First, no one can believe that someone else would have to
write Jeri’s obituary: We’re shocked that she hadn’t written it herself before
she passed! Her irreverent wit, her facility with words–they were unmatched. As
such, this will be a pale version of what she could have given us herself.

Jeri Lou Buffington was born on March 14, 1956, and died on
March 9, 2024, just five days shy of her 68th birthday. She grew up with
parents Verle and Gloria Buffington and brother Tom on a farm outside of
Marquette, Kansas. 

Tom remembers her as an animal lover and a “great partner in
crime” who learned to drive using his go-cart and later kept pace with him on
his motorcycle while riding her own Honda 50 mini-bike. After school, while her
mom finished up her work at the beauty shop in town, Jeri Lou would hang out
with her Grandma Ada Buffington, becoming best buddies. A musician from a young
age, Jeri Lou played piano, and she and her mom would entertain local clubs
with their singing and playing. Later on, she spent her summers serving as a
“rangerette” at Kanopolis Lake.

She studied speech and journalism at Fort Hays State
University during the ‘70s era of halter tops and rock-n-roll. After a brief
stint in Denton, TX, she returned to Hays. In 1993 she earned her master’s
degree in English there–while raising children and working as the church
secretary for Trinity Lutheran Church. She charmed and wrangled teenagers as an
English teacher at Thomas More Prep-Marian High School in Hays, Kansas, and at
Quinter High School. In Kirksville, Missouri, she was the Education Coordinator
at A.T. Still's Museum of Osteopathic Medicine before her diagnosis with LAM, a
rare and terminal lung disease that forced an early retirement.

If you ever met Jeri, you remembered her–because no one else
could make you laugh as she could, and no one else could match her insightful
wit. She was a delightful mix of contradictions: staunch feminist and
Barbie fanatic, rural Kansan and unwavering Democrat–as likely to flip
you off as to cry with you at a moving church service. And because everyone who
met her remembered her, you knew you’d better allow extra time when going
anywhere with her. You had to allow time for multiple conversations and all that
laughter.&nbsp;

Even greater than her sense of humor was her love for her
family–a love that sustained her during those unjust years struggling with LAM.
Her husband, Ernst Hintz, was never far from her side–especially in the “Geezer
Suite,” which is what Jeri called their tiny den-turned-bedroom on the ground
floor of their house, when climbing stairs was no longer an option. Her four
children brought her such joy: Jessica Dawson Collier (Jonnas) (Lafayette, CO);
Matt Dawson (Kirksville, MO); Kira Hintz (Bentonville, AR); and Katya Hintz
(Iowa City, IA).&nbsp;

Finally, those fortunate enough to call her “friend” enjoyed
a level of kinship, support, and downright fun that has left them with
enduring memories. Whatever “dark night of the soul” anyone was facing, Jeri
was there with a well-placed barb targeting whatever wretch was causing her
friend pain. Or maybe she’d show up with a plate of banana muffins. Or likely
both.

Jeri was preceded in death by her parents. Those of us left
behind must each find our way in a world so very diminished by her absence. As
for Jeri, at least she didn’t live to see Trump’s second term. That
would have killed her.

A Celebration of Life for Jeri will be held on Sunday, March
9, 2025, from 1:00-5:00 at the J.O. Sundstrom Conference Center in Lindsborg,

Jeri Buffington Hintz

Lucille 'Donna' Englert, 92, Hays, went to be with her Lord
on Sunday, March 2, 2025, surrounded by her family at her home.

She was born April 17, 1932 in Stratton, Colorado, the
daughter of Henry “Hank” and Catherine (Jostes) Pelle.&nbsp; She was a graduate
of Stratton High School with the class of 1950, and on June 24, 1952, she was
united in marriage to Leonard A. Englert in Stratton.&nbsp; They celebrated 65
years of marriage before he preceded her in death on May 11, 2018.&nbsp; Donna
was a loving mother and homemaker, handing down many cooking and baking skills
to her children.&nbsp; She worked at Travenol, Hadley Hospital, and when
Leonard was injured, helped him in the oilfields as a pumper.&nbsp; She was a
member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and a volunteer at the Arc
Thrift Store.&nbsp; Donna taught herself to play the organ and enjoyed
traveling throughout the United States and abroad.&nbsp; Her greatest love was
crafting, and for many years she taught ceramics and spent endless hours
quilting, crocheting, knitting, cross stitching, and doing diamond dots art.

Survivors include her two sons, David Englert of Santa Fe,
New Mexico and Gary Englert and wife Anita of Topeka, four daughters, Cecelia
Gerstner and husband Joe of Eagleville, Tennessee, and Cindy Romme and husband

Lucille 'Donna' Englert

Lewis “Glenn” Hartnett, 72, of North Platte, Nebraska, formerly of Palco, Kansas, passed away on February 26, 2025, at Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdredge, Nebraska. Glenn was born on April 29, 1952, in Plainville, Kansas to Bluford II and Naomi (McClay) Hartnett. He married Jeanette Skolout on June 7, 1975, in Colby, Kansas and together they were blessed with three children, Ashley, Luke, and Holly. Jeanette passed away on January 12, 2017. He was blessed to have met his next life partner, Jo Bay and continued a beautiful journey with her and her family.

A 1970 graduate of Plainville High School, Glenn worked as a Track Inspector for the railroad. While he wasn’t particularly fond of pets, they seemed to always gravitate toward him. Glenn also participated in the Kansas Senior Golf Association’s Kansas Senior Series, enjoying the game well into his later years.

Glenn is survived by his loving life partner, Jo Bay of North Platte, NE; children, Luke (Carie) Hartnett of Kansas City, MO, Ashley Hartnett of Topeka, KS, and Holly (Jarod) Hartnett of Salina, KS; Jo’s children, Jason (Mary) Ottis, Amber (Kevin) McKay; and grandchildren, Harrison Haines, and Roenan, Darby, Raef, Franki and Pax Haselhortst, Madelyn &amp; Nora Ottis, and Avery McKay.

Lewis 'Glenn' Hartnett

Robert Eugene May of Hays, Kansas, passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at his home surrounded by family.

Known as Bob to everyone, he was born to Harry C. and Maude (Fink) May in Broughton (Clay County), Kansas on July 6, 1934. In high school he was “Bobby” to his classmates in Luray, Kansas. He was an accomplished high school athlete, playing tailback behind his fullback brother Charles. He graduated from Luray High School in 1952 and shortly thereafter married the love of his life Nina Faye Kirkendall on December 4, 1953. Nina preceded Bob in death on December 14, 1997.

Father to three sons, Tony, Terry “TR”, and Tim, he was a role model to each of his sons in many facets of life, from being a father and husband, to supporting his family in all avenues of life interests, and one to instill his love of sports and the outdoors in his family. Bob and Nina were always present in their sons’ church, cultural, and athletic events. After his retirement, he continued his avid support of everything in which his grandchildren were involved. He would travel to theater performances in Texas, countless sporting events around western Kansas, and be seen wearing a Kansas University Softball sweatshirt only in support of his granddaughter’s play. Called “grandpa” by his granddaughter’s high school softball teammates for being at every game, he was awarded Fan of the Year at the Hays High Athletic Banquet in 2002. He was supportive of his great-grandchildren’s events as well, often being a cheering fixture in the stands and along the sidelines. Bob was always a Fort Hays State fan first and then a Kansas State fan, letting the common FHSU fandom bring together a house sometimes competitively divided.

Bob’s employment included short stints at newspapers in Natoma and Manhattan Kansas, and then the remainder of his career was spent as a printer at Fort Hays State University. The University honored him at his retirement on June 13, 1998, after 38 years of service.

As an FHSU season ticket holder, he bought two tickets every year for football and basketball and would generously share the second ticket with his sons, grandchildren, and friends. He was a member of the Fort Hays Tiger Club and will be dearly missed by his close friends at the Daylight Donut Coffee Club and his golf partners at Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course.

Bob was a long-time member of and Deacon and Elder at First Presbyterian Church in Hays.

His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and camping. His hunting included deer, turkey, pheasant, quail, duck, and goose, and he loved to trout fish a Colorado stream or mountain lake. He spent several weeks each year camping in the mountains with his family. He truly enjoyed twice a fishing trip with his sons in Manitoba Canada, fishing for walleye, small mouth bass and northern pike. The remote access to the fishing was via a 40-minute flight and a lake-landing in a vintage World War II era float plane. He enjoyed occupying the co-pilot seat for the flight. Trophy fishing, snapping turtles, black bear were part of the Canada experience. It was an adventure shared with his sons he cherished. Bob loved camping his entire life. With his sons he enjoyed many a Boy Scout camping trips not shying away from a sleeping bag on the ground, under the stars, and cooking meals on an open fire. His love for camping evolved over the decades with yearly Colorado vacations that started first in tents and then later in RVs.

Bob became active in the local chapter of the American Cancer Society following the death of Nina. Bob contributed his time and effort to the founding committee of the annual Hays Relay For Life Golf Tournament held in June with unwavering dedication. In his activism, Bob was joined by his three sons as they all teamed together to play in the tournament. Tournaments that followed shortly thereafter saw his grandchildren come and join in the golf play. A ritual with spouses and great-grandchildren then began as they attended the post-round festivities. A backyard picnic barbecue he hosted for family and friends ended the tournament day, making the annual event truly a time spent in reunion with family and reason to celebrate the life of Nina.

Bob was the youngest of a family of nine siblings, and is preceded in death by his parents and all brothers and sisters: Baby Girl May, Elizabeth May, Carl Wait, Mildred “Millie” May (Sjolander), Walter Wait, Dorothy May (Languein), Harry C. May Jr. (“Harry D”), Jean May (Lamar, Piland), Leroy “Roy” May, Dean May, and Charles May.

He is survived by his sons Tony (Kris), Terry “TR” (Sue) and Tim (Debi); his grandchildren Tiffany May (Jeremy) of Brooklyn New York, Hamilton Tyler May (Tammy) of Richardson,Texas, Danielle May (Lisa) of Kansas City, Kansas, Trevor May (Kristie) of Hays Kansas, and Tara May of Hays Kansas; his great-grandchildren Toby May and Eli May (Trevor/Kristie), Lincoln May and Eleanor May (Tyler/Tammy), and Dez May (Trevor/Kristie).

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Christine Wagner officiating. Burial alongside his wife Nina will follow in Mt. Allen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 pm until 8:00 on Friday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and from 9:00 am until service time on Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Bob’s name to the HaysMed Hospice or to the First Presbyterian Church.  </figure>Robert Eugene May of Hays, Kansas, passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at his home surrounded by family.Known as Bob to everyone, he was born to Harry C. and Maude (Fink) May in Broughton (Clay County), Kansas on July 6, 1934. In high school he was “Bobby” to his classmates in Luray, Kansas. He was an accomplished high school athlete, playing tailback behind his fullback brother Charles. He graduated from Luray High School in 1952 and shortly thereafter married the love of his life Nina Faye Kirkendall on December 4, 1953. Nina preceded Bob in death on December 14, 1997.Father to three sons, Tony, Terry “TR”, and Tim, he was a role model to each of his sons in many facets of life, from being a father and husband, to supporting his family in all avenues of life interests, and one to instill his love of sports and the outdoors in his family. Bob and Nina were always present in their sons’ church, cultural, and athletic events. After his retirement, he continued his avid support of everything in which his grandchildren were involved. He would travel to theater performances in Texas, countless sporting events around western Kansas, and be seen wearing a Kansas University Softball sweatshirt only in support of his granddaughter’s play. Called “grandpa” by his granddaughter’s high school softball teammates for being at every game, he was awarded Fan of the Year at the Hays High Athletic Banquet in 2002. He was supportive of his great-grandchildren’s events as well, often being a cheering fixture in the stands and along the sidelines. Bob was always a Fort Hays State fan first and then a Kansas State fan, letting the common FHSU fandom bring together a house sometimes competitively divided.Bob’s employment included short stints at newspapers in Natoma and Manhattan Kansas, and then the remainder of his career was spent as a printer at Fort Hays State University. The University honored him at his retirement on June 13, 1998, after 38 years of service.As an FHSU season ticket holder, he bought two tickets every year for football and basketball and would generously share the second ticket with his sons, grandchildren, and friends. He was a member of the Fort Hays Tiger Club and will be dearly missed by his close friends at the Daylight Donut Coffee Club and his golf partners at Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course.Bob was a long-time member of and Deacon and Elder at First Presbyterian Church in Hays.His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and camping. His hunting included deer, turkey, pheasant, quail, duck, and goose, and he loved to trout fish a Colorado stream or mountain lake. He spent several weeks each year camping in the mountains with his family. He truly enjoyed twice a fishing trip with his sons in Manitoba Canada, fishing for walleye, small mouth bass and northern pike. The remote access to the fishing was via a 40-minute flight and a lake-landing in a vintage World War II era float plane. He enjoyed occupying the co-pilot seat for the flight. Trophy fishing, snapping turtles, black bear were part of the Canada experience. It was an adventure shared with his sons he cherished. Bob loved camping his entire life. With his sons he enjoyed many a Boy Scout camping trips not shying away from a sleeping bag on the ground, under the stars, and cooking meals on an open fire. His love for camping evolved over the decades with yearly Colorado vacations that started first in tents and then later in RVs.Bob became active in the local chapter of the American Cancer Society following the death of Nina. Bob contributed his time and effort to the founding committee of the annual Hays Relay For Life Golf Tournament held in June with unwavering dedication. In his activism, Bob was joined by his three sons as they all teamed together to play in the tournament. Tournaments that followed shortly thereafter saw his grandchildren come and join in the golf play. A ritual with spouses and great-grandchildren then began as they attended the post-round festivities. A backyard picnic barbecue he hosted for family and friends ended the tournament day, making the annual event truly a time spent in reunion with family and reason to celebrate the life of Nina.Bob was the youngest of a family of nine siblings, and is preceded in death by his parents and all brothers and sisters: Baby Girl May, Elizabeth May, Carl Wait, Mildred “Millie” May (Sjolander), Walter Wait, Dorothy May (Languein), Harry C. May Jr. (“Harry D”), Jean May (Lamar, Piland), Leroy “Roy” May, Dean May, and Charles May.He is survived by his sons Tony (Kris), Terry “TR” (Sue) and Tim (Debi); his grandchildren Tiffany May (Jeremy) of Brooklyn New York, Hamilton Tyler May (Tammy) of Richardson,Texas, Danielle May (Lisa) of Kansas City, Kansas, Trevor May (Kristie) of Hays Kansas, and Tara May of Hays Kansas; his great-grandchildren Toby May and Eli May (Trevor/Kristie), Lincoln May and Eleanor May (Tyler/Tammy), and Dez May (Trevor/Kristie).Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Robert Eugene May

Victor Leroy Dumler, 99, of Salina, Kansas and former Milberger, Kansas, resident, died on Friday, February 28, 2025, at the Brookdale Assisted Living Center in Salina, Kansas.

Victor was born on June 23, 1925, in Russell County, Kansas, the son of George and Emma (Wegele) Dumler. He grew up in the Milberger and Russell County, Kansas area and attended country schools. He served his country and joined the United States Army during World War II from 1944 to 1946 serving as a Tech sergeant in the Philippines and Japan. After returning home from the military, he was united in marriage to Viola Rosetta Niedens on December 08, 1946, in Milberger, Kansas. From this union Victor and Viola were blessed with 3 children Darrell, Donna and Wanda. They raised their children on the Dumler family farm where Victor enjoyed taking care of his fields and cattle. He was a lifetime member of the United Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Milberger. He was also a member of the men’s church club, ASCS and V.F.W. Post #6240. He enjoyed World War II history, fishing, tending to his fields and cattle, traveling with his wife Viola and enjoyed his work for the ASCS (FSA) office, mapping the county. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Surviving family include his daughters Donna Bitter and husband Jerry of Garden City, Kansas and Wanda Radke and husband Dennis of Salina, Kansas; five grandchildren, Tracy, Darren, Jason, Ryan and Gregg; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Viola on April 17, 2020, son Darrell Dumler; his brothers Paul, Ben, Solomon and Alvin Dumler and sisters Bertha Krug and Agnes Radke.

A service of Victor’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, March 06, 2025, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas. Burial will follow at the Milberger Cemetery in Milberger, Kansas. Military rites will be presented by the Ft. Riley Honor Guard. The family will greet guests on the day of the service at the mortuary. Memorials may be given to the D.A.V. (Disabled American Veterans) and sent in care of the mortuary. Edna Louise Schiltz, age 97, of Selden, Kansas, passed away very peacefully on February 25, 2025, at Legend Senior Living in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Edna was born on July 17, 1927 in Logan, Kansas, the daughter of Charles and Rose (Zink) Becker. Edna grew up in Logan and graduated from Logan High School. She went on to attend beauty school in Denver. Edna married Harold J. Schiltz on January 7, 1947 in Logan, Kansas at St. John Catholic Church. In their 56 years of marriage, they were blessed with seven children, Barbara, Evelyn, Elaine, DeeAnn, Jerry, Don and Rob. Edna was very dedicated to her family as a wife, mother, and grandmother. She was the picture of a professional “homemaker.” She was an excellent cook and enjoyed baking, which was demonstrated by the meals she made daily, and especially those she took to the field during harvest for Harold and his crew which usually included some of her delicious homemade pies. She was a lifelong parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Selden, Kansas. Edna had many hobbies over her lifetime, from gardening, crocheting, and sewing in younger years to reading, adult coloring talent, and game shows more recently. She was the most kind and gentle person and had a life filled with faith, love and friendships.

She is survived and very much loved by all seven of her children: Barbara Corder (Joe) of Colorado Springs, CO, Evelyn Dohm (Bill) of Hutchinson, KS, Elaine Koerperich (Nick) of Selden, KS, DeeAnn Koster (Dan) of Hays, KS, Jerry Schiltz (Paula) of Selden, KS, Don Schiltz (Teresa) of Liberal, KS, and Rob Schiltz (Carla) of St, Franics, KS. She is the grandmother of 19, great grandmother of 45 &amp; great great grandmother of 13 as well as her sister-in-law, Deloris Becker of Logan, KS.

Edna Louise Schiltz

Cova Irene (Middleton) Huntington Fink, age 101, died peacefully January 9, 2025. She was born May 15, 1923, to Ira and Elta (Flanders) Middleton in rural Graham County. Cova grew up on her parents’ farm surrounded by three brothers and three sisters. Cova was educated in Bogue schools, graduating from high school in 1941. Shortly after graduation, Cova and Verlan Huntington of Morland, Kansas were married. The family grew to four with the birth of Ronald and Saundra and they settled in Hill City in 1948. Verlan passed away in 1962.

Never being one to sit still, Cova was the Deputy Graham County Treasurer from 1953-1955. Cova then began working at the Farmers and Merchants Bank and was employed there until her retirement in 1985. She and her co-workers quickly became great working friends and were fantastic bowlers. Cova bowled for over 30 years, bowling with Judy Dean, Emma Hildebrand, Rusty Nighswonger and Teresa Kemp. This team participated in 30 State Tournaments and 10 National Tournaments.

On October 5, 1967, Cova and Leon “Rasty” Fink were married. They made their home in Hill City until moving to Leon’s farm southeast of Hill City. Together they enjoyed gardening, farming and raising cattle. If that didn’t keep them busy, they would be on the go; either bowling, dancing or playing pinochle! She also made beautifully pieced quilts that were keepsakes for her family.

In 1988 they moved back to Hill City. For nine years they were “Snowbirds” traveling with their fifth wheeler and spending winters in Yuma, Arizona. When they weren’t traveling, she especially enjoyed family gatherings for special occasions or just a quick visit. Cova truly loved spending time with family and friends. Sadly, Cova lost Rasty in 2010.

Cova was quick-witted, social, and a fount of information she had acquired. She was known to speak her mind. In her later years, Cova lost her eyesight. However, her hearing and her memory were as sharp as ever. If a grandchild or a great grandchild had a birthday, she always remembered the date. She lived 101 years full of family, hard work, and love.

Preceding Cova in death were her parents, Ida and Elta Middleton; brothers: Marvin Middleton, Ovid (Pauline) Middleton, Harry (Donna) Middleton; sisters, Melva Jean (Jim) Coates, Marjorie Cooper and Lucille (Lewis) Bright; her son Ronald Huntington and grandson Aaron Johnson.

Left to mourn her passing are her daughter Saundra Huntington, of Hill City; daughter-in-law Donna Huntington of Grove, Oklahoma; three stepdaughters: Leanore (Albert) Burton, of Hill City, Kathy Fink of Tampa, Florida, Vera Fisher, of Hill City; grandchildren: Cheryl Frazee (Jim), Michele Johnson, Jeff Huntington (Lisa), Jill Anderson (Scott), Justin Huntington; step-grandchildren: Corey Burton, Carey Burton (Danny), Collette Haslett (Jeff), Courtney Zohner (Justin), Caleb Burton (Nouma), Troy Schneider (Lisa), Tabitha Albertson (David), Tamara Schneider, Aimee Cox (Scott), Derrick Cox, and Zachary Quint. Cova was blessed with 31 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, March 8, 2025 at 10:00 A.M. at Stinemetz Funeral Home, 522 N. Pomeroy, Hill City, Kansas. Following a luncheon at the Immaculate Heart of Mary CCD building, the burial will take place at Morland City Cemetery, Morland, Kansas. Memorials may be sent to the Miniserial Alliance Food Pantry in care of Stinemetz Funeral Home.

Cova Irene Middleton Huntington Fink

Carl A. Legleiter, age 91, of McCracken, Kansas, passed away on March 1, 2025, at Locust Grove Village in La Crosse Kansas.

Carl was born February 18, 1934, in the family farm home near Liebenthal, Kansas, to Joe and Emma (Unrein) Legleiter. He married Velma M. Rogers on June 8, 1952, in the EUB Church in McCracken. The couple made their home over their 71 years together on their farm in Rush County, Kansas. Carl was a lifelong farmer, rancher and also pumped oil wells. He was a member of the Methodist Church of McCracken. He was a 69-year member of the Masonic Lodge and belonged to Walnut City Lodge #215 in Rush Center, Kansas. He was a member of the Scottish Rite and was a 54-year member of the ISIS Shrine in Salina, Kansas. He was a 61-year member of Eastern Star chapter #228.

Carl will always be remembered for his strong work ethic, his kindness and generosity, his sense of humor, and his laugh and smile. His children will remember how hard he worked to take care of them, how proud he was of every single accomplishment they achieved, and the adoration he held for his wife and family. Although skeptical at first, Carl embraced technology and learned how to send and receive text messages on his cell phone. He enjoyed reading emails and reading the Hays Post news on the Internet. He liked watching live cattle sales around the country and viewing some of his son’s, Roger's, auctions online. He also enjoyed watching YouTube videos regarding antique farm machinery. He and his wife, Velma, loved to travel; they also went on many bus trips and other excursions by car.

In his later years, Carl enjoyed tinkering with old lawn mowers and other equipment. He restored several of his children's childhood toys as well as an old pot belly stove. He spent innumerable hours with the restoration of

a 1949 Minneapolis Moline tractor and was filled with great pride and satisfaction with the end result. He enjoyed displaying the restoration and drove it in multiple local parades.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alois, Jerome, and Kenny; sisters, Helen Schmidtberger, Josephine Richmond Adams, infant Mildred Legleiter, and Mildred Skillett; a great-grandson, Jordan J. LaFond, and his wife of 71 years, Velma.

Survivors include a brother, Joe ''Junior'' (Linda) Legleiter, of Dodge City, Kansas; two sons, Mike (Sharolyn) Legleiter of Hays, Kansas, Roger (Brenda) Legleiter of McCracken; a daughter, Lynette (Haydn) Buhr, of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, Carla (Brandon) Owen, Brandi (Michael) LaFond, Lance (Rachel) Legleiter, Lee (Sarah) Legleiter, Lisa Legleiter, and Brian Legleiter; nine great-grandchildren; special friend, Florence Herrman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Wednesday, March 5, 2025, from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.

Legleiter, age 91, of McCracken, Kansas, passed away on March 1, 2025, at Locust Grove Village in La Crosse Kansas.Carl was born February 18, 1934, in the family farm home near Liebenthal, Kansas, to Joe and Emma (Unrein) Legleiter. He married Velma M. Rogers on June 8, 1952, in the EUB Church in McCracken. The couple made their home over their 71 years together on their farm in Rush County, Kansas. Carl was a lifelong farmer, rancher and also pumped oil wells. He was a member of the Methodist Church of McCracken. He was a 69-year member of the Masonic Lodge and belonged to Walnut City Lodge #215 in Rush Center, Kansas. He was a member of the Scottish Rite and was a 54-year member of the ISIS Shrine in Salina, Kansas. He was a 61-year member of Eastern Star chapter #228.Carl will always be remembered for his strong work ethic, his kindness and generosity, his sense of humor, and his laugh and smile. His children will remember how hard he worked to take care of them, how proud he was of every single accomplishment they achieved, and the adoration he held for his wife and family. Although skeptical at first, Carl embraced technology and learned how to send and receive text messages on his cell phone. He enjoyed reading emails and reading the Hays Post news on the Internet. He liked watching live cattle sales around the country and viewing some of his son’s, Roger's, auctions online. He also enjoyed watching YouTube videos regarding antique farm machinery. He and his wife, Velma, loved to travel; they also went on many bus trips and other excursions by car.In his later years, Carl enjoyed tinkering with old lawn mowers and other equipment. He restored several of his children's childhood toys as well as an old pot belly stove. He spent innumerable hours with the restoration ofa 1949 Minneapolis Moline tractor and was filled with great pride and satisfaction with the end result. He enjoyed displaying the restoration and drove it in multiple local parades.He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alois, Jerome, and Kenny; sisters, Helen Schmidtberger, Josephine Richmond Adams, infant Mildred Legleiter, and Mildred Skillett; a great-grandson, Jordan J. Michelle Renee Jarmer, 57, passed away on February 26, 2025, at Salina Regional Health Center, Salina, Kan. She was born October 5, 1967, in Yuma, Ariz.

Michelle, a current resident of Salina coming from Hays and Ellis, served faithfully as a county appraiser for Ness and Ellis counties. She enjoyed scrapbooking and dove wholeheartedly into anything that her kids or grandkids were doing, from storm chasing to motorcycle and four-wheeler riding. Not only was Michelle survived by children of her own, but she was also considered a second mom to so many more.

Survivors include her soul mate, Randy Ferguson of Salina; five sons, Cody Jarmer (Kymber Reinert) of Larned, Derrick Jarmer of Ness City, Austin Ferguson of Salina, Dalton Ferguson of Salina, and Cole Ferguson of Salina; two daughters, Caitlyn Ferguson of Lyons and Mary Ferguson of Salina; and two sisters, Jacqueline Lang (Randy) of Hays and Laura Geschwenter (Jeffrey) of Ellis; and 13 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Michael Leiker and infant Bryce Jarmer.

Martin Robert Becker, 69, of Milberger, Kansas, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2025, at his home with his loving family by his side.

Marty was born on January 29, 1956, in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; He was the son of LaVern H. and Elaine L. (Karst) Becker.&nbsp; He grew up in the Milberger area, attended Lincoln Rural Elementary School and graduated from Russell High School in the Class of 1974.&nbsp; He then attended Ft. Hays State University.

Marty met, fell in love, and was united in marriage to Susan R. Schmidt on November 25, 1978, at the United Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Milberger.&nbsp; This union was blessed with two children; Ryan and Megan.&nbsp; They made their home in rural Russell.

Marty was a devoted Farmer and Stockman.&nbsp; He hauled livestock for many years.&nbsp; He was an active member of the United Emmanuel Lutheran Church and served as Chairman of the UELC Church Council for many years.&nbsp; He served on the Russell County 4-H Fair Board, the Board of Directors of the Great Bend Coop from 2011 to 2019, and Russell County Farm Bureau.&nbsp; His love of farming was both a career and a hobby. He was an avid K-State football and KC Chiefs fan. His favorite holiday was 4th of July and he built a tradition of celebrating it with family and friends.&nbsp; He enjoyed playing cards &amp; games, and fishing with his family and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed being a part of his grandchildren’s lives and activities. Marty was a great Husband, Father, Papa and Friend.

Marty’s surviving family includes his wife of 46 years, Susan of the home; son, Ryan Martin Becker (Micah) of Russell, Kansas; daughter, Megan Susanne Becker of Omaha, Nebraska; four grandchildren, Riley Marie Becker, Reagan Grace Becker, Elijah Martin Becker and Silas Emmanuel Becker; mother-in- law, Alice Schmidt of Russell, Kansas; brothers-in-law, Phillip Schmidt (Vickie) of Seiling, Oklahoma and Gregory Schmidt of Prairie Village, Kansas; sisters-in-law, Shelley Dougherty of Eudora, Kansas and Margie Schmidt of Russell, Kansas.

Kenneth Joseph Riemann, 91, lifetime Edmond, KS resident, passed away Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at Memorial Hospital North, Colorado Springs, CO.

He was born December 9, 1933, on the family farm southeast of Edmond. He was the fourth of seven children born to Joseph and Margaret (Jurgensmeier) Riemann. He attended and graduated from Edmond Consolidated School with the class of 1951. He served as a mechanic in the Army’s 9th Engineer Battalion from 1956 to 1958.

In September 1952, Kenneth met the love of his life, Ruby Jones. They were married May 11, 1961, in Logan, KS. To this union one daughter, Debra Ann, was born.

From a very young age, Kenneth had a passion and love for farming. He worked on the family farm and hired out as a farmhand to family and neighbors until he took over the family farm in 1958. He expanded the farm over the years until his retirement in 2010. He was a member of the local American Legion and St. John’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed college basketball, NFL football, playing pitch, reading Louis L’Amour books, gardening, and his family. In later years, he could be found riding his Polaris Ranger checking how the crops were growing.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Margaret, wife Ruby of 60 years, an infant brother Eugene, brother Maurice, and sister Betty.

Survivors include daughter Debra and husband Stephen Maikell of Falcon, CO; three grandchildren: Captain Megan Maikell of Northern VA, Marissa Maikell of Falcon, CO, and Ryan Maikell of London, UK; brothers Ronald Riemann and wife Jean of Beloit, KS, Donald Riemann of Liberty Twp, OH, and sister Phyllis Wetter and husband Lawrence of Salina, KS; sister-in-law Eileen Riemann of Hill City, KS and family and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial, officiated by Father Trinity Savariyar, will be held on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at 10:30 a.m., at the St. John’s Catholic Church, in Logan, Kansas. Burial will follow at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Densmore, Kansas.

Kenneth Joseph Riemann

Pastor Luke William Wise, of Plainville, Kansas passed away on February 27, 2025, at the Rooks County Health Center in Plainville, at the age of 41. He was born on March 10, 1983, to Ronald “Ron” Duane and Mary Beth (Hargrave) Wise in Hays, Kansas. He was married on June 1, 2013, to Amanda Nicole Fronce in Plainville, Kansas at the United Methodist Church. God blessed them with three daughters, Hadassah, Lillyana and Ronniyah.

Luke was raised in Plainville for the entirety of his youth. While Luke enjoyed many things growing up, nothing would ever be able to surpass his love for the sport of wrestling. Though talented, the bulk of Luke’s success in wrestling could only be credited to his hard work, dedication, and a steadfast commitment to see his dream of winning a state title come to fruition. On February 23rd, 2002, that dream became a reality when Luke secured victory his senior year of high school, becoming a 3-2-1A state champion.

As life unfolded, Luke would soon find himself in a different kind of wrestling match. One that wasn’t fought under bright gymnasium lights but in the relentless grip of alcoholism. What began as harmless fun nights of laughter, parties, and celebration - slowly tightened its hold, pulling him away from the people and passions he once cherished most. As time passed, the fight grew harder, and the victories became fewer. Hope seemed lost, and the weight of the world seemed to have him pinned down for good. Then, at rock bottom, the same hands that had formed him from the beginning reached in and brought redemption to Luke’s life (Psalm 103:10-13). In that moment, he experienced the fullness of God’s salvation. His shame washed away, made clean by grace, and embraced by the unconditional love of a Father who had never given up on him. Luke was born again, a new man with a new mission: to share the love and truth of Christ with everyone he encountered. His story, once marked by struggle, became a testimony of grace, redemption, and the unfailing power of God’s love.

After encountering the transforming power of Christ, Luke devoted his life to ministry, becoming a steadfast leader in the church. He played a pivotal role in helping establish the Oasis Church plant in Salina, KS (2017-18), laying a foundation for others to encounter the same redemption he had experienced. In 2018, he stepped into the pastoral role at Ark City First Church of the Nazarene, faithfully shepherding the congregation until 2021. God then led him back to his hometown, where he accepted the call to pastor the Nazarene Church in Plainville, KS. There, from 2021 to 2025, Luke poured out his heart, preaching the gospel to the very people who had helped shape his faith, completing his life’s work in the place and among the people he cherished most.

Even as Luke faithfully served in ministry, he continued to make a lasting impact on the wrestling world, becoming the head coach of the Plainville High School girls wrestling team. To Luke, coaching was more than just building champions on the mat, it was about shaping hearts, instilling confidence, and teaching perseverance in the face of adversity. He

poured his love into the athletes, seeing them not just as competitors but as young women with incredible potential, both in wrestling and in life. His devotion did not go unnoticed, and he was honored with the prestigious Cody Lambotte 'Courage in Coaching' award—a testament to his character, resilience, and the profound influence he had on the sport and the lives of those he mentored. For Luke, coaching was another avenue of ministry, another way to uplift, encourage, and pour into the next generation with the same passion that fueled his preaching.

Luke was known for his unwavering faith, his kindness, and his deep commitment to serving others, but above all, he was a devoted husband to Amanda and a loving father to their three daughters. They were his greatest joy, the heartbeat of his life, and the inspiration behind his actions. His love for them was evident in every moment shared, every sacrifice made, and every lesson taught. Though he will be deeply missed, the impact of his love, faith, and devotion will continue to live on in his family and all who were blessed to know him.

Survivors include his wife, Amanda and daughters, Haddie, Lilly and Ronni, all of the home; mother, Mary (William) Workman of Natoma; brothers, Scott (Danelle) Wise, of Plainville, Josh Wise, of Plainville; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ron Wise; grandparents, Don and Maxine Wise and Al and Tiny Hargrave.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 5th, 2025, at 10:00 AM, at the Methodist Church in Plainville. Burial will follow at the Plainville Cemetery with dinner following at the Nazarene Church. Visitation will be on Tuesday, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Methodist Church.

In that moment, he experienced the fullness of God’s salvation. His shame washed away, made clean by grace, and embraced by the unconditional love of a Father who had never given up on him. Luke was born again, a new man with a new mission: to share the love and truth of Christ with everyone he encountered. His story, once marked by struggle, became a testimony of grace, redemption, and the unfailing power of God’s love.After encountering the transforming power of Christ, Luke devoted his life to ministry, becoming a steadfast leader in the church. He played a pivotal role in helping establish the Oasis Church plant in Salina, KS (2017-18), laying a foundation for others to encounter the same redemption he had experienced. In 2018, he stepped into the pastoral role at Ark City First Church of the Nazarene, faithfully shepherding the congregation until 2021. God then led him back to his hometown, where he accepted the call to pastor the Nazarene Church in Plainville, KS. There, from 2021 to 2025, Luke poured out his heart, preaching the gospel to the very people who had helped shape his faith, completing his life’s work in the place and among the people he cherished most.Even as Luke faithfully served in ministry, he continued to make a lasting impact on the wrestling world, becoming the head coach of the Plainville High School girls wrestling team. To Luke, coaching was more than just building champions on the mat, it was about shaping hearts, instilling confidence, and teaching perseverance in the face of adversity. Hepoured his love into the athletes, seeing them not just as competitors but as young women with incredible potential, both in wrestling and in life. His devotion did not go unnoticed, and he was honored with the prestigious Cody Lambotte 'Courage in Coaching' award—a testament to his character, resilience, and the profound influence he had on the sport and the lives of those he mentored. For Luke, coaching was another avenue of ministry, another way to uplift, encourage, and pour into the next generation with the same passion that fueled his preaching.Luke was known for his unwavering faith, his kindness, and his deep commitment to serving others, but above all, he was a devoted husband to Amanda and a loving father to their three daughters. They were his greatest joy, the heartbeat of his life, and the inspiration behind his actions. His love for them was evident in every moment shared, every sacrifice made, and every lesson taught. Sister Cecilia Ann Stremel (Sister Celie Ann), 81, died February 26, 2025, at the Dominican Sisters of Peace Motherhouse in Great Bend. She was born December 22, 1943, in Hays, Kansas, the daughter of Sim and Sophie (Herman) Stremel. She entered the Dominican Sisters community in 1959 and pronounced vows in 1962. This year marks her 63rd year of religious profession.

From 1965 to 1987, Sister Celie Ann was an elementary school teacher at St. Rose School in Great Bend, St. Mary School in Garden City, Sacred Heart School in Cunningham, and St. Boniface School in Sharon, Kansas. In 1988, she worked for the Heartland Center for Wholistic Health in Great Bend as a Foot Reflexologist and a Reiki Master as well as Office Manager, retiring in 2015.

She gave guitar lessons after school to some of her students and played guitar and sang for many weddings, anniversaries, and funerals. Her love of calligraphy led her to provide those services for Sacramental certificates as well as teaching the art to others. She was also a member of the Election Commission, Chapter Secretary, Cedar Park Place Board member, and served on the One With Earth Commission. For many years, she was editor of the Great Bend Dominican community newspaper, “Grains of Wheat”.

Sister Cecilia Ann Stremel was preceded in death by her parents Sim and Sophie Stremel; brother, Jim Stremel; sisters, Bernadette Dome and Edna Temaat; nephew, Gregory Temaat; and niece, Brenda Dome-Luff.

Jill Marie (Hatfield) Dillon, 55, Hays, died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2025.

She was born Oct. 23, 1969, in Hays, the daughter of Charles and Leona Hatfield. She was a graduate of Hays High School in the class of 1988.

On Sept. 15, 1990, she was united in marriage to Jerry A. Dillon in Hays, and they celebrated 34 years of marriage.

Jill worked as a hair stylist for over 35 years working at the JCPenny Salon, Sip N Spin Salon, Impressions, and Studio 8.

Jill cared for all of her clients dearly. Outside of work she enjoyed gardening, crafts, and cooking. Above all else she loved her family which made her an extraordinary wife and mother.

She was very active in her children’s lives and never missed a school event. She enjoyed all of her pets, especially Max. Jill was kind, giving, and always made people around her feel special.

Jill Marie (Hatfield) Dillon

The Very Reverend Jerry S. Jones, Hays, passed away
peacefully in his home on Friday evening, January 24, 2025 in the presence of
his beloved wife, Susan. He was in the 85th year of life and the 60th year of
the priesthood.

Born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, Jerry Steven Jones heard
the call of the priesthood early.&nbsp; He
attended Seabury Western Seminary immediately after graduating from Dana
College, and he would live his entire life in service to God and the Episcopal
Church.

Father Jerry served churches in five Dioceses under 14
Bishops in Nebraska, Kansas, Wyoming, and Texas. In the Diocese of Western
Kansas, he was Rector of St. Michael’s, Hays, St. Andrew’s, Hays and St.
Elizabeth’s, Russell, and then Dean of Christ Cathedral, Canon to the Ordinary
and Prebendary of the Cathedral.

Father Jerry did nothing by half measures. He was fiercely
committed to the Gospel, passionately in love with his wife, crazy about his
golden retrievers, salty on the golf course, and enthusiastically appreciated a
single malt scotch and a good cigar. Father Jerry Jones knew who he was and
whose he was. He returns to Jesus as an old and familiar friend.

Survivors include his wife Susan, his son Mark, his daughter
Sarah (Jones Pinkerton), her husband Michael, two grandchildren Adam and
Meghan, and his brother-in-law Jeff Brown. 

He was preceded in death by his parents Beecher and Margaret
Jones and his sister Barbara.

Preston E. Dunagan, age 81, passed away on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas.

He was born on September 25, 1943, in Scott City, Kansas, the son of Thomas Willard and Julia Arlene Shull Dunagan.

A lifetime resident of Scott City, Kansas, he was a feed truck driver and worked for Brookover Cattle Company, Fairleigh Feed Yard, Crist Feed Yard, and Baker Brothers Harvesting over the years.

He was a member of the Christian Faith and a US Army Veteran.&nbsp;&nbsp;Preston was a loyal Red Cross Blood Donator, donating over 15 gallons, and started helping with the Kansas State Nut Fry in 1963.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was an avid collector of many things, including golf balls he donated to the high school golf team, and beer tabs.

He collected enough tabs to donate over $26,000 in stays at Ronald McDonald House.Survivors include his One Brother - Thurman &amp; Delinda Dunagan of Scott City, Kansas, Two Nephews - Jason &amp; Linda Dunagan of Scott City, Kansas, Travis Dunagan of Scott City, Kansas, One Niece - Shannon &amp; Harold Berry of Scott City, Kansas, One Aunt - Eva Anderson of Arcola, Illinois, and Numerous Great Nieces and Nephews.

Preston E. Dunagan

Gary Dean Casey passed away peacefully in Scottsdale, Arizona on February 15, 2025, surrounded by love and comfort. He was born in Hutchinson, Kansas on December 28, 1936, to Henry (Hank) and Marie Casey. He graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1955 where he competed in football, basketball and track, and received regional All-State honors in football. He continued his athletic accomplishments at Hutchinson Community College with a scholarship in basketball and track. He was awarded a scholarship in 1957 to Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas in basketball and track and field (high jump and pole vault).

When he was a senior, the Fort Hays basketball team took 4th place in the 1959 NAIA National Basketball Tournament and earned him second team tournament honors as well as honorable mention in the Associated Press little All-American team. As a result, he was chosen to play in an exhibition game with the Cleveland Pipers against the Denver Truckers in Cleveland, Ohio. He was offered a contract to play professionally, but chose to return to Kansas and coach as he had planned. He coached one year at Hays High School, one year at Ellsworth High School and two years at Hutchinson High School before beginning what would become a 37-year sales career with Jostens Class Ring and school products company. This job returned him to Hays, Kansas where he remained until his retirement in 1999.

Words that friends and family use in describing him were: "hardworking, kind, generous and a loving man. He loved his wife and family more than anything on this earth. He was selfless, loyal and caring, and delighted in spoiling his two granddaughters". Words that one of his many school administrators echoed on his retirement: "Your commitment to schools and students has been unequaled - for that matter - UNCHALLENGED! We'll miss you around here". Words from a Jostens executive on his retirement: “You are a ‘Rock of Gibraltar’ kind of guy for your clients and for Jostens. Wish we could run you through a Xerox machine and get 50 duplicates to plant in territories across the land!"

‘Casey’ and his wife Guyneth (Overeem) Casey were high school sweethearts having met as sophomores at Hutchinson High School. After graduating in 1955, they were married and celebrated 69 years of marriage in 2024, and hoped to make it to 70. Their daughter, Donna, was born in 1956 and their son, Roger, in 1961. After moving back to Hays in 1963, the Caseys joined Smoky Hill Country Club where golf became a major part of all of their lives. They also spent many weekends at their cabin at Cedar Bluff Reservoir relaxing, boating and fishing. On retirement in 1999, Casey and Guyneth moved to a golf course community in Tonto Verde, Arizona next to the Tonto National Forest and nestled up to the Verde River where he lived for over 25 years. His love for his wife, his family, his friends, golf and the Arizona Diamondbacks were his life.

He is survived by his brother Al (Denver, CO), his loving wife of 69 years Guyneth (Tonto Verde, AZ), daughter Donna (Mike Friedman, Boulder, CO), son Roger (Becky, Mission Viejo, CA), grandchildren Taylor (Daniel Umanzio, Indio, CA), Tara (Michael Olympius, San Dimas, CA) and two great-grandchildren, Cade 2, son of Taylor and Daniel and Elliott Rae 1, daughter of Tara and Michael.

 </figure>Gary Dean Casey passed away peacefully in Scottsdale, Arizona on February 15, 2025, surrounded by love and comfort. He was born in Hutchinson, Kansas on December 28, 1936, to Henry (Hank) and Marie Casey. He graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1955 where he competed in football, basketball and track, and received regional All-State honors in football. He continued his athletic accomplishments at Hutchinson Community College with a scholarship in basketball and track. He was awarded a scholarship in 1957 to Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas in basketball and track and field (high jump and pole vault).When he was a senior, the Fort Hays basketball team took 4th place in the 1959 NAIA National Basketball Tournament and earned him second team tournament honors as well as honorable mention in the Associated Press little All-American team. As a result, he was chosen to play in an exhibition game with the Cleveland Pipers against the Denver Truckers in Cleveland, Ohio. He was offered a contract to play professionally, but chose to return to Kansas and coach as he had planned. He coached one year at Hays High School, one year at Ellsworth High School and two years at Hutchinson High School before beginning what would become a 37-year sales career with Jostens Class Ring and school products company. This job returned him to Hays, Kansas where he remained until his retirement in 1999.Words that friends and family use in describing him were: "hardworking, kind, generous and a loving man. He loved his wife and family more than anything on this earth. He was selfless, loyal and caring, and delighted in spoiling his two granddaughters". Words that one of his many school administrators echoed on his retirement: "Your commitment to schools and students has been unequaled - for that matter - UNCHALLENGED! We'll miss you around here". Words from a Jostens executive on his retirement: “You are a ‘Rock of Gibraltar’ kind of guy for your clients and for Jostens. Wish we could run you through a Xerox machine and get 50 duplicates to plant in territories across the land!"‘Casey’ and his wife Guyneth (Overeem) Casey were high school sweethearts having met as sophomores at Hutchinson High School. After graduating in 1955, they were married and celebrated 69 years of marriage in 2024, and hoped to make it to 70. Their daughter, Donna, was born in 1956 and their son, Roger, in 1961. After moving back to Hays in 1963, the Caseys joined Smoky Hill Country Club where golf became a major part of all of their lives. They also spent many weekends at their cabin at Cedar Bluff Reservoir relaxing, boating and fishing. On retirement in 1999, Casey and Guyneth moved to a golf course community in Tonto Verde, Arizona next to the Tonto National Forest and nestled up to the Verde River where he lived for over 25 years. His love for his wife, his family, his friends, golf and the Arizona Diamondbacks were his life.He is survived by his brother Al (Denver, CO), his loving wife of 69 years Guyneth (Tonto Verde, AZ), daughter Donna (Mike Friedman, Boulder, CO), son Roger (Becky, Mission Viejo, CA), grandchildren Taylor (Daniel Umanzio, Indio, CA), Tara (Michael Olympius, San Dimas, CA) and two great-grandchildren, Cade 2, son of Taylor and Daniel and Elliott Rae 1, daughter of Tara and Michael.A private celebration of his life is planned by the family at a future date. A scholarship fund is being set up in his name at Fort Hays State University. Gary Dean Casey

Carl LeRoy Stoppel, 63, of Russell, Kansas, died on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at The University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

LeRoy was born on August 12, 1961, in Russell, Kansas, the son of Carl Alvin and Pearl Mae (Bushell) Stoppel. He grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1980. He worked in the oilfield industry as a Roustabout working for the last several years with Scheck Oil Company in Russell. He enjoyed riding his side by side motorcycle, shooting guns and sitting next to a fire pit drinking beer with his close friends. LeRoy was never married but found love the last year of his life with Sarah Waechter who helped care and love LeRoy while he battled his cancer diagnosis. One of his greatest treasurers in life was being part of the R Club. Having one final reunion with his “brothers” brought him so much pride and joy.

Surviving family includes his sister Patricia M. Demel of Kansas City, Missouri and significant other and girlfriend Sarah Waechter of Russell, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ernest A. “Sonny” Stoppel, niece Melissa Demel and brother in-law Ray Demel.

LeRoy selected a cremation service, and a celebration of LeRoy’s life will be held at 10 A.M on Friday, April 11, 2025, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas. 

Family will greet guest the day of the service from 9 A.M. to service time. Burial will follow at the Wilson City Cemetery in Wilson, Kansas. Memorials may be given to BFAC (Bras Fore A Cause) to help others in the community battle cancer or the R Club and can be sent to the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Carl LeRoy Stoppel

Peggy Delores (Douglas) Schoenberger, 78, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at her home in Russell.

Peggy was born July 6, 1946, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She was one of five children to William E. and Evelyne O. (Qualls) Douglas. She grew up in Ellis, Kansas, and graduated from Ellis High School in 1964. She then attended and graduated with a degree in Cosmetology from the Cosmetology School of Hays. She also attended classes at Ft. Hays State University for Pottery and Photography.

Peggy met the love of her life James “Jim” Schoenberger and were united in marriage on July 31, 1966, in Collyer, Kansas. This union was blessed with three children, Sharon, James Jr, and Jason. They made their home in Ellis for a couple of years before moving to Russell in 1969. Jim preceded her in death on January 4, 2020.

Peggy was a Cosmetologist in Russell for many years. She owned the Hair Shack and later she and her daughter, Sharon opened, Scissors Family Hair Design. She worked several years with Travenal, with her sister Barbara. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She was a member of the Russell Elks Lodge, Russell VFW Post #6240 Ladies Auxiliary and Delta Mu Sorority. Some of her favorite things to do in life were; doing arts and crafts like pottery, dishes, stain glass windows, drawings and doing art shows at the Deines Cultural Center; traveling with Jim to Homer, Alaska and Branson, Missouri. She loved going to the casinos, cooking for family and friends, taking pictures, getting her lottery tickets and cappuccino’s in Russell. She also enjoyed spending time with her family.

Peggy’s surviving family include her daughter, Sharon Weigel (Michael) of Russell, Kansas; sons, James Schoenberger, Jr of Russell, Kansas and Jason Schoenberger (Misty) of Russell, Kansas; brother, William Douglas, Jr. (Angelia) of Overland Park, Kansas; sister, Diane Douglas of England; 10 grandchildren; Jordan Burton of Russell, Kansas; Sheldon Bennett (Clayton) of Russell, Kansas; Breilynn Schoenberger of Fort Worth, Texas; Justine Evans (Cade) of Russell, Kansas; Chandler Schoenberger of Ankeney, Iowa; Graci Crow (Jordan) of Russell, Kansas; Ava Schoenberger of Manhattan, Kansas; Pierce Schoenberger of Russell, Kansas; Bo Schoenberger of Russell, Kansas; &amp; Kimber Schoenberger of Russell, Kansas; and 6 great-grandchildren; Irie Burton, Raegan Bennett, Boone Bennett, Stella Crow, Bowen Evans, Walker Burton and baby Evans on the way. Many nieces and nephews and friends.

Peggy was preceded in death by her parents; husband Jim; brother, Eddie Douglas; and sister, Barbara Rupp.

Celebration of Peggy’s Life will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, March 7, 2025, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary. Burial of ashes will follow at a later date. Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Thursday, March 6, 2025, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Peggy Delores (Douglas) Schoenberger

Agnes K. “Aggie” Gross, 79, Hays, died Thursday, February 27, 2025, at Via Christi Village in Hays.

She was born January 27, 1946, in Hays and was raised along with her five siblings by her loving and dedicated mother, Anna (Leiker) Bieker. Aggie graduated from Hays High School in 1964 and on June 12, 1965, she was united in marriage to Darrell G. Gross in Hays. He preceded her in death on May 8, 1991. She was a homemaker and worked for many years at HaysMed in central sterilization. A member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Aggie possessed a deep faith and by her family’s estimate, amassed a collection of nearly 80 rosaries and numerous angels. Despite her admission of cooking an inedible pot roast for her boys, she was an excellent baker with chocolate sheet cake being a family favorite. She also possessed a “green thumb” and had beautiful house plants and flowers in her front yard. She was an avid Chiefs, Royals, and Jayhawks fan and the only thing that could keep her from her son’s football games or her grandchildren’s events was the cold weather. Aggie enjoyed quilting and knitting, playing bunco, going to the Casino in Dodge City, and doing crosswords, word searches, and coloring books. Her grandchildren got to see “Nana’s” competitive side when they would play UNO and board games with Aggie. Most of all, she had a tremendous love for her husband Darrell.

Survivors include her three sons, Warren Gross and wife Diane of Amarillo, Texas, Jeff Gross and wife Diana and Mitch Gross and wife Shanna, all of McCook, Nebraska, two sisters, Rosemary Duncan of Denver, Colorado and Leila Knotts of Las Vegas, Nevada, brother-in-law, Cletus Gross and wife Quannah of Ellis, two sisters-in-law, Debbie Pfannenstiel and husband Randy of Hays and Joann Gross of Wichita, seven grandchildren, Emily Confer and husband Christian, Lexi Gross and fiancé Matt Haselhorst, Ryan Gross, Darrell “D.J.” Gross and wife Baily, Allison Gross, Patrick Gross, and Brynn Gross, and a soon to be in April great grandson, Brooks Gross. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother Anna, her husband Darrell, two brothers, Frank Bieker and infant Oliver Bieker, two sisters, Carol Bieker and Anne Hirch, and three brothers-in-law, Ron Duncan, Ed Knotts, and Delbert Gross.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, March 4, 2025 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Fr. Brian McCaffrey officiating. Inurnment will follow in St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery in Munjor. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 7:30 on Monday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Tuesday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. A parish vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 pm on Monday at the funeral home. Agnes K. 'Aggie' Gross

Philip Elijah Bruton, 98, of Bogue, Kansas passed away February 23, 2025, comfortably at his home. He was born September 9, 1926, in Guntown, Mississippi to Philip Elijah Bruton, SR. and Lelia (Tigrett) Bruton.

Philip grew up in the “Great Depression” and due to financial difficulties of the family he was sent to live with his mom’s oldest sister, Aunt “Lolly” and Uncle John Wright on a farm in Hornsby, Tennessee. Following high school graduation, he enlisted in the Navy. After his tour of duty, Philip attended college and worked as a steward with a commercial airline where he met Bonita Hocker who was a stewardess on the same airline. The two married and lived in Atlanta, Georgia where they had two children, Lige and Cass. Later the family moved to the Hocker Farm southeast of Hill City, Kansas, where he worked and where their third child, Ty was born. Philip later became the Postmaster at the Hill City Post Office until his retirement. He and Bonita were considered “Snowbirds” in their retirement years and would travel to Texas in the winter months to enjoy the warm temperatures and each other’s company.

Later vacations even included grandchildren.Philip is survived by his son, Ty (Lynn) Bruton of Norton; grandchildren: Gabe of Minatare, Nebraska, and Zach (Angie) Bruton of Bogue, Keali Casper of Norton; great grandchildren: Lila, Kati and Kimi Casper of Russell, Elijah, Liam and Sammy Bruton of Bogue, and numerous other nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Bonita; son Lige, daughter Cass, a sister Mary (Bruton) Hovis, sister Marguerite (Bruton) McAlister, sister Helen (Bruton) Porter and brother George Bruton.Philip asked to be cremated with no service, although a celebration of life will likely be planned at a later date.
