Larry Gibson

Plainville - Vera Jane (Stoner) Glick, 96, passed away Sunday, May 8, 2022, at her home in Plainville. &nbsp;

Vera Jane was born February 23, 1926, the third daughter of Loyd and Vera (Claggett) Stoner.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was born and raised in Kirwin, Kansas, until her family moved to Plainville where she attended and graduated with the PHS class of 1944.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Vera Jane Stoner was united in marriage to Herbert W. Glick on June 5, 1944, in Boise, Idaho. This union was blessed with four children, Donald, Fred, Rodger and Shirley. The family spent most of their married life in Plainville.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She was a homemaker and accomplished seamstress, making clothes for her children and later her grandchildren.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Vera Jane enjoyed flower gardening, cooking and all kinds of crafting including in part,&nbsp;ceramics, ornaments for every occasion and crocheted items from refrigerator magnets to afghans, all of which her family were always included as being the lucky recipients. Vera Jane also enjoyed hunting and fishing for many years. Later in life she found joy and fellowship in playing cards, especially Texas Hold 'Em!&nbsp;

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Plainville, a member of the National WWII Museum and a life member of the VFW Auxiliary Post 8871 of which she held various offices over the years.&nbsp;

Vera Jane was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. 

She is survived by her four children, Donald (Verlene) Glick of Zurich, KS, Fred (Paula) Glick of Plainville, KS, Rodger (Geri) Glick of Parker, CO, and Shirley Steinert of Plainville, KS, eight grandchildren, Donald Glick, Jr., Ronald Glick, Hollie Gehring, Bryce Glick, Kristin Francis, Jason Glick, Makenzi Johnson, and Stuart Rempe, 18 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, a host of extended family and&nbsp;friends as well as&nbsp;last but not least, her beloved, loyal and constant companion, WeGo.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by include her mother, father, husband, three sisters Connie, Billy, LeAnne, one&nbsp;brother Harvey, and son-in-law Jim Steinert.&nbsp;

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 24, 2022, at Plainville United Methodist Church, 1002 Madison St., Plainville, KS, with Pastor Dennis Irwin officiating.&nbsp;&nbsp;Visitation will be held on Monday, May 23, 2022, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Plainville United Methodist Church.&nbsp;&nbsp;Burial will take place in the Plainville Cemetery, Plainville, KS. 

Memorials can be given to the Vera Jane Glick memorial fund; however, Vera would rather you pay something forward to someone of your choice.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sandra “Sandy” Jane Kaiser was born Jan. 4, 1963, in Hays to Bradley and Leila (Knapp) Hall. She passed away May 10, 2022, in Kearney, Neb.

Sandy grew up in Utica, and Tuba City, Ariz., before moving to Woodruff in high school. She was a 1981 graduate of Northern Valley High School. After high school, she and Charley went on to attend NWKTC in Goodland, where she studied to be a cosmetologist.

Sandy married Charley Kaiser on April 23, 1983, in Long Island, Kan. Together they raised two boys, Chris and Carson. Sandy worked for Nex-Tech in the accounts receivable department and then later in the warehouse. For the last 15 years, she has worked for Natoma Manufacturing in Norton. In her spare time, Sandy loved spending time with her family.

Sandy was preceded in death by her father, Bradley Hall. She is survived by her husband, Charley of Lenora; mother, Leila Hall of Kearney, Neb.; sons, Chris Kaiser of Oberlin, and Carson Kaiser of Oklahoma City; brother, Perry (Amber) Hall of Paragould, Ariz., and sisters, Laura (Norris) Chee of Paragould, Ark., and Tammy (Mike) Shinn of Dwight, Kan.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 16 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Woodruff Cemetery in Woodruff. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday before the service.

Sandra 'Sandy' Jane Kaiser

Jo Jordan, 84, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2022, at River Bend Assisted Living in Great Bend. She was born on Oct. 7, 1937, at Great Bend to Wesley and Evelyn Miller. She married Clifford R. Jordan on Aug. 30, 1959, at Great Bend.&nbsp;

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Jo was a sales rep for Avon for many years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and then First Christian Church. Jo worked as a church visitor, sharing her smile with the homebound and elderly. She also enjoyed caring for children in her later years. Jo was a true friend to all she met and was a dedicated follower of the Lord.

Survivors include two sons, Scott Jordan and wife Heather of Englewood, Colo., and Michael Jordan and wife Kathy of Hutchinson; and three grandchildren, Caroline Jordan, Grant Jordan and Jordyn Pratt. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Clifford Jordan.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, May 16 at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 17 at First Christian Church with Reverend Josh Leu presiding.

The interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery. 

Memorials have been designated to First Christian Church, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Barbara Jean Fiser Ruliffson, 72, of Manhattan, passed away Tuesday, May 10, with family by her side. &nbsp; Barbara was born in Manhattan on March 26, 1950, a daughter of the late Vivian R (Bamer) and Ladek (Lud) C. Fiser. She was united in marriage to Mark H. Ruliffson on August 20, 1970, and celebrated 52 years of marriage. Barb was a member of the Manhattan Church of Christ and served faithfully as their administrative assistant for 14 years. Prior to that, Barb was an accomplished first-grade school teacher at Roosevelt Elementary School in Hays.&nbsp; Barbara especially enjoyed spending time with her six grandchildren, gardening, traveling with Mark, and walking her two labrador retrievers, Bailey and Aspen. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 15 at the Manhattan Church of Christ, 2510 Dickens Ave. The funeral service will also be at 10 a.m. Monday, May 16 at the Manhattan Church of Christ, with a visitation starting at 9 a.m. until service time. Barbara Jean Fiser Ruliffson

Lawrence Alphonse Fellhoelter, age 90, died on May 10, 2022, in Great Bend, Kansas at his home in Brookdale Assisted Living Center.  He was born on July 25, 1931, in Oakley, Kansas the son of Herman and Odella (Comeau) Fellhoelter, Sr.

Larry was a United States Air Force veteran having served in the Korean War from 1950 to 1954.  He earned the rank of Staff Sargent while serving with a medic transport group.  On June 30, 1955, he married Mary Lee Jobe in Hays.  She preceded him in death on April 18, 2008. Larry held many occupations while in Ness City, but he was well known as the grocer at Larry’s IGA which he owned and operated for twelve years.  Larry married Sherry Fernetti on November 13, 2009, in Great Bend.  She preceded him in death on January 21, 2019.

Larry is survived by his son, Chuck Fellhoelter and his wife, Belinda; two grandchildren, Charlie Fellhoelter and Chelsea Walecki; and two great grandchildren, Boston and Paisley Walecki all of Great Bend; and two nephews, Andy Fellhoelter and wife, Kim, and Pat Fellhoelter and wife, Annetta all of Ness City whom he helped raise and mentor for many years; two brothers, Leland Fellhoelter and his wife, Carol, of Olathe,KS, and Melvin Fellhoelter and his wife, Elizabeth, of Medina, Ohio; two sisters, Pauline Westhusing and her husband, Eldon, of Hays and Doris Hale and her husband, Bill, of Shickley, Nebraska; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Larry in death are his parents, both wives, and three brothers, Herman Jr., Donald, and Dennis Fellhoelter, sister-in-law, Sharon Fellhoelter and nephew Bryce Fellhoelter.

The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2022, 10:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church, Ness City followed by burial in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Viewing will be at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City on Friday, May 13, 2022, from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. with rosary starting at 6:30 p.m. followed by visitation.

Lifelong Kirwin resident Hilda C. Weems passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2022, at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg at the age of 85.

She was born Nov. 18, 1936, in Kirwin, the daughter of Joseph and Velma (Cales) Stoner.&nbsp; She graduated from Kirwin High School.

Hilda was united in marriage to Charles Weems on April 13, 1954, in Phillipsburg.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on Sept. 7, 1999.

Survivors include her daughter Tisha Lynn Bohl and James Melvin of Kirwin; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 17 in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Michael Ricci-Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in the Kirwin Cemetery, Kirwin.

Mrs. Weems will lie in state from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 2 to 9 p.m. Monday in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Monday for visitation in the funeral chapel.

George Paul Korobka, 74, of Hays, passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2022, as the result of an automobile 
accident in rural Phillips County.

The funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m.

George Paul Korobka

Betty Lou Ashley, 79, passed away May 10, 2022, at Azria Health Woodhaven in Great Bend.

She was born Sept. 3, 1942, in Yuma, Ariz., the daughter of Lester Ervin and Rose Lee Pebsworth Patton.

Moving from Texas and later Great Bend, she was a Larned resident since 1964. She was co-owner of Dairy Queen in Larned with her husband Ernie and a charter member of the First Southern Baptist Church where she was involved in many activities from Sunday school to vacation Bible school. She was an avid doll collector and member of various doll clubs. She enjoyed making ceramics, sewing, painting, crafting, and spoiling her grandkids and great-grandkids.

On Nov. 10, 1959, she married Ernest A. Ashley at Perryton, Texas; he survives.

Other survivors include a son, Duane Ashley, Larned; two daughters, Suzan (Jim) Haynes, and Sandi Bartz, both of Larned; seven grandchildren, Michael (Jessie) Ashley, Bermerton, Wash., Jordan (Sarah) Haynes, Bixby, Okla., Tyler Ashley, Kansas City, Mo., Kaitlyn (Casey) Hatfield, Larned, Jeromy Bartz, Lincoln, Neb., Brandon Bartz, Hays, Trevor Bartz, Larned; seven great-grandchildren, Kaira Haynes, Josiah Haynes, Judah Haynes, Ariella Haynes, Colby Hatfield, Collins Hatfield, and Holden Ashley.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Ernest Lester Ashley; son-in-law, Michael Bartz; brother, Jerry Patton; sister, Sue Sharp; and granddaughter, Laura Ashley.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 14 at First Southern Baptist Church, Larned, with Pastor Cecil Dale presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, May 13 at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery.

Betty Lou Ashley

Delores Lorraine Strecker Uhrich, 87, passed away May 11, 2022, under her loving family’s care at her granddaughter, Brooke’s, house in Halstead.

She was born on Feb. 17, 1935, in Victoria to Nicholas and Rose (Dreiling) Braun. Delores attended Brown Mackie College where she met Leon Strecker. They were married on April 23, 1955, in Ellinwood. He died Aug. 12, 1992. She then married Cletus Uhrich on March 11, 2000, in Great Bend. He died Dec. 19, 2011.

A longtime Great Bend resident, Delores was a bookkeeper for several area oilfield companies. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar Society, Daughters of Isabella, Great Bend Desk and Derrick, and enjoyed playing bridge. Delores especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Monty Strecker and wife Catherine of Ellinwood, Julie Bauman and husband Carl of Great Bend, and Carrie Bridges and husband Kirk of Halstead; two brothers, Francis Braun of Titusville, Fla., and Darrell Braun and wife Mignon of Odessa, Texas; 12 grandchildren, Jacob Strecker (Andrea), Nicklaus Strecker (Laura), Rachel Strecker (Shameem), Rebecca Smith (Jordon), Joanna Strecker, Amanda Clarke, Ashlee Meyerhoff (Kurt), Zachary Bauman (Hailey), Brooke Panzer (Jarrod), Brandy Mabry (Zack), Bryon Bridges (Stephanie) and Bradley Bridges (Maddie) and 31 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Nick Braun Jr.; a sister, Freida Rychlec; a sister-in-law, Millie Braun; and two great-grandchildren, Elyjah Bridges and McCoy Smith.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, May 16, 2022, at Bryant Funeral Home, with an Altar Society Rosary at 4 p.m. and Vigil service and Daughters of Isabella Rosary at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 17, 2022, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with Father Aneesh Parappanattu presiding and Father Nicholas Voelker concelebrating.

Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery.

Delores Lorraine Strecker Uhrich

Greta G. Foster, 80, passed away May 10, 2022, at Country Place Senior Living in Hoisington. She was born March 1, 1942, in Norton to Wayne and Lilly (Thiesen) Heany.

She married Gordon Brantley in June 1964 and they later divorced. She then married Gary L. Foster on August 27, 1983. He died on April 16, 2000.

In 1976, Greta and Gordon moved to Great Bend when they bought Cook &amp; Weber Funeral Home. Greta spent 18 years as an office technology instructor at Barton Community College. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and spent many years volunteering for the Barton County Fair. Greta had a very caring heart and was always willing to help anyone in need. She enjoyed gardening and animals. Greta especially loved spending time with her family.

Survivors include her twins, Dr. Scott Brantley and fiancé Chandra Espinosa and Dr. Sherri Brantley all of Great Bend; a sister, Glenda Kramer and husband Fritz of Ellis; seven grandchildren, Austin Brantley (Molly), Gracie McGinnes (Brook), TeeJay Janousek (Megan), Cayton Janousek (Megan), Steele Brack, Kian Espinosa and Alaina Espinosa; and five great-grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; spouses, Gordon Brantley and Gary Foster; and siblings, Gerald Wonderlich and Gerri Carper.

There will be no services as cremation has taken place. There will be a come and go for family and friends at Scott’s house, 132 NW 60 Road, Great Bend, on Sunday, May 15, 2022, from 1 to 4 p.m.

A private family inurnment will take place at the Getty’s Cemetery in Clayton. Memorials have been designated to the Barton County Fair, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Lifelong Phillips County resident Gary Morrison passed away Monday, May 9th, 2022, at his home in Phillipsburg at the age of 65.

Gary was born December 23, 1956, in Phillipsburg, KS the son of Charles and Mollie (Lee) Morrison.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Anita Niederhaus.

Survivors include his brother Ronald Morrison and wife Beverly of Phillipsburg; sister Jolinda Miller and husband David of Lakewood, CO; brother-in-law Jerry Niederhaus of Lake Havasu City, AZ; along with many nieces and nephews.

Cremation was planned.  A memorial service will be Monday, May 16, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Michael Kennedy officiating.  The services will be streamed live on the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel Facebook page.  Inurnment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Donald Dean Mason passed away on May 10, 2022, at the Phillips County Retirement Center in Phillipsburg at the age of 89. He was the second child born on the family farm in Rooks County on Feb. 24, 1933, to Charles Frances and Bernita Mildred (Camp) Mason. Don grew up in Rooks County and started his education at a country school, New Hope, before attending Stockton High School and graduating with the class of 1950. Immediately following high school, Don moved to Wichita, where he worked several jobs before landing a job as an insurance agent for City Service Insurance. The company moved him to Oklahoma City, and he worked until his retirement at 55.

Don met his life partner, Richard Shonts, and the couple moved to Tampa, Fla., and bought a motel. They later sold the motel in 1988 and moved back to Oklahoma, following his father’s passing to be closer to his mother. Don loved spending time with his family; his mother’s cooking was his favorite. He was a kind and soft-spoken man who enjoyed his time with family and partner. He found joy in thunderstorms, dancing and teaching others how to dance as well as any sporting event. He is survived by his sister, Kay (Bob) Riffel of Stockton. Don is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Bernita Mason; life partner, Richard Shonts; and siblings, Robert (Doris) Mason and Marvel (Joe) Yoxall. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 13, 2022, at Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home in Stockton. Donald Dean Mason

Freda Bell Sutton, age 95, of Sylvan Grove, Kansas, was born on June 21st, 1926, in Liberal, Kansas, to James M. Lewis and Jesse E. (Cone) Lewis.&nbsp; She was number 8 in line of 10 children and by the time she was born her parents were letting the older siblings name the younger ones, one of her older brothers happened to have a girlfriend named Freda. She was the first to be born in a hospital because she was born near wheat harvest and her farmer father didn’t have time to tend to her mother.

She grew up on a farm in the Oklahoma panhandle, in the Baker community on land that had been in the Lewis family.&nbsp; She lived in that home until she married then returned to it later to raise her family there for a time.&nbsp; When she was 4 years old, she wanted to go to town with her dad, but he said no.&nbsp; Determined to go anyway, she squatted on her knees on the running boards of his 1928 Nash and rode 20 miles to Liberal because she was wanting new shoes and some candy.&nbsp; She did get candy, a dad that collapsed and had to go to the hospital and a headline in the Wichita Beacon Newspaper.

On July 4, 1943, she told her parents she was going to a rodeo but instead eloped to Tucumcari, New Mexico, to marry the love of her life, Robert Lee Sutton.&nbsp; He passed away on October 1st, 2001, after 58 years of marriage. This union was blessed with 3 children: Geraldine (Delvin-deceased) Simmons; Margaret (Jerry) Barlow; Lonnie Sutton. One of her greatest joys was her family especially her 7 grandchildren: Tamie Simmons-deceased; Barry (Leslie) Barlow; Stacey (Debbie) Simmons; Jera Chovanec; Brady (Denise) Barlow; Shannon (Shawn) Henderson; Amanda (Corey) Uhl.&nbsp; Her pride and joy were her Great Grandchildren: Tyler (Caitlin) Simmons; Gabe Addington; Trever Simmons; Joey (Kaylie) Addington;&nbsp; Haupe (Derrick) Lanham; Caleb (Danica) Uhl; Ryanne Henderson; Preston (Corinne) Chovanec; Colten Uhl; Reese (Kayli) Chovanec; Bailey Barlow; Mackinzie Simmons; Cade Uhl; Bode Barlow; Elise Barlow; Rhett Barlow; Addison Barlow. She was also proud to have 11 GREAT-GREAT Grandchildren. She has one surviving sibling, Helen Parnell, her daily “words with friends” buddy on the internet.

Freda spent her life involved with her family’s activities; she had even attended ballgames of some of the great-great grandchildren.&nbsp; She was her family’s biggest supporter.&nbsp; She spent her life being a homemaker and there was never a white glove test that her house couldn’t pass.&nbsp; She was an amazing cook and is famous in the family for her hot rolls, chicken and homemade noodles, enchiladas and chocolate pies.&nbsp; Freda would be known to spend the morning cooking for the harvest hands and the afternoon hauling grain to the elevator, working just as long and as hard as the men. She was the master of crossword puzzles and could beat anyone at the Wheel of Fortune. Freda had a green thumb unlike any other.&nbsp; She could grow flowers anywhere, in fact, one year a volunteer petunia grew in the crack of her driveway to prove that fact.&nbsp; She was the Queen of cards, and she taught her grandchildren and most of her great-grandchildren to play spades. She never sat still for very long (unless she had her ipad in hand) even well into her 90s. She had a quick wit and was still cracking jokes on the day she passed.

Freda leaves behind a legacy of love.&nbsp; She was the cornerstone of her family and gave an abundance of unconditional love.&nbsp; She has shaped many lives/families by her example and will be forever missed.

Graveside services will be held in Oklahoma at a later date.&nbsp; Memorials are suggested to&nbsp;Ellsworth County Medical Center, in care of the Funeral Chapel.

She was the first to be born in a hospital because she was born near wheat harvest and her farmer father didn’t have time to tend to her mother.She grew up on a farm in the Oklahoma panhandle, in the Baker community on land that had been in the Lewis family.&nbsp; She lived in that home until she married then returned to it later to raise her family there for a time.&nbsp; When she was 4 years old, she wanted to go to town with her dad, but he said no.&nbsp; Determined to go anyway, she squatted on her knees on the running boards of his 1928 Nash and rode 20 miles to Liberal because she was wanting new shoes and some candy.&nbsp; She did get candy, a dad that collapsed and had to go to the hospital and a headline in the Wichita Beacon Newspaper.On July 4, 1943, she told her parents she was going to a rodeo but instead eloped to Tucumcari, New Mexico, to marry the love of her life, Robert Lee Sutton.&nbsp; He passed away on October 1st, 2001, after 58 years of marriage. This union was blessed with 3 children: Geraldine (Delvin-deceased) Simmons; Margaret (Jerry) Barlow; Lonnie Sutton. One of her greatest joys was her family especially her 7 grandchildren: Tamie Simmons-deceased; Barry (Leslie) Barlow; Stacey (Debbie) Simmons; Jera Chovanec; Brady (Denise) Barlow; Shannon (Shawn) Henderson; Amanda (Corey) Uhl.&nbsp; Her pride and joy were her Great Grandchildren: Tyler (Caitlin) Simmons; Gabe Addington; Trever Simmons; Joey (Kaylie) Addington;&nbsp; Haupe (Derrick) Lanham; Caleb (Danica) Uhl; Ryanne Henderson; Preston (Corinne) Chovanec; Colten Uhl; Reese (Kayli) Chovanec; Bailey Barlow; Mackinzie Simmons; Cade Uhl; Bode Barlow; Elise Barlow; Rhett Barlow; Addison Barlow. She was also proud to have 11 GREAT-GREAT Grandchildren. She has one surviving sibling, Helen Parnell, her daily “words with friends” buddy on the internet.Freda spent her life involved with her family’s activities; she had even attended ballgames of some of the great-great grandchildren.&nbsp; She was her family’s biggest supporter.&nbsp; She spent her life being a homemaker and there was never a white glove test that her house couldn’t pass.&nbsp; She was an amazing cook and is famous in the family for her hot rolls, chicken and homemade noodles, enchiladas and chocolate pies.&nbsp; Freda would be known to spend the morning cooking for the harvest hands and the afternoon hauling grain to the elevator, working just as long and as hard as the men. She was the master of crossword puzzles and could beat anyone at the Wheel of Fortune. Freda had a green thumb unlike any other.&nbsp; She could grow flowers anywhere, in fact, one year a volunteer petunia grew in the crack of her driveway to prove that fact.&nbsp; She was the Queen of cards, and she taught her grandchildren and most of her great-grandchildren to play spades. She never sat still for very long (unless she had her ipad in hand) even well into her 90s. Allen A. Lehmann, 77, passed away Saturday, April 2, 2022, at Smith County Memorial Hospital, Smith Center, KS. 
 Allen was born December 31, 1944, in Smith Center, KS, the son of 
Alvin Reinhold Wilhelm and Alma Von (Frieling) Lehmann.&nbsp; On August 17, 
1969, he married Gladys O'Connor at St. John Lutheran Church, Athol, 
KS.&nbsp; Allen was a United States Army Veteran serving from June 22, 1967,&nbsp;
 to January 24, 1969, when he was honorably discharged. &nbsp;&nbsp;He was a 
member of American Lutheran Church, VFW Post 1141 and Smith Center 
Country Golf Club all of Smith Center, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents, and three sisters, Irene Meyer, Thadene Haas, and Lavern Meyer.

Todd (Amy) Lehmann of Woodinville, WA; two sisters, Wilma (Denis) Sweat 
and June Homan, and two grandchildren. A celebration of

Carol Jean Wood, 74, of Russell, Kansas, died on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at the Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell.

Carol was born on October 2, 1947, in Hays, Kansas, the daughter of John and Marge (Henn) Johnson. &nbsp;She grew up in Hays and graduated from Hays High School. &nbsp;After high school she attended Ft. Hays University where she met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Gale Ray Wood on June 3, 1967, in&nbsp;Ellis, Kansas. &nbsp;From this union Carol and Gale were blessed with two children a son Kelly and daughter Cindy. &nbsp;The family lived in several towns in Kansas and eventually moved closer to home and moved to Russell in 2000. &nbsp;She was a very artistic person and&nbsp;enjoyed working with various crafts, scrap booking photo albums and cake decorating. &nbsp;She also enjoyed sewing and making clothes for her children and her&nbsp;daughters&nbsp;dolls. &nbsp;Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and especially enjoyed time with her children and grandchildren.

Surviving family include her daughter Cindy Jury and husband Rod of Russell, Kansas; brothers Tom Johnson and wife Joyce of Hays, Kansas; sisters Leigh&nbsp;Mabb&nbsp;and husband Gary of Ellis County, Kansas, Becki Johnson&nbsp;of&nbsp;St. Paul, Nebraska&nbsp;and Chris Dietz and husband Perry of Ellis County, Kansas; granddaughter Sadie Wood and husband Bobby Elliott of Russell, Kansas and great grandchildren Ronan Elliott and Hayden Ruiz. &nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gale on November 04, 2020&nbsp;and son Kelly Ray Wood.

Rowena Arlene Sheraden, 90, passed away May 6, 2022, at County Living Memory Care in Larned.

She was born September 17, 1931, in Larned, the daughter of Charles and Lillian Clark Dipman.

Returning to the area from Wichita in 2015, she was of the Christian 
Faith. She worked as a secretary for Midland Supply and was also a 
school teacher.

On September 30, 1961, Robert Sheraden in Larned; he preceded her in death on October 8, 2015.

Survivors include two brothers, Damon Dipman, Holly, Colorado, and Allen (Mary) Dipman, Larned.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother, Donald Dipman.

Graveside Service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 2022, at Larned
 Cemetery with Pastor Daryl Riffel presiding. Visitation will be 9:00 
a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, May 13, at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial 
will be in the Larned Cemetery.

Robert L. Stockton was born December 24, 1940, to Leo B. and Neva 
Billings Stockton. He was born in Smith Center, KS and lived in the 
Kensington area for his entire life. He attended Hardilee Rural School, 
Kensington Grade School, and graduated from Kensington High School in 
1958. He attended Fort Hays State University and served in Kansas 
National Guard.
 On June 4, 1961, he married Margaret Rayburn Gilliland in 
Phillipsburg. Their daughter Katherine Ann (“Anne”) was born December 
26, 1965. Sadly she preceded her parents in death in June 1985 at the 
age of nineteen. Margaret passed away October 13, 2009.
 Bob and Margaret were very involved with Anne’s sports and 
activities. They were always very supportive of Anne’s friends and all 
youth in the community.
 Bob was a farmer his entire life. He was a very creative person. He 
could build and fix anything. His projects included beautiful furniture,
 working on farm equipment, doing carpentry and many other things. At 
one point, he built a train from barrels for the children of the 
Kensington community. He loved antique cars and would often participate 
in local parades and car shows. Restoring antique cars was a hobby of 
his.
 Bob is survived by his Sisters, Shirley Powell and Sharlene (John) 
Sampson, Nephews Mike (Ramona) Powell and Gary (Wendy) Powell and Niece 
Sharlyn (Chris) DeWeese. Many members of the Gilliland Family also 
survive him. Bob is survived by his dear dear friends Annette and Tim 
Riley. The Family wants to thank the Rileys (Annette, Tim) and Sherry 
Newbrey for all they have done as friends and caretakers. He was also 
preceded in death by his parents, Infant brother Kenneth (1936), 
Margaret’s parents Edwin and Florence (Dixon) Gilliland, Brother-in- Law
 Jack Powell and many members of the Gilliland Family. Many cousins who 
were dearly loved.

Charles O. Stones, 96, died Sunday, May 8, 2022, at St. Catherine 
Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. He was born February 25, 1926, on the 
family farm in Smith County, Kansas, the son of Glen &amp; Henrietta 
(Steward) Stones. 
 Charles started teaching in one-room country schools in Smith 
County right out of Lebanon High School with a “Normal Training” 
background. After many summer schools and correspondence courses at 
Fort Hays State University, Charles earned a Bachelor’s degree and a 
Master’s degree in Education. On May 1, 1949, he married Ardith Nadine 
Craig in McDonald, Kansas. They lived in Bird City, Ks., St. John, Ks.,
 and Hugoton, Ks., before moving to Garden City in 1973. They have 
lived in Garden City since. Charles taught school while living in Bird 
City. He became Elementary Principal in St. John and Hugoton. Charles 
then went on to become Assistant Superintendent for Instruction for 
Garden City Public Schools until his retirement on June 29, 1991. He 
also served 1 year as Interim Superintendent for USD #457 in Garden 
City. The Charles O. Stones Intermediate Center in Garden City is a 
tribute to his contribution to the education of students in the Garden 
City district. 
 Charles was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Garden
 City where he served as a Sunday School Teacher. He was also a member 
of the Builder’s Sunday School Class, Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo, the
 Finney County Library, Western Kansas Community Foundation, the Masonic
 Lodge, and served for many years as a director of Peoples State Bank of
 McDonald, Colby, and Manhattan. He loved to spend his time collecting 
bells, gardening, bird watching, and spending time with his children, 
grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. 
 Survivors include two daughters Judy &amp; husband Rich Steinbrink 
of Garden City and Gaynelle Beasley of Garden City; a brother Harold 
&amp; wife Patty Stones of Topeka, Kansas; four grandchildren Brynn 
&amp; husband Jim Shellenberger, Melissa &amp; husband Alex Stofer, 
Mekayla &amp; Husband Dustin Petrus, &amp; Britny Sweeney; and six 
great-grandchildren Keely, Kambri, Kaia, Isaiah, Kolby, &amp; Brody.

Charles O. Stones

Gary Leroy Butler was born May 19th, 1940, to James and Madeline Butler in Chadron, NE. When he was only five years old, his mother passed away and he went to live with his paternal grandparents, T.J. and Grace Butler in Chadron, Nebraska. Gary grew up working in their large garden with his grandmother and grandfather. A trout stream ran through their farm, so Gary had an early start for his love of fishing.

Gary graduated from Chadron High School in 1958, where he was a star quarterback for the football team.

He joined the U.S. Navy and served from 1960-1964 before returning to Nebraska, where he worked and attended Chadron College. He received a Master's Degree in School Administration. He married Shirley Johnson, a young widow with three little boys.  Gary was a devoted father, raising Larry, Jerry and Gene along with the twins, Tim and Tara, who were born to his union with Shirley.

Gary loved sports, serving as a coach at the high school in Agra, Kansas, where he taught business classes in addition to his coaching duties. later he began his banking career. He began at the Farmers National Bank in Agra, preceded to Rocky Ford, Colorado, then moving to Milan, Missouri, and Savannah, Missouri. 

Gary married Wilma Gower in the Methodist Church in Agra December 16. 1979. They enjoyed 42 years together. After his retirement in January of 2001, Gary and Wilma moved to a rural home by Trimble, Missouri, near Smithville Lake, where he could indulge full time in his passion for fishing. They joined the Methodist Church in Paradise and were active members there. Gary also enjoyed playing pool and sharing food at the Senior Center in Smithville.

Gary passed away peacefully at his home on May 1, 2022. He is survived by his wife, Wilma; his sons Larry (Gail), Jerry, Gene (Danette), and Tim (Amy), and his daughter Tara. Other family members include eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, his brothers, Dale, Scott, Curt and Criss.

His memory will be cherished by his many friends and family members.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, May 14, at 10:30 a.m. in the West Cedar Cemetery with Rev. Rob Ernest officiating with Military Honors by the Agra American Legion.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Paradise United Methodist Church or the Trimble, MO Fire Dept.

When he was only five years old, his mother passed away and he went to live with his paternal grandparents, T.J. and Grace Butler in Chadron, Nebraska. Gary L. Butler

Thomas Alfred Lewand Jr., age 82, of 
Ellis, Kansas passed away Friday, May 6, 2022, at Trego Lemke Memorial 
Hospital in WaKeeney, Kansas. He was born May 10, 1939, in Denver, 
Colorado, to Thomas Alfred and Margaret (Youngster) Lewand. He graduated 
from Bethany college and earned a Masters from Fort Hays State 
University.

Thomas was a longtime music teacher 
having taught for 4 years at Kensington, 13 years at La Crosse and 3 
years at Sedgwick. After his teaching career Thomas worked as a 
salesclerk at Von Maur and Dillards. Thomas enjoyed antiques, musicals 
and especially operas.

He is survived by a son, Thomas “Tony” Lewand of Houston, Texas and a daughter, Tara Frey of Ellis.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date. Arrangements in care of Keithley Funeral Chapel in Ellis.

Thomas Alfred Lewand Jr.

Randy L. Miller, 68, passed away May 7, 2022, at Hays Medical Center, Hays.

He was born November 26, 1953, in Denver, Colorado, the son of Donald Richard Miller and Beatrice “Pat” Drill Stonebreaker.

A longtime area resident, he was an electrician at Larned State 
Hospital. He was in the United States Navy where he served on the 
submarine USS Patrick Henry. He was a member of the First United 
Methodist Church, Great Bend and he enjoyed square dancing and 
woodworking.

On May 19, 2007 he married Judith Nemechek McCune at Great Bend; she survives.

Other survivors include: his mother, Patricia Stonebreaker, Great 
Bend; two brothers, David John Miller, Omaha, Nebraska, Bernard “Bernie”
 Neil Miller, Boise, Idaho; sister, Patricia Wheeler, Albuquerque, New 
Mexico; step-daughter, Juliana (Max) Murphy, Manhattan, Kansas; 
step-son, Wayne Eberle, Largo, Florida; five step grandchildren, two 
step-great grandchildren, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and 
nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Richard Keith Miller.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.

Memorials may be given to the Pawnee County Humane Society or Wounded
 Warrior Project in care of Beckwith Mortuary, PO Box 477, Larned,

Carol (Dyer) Blackwell was born on Sept 26, 1938, to Denny &amp; Fern Dyer in Lucas, KS.
 Carol went to all twelve grades at Lucas, KS graduating the class of
 1956. Following high school Carol joined the United States Air Force. 
She did her basic training at Lackland Air Base in San Antonio, TX. She 
studied in key punch. After basic she went to Kansas City to Richards 
Gebaur air base where she met her future husband Eugene E. Blackwell. 
They were married on Sept 28, 1958. They would have celebrated 50 years 
on Sept 28, 2008. Carol worked for the Air Force as a civilian.
 In 1963 Blackie had orders to go to Guam. They spent 2 years there. 
They came back and finished his service at Travis Air Base in 
California. Retiring there and moving back to the Kansas City area. 
Carol worked for the IRS in Kansas City.
 In 1974, the Blackwells purchased a home in Lucas. Blackie worked in 
Osborne &amp; Russell. Carol liked to cook and was a very good cook. 
They enjoyed living in Lucas. They opened Blackies Pub and ran it for a 
few years before selling it to Gene &amp; Linda Jepsen. Blackie passed 
away on April 16, 2008. Carol maintained their home there.
 Carol’s health started to decline in later years. She passed away on January 18, 2022.
 Carol was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Blackie; 
sister Barbara; brothers Chester &amp; Billy; Sister in laws Ruby &amp; 
Joyce; her nephew Billy G Dyer Jr.
 She is survived by her sister Mary (Jim) Williamson, her nephews 
Mike, Denny, John, Jeff, and Jay. Numerous great &amp; great great 
nephews. Her nieces Marcia, Cathy, Becky, Terri, and Susan. Numerous 
great &amp; great nieces. She will be solely missed by all that knew 
her.
