Joe F. Lobato, age 77 of Hays, Kansas, died Thursday, October 6, 2022, at&nbsp;Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.&nbsp;

He was born May 5, 1945, in Fruita, Colorado, to Benjamin and Lena (Serato) Lobato.

Joe married Carol (Smith) on April 10,&nbsp;1970,&nbsp;at Fruita, Colorado.

He was raised and attended school in Fruita, and lived in the Colby&nbsp;and Selden,&nbsp;Kansas, area for 50 years. &nbsp;He was a welder for the Golden Plains Ag Tech&nbsp;in Colby&nbsp;and&nbsp;retired&nbsp;in 2021. &nbsp;Joe and Carol moved to Hays in&nbsp;May of 2022. &nbsp;He enjoyed fishing and attending the grandkids&nbsp;school and&nbsp;sports activities. &nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Carol, of the home; his children, Joe Lobato and wife, Sandra, Ellis, KS; John Lobato and wife, Angie, Salina, KS; Janelle Lobato&nbsp;and husband, John Gay,&nbsp;Hays, KS; ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Jace Lobato; three brothers and two sisters.

A private family service and inurnment will be held at a later date.

The family suggests memorials made payable to:&nbsp;The City of Selden (for the walking path) in care of the mortuary.

Lucille Rupp, age 92, of Hays, Kansas, passed to her eternal reward while at her home on Wednesday, October 5, 2022. Lucille was born on May 5, 1930 to Joseph and Sophia (Pfannenstiel) Rupp. Lucille was the eleventh child of fifteen, growing up on a farm near Liebenthal and La Crosse, Kansas until the family moved to Hays.&nbsp; That same day she enrolled as a Freshman at Girls Catholic High School.&nbsp; She graduated from GCHS in 1948, attended St. Mary’s College in Leavenworth, Kansas, from 1949-1953 graduating with a degree in Music.&nbsp; God gifted Lucille with an outstanding coloratura singing voice with a range of 3½ octaves. She could reach 3-4 notes above ‘High C’ and 3-4 notes below ‘Low C’.&nbsp; Lucille made several vocal recordings to submit to the Fulbright Scholarship Board, which her family now cherishes. She sang solos at GCHS and at various events in the Hays area and received the Fulbright Scholarship award to study voice in Vienna, Austria.&nbsp; She also performed in operas in Vienna. &nbsp; When the scholarship funding was ending in 1956, Lucille became employed with the US Atomic Energy Commission as a US Federal Employee to personally continue funding her vocal training.&nbsp; Lucille loved to travel and experience other cultures. She traveled to Sri Lanka, India in the late 50’s to study the Indian culture before returning home to Hays where she again enrolled in Fort Hays State College and earned a Degree in Nursing. &nbsp; With her love to travel, she practiced nursing in Utah and California and while living in Phoenix, Arizona, having perfect diction, she read books on the radio where she met her current husband, Bob Shanahan. &nbsp; Lucille had a love for gardening and everyone who visited her home enjoyed her extensive flower gardens.&nbsp; She became very devoted again to her childhood parish of St. Joseph Church and loved to garden their landscape well into her later years.&nbsp; Lucille is survived by her husband, Robert Shanahan of Hays; two sisters, Zita (Robert “Bob”) Zimmerman, Catherine “Cattie” John “Jack” Geyer, both of Canon City, Colorado; brother-in-law, Mark Weigel of Wakeeney, Kansas; and sister-in-law, Patricia Rupp of Wichita, Kansas. &nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Sophia Rupp; siblings, Marcellus Rupp; Alice (Ambrose) Herrman, Albina “Sandy” (Kenneth) Moore, Irene (Clarence) Leiker, Severin (Alice) Rupp, Harry “Rusty” (Terry) Rupp, Virgil “Blackie” Rupp, Mary (Eugene “Lefty”) Werth, Marcellus “Mark” (Patricia) Rupp, Anna “Annie” (Howard) Cox, Rudolph “Hank” (Elizabeth “Betty”) Rupp, and Pauline “Gigi” Weigel. Lucille Rupp

Heaven has claimed the life of Joy C. Johnson of Manhattan, KS. She was 83 years old and died peacefully on October 4, 2022 at Meadowlark Hills. She fought a battle with cancer for the last year. Joy
 was born on May 1, 1939 in Plainville, KS to Louis and Opal Hrabe. She 
was a graduate of&nbsp; Stockton High School, class of 1957. She moved to 
Manhattan, KS to attend ManhattanChristian College where she met the 
love of her life, Dennis Johnson. They were married on December 20, 
1958. Dennis and Joy raised two children, Judy Jo (1960) and 
David Duane (1961). They spent their early married years in Abilene, KS 
where Dennis worked at KP&amp;L and Joy received a bachelor’s degree 
from Marymount College in Salina, KS. Joy taught social sciences at 
Abilene High School. They also managed the King Solomon Christian Camp 
near Solomon, KS while working their jobs in Abilene. Joy was well known
 for her excellent homemade food she prepared for the campers each 
summer. The Lord called them to move to Manhattan, KS and join 
the Manhattan Christian College family. They held several job positions 
depending on the needs of the College. After the high school graduations
 of their children from Manhattan High School, Dennis and Joy moved to 
the Johnson family farm south of Abilene, KS to take care of Grandpa 
Frank and the farm. During this time, Joy enjoyed raising a few horses 
and showing them with her daughter and grandchildren. She won several 
awards on the Eastern Kansas Horseman’s Association and made many friends. Faith
 and Family were a big part of Joy’s life. She cherished her personal 
relationship with her savior, Jesus Christ. She loved studying her Bible
 and preparing Bible lessons to share with others. She also loved 
playing the piano and organ for church services. Joy was a faithful member
 of the First Christian Church in Abilene and the University Christian 
Church in Manhattan. Joy was a loving, caring grandmother who was very generous. She loved spending as much time as she could with her 
grandchildren and her great granddaughters even as she was battling cancer during the past year. Joy
 is survived by her daughter, Judy Parsons and husband, Bob of Hugoton, 
KS; sons David Johnson and wife Keiko of Manhattan and Bill Watt and 
wife, Katherine of Junction City, KS; Grandchildren Eli Gantenbein, 
Salina; Levi Gantenbein and wife Katelyn, Manhattan; Claire Johnson, 
San Diego, CA and Donny Johnson, Manhattan. Great granddaughters Emma 
and Amelia Gantenbein, Manhattan. Her sisters Betty Raney of CA and 
Phyllis Hart of Plainville; and her brother, Debert Hrabe and wife 
Jeanne of Overland Park, KS. She will be missed by her many extended family members and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Johnson; her parents; her step father, Leo Bonneau; her brother Doyal Hrabe. A
 private family celebration is being planned for the near future.

Joy C. Johnson 

Roger Maris Loesch was born Dec. 2, 1960, at Coldwater. His parents 
were Jack A. Loesch and Margaret Ann (Maris) Loesch. She preceded him in
 death. 

Roger's early childhood was spent in Protection, then 
later in Munjor. He attended Munjor Grade School and graduated from 
Thomas More Prep in Hays.

 Roger had a love of the great outdoors,
 animals and books. He also loved his husky, Dakota.  He had many jobs 
throughout his life and they were usually outdoors. Since early 
childhood, Roger was a seeker of knowledge. Even though he loved the 
internet, he still preferred his books. 

Roger is survived by his father; stepmother; two sisters; his children; grandchildren; aunts; uncles and many cousins.

Roger Maris Loesch

Jason Lee Brown, age 44, of WaKeeney, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, October 5, 2022, in Hays, Kansas. Jason was born in Hays on January 28, 1978, to Walter Dale and Penny Louise (Cain) Brown. He graduated from Trego Community High School and continued his education at Northwest Kansas Technical College in Goodland, Kansas, where he trained in diesel technology.

Jason was previously married, and was engaged to the love of his life, Dawnna. He worked as a heavy diesel mechanic for Flatlander Dirtworks at the time of his passing. Jason was an avid hunter with a lifetime hunter’s license, enjoyed fishing, cooking, barbecuing, gardening, curing jerky, and even made his own moonshine.&nbsp;

Jason was a true family man who loved his dog Lilo. He was very lucky with the lotto and would give the shirt off his back for anyone in need. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles lodge #3774 in WaKeeney.

Jason is survived by his fiancé Dawnna Bostick of WaKeeney;&nbsp;step-son Michael Burbach;&nbsp;step-daughter Karlee Burbach&nbsp;and&nbsp;son-in-law John Jarrell of Salina;&nbsp;step-daughter Raina Bostick, of WaKeeney; father Walter (Janet) Brown, of Cimarron, Kansas, and mother Penny Anderson of WaKeeney; daughters Kassie and Abigail Brown; granddaughter Elayna Jarrell and grandson Ayden Jackson; brother Jeffrey (fiancé Roxy Ellis) of WaKeeney; sister Melissa Marie Rothgeb of Cimarron; nephew Trenton Brown; niece Makala Brown; and many aunts and uncles.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and stepfather David Anderson.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, October 10, 2022, at Schmitt Funeral Home with Pastor Jerod Brown officiating. Burial will follow at WaKeeney City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 PM on Sunday, October 9, 2022, at Schmitt Funeral Home, WaKeeney.

Jason Lee Brown

David Earl Harding passed away on Sunday, October 2, 2022, after battling prostate cancer. 
 David was born in Isabel, Kansas to Earl Everett Harding and Margaret 
(Thompson) Harding on September 4, 1940. He grew up working on the 
family farm, hunting and fishing, participating in Scouts, and playing 
sports. He graduated from Isabel High School in 1958 and attended Pratt 
Junior College in Pratt, Kansas, on a basketball scholarship, continuing 
his education at Kansas State University and Fort Hays State while 
working to put himself through school. David was recruited to 
the Kansas Highway Patrol in 1962 as one of the youngest troopers ever 
hired in the state. His patrol territories included Hutchison, Russell, 
and Hays, where his specialties were nabbing DUIs, car chases, and 
recovering stolen vehicles. David was introduced to Doris A. Jorns on a 
blind date in 1963 and they married later that year in August, 1963. A 
son, Reece, was born in 1966, David’s own “Little Trooper” who 
eventually grew up to serve on the Wichita city police force. 
David began a more than 30-year career with Farmers Insurance Group 
(FIG) in 1968 as a Claims Adjuster in Wichita, Kansas. While living in 
Wichita, a daughter, Ann Marie, was born in 1971. Much like her father, 
she was in a hurry to arrive, and they almost didn’t make it to the 
hospital in time. In 1976, David accepted a promotion from FIG and moved
 the family to Denver, Colorado, and soon thereafter to Colorado 
Springs, Colorado, where he worked as a Regional Budget Manager. In 
1984, he was promoted to Branch Claims Manager in the Moore, Oklahoma 
FIG office. While in Moore, he also served as the FIG Liability Manager 
for the state of Oklahoma, tasked with managing a $500 million budget 
and supervising a team of over 100 employees. David retired from Farmers
 Insurance Group in 2003. In retirement, David enjoyed working
 on old cars, especially his 1949 Ford, taking care of his lawn and 
garden, eating out and grilling at home, watching football games, 
fishing, traveling to see his grandchildren- of whom he was always very 
proud! - and spending time with family and friends. David is 
preceded in death by his parents Earl and Margaret. He is survived by 
his wife of 59 years, Doris, his son Reece Harding, daughter Ann Ashmon,
 son-in-law Scott Ashmon, grandchildren Gunnar and Elsa Ashmon, and his 
siblings Evelyn (Jack) Jessup, Shirley (Joe) Wood, Vicki (Dennis) Chinn,

 </figure>David Earl Harding passed away on Sunday, October 2, 2022, after battling prostate cancer. 
 David was born in Isabel, Kansas to Earl Everett Harding and Margaret 
(Thompson) Harding on September 4, 1940. He grew up working on the 
family farm, hunting and fishing, participating in Scouts, and playing 
sports. He graduated from Isabel High School in 1958 and attended Pratt 
Junior College in Pratt, Kansas, on a basketball scholarship, continuing 
his education at Kansas State University and Fort Hays State while 
working to put himself through school. David was recruited to 
the Kansas Highway Patrol in 1962 as one of the youngest troopers ever 
hired in the state. His patrol territories included Hutchison, Russell, 
and Hays, where his specialties were nabbing DUIs, car chases, and 
recovering stolen vehicles. David was introduced to Doris A. Jorns on a 
blind date in 1963 and they married later that year in August, 1963. A 
son, Reece, was born in 1966, David’s own “Little Trooper” who 
eventually grew up to serve on the Wichita city police force. 
David began a more than 30-year career with Farmers Insurance Group 
(FIG) in 1968 as a Claims Adjuster in Wichita, Kansas. While living in 
Wichita, a daughter, Ann Marie, was born in 1971. Much like her father, 
she was in a hurry to arrive, and they almost didn’t make it to the 
hospital in time. In 1976, David accepted a promotion from FIG and moved
 the family to Denver, Colorado, and soon thereafter to Colorado 
Springs, Colorado, where he worked as a Regional Budget Manager. In 
1984, he was promoted to Branch Claims Manager in the Moore, Oklahoma 
FIG office. While in Moore, he also served as the FIG Liability Manager 
for the state of Oklahoma, tasked with managing a $500 million budget 
and supervising a team of over 100 employees. David retired from Farmers
 Insurance Group in 2003. In retirement, David enjoyed working
 on old cars, especially his 1949 Ford, taking care of his lawn and 
garden, eating out and grilling at home, watching football games, 
fishing, traveling to see his grandchildren- of whom he was always very 
proud! - and spending time with family and friends. David is 
preceded in death by his parents Earl and Margaret. He is survived by 
his wife of 59 years, Doris, his son Reece Harding, daughter Ann Ashmon,
 son-in-law Scott Ashmon, grandchildren Gunnar and Elsa Ashmon, and his 
siblings Evelyn (Jack) Jessup, Shirley (Joe) Wood, Vicki (Dennis) Chinn,
 and Vernon (Mary Lou) Harding, as well as several nieces and nephews.

David Earl Harding

Gail Jean Williams was born July 1, 1941, in Montezuma, Kansas, to 
Ralph and Flossie (Leighton) Perkins. She passed away October 4, 2022, in
 Salina, KS at the age of 81.

Gail attended high school at Hays 
High School and graduated in 1959. She went on to receive her Bachelor’s
 at Pittsburg State University and Master’s degree from Fort Hays State 
University. She was a teacher in Goodland, KS for many years but also 
taught in Pittsburg and St. Francis, KS. Gail and John David “Dave” 
Williams shared 30+ years together, then on March 18, 2006, they were 
united in marriage in Wilson, KS .

Gail was an avid reader and 
enjoyed quilting, even after losing her vision she switched to 
audiobooks and continued to quilt. She also enjoyed gardening, 
traveling, and listening to podcasts. She loved keeping in touch with 
her friends and was an animal lover. Gail was most proud of being a 
grandma. She was an active “get down on the floor and play” kind of 
grandma and loved doing experiments, playing trucks, and playing endless
 games of UNO with them.

Gail was preceded in death by her parents
 and brothers, Larry and Don Perkins. She is survived by her husband, 
Dave of Rexford, KS; children: Robert Walter of Sundance, WY, Lee (Anne)
 Walter of Everett, WA and Diane (Jason) Frazier of McPherson, KS; 
grandchildren: Callie Walter, Gavin Frazier, and Nolan Frazier, and 
sister-in-law, Wanda Perkins of Pittsburg, KS.

Memorial services 
will be held Saturday, October 15, 2022, at 11:00AM at the Rexford

Gail Jean Williams

Norton resident Delmer Stewart passed away at the Norton County Hospital on Sunday, October 2, 2022, at the age of 69.

He was born on April 6, 1953, in Los Alamitos, California, to Delmer and Myrtle "Jean" (Clark) Stewart.

Delmer was married to Nancy Scheimo on March 22, 1997, in Norton, Kansas.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his wife Nancy Stewart, parents Delmer and Myrtle "Jean" Stewart, and his brother Richard Davis.

Survivors include his daughters Kristin Stewart, Rachel Stewart, 
Helen Stewart, and Mary Jane Stewart, son Justin Scheimo, brothers Mike 
Davis of&nbsp;Florida, Steve Stewart of California, Robert Davis of North 
Carolina, Scott Stewart of Nevada, sisters Cyndi Turri of Minnesota, 
Dorinda Micks of Iowa, Shelly Timm of California, and Janine Stewart of 
Nevada.

Cremation was planned. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Donald Gene Goetz, “Donnie,” 66, passed away on Tuesday September 6, 2022, at his home in Giddings, Texas. 

Donnie was born on November 20, 1955, in Russell, Kansas, to Donald Adair Goetz and Jackie Jean (Dwinelle) Goetz. Don was a very adventurous child and “wished he was born with wings."

He went on to get his pilot’s license and enjoyed hang gliding, and ultralight planes. Don married Denise Walker in 1976, this union was blessed with two twin daughters Astrid, and Aura.&nbsp;They later divorced, and Don remarried Liz Smith, this union was blessed with two daughters, Kristen and Erin. They later divorced and Don was later united in marriage to Dorothy Cooke, and she proceeds him in death. Don worked as an independent truck driver for Prime Trucking for 26 years and received his 3-million-mile award. Among other hobbies, he enjoyed cooking, gardening, and telling jokes.&nbsp;<a></a>

He was proceeded in death by his father, Donald Goetz, wife, Dorothy Goetz, and an infant brother, David Goetz.&nbsp;

Don is survived by his four daughters, Aura (Paul) Davis of Hays KS, Astrid (Matt) Chatham of Oklahoma City, Erin (Richard) Randall of Iowa, Kristen (Tony) Barnes of Iowa, Mother Jackie Goetz, two sisters, Jaylene Franke&nbsp;(Melvin)&nbsp;and Janna&nbsp;(Craig)&nbsp;Johnson. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Madison, Olivia, Gavin, Caroline, Lana, and Reagan.&nbsp;

A Service and luncheon&nbsp;will be held in Russell at&nbsp;Meridy’s&nbsp;restaurant&nbsp;October 22,2022, at 12 pm.

Donald Gene 'Donnie' Goetz

A bright light was extinguished September 30, 2022, when William H. Klein Jr., age 97, took his last breath.

Bill was born on the family dairy farm southeast of Plains, Kansas, 
March 28, 1925. He was the last of 5 children and the only son. His 
sisters and mother, Dollie Elmena Packard Klein, spoiled him while his 
dad and namesake, William Henry Klein Sr., demanded hard work and strict
 discipline. Young Billie began milking cows at age 5-a mandatory chore,
 twice daily, for the next 11 years instilling a strong work ethic that 
served him well.

In the 7th grade a new music teacher arrived in Plains and discovered
 Bill’s natural, angelic, tenor voice. It was a gift he shared with the 
community as soloist for weddings, funerals, talent shows, church choir,
 and men’s groups. His final public performance was at age 87 when he 
sang a duet with his then 7-year-old niece, Grace. A birthday phone call
 to a family member regaling them with the Happy Birthday song was a 
treasured experience that he continued until his death.

Just days after his high school graduation, Bill declined an 
agricultural deferment to join the US Army Air Corps. He returned 2 
years later a 2nd Lieutenant with wings pinned to his lapel. The war 
ended before he could deploy with his flight crew as a bombardier.

It was the Fall of 1947 when Bill married his lovely, red-headed, 
childhood friend, Ruby Janice Jacobs. They sped off to California in a 
new Ford convertible for their 6-week honeymoon. The wheat crop that 
year had been bountiful and sold for $2/bushel. Within 3 years they were
 homesteading on a farm 20 miles southeast of Tribune WITHOUT 
electricity, running water, an indoor toilet or a telephone; and WITH a 
toddler, Kandee Kae, and a baby, William Huntley. Later, Rock Alan 
followed by Kellee Jo completed the family.

Farming and ranching were the core of Bill’s dry land 
agribusiness-growing wheat, milo and ensilage then grazing heifer calves
 on wheat pasture over the winter. It was a gamble to farm and ranch on 
this arid, finicky prairie; he prevailed with perseverance through the 
best and worst of times. The farm lives on! In the 1970’s he joined 
other community investors to purchase the First National Bank of Tribune
 and sat on the Board of Directors for 29 years.

Bill was a founding member of his beloved “Lunch Bunch”-a group of 
fun- loving individuals who gathered every weekday for lunch at the 
Dixon Drug cafe. Known for his personal and financial generosity, Bill 
could not turn his head to a person or a community organization in need 
and likely contributed to every fundraiser ever held in Greeley County!

However, Bill Klein will be remembered most for his charismatic, 
uplifting SPIRIT; his always-present SMILE and most of all, for his 
legendary, truly- unforgettable LAUGH. He always cited his family as 
his most valued legacy: his wife of 75 years, Janice, to whom he gave 
all the credit for raising their 4 children; Hunt (Vickie) Klein, Rock 
(Teri) Klein, Kellee (Chris) Dixon, and Kandee Klein. He loved and was 
so proud of his 9 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren,

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Myra (Olus) 
Vail , Ethel (Pete) McCormick, Agnes (Elwood) Hill, Shirley (Russel) 
McLaughlin, and daughter-in-law, Marilyn Smith Klein.

His life will be celebrated Saturday, October 22, 2022, 11:00 MST at 
the Tribune United Methodist Church pastored by Jeri Farmer Smith.

Wanda Marie Alcorn Anderson Thummel was born May 11, 1932, to William 
and Verda Hayman Alcorn in Ionia, Kansas.  After an active, productive 
and joy filled life Wanda passed from this world to the next on October 
6, 2022, at the age of 90 years 4 months 25 days.

Wanda
 is survived by her husband of 56 years, Ted Thummel and their family 
James Allen, and his wife Sabrina, McLouth, Regina Marie, Topeka, 
Jonathan Peter and his wife Karen, Topeka and Joel Christopher, Salina. 
 Roxangela Elaine, a daughter died at birth.  Surviving from a previous 
marriage, a son Olaf Carl “Trey” Anderson and his wife Carol, Great 
Bend.  There are now 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Wanda was also preceded in death by her parents, an older brother Robert Laverne and her first husband, Olaf Carl Anderson.

Wanda,
 of Irish, Dutch and English ancestry, lived her entire life involved in
 education.  Her early years were filled with her own education, 
beginning in Ionia, then Kansas Wesleyan University, for a Bachelor of 
Arts degree in Music, and graduate work at Kansas University and Kansas 
State University.  Continuing education to maintain her teaching 
certification was acquired at several additional institutions of higher 
learning across Kansas.  All of the education and training was to obtain
 and maintain her certificate as a teacher in the school systems of 
Kansas.  As a primary and secondary education teacher she taught in 
Ionia, Mankato, Manhattan, Lebanon, Esbon, and Burr Oak. 

 An early 
adopter of “distance teaching” technology, she provided essential Spanish
 language classes to several school systems in the area.  She was a 
teacher for many years in a formal sense, but her life was teaching, 
sometimes in a classroom, but always as an unending lifestyle – Wanda 
simply could NOT not teach:  family, 4-H, Extension classes, private 
music lessons for piano, organ and voice, cooking, sewing, photography, 
girls basketball . . . and the list goes on.  Anyone from 2 to 92, 
learned from her throughout her life.  She taught throughout her life, 
through the life she lived.

Her Christian faith was a

and joy filled life Wanda passed from this world to the next on October

 is survived by her husband of 56 years, Ted Thummel and their family 
James Allen, and his wife Sabrina, McLouth, Regina Marie, Topeka, 
Jonathan Peter and his wife Karen, Topeka and Joel Christopher, Salina. 
 Roxangela Elaine, a daughter died at birth. Surviving from a previous 
marriage, a son Olaf Carl “Trey” Anderson and his wife Carol, Great 
Bend. There are now 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.Wanda was also preceded in death by her parents, an older brother Robert Laverne and her first husband, Olaf Carl Anderson.Wanda,
 of Irish, Dutch and English ancestry, lived her entire life involved in
 education. Her early years were filled with her own education, 
beginning in Ionia, then Kansas Wesleyan University, for a Bachelor of 
Arts degree in Music, and graduate work at Kansas University and Kansas 
State University. Continuing education to maintain her teaching 
certification was acquired at several additional institutions of higher 
learning across Kansas. All of the education and training was to obtain
 and maintain her certificate as a teacher in the school systems of 
Kansas. As a primary and secondary education teacher she taught in 
Ionia, Mankato, Manhattan, Lebanon, Esbon, and Burr Oak. An early 
adopter of “distance teaching” technology, she provided essential Spanish
 language classes to several school systems in the area. She was a 
teacher for many years in a formal sense, but her life was teaching, 
sometimes in a classroom, but always as an unending lifestyle – Wanda 
simply could NOT not teach: family, 4-H, Extension classes, private 
music lessons for piano, organ and voice, cooking, sewing, photography, 
girls basketball . . . and the list goes on. Anyone from 2 to 92, 
learned from her throughout her life. She taught throughout her life, 
through the life she lived.Her Christian faith was a 
vital part of her life throughout the years – and there again she was a

LaVerna Marie (Braun) Younger, 90, left
 this life on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, at Locust Grove Village, 
La Crosse, Kansas, surrounded by her family.&nbsp;

LaVerna was born on March 6, 1932, in 
Hays, Kansas, to Frank J. and Helen (Brungardt) Braun.&nbsp; She was the 
second of five children raised on the Braun Dairy Farm north of Hays.&nbsp; 
One of her childhood chores was milking dairy cows before school.&nbsp; She 
often blamed her arthritic fingers on her milking cows, but she was 
especially proud of how hard her parents and her siblings worked on the 
family farm.

LaVerna attended Hays schools and 
graduated from Girls Catholic High School in 1950.&nbsp; She was employed at 
Spiess Bookkeeping Service until she married the love of her life, 
Bernard A. Younger on June 10, 1952.&nbsp; He was one of twelve children of 
Jacob and Catherine Younger, and at the time of their marriage, he was a
 member of the Signal Corps of the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort 
Polk, Louisiana.&nbsp; After serving his duty and being honorably discharged,
 Bernie and LaVerna returned to Hays in February 1953.&nbsp;

Together they owned and operated the 
Jobbership for Sunray DX Oil Co. in Hays and Russell and later started 
their own business, Younger Propane.&nbsp; She was the bookkeeper for several
 other jointly owned family businesses throughout the years including 
Younger Party Mix, BA Younger Oil, and various rental properties.

LaVerna and Bernie built their home on 
Toulon Road in 1955 and resided there throughout their 50-year 
marriage.&nbsp;&nbsp; They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary with their 
family shortly before Bernie’s passing on October 20, 2002.&nbsp; Mom spent 
the 20 years after his death missing him and continuing to love and 
honor his memory.&nbsp; She spread the love they shared with her children, 
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.&nbsp; Her home was meticulous and her 
flower gardens flourished.&nbsp; Many of her friends and family wear winter 
scarves that she knitted and many of her needlepoint pictures and 
embroidered tea-towels are displayed in her children’s homes.&nbsp; LaVerna 
instilled her love of reading in her children and grandchildren.&nbsp; She 
enjoyed word search, praying her rosary, and playing Bingo, Chinese 
checkers, and pinochle.&nbsp;

LaVerna is survived by her children:&nbsp; 
Janet (Mike) McCann, Rock Springs, WY; James (Sue) Younger, Hays, KS; 
Jolene (Ken) Windholz, Hays, KS; Jeff (Karie) Younger, Olathe, KS; Joan 
(William) Steinkuhler, Battlement Mesa, CO; and Jean Younger (Scott 
Dold) Lawrence, KS.

grandchildren:&nbsp; Nicole (Brian) Nelson; Erin (Todd) Graham; Bridget 
(Kobe) Burraston; Adrianna Smith; Michael (Kelsi) Younger; Megan (Craig)
 Mason; Mason (Maddie) Younger; Ben (Joan) Karst; Mark (Nikki) Karst; 
Jon Karst; Clayton (Janae Levier) Karst; Kyle (Kendra) Younger; Emily 
Younger; Alexa (Chad Turek) Steinkuhler; Kennedy Dold and Crosby Dold.

While greatly enjoying the love of her 
grandchildren, LaVerna was able to meet her 23 great-grandchildren:&nbsp; 
Tyler and Hollie Nelson; Alex Graham; Syree, Bernie and Carter 
Burraston; Mallory Fallas; Jacob, Parker, Blake and Grayson Younger; 
Joslyn, Lexi and Trevor Mason; Katrina and Kailey Delimont; Hendrix and 
Jaxon Karst; Cadence and Lyric Karst; and Ava, Owen and Elsie Younger.

LaVerna is also survived by her sister:
 Helen Werth and sisters-in law: Jeanette Younger, Det Younger, Ethel 
Younger, Nadine Pederson, Mary Jo Braun, Jacky Braun, and Jan Braun.

LaVerna was preceded in death by her 
parents Frank and Helen Braun, her husband and her three brothers 
Marvin, Frankie and Robert Braun.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Monday, October 10, 2022, at Immaculate Heart of Mary 
Catholic Church with Fr. John Schmeidler officiating.&nbsp; Burial will 
follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 
8:00 on Sunday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Monday, all at Hays 
Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.&nbsp; To honor LaVerna’s longtime membership 
with the Daughters of Isabella, current members will pray a rosary at 
5:30 pm followed by a vigil service at 6:30, all on Sunday at the

Mitchell Ryan Nollette, 50, of Monument, KS, died Tuesday, October 4, 
2022. He was born October 4, 1972, in Oakley, KS, to Michael and 
Lorraine (Close) Nollette. 

Mitch accepted Jesus as his savior at the age
 of 12 and was baptized. He graduated from Oakley High School in 1991 
and went on to Garden City Community College where he received his 
Criminal Justice Associate's Degree. Mitch then earned his bachelor’s 
degree at Friends University in Wichita. In 1996, he joined the Kansas 
Highway Patrol and served with them for over 20 years. Mitch was also a 
big part of the family farm operation. He was a good son and father. He 
had many friends and enjoyed spending time with them so much. 
Mitch is survived by his son Preston Nollette; parents, Michael and 
Lorraine Nollette; brother Brandon (Amy) Nollette; nephew Brody Nollette
 and many loving uncles, aunts and cousins. 
Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m. Sunday, October 9, 2022, at Baalmann Mortuary,
 Oakley. Funeral Service is 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 10, 2022, at the 
United Christian Church, Oakley with Pastor Bob Kelly officiating.

Donald Wayne Schlegel, 73, died October 4, 2022, at his home in Otis,
 Kansas.&nbsp; He was born November 9, 1948, in Great Bend, Kansas, the son 
of Samuel and Margaret (Lebsack) Schlegel. Don served in the United 
States Army, stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War.

A lifetime resident of Otis, Don was a farmer and a truck driver. He 
worked for H &amp; K Trucking, Westcott Trucking and Old Dominion 
Freight Line.

On December 14, 1983, he married Donna L. Moore-Evans in Otis, Kansas. She preceded him in death on January 4, 2009.

He is survived by his mother, Margaret Schlegel; and a sister, Connie
 Galusha, both of Otis; three stepsons; Gerald Evans and wife Brenda of 
Naperville, Indiana, David Evans of New Creek, West Virginia, and Steven
 Evans and wife Deanna of Scherr, West Virginia; and six grandchildren, 
Justin and Cody Evans, Luke and Louise Evans, Deprise Evans-Hawk and 
husband Logan, and Desire-e Evans.

He was preceded in death by his father and a nephew, David Galusha.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday and Friday at the funeral home.

Donald Wayne Schlegel

Clara Mae (Wright) Riffel of Stockton, KS, passed away on October 3, 2022, at the Solomon Valley Manor in Stockton at the age of 91. She was born on June 10, 1931, to Irvin Day and Lula (Jennings) Wright in Pittsfield, MA. She was married to Donald Eugene Riffel on&nbsp;October 26, 1952, in Stockton.&nbsp;They were blessed with three sons: Larry, Steve, and Randy.

Clara grew up in Stockton and graduated from Stockton High School with the Class of 1949. She attended Kansas State University for two years.&nbsp;A woman of many talents,&nbsp;Clara&nbsp;raised three boys,&nbsp;ran a sewing and farm business out of her basement making cheerleader uniforms and many dresses for ladies around the area, tended to her huge&nbsp;garden,&nbsp;raised chickens, and even&nbsp;helped&nbsp;design and build their house in town&nbsp;so she&nbsp;could better&nbsp;entertain and cook for&nbsp;her&nbsp;family and hired men.&nbsp;She was&nbsp;a&nbsp;member of the Kansas&nbsp;Master Farmer&nbsp;Association and&nbsp;Homemakers Guild, awarded from&nbsp;the K-State&nbsp;Cooperative&nbsp;Extension&nbsp;Service.&nbsp;She was also a member of the United Methodist Church, P.E.O., Bridge Club, an FFA helper, and 4-H leader for many years. She and Donald enjoyed traveling and made&nbsp;a visit to every National Park in the U.S., as well as trips to Europe, Venezuela, and Hawaii to name a few.&nbsp;

Clara is survived by her sons, Larry (Kerry) Riffel of Overland Park, KS, Steve (Michelle Wieden) Riffel and Randy (Debby) Riffel&nbsp;-&nbsp;both of Stockton; 7 grandchildren, Chris (Sarah) Riffel, Kim (J.) Leary, David (Sonya) Riffel, Katie (Jason) Lindsey, J.D (Ginger) Riffel, Daniel (Amanda) Riffel, and Donny Riffel; and 10 great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald; and sister, Barbara Gartrell.&nbsp;

<a></a>It isn’t the farm that makes the farmer’s wife; it’s the love, hard work, dedication, faith, and character. Clara was all these things and more. She set for us an example and passed on to us the values of hard work, noble character, and devout love for God, family, friends and neighbors.&nbsp;She will be greatly missed by all who knew her, but the celebration of her life and memories will never be forgotten.

She attended Kansas State University for two years.&nbsp;A woman of many talents,&nbsp;Clara&nbsp;raised three boys,&nbsp;ran a sewing and farm business out of her basement making cheerleader uniforms and many dresses for ladies around the area, tended to her huge&nbsp;garden,&nbsp;raised chickens, and even&nbsp;helped&nbsp;design and build their house in town&nbsp;so she&nbsp;could better&nbsp;entertain and cook for&nbsp;her&nbsp;family and hired men.&nbsp;She was&nbsp;a&nbsp;member of the Kansas&nbsp;Master Farmer&nbsp;Association and&nbsp;Homemakers Guild, awarded from&nbsp;the K-State&nbsp;Cooperative&nbsp;Extension&nbsp;Service.&nbsp;She was also a member of the United Methodist Church, P.E.O., Bridge Club, an FFA helper, and 4-H leader for many years. She and Donald enjoyed traveling and made&nbsp;a visit to every National Park in the U.S., as well as trips to Europe, Venezuela, and Hawaii to name a few.&nbsp;Clara is survived by her sons, Larry (Kerry) Riffel of Overland Park, KS, Steve (Michelle Wieden) Riffel and Randy (Debby) Riffel&nbsp;-&nbsp;both of Stockton; 7 grandchildren, Chris (Sarah) Riffel, Kim (J.) Leary, David (Sonya) Riffel, Katie (Jason) Lindsey, J.D (Ginger) Riffel, Daniel (Amanda) Riffel, and Donny Riffel; and 10 great-grandchildren.&nbsp;She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald; and sister, Barbara Gartrell.&nbsp;<a></a>It isn’t the farm that makes the farmer’s wife; it’s the love, hard work, dedication, faith, and character. Clara was all these things and more. Clara Mae (Wright) Riffel

With deepest sorrow, we announce that Cole Darran Rodenbeek,
 age 39, our beloved father, son, brother, fiance, family member and 
friend passed away on Saturday, October 1st, 2022, in a car accident.&nbsp; 
Cole made his grand entrance into the world on December 25th, 1982.&nbsp; He 
was known to say that he wanted to make sure everyone remembered his 
birthday.

Cole grew up in Salina, but spent time living in Reno, NV and Denver,
 CO amassing friends from across the country.&nbsp; In 2010, he married 
Kyrsten (Beckmann) and they had two beautiful children, Payge and 
Marley, who were and are the lights of their lives. &nbsp;

You can't explain Cole, you have to experience Cole. This quote, by 
one of his friends, perfectly sums up the man. He lived and loved large.
 In 2020, he and fiance Meredith Frazier moved to Lawrence and bought a 
home in the country.&nbsp; They quickly turned that home into a farm fully 
stocked with goats, chickens, dogs, cats, children, and lots of love and
 laughter.&nbsp; There was always a friend or two, or twenty stopping by, and
 Cole welcomed them all. His most enduring gift was his ability to spin a
 yarn.&nbsp; He could stretch an ordinary tale into a two hour narrative full
 of truths, but mostly half truths. Cole loved to wow people and make 
them laugh. What Cole loved most of all was to be surrounded by his 
children. His proudest moments involved Payge and Marley.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Cole is predeceased by grandparents William and Evelyn Cole of 
Salina; Betty Rodenbeek, of Salina;&nbsp; great grandparents, Nathan and 
Dorothy Butcher of Salina; and Edward and Ruby Rodenbeek, of Scott City.

Cole will be missed everyday by his fiance, Meredith Frazier and her 
two children, Jack and Kincaid of the home; his son, Payge Rodenbeek, of
 Bennington; his daughter, Marley Rodenbeek, of Bennington;&nbsp; his mother,
 Barbara Nitz and stepfather Rod, of Lawrence; fathers Michael 
Rodenbeek, of Salina; Paul Lowe and wife Terry, of Reno, NV; 
grandfather, Jim Rodenbeek, of Scott City;&nbsp; brothers Noah Rodenbeek and 
wife Renee,&nbsp; of Lawrence; Benton Bates and wife Amanda, of Denver;

Cole loved and was loved by his many nieces and nephews.

Cole Darran Rodenbeek

Jo was born on a farm near Hoxie, Kansas on December 13, 1927, to 
Mathias and Elizabeth (Reinert) Schuetz, the seventh of eight children. 
 She graduated from Sheridan County High school and went on to attend 
beauty school in Salina, Kansas. After graduating from beauty school, Jo
 and her sister Henrietta operated a beauty shop in Clay Center, Ks for a
 few years. 
 Jo married Sylvester (Sal) Goscha on April 18, 1949, in Seguin, Ks. 
They lived in Clay Center before moving to Garden City in 1950. Sal 
died in 2008. 
She is survived by their children: Larry (Sarah), Salina, Ks; Bob, 
Garden City, Ks; Diana Johnson, Amarillo, Tx.; Jolene Buxman (Dale), 
McPherson, Ks; and Nancy, New Braunfels, Tx. Sal and Jo were blessed 
with six grandchildren; Josh Tweedy, Lucas, Ks; Adam Johnson, Amarillo, 
Tx; Laura Gerber, Amarillo, Tx; Marc Buxman, Olathe, Ks; Emily Spohn, 
Lindsborg, Ks; and Amy McWilliams, Burden, Ks. She had eleven 
great-grandchildren, Emma, Meyah, Madison, Lily, Ty, Kolt, Avery, Macy, 
Abby, Whit and Hadley. She is also survived by numerous nieces and 
nephews. 
She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings: Ray Schuetz, 
Bernard Schuetz, Robert Schuetz, Isabel Peltier, Paula Perkins, 
Henrietta LaBarge and Asella Lindstrom. She was also preceded by her 
son-in-law Jerry Johnson. 
Jo loved spending time with her family and friends. From time to time, 
Jo enjoyed the challenge of winning at the slot machines in Nevada. She
 also enjoyed walking with her weekly walking group, followed by coffee 
and a cinnamon roll. She volunteered for many years at Finney County 
Senior Center. She was a member of St Dominic Catholic Church, Daughters
 of Isabella, and Altar Society. 
A Vigil Service and Rosary will be held at 7:00 pm on Friday, October 7,
 2022, at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City, Kansas. Funeral Mass 
will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, October 8, 2022, at St. Dominic 
Catholic Church in Garden City with Rev. Warren Stecklein as Celebrant. 
 Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Friends may
 call from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Friday at Garnand Funeral Home in 
Garden City and the family will be at the funeral home from 5:00 pm to 
7:00 pm to visit with friends.

Josephine A. 'Jo' Goscha (Schuetz)

Former Phillips County resident James M. Smith passed away at his 
home in Littleton, Colorado, on Tuesday, September 27, 2022, at the age of
 74.

He was born June 14, 1948, in Holdrege, NE the son of Wayne and Luella
 (Russell) Smith. &nbsp;He was a Phillipsburg High School graduate and served
 in the United States Army.

James is survived by his two sons: Jamie Smith of Salina, Kansas and 
Chris Woerpel of Thornton, CO; brother Russell Smith of Phillipsburg; 
sisters: Marlene Peters and husband Forrest of Phillipsburg, Jeanne 
Gantz of Beloit, Mary Lasiter and husband Jim of Blairsburg, IA, and 
Linda Schurz of Phillipsburg; 8 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; and 
numerous nieces and nephews.

Cremation is planned.&nbsp; A memorial service will be at a later date.

Robert was born on November 15, 1931, in Red Cloud, NE to Charles E. 
Hildreth, of Wray, CO and Ruth Pauline Harris Hildreth, of Salina, KS.

Bob's father passed away when he was only two months-old.&nbsp; After the 
passing of his father, Bob’s mother along with his four year-old brother
 moved to Fort Morgan, CO, where his mother married Ray Johnson.&nbsp; His 
step dad worked for the railroad and the family with 10 children lived 
in two box cars that had been set across the road from the railroad 
tracks, and heated with coal stoves.

Bob joined the Navy in 1951, and was in the Seabees until February of
 1955.&nbsp; He was a member of the Seabees Construction Battalion, serving 
in French Morocco, North Africa, where he was an electrician.

Upon Bob's honorable discharge from the Navy, he moved to Denver, CO,
 where he met his Marita Orle at the Assembly of God Church. They were 
married on December 7, 1958.

Bob was a devout born-again believer in Jesus Christ and never hesitated to share his testimony and belief in God with others.&nbsp;

Bob was a business man and invested in residential and commercial real estate throughout Colorado and Kansas.

Bob and Marita were married for 53 years and welcomed two children, 
Lynette Penny (Gary) of Burlington, CO and Karl Hildreth (Holly) of 
Tulsa, OK.&nbsp; Bob will be deeply missed by his children and their spouses 
along with his 7 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren: Kyle Gateley 
of Rochester, NY (Jude 7) Brittany Bodley (Tim) of Claremore, OK&nbsp; (Ella 
14, Kaleb 12, Lyla 9, Kamden 7 &amp; Charlotte 9mo) Kameron Gateley 
(Beth) of Timnath, CO (Lyla 2 &amp; Weston 1 mo.) Kollin Gateley 
(Amanda) of Englewood, CO (Elise 3 &amp; baby due October 2022) Brielle

Bob and Marita built their lifetime legacy, a Cabin in Grand Lake,

Bob is proceeded in death by his parents, a brother Chuck Hildreth, 
sisters June Doris, Retha Holmes &amp; Maxine Lecrone, and step siblings
 Viola, Lorraine, Gerald, Robert and Illa.

Because of Bob’s faith,&nbsp;he reunited with the love of his life Marita 
in heaven on October 2, 2022, leaving a true legacy behind for his 
loving family and numerous friends.
