Veronica Emelia Olson, 96, of Westminster, Colorado passed away on April 29th, 2022 at home. 
Veronica was born in Ludell, Kansas to Joseph and Emma Pettera on March 
28th, 1926. She attended high school at St. Mary’s and finished in the 
1970s with a GED from District 50. She was employed as a cook and a 
housekeeper, as well as working for Macy’s and Joslin’s for many years. 
She enjoyed attending church and watching her favorite shows, which were
 Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. 
Veronica is survived by her daughters Dorothy (Jack) Reed, Tamelyn 
(Wade) Stevens, Sheryl (Joseph) Hunt, Vera Olson, and Shawn (Bruce) 
Wamsley. She is also survived by her grandchildren John Paul Reed, Kurt 
Jones, Amelia Reed, Telia Lewis, Richard Hunt, Johnathan Hunt, 
Christopher Reed, Khloe Jones-Pede, Donald Lewis, Kallen Hunt, Zane 
Reed, and Harrison Hunt. 
She was preceded in death by her husband John Severen Olson and her grandson Richard Wade. 
Veronica loved her entire family, including her grandpuppies! 
Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m., with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m., Friday, May 6,

Veronica Emelia Olson

Marvin&nbsp;Ray Nimz&nbsp;was born on October 22, 1929, in Ransom, Kansas, the son of Wilhelm&nbsp;and Celia (Rufenacht) Nimz. He passed away&nbsp;Monday, May 2,&nbsp;2022,&nbsp;at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital.&nbsp;He was 92 years old.

Marvin grew up in&nbsp;Trego County, attended local schools and graduated from Trego Community High School with&nbsp;the class of 1947.&nbsp;On July 17, 1952, Marvin was united in marriage to Frances (Richmeier) Nimz.

Marvin was a farmer&nbsp;and&nbsp;enjoyed playing cards, woodworking, jigsaw puzzles and gardening.

Elsie Beth Speer, 85, died Tuesday March 29, 2022, in Garden City, 
Kansas. She was born July 21, 1936, in Lane County the daughter of James 
Clark and Bessie G. (Edmundson) Johnston. 
Elsie was a lifetime resident of the Dighton Community where she 
attended and graduated from the local schools. Upon graduation she went 
on to college where she received her Bachelor's Degree in Education from
 Kansas State University. She then returned home to begin her own career
 as a school teacher in a one room schoolhouse. On August 10, 1963 she 
married Jarold Edwin Speer and to that union three sons were born. The 
two later divorced. 
Elsie Beth enjoyed playing the piano and she did so, beautifully. She 
was selfless, nurturing and always put others needs before her own; a 
caretaker almost to a fault. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren. She
 attended countless sporting events and activities, sometimes not even 
for the game itself but simply to watch one of her grandchildren perform
 with the band. Elsie was a member of the United Methodist Women, Spring
 Creek FCE, and As You Like It Club. 
Survivors include her Children Lloyd Speer of Sylvan Grove, Doug Speer 
of Garden City, and Dean Speer of Dighton, Grandchildren- Hannah, 
Benjamin, Leslie, Jordan, Lani, and Carlie. She is preceded in death by 
her Parents and Brother- Alvin Johnston. 
Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 am Saturday May 7, 2022, at the 
United Methodist Church, burial will follow in Dighton Memorial

Norma Jeane (Nickel) Hodge, 96, passed away January 13, 2022. &nbsp;She was born July 4, 1925, on her grandparents' farm near Axtell, Nebraska in Kearney County to Hans Casper Nickel and Laura Mary (Laue) Nickel.

She was preceded in death by her husband Warren and son Rex, her parents, sisters and brother Bernice Murrish, Dietrich Nickel, and Louise Fritz.

Norma is survived by son Norman (Janice) Topeka, KS, daughter-in-law UL Son Hodge, Farmington MN, son Lonnie (Corazon) Norfork, VA and daughter Jnell (Carl) Conkey, Edmond, KS. 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Donald Eugene Witte, 84, passed away on April 30, 2022, at Hays 
Medical Center in Hays, Kansas. He was born on January 28, 1938, to 
Edwin &amp; Helen (Edmondson) Witte in Great Bend, Kansas. Donald 
married Caroline Werth on November 25, 1965, in Park, Kansas.

A lifetime resident of Great Bend, Donald graduated from Fort Hays 
State University with a degree in Industrial Arts. He worked as a 
draftsman for many companies throughout his career, as well as farming 
the century-old Witte Family farm in Rush County. Donald was a member of
 St. Patrick Catholic Church in the Prince of Peace Parish, the Wet 
Walnut Water Shed, and E.A.A. He was a private pilot, having learned the
 skill during his service in the Navy, including his recall for service 
during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Survivors include his wife of the home; four sons, Dorian (Cheryl) 
Witte of Great Bend, Edwin (Nicole) Witte of Eastborough, Steven Witte 
(fiancée Corinne Lenz) of Manhattan, and Christopher (Rachel) Witte of 
Great Bend; one daughter, Deidre (Gary) Campbell of Great Bend; twelve 
grandchildren: Benjamin, Samuel, Elijah, Garrett, Emerson, Edwin, Drew 
Plaxton, Brianna, Gaven, Zaiden Burkes, Elaina, Everest; eight 
great-grandchildren; Cooper, Henry, Berklee, Harrison, Dawson, Benjamin,
 Nora, and Scarlett; a brother, Samuel Witte of Great Bend; a sister, 
Wreatha Witte of St. George, Utah. He is preceded in death by his 
parents and a brother, Thurman Witte.

Visitation will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, May

Knights of Columbus Rosary starting at 7:00 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral

Donald Eugene Witte

James "Jim" Francis Underwood age 86 went home to be with his Lord on February 23, 2022.  Jim was born on August 25, 1936, in Milwaukee, OR. to the late Burchie and Ruby (Rhoades) Underwood. In 1938, his family moved back to Norton and this is where Jim made his home. While a senior in high school Jim joined the Army Reserves.  After high school he worked on the paint and garden crew for the State Sanatorium.  He then went to Fort Carson Colorado for two weeks of boot camp after which he joined the Navy.  He took his basics at the Great Lakes in Chicago.  In the latter part of 1957, he went to work for his dad Burchie at the Underwood Conoco station in Norton.  On October 11, 1958, he married Wenda L. Taylor.  They have 3 daughters.  Patty, Theresa and Connie. In 1973, after his dad Burchie retired Jim took over the Underwood Conoco station.  After 50 years, Jim retired from the station.  The Underwood Conoco station was the last full-service station in downtown Norton. 

Jim was active with the Norton Jaycees.  He was the director in 1971 and won the Gold Key Man’s award.  He was the Jaycees girls’ softball director and coached his daughters’ teams for many years. Jim was on a couple of bowling teams one of them being the Underwood Conoco Team.  He was a member of the Norton Squarenaders beginning in 1972 and serving as Vice President and President of the club. Jim was a member of the Chamber of Commerce. He belonged to the Eagles, American Legion, ABC Bowling Association and the Conoco Inc. Dealers Association. Jim was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Jim will be remembered for his love of his family, his customers and friends who traded with him at the station and his love of the outdoors. This note was found in his billford. Jim loved his hometown of Norton Kansas.  Ask Jim anything that had to do with Norton and he could tell you the history and who was related to who in Norton. He was a walking history book of Norton Kansas. 

Survivors include three daughters Patty Fitzmaurice and her husband Rev. David Fitzmaurice, Belgrade MO., Theresa Underwood Palo, KS., and Connie Ellis and husband Glen Ellis Lenora KS. Four grandchildren Joshua Fitzmaurice Bend OR., Silas Fitzmaurice Chesterfield MO., William Seven Jones Denver CO., and James Jones Palo, KS.  One sister Bonnie (Underwood) and husband Dr. William Lathrop Lawrence KS., and one brother Jerry and Sybil Underwood Leawood, KS: eight great grandchildren: other relatives and his many friends. 

He was preceded in death by his wife Wenda Underwood and his parents Burchie and Ruby Underwood.

Cremation was chosen.  A graveside service will be held Monday, May 9, at 1:00 p.m. in the Norton Cemetery with Rev. David Fitzmaurice officiating.

 </figure>James "Jim" Francis Underwood age 86 went home to be with his Lord on February 23, 2022. Jim was born on August 25, 1936, in Milwaukee, OR. to the late Burchie and Ruby (Rhoades) Underwood. In 1938, his family moved back to Norton and this is where Jim made his home. While a senior in high school Jim joined the Army Reserves. After high school he worked on the paint and garden crew for the State Sanatorium. He then went to Fort Carson Colorado for two weeks of boot camp after which he joined the Navy. He took his basics at the Great Lakes in Chicago. In the latter part of 1957, he went to work for his dad Burchie at the Underwood Conoco station in Norton. On October 11, 1958, he married Wenda L. Taylor. They have 3 daughters. Patty, Theresa and Connie. In 1973, after his dad Burchie retired Jim took over the Underwood Conoco station. After 50 years, Jim retired from the station. The Underwood Conoco station was the last full-service station in downtown Norton. Jim was active with the Norton Jaycees. He was the director in 1971 and won the Gold Key Man’s award. He was the Jaycees girls’ softball director and coached his daughters’ teams for many years. Jim was on a couple of bowling teams one of them being the Underwood Conoco Team. He was a member of the Norton Squarenaders beginning in 1972 and serving as Vice President and President of the club. Jim was a member of the Chamber of Commerce. He belonged to the Eagles, American Legion, ABC Bowling Association and the Conoco Inc. Dealers Association. Jim was a member of the United Methodist Church.Jim will be remembered for his love of his family, his customers and friends who traded with him at the station and his love of the outdoors. James 'Jim' Underwood

Sue Ellen Wheeler, 77, passed away May 1, 2022, at Hays Medical 
Center, Hays.&nbsp; She was born January 26, 1945, in Great Bend, to Frank N.
 and Ellen Marie (Baier) Klepper. Sue married Miles I. Wheeler September
 21, 1963, in Great Bend.&nbsp; He died January 3, 1993.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Sue worked in Quality Control at 
Fuller Brush and was a long standing employee at Walmart, serving as a 
cashier, working in the infant and toddler department and, finally, a 
door greeter before retiring. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish
 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and Fraternal Order of the Eagles.&nbsp;
 She enjoyed making fudge and knitting blankets and sweaters for her 
family and friends.

Survivors include one son, Michael Wheeler and wife Kim of Great 
Bend; two daughters, Susan Wheeler of Great Bend and Sherry Miller and 
husband Ed of Hudson; two sisters, Cynthia Hogan of Kinsley and Carla 
Markovich of Great Bend; seven grandchildren, Melanie Miller, Melissa 
Miller, Jared Wheeler (Tiffany), Ebony Moon, Malik Moon, Alisha Wheeler 
and Blake Wheeler; and twelve great grandchildren, Dalton Wheeler,

Kay Ellen Unruh, 74, Hays, died Sunday, May 1, 2022, at her home surrounded by her husband, daughters, and sister.

She was born September 30, 1947, in 
Great Bend, the daughter of Parker and Dorothy (McDonald) Carr.&nbsp; Kay 
graduated from Larned High School and Fort Hays State University, with a
 Bachelor’s degree in Education.&nbsp; For more than twenty years, Kay was 
rates and service representative for Midwest Energy.&nbsp; On September 2, 
1967, she was united in marriage to Randy K. Unruh in Larned.&nbsp; They 
celebrated 54 years of marriage.&nbsp; Her memberships included Hays First 
United Methodist Church and Soroptimist International.&nbsp; She volunteered 
for Habitat for Humanity, Hospice of HaysMed, and CASA.&nbsp; Kay was a 
talented artist, enjoyed reading, going to the movies with friends, 
growing flowers, and appreciated culture, the arts, traveling, and 
education.&nbsp; Most of all, she loved her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband: Randy of
 Hays, two daughters: Kari Balthazor and husband Kristian and Kelly 
Waisner and husband Mick, all of Eudora, a sister: Linda Hahn of 
Fayetteville, AR, three grandchildren: Mason and Grady Balthazor and 
Silas Waisner, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, foster brother: Jack Hill, and a niece: Jennifer Hahn.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on
 Friday, May 6, 2022, at Hays First United Methodist Church, with Rev.

Kay Ellen Unruh

Donald Mark Kramer, 66, died Saturday April 30, 2022, at his home in 
Liberal, Kansas. He was born February 9, 1956, in Oakland, California, 
the son of Don and Norma (Bowman) Kramer. 
Mark moved to Garden City with his family at a young age, it was here 
that he attended and graduated from the local schools. Mark worked in 
the maintenance and housekeeping division for St. Catherine Hospital 
before relocating to Liberal, Kansas. He then worked in the housekeeping
 division for Southwest Medical Center for more than 25 years until he 
retired in 2017. 
Mark was a people person and enjoyed spending time helping whenever he 
could even after retirement. He was a kind-hearted and giving person, he
 cared deeply for everyone in his life. He was an avid KC Chiefs fan and
 loved all things Elvis. Mark had a signature gray beard which he 
refused to part with so that he could play “Santa Claus” for both his 
family and the hospital. He volunteered his time wherever he could and 
enjoyed several social activities at the Senior Center. 
Survivors include a Brother- Norman “Pete” Kramer of Great Bend, Ks, 
Sister- Carol (Daryl) Tieben of Dodge City, Kansas, along with numerous 
nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his Parents and one 
Nephew- Bernard Adam Kramer. 
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am Thursday May 5, 2022, at 
Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City, Kansas with burial to follow at

Donald Mark Kramer

Mary Priscilla Brummer was born on November 6, 1951, in Red Cloud, Nebraska. She died Friday, April 29, 2022, at the Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita, after a long battle with multiple health issues at the age of 70.

   She grew up in Nebraska and spent most of her years living in the Downs/Cawker City area. Mary was a dedicated, hard worker all her life and she was tough. She was a loyal employee holding numerous jobs, sometimes multiple jobs at the same time. She always took great pride in her work and provided for her family. Her last job was running the Cawker City Senior Center. She loved that job and felt a responsibility to help people.

   Mary spent many years employed as a welder at Sunflower Manufacturing. A hard job that most men cannot do. She did it well, displaying that toughness. For the last few years Mary endured an unfair amount of health issues. But you never knew how much pain she was in because she rarely, even up to the end, complained. She was tough.

   Mary was first married to Roger Angell (who previously had two children of his own- Charles and Lisa) and had two children: Jim Angell and Jennifer Angell. That marriage ended and Mary then met the love of her life: Melvin “Dennis” Brummer. They were married adding two of Dennis’ children to the family – Cindy Mick and Dennis Lee Brummer.

   Mary and Dennis were true soulmates, and they were literally inseparable. They loved dancing, traveling, camping, fishing and rooting on the Jayhawks. Mary lost Dennis in 2015. The family is happy Mary got to see her beloved Jayhawks win a championship before she died. And the family is even happier to know that her and Dennis are united again. No doubt swing dancing to the Jimmy Dee Band.

   Mary most of all loved her family. And she was dedicated to it. She had many “step” children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. However, the word “step” never entered her vocabulary. She loved everyone the same.

   Mary is survived by her siblings, her children, 13 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren.

   Funeral services will be at 11 AM Wednesday, May 4, at the Sts. Peter &amp; Paul Catholic Church in Cawker City. A rosary service will be at 10 AM Wednesday at the Church. There will be no visitation &amp; the casket will remain closed. Memorials may be given to the Cawker City Senior Center.

Marvin Joseph Sander, 87, of Oakley, died Saturday, April 23, 2022. He 
was born December 21, 1934, in rural Gove County, KS, to Severn and 
Bridget (Graf) Sander. After graduating from Monument High school in 
1954, Marvin served in the United States Army. After completing his 
service, he then worked at Weaver Beaty, in Denver, CO and Dreiling 
Buick &amp; Cadillac, Denver. He returned to Oakley, KS in 1982. During 
that time, he and his first wife Lois ran the Little Cafe until her 
death, and he worked for the City of Oakley as a mechanic until his 
retirement, in May of 1997. On September 6, 1997, Marvin married Erma 
(Stithem) Graham. 
During his retirement, Marvin stayed active. He worked for Developmental
 Services of Northwest Kansas and taught the billiards class and worked 
for the USD #274 as a Headstart bus monitor. He was a member of the St. 
Joseph Catholic Church and formerly of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and 
Fraternal Order of Eagles. In his free time, Marvin enjoyed playing 
cards with the Mo Fun card club and passing the love of playing 10-point
 pitch down to his kids and grandkids. He was always tinkering with 
something in his shop or working on his classic cars, and enjoyed going 
to car shows and being part of the Tri-County Cruisers car club. 
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife Lois; son Greg; 
son-in-law Jerry; brothers Edwin “Speed”, Alvin and Ronnie; sisters, 
Sandy, Rena, Alberta “Birdie” and Alice “Blacky”. 
He is survived by his wife, Erma Graham-Sander; children, Darrin Sander,
 Kimberly (Rick) Salisbury, Mark (Melissa) Graham, Melissa (Trent) 
Pinero, Mitchell (Richard Young) Graham Jr. and Shelly Wilks; 
daughter-in-law, Wendy Schwarz; grandchildren, Amy Manwarren, Abigail

During his retirement, Marvin stayed active. He worked for Developmental
 Services of Northwest Kansas and taught the billiards class and worked 
for the USD #274 as a Headstart bus monitor. He was a member of the St. 
Joseph Catholic Church and formerly of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and 
Fraternal Order of Eagles. In his free time, Marvin enjoyed playing 
cards with the Mo Fun card club and passing the love of playing 10-point
 pitch down to his kids and grandkids. He was always tinkering with 
something in his shop or working on his classic cars, and enjoyed going 
to car shows and being part of the Tri-County Cruisers car club. 
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife Lois; son Greg; 
son-in-law Jerry; brothers Edwin “Speed”, Alvin and Ronnie; sisters, 
Sandy, Rena, Alberta “Birdie” and Alice “Blacky”. 
He is survived by his wife, Erma Graham-Sander; children, Darrin Sander,

Pinero, Mitchell (Richard Young) Graham Jr. and Shelly Wilks;

Mary Jane Carlton Smith, age 96, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on&nbsp;April 28, 2022, at the Wallace County Care Center in Sharon Springs, KS.

Mary was born on Dece<a></a>mber 2, 1925, in Beloit, KS to Rev. A.L. and Laura (Lewis) Carlton. She was the youngest of nine children. Her father was a Methodist minister which took the family to Beloit, Norton and Goodland before settling in Jennings, KS. Mary graduated from Jennings Community High School in 1943. She attended college at Nebraska Wesleyan in Lincoln, NE from 1943-1946. During these years, she performed in many plays and traveled with a theater&nbsp;troupe.&nbsp;Mary married Darwin L. Smith on June 9, 1946 in Jennings, KS.

Since 1950, Darwin and Mary made their home in Sharon Springs, KS. She was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. In 1963 she added a career to her life when she went to work for the Sharon Springs school system. She worked&nbsp;in the&nbsp;office and then became the board clerk. She worked at the school until her retirement in 1991.&nbsp;

Mary’s memberships included the Sharon Springs United Methodist Church, the Methodist Women, the Sharon Springs Music Club, and the Wallace County Senior Center. She also served as the Sunday School Superintendent for many years, sang in the church choir, directed a children’s choir,&nbsp;and sang for many funerals and weddings.&nbsp;Mary and Darwin participated in several Lay Witness Missions through the church. Talking to others about her faith and&nbsp;her&nbsp;walk with Jesus was one of her favorite things to do.

Mary and Darwin were blessed with six children; Lois, Ellen, Sarah, Lora, Emily, and Lewis. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, Granny, and of course the best title she had, Great Granny. She took pride in her family making a home for them. She and Darwin always welcomed their friends and their children’s friends into their home.&nbsp;

She&nbsp;is preceded in death by her&nbsp;loving&nbsp;husband, Darwin,&nbsp;on October 14, 2004, her son-in-law Alan Roop,&nbsp;and grandson Garth Roop.&nbsp;She was also preceded in death by her parents;&nbsp;four brothers,&nbsp;Arlyn, Rev. Lawrence, Glen, and James Carlton; four sisters,&nbsp;Zelfa&nbsp;Neill,&nbsp;Harriett Casey, Naomi Carter, and Rachel Carter.&nbsp;

Mary is survived by Lois Pearce and her husband Bryan of Wallace, Ellen Roop of Lakewood CO, Sarah Alt and her husband Doug of Salina, Lora Rochholz and her husband David of Minot, North Dakota, Emily Bolen and her husband Bruce of Sharon Springs, and Lewis&nbsp;Smith and his wife Susan of Phillipsburg, 15 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren,&nbsp;and many nieces, nephews, and friends.&nbsp;

Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 5, 2022, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM MT at Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Sharon Springs.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 6, 2022, at 10:00 AM MT at the Sharon Springs United Methodist Church with Pastor Galen Crippen and Reverend Paul McNall officiating. &nbsp;Burial will follow in the Sharon Springs Cemetery.

Philip H. Gottschalk Jr. of Edmond, OK passed away peacefully on April 29, 2022, in Edmond, Oklahoma. Phil was born on&nbsp;November 23, 1936, in Hays, Kansas to Philip H., Sr. and&nbsp;Lidwina(Werth) Gottschalk.

Phil was a devout Catholic, loving husband and devoted&nbsp;father. He had enormous compassion for his four grandchildren.

Phil worked for the Mid-Continent Group in claims for&nbsp;many years, serving as President and Vice President. He&nbsp;was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He loved&nbsp;gardening, fishing, hunting and was an avid University of&nbsp;Oklahoma Sooners sports fan. In his younger years Phil loved&nbsp;participating in the summer wheat harvest, helping his&nbsp;brothers and rekindling his youth as a young boy in Ellis

County, Kansas. One of his favorite activities was&nbsp;pheasant hunting in Jennings, Kansas.

Phil and Bernadette would have been married for 60 years&nbsp;on May 14, 2022.

He is survived by his wife Bernadette, sons, Philip&nbsp;Gottschalk, III, David Gottschalk and wife Ann,&nbsp;daughter Shelly and husband Sam Harris, grandchildren,&nbsp;Brian and wife Stephanie Harris, Melissa Harris, Cristina and&nbsp;Grace Gottschalk, great granddaughter, Haley Harris.

Ruth Ann (Tatro) Mann, 63, passed away peacefully in her sleep early 
Saturday morning, April 30, 2022, at her home in Satanta, Kansas. She was
 born February 24, 1959, to Alice Agnes (Bayer) and Paul Edward Tatro in 
Ulysses, Kansas. 
Ruth dedicated herself to serving others in various roles including as a
 cook for USD 507, a CNA/RA at Satanta Long Term Care Unit, Director and
 cook at the Pride of Life, Owner/Operator of Ruth’s Bakes Shop and 
Mann’s Popcorn, and most recently, as caregiver to Kyra. 
Lee and Ruth were married over her lunch hour 37 years ago at the court 
house in Seward County. That evening, they attended their first auction 
and started their ongoing adventure, always in search of the next piece 
of American Fostoria, stained glass or rare antique. They also enjoyed 
sitting outside on the back porch and watching the hummingbirds and 
purple martins come and go. Ruth was a no-frills force of nature. 
A lifelong caregiver, Ruth was a loving and devoted wife, mother, 
grandmother and sister.&nbsp;Ruth’s most passionate roll in life was being a 
mother. She always put her children first. Ruth was a rock for her 
children, never missing the birth of a grandchild, an opportunity to 
fill their bellies or a chance to be surrounded by her family. Her 
children and her grandchildren were her true treasures. 
Ruth is survived by her husband, Robert Lee Mann, Jr. of the home; 
children, Mark Lozar and wife DeLayna of Turpin, OK, Amy Hale and 
husband Jeremy of Hays, KS; Lesley Schellenberg and husband Abe of

Ruth Ann Mann

David Allen "Dave" Weed, 67, of Salina, Kansas, passed away Monday, April 18th, 2022, in the loving arms of his family.
 Dave was born in Colby, Kansas on March 12, 1955, to parents Mary Helen (Sutter) Weed and Jack Donald Weed.
 Graduating from Brewster High School, Class of 1973, Dave was 
proud to be in the top ten of his class of 12. He enlisted in the United
 States Marine Corps after high school, serving from 1974 to 1977, 
rising to the rank of Corporal E4 in the Correctional Service Company 
where he earned several marksmanship awards, the Good Conduct Medal and 
was honorably discharged. His roommates often told him he was “one 
squared away Marine” because his uniforms always looked impeccable. His 
goals then were to gain a Bachelor’s Degree and join the Kansas Highway 
Patrol.
 After the military, Dave attended Colby Community College 
earning a degree in Journalism and a Bachelor’s in Communications from 
Fort Hays State University. Always an avid runner, he enjoyed running 
alongside the university track team and with the Hays Area Road Runners.
 He ran the 1979 KU Relays Marathon and the 1983 Nike OTC marathon with a
 time of 3:09 and was proud to be the only representative from Kansas. 
It was while attending college at Fort Hays he met his future wife Mary 
Alice Yunker. Dave spotted her while “dragging Main” and began talking 
to her. Later he got her phone number by running down every street in 
Hays until he found her car then searched for the phone connected to her
 home address and made the call. She was immediately smitten. Their 
first date, the following Friday, was at the first basketball sell out 
game at Gross Memorial Coliseum.&nbsp; On December 4, 1989, Dave and Mary 
Alice wed in Salina, Kansas.
 Dave served as an Ellis County Sheriff’s Deputy from 1985 to 
1987 before joining the Kansas Highway Patrol in 1987, where he served 
for thirty years. Retiring as a Lieutenant in the Patrol, he had been in
 charge of the Breath Alcohol Unit and for a time the Drug Recognition 
Unit. He was hired back two months later as a consultant in 2018. 
Throughout his law enforcement career, he formed many friendships and 
always considered coworkers as family.
 He enjoyed spontaneous coddiwomple road trips with his wife 
where they tried local cuisine and serenaded one another on long drives.
 Dave was the life of the party bringing joy and laughter to those 
around him. He was a brilliant man and a great storyteller. Dave’s 
knowledge of trivia was uncanny. His quirky sense of humor, fierce 
protective spirit and loving nature made for many memorable moments with
 family and friends. Dave was a loyal friend to all and shared his love 
of life and big heart with those lucky enough to find him in their 
company.
 A dedicated father and grandfather, Dave was the announcer for 
the Basketball and Football games for Ell- Saline High School from 2004 
until 2018. He attended every school program and ball game his three 
children and grandchildren participated in.
 Dave is survived by his wife, Mary Alice; daughters, Lydia 
Kirchman (Adam), of Salina, Kansas and Elaina Sullivan (Jake), of 
Wichita, Kansas; son, Andrew Weed of Salina, Kansas; grandchildren, 
Camille, Josephine, and MacArthur; his mother, Mary Weed of Colby, 
Kansas; sisters, Susan Focke (Dwight) and Nancy Ohlrogge (David), of 
Colby, Kansas; and brothers, Charles Weed, of Denver, Colorado, and 
Michael Weed (Michelle), of Levant, Kansas.
 Left to also cherish his memory are brothers-in-law, Robert 
Yunker, of Salina, Kansas, Charles Yunker, of Tecumseh, Kansas, Mark 
Yunker (Karen), of Fountain, Colorado, James Yunker (Shirley), of Hays, 
Kansas, Daniel Yunker (Joan), of Andover, Kansas; three sisters-in-law,

 </figure>David Allen "Dave" Weed, 67, of Salina, Kansas, passed away Monday, April 18th, 2022, in the loving arms of his family.
 Dave was born in Colby, Kansas on March 12, 1955, to parents Mary Helen (Sutter) Weed and Jack Donald Weed.
 Graduating from Brewster High School, Class of 1973, Dave was 
proud to be in the top ten of his class of 12. He enlisted in the United
 States Marine Corps after high school, serving from 1974 to 1977, 
rising to the rank of Corporal E4 in the Correctional Service Company 
where he earned several marksmanship awards, the Good Conduct Medal and 
was honorably discharged. His roommates often told him he was “one 
squared away Marine” because his uniforms always looked impeccable. His 
goals then were to gain a Bachelor’s Degree and join the Kansas Highway 
Patrol.
 After the military, Dave attended Colby Community College 
earning a degree in Journalism and a Bachelor’s in Communications from 
Fort Hays State University. Always an avid runner, he enjoyed running 
alongside the university track team and with the Hays Area Road Runners.
 He ran the 1979 KU Relays Marathon and the 1983 Nike OTC marathon with a
 time of 3:09 and was proud to be the only representative from Kansas. 
It was while attending college at Fort Hays he met his future wife Mary 
Alice Yunker. Dave spotted her while “dragging Main” and began talking 
to her. Later he got her phone number by running down every street in 
Hays until he found her car then searched for the phone connected to her
 home address and made the call. She was immediately smitten. Their 
first date, the following Friday, was at the first basketball sell out 
game at Gross Memorial Coliseum.&nbsp; On December 4, 1989, Dave and Mary 
Alice wed in Salina, Kansas.
 Dave served as an Ellis County Sheriff’s Deputy from 1985 to 
1987 before joining the Kansas Highway Patrol in 1987, where he served 
for thirty years. Retiring as a Lieutenant in the Patrol, he had been in
 charge of the Breath Alcohol Unit and for a time the Drug Recognition 
Unit. He was hired back two months later as a consultant in 2018. 
Throughout his law enforcement career, he formed many friendships and 
always considered coworkers as family.
 He enjoyed spontaneous coddiwomple road trips with his wife 
where they tried local cuisine and serenaded one another on long drives.
 Dave was the life of the party bringing joy and laughter to those 
around him. He was a brilliant man and a great storyteller. Dave’s 
knowledge of trivia was uncanny. His quirky sense of humor, fierce 
protective spirit and loving nature made for many memorable moments with
 family and friends. Dave was a loyal friend to all and shared his love 
of life and big heart with those lucky enough to find him in their 
company.
 A dedicated father and grandfather, Dave was the announcer for 
the Basketball and Football games for Ell- Saline High School from 2004 
until 2018. He attended every school program and ball game his three 
children and grandchildren participated in.
 Dave is survived by his wife, Mary Alice; daughters, Lydia 
Kirchman (Adam), of Salina, Kansas and Elaina Sullivan (Jake), of 
Wichita, Kansas; son, Andrew Weed of Salina, Kansas; grandchildren, 
Camille, Josephine, and MacArthur; his mother, Mary Weed of Colby, 
Kansas; sisters, Susan Focke (Dwight) and Nancy Ohlrogge (David), of 
Colby, Kansas; and brothers, Charles Weed, of Denver, Colorado, and 
Michael Weed (Michelle), of Levant, Kansas.
 Left to also cherish his memory are brothers-in-law, Robert 
Yunker, of Salina, Kansas, Charles Yunker, of Tecumseh, Kansas, Mark 
Yunker (Karen), of Fountain, Colorado, James Yunker (Shirley), of Hays, 
Kansas, Daniel Yunker (Joan), of Andover, Kansas; three sisters-in-law, 
Lois Yunker, of Munjor, Kansas, Janice Koshiol, of Hays, Kansas, DeAnn 
Ricketts of Topeka, Kansas many nieces and nephews, the Kansas Highway 
Patrol Family, Marine Corps brothers and his best buddy, Skipper, his 
dog.
 Dave was preceded in death by his father, Jack Weed, in-laws, 
Lydia and Martin Yunker; brothers-in-law, David Yunker, Thomas Yunker, 
Patrick Koshiol; sister-in-law, Kathy Yunker, and nephew, Matthew 
Yunker.
 Visitation will be held 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Thursday, April 
28th, at Carlson - Geisendorf Funeral Home &amp; Crematory in Salina, 
Kansas.

David Allen 'Dave' Weed

Wilfred Engel entered into eternal life on April 29th, 2022, in Colby, KS.  He was a Christmas baby being born December 24th, 1927, at home in Sheridan County, Kansas to Peter &amp; Amelia Rupp Engel.

Being the 9th of 11 children, Wilfred learned the ins and outs of being onery.  Several stories have been shared about Wilfred’s early antics with skunks, standing on horseback rides, sledding down hills using shovels, etc.  Wilfred had an incredible memory and was able to share many stories late into life, with many commenting on this rare quality.

Wilfred’s early education was in a 1-room county schoolhouse and finished his education in Grainfield, Kansas.  Wilfred learned about farming early in life when his brothers served in WWII and the Korean War.

Wilfred decided to settle down in 1957 and married Donna Lou Kraus, a music teacher from Andale, KS.  To this union were born 8 children and Wilfred &amp; Donna celebrated 65 years of marriage on March 2nd, 2022.

Wilfred was very proud of the farm that he had built on the wind-swept plains of Western Kansas.  Wilfred jokingly and lovingly called his farm “The Poor Farm.”  Wilfred enjoyed working his land and taking care of his cattle and took satisfaction in a long day's work.  The farm looks very different today from where it started.  Wilfred was a forward-thinking farmer, being one of the first in the area to terrace for water retention and flood irrigation.  Education of his children was also a priority, and he took great pride in ensuring that all of his children received a college education.

Wilfred and Donna had the opportunity to travel to most of the states, and to visit Germany where his ancestors originated.  Visiting, telling stories, and playing cards brought special pleasure.

Wilfred was preceded by his parents, in-laws, his brothers:  Clarence, Ignatius, Henry, Joe, Ralph, Paul, and Felix Engel:  and his sisters:  Flizita Kaiser, Mary Prewo, Mary Adeline, and Gertrude Parsons.

Wilfred was the last surviving member of his siblings.  Wilfred is survived by his wife Donna; children:  Dave (Bonnie) Engel, Jolene (Ted) Robinette, Leah (Dan) Davied, Steve (Anne) Engel, Cynthia (Alan) Smith, Sheryl (Clay) Appl, Dan (Chrissy) Engel, and Ron Engel; 23 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.  Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 4 at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Angelus with Fr. Luke Thielen officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  Visitation will be Tuesday, May 3, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. at the church.

Stanley Ray Wilson, 43, of Victoria, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 28, 2022.

Survivors include his wife, Heather Wilson of Victoria; father and step-mother Claude Stanley Wilson and Janice Wilson, Dodge City, KS; children, Jessie Wilson, Dodge City; Anna Wilson, Augusta; Jason and Nevaeh Wilson, Liberal; step-children Braden Bieker, Hoxie; Ashlyn Kaus, Camp Pendleton, CA; Ivan Kaus, Selden, and mother in law, Arlene Bieker, Hoxie.

Stanley Ray Wilson

Larry Soice left this world peacefully on April 28 after a valiant 
battle with Amyloidosis. Larry was best known as a quiet man of few 
words, a man of grace. Humble. A role model to some, a hero to others. 
Even keeled. A man people knew they could depend on. A leader.

Larry
 was born July 11, 1945, in Montezuma, Kansas. He was the first of two 
sons for Verle and Lora Soice. He was happiest when he was out on the 
tractor or combine with dirt swirling and the sun beating down on him. 
He graduated from Montezuma High School and went on to play basketball 
at Dodge City Junior College where he was a member of the 1963-64 team 
that won the National JuCo Championship. He went on to play at Fort Hays
 State University his junior year, but soon discovered a love for 
spreadsheets and hung up his basketball shoes to concentrate on 
accounting. In 1968, after completing his Master’s program, he moved to 
Wichita to take his first, and, as it turned out, his only job with 
Elmer Fox and Company. It was boom times for the small company and he 
moved up the ladder to become the Managing Partner. The company grew 
quickly, eventually merging with Grant Thornton; he was still with the 
company 40 years later when he retired in 2008. 

During his time 
in Junior College, Larry met Nicki Mayrath, sharing farming backgrounds.
 Grass didn’t grow under their feet, and they were married in 1965. They
 celebrated their 57th anniversary in February. Teri Sue and Scott Eric 
soon made the family complete Larry found true joy in. He encouraged 
them, cheered for them, and their lives made his richer. He missed the 
laughter when the kids left home and found it too quiet, but not for 
long. Scott would often come over for some fatherly advice or summon 
Larry to his place. Over the next four years, Larry found himself 
involved in Scott’s Wichita State fraternity chapter of Sigma Phi 
Epsilon. The Brothers would show their appreciation by initiating Larry 
as Honorary Brother in 1995.

Larry believed it was important to 
give back to his community and he modeled that. He gave generously of 
his time to many Wichita groups. He chaired the Chamber of Commerce and 
the United Way Campaign; he served as the first president of the 
Downtown Wichita Association. During retirement, he found joy in serving
 on the Board of Episcopal Social Services and working as a Payee for 
them. He was active at St. John’s Episcopal Church. 

Larry was 
preceded in death by his beloved son Scott, sister-in-law Melissa 
Wagner, parents Verle and Lora Soice, and nephew Henery Cromwell.

He
 is survived by his wife Nicki, daughter Teri Berry of Valley Center, 
grandson and loyal caregiver Jesse Berry; brother Phil Soice (Peggy) of 
Santa Fe, New Mexico; sisters-in-law Sharon Mayrath and Noel Cromwell of
 Kansas City; nephew Neil (Laura) Soice, niece Jennifer (Craig) Pelz; 
niece Angela Cromwell Dudley; nephew Aron (Sarah) Cromwell, and many 
friends and colleague.

Memorials have been established with Breakthrough/Episcopal Social Services and Wichita State School of Business.

Mary Jane (Carlton) Smith

Robert Lee St. Peter, 70, Hays, died Thursday, April 28, 2022, at his home.

He was born September 6, 1951, in 
Wichita, the son of Casimir J. and Della M. (LaBarge) St. Peter.&nbsp; In 
1969, he graduated from Hays High School.&nbsp; He owned and operated many 
restaurants throughout Hays and generously donated to the community, 
schools, and Special Olympics.&nbsp; On August 9, 1980, he was united in 
marriage to Ellia I. “Dee” Grimes in Higbee, Missouri, and they were 
married nearly 42 years.&nbsp; He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church,
 and his hobbies included rebuilding computers, tinkering on cars, 
attending car shows, and collecting coins, mugs, and Harley items.&nbsp; He 
enjoyed his Corvette, Harley, and Jaguar.&nbsp; Robert loved the outdoors, 
especially family time at the lake, fishing, jet skiing, river rafting, 
and cabin life. He enjoyed traveling with Dee and cherished every moment
 with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Dee of Hays,
 three daughters: Dominique Unrein and husband Lee of Makaha Valley, HI,
 Angelique Simms and husband Jerry of Hays, and Cherie Gottschalk and 
husband Travis of Hays, two brothers: Larry St. Peter and wife Marilyn 
of Lawrence and Steven St. Peter, eight grandchildren: Cassandra, 
Brandon, and Tyler Unrein, Taylor Wright and husband Christian, Sidney 
Simms, Laylah, Easton, and Aviana Gottschalk, his first great grandchild
 on the way, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three infant brothers.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Fr.
 Richard Daise officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.&nbsp;
 Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Monday and from 9:00 am 
until 9:45 on Tuesday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.&nbsp; A 
vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 pm on Monday at the funeral

Joseph LeRoy Haberman, 72, passed away April 28, 2022, at 
Medicalodges of Great Bend. He was born on September 19, 1949, at Great 
Bend, to Joseph L. &amp; Mary T. (Koester) Haberman.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Joseph was a member of Prince of 
Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church and a client of Sunflower 
Diversified Services.

Survivors include, a brother, Bill Haberman of Houston, Texas; 
several nieces and nephews, including Shelly Arnberger and Wendy 
Lockwood, both of Great Bend; and caretaker, Lisa Sterba and the rest of
 the Sunflower staff. He was preceded in death by his parents; two 
brothers, Robert Haberman and Bernard Haberman; and two sisters.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, May 5,
 2022 at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at

Joseph LeRoy Haberman

Lewis Arthur Hearn, 78, passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2022, after a 
short battle with lung cancer. He was born April 12, 1944, in Pratt, 
Kansas, to George Clay and Dora Martha (Hannawald) Hearn. Lewis
 married Janet Sue Chezem in Pratt, Kansas on September 1, 1973. They 
were married for 48 wonderful years. He was a lifetime member of the 
First United Methodist Church in Pratt. Lewis graduated Pratt 
High School in 1962. After high school he attended Pratt Community 
College, Wichita State University, and Ft. Hays State University. 
 Lewis was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and Kansas Army National 
Guard. While serving in Vietnam as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne 
and chaplain’s assistant, he earned a Bronze Star and Air Medal for 
meritorious service. Lewis performed small engine repairs at 
Hearn Sales and Service for many years. After that he enjoyed working in
 his extensive home shop creating small wooden building replicas for 
R&amp;R Creations. He ended his working career at First Care maintaining
 small health care appliances. Lewis was an exceptional 
woodworker, making heirloom quality furniture projects for both family 
and friends. He even remodeled his personal home to include making all 
of the kitchen cabinetry and constructing the three story 
garage/workshop. He was also passionate about building realistic model 
railroad cars and scenery. Lewis is survived by his wife, 
Janet; two sons, George Hearn of Arapahoe, Nebraska and David Hearn of 
Pratt; daughter, Sara Blubaugh (Joe) of Silver Lake, Kansas; 
grandchildren, Colton Hearn (Kearney, Nebraska), Quorra Hearn (Arapahoe,
 Nebraska), and Jaxon and Carly Blubaugh (Silver Lake, Kansas); sisters,
 Georgie (Hearn) Fowler and Rosalie (Hearn) and Richard Rose, both of 
Pratt; sister-in-law, Sandy (James) Riggs of Lincoln, Nebraska; and 
numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his 
parents, George and Dora Hearn and brother-in-law, John Fowler. 
 Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Friday, May 13, 2022, from
 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. with family present from 6-8 at Larrison 
Mortuary, 300 Country Club Road, Pratt. Memorial service will be held 
Saturday, May 14, 2022 at 1:30 p.m. at Larrison Mortuary. 
Memorials may be made to the Albert McFall Cancer Fund, First United 
Methodist Church of Pratt, or the Pratt Area Humane Society, in care of 
Larrison Mortuary. The family wishes to thank the staff of Grand Plains 
Skilled Nursing and Interim Health Care. Special appreciation is

Rose M. Rein, 76, passed away on April 26, 2022, at University of 
Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus, Great Bend, Kansas. She was 
born on August 30, 1945, at Park City, Kansas, to Edward &amp; Betty 
Uncapher. Rose married Robert Rein Sr. on September 21, 1962, at 
McCracken, Kansas.

Coming from McCracken, Rose was a Great Bend resident for over 50 
years. She worked for Kirby Co. of Great Bend as a bookkeeper, along 
with being a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Rein of the home; three sons, 
Robby Rein and Randy (Haley) Rein, both of Great Bend, and Russell 
(Sherry) Rein of Olathe; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; 
and a sister Becky Hill of Wichita. She was preceded in death by her 
parents; and two brothers, Don and Danny Uncapher.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorial 
service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, May 5, 2022, at Bryant 
Funeral Home. Inurnment will take place at McCracken Cemetery at a later
 date. 

Memorials have been designated to the Rose Rein Expense Fund, in
