July 2, 1994, in Hays, and their marriage gave her 27 
blessed years.&nbsp; They raised two beautiful sons who gave her immense 
joy.&nbsp;

Wendy enjoyed providing childcare for 
her nieces, nephews, and friends.&nbsp; She was a member of Celebration 
Community Church and had a love for God’s Word and involvement in Bible 
studies.&nbsp; Wendy always had a ready answer on her tongue, and her humor 
brought her family laughter, right to the end.&nbsp; She was deeply loved by 
her five sisters who surrounded her with fierce protection, prayer, and 
love.&nbsp; She had the gift of empathy, and her beauty radiated in her 
kindness to others.&nbsp;

Her favorite pastimes included playing 
games, cards, and puzzles with her family.&nbsp; She had a talent for 
drawing, which leaves her family a beautiful treasury of artwork.&nbsp; 
Flowers always graced her table and music played throughout her home.&nbsp; 
She was truly special.

Ryan F. Basgall, 37, La Crosse, passed away Saturday, April 9, 2022, at Rush County Memorial Hospital, La Crosse.

Ryan was born March 4, 1985, in Great Bend, the son of Thomas L. Smallridge, Jr. and Angela R. Basgall.&nbsp;

Survivors include his mother, Angela Basgall, La Crosse; his father, Thomas Smallridge Jr., Ohio; one brother, Jack L. Basgall, El Dorado; two nephews, Aden Basgall, and Jesse Basgall; and one niece Bayley Basgall.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Jesse T. Basgall.

Teresa Marie Dolechek, 102, died April 10, 2022, at Country Place 
Senior Living, Hoisington, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born August 24, 1919, on the
 family farm outside of Claflin, Kansas, the daughter of Frank and 
Louise (Zecha) Miller. Teresa was a graduate of Claflin High School.

On May 27, 1941, she married Paul Dolechek in Claflin, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on July 21, 2006.

A lifetime Barton County resident, Teresa was a homemaker and farm 
wife and also worked as a Nurse’s Aide at Clara Barton Hospital. She was
 a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and Altar Society 
and was a past member of the Daughters of Isabella of Claflin. Teresa 
was known for her amazing cooking, her love of card games, and most 
especially her pride in her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by her five children; Carol Schreiber (Joe) of 
Arlington, Texas, Danny Dolechek of Hoisington, Connie Petersen of 
Albert, Joni Lawrence (Brian) of Lawrence, and Paula Lumley of Olpe; a 
sister, Roberta Prosser of Hoisington; and sixteen grandchildren, Cathy 
Schreiber, Terri Bussenius, Joseph Schreiber, Diane Durland, Doug 
Dolechek, Debbie Folk, Denise Schmidt, Tracey Swalley, Tim Alderdice,

Dolechek, Debbie Folk, Denise Schmidt, Tracey Swalley, Tim Alderdice, 
Todd Alderdice, Tammy Ficken, Matt Lawrence, Jeremy Lawrence, Joel 
Lawrence, Maggie Ziglar, and Michael Lumley; 36 great grandchildren and 2
 great great grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons-in-law, Robert 
Petersen and David Lumley; two brothers, Bill and Martin Miller, and 
four sisters, Leona Leiker, Marie Hoss, Doris Smith, and Rita Dole.Visitation will be Monday 9 a.m., to 8 p.m., with family to greet 
friends from 6 to 8 p.m.. Vigil and Rosary will begin at 7 p.m., all at 
the funeral home.Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 19, 2022,
 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, celebrated by Father 
Meinrad Miller.&nbsp; Burial will follow in St. John Catholic Cemetery,
