June 2020. How in the world did we get to June? I’ve had many instances lately that made me reflect on the past few months after realizing it’s now June. I have caught myself on more than one occasion asking myself, “Did I really complete that project only a few weeks ago?” or “Did that Zoom meeting really only happen last month?” It all seems like a lifetime ago. 

Since mid-March, I’ve been working remotely, the kids have been schooling virtually and my family has practiced social distancing to the best of our abilities. Our daily behaviors and weekly routines have radically changed. Yet, at the same time we have also stayed on schedule with farming.

While jobs that I completed from home in mid-March, April and even May seem like a lifetime ago, the growth on the farm indicates life is still happening in real-time.

The bees are buzzing and making collections from blooms that have appeared on time just like previous years. Corn planted in April has transformed from seeds below ground into healthy plants gaining height above ground at the same pace as previous years. The wheat is on schedule as it continues to turn from its vivid green into a golden yellow. 

The progress indicates the wheat will be ripe for harvest within the month — an event that happens around the same time every year. The continued growth evidenced on the farm maintains its place in time and space as in years before.

These visual reminders show life continues in real-time as opposed to my perceived warp-speed. 

The field of wheat I ride past on my evening bike rides serve as an anchor which grounds me and helps me recognize that while it may truly seem like a lifetime ago, the world continues to spin at the exact same rate it always has.

While the dizzying time spent in the farm office tackling school and work tasks in March, April and May seem like a blur now, the growth of the corn that my husband planted during that same time period serve as daily reminders we are, in fact, still living and operating in “normal” time. 

I’ve always appreciated June, and I think this year will be no different. The month has always served as a gateway allowing me to recognize, experience and appreciate time. Time where I can catch my breath and enjoy more moments with my kids who are now “home” for the summer. Time where the sunlight is available to enjoy for an extended period, and where I can walk through a field of growing corn and feel the wind while hearing a train whistle in the distance. Time where we can stop, sit and enjoy a meal in the field together as a family during wheat harvest. 

While the world around us may seem to be moving incredibly fast, there are constant reminders time has not changed. Seek out those reminders. Find those things that provide evidence that life continues at a “normal” pace and breathe them in. For me, those reminders are always present on the farm — especially in June.

On the final day to file for election, two more candidates
entered the race for Ellis County Commission.

Former Ellis County Health Services Director Kerry McCue filed
for election as a Republican in the race for the commission's Second District.

McCue will face incumbent Dustin Roths and Neal Younger in
the August primary election.

Democrat LR Boyd filed for election in the race for the commission's Third District. She will face Republican incumbent Dean
Haselhorst in the November general election.

Monday was the deadline for party candidates to file for
election.

Independent candidates can still file by petition up until 12
p.m. Aug. 3.

McCue, Boyd file for Ellis County Commission

Fort Hays State University President, Dr. Tisa Mason and the Executive Leadership Team released the following message to students, faculty and staff Monday:

Dear FHSU students and colleagues, Our nation has once again been torn apart by the tragic death of Mr. George Floyd, an African American citizen in Minneapolis, Minnesota.&nbsp; We all find ourselves at a loss to comprehend it all. Institutionalized racism is simply the greatest blight on the history of this great country. It hasn’t gone away, and it continues to rob our fellow Americans of hope and fuels despair, resentment, and profound anger.&nbsp; Why do we keep reliving incidents of racism, brutality, cruelty, violence, and massive destruction in a nation that has always had the values and resources to put a stop to it? LETTER: FHSU leadership addresses racism, injustice, role in the world

In the early morning hours of Friday, two police cars sustained damage after an attempt to pull over a speeding vehicle in downtown Hays turned hostile.

At around 2 a.m., officers observed a vehicle driving at a high rate of speed through the intersection of Main and 12th, according to Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler.

"The officer attempted to stop the vehicle and activated his lights and siren and pursued after the vehicle, but the vehicle refused to yield," he said.

The vehicle then turned on 12th, moved onto 11th and then back to 12th.

"As the vehicle was driving westbound on 12th Street, it came to the intersection of 12th and Milner, made a left turn and rammed into the front end of a patrol car that was on Milner," Schiebler said. "The vehicle then backed up and rammed the patrol vehicle again in an effort to try and pass it."

The suspect tried pushing the police car out of the way, he said. Once the driver realized getting past the police car was not possible, the driver reversed, hitting another patrol car.

A trailer parked in the area was also struck during the incident.

Officers were then able to pin the suspect's vehicle between the police cars and apprehended the driver without incident.

The driver was identified as Melissa Dawn Oldfield, 35, Hays.

After being detained, Oldfield was transported to Hays Medical Center for injuries sustained during the incident. A passenger in the vehicle also appeared to sustain minor injuries but denied treatment at the scene, Scheibler said.

"Once the officers got her safely into custody, they immediately moved to get them medical assistance," he said. "They did a great job getting her into custody and then deescalating the situation and getting them the treatment they needed and then working the DUI and gathering the evidence."

Upon release from the hospital, Oldfield was transported to the Ellis County jail on suspicion of transporting an open container, driving under the influence, flee and attempt to elude law enforcement, criminal damage to property, aggravated battery, and two counts of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer.

Eight traffic violations were also noted during the pursuit, Scheibler said.

Estimated damage to the vehicles is approximately $15,000, he added.

The suspect vehicle and the first police car that was struck were towed from the scene.

"The officers did an outstanding job of stopping the suspect that was engaging in reckless and dangerous behavior," Scheibler said.

A bond hearing was held later the same day.

Ellis County Attorney Tom Drees requested a $60,000 bond, but the court granted Oldfield an own-recognizance bond to be supervised by the court services office, according to Drees.

Release conditions include a no-contact order with the passenger of the vehicle, a mandatory alcohol evaluation within 30 days, no use of alcohol or drugs with random testing, restricted driving and, if available, SCRAM monitoring (a transdermal system for monitoring alcohol use, he said.

I am announcing today that I will not be seeking re-election to the Kansas House of Representatives in 2020.&nbsp; After twelve years as a state representative, preceded by two decades in local public service, it is time to bow out and enjoy life.

It has truly been an honor to have the faith and support of the good people of the 118th&nbsp;District throughout my tenure.&nbsp; I look back on those years with pride and satisfaction for all the good we were able to accomplish, but with deep regret for the worthwhile initiatives that have not yet become reality.

One of the greatest benefits of public service is the many friends one accumulates, including constituents, colleagues, legislative staff, and even lobbyists.&nbsp; These bonds of friendship will remain even as we depart.&nbsp; They have enriched my life, and I count myself greatly blessed by them.&nbsp;

Serving in the Kansas House of Representatives is a unique experience, and I will leave office next January with a deep respect for the institution and all who serve within its walls.&nbsp; Though our politics and strategies may not always align, I am convinced that all who serve do so with a genuine desire to make the great state of Kansas better.

Leaving office is made easier by knowing that the person who will succeed me in office is someone who will represent the 118th&nbsp;District with distinction.&nbsp; Jim Minnix of Scott City is the only one who filed for the position, so is virtually assured of election in November.&nbsp; Jim is a farmer-rancher and a 25-year member of the Scott County Commission.&nbsp; I am honored to turn over the reins to Jim.

Though the date of retirement is set, I am still your representative until January.&nbsp; Please let me know of your issues and concerns throughout the rest of 2020.

The coronavirus outbreak has created a bottleneck in the meatpacking industry as major packing plants have shut down or slowed production.

The pandemic is highlighting critical weaknesses in the nation's meat supply chain, resulting in some producers selling direct to consumers.

Adam Jones and his <a href="http://www.crookedcreekangus.com/">Crooked Creek Angus</a> in St. Francis has always sold some registered angus beef direct to consumers. With many grocery store meat shelves empty or limits being placed on in-store purchases, though, consumers are clamoring to buy direct from farmers.

Jones said he would love to sell more beef to his customers, but the small meat lockers where Jones would send the cattle to be slaughtered are booked into mid-2021.

Not being able to get the cattle to market is not only bad for the consumer because it causes shortages and higher prices, but it is worse for the producers.

Cattle that would normally be sold at 1,400 pounds are getting to 1,600 to 1,700 pounds, which makes the cattle more difficult to transport and slaughter, Jones said.

It becomes a game of diminishing returns, he said. The rancher has to keep feeding out the cattle, even after they have reached optimum weight.

"I think this is really showing a challenge in the cattle industry that predates the coronavirus," he said. "There is not enough processing, and it is controlled by four companies. If there is hiccup, like we also had at Holcomb, you get a bottleneck in the supple chain and you cannot get product through to consumers."

Ken Klemm of <a href="https://thebuffaloguys.com/">The Buffalo&nbsp;Guys</a> and Goodland Beef, northeast of Goodland, said he has had similar issues getting his bison and cattle to market. He has about 600 head of bison and 200 head of cattle.

Klemm said he prefers direct-to-consumer sales. They ultimately benefit the farmer, because they cut out the middle man. It also helps ranchers deal with fluctuating commodity prices, which are being seen now.

The prices per pound that consumers pay stays relatively stable, Klemm said.

"Keeping things steady and security are needed in ag," he said. "It takes decades take care of land and grow herds. Volatility is the enemy of ag."

Klemm also sells beef and bison direct to consumers, but, at this point, he can't get animals in to either the larger or smaller meatpacking facilities to be processed.

"These bookings have negatively impacted us," he said. "We are no longer able to sell to regular customers or new customers."

Klemm said he fears there could be a collapse in orders for the smaller meat packers. He compared the rush to buy meat to the toilet paper panic earlier in the pandemic.

"We have people booking slaughter spots that have no skin in the game," he said. "They have no animal, but they book an animal to slaughter. Six months from now, the person who ordered the beef doesn't want to pay. I'm concerned it will flip the other way.

"It is not conducive to supplying meat to people."

Even if the smaller meatpacking plants would have bookings open, selling direct to consumers is likely not the long-term solution to all of the ranchers' problems.

Jones said he was selling about 10 head a year direct to consumers out of a herd of about 200.

Klemm said he sets his budget a year in advance. Although the bottom has not dropped out of the bison market, returns for beef have been much lower. He said he was projecting he would bring in about a third to a half less than his cattle normally would bring at market this year.

Both ranchers anticipated Kansas will see producers go out of business as a result of losses this year.

Mid-size packers 'regulated out of business'

Both ranchers are among producers nationwide who are lobbying to change meatpacking regulations that would allow more small meatpackers to open or grow.

"Basically all of the medium packers were bought or regulated out of business," Klemm said. "Certainly that was out of design."

Producers by themselves will not be successful in pushing reforms, Jones said. All consumers who like to eat steaks also need to be engaging their congressmen, he said.

Klemm, however, was hopeful current meat shortages are not only educating consumers about where their meat comes from but creating a lasting direct-to-consumer market.

Purchases of deep freezes have sharply increased since the pandemic started. Consumers need deep freezes in order to purchase halves or quarters of a beef or hog direct from a rancher.

These are major purchases, that consumers will likely continue to use even after the pandemic is over, Klemm said.

"A lot of people are seeing the quality direct from the farm is superior from the grocery store," he said. "This tastes better. Why not keep doing it?"

Ranchers, consumers connect on social media

Charley Brown of Palco is one of those consumers who has chosen to buy direct during the COVID shortages, something that is new for his family.

Brown found producers on the newly created <a href="https://www.facebook.com/shopkansasfarms/">Shop Kansas Farms </a>Facebook page. The page seeks to connect local farmers and ranchers directly with consumers.

The page became so popular, others have started regional pages, with Jace Winder launching a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/1611987555626370/">Shop Northwest Kansas Farms</a> Facebook page.

The Shop Kansas Farms page has earned more than 134,000 followers since its creation April 28. The Northwest Kansas Farms has garnered 2,700 followers since its creation May 8.

"It's amazing how many people raise all sorts of different things out here in northwest Kansas," Winder said via Facebook.

The pages highlight not only meat producers, but farmers and gardeners selling produce and eggs.

Brown purchased a half of a pork, a quarter of a beef, a quart of raw honey and a gallon of goat's milk direct after visiting the pages.

"I like it," Brown said. "We averaged it out. I think we are actually getting a better deal per pound than we were getting at the grocery store, and we get quality meat that we know where it comes from."

Brown said he hoped purchasing direct could help save some family farms.

"The quality is 100 times what we are getting at the grocery store," he said. "We are cutting out the middle man, and we are cutting out those nasty feed lots."

Pandemic shows weakness in meat supply chain; ranchers go direct to consumers

Kansas Common crude at CHS in McPherson gained $1.75 on Friday to end the week and the month of May at $25.75 a barrel. The average price for the month of May was $18.93, an increase of nearly $9 a barrel over the month before, but down more than $30 from the average price in May of last year. The Energy Information Administration reported on U.S. crude-oil production through March of this year, with Kansas operators managing to pump more than 86-thousand barrels per day. That's down from a year ago, when the state managed nearly 92-thousand barrels per day. National production totaled about 12.7 million barrels per day. Baker Hughes confirms a continuing contraction in new oil-and-gas exploration. The weekly Rotary Rig County notes just 301 active drilling rigs nationwide, down 17 rigs. The count in Texas was down eleven rigs.&nbsp; Drilling activity is down in Kansas as well, with just four drilling rigs active across the state. The total number of inactive rigs is up one at 203. One operator is preparing to spud a new well on a lease in Ellis County. There are just four new drilling permits this week across the state, three in western Kansas and one east of Wichita.&nbsp; Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports 23 new well-completions for the week, 399 so far this year, compared to 655 at this time last year. There are 11 new completions in eastern Kansas, and 12 west of Wichita, including one in Stafford County. The government reported a 20,000 barrel decline in U.S. crude oil production last week, to 11.412 million barrels per day. Average production in the U.S. is down more than 800,000 barrels per day from the same week a year ago. The Energy Information Administration reports an increase in U.S. crude oil inventories of nearly eight million barrels. EIA says stockpiles are about 13% above the five-year average for this time of year. EIA reports crude imports last week of 7.2 million barrels per day, up by two million barrels per day from a week earlier. The four-week average is down more than 16% from a year ago. Analysis from the U.S. Energy Information Administration shows how pricing among crude-oil benchmarks and local grades are closely interconnected. WTI and London Brent pricing impacts the price of crude oil just about everywhere on the planet. So when U.S. futures prices dropped below zero earlier this year, so did the published prices at Kansas refineries, among many others. On April 20, the near-month Nymex contract for light sweet crude dropped as low as -$40.32 a barrel before closing at more than $37 below zero. That same day, prices at the Coffeyville Resources refinery dropped to -$47.50. The Energy Information Administration says Nymex prices directly impact other price markers because of physical linkages such as pipelines, as in Coffeyville, or because of a specific pricing formula, as is the case at CHS in McPherson. But there are limitations, including quality disparities between grades, and geographic transportation obstacles. The government reports on one silver lining amid the dire energy-related news of late: EIA says energy-related CO2 emissions will drop by 11 percent this year. If realized, that would represent the largest decline, in both percentage and absolute terms, in EIA emissions records dating back to 1949. The head of the International Energy Agency warns that global oil consumption has not peaked, telling Bloomberg TV that a sustained economic recovery and low prices could take global demand back were it was before the pandemic. Some industry observers insist we may have reached the peak for global demand, after consuming nearly 100 million barrels a day of crude oil or its equivalent last year. They argue the pandemic could trigger permanent changes like working-from-home and less overseas travel, thus reducing consumption permanently. A new report from an industry group shows Texas operators paid more than $13.4 billion in taxes and royalties in 2019, a 14% increase over a year earlier. The Houston Chronicle reports those figures were assessed when benchmark prices were about $50 a barrel.&nbsp; For the last several weeks China has been snapping up crude oil amid historic low prices. Reuters now cites customs data showing Russia has overtaken the Saudis as China's top supplier.&nbsp;&nbsp; The Association of American Railroads reports a continuing slump in total freight train traffic compared to last year. Oil-by-rail showed a slight increase over a week earlier, but remains about 26% behind last year's oil tanker traffic. Despite sitting atop the largest oil reserves in the world, gasoline is a precious commodity in Venezuela because of U.S. and international sanctions. This week the first of five tankers arrived in Venezuela from Iran, another oil nation targeted by sanctions. The U.S. State Department told the New York Times that Venezuela's government is a criminal organization that used illegally obtained gold to buy fuel from Tehran. There's no word if the U.S. would try to block future shipments.

COLBY — In response to the decision by local health officials on Friday to reopen Thomas County, Colby Community College announced campus will be open again to the public on Wednesday with stipulations.&nbsp; 

Until then, employees will adjust to new protocols for visitors. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Buildings will be unlocked, consistent with normal summer operations. Guests intending to enter facilities are required to make an appointment and answer screening questions. 

The swimming pool, gymnasium, Fit Lab, and Steve Lampe Athletic Center will open June 8. Arrangements must be made in advance with Athletic Director Mike Saddler or, for the pool, Kipp Nelson.

Employees and visitors are not required to wear masks. Social distancing is highly encouraged.

TOPEKA — State Rep. Ken Rahjes, R-Agra, has filed for re-election in the 110th District for another two-year term in the Kansas House of Representatives.

  Rahjes has served in the chamber since December 2015 and has wrapped up a two-year assignment as Chairman of the Higher Education Budget Committee where he worked in a bipartisan manner to strengthen investment dollars and encourage tuition freezes in the regent institutions.  

Rahjes has also served on the Taxation and Appropriations Committees where he has worked on a fair and comprehensive tax system, while also making investments in  tax revenues to help Kansans in education, economic development, transportation and social services. 

“We must have policies that strengthen the Kansas economy and hold the line on regulations and encourage growth and the entrepreneurial spirit that Kansans are known for,” Rahjes said. 

“The next session will need leaders that have experience in dealing with the good times and challenging times of the Kansas budget. I am looking forward to working with our leaders in finding solutions that will provide for essential services while holding the line on taxes,” Rahjes added.  

After this fall’s general election in November, the legislature will gather for leadership elections and committee assignments will be made soon after. One key issue in the next session will be re-apportionment of the U.S. House Districts, State School Board Districts and all Kansas State House and Senate Districts.  

Rahjes is married to Lori (Hoopingarner) Rahjes. They have four grown children and are small business owners. 

The 110th District is comprised  of the counties of  Norton, Phillips, Rooks, portions of Ellis (including the city of Ellis) and portions of Graham (including the city of Hill City).
