Jerold “Jerry” Wayne Briney, 86, Hays, died Friday, September 2, 2022, at his home.

He was born April 22, 1936, in Cullison,
 Kansas, the son of Wayne E. “Salty” and Nellie V. (Rice) Briney.&nbsp; Jerry 
graduated from Cullison High School in 1954 then continued his 
education, graduating from Pratt Junior College and Fort Hays State 
University.&nbsp; After college, he served in the U.S. Army.&nbsp; For 25 years, 
Jerry worked as an insurance adjuster.&nbsp; He married Ruth E. Jones on 
August 18, 1957, in Dodge City, and they celebrated 65 years of 
marriage.&nbsp; He was lifetime member of the FHSU Alumni Association and a 
40-year member of the Elks Club.&nbsp; He was an Elvis fan, enjoyed classic 
country music, and his hobbies included coin collecting, hunting, and 
fishing.

Survivors include his wife Ruth of 
Hays, a son: Gary Briney of Hays, two daughters: Lori Briney Swift of 
Niceville, FL and Cheryl Kinderknecht and husband Gilbert of Ellis, a 
granddaughter: Jennifer Bruggeman and husband Tate of Clay Center, and 
his first great grandchild due in December.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother: Frank H. Briney.

To celebrate Jerry’s life, his family 
will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 7:00 on Wednesday, September 7, 
2022, at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.&nbsp; Inurnment will be at a later

Mary Lou Smith, 96, passed away Friday, September 2, 2022, at Country Living in Larned.

She was born November 7, 1925, to Walter B and Maud Romig Rumsey.

On December 1, 1944, she married Virgil John Smith. Virgil died May 27, 1977.

Mary Lou was a lifelong area resident, a farm wife and homemaker. She
 was an elder and active member of the Presbyterian Church, PEO Chapter 
CB, and a Santa Fe Trail Museum Board Member. She was a good cook and 
enjoyed horseback riding and painting.

Mary Lou is survived by: a son, Richard Vance (Susan) Smith, Larned; 
six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mary 
Rumsey, Wisconsin, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; two brothers;
 Walter Rumsey and Reed Rumsey; and her son; John David Smith.

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 9, 2022, at the 
First Presbyterian Church, Larned, with Pastor Bill Stapleton presiding.

Mary Lou Smith

Marlys Joan Bernard, 82, of Hutchinson, died on August 31, 2022, at 
Hospice House. She was born October 7, 1939, in Little River, to Glenn 
and Marjorie (Clarke) Stowe.

Marlys moved to Hutchinson in 1958 and graduated from Adela Hale 
Business College. Her first job was with the county attorney’s office in
 Hutchinson as a legal secretary. Marlys the worked for Dick Rome and 
Time Chambers in their private practices. She went back to work in the 
county / district attorney’s office in 1984, as its first full-time 
diversion coordinator. Marlys was a member of the Kansas Victims 
Assistance Association and the board of directors for Sexual Assault and
 Domestic Violence Center of Hutchinson, serving as secretary, 
treasurer, and president. She retired as victim-witness coordinator for 
the Reno County district attorney’s office in 2007, after 23 years.

Marlys was a caring friend. She always sent cards for birthdays, 
anniversaries, and special occasions. She was also famous for being the 
“Cookie Queen” of Reno County. Marlys baked cookies for everyone that 
she loved. Those cards and cookies will be missed.

In 1999, Marlys received an award from the Kansas Coalition Against 
Sexual &amp; Domestic Violence and the Sexual Assault &amp; Domestic 
Violence Center of Hutchinson as a “Mother of Our Movement”, in 
recognition of contributions made to lay groundwork for advocates, 
victims, and survivors. She received the Liberty Bell Award from the 
Reno County Bar Association in 2000, in recognition of her contribution 
to the legal profession in Reno County.

Marlys is survived by: her husband of 51 years, Jewell R. Bernard; 
daughters, Debra J. Gardner (Greg), Kristi L. Bernard; son, Jewell R. 
Bernard; sister-in-law, Freddean Stowe; son-in-law, Charles Weible; 
niece, Krista Smalley; grandchildren, Grant Gardener (Megan), Brittany 
Gardner, Sierra Gardner, Erika Sutton (Mike), Brandon Bernard (Meagan), 
Aimee Bernard, Arrin Bernard (Molly); and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her father, Glenn Stowe; mother, Marjorie Stowe; brother, Max Stowe; and daughter, Linda Weible.

Celebration of life will be 10 am Thursday, September 8, 2022, at 
First Congregational Church, Little River. Burial will follow in Bean 
Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 am to 8 pm Wednesday, with family 
present from 5 to 7 pm at Elliott Mortuary.

R. Jolene Cook, 80, passed away September 1, 2022, at Hospice House, 
Hutchinson. She was born December 22, 1941, in Sterling, KS, to Carl 
Thomas and Rosetta Emmegene (Hunt) Mitzner.

On July 7, 1961, Jolene married Weldon A. Cook, in South Hutchinson.&nbsp;
 They shared over 60 years of marriage, prior to his passing on March 
28, 2022.

Jolene owned the restaurant AT&amp;O in South Hutchinson, for many 
years.&nbsp; In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, floral arranging, and 
could fix just about anything.&nbsp; Jolene had an amazingly creative and 
artistic mind.&nbsp; Some of her favorite things were black coffee, crossword
 puzzles, and vanilla ice cream.&nbsp; Jolene dedicated many years to 
researching her family history and was a former member of the Reno 
County Genealogical Society.

Jolene is survived by:&nbsp; her children, Troy (Susan) Cook of Nickerson,
 Tami Cook of South Hutchinson, Thom (Sharon) Etzler of Hutchinson; 
grandchildren, Heather "Tweed" (Jesse) Cartwright of Hutchinson, Tyler 
"Goose" (Hannah) Cook of Nickerson, and Ryder Cook of Hays; 
great-grandchildren, Max Elam, Lucy Elam, Emily Cook, Camden Hummel, and
 Willow Hummel; sisters, Twila Blew and Janice Runyon; brothers, Steve

Jeffrey John Riedesel, age 53, of Goodland, Kansas, passed away 
Tuesday, August&nbsp;30, 2022, at the Goodland Regional Medical Center in 
Goodland.

He was born in San Bernardino, California, October 12, 1968.

Jeff and his parents moved to Lakewood, Colorado, in March 1970. Jeff graduated&nbsp;from Alameda High School in 1987.

Jeff always had a passion as well as a talent for engineering and 
designing which&nbsp;was evident in his model creations and his street rod. 
Along with his beloved&nbsp;Grandpa and his dad, Jeff built his 1929 Model A 
Ford street rod that he named&nbsp;Toy A. And like his Grandpa, Jeff earned 
many awards for his craftsmanship and&nbsp;drag racing.

After marrying Susan Cooper on October 21, 2001, Jeff, Susan, along 
with son&nbsp;Corey and daughter Grace eventually moved to Goodland, Kansas, 
where Jeff&nbsp;pursued his Law Enforcement career. He was proud to have 
served the Sherman&nbsp;County Sheriff’s Office and the Goodland Police 
Department. At the time of his&nbsp;passing, Jeff was the Undersheriff of the
 Sherman County Sheriff’s Office.

Jeff is survived by his wife Susan, son Corey, (Monique and 
granddaughter&nbsp;Elizabeth), daughter Grace, parents Dallas and Janet Ann 
Wise Riedesel, his&nbsp;sister Tiffany Riedesel Romero (Mark), and a niece 
DallasAnn Romero.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Beulah 
Riedesel of Kirk,&nbsp;CO and Lawrence and Mabel Wise of Winchester, KY.

Marvin J. Kaiser

Alma M. (Zogg) Golden, 99, Grainfield, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, 
August 30, 2022, at Gove County Medical Center Long Term Care, Quinter, 
Kansas.

Alma was born May 23, 1923, in Tripp, South Dakota, the daughter of 
Reverend and Mrs. Ulrich (Herbster) Zogg.&nbsp; She was baptized by her 
father, and later, confirmed in the German language.

She graduated from Scotland High School, Scotland, South Dakota, and 
Midland Lutheran College, Fremont, Nebraska.&nbsp; She continued her 
education at the University Of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas, Kansas State 
University, Manhattan, Kansas, Fort Hays Kansas State College, Hays, 
Kansas, and studied as a Fulbright Scholar in Germany.

On June 15, 1948, she married Dr. B. L. Golden.&nbsp; He preceded her in 
death in 1978.&nbsp; To this union were born two children, Dr. Steven Golden,
 and Marcia (Golden) Roemer.

Many years of Alma’s life were spent in teaching music and German.&nbsp; 
During these years, she tried to impress upon her students the 
importance of excellence, rather than being satisfied with mediocrity.&nbsp; 
She was a dedicated teacher, always giving extra time outside of school 
to help her students.

After retiring from full time teaching, Alma spent many years 
substituting in the classrooms, encouraging students to be respectful, 
honest, and diligent.

For 15 years, Alma directed the church choir and numerous community cantatas.

Alma continued to maintain an interest in the community and for many 
years actively served on the boards of the Gove County Medical Center 
Endowment, Quinter, Kansas, and Western Plains Arts’ Association, Colby,
 Kansas.

One of her greatest pleasures was co-directing summer Broadway 
musicals for the Prairie Community Theatre, Quinter, Kansas, with Carole
 Crist.&nbsp; Her entire adult life was in the performing arts, either 
teaching or directing.

She leaves to mourn her, her children, Dr. Steven Golden (Peggy), 
Oakley, Kansas, and Marcia (Golden) Roemer (Dennis, rural Gove, Kansas; 
four grandchildren, Rayna (Roemer) Kopriva, rural Gove, Kansas, Tessa 
Henry (Dustin), rural Gove, Kansas; Greg Golden (Mandy), Westminster, 
Colorado, Alisa Baden (Nick), Wichita, Kansas; six great grandchildren, 
Alexah Kopriva, Elise Henry, Christian Golden, Emily Golden, Zoey Baden,
 and Alex Baden; one brother, Dick Zogg, Kennebunk, Maine; and many 
greatly loved&nbsp; nephews, nieces, former students and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; five brothers,
 Rick Zogg, Matt Zogg, Alfred Zogg, Andy Zogg, and Walt Zogg; and three 
sisters, Agatha Zogg, Margaret Ackerman, and Mildred “Mickey” Blaser.

Per Alma’s wishes, cremation has been chosen.

Memorial service will be Saturday, September 10, 2022, at 10:30 A.M. 
at the United Christian Church, Oakley, Kansas, with Pastor Bob Kelly 
and Pastor Paul Woodall officiating.&nbsp; A private family inurnment will be
 held at the Grainfield Cemetery, Grainfield, Kansas, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests memorials to Gove 
County Medical Center Endowment Fund, Quinter, Kansas, Gove County

During these years, she tried to impress upon her students the

Alma M. (Zogg) Golden

How do you sum up the life of someone who would pick you up from school in a red Mustang, red lipstick, and dressed like Jackie O., who lived in a small farming community but showed up to work in heels ...?

Jeanette was the epitome of class and grace and taught those around her to hold their heads high and was a mother and grandmother to all. She toggled party lines but was always thoughtful and decisive in her decisions. She was the first and leading feminist in her family and did so with grit and determination. While these words will not do her justice, we hope she approves.

Jeanette Vaught Gibson, 86, of Alma, left this earth on August 31, 2022. She was born December 27, 1935, in Anadarko, OK to Bud and Pearl Vaught, along with her twin sister&nbsp;Jeanelle. She was lucky enough to live through her twinship in the embryo. She was the youngest of five children.

She was the mother to Rise Diane, Kathleen Roxanne, Terry Lee, and William Buck, and stepmother to Debra Kaye, Rick Dean, and Rondal Scott. They moved to WaKeeney, KS in December 1969, and she was a schoolteacher there for 35 years. She loved golfing, playing gin and bridge with friends, and gardening. She enjoyed traveling across the United States to visit her sisters. Some of their most enjoyable years were spent having barbecues poolside with friends and family.

In 2008 Jeanette and Harold retired full-time to Lake Wabaunsee where they made numerous friends.

She continued to golf, spend time with her friends and family, tended her garden and rose bushes, and fully enjoyed a well-deserved retirement. In her free time, she also loved painting and writing.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Bernard, her sisters Barbara and&nbsp;LaVerne, the love of her life, Harold, her beautiful daughters Kathleen and Debbie, and her son Scott.

She is survived by her daughter Rise, her sons Terry (Dona), William, and Rick (Kandi), 11 Grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and her handsome, tuxedo-wearing cat, Jack.

She will be sorely missed by all who knew her, and her legacy will live on through them.

A celebration of life will be held&nbsp;at a later date. August 22, at the age of 82.&nbsp; She went by her middle name Lynne, and was 
born on September 25, 1939, in Houston, Texas, to Lillian &amp; Leo Von 
Lintel. Lynne was very loyal and devoted to her family. &nbsp;She was a
 very active person.&nbsp; In her earlier years, she liked to bowl frequently
 in leagues.&nbsp; She loved all kinds of card games and was an avid bridge 
player, at times going to play in competitions.&nbsp; Lynne was a prolific 
painter, in particular watercolor, having painted dozens of pictures.&nbsp; 
Travel was a joy of hers as well, having traveled to numerous locations 
while her first husband, Ken Anderson, was in the Navy.&nbsp; She very much 
enjoyed going on cruises as well. Lynne is survived by her 
mother, Lillian Von Lintel.&nbsp; Her father, Leo Von Lintel, preceded her in
 passing.&nbsp; She is also survived by her brother Lon, and his wife Maria.&nbsp;
 Lon’s son Chris, preceded Lynne in passing. &nbsp;Her sister Lauren Heskett,

Gary Richard Bilbrey, 78, of Russell, Kansas, died on Wednesday, 
August 31, 2022, at the Wheat State Manor of Whitewater, Kansas.

Gary was born on June 7, 1944, in Stafford, Kansas, the son of Fern 
R. and Mildred L. (Morelan) Bilbrey. &nbsp;He grew up in Russell, Kansas and 
graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1962.&nbsp; He met, fell 
in love and was united in marriage to Orma Eloise Jones on August 16, 
1963, at Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, California.&nbsp; From this union, Gary 
and Orma were blessed with two sons Gary and Tim.&nbsp; He served his country
 by joining the Marine Corps and fighting in the Vietnam War for 4 ½ 
years.&nbsp; After returning back home from the war, Gary worked for 29 years
 with Continental Airlines as a customer service and freight worker.&nbsp; 
Later he worked for 10 years for the city of Russell as a water 
treatment plant operator.&nbsp; He was a life member of the Russell V.F.W. 
Post #6240 and enjoyed hunting and fishing.&nbsp; Most of all he enjoyed 
spending time with his family and close friends.

He is survived by his loving wife Orma of the home and sons Gary R. 
Bilbrey and wife Shelley of Bountiful, Utah and Tim A. Bilbrey and wife 
Clarissa of Russell, Kansas; 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.&nbsp; He
 was preceded in death by his parents, brother Kenneth Bilbrey and 
sister Patricia Loy.

A graveside service to celebrate Gary’s life will be held at 9:30

Susan Shupe, 78, died on Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at her home in Lane 
County. She was born on July 3, 1944, in Barton County the daughter of 
George Adam &amp; Christine Catherine (Stremel) Hejny. She married Boyd
 A. Shupe on June 1, 1963, at Olmitz. 
Susan grew up in rural Barton County and graduated from Hoisington High 
School in 1962. Shortly after her marriage she and her husband moved to
 Lane County. She worked many jobs in the area including a nurse aide, 
Calico Apron Café, Dighton Bowl and Prime Pork. She enjoyed embroidery,
 sewing, baking, growing flowers and house plants. She was a vendor at 
Farmer’s Markets where she sold products from her large garden, bee 
hives and eggs. 
Susan was a member of St Theresa Catholic Church in Dighton where she 
was very active in the Altar Society, serving many funeral dinners and 
was a former Regent in the Daughters Of Isabella and was a Religious 
Education Teacher. She was a 4-H Project Leader and was proud of being a
 blood donor of over 13 gallons. 
She is survived by her Husband- Boyd Shupe, 6 Daughters- Leona 
Kuntzelman of Puerto Morelos, Mexico, Malinda &amp; Shane Greene of 
Tomah, Wisconsin, Michelle Shupe of Dighton, Lisa &amp; Aaron Conine of 
Dighton, Melissa Shupe &amp; Steve Gormley of Grinnell and Janie &amp; 
Chris Howard of Ulysses, Son- Arden Shupe of Scott City, 3 Brothers- 
George &amp; Dixie Hejny of Great Bend, Don &amp; Roberta Hejny of La 
Mesa, California and Leonard Hejny of Gorham, 3 Sisters- Esther

 </figure>Susan Shupe, 78, died on Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at her home in Lane 
County. She was born on July 3, 1944, in Barton County the daughter of 
George Adam &amp; Christine Catherine (Stremel) Hejny. She married Boyd
 A. Shupe on June 1, 1963, at Olmitz. 
Susan grew up in rural Barton County and graduated from Hoisington High 
School in 1962. Shortly after her marriage she and her husband moved to
 Lane County. She worked many jobs in the area including a nurse aide, 
Calico Apron Café, Dighton Bowl and Prime Pork. She enjoyed embroidery,
 sewing, baking, growing flowers and house plants. She was a vendor at 
Farmer’s Markets where she sold products from her large garden, bee 
hives and eggs. 
Susan was a member of St Theresa Catholic Church in Dighton where she 
was very active in the Altar Society, serving many funeral dinners and 
was a former Regent in the Daughters Of Isabella and was a Religious 
Education Teacher. She was a 4-H Project Leader and was proud of being a
 blood donor of over 13 gallons. 
She is survived by her Husband- Boyd Shupe, 6 Daughters- Leona 
Kuntzelman of Puerto Morelos, Mexico, Malinda &amp; Shane Greene of 
Tomah, Wisconsin, Michelle Shupe of Dighton, Lisa &amp; Aaron Conine of 
Dighton, Melissa Shupe &amp; Steve Gormley of Grinnell and Janie &amp; 
Chris Howard of Ulysses, Son- Arden Shupe of Scott City, 3 Brothers- 
George &amp; Dixie Hejny of Great Bend, Don &amp; Roberta Hejny of La 
Mesa, California and Leonard Hejny of Gorham, 3 Sisters- Esther 
Tattershall of Fruita, Colorado, Alice &amp; Max Copple of Miltonvale 
and Helen &amp; Richard Ackerman of Concordia, Missouri, 18

Susan Shupe

Billie Margaret (Kathka) Bryan passed away on August 30, 2022, at 
Decatur County Hospital at the age of 97. She was born December 14, 
1924, to Paul and Ethel (Oswalt) Kathka in Oberlin, Kansas.

Billie
 graduated from DCHS in 1943. She was united in marriage to Dale Bryan 
on June 13, 1943, in Atwood, Kansas. They made their home on a farm in 
Rawlins County where they raised their four children. Billie &amp; Dale 
farmed until 1950. During the 1960s, they owned and operated the Vickers
 Station in Oberlin. She also worked at Ootons Drapery shop from 1968 to
 1972. She was an excellent seamstress and made a lot of her family’s 
clothing including her daughters’ wedding dresses and prom formals.

Survivors
 include her daughters: Elaine Leatherman of Hutchinson KS, Donna (Roy) 
Donner of McCook, NE; daughters-in-law: Leanna Bryan of Oberlin, KS and 
Connie (John) Simonsson Oberlin of KS; sister-in-law Betty (Milton) 
Slaybaugh of Tucson, AZ; 12 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, 
and great-great grandchildren.

Billie was preceded by in death by

Harold Allen Tubbs, 63, of Colby, died Wednesday, August 31, 2022, at 
Citizens Medical Center, Colby. He was born on August 15, 1959, to 
Robert and Caroline (Prokop) Tubbs at St. Thomas Hospital, in Colby. 

Allen, as he was known to his friends and family, grew up on a farm 
north of Levant and attended Brewster Schools before graduating from 
Colby High School. He moved to Ocala, Florida in the '80s and worked as a
 heavy equipment operator burying telecommunication lines. Allen moved 
back to Colby in the '90s but loved Florida and aways wanted to go back 
to visit. Upon his return to Colby, Allen took up plumbing. This became 
his main profession, but he was really a “jack of all trades," working 
for several different companies and on his own. Allen was a kind man, 
who would have done anything to help anyone. He especially loved his 
dogs. 
On August 24, 2018, Allen married Karen Lynn Adair and gained six stepchildren and ten step-grandchildren. 
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Harold and Elma 
Tubbs and Cyprian and Antoniette Prokop; sister Peggy Phillips and niece
 Sara Phillips. 
He is survived by his wife Karen; sister Kathy (Rick) Homan, of Grove, 
OK; brothers, Dennis (Robin) Tubbs, of Colby, KS and Justin (Angela) 
Tubbs, of Plainfield, IL; along with several nephews, nieces, great 
nieces and great nephews. 
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 9,

Harold Allen Tubbs

Dorothy Irene (Burnett) Martin, age 88, passed away on August 30, 
2022, at the Greeley County Long Term Care Unit in Tribune, Kansas. She 
was born on August 24, 1934, in Towner, Colorado, to Charlie and Mildred 
(Corr) Burnett.

Dorothy was a member of the Tribune community since 1948, having 
moved from Towner, Colorado. She was a member of the Tribune Assembly of
 God church and a devoted homemaker. She occupied her time with 
quilling, crafting, sewing, working on puzzles and filling in coloring 
books. She absolutely adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

On June 15, 1952, Dorothy married Lawrence Martin at the Assembly of 
God church in Tribune. They celebrated 60 years of marriage before he 
passed away on September 1, 2012.

Survivors include their children Peggy &amp; Larry Loop of Park City,
 Kansas, Greg &amp; Ruth Martin of Blue Rapids, Kansas, her grandsons 
Jeff Loop of Haven, Kansas, Daniel Loop of Haven, Kansas, Brent &amp; 
Megan Martin of Waterville, Kansas, Blake &amp; Tif Martin of 
Waterville, Kansas, her sister Lonnie Holmes of Tribune, Kansas, and ten
 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death her husband, her parents, her sisters Marie Butler, and Louise Myers.

Hospital in Dighton. She was born on February 3, 1921, in Lane County 
the daughter of Delmar &amp; Lena (Bobb) Durr. She married Max N. 
Stanley on November 4, 1939, at Dighton. He died on August 24, 2010,&nbsp; after 69 years of marriage. 
Ellen May was raised with the other “Durr Girls” on the family farm near
 Alamota and later raised her family in the same home. She graduated 
from Lane County High School and after raising her 6 children went back 
to school and earned her degrees from Garden City Community College and 
Fort Hays State University. She authored a number of books about Lane 
County history and wrote the 100 year news for the Dighton Herald for 
many years. 
She was a very active of the United Methodist Church and also belonged 
to the Lane County Historical Society. She was involved with the Kansas
 Democratic Party and worked tirelessly as a member of Kansans Against 
the Vietnam War. She served as the 1990 Kansas State Historical Society
 President. Her special interest was following her children’s education
 and sports activities and in later years following the Kansas City 
Royals. 
She is survived by 3 Daughters- Ann Epps of Denver, Colorado, Janet 
Horsky of Lansing and Gail &amp; Merv Peck of Freemont, Nebraska, Son- 
Neal &amp; Deanne Stanley of Dighton, Sister- Lee Speer of Wichita, 7

Jeffrey James “Jeff” Hertel, age 60, of Victoria, Kansas, died Tuesday, &nbsp;August 30, 2022, at his home.

He was born September 17, 1961, at Hays, Kansas, to Clarence and Rosemary (Maurath) Hertel.

He owned and operated Victoria City Motors Company and was the former 
owner of Victoria City Liquor.&nbsp; Jeff grew up in Victoria and was a 1979 
Graduate of Victoria High School.&nbsp; He was a member of The Basilica of 
St. Fidelis, the Munjor 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus Council No. 
11492, the Victoria 4th Degree Assembly Knights of Columbus, President 
of the Victoria Housing Authority, and a board member of the Cathedral 
of The Plains Charitable Fund, Inc.

Survivors include his daughter, Brittney Lorson and Chad Lorson, both of Hope, KS; his
 grandchildren, Brighton Paul Lorson; Brixton James Lorson; Bristol Ann 
Lorson; &nbsp;his special friend, Kimberly Smith, Walker, KS; his sisters,

Jeffrey James 'Jeff' Hertel

Sheryl
 Lynne (Allison) Smith, 71, of Buhler, Kansas, passed on August 28, 
2022. Sheryl was born on June 26, 1951, in Lyons, Kansas.&nbsp; She was first 
chair clarinet in the Pride of Lyons Marching Band and valedictorian of 
the graduating class of 1969.&nbsp; 

She followed her passions to Fort Hays 
State University where she marched with the Tiger Marching Band and 
majored in art education.&nbsp; Here she met a handsome economics major, Rick
 Smith.&nbsp; They met in art class when Rick claimed he needed help drawing 
some birds. Rick and Sheryl were married August 10, 1973.&nbsp; This union 
was blessed with three children: daughter Tara Goans and husband Lonnie

Sheryl
 began her teaching career at Eureka Jr. Sr. High School where she 
taught art for 7 years.&nbsp; The family moved in 1992 to Buhler, Kansas 
where Sheryl began teaching art for the elementary students at USD #313 
and later moved to Buhler High School where she finished her teaching 
career in 2015.&nbsp; She was called to teach again for 2 more years at 
Prairie Hills and loved teaching middle school, even in retirement.&nbsp; 
Sheryl was also an adjunct professor at Sterling College, helping out 
with their art education program.

In
 addition to the many lives she touched through her teaching career, 
Sheryl continued to bless others with her music.&nbsp; She played the 
organ/piano for the Christian and Congregational Church (Eureka), First 
United Methodist Church (Hutchinson), and Emanuel Lutheran Church 
(Hutchinson). She also accompanied many students with state vocal 
competitions as well as assisting her children and grandchildren with 
music lessons.

Sheryl
 was loved tremendously by her family, her students and friends.&nbsp; She 
was always the first to help those in need. From donating supplies to 
classrooms, offering home cooked meals, or just being a listening ear, 
Sheryl was always quick to uplift her friends and family both in person 
and on Facebook, where she loved catching up with just about everyone.&nbsp; 
She enjoyed creating art and planned and hosted summer art camps for 
children with the Buhler Recreation Department.&nbsp; She loved her soap 
opera, The Young and the Restless, reading, and just having her entire 
family together.&nbsp; She also loved her medical shows while sharing her 
expertise with her family who called often needing medical advice!&nbsp; Most
 importantly, she loved the Lord and was faithful all her years on this 
earth.&nbsp; She was always proud that as a child she won a special perfect 
attendance pin each year in Sunday school.&nbsp;

Sheryl
 is survived by her husband Rick Smith of Buhler, daughter Tara Lynne 
Goans (Lonnie), daughter Mindy Lea Fry (Andrew), son Brett Ryan Smith 
(Julie), grandchildren Colton, Allison and Ty Goans, Mason Fry and 
Bellatrix Smith, brother Craig Allison (Nancy) of Salina, and sister 
Chelle Cox (Rick) of Kansas City, MO and several nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Sheryl was preceded in death by her parents, Vincent and Bonnie (Crowl) Allison, and granddaughter Tayllor Paige Goans.&nbsp;

Funeral
 service will be 10 am Monday, September 5, 2022, at Emanuel Lutheran

Municipal Cemetery West. Friends may call from 1 to 8 pm Sunday, with 
the family present from 5 to 7 pm, at Elliott Mortuary.

 Lynne (Allison) Smith, 71, of Buhler, Kansas, passed on August 28, 
2022. Sheryl was born on June 26, 1951, in Lyons, Kansas.&nbsp; She was first 
chair clarinet in the Pride of Lyons Marching Band and valedictorian of 
the graduating class of 1969.&nbsp; She followed her passions to Fort Hays 
State University where she marched with the Tiger Marching Band and 
majored in art education.&nbsp; Here she met a handsome economics major, Rick
 Smith.&nbsp; They met in art class when Rick claimed he needed help drawing 
some birds. Rick and Sheryl were married August 10, 1973.&nbsp; This union 
was blessed with three children: daughter Tara Goans and husband Lonnie 
of Buhler, KS, daughter Mindy Fry and husband Andrew of Shawnee, KS, and
 son Brett Smith and wife Julie of Buhler, KS.Sheryl

Sheryl Lynne (Allison) Smith

Mary Anne Mull passed away on August 26, 2022.

She was born in Great Bend, Kan., to Lloyd and Margaret Merten on April
 2, 1929. She went to a one-room school near their farm by Heizer, Kan.,&nbsp; until moving to a farm west of Great Bend. Mary Anne graduated from 
Great Bend High School in 1947, then attended Lindenwood College and 
Barton County Community College.

In 1948, she married Carles L. Mull at First Congregational United 
Church. They lived on a farm north of Pawnee Rock, Kan., for twenty-one 
years before moving to Great Bend, Kan.

Mary Anne was a member of First Congregational United Church for 
seventy years, where she was a devoted volunteer. She was a farm wife 
and a homemaker. She worked part-time for Gibson Hallmark, and the Best 
Western Hotel. She volunteered at the Central Kansas Medical Center gift
 shop for many years. She moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., in 2015 to be
 near her daughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Mull; parents, Lloyd and Margaret Merten; one brother, and four sisters.

Mary Anne is survived by her daughter, Emily (Joe) Ferri of Colorado 
Springs, Colo.; two sons, Robert W. Mull of Seattle, Wash., and David L.
 (Sandy) Mull of Great Bend, Kan.; one grandson, Marcus Mull; two step 
grandsons, Mark and Justin Ferri; and four step great-grandchildren, 
Colin, Nora, Elizabeth and Ethan.

Mary Anne Mull

Leona JoAnn Boggs, 89, Hays, died Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at HaysMed, surrounded by family.

She was born May 12, 1933, in Norton County, Kansas, the daughter of William Henry and Nancy (Spencer) Roe. She was a 1951 graduate of&nbsp;Norcatur&nbsp;High School. On June 2, 1951, she was united in marriage to Lewis Dean Boggs in Norton, and they celebrated over 65 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on September 11, 2016. JoAnn was a member of Hays First United Methodist Church and the church quilting group. Her hobbies included gardening, crafting, and woodworking, and she was a wonderful cook, known for baking delicious bread and homemade rolls. Her family thought of her as a great teacher who passed her wisdom on to them.

Survivors include her three sons: Randolph “Randy” Boggs and wife Karen Dreiling of Hays, Barry Boggs and wife Patti of Kinsley, Steven Boggs and wife Kathy of Schoenchen, a daughter: Deanna&nbsp;Herrman&nbsp;and husband David of Hays, a brother:&nbsp;Jarrold&nbsp;Roe of Derby, two sisters: Phyllis LaSalle of Oberlin and Linda Henry of Atwood, five grandchildren: Trevor Boggs and wife&nbsp;LaRee, Derick Boggs and wife Diane, Randee Olive, Sara Branham&nbsp;and husband Carlos, and Lacy Boggs,&nbsp;ten&nbsp;great grandchildren: Austin Boggs and wife&nbsp;Chase, Andrew Boggs, Tristan Olive, Teixeira Olive, Braeden Boggs,&nbsp;Trexynn&nbsp;Olive,&nbsp;Kyndall&nbsp;Branham, Ellie Branham, Kinsley Boggs,&nbsp;and Jaelyn Sweet,&nbsp;and a great-great grandson:&nbsp;Kallen&nbsp;Tate Boggs.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dean, a brother: Robert Roe, and four sisters: Dolores Shay, Karren Hewett, Judy&nbsp;Acardia, and Peggy&nbsp;Kintigh.

Leona JoAnn Boggs

Janice Reeder was born in WaKeeney, Kansas, in November 1933, to Monte
 and Inez Poague, who would later become the most cherished and loving 
grandparents ever.&nbsp;

The youngest of four, Jan delighted in pranking and teasing her older
 siblings who, no doubt, paved the way in the high-jinks department. 
That sense of humor and fun-loving spirit stayed with her to the end. 
She passed away in her sleep, August 28, 2022, in WaKeeney.

Jan always had a song in her heart and would bust out an A capella 
rendition to even elevator muzak, often to the chagrin of her teenage 
children.&nbsp;&nbsp;If you ever heard someone singing in the produce aisle at 
IGA, there was a good chance it was Jan. I’m pretty sure Mom had us all 
singing before we learned to talk.

She and her husband of more than 65 years, Daryl C. Reeder, provided a
 loving home filled with music and laughter.&nbsp;&nbsp;All of us kids learned an 
instrument, all of us sang.&nbsp;&nbsp;There wasn’t a family get together without 
music. And we can all still hear her shout a correction from the kitchen
 for a sour note hit during piano practice in the living room.&nbsp;

Together, Jan and Daryl raised five kids on a shoestring budget — one
 daughter, four sons (Mom affectionately called them “The Brothers”), 
and instilled in them a deep love of family, music, books, good food, 
and games.&nbsp;&nbsp;Family get togethers always included music, food, and 
DingBat, a family card game.&nbsp;&nbsp;Jan was a cut-throat card player, and 
despite her sweet, little, old lady appearance would take your 
ace-high-trump, trick and gleefully cackle about it.

Mom was a great cook, although you would never hear that from 
her.&nbsp;&nbsp;And ‘The Brothers’ still salivate over her sheet-pan chocolate 
cake, and I would give anything for some of her fried chicken and mashed
 potatoes and gravy. There was always room for one more at the dinner 
table with Mom.&nbsp;

Jan attended Emporia State Teachers College before marrying Daryl in 
April 1953.&nbsp;&nbsp;Like her mother before her, Jan worked as a librarian at 
the WaKeeney City Library, and it became a defacto second home to all of
 us.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was a life-long member of The First Presbyterian Church of 
WaKeeney and sang in the choir, a member of Harmony Club, Bridge Club, 
Literary Club, and later also worked at Trego Lemke Memorial Hospital.&nbsp;

She will be greatly missed by her children, Mona, Michael, James, and
 Curtis, and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was 
predeceased by her husband, Daryl, her son John Reeder, grandson Sean 
Reeder, and granddaughter Hannah Reeder.&nbsp;

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm, Friday, September 2, 2022, 
at the Kansas Veteran’s Cemetery of WaKeeney.&nbsp;&nbsp;Arrangements pending 
Schmitt Funeral Home of WaKeeney, Kansas.&nbsp;

In lieu of flowers, the
