Andora Lucille “Toni” Snell, 99, died on Thursday, June 16, 2022, at her 
home in Topeka. She was born on March 22, 1923, in Wichita the daughter 
of Richmond Carroll &amp; Nancy Estella (Roper) Strickland. She married
 Walter W. Snell on June 26, 1944, in Wichita. He died on December 14, 
2006. 
While growing up Toni lived in several places before graduating from 
Dodge City High School and attending Kansas State University. She moved
 to California and did clerical work and then moved to Wichita during 
World War II and worked at Cessna. She and Walter moved to Garden City 
in 1949 where he pursued his career in farming. Toni was a homemaker but
 also held several clerical positions. In her free time she volunteered 
for many local organizations. She was a member of the First United 
Methodist Church of Garden City, Ks and was involved in her Builders 
Sunday School class, bible study and UMW circles. She also belonged to 
the Acorn Club and the Epsilon Sigma Alpha social sorority. Toni 
enjoyed bridge, ceramics, painting, her flower garden, crossword 
puzzles and reading Christian Literature. 
She is survived by her Daughters- Sharrie Wartell of Topeka and Susan 
Grothusen (Dave) of Scott City, 3 Grandchildren- Brent Wartell (Jenifer 
Colpitts), Jana Harden (Julia Kizzar) and Ashley Goss (Loren), 7 
Great-Grandchildren and 3 Great-Great-Grandchildren. She is preceded in
 death by her Parents, Husband, Grandson- Thomas Wartell, 3 Brothers and
 5 Sisters. 
Funeral Service will be at 10:00 AM Monday at First United Methodist 
Church with Rev Joel Plisek officiating. The service will be 
livestreamed on the Garnand Funeral Home facebook page. Burial will be 
in Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Friends may call from 1:00 PM 
to 8:00 PM Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home.

Thomas John “Tom” Bohm, 78, Hays, died Thursday, June 16, 2022, at his home.

He was born November 22, 1943, in 
Salina, the son of Claire Louise (Schwerman) Bohm.&nbsp; In 1960, he 
graduated from Sacred Heart High School.&nbsp; He was united in marriage to 
Debbie Walters on June 30, 1978, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays, 
and were married nearly 44 years.&nbsp; Tom owned and operated Kansas 
Precision Contact Lens, Bohm’s Bike Shop, and Bohm’s Coffee Shop.&nbsp; He 
was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, a former member of the Hays 
Optimist Club, and was co-founder and coach of the Hays Striders Track 
Club.&nbsp; Tom enjoyed bicycling, visiting with everyone, and teaching 
religion at Kennedy Middle School and TMP-Marian High School.&nbsp; He was an
 avid golfer, devout Catholic, and most of all, loved his family.

Survivors include his wife Debbie of 
Hays, a son: Matthew Bohm and wife Chelse of Overland Park, two 
daughters: Sarah Mackey and husband Todd of Hays and Claire Ludes and 
husband John of Salina, 12 grandchildren: Heather Tipton and husband 
Joh, Thomas “TJ” Glass, Anthony Bohm, Alexis Mackey, Carter Bohm, Kaylee
 Bohm, Peyton Mackey, Michael Mackey, Greyson Mullen, Boe Ludes, Zane 
Sims, and Addison Sims, and two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother,
 three sons: Thomas, Sean, and John Bohm, and two daughters: Dawn Bohm 
and Stacy Bohm-McCann.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Monday, June 20, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr.

John Billinger

Stanley M. Schremmer, age 73, passed away suddenly but peacefully at his home on Monday June 13, 2022. Born July 12, 1948, to John and Marie (Hlavaty) Schremmer. He married Nancy (Ochs) on November 18, 1972, in Hoisington, Kansas. Stan was raised on a farm in rural Barton County, KS. After graduating from Hoisington high school Stan joined the US Navy where he fought and served honorably in the Vietnam War.&nbsp; Upon returning home from his service duty Stan attended Barton County Community College, Emporia State University and earned a bachelor degree from Fort Hays State University. He also began farming for his father-in-law where he invented and patented a round bale spear attachment that would allow a tractor to move round bales with a Front End loader without requiring the bucket to be removed. After selling the patent, Stan enjoyed a long and successful career in various manufacturing management roles. At the time of his death, Stan was the Environmental Health and Safety Manager for Enersys of Hays.&nbsp; Stan had a passion for horseback riding and together with his family owned and operated the Rocking S Arena on his property north of Walker, Kansas. Although he hosted several different equestrian events at this arena, it is best known for the daily horseback lessons given to dozens of local area children over the years. Stan is survived by his wife Nancy Schremmer of the home, son Ryan Schremmer of Gorham, Kansas, daughter Amy Summers and husband Shawn of Hays, Kansas, grandchildren, Olivia Schremmer of Gorham, Landon, Stanna, Kamryn, and Jayla Summers all of Hays, and his two sisters, Connie Pickert of Kansas City and Mary Jeanette Smith and husband Walt of Richmond, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Galen Schremmer, and a brother-in-law, Duane Pickert. Sadie Jo Louise Arnet, 27, of Russell, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Friday, June 10, 2022.

Sadie was born March 30, 1995, in Hays, Kansas, the daughter of Fred and Angie (Kaufman) Arnet. She grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in the Class of 2013. She graduated from Fort Hays State University with a Bachelor Degree in Social Work. She then attended and graduated from the University of Kansas with a Master’s Degree in Social Work. While in school she had an internship with St. Francis Ministries; after school she continued her employment with St. Francis Ministries as an Integration case worker and for the last year or so was an Adoption Specialist.

Sadie was known for her great sense of humor, her enjoyment of fishing, traveling, swimming and spending time at the lake, collecting music concert band t-shirts, being with her family and friends, and taking care of her families and “her kids” at work. She had no children of her own, but had hopes of adopting several sometime in the future.

Surviving family include her parents, Fred and Angie Arnet of Russell, Kansas; three sisters, Rose Bender, Lee Arnet and Erica Arnet all of Russell, Kansas; three brothers, Nicholas Arnet, Elias Arnet and Benjamin Arnet all of Russell, Kansas; nephew Jaxon Arnet-Prewitt; and four nieces, Vanessa Arnet-Lazono, Alexandra Arnet-James, Madelynn Arnet-James and Isabella Arnet-James.

Sadie was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother Norma Jean Rupp and her paternal grandparents Charles and Anna Arnet.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Friday, June 24, 2022, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary. A Celebration of her Life will be held with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Friday, June 24, 2022, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler.

Roland Oral Foster-Balloun, age 70, of Russell, Kansas, died May 22, 2022, in Salmon Arm, British Columbia, Canada.

He was not an astronaut, but some called him&nbsp;Astronaut.&nbsp;He grew up working and managing his mother’s restaurants and always excelled in sports—a natural athlete his whole life. At 17 he joined the Navy, served 4 years, and was honorably discharged.

He opened his own restaurants and succeeded. He opened a retail camera business and succeeded. He opened a travel agency and succeeded. He went back to college in his late 30s to earn a business degree. He graduated from Tulane Law School and spent a stint as an attorney in Washington State. He worked together with his brother, Mike Balloun, in a commercial construction business. He returned to sales—cars this time—and ended up being the general manager of several dealerships. Sales in technology, business development for weight-loss clinics—whatever he did, he succeeded and grew businesses. And there were a lot of smaller endeavors in between, unfortunately, none of them took him into space.

Roland’s personality was energetic and he never stopped pursuing a vision for the future. The things he loved the most in this world were his children, his grandchildren, football, and having a good time. Throughout it all, he wrestled with God, but kept coming back to faith in Jesus Christ.

He is preceded in death by his mother Patricia Louise (Black) Balloun, his father Cecil Raymond Foster, and loving grandparents—his favorite of whom was his maternal grandmother Katheryn (Schmitt) Black, who was like a mother to him.

He is survived by his children, Trisha Deann Smith, O.Shane Balloun, Chevas Balloun, Isaac Balloun, Aimee Larsgard, and Ali Balloun, his sister Cindy Flora, his brother Mike Balloun, his sister Pam Perez, 8 grandchildren (1 in utero), a few remaining NASA astronauts and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Roland Oral Foster-Balloun

James H. Strine, age 70 of Hays, Kansas, died Sunday, January 16, 2022, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

He was born June 1, 1951, in Horton, Kansas. to Earl and Wilda (Hawk) Strine. &nbsp;

He was a Kansas State District Forester for 35 years and retired in 2013. &nbsp;He was a 1969 graduate of Atchison High School. &nbsp;He received a Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Missouri, and a Master’s Degree at the Oklahoma State University both in &nbsp;Forest Management. &nbsp;He served in the Kansas National Guard, was active member of the&nbsp;World Wildlife Foundation, and the National Audubon Society.&nbsp;

James loved the outdoor and all wildlife,&nbsp;he&nbsp;will be remembered for his generosity and his sense of humor, but most of all a loving father,&nbsp;brother, and uncle.

Survivors include his son, Joshua Strine, Hays, KS. &nbsp;He was preceded in death by his parents; his two brothers, Wayne Strine and Clyde Strine.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held&nbsp;on Saturday,&nbsp;June 25,&nbsp;2022,&nbsp;from 11:00 A.M.&nbsp;to 3:00 P.M .at the Jo Ann Jennings and John T.&nbsp;Bird&nbsp;residence, 1395 Rome&nbsp;Road,Hays, Kansas.&nbsp;Josh Strine welcomes his dad's many friends to enjoy lunch from 11:00 to 1:00 with remarks honoring Jim to follow at 1:00.&nbsp;This is a casual open event so please come and go as your schedule allows.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Verlin D. Stegman, 60, passed away Thursday, June 16, 2022. He was born in Great Bend to Virgil and Esther (Dechant) Stegman.

Verlin worked for many years as a building operator for the USD 305 
school system. Outside of work he loved spending time in the outdoors, 
camping, fishing, and telling stories around the campfire.

He was preceded by his parents and brother, Steven Stegman.

Verlin is survived by his siblings, Zandra Rotrock (Chester), Wanda 
Budke (John), Brenda Nitsch (Danny); and many loving nieces and nephews,
 family and friends.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, 2022, with a Rosary 
beginning at 6:30 p.m. all at Ryan Mortuary. Funeral services will be at
 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 22nd, at Ryan Mortuary. Burial will follow in
 Mt Calvary Cemetery.

Verlin D. Stegman

Jeannine Catherine Call was born to Augustine and Catherine 
Depperschmidt on July 25, 1931 ,in Park, Kansas. Jeannine was the oldest 
of 4 children.&nbsp; Jeannie was a teacher in her early life In Wichita, Ks. 
where she met William D. Call, whom she would marry in early 1954.&nbsp; They
 had 10 children together before divorcing in 1976.&nbsp; After the divorce, 
she returned to school at Fort Hays State, earning a Master’s degree in 
special education.&nbsp; Shortly after returning to teaching, she changed 
direction and began a new career, eventually becoming a Mechanical 
Engineer in Pharmaceutical companies, first in Hays, Ks. then Phoenix, 
Az., retiring from that line of work and returning to Hays in 1999.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s church in Hays, was a library volunteer, and belonged to a quilting club.&nbsp;

She faced the harsh realities of life head on and did whatever it 
took to take care of her children and her future so she would never be 
dependent on anyone!&nbsp; Jeannine had great integrity, great faith and was 
intent on controlling her own destiny.&nbsp; She carried throughout her life a
 deep love of teaching, reading, researching, learning new and 
enlightening information, and gardening. Her yard was always full of all
 manner of flowers, fruit trees and vegetable gardens. Not one to care 
to travel much, she had hundreds of books to take her wherever struck 
her fancy without ever leaving the house. She was deeply compassionate, 
loving, and full of humor, very direct and a superbly wonderful human 
being.&nbsp; She had a deep passion and zest for life.&nbsp; She did not know a 
stranger and loved all she encountered.&nbsp; She deeply loved and raised her
 10 children amidst many challenges and loved not only her own children,
 many grandchildren and great grandchildren, but included in her family 
many, many others that she enfolded in her love and heart as well, and 
they happily called her mom as well.

In 90 years of life Mom crossed many paths and picked up various nick
 names including J.C., but in the last few years most have known her as 
Granny, although there have been a few instances referencing the cartoon
 character “Maxine” as well.&nbsp; If you knew her, you would easily see the 
resemblance in looks and occasional attitude and commentary…

Jeannine was most content when she was with her large and extended 
family, when she was delving into her collections of books and pictures 
of family and friends, in researching the genealogy of her family’s 
ancestry and sharing it with others and in puttering around her yard and
 garden.

Jeannine is preceded in death by her mom and dad, “Katie” and “Gus” 
Depperschmidt, her sister Wanda Depperschmidt and her brother, Danny 
Depperschmidt.&nbsp; She is survived by her brother Tom Depperschmidt, 
Oakley, KS and by her children: David (Dona) Call of Yates Center, KS, 
Mike (Alaina) Call of Sedgwick KS, Dan (Ellie) Call of Chanute, KS, Rick
 (Ellen) Call of Hays, KS, Mary (Wayne) Magley of Monument, KS, Larry 
(Diann) Call of Haysville KS, Joe (Paula) Call of Wichita, KS,&nbsp; Suzy 
(Al) Jacobsen of Lawrence, KS, Jim Call of Hays, KS, Angie (Ed) Needham 
of Mulvane KS, 31 grandchildren and their spouses, 44 great 
grandchildren and their spouses, and 3 great-great grandchildren.

Jeannie was deeply loved and highly esteemed.&nbsp; She will be greatly 
missed. Her love, her laughter, her hugs, her joy, her passion and zest 
for life are the living legacies that ripple out into the future 
generations of this family.

At Jeannine Call’s request, no services will be held.&nbsp; She will be 
buried next to her Mother and Father in St. Joseph’s cemetery in Oakley,
 Ks.

James Dwayne Radnor, age 64, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, 
June 15, 2022, at his home In Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on July 
25, 1957, the son of James Raymond and Alberta Bell Matheny Radnor.&nbsp; A 
lifetime resident of Scott City, Kansas, he was a farmer and a 
commercial truck driver.

He was a member of the St. Francis Episcopal Church in Russell 
Springs, Kansas, and a lifetime member of the Butterfield Trail 
Association.

Survivors include his One Brother - Joseph Raymond &amp; Theresa 
Radnor of Scott City, Kansas, One Sister - Peggy Jean &amp; Robert Smith
 of Garden City, Kansas, and Seven Nephews - James B. Radnor Of Scott 
City, Kansas, Michael Radnor of San Antonio, Texas, William Radnor of 
San Marcos, Texas, Travis Radnor of Omaha, Nebraska, Robert Smith of 
Mayetta, Kansas, Nicholas Smith of Garden City, Kansas, Nathan Smith of 
Denver Colorado, Two Nieces- Mary Rudman of Victoria, Kansas, and

James Dwayne Radnor

Kenneth Dean “Kenny” Schwindt – LEOTI, KS – The man. The myth. The legend.&nbsp;

Ken
 died on May 11, 2022, at the age of 81 ½ years. Born October 22, 1940, 
in Scott City, KS to Clifford Leslie Schwindt and Lillie May Smith, he 
loved flying, telling jokes (and he remembered EVERY joke he ever 
heard!), hosting Rocky Mountain oyster fries, raising hogs, figuring out
 puzzles and brain stumpers and Dr. Pepper. Not necessarily in that 
order.&nbsp; He hated hypocrites, snakes, and a job poorly done. Not 
necessarily in that order.&nbsp; 

Ken
 was great at, well, just about everything. He was a master craftsman 
who single-handedly built a tilt trailer in high school shop class long 
before this type of trailer was even on anyone’s radar. A skilled and 
self-taught mechanic, he could make any motor purr once again, 
regardless of why it now didn’t run and not charge an arm and a leg or 
the first-born child. But make no mistake, Ken loved kids. Teaching was 
truly his gift and he made a game out of learning. He probably taught 
hundreds of little ones how to tie their shoelaces over the years.&nbsp; 
Actually, you learned from Ken whether you wanted to or not. A seasoned 
carpenter, Ken turned the shattered remnants of a tornado-hit singlewide
 into he and wife Sue’s first family home. &nbsp;He was great at farming, 
growing a garden, making everyone feel welcome, and figuring out an 
easier way to get a job done. He made things work FOR him including 
things like weather and gravity. He figured out how to harness leverage –
 accomplishing an amazing amount of work by himself. When it came to 
grilling Rocky Mountain oysters, he cornered the market in western 
Kansas. He loved hosting this event (much to his wife’s chagrin who was 
often left with the kitchen to clean up). 

Ken
 loved to tell stories (most of them true) but was especially good at 
telling jokes and he was good at it…really, REALLY good at it…a perfect 
delivery every…single….time! 

What
 Ken loved most was flying (second of course to his wife and family).&nbsp; 
During his flight exam, the Captain, so impressed with Ken’s knowledge 
and judgment, offered him a pilot’s job with Continental Airlines simply
 because Ken refused the final taxi until the Captain had closed and 
locked his window.&nbsp; According to the Captain, most guys failed right 
there! But Ken declined, choosing instead to remain on the family farm 
in northeastern Wichita County where he’d invested so much of himself 
over the years. This love of flying was never far from his heart 
however. Not long after, he signed on as a private pilot chauffeuring 
his favorite Uncle Hallie about as he built the High Plains Feedlot 
north of Leoti. But that wasn’t the end of his flying years. Ken knew no
 fear and was ecstatic when asked to join in the Weather Mod cloud 
seeding project.&nbsp; Each time the storm clouds appears, he’d wait 
anxiously for that phone call asking him to load up and fly on the 
leading edge of the thunderstorm to encourage rain and dissipate hail. 
When asked if it was dangerous, he would smile and say, “No, the guys on
 the ground have our back” but then offered no explanation of the hail 
dents on the plane??!! Hmmm, perhaps a little too close to the action?? 
He’d never tell.

Ken’s
 energy knew no bounds, even at an early age. He attended elementary 
school at&nbsp;Pleasant Valley (where the old schoolhouse still stands), 
Lydia and R.B. Stewart. His day started at 4:30 am milking&nbsp;30 plus&nbsp;dairy
 cows, then he’d drive his sister and brother to country school, and 
finally head to town to start his own day at school. Ken was so 
dedicated to the success of the family farm that he literally “raised 
and sold the bacon” to help generate extra income to sustain the family 
farm. But what was learned on the farm didn’t always stay on the farm. 
Ken had an incredible memory and would often take all he’d learned and 
parlay into various small businesses and side gigs. 

Jack of All Trades….Master of Darned Near Every Single One of Them too!

The
 list of all Ken did is impressive: he farmed, ranched, drove truck and 
custom harvested, and ran a trenching and excavating business laying 
miles and miles of water line in the remote Kansas wilderness. He 
mastered butchering and sausage-making long before it was the new 
homesteading-prepper trend. Self-taught master plumber, electrician, 
carpenter and mechanic, he’d even diagnose problems over the phone!&nbsp; He 
made the best popcorn and potato donuts this side of outer space. 
Seriously, what couldn’t he do? Well, he couldn’t stay single and in 
1964 Linda Sue Burkart nabbed him or maybe….just maybe…he talked her 
into marriage? After all, Ken could indeed “sell ice to an Eskimo.” 

But
 the favored story begins like this: Ken was a Sunday School teacher and
 a youth group sponsor at the Assembly of God church where the entire 
family was baptized together. Ken believed God was responsible for an 
encounter he had with a rattlesnake (one of literally hundreds he’s 
slain over his lifetime) while farming in the Lamar, CO area. The area 
was full of abandoned cisterns and rattlesnakes and at least 30 minutes 
from civilization. The rattlesnakes were so bad that it wasn’t even safe
 to walk from the pickup to the tractor. The safest entrance in and out 
of the tractor was crawling through an open window from the bed of the 
pickup, feet never touching the ground. Early one fall morning, Ken 
drove up to the tractor, decided to open the pickup door, and get out, 
thinking the cool, brisk morning had surely stalled the slithers. He 
took his first step and as he lifted his foot for the second, he heard a
 strange noise that sort of sounded like a rattle. He looked back and 
realized that his first step had been planted squarely on the head of a 
rattler and that the twist in his step had dislocated the snake’s jaw, 
preventing what would have been a deadly bite. Truly God had protected 
him exactly as his wife had prayed every morning: “He that dwelleth 
in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the
 Almighty.....Thou shall tread on the lion and the adder, the young lion
 and adder shall thou trample underfoot .” (Psalm 91: 1 &amp; 12) Whew! God’s Protection!!

Ever
 compassionate and kind (well, not to rattlesnakes), Ken never&nbsp;met a 
stranger. He truly loved visiting with everyone. Generous to a fault and
 always glad to help, no strings attached, he believed the best in 
people. He always went out of his way when he discovered someone 
in&nbsp;sincere need, and even if it took extra effort on&nbsp;his&nbsp;part, he made 
sure they felt like they were earning their way rather than being given a
 mere handout.

When
 Ken boarded the plane for his last and final flight, he left his wife, 
Linda Sue (Burkart) Schwindt of the home, eldest daughter Kendra (David 
Kennelly) Schwindt of Marienthal, KS, youngest daughter Lynda (Allen) 
Brockmeier of Hays, KS, grand-daughter Dr. Megan Swope of Beaverton, OR,
 sister Lois Tucker of Wellington, CO, sister Norma (Bob) Marsh of 
Phoenix, AZ, and numerous nieces and nephews who all know how to tie 
their shoes. &nbsp;

Join the family along with Rev. Paul NcNall and Rev. Tod &nbsp;Anthony on Saturday, June 25th, 2022, at 2:00 PM at the United Methodist Church in Leoti, KS to wish Ken safe travels.

loved flying, telling jokes (and he remembered EVERY joke he ever 
heard!), hosting Rocky Mountain oyster fries, raising hogs, figuring out
 puzzles and brain stumpers and Dr. Pepper. Not necessarily in that 
order.&nbsp; He hated hypocrites, snakes, and a job poorly done. Not 
necessarily in that order.&nbsp; Ken
 was great at, well, just about everything. He was a master craftsman 
who single-handedly built a tilt trailer in high school shop class long 
before this type of trailer was even on anyone’s radar. A skilled and 
self-taught mechanic, he could make any motor purr once again, 
regardless of why it now didn’t run and not charge an arm and a leg or 
the first-born child. But make no mistake, Ken loved kids. Teaching was 
truly his gift and he made a game out of learning. He probably taught 
hundreds of little ones how to tie their shoelaces over the years.&nbsp; 
Actually, you learned from Ken whether you wanted to or not. A seasoned 
carpenter, Ken turned the shattered remnants of a tornado-hit singlewide
 into he and wife Sue’s first family home. &nbsp;He was great at farming, 
growing a garden, making everyone feel welcome, and figuring out an 
easier way to get a job done. He made things work FOR him including 
things like weather and gravity. He figured out how to harness leverage –
 accomplishing an amazing amount of work by himself. When it came to 
grilling Rocky Mountain oysters, he cornered the market in western 
Kansas. He loved hosting this event (much to his wife’s chagrin who was 
often left with the kitchen to clean up). Ken
 loved to tell stories (most of them true) but was especially good at 
telling jokes and he was good at it…really, REALLY good at it…a perfect 
delivery every…single….time! What
 Ken loved most was flying (second of course to his wife and family).&nbsp; 
During his flight exam, the Captain, so impressed with Ken’s knowledge 
and judgment, offered him a pilot’s job with Continental Airlines simply
 because Ken refused the final taxi until the Captain had closed and 
locked his window.&nbsp; According to the Captain, most guys failed right 
there! But Ken declined, choosing instead to remain on the family farm 
in northeastern Wichita County where he’d invested so much of himself 
over the years. This love of flying was never far from his heart 
however. Not long after, he signed on as a private pilot chauffeuring 
his favorite Uncle Hallie about as he built the High Plains Feedlot 
north of Leoti. But that wasn’t the end of his flying years. Ken knew no
 fear and was ecstatic when asked to join in the Weather Mod cloud 
seeding project.&nbsp; Each time the storm clouds appears, he’d wait 
anxiously for that phone call asking him to load up and fly on the 
leading edge of the thunderstorm to encourage rain and dissipate hail. 
When asked if it was dangerous, he would smile and say, “No, the guys on
 the ground have our back” but then offered no explanation of the hail 
dents on the plane??!! Hmmm, perhaps a little too close to the action?? 
He’d never tell.Ken’s
 energy knew no bounds, even at an early age. He attended elementary 
school at&nbsp;Pleasant Valley (where the old schoolhouse still stands), 
Lydia and R.B. Stewart. His day started at 4:30 am milking&nbsp;30 plus&nbsp;dairy
 cows, then he’d drive his sister and brother to country school, and 
finally head to town to start his own day at school. Ken was so 
dedicated to the success of the family farm that he literally “raised 
and sold the bacon” to help generate extra income to sustain the family 
farm. But what was learned on the farm didn’t always stay on the farm. 
Ken had an incredible memory and would often take all he’d learned and 
parlay into various small businesses and side gigs. Jack of All Trades….Master of Darned Near Every Single One of Them too!The
 list of all Ken did is impressive: he farmed, ranched, drove truck and 
custom harvested, and ran a trenching and excavating business laying 
miles and miles of water line in the remote Kansas wilderness. He 
mastered butchering and sausage-making long before it was the new 
homesteading-prepper trend. Self-taught master plumber, electrician, 
carpenter and mechanic, he’d even diagnose problems over the phone!&nbsp; He 
made the best popcorn and potato donuts this side of outer space. 
Seriously, what couldn’t he do? Well, he couldn’t stay single and in 
1964 Linda Sue Burkart nabbed him or maybe….just maybe…he talked her 
into marriage? After all, Ken could indeed “sell ice to an Eskimo.” But
 the favored story begins like this: Ken was a Sunday School teacher and
 a youth group sponsor at the Assembly of God church where the entire 
family was baptized together. Ken believed God was responsible for an 
encounter he had with a rattlesnake (one of literally hundreds he’s 
slain over his lifetime) while farming in the Lamar, CO area. The area 
was full of abandoned cisterns and rattlesnakes and at least 30 minutes 
from civilization. The rattlesnakes were so bad that it wasn’t even safe
 to walk from the pickup to the tractor. The safest entrance in and out 
of the tractor was crawling through an open window from the bed of the 
pickup, feet never touching the ground. Early one fall morning, Ken 
drove up to the tractor, decided to open the pickup door, and get out, 
thinking the cool, brisk morning had surely stalled the slithers. He 
took his first step and as he lifted his foot for the second, he heard a
 strange noise that sort of sounded like a rattle. He looked back and 
realized that his first step had been planted squarely on the head of a 
rattler and that the twist in his step had dislocated the snake’s jaw, 
preventing what would have been a deadly bite. Truly God had protected 
him exactly as his wife had prayed every morning: “He that dwelleth 
in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the
 Almighty.....Thou shall tread on the lion and the adder, the young lion
 and adder shall thou trample underfoot .” (Psalm 91: 1 &amp; 12) Whew! God’s Protection!!Ever
 compassionate and kind (well, not to rattlesnakes), Ken never&nbsp;met a 
stranger. He truly loved visiting with everyone. Generous to a fault and
 always glad to help, no strings attached, he believed the best in 
people. He always went out of his way when he discovered someone 
in&nbsp;sincere need, and even if it took extra effort on&nbsp;his&nbsp;part, he made 
sure they felt like they were earning their way rather than being given a
 mere handout.Yes, the stories are true.When
 Ken boarded the plane for his last and final flight, he left his wife, 
Linda Sue (Burkart) Schwindt of the home, eldest daughter Kendra (David 
Kennelly) Schwindt of Marienthal, KS, youngest daughter Lynda (Allen) 
Brockmeier of Hays, KS, grand-daughter Dr. Megan Swope of Beaverton, OR,
 sister Lois Tucker of Wellington, CO, sister Norma (Bob) Marsh of 
Phoenix, AZ, and numerous nieces and nephews who all know how to tie 
their shoes. &nbsp;Join the family along with Rev. Paul NcNall and Rev. Tod &nbsp;Anthony on Saturday, June 25th, 2022, at 2:00 PM at the United Methodist Church in Leoti, KS to wish Ken safe travels. Ever

Kenneth Dean 'Kenny' Schwindt

Elinor Jean Scott, age 96, of Hays, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2022.

She was born on the family farm May 10,
 1926, to Albert and Nellie (Rychel) Yost.&nbsp; Growing up near Downs with 
her two brothers, she endured the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression, 
learning early on about hard work and thrift and perseverance. &nbsp;She 
maintained these qualities for the rest of her life. &nbsp;

She attended Downs High School, 
graduating in 1945. &nbsp;On August 3, 1946, she was united in marriage with 
Ralph W. Scott at Williams Air Base in Chandler, Arizona.&nbsp; Upon Ralph’s 
release from the Army Air Corps, both Elinor and Ralph attended the 
University of Kansas, where Elinor earned her Bachelor’s degree in 
Education, and Ralph earned his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. 
Following their graduations, they raised their four children in Smith 
Center and Hays, Kansas.

Elinor delayed her teaching career 
until all four children reached grade school. &nbsp;She then taught fourth 
grade at Wilson Elementary school for 25 years, retiring in the early '90s. In retirement, she remained active with her responsibilities at 
the First Presbyterian Church of Hays and enjoyed bridge club, KU 
basketball, travel, socializing with friends and attending family 
gatherings.

Elinor is survived by two daughters and
 two sons: Barbara Lambert (Dennis) of Hutchinson, Martin Scott of 
Florida, Diane Scott (Dan) of Hays, Dane Scott (Nora) of Colorado 
Springs, grandchildren: Lance Lambert (Sarah), Meghan Carafano (Luke), 
Troy Lambert (Lacy), Alicia Pino (Marc), Matthew Tucker, Tyler Scott, 
Hope Hamlin, Grace Hamlin, and Mason Hamlin, and ten great 
grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her 
husband of 61 years Ralph Scott, her brothers: George Yost and Larry 
Yost, and her parents Albert and Nellie Yost.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on
 Wednesday, June 22, 2022, at the First Presbyterian Church, Hays, with 
Rev. Christine Wagner officiating.&nbsp; Burial will be at at 2:30 pm in the 
Downs Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 8:30 am until service time on 
Wednesday at the church.&nbsp;

Steven J. Thomas, age 53,&nbsp;of Hays, Kansas, died&nbsp;Friday, May 27, 2022, in Barstow, California. &nbsp;

He&nbsp;was born&nbsp;November 9, 1968, in Hays, Kansas, to John Harland and Patricia Ann &nbsp;(Leikam) Thomas.&nbsp;&nbsp;He married Carrie Christine (Silva) on February 14, 2009 at Las Vegas, Nevada.&nbsp;

He was a truck driver for over 30 years working for L-K Wireline and Acid in Hays, UPS Freight of Salina, and recently a driver for The Fleener Brothers Trucking&nbsp;of Carthage, Missouri.&nbsp;&nbsp;He grew up in Hays and was a 1988 graduate of Hays High School. &nbsp;He&nbsp;had a love for fast cars, loud music, fishing with his grandchildren, target shooting with his children, and time with his family. &nbsp;He was a great friend, a loving husband,&nbsp;an amazing father, and a proud Papa, wonderful&nbsp;brother, and a funny uncle.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Carrie Silva-Thomas, Hays, KS; his children, Brandon Silva and fiancé Alessia Radeker,&nbsp;Hays, KS; Jordan Silva and wife, Tressidy, Hays, KS;&nbsp;Rhiannon Silva, Hays, KS; Nicholas Silva, Hays, KS; Elizabeth Silva-Thomas, Plainville. Jesse V. Gill, 80, passed away Sunday, June 12, 2022, at Smith County Memorial Hospital, Smith Center, KS. Jesse
 was born on August 12, 1941, in Thrall, TX, the son of Miguel "Mike" 
and Concepcion "Chone" (Vargas) Gill.&nbsp; On November 22, 1968, he married 
Stella Camargo in San Antonio, TX.&nbsp; To this union they were blessed with
 two girls, Velma and Lori.&nbsp; Jesse
 was a U.S. Army veteran serving from 1960 to 1968, when he was 
honorably discharged after serving two tours in Vietnam.&nbsp; He joined the 
Kansas National Guard after being discharged from the Army and served 
for several years. &nbsp;&nbsp;He was a member of the American Legion Post 9, VFW 
and GI Forum all of Garden City.&nbsp; After the military, Jesse became an 
equipment mechanic for the Kansas Department of Transportation and truly
 enjoyed his job retiring after 20 years of service.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Stella on December 23, 2021, and several brothers and sisters. Jesse
 is survived by two daughters, Velma J. Gill and Lori M. Gill; two 
granddaughters, Kylie and Kayla Gill and several brothers and sisters. Funeral
 Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 20, 2022, at All 
Faiths Funeral Chapel, 113 S. Madison St., Smith Center, KS, with Pastor

Kenneth J Giebler, 83, of Hays passed away on June 13, 2022, in Hays.

Ken was born in Catharine on Dec. 15, 1938, to Robert M. Giebler Marcella (Leiker) Giebler.

He was a graduate of Hays High School class of 1956. He enlisted into the U.S. Navy in May 1956 immediately after graduation and proudly served until honorably discharged in December 1959. On Sept. 10, 1960, he was united in marriage to Nancy R. (Chew) Giebler in St. Joseph Church in Hays. To that union, two sons, Mark and Steve, and a daughter, Christine, were born. After his navy service, he was employed by R.C. Williams Inc. in the truck and equipment maintenance department for 32 years until the company disbanded. Ken retired from Midwest Drug in December 2005 as a shipping and receiving clerk.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy, of the home, two sons, Mark F. Giebler and wife, De of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; Steve Giebler and fiancé Yancy of Cimarron; Kan., daughter, Christine McGuire of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two brothers, Wayne Giebler and wife Carol, Summerfield, Fla.; Dennis Giebler, Springfield, Mo., and five grandchildren.

He was preceded by his parents and brother Bob Giebler. Ken was a proud American conservative who had utmost respect for the men and women serving in the military, law enforcement, first responders and the servants in the medical field, taking care of the suffering. He loved God, family and country and was a faithful fan of the Kansas State Wildcats.

He enjoyed, “Old-time country and country gospel music.” He took a knee for God and always stood for the American flag, national anthem, and the Pledge of Allegiance. He believed every conception was God’s creation and should have a chance to live as God intended. Cremation was chosen. A private graveside service is planned for a later date at the Kansas State Veterans’ Cemetery in WaKeeney. In lieu of flowers, please donate to HaysMed Hospice in Ken’s memory.  </figure>Kenneth J Giebler, 83, of Hays passed away on June 13, 2022, in Hays.Ken was born in Catharine on Dec. 15, 1938, to Robert M. Giebler Marcella (Leiker) Giebler.He was a graduate of Hays High School class of 1956. He enlisted into the U.S. Navy in May 1956 immediately after graduation and proudly served until honorably discharged in December 1959. On Sept. 10, 1960, he was united in marriage to Nancy R. (Chew) Giebler in St. Joseph Church in Hays. To that union, two sons, Mark and Steve, and a daughter, Christine, were born. After his navy service, he was employed by R.C. Williams Inc. in the truck and equipment maintenance department for 32 years until the company disbanded. Ken retired from Midwest Drug in December 2005 as a shipping and receiving clerk.He is survived by his wife, Nancy, of the home, two sons, Mark F. Giebler and wife, De of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; Steve Giebler and fiancé Yancy of Cimarron; Kan., daughter, Christine McGuire of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two brothers, Wayne Giebler and wife Carol, Summerfield, Fla.; Dennis Giebler, Springfield, Mo., and five grandchildren. He was preceded by his parents and brother Bob Giebler. Ken was a proud American conservative who had utmost respect for the men and women serving in the military, law enforcement, first responders and the servants in the medical field, taking care of the suffering. He loved God, family and country and was a faithful fan of the Kansas State Wildcats.He enjoyed, “Old-time country and country gospel music.” He took a knee for God and always stood for the American flag, national anthem, and the Pledge of Allegiance. He believed every conception was God’s creation and should have a chance to live as God intended. Cremation was chosen. A private graveside service is planned for a later date at the Kansas State Veterans’ Cemetery in WaKeeney. In lieu of flowers, please donate to HaysMed Hospice in Ken’s memory. Sadie was born March 30, 1995, in Hays, Kansas, the daughter of Fred 
and Angie (Kaufman) Arnet. She grew up in Russell and graduated from 
Russell High School in the Class of 2013. She graduated from Fort Hays 
State University with a Bachelor Degree in Social Work. She then 
attended and graduated from the University of Kansas with a Master’s 
Degree in Social Work. While in school, she had an internship with St. 
Francis Ministries; after school she continued her employment with St. 
Francis Ministries as an Integration case worker and for the last year 
or so was an Adoption Specialist.

Sadie was known for her great sense of humor, her enjoyment of 
fishing, traveling, swimming and spending time at the lake, collecting 
music concert band t-shirts, being with her family and friends, and 
taking care of her families and “her kids” at work. She had no children 
of her own, but had hopes of adopting several some time in the future.

Surviving family include her parents, Fred and Angie Arnet of 
Russell, Kansas; three sisters, Rose Bender, Lee Arnet and Erica Arnet 
all of Russell, Kansas; three brothers, Nicholas Arnet, Elias Arnet and 
Benjamin Arnet all of Russell, Kansas; nephew Jaxon Arnet-Prewitt; and 
four nieces, Vanessa Arnet-Lazono, Alexandra Arnet-James, Madelynn 
Arnet-James and Isabella Arnet-James. Sadie was preceded in death by her
 maternal grandmother Norma Jean Rupp and her paternal grandparents 
Charles and Anna Arnet.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Friday, June 24, 
2022, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary. A Celebration of her Life will 
be held with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00

Dorothy Marie&nbsp;“Dottie”&nbsp;(Beaty) Brown,&nbsp;95, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Monday, June 6, 2022, at Main Street Manor in Russell, Kansas.

Dottie&nbsp;was born January 19, 1927, in Snyder, Texas. &nbsp;She was the daughter of Albert and&nbsp;Gladys M. (Gibbons) Beaty. &nbsp;Dorothy’s mother Gladys raised her two children during the depression on her own. &nbsp;It was hard times and they moved&nbsp;allot. &nbsp;Her favorite town growing up was&nbsp;Goldsmith,&nbsp;Texas. &nbsp;In the 1940s, she attended Snowden, Texas, dramatic school and studied&nbsp;acting and voice training. &nbsp;While in college, she worked as a carhop at the&nbsp;“Triple Ex”&nbsp;drive-in.

Dottie was united in marriage to Kenny Dole on June 22, 1947, in Russell. &nbsp;They were&nbsp;blessed with two children; Nancy&nbsp;and William.&nbsp;&nbsp;They were&nbsp;divorced&nbsp;after 20 years of marriage. &nbsp;Later, she was united in marriage to Marvin Brown on July 14, 1979, in Estes Park, Colorado.&nbsp; They lived in Sterling, Colorado until&nbsp;Marvin’s&nbsp;death on September 19, 2002.

Dottie&nbsp;was a member of the&nbsp;largest&nbsp;sorority&nbsp;of&nbsp;women, a Homemaker.&nbsp;In her words,&nbsp;“She tried to give her kids what she didn’t have, a home.”&nbsp;She attended Methodist Churches&nbsp;all of her life. &nbsp;She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and the Ladies&nbsp;V.F.W. Post #6240 Auxiliary. &nbsp;She enjoyed reading&nbsp;and staying up with the latest fashions, films&nbsp;and hair styles, collecting antiques and spending time with her family and friends.&nbsp;She created a fashion and film library for her grandson Dustin to use in his studies&nbsp;in college.

Dottie’s surviving family&nbsp;include her&nbsp;son, William Dole of Russell, Kansas;&nbsp;two grandchildren, Shane Poche’&nbsp;of Russell, Kansas and Dustin Poche’&nbsp;of Russell, Kansas; great grandchildren Hanna Chandler, Savannah Barlow and Taylor Barlow.

her home in Broomfield, Colorado. She was born on February 9, 1950, in 
Great Bend, Kansas, the daughter of Paul and Frances (Bendon) Starbuck. 
She married Ian Patrick on September 1, 2000, in Vancouver, British 
Columbia, Canada.&nbsp;

Pam graduated from Great Bend High School in 1968 and Kansas State 
University in 1972. She retired from The University of Colorado at 
Boulder as a Property Accountant. Pam was a lover of many things: her 
family and friends, animals, architecture, travel, and genealogy to name
 a few. She was an avid supporter of our military veterans having been 
influenced by the service of many family members, especially her father.

She was preceded in death by her parents, step-daughters Sterling 
Creager and Tracy Patrick, and brother-in-law Colin Patrick. Survivors 
include her husband, Ian Patrick, loving pet companion, Rigby, brother 
Mike (Rhonda) Starbuck of Oologah, Oklahoma, nephew Andy (Trish) 
Starbuck of Colby, Kansas, niece Audrey (Craig) Dye of Oologah, 
Oklahoma, nephew Michael Patrick of Reno, Nevada, and niece Kelley 
Odriozola of LaVerne, California; great-nephews and nieces Drew and Anna
 Starbuck, Colby, Kansas, and Elliott, Darcy and Quinnlyn Dye, Oologah,

of Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico, passed away at the home of his daughter

 son and their families at his side.&nbsp; 

Jesus was born on November 20, 
1934, at Aldama, Chihuahua, Mexico, to Leocadio and Soledad (Garcia) Lopez
 Becerra.&nbsp; He was united in marriage to Josefina Mendoza Medrano on 
February 28, 1970, at Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico.&nbsp; Jesus was of the 
Catholic faith.&nbsp; He farmed in Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico for most of 
his life, and also worked as a security guard in Mexico.&nbsp; Jesus loved to
 tell jokes, loved to get up early and get his work done, and was very 
dedicated to his family.&nbsp; He loved to barbecue and enjoy his cooler with
 cold drinks, and loved to sing, dance, and play his guitar.&nbsp; Above all,
 Jesus loved life.

Jesus is survived by his wife Josefina Lopez of Great Bend, Kansas; 
three sons:&nbsp; Eloy (&amp; Marisol) Lopez Mendoza of Deer Trail, Colorado,
 Abel (&amp; Erika) Lopez Mendoza of Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico, and 
Jesus (&amp; Armida) Lopez Mendoza of Baytown, Texas; five daughters:&nbsp;

Dustin enjoyed going hunting, fishing and playing disc golf and 
softball in his spare time. He was a huge dirt track racing fan and a 
super fan of the Mizzou Tigers. Dustin worked as a scale technician for 
Fairbanks Scale Company.

He is survived by his mother Dee Ann Rodriguez of Dodge City; father 
Bill Niles of Branson, Missouri; three sisters Leticia Rodriguez and 
Sierra Rodriguez both of Dodge City; Christina Rodriguez of Amarillo, 
Texas. He is also survived by the love of his life Allyson Staab of 
Dodge City; three sons Lindon Staab and JaVon Sullivan both of Dodge 
City: Kayden Plante of Hays, Kansas as well as his grandmother Imogene 
Haddock of Dodge City and several aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his son Rougie Niles; grandfather John Copeland and stepfather Raul Rodriguez.

Memorial service will be held at Swaim Funeral Chapel on Saturday, 
June 25, 2022, at 10:00 AM with Scott Tilley presiding.&nbsp; Inurnment will

Sierra Rodriguez both of Dodge City; Christina Rodriguez of Amarillo, 
Texas. He is also survived by the love of his life Allyson Staab of 
Dodge City; three sons Lindon Staab and JaVon Sullivan both of Dodge 
City: Kayden Plante of Hays, Kansas as well as his grandmother Imogene 
Haddock of Dodge City and several aunts and uncles.He was preceded in death by his son Rougie Niles; grandfather John Copeland and stepfather Raul Rodriguez.Memorial service will be held at Swaim Funeral Chapel on Saturday, 
June 25, 2022, at 10:00 AM with Scott Tilley presiding.&nbsp; Inurnment will 
follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City.&nbsp; There will be no 
visitation as cremation has taken place.&nbsp; Memorials are suggested to
