Dan Edward Koehler, 82, of Lawrence, and formerly of Natoma and Osborne County, died on Thursday, Sept. 22 at his home in Lawrence.

Dan was born on April 7, 1940, in rural Osborne County, the son of Harold and Ellen F. (Kirkpatrick) Koehler. He was raised in Osborne County and Natoma and graduated from Natoma High School in the class of 1958. He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Ellen Sue Pfortmiller on Feb. 25, 1961, in Natoma. From this union Dan and Sue were blessed with two children, a son Brad and a daughter Melissa. Dan worked for 45 years as a lineman and foreman for the Kansas Power and Light Company. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and always attended church wherever they lived. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with family and friends. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, and he especially enjoyed being with his grandchildren.

Surviving family include his wife Sue of the home; son Brad Koehler and daughter Melissa Koehler-Morton and husband Clark all of Lawrence; sisters Barbara Griffin and husband David and Delores Koehler all of Natoma; one granddaughter, Megan and two great-grandchildren, Jagger and Ruby. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson-in-law, Alex.

A graveside celebration of Dan’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at the Natoma Lutheran Cemetery in Natoma. Memorial contributions can be made to the Natoma Heritage Seekers Museum and sent in care of the mortuary. Lillian Mae (Keller) Koger passed away peacefully September 20, 2022,&nbsp; at the age of 84 at the Good Samaritan Society Nursing Facility in 
Oberlin, Kansas, after succumbing to the long term disease of Parkinson’s
 with her loving husband, Jim, by her side.

Lillian was 
born on May 23, 1938, in Stafford, Kansas, to Jess Edward Keller, Sr. and
 Anna Mae (Cundiff) Keller.  She grew up in St. John, Kansas.  She 
attended Sunshine and Centerview country schools and graduated from St. 
John High School in 1956.  She attended Pratt Junior College, Pratt, 
Kansas, and earned an Associates Degree in 1958.  Soon after graduation, 
she and her brother, Edward, moved to Englewood, Colorado where she was 
employed at Bingo King for several years.

Lillian met and married 
the love of her life, Jimmy Keith Koger, on March 14, 1963, in Englewood,
 Colorado. They were blessed with one son, Brian Eric Koger on January 
27, 1968. Lillian and Jim lived in Denver, Colorado until moving to 
Oberlin, Kansas in 2005.

Lillian’s passions were reading 
(enough books to create her own library), music, watching sports from 
football to tennis and everything in between, the Kansas plains, the 
Colorado mountains, the Arizona desert, everything Native American and 
the southwest, birds, wildlife, and flowers. She had a great sense of 
humor, quick witted, a thirst for knowledge and a sweet laugh. She and 
Jim four-wheeled all over Colorado with the Mixed Nuts Four-Wheelers 
Club satisfying her love for the outdoors and adventure. She was a 
devoted and loving wife of nearly 60 years, mother, grandmother, aunt 
and sister to her three younger siblings.

Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Edward Keller and a brother-in-law, Joe Romo.

She
 is survived by her husband, Jim, of the home and son, Brian Koger 
(Sharla Ritter) of Oberlin, Ks.; granddaughter, Larae Ashley Beebee, 
Denver, Colorado and grandson, Logan Jimmy Koger, Oberlin, Ks.; 
step-grandsons Seth Ritter, Ellis, Ks and Josh Ritter, Atwood, Ks; 
siblings Thomas (Sharon) Keller, Colorado Springs, Co., Patricia 
(Rodney) Crissman, St. John, Ks.; nephews Alan (Dawn) Keller, Colorado 
Springs, Co., Monty (Christine) Keller, Florissant, Co., Jess Keller, 
Colorado Springs, Co.; nieces Jennifer (Chris) Shankle, Kingman, Ks., 
and Amelia Romo, St. John, Ks., and five great nieces and nephews. 
Lillian is also survived by numerous other loving family and friends and
 her beloved dog, Chipper. She will be greatly missed by all.

A

Covenant Church, 810 W. Cedar, Oberlin, Ks., September 24, 2022, at 2:30

Lillian Mae (Keller) Koger 

Charlotte Banks Summers, 79, died peacefully with her husband and 
daughters by her side, September 19, 2022, at Hutchinson Regional 
Medical Center.&nbsp; She was born July 27, 1943, in Great Bend, to Walter 
Edward and Sylvia Ellen (Witte) Banks.&nbsp;

Charlotte graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1961. She attended
 Oklahoma College for Women before transferring to KU where she studied 
at both the Lawrence and Medical Center campuses, graduating in 1967 
with a degree in biological science and research. &nbsp;Charlotte began her 
career as a research biologist in the food laboratory at Far-Mar-Co. 


While her most treasured job was raising her two daughters, Elizabeth 
and Cady, she also enjoyed keeping active with several part-time 
positions including Puzzling Maps by Peirce Puzzle Company, the 
Cosmosphere, and Cranford College. Later, she became District Manager 
for Manpower Personnel Service, retiring after 20 years in 2015.

Even while working full-time, Charlotte always made time to serve her
 community. The women’s philanthropic educational organization, P.E.O., 
was near and dear to her heart. She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter BL 
and served as called upon in many roles.&nbsp; She also served on the Kansas 
State Chapter Board for six years, including State President from 
2000-2001. In 2002, Charlotte was selected for Leadership Hutchinson, an
 experience she enjoyed very much, that helped her continue to serve 
Hutchinson and Reno County. During retirement, Charlotte served on 
several boards, including the Hutchinson Town Club and as President of 
the Hutchinson Art Center during its remodel.&nbsp; After the Lair White 
House was opened in 2014, Charlotte managed the Kansas State Fair 
Museum. The theme for the exhibits was changed each year, requiring 
countless hours to research, locate artifacts, and assemble the 
displays. Charlotte was a faithful member of Grace Episcopal Church and 
served on the Altar Guild.

Even with all these activities, Charlotte still made time for 
friendships, hobbies, and being a loving wife and Nana.&nbsp; She was a 
dedicated friend and loved writing witty poems to celebrate her friends 
and family.&nbsp; Charlotte enjoyed traveling and keeping her mind active 
with bridge and book clubs. When she was younger, she enjoyed sailing 
and snow skiing with her husband.

On December 28, 1967, Charlotte married Robert Charles “Bob” Summers, in Hutchinson.&nbsp; They shared nearly 55 years of marriage.

Charlotte is survived by: her husband, Bob of Hutchinson; daughters, 
Elizabeth Summers Hunt (Paul) of Waterford, MI, Cady Summers Panetta 
(Michael) of Washington, D.C.; grandchildren, Sydney and Evan Hunt, 
Sylvia and Nicholas Panetta; sister, Mary Banks Hitchcock (Charles) of 
Mission Viejo, CA; brother, Thurston Banks (Linda) of Cookeville, TN; 
and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at 
Grace Episcopal Church, 2 Hyde Park Drive, Hutchinson, with the Reverend
 Dr. J. Ted Blakley officiating.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow in the church 
columbarium.&nbsp; Friends may sign her book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. &nbsp;at

Bryan Brand Harper Jr., age 77, of Lauderdale, Miss., died on August 25, 
2022. Robert Barham Family Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with

A native of Meridian, Miss., and born while World War II raged (1943), 
Bryan's early years were defined by life on military installations, 
including two years in a grimy Quonset hut on faraway Guam in the 
Pacific. His father, an Army Air Corp fighter pilot from Lubbock Texas, 
commanded this tiny island at war's end. A military "brat," Bryan lived 
on or near installations in Texas, Rhode Island, Alabama, Virginia and 
Naples, Italy, ( NATO.) Bryan's mom, Hazel Lillian Pigford of the 
esteemed Pigford family in Meridian, met Colonel Bryan Brand Harper, Sr.
 while he trained P-51 fighter pilots at Key Field.

A 1963 graduate of Meridian High School, Bryan combined achievement 
with ambition in undergraduate studies at Ole Miss, graduating BMOC in 
1967, then finishing Ole Miss Law School in 1970. After two despairing 
years in Jackson as a "storefront" lawyer, Bryan moved to that "promised
 land" called Colorado, and passed both the Colorado Bar, and the Real 
Estate Broker's exam. He made Aspen home - the first of the Notorious 
Harper Brothers to become Coloradans - and quickly succeeded in the 
exploding real estate market. In 1980 he married Shellie Roy, and they 
started Bryan Harper Realty as well as adding two new residents, Sabrina
 and Bryan Harper III, to Aspen's population. An avid skier and 
outdoorsman, Aspen became Bryan's Shangri- La, and Lake Powell his 
favorite sanctuary. Bass fishing was Bryan's passion.

In 1999, Bryan moved back to Meridian, built his dream-house at 
Dalewood, and with his long-time partner, Gloria Moore, they fished 
America's lakes and traveled the world. Bryan's art was his life, and he
 finished his masterpiece on his own terms.

Bryan is survived by his daughter: Sabrina Lundberg and her husband, 
Chris, and two grandchildren, Krister and Julie, of Hays, Kansas; his 
son: Bryan Harper III (Hunter) of Oxford, Mississippi; and a brother: 
Mike Harper (Hays) of Nashville, TN. He was preceded in death by his 
parents, Colonel Bryan and Hazel Harper and a younger brother, David.

Leon Brungardt, age 67, died peacefully, surrounded by family on May 20, 2022, in the home of his son in Wichita, KS, after a short but courageous battle with cancer.

Leon was born on December 1, 1954, in Hays, KS, to Paul and Mildred Brungardt, and raised in Victoria, KS. He graduated from Victoria High School (Class of 1972) and Ft. Hays State University. Leon retired from a career in construction and woodworking.

Leon enjoyed life to its fullest. He loved his family and friends and was happiest when being of service to others. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, reading, playing scrabble, and was often found just relaxing.

Survivors include two sons, Aaron (Mikala), and Jared (Nettie), both of Wichita, KS; four sisters Carol (Chris) Cowger, Topeka, KS; Lois Yunker, Munjor, KS; Wanda (Ron Staab) Brungardt, Victoria, KS; and Paula (Patrick) Zwenger, Victoria, KS; and five grandchildren, Landon, Brielle, Ruhiyyih, Samira, and Leon Brungardt.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Mildred, two brothers, Steve and Mark, and one brother-in-law, Tom Yunker.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, September 24, at 11 am, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Walker KS.

Janet Ruth (Werner) Malpert, 84, of Lindsborg passed away peacefully,
 Tuesday, September 13th, at Salina Regional Health Center. &nbsp;&nbsp;Janet was 
born on a farm southeast of Deshler, NE on April 2, 1938, to Albert and 
Esther (Kahle) Werner. She was baptized at Peace Lutheran Church in 
Deshler, NE, on April 17th, 1938, by the Rev. Fred Schwerin.

She attended District 86 and Peace Lutheran Parochial School. On June
 3, 1951, she was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Peace Lutheran 
Church by the Reverend R.H. Riensche. Janet attended Deshler High 
School, graduating in 1955 as valedictorian. She attended Wartburg 
College in Waverly, IA receiving her teaching certificate in 1957. She 
also attended the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.

Janet taught kindergarten, band, and choir at Ruskin (NE) Public 
School. While there, she was instrumental in getting the school’s first 
band uniforms.

On February 14, 1959, Janet married Darrell Malpert at Peace Lutheran
 Church by Pastor Erwin Janssen. To this union, three daughters were 
born, Dawn, Avona and Meredith. The couple made their first home in 
Hebron, Nebraska where Darrell was a pharmacist at Christensen Drug. 
They later moved to Clarinda, Iowa for eight years. In 1969, she and 
Darrell purchased Higdon Drug Store in Goodland, Kansas. Janet worked as
 part of Malpert Drug Company for the next 28 years until Darrell’s 
retirement in 1997 when the pharmacy closed and the business became 
Jan’s Hallmark. Throughout their years in Goodland, the family enjoyed 
many weekends at the lake, boating and picnicking with family and 
friends. After her retirement in 2001, the couple moved to Lindsborg, 
Kansas. During retirement, the couple enjoyed travelling, especially 
spending winter months in Green Valley, AZ.

Throughout her life, Janet had many interests. She was involved in 
4-H as a leader in all communities she lived and active in her 
children’s activities.

She was a talented singer and musician. She gave piano lessons after 
school and provided special music at many events. Janet was an active 
member of the Goodland Federated Music Club. She also directed various 
church choirs including a high school youth choir “The Good Life 
Singers” which travelled to various congregations in several states, 
spreading the Good News.

Janet was very active in church work including teaching Sunday 
School, Bible School, Bible study groups and serving many offices for 
the Tri State Conference in the ALCW. She attended many ALC/ELCA 
national conventions as a delegate and served on the Central District 
Church Council.

She enjoyed history and genealogy. Janet researched and complied 
family histories and was instrumental in family reunions. Janet was also
 interested in Native American History and worked at the Navaho Lutheran
 Mission in Arizona. She presented many programs telling the Navaho 
story.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Esther Werner,
 her father and mother in-law, John and Carrie Malpert, Stepfather, 
Marvin Malpert, &nbsp;sister-in-laws, Jane Malpert and Jan Werner, and 
brother-in-law, Kenneth Malpert

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Darrell of Lindsborg, Ks 
and their three daughters, Dawn (Kendal) Rohr of Canton, KS, Avona 
(Scott) Wennihan of Columbus, NE, Meredith (Wayne) Pohlmann of Deshler, 
NE, brother Ronald Werner of Poplar Grove, IL and brother and sister 
in-law, Merlin and Barbara Malpert of Nice, MO. She was a proud 
grandparent to Bret (Zoe) and Scott (Tiffany) Rohr, Miranda (Todd) 
Jackson, Whitney (AJ) Bayerl, Emily Pohlmann, Megan (Zach) Mason, Jared 
(Cheyanna) and Ragan Pohlmann, fourteen great-grandchildren, many 
friends, and relatives.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday October 8, 2022, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Lindsborg, KS. Burial will be at a later date in Deshler, NE.

Janet Ruth (Werner) Malpert

Philip Alan Schreiber, 71, passed away September 21, 2022, at his home in Larned.

He was born February 13, 1951, in Great Bend, the son of Elmer Leon and Mildred L. Fairchild Schreiber.

A lifetime area resident, raised on a farm south of Larned, he was a 
member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned.&nbsp; He was an Activity 
Therapist at Larned State Hospital and later a Para Educator for USD 
495. He enjoyed yardwork and gardening, running, attending his children 
and grandchildren’s activities, and spending time with family.

On December 3, 1977, he married Ann Vratil in Larned; she survives.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Stefanie (Cody) Turner, 
Wamego, Emily (Michael) Racette, Larned; six grandchildren, Savannah 
Racette, Brayson Bird, Camden Bird, Kennedy Bird, Dalton Turner, Adreana
 Turner; and his loyal companion, Sandy.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; step father, Bill Hanshew; 
brother, Eldon Schreiber; two step brothers, Dudley Hanshew, and Dean 
Hanshew.

Memorial mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 1, 2022, at Sacred 
Heart Catholic Church, Larned, with Father Bernard Felix presiding.

Robert Allen Prentice, age 85, passed away Monday, September 12, 2022 at Highlands Park Care Center in Alliance, Nebraska. He was born April 6, 1937 in Mullen, Nebraska to Robert B. and Elsie A. Prentice. He attended high school in Mullen and graduated in 1956. He ranched on the original Prentice homestead north of Mullen and had a meat processing business for many years to supplement the family income.

On July 3, 1970, he married Bonnie L. Vargason, becoming a father to Allen Vargason. To this union were born two daughters, Melanie Lee in 1971, and Michele Lynn in 1973.

He leased the Fay Reigle ranch for several years and managed both places with long trips between the two with cattle and machinery.

In October 1995, the couple moved to Mullen and Robert worked at the COOP for fifteen years before retiring.

He was a wonderful, loving husband and father. He always made time to spend with family, and they enjoyed many fishing and camping trips.&nbsp; Many seasons of haying labor were made as a family unit as well. &nbsp;Some of Robert’s hobbies included making marble boards, playing cards, and he also volunteered as a guide for the Sharptail Shootout. Robert thoroughly enjoyed having his numerous nieces and nephews come stay at the ranch. Robert was a very compassionate and humble man with high expectations. He was always concerned about others’ comfort and happiness before his own.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife Bonnie of Alliance, Nebraska; son Allen and Nancy Vargason of Lincoln, Nebraska; daughter Melanie and Mario Aguilera of Scott City, Kansas; daughter Michele Prentice of Newcastle, Wyoming; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.&nbsp; He is also survived by his twin sisters, Mildred Szwanek of Mullen, NE and Myra Fackler of Wellfleet, Ne.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and one sister.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, September 24 at 2:00 pm MT at Cedarview Cemetery in Mullen, a luncheon for family and friends will be held prior to the service at noon MT at the Hooker County Ag Building located at the Fairgrounds in Mullen.

Shirley Ann (Davis) Cochran, 80, of Pampa, TX died Monday, August 15, 2022.&nbsp;

Shirley was born October 7, 1941, in Chickasha, Oklahoma, the daughter of Beuren F. and Lela E. (Carpenter) Davis.  She attended Chickasha public schools as well as OCW in Chickasha.  Shirley sewed for several years including costumes for the Madrigal Ball held at Fort Hays State University, making her own patterns.  She was an awesome cook as well as a great seamstress and sewed for whoever needed clothing made, she also babysat several kids.&nbsp;

 She married Pete D. “Sonny” Cochran April 15, 1961, in Chickasha, Oklahoma.  Shirley was a loving mother, kind and caring, but you did not want to touch her glass of tea while collecting glasses and dishes for washing.   She devoted her life in being a wonderful housewife, raising her own 4 children while taking care of others while their parents worked.  She also spent hours sewing for others.   She loved sewing, embroidery, and crocheting.  Her and Pete bought Franklin Crafts in Hays, Kansas which she sold prior to moving back to Oklahoma.  She also served as a Brownie and Girl Scout, Cub Scout, and Boy Scout leader.

Her faith was beyond measure as Shirley had full faith in the Lord.  She was saved at around the age of 14 and baptized in her mid-30s. 

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and a brother Sam Davis.

Survivors include her children, Kim (and Butch) Hendrix of Indiana, Mike (and Laurie) Cochran, Chris (and Christine) Cochran all of Kansas, and Barry Cochran, of Texas; grandchildren, Haley, Allison, Trey, Avery and Alex; step-grandchildren, Jeff and Steph; great-grandchildren, Kaycie, Spencer and Casper; step- great-grandchildren, Lexi, Kylie, Chase, Bradley and Logan; her sister, Karen (and Bobby) Smith of Oklahoma; sister-in-law, Juanita (and James “Chief”) Cook all of Oklahoma; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, October 22, at 10 a.m. at Fairlawn Cemetery, Chickasha, Oklahoma.

Lifelong Goodland, KS resident Keith Scott Wieck, 66, passed away on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at the Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, CO.

Keith was born on November 6, 1955, in Goodland to Bob and Shirley (Johnson) Wieck. &nbsp;He attended school in Goodland and graduated with the Class of 1974.

While in school, Keith played football and wrestled. &nbsp;He took first place in his weight class in State Competition his senior year. &nbsp;After graduation, he went to work in Construction and then he and his dad started Wieck and Wieck Construction Company, which he worked at for many years.

He certainly loved his nieces, and spent much time with them camping, hunting and fishing. &nbsp;He was called Uncle Keith by many of his nieces friends.

Preceding him in death were his father, his grandparents, and man<a></a>y aunts, uncles and cousins.

He leaves to mourn his mother Shirley of Goodland, KS, his brother Randy Wieck of St. Francis, KS and his sister Shelly (Brian) Bellamy of Sharon Springs, KS; five nieces, one nephew, two aunts and many cousins.

Memorial services will be held on&nbsp;Thursday,&nbsp;September&nbsp;29, 2022, at 3:00 PM MT at Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Goodland with Pastor&nbsp;Brent Flanders&nbsp;officiating.

Joyce C. Carlton was born June 11, 1951, in Oberlin, KS to 
William Herbert and Nelda L. (Rhodes) Vaughn. She passed away September 
20, 2022, at Hays Medical Center at the age of 71.

Joyce grew 
up in Jennings, KS and graduated from Jennings High School. She married 
Steve C. Carlton on July 11, 1970, in Dresden, KS. Joyce owned the 
Frontier Restaurant for many years. Owning a restaurant was the perfect 
job for her because she loved cooking. She also enjoyed helping others, 
visiting with family and friends, going to casinos, and playing bingo.

Joyce
 was preceded in death by her parents, William and Nelda; sister, Wilma 
Keith; brother-in-law, Ed McKenna; father-in-law, Clair Carlton, and 
sister-in-law, Cindy Connolly. She is survived by her husband, Steve of 
Oberlin; children: Brad Carlton of Lincoln, NE, Scott Carlton of 
Oberlin, KS and Melissa Carlton of Oberlin, KS; siblings, Gloria McKenna
 of Colby, KS and Gary (Judy) Vaughn of Henderson, CO; grandchildren:

Joyce Colleen Carlton

On Monday, September 19th, 2022, Stormy Desiray Rogers passed away at
 Hays Medical Center, Hays, Ks., due to an ongoing battle with kidney 
disease.&nbsp; She was 44 years old. She was ushered into heaven by a host of
 Gods servants, she went peacefully.

Stormy was born on October 14th, 1977, to George Arthur 
and Joyce Marie (Morrison) Windham in Sanford, N.C.&nbsp; She lived in 
various states including North Carolina, Kansas, and Oklahoma throughout
 her life’s journey. She married Joseph Wayne Rogers on March 24, 2018, 
in Lacrosse, Ks. Stormy gave birth to her only child, her son, Royal 
Odense Roger at Hays Medical Center on December 3, 2018.

Stormy was a Christian and loved Jesus very much.&nbsp; She loved arts 
&amp; crafts, animals, Winnie the Pooh, dolphins and little children.&nbsp; 
She also loved country music, hanging out with friends and dancing.&nbsp;

She is survived by her husband, Joseph Wayne Rogers; her 
mother-in-law; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.&nbsp; A special mention to
 her best-friend, Carey Lee for being a forever childhood friend. She 
was preceded in death by her father and mother, George Arthur and Joyce 
Marie Windham; her brother, Robert Earl Morrison; and her beloved son, 
Royal Odense Rogers.&nbsp;

Her Celebration of Life is scheduled for Saturday, October 15th,
 2022, at First Street Church, 601 E. First, Hoisington, Ks. at 11:00

He was born January 12, 1984, in Dodge City, KS, the son of Ronald N.

engineer.

He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Jetmore, KS.&nbsp; Ryan
 attended Bethany College, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s and 
played football. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved spending time 
with his children.

On July 28, 2007, he married Jordan Lonnberg in Jetmore, KS.&nbsp; They later divorced.

Survivors include: father, Ron (Paula) Wilson, Jetmore, KS; mother, 
Debbie (Marty) Wright, Council Grove, KS; son, Alec Wilson, of the home;
 daughter, Brynn Wilson, of the home; brother, Rustin Wilson, Jetmore,

Janet Lynn “Jan” Selfridge, 68, passed away September 19, 2022, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

Janet was born September 17, 1954, in Larned, Kansas, the daughter of 
Claude and Cristina Carter Selfridge. She enjoyed growing up on the 
family farm northwest of Hanston where she attended school and graduated
 from Hanston High School in 1973.

A longtime Larned resident, she was a Licensed Mental Health 
Technician at Larned State Hospital for over 30 years. She loved to 
crochet and made many afghans for family and friends, she also enjoyed 
cross stitch and diamond art. She participated in Bike Across Kansas, 
biking one year and following Lee for two years. She loved her 
neighbors, her dog, Asher, and her cats: Goldie, Oreo, Runt, BT (Black 
Tail), Little Fluff, and Grease Spot.

Survivors include: Brother, Allen (DianaLynn) Selfridge, Hanston; 
sister, Lois (Bill) Price, Rozel; children, Charles Carroll, Salina, 
Cindy (Phil) Denning, Wichita, and Candi (Steve) Castillo, Boise, ID; 
nephew, Doug (Anne) Maxwell, Andale; nieces, Lori (Keith) Finney,

Joe Rholand Ward Jr., age 59 of Hays, Kansas passed away September 20, 2022, at Hays Medical Center. He was born April 14, 1963, in Hays to Joe Rholand Ward and Patricia (Felten) Ward. He was a 1981 Hays High School graduate and attended Fort Hays State University.

Joe spent numerous years in management with McDonald's in Russell, Kansas, and corporate McDonald's stores in Texas. Years later, Joe relocated to Tahlequah, Oklahoma, to the Cherokee Indian Nation, a proud heritage he treasured, there he held the position as a adolescent counselor.

Joe's closest companions were his two dogs; Buddy and Baby Girl. Joe was exceptionally talented in the art of making flutes, bows/arrows, and Cherokee Indian beading. He enjoyed nature and the outdoors.

He is survived by a sister, Karen Munsch and husband Bob, Schoenchen, Kansas, one uncle, Pete (Fritz) Felten, Hays,&nbsp;a stepdaughter, Stephanie Jacobs and husband Anthony, Emporia, Kansas, two step grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Terry Lee Stegman and stepson Jason Ickier.

Graveside services will be 1:00 pm&nbsp; Sunday, September 25, 2022, at Mt. Allen Cemetery, Hays, Kansas.

Joe Rholand Ward Jr.

On July 16, 1952, Vicki Diane Clark was born, the daughter of 
Lawrence Jr. and Mildred Clark. She was the youngest of their six 
children. Vicki grew up riding horses, milking cows, and hauling hay.

Vicki’s
 passion has always been children, her own children, grandchildren, and 
great-grandchildren. Church has always been important, even before 
becoming “the pastor’s wife.” Her ministry in church was focused on 
children – children’s choir director, teaching Sunday school, vacation 
bible school and working with youth groups.

Her calling
 was intercessory prayer. She prayed with people and for people. She 
talked about Jesus to anyone who was important to her, including those 
serving in restaurants. And she would quote scripture. She often quoted 3
 John 1:4, “I have no greater joy than to know that my children walk in 
truth.”

Her career was Early Childhood Education – 
working mostly with Head Start Programs. She worked for NEK-CAP, SEK-CAP
 and as a consultant for Dayna International. Regardless of the job or 
project she was working on, the intent was to provide an environment 
where children could have the courage and confidence to be themselves 
while respecting others.

Vicki lived in the house she 
was born in until she married the love of her life, Bob Whitaker. During
 the 53 years of marriage, they lived in 20 different houses, home is 
truly where the heart is. And her heart was given to Jesus, to her 
family and friends, to the church, and to Head Start. So, wherever she 
was, she was at home.

Vicki enjoyed life, from a tree 
swing and tin barn roof for a slipper slide to holding great grandkids 
while in a wheelchair. Vicki lived. Vicki worked. Vicki played, even 
gaining the name “the grandma who plays.” But most of all Vicki loved.

She
 walked with Jesus daily and on September 18, 2022, they were closer to 
His house. So, she went home with Jesus. Praise God, there is victory in
 Jesus.&nbsp; And now through faith in Jesus, she is in that blissful place 
of perfect love, home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her three siblings: Joan Buttler, Phillip Clark and Charles Clark.

Vicki
 is survived by her husband Bob, of the home; her daughters, Julie 
(Larry) Myers, of Manhattan, and Amber (Konrad) Coe, of Soldier, KS; 
also her grandchildren: Leah Windmeyer, of Kansas City, KS, Brett (Ela) 
Roes, of Rapid City, SD, Rachelle (Aaron) Bean, of Waldo, KS, Kelsey 
(Derrick) Allen, of Soldier, KS, Lance Coe, of Soldier, KS; five 
great-grandkids: Bastian Reynolds-Roes, Braely Roes, Theodore “Theo” 
Bean, Dane Allen, and Judson “Judd” Bean; and also her siblings, Carole 
(Don) Haun, of Fall River, KS and Bill (Karen) Clark, of Fredonia, KS.

Memorial
 services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday September 23, 2022 at the 
College Avenue United Methodist Church, 1609 College Avenue in 
Manhattan, with Rev. Kay Scarbrough officiating.  Private Inurnment will

where children could have the courage and confidence to be themselves 
while respecting others.Vicki lived in the house she 
was born in until she married the love of her life, Bob Whitaker. During
 the 53 years of marriage, they lived in 20 different houses, home is 
truly where the heart is. And her heart was given to Jesus, to her 
family and friends, to the church, and to Head Start. So, wherever she 
was, she was at home.Vicki enjoyed life, from a tree 
swing and tin barn roof for a slipper slide to holding great grandkids 
while in a wheelchair. Vicki lived. Vicki worked. Vicki played, even 
gaining the name “the grandma who plays.” But most of all Vicki loved.She
 walked with Jesus daily and on September 18, 2022, they were closer to 
His house. So, she went home with Jesus. Praise God, there is victory in
 Jesus.&nbsp; And now through faith in Jesus, she is in that blissful place 
of perfect love, home.She was preceded in death by her parents, and her three siblings: Joan Buttler, Phillip Clark and Charles Clark.Vicki
 is survived by her husband Bob, of the home; her daughters, Julie 
(Larry) Myers, of Manhattan, and Amber (Konrad) Coe, of Soldier, KS; 
also her grandchildren: Leah Windmeyer, of Kansas City, KS, Brett (Ela) 
Roes, of Rapid City, SD, Rachelle (Aaron) Bean, of Waldo, KS, Kelsey 
(Derrick) Allen, of Soldier, KS, Lance Coe, of Soldier, KS; five 
great-grandkids: Bastian Reynolds-Roes, Braely Roes, Theodore “Theo” 
Bean, Dane Allen, and Judson “Judd” Bean; and also her siblings, Carole 
(Don) Haun, of Fall River, KS and Bill (Karen) Clark, of Fredonia, KS.Memorial
 services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday September 23, 2022 at the 
College Avenue United Methodist Church, 1609 College Avenue in 
Manhattan, with Rev. Kay Scarbrough officiating. Private Inurnment will

Lillian Mae Koger

Leon Joseph Klug, 86, passed away September 20, 2022, at Kansas Heart
 Hospital, Wichita, Kan.&nbsp; He was born December 28, 1935, in rural 
Redwing, Kan., to Julius and Matilda (Boor) Klug. Leon married Lois 
Louise Schremmer October 3, 1956, in Beaver, Kansas.&nbsp; She died October 
2, 2019.

A current resident of Hoisington, Leon was a lifetime resident of the
 Susank and Redwing areas and graduated from Odin in 1953.&nbsp; He was a 
pipeline welder for Producer's Gas and Midwest Energy.&nbsp; Leon was a 
current member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hoisington, 
and Knights of Columbus Council #2917, Odin, and former member of Holy 
Name Catholic Church, Odin.&nbsp; He was passionate about his Catholic faith,
 and enjoyed baseball, being an avid fan of the Kansas City Royals.&nbsp; He 
also enjoyed country music and classic western shows, such as The 
Virginian and Gunsmoke, and any outdoor activities, such as bow hunting 
deer and fishing.&nbsp; He will be dearly missed by his family and friends, 
who will remember him for his kind and gentle soul.

He is survived by his son, Dr. Kirby Klug of Overland Park; daughter,
 Kala Crites-Clary and Jim Clary of Overland Park; son, Kelly and Cindy 
Klug of Olathe; grandson, Nick and Leslie Klug of Great Bend; 
granddaughter, Katie Klug of Leawood; granddaughter, Maggie Klug of 
Leawood; grandson, Brady and Kelsi Crites of Vancouver, Wash.; and 
granddaughter, Brooke Crites of Overland Park, great-grandchildren, 
Olivia and Liam Klug of Great Bend, and Kaden Crites of Vancouver; and 
brother Jim Klug of Odin.&nbsp; He is preceded in passing by his wife Lois; 
brother Alois “Lou” Klug; and two sisters, Eleanor Klug Reif and 
Margaret Klug Brenner.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 23, 
2022, at St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church, Hoisington, with 
Father Anselm Eke, MSP presiding.&nbsp; Interment will follow at St. John 
Catholic Cemetery, Hoisington. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 8:00 pm, 
Thursday, September 22, 2022, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, 
Hoisington, with a Vigil and Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:00 p.m.

Leon Joseph Klug

Sarah Lloyd, age 86, of Loveland, Colorado, passed from this life on September 15, 2022.&nbsp; She was born in Larned, Kansas, on January 4, 1936, to Warren and Eloise Phillips.&nbsp;

Sarah graduated in 1954 from Great Bend High School
 in Great Bend, Kansas. During her high school years, she was a member 
of the International High School Honor Society of Journalism.&nbsp; After 
graduating, she attended Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas,&nbsp; for a year.&nbsp; There she belonged to Delta Sigma Epsilon Sorority and to 
the Women’s Recreation Association.&nbsp; In 1971-72, she attended Barton County Community College in Great Bend, Kansas, where she received an associate degree in Criminal Justice.

In 1955, Sarah was first hired at Larned State Hospital
 as a summer employee in the Activity Therapy Department.&nbsp; This was the 
beginning of her 38 year career with the State of Kansas.&nbsp; She worked in
 several areas during those years in activity therapy including 
recreation, occupational therapy and Volunteer Services Department.&nbsp; As 
time passed, she was selected as the Patient Work Program Coordinator 
which then led to a position with the Youth Center Juvenile Corrections 
as the Work Program Development Coordinator.&nbsp; She developed new training
 programs for 16-18 year old boys.&nbsp; Shortly before her retirement, she 
was elected to the Correctional Youth Services Association Board.&nbsp; She 
retired in 1996.

Sarah moved to Colorado
 in 1996 to be closer to her daughter and family.&nbsp; After moving to 
Colorado, she enjoyed attending all of her grandson’s sporting events 
come rain, hail, sleet or snow.&nbsp; It didn’t matter, she was there.&nbsp; 
Sarah, herself, was a competitor on the softball field in her younger 
years.&nbsp; She was a fierce competitor when playing Hand &amp; Foot or 
Cribbage with family and friends.&nbsp; Sarah loved to entertain and cook up a
 wicked feast for family and friends.&nbsp; She also loved wood crafting and 
painting as she had that artistic talent.&nbsp;

Sarah is survived 
by daughter, Barbara Racette, son-in-law, Kevin Racette, grandson, Scott
 Racette, sister Joan Waldron along with many nieces, nephews, and 
cousins.

Sarah was preceded 
in death by her parents, sisters Patricia Mohn Nickels, Barbara Ellis, 
adopted sister Kate Stewart, and a brother Wes Phillips.

Sarah was a fun, loving, caring person and will be deeply missed by family and friends

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Sarah Phillips Lloyd Memorial Fund and sent to Viegut Funeral Home.

Memorial service 
will be held on Friday, September 30, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Viegut

Ima Kaye Shaffer, 78, of Russell, Kansas, died on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at the&nbsp;Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas.

Kaye&nbsp;was born on April 24, 1944,&nbsp;in&nbsp;Heber Springs, Arkansas, the daughter of Floyd and Ella A.&nbsp;(Ezell) Southerland. &nbsp;She grew up&nbsp;in&nbsp;Arkansas and at age 13 her family moved to Wichita, Kansas. &nbsp;She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to W.R.&nbsp;“Bub”&nbsp;Shaffer on December 20, 1986, in Russell, Kansas. &nbsp;Bub preceded her in death on December 21, 2003. &nbsp;After Bub’s death she spent many years with her companion Jim Young. &nbsp;

Kaye&nbsp;worked as owner and operator of Shaffer Investments.&nbsp;&nbsp;She loved spending time with her children&nbsp;and grandchildren.&nbsp;She enjoyed gardening, cooking, playing&nbsp;guitar, decorating her home and&nbsp;taking&nbsp;good care of her cats. &nbsp;She&nbsp;especially enjoyed decorating her home for Christmas and other holidays throughout the year.&nbsp;

Surviving family include her son David Riley and wife Gina of Plainville, Kansas; daughter Linda Murphy and&nbsp;companion&nbsp;Eddie Gil of&nbsp;Hays, Kansas; sister Ruth Wheeler of Wichita, Kansas; 11 grandchildren, many great grandchildren;&nbsp;many nieces and nephews&nbsp;and her beloved cat Simon.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bub Shaffer, 2 brothers, 2 sisters and 1 granddaughter.

A celebration&nbsp;of Kaye’s life will be held&nbsp;at 10 A.M. on Friday, September 23, 2022, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Russell, Kansas&nbsp;with Pastor Michael Eurit&nbsp;officiating. &nbsp;Burial will follow at the Russell&nbsp;City Cemetery. &nbsp;Visitation will be from 1 P.M. to 8 P.M. on Thursday, September&nbsp;22, 2022, at the mortuary with family greeting guests from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. Thursday evening. &nbsp;
