BUNKER HILL –&nbsp;The Russell County Area Community Foundation has awarded Smoky Hills PBS a grant for $1,000.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Russell County Area Community Foundation grant will support Smoky Hills PBS’ literacy leadership initiative in Russell County and will support the following:&nbsp;&nbsp;

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Children’s Programming on Smoky Hills PBS

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Book distribution program that will provide books to children in head start and early head start programs in Russell County

The Smoky Hills PBS Book Distribution program provides books each year to Head Start and&nbsp;other early education programs across central and western Kansas through the funding of many foundation partners throughout Kansas. Encouraging a love of reading at a young age is an important aspect of educational development and that serves as the basis of why Smoky Hills PBS provides its Book Distribution Program each year.

“We are excited to once again provide books to Russell county,” said Larry Calvery, General Manager of Smoky Hills PBS. “Educating the youth within our viewing area is an&nbsp;important part of what we do here at Smoky Hills PBS and we want to thank RCACF for partnering with us to make this happen for the youth in Russell county!”

Since 2001, Russell County Area Community Foundation has built stronger communities and helped donors make a difference through charitable giving in Russell County. Each year, the foundation distributes thousands of dollars back to our region through community grants.

HPD Activity Log May 28-June 1

The North Vine Street Corridor Improvement Project got underway Tuesday in Hays with the first phase of construction.&nbsp;

Monday was spent placing signs indicating traffic flow changes as well as mobilization of the contractor, Smoky Hill Construction of Salina. Most of the company's equipment is placed in the lot of the former Ambassador Hotel, which was razed after it closed.&nbsp;

Work starts first on the west Vine Street frontage road between 32nd and 37th Streets, estimated to take about eight weeks.

According to John Braun, Hays project director, the area is about 1,500 feet long and directly in front of Pheasant Run, Whiskey Creek, Days Inn, Arby's, Econo Lodge, Freddy's and 24/7 Travel Store.&nbsp;

Traffic is reduced to one northbound lane only. Motorists should use 32nd
Street to access businesses along the west frontage road, Braun advised.&nbsp;

"Work on the frontage road includes widening, installing curb and gutter on both sides of the road, sidewalk , and new concrete pavement," he said.

The traffic signs will be ubiquitous during the next 17 months of the $13.1 million project.

Four city-produced signs will remain intact throughout the project.

"The 'Pardon Our Progress' sign is kind of our advertising of the
project," said Collin Bielser, assistant city manager. "There'll be one
on the north side, one on the south side, and on the off-ramps for the
interstate."

The city has also designed signs with logos of the  businesses within the project and directional arrows pointing to their access during construction.

Although no left turns will be allowed during construction, access will remain open to all the affected businesses on Vine between 32nd and 41st Streets.

A <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2txzH_Cpyo&amp;feature=youtu.be">pre-construction
meeting</a>&nbsp;was hosted last week by Braun, who outlined the entire project
timeline over two construction seasons.&nbsp;

Hays High School junior Jonathan Rupe placed first at the state JAG-K competition this spring, qualifying him for nationals.

However, Rupe, 17, of Hays said JAG-K has helped him do more than just hone his math skills.

JAG-K — Jobs for America's Graduates-Kansas — helps students who might be at risk of not graduating high school succeed not only in finishing high school but completing training or education after they graduate.

"It's given me a lot things to do to present myself to employers. It has&nbsp; given me experiences in meeting people who own business or worked in many places," he said.

"I've seen people from all over come into JAG and share their experiences. It is interesting how many different ways there are of succeeding."

Johnny Matlock, JAG-K teacher, said Jonathan has struggled with his self-confidence. Winning the state competition was a big boost for his self-esteem, he said.

It did not come without some challenges. The state competition was conducted online because of the COVID-19 outbreak. Rupe was instructed to log-in five minutes before the competition was set to start, but his link was broken.

Frantically, he reached out to Matlock who was able to secure an alternate link from the state in time for him to log in to his math test.

Rupe took tests at the regional and state levels in order to qualify for nationals. The annual Career Development Conference also includes competitions for students in areas such as senior portfolio, public speaking and employability.

Matlock said the competition helps all of his students build skills and confidence. Another one of his students was afraid of getting up in front of people. She was in tears of fear the day of regionals, but qualified for state in public speaking.

"I think it gives them real world experience," Matlock said of the competition. "They do interviews. They practice employability skills. Others give presentations as they would in the business world. Students make posters for businesses. They are practical skills."

After completing school next year, Rupe hopes to work a couple of years before going to college. He wants to someday design video games.

"Video games are my passion," he said. "I love them so much."

Rupe&nbsp; has been in JAG-K since his sophomore year and said JAG-K class time has been a lifesaver, because it has given him extra time to do his homework.&nbsp;

The students competed in their state competition virtually after the team took first place at their regional in Hays.&nbsp;The State CDC took place May 20 on Zoom.

"In one respect, we had been training for this moment all year – an opportunity to practice resiliency, a major core competency that JAG-K seeks to develop in every student. " Matlock said.

In a normal year, Rupe would be eligible to travel to Washington, D.C., for the national Career Development Conference. However, he said did not know the format for this year's competition considering the COVID-19 outbreak.

Every student in the JAG-K program, which is in its second year at HHS, completed a project for the CDC.&nbsp;

"We competed really well as a team. We took first place as a team at regionals and it was because of everyone’s work," Matlock said. "It was a culmination of what everyone did. ... I felt the kids really worked hard, and I think it even showed at the state level where we placed fourth. It was very cool."

The following students also placed at the state and regional competitions.

Knights will honor first responders at weekend barbecue

Hospice nurse Helen Windholz, RN, was recently recognized as a Daisy Award winner at HaysMed, part of The University of Kansas Health System.&nbsp;

This award is presented to an RN in deep appreciation of all that they do, who they are, and the incredible meaningful difference that they have made in the lives of so many people.&nbsp;Windholz was nominated by a family member of one of her patients.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Windholz was selected from a group of blinded nominations voted on by the HaysMed Practice Committee. The Practice Committee consists of staff and supervisors from a variety of departments across HaysMed.&nbsp; Nominations are received from patients and family members, physicians, volunteers and associates for nurses in inpatient, outpatient and clinic settings. &nbsp;

June 2020. How in the world did we get to June? I’ve had many instances lately that made me reflect on the past few months after realizing it’s now June. I have caught myself on more than one occasion asking myself, “Did I really complete that project only a few weeks ago?” or “Did that Zoom meeting really only happen last month?” It all seems like a lifetime ago. 

Since mid-March, I’ve been working remotely, the kids have been schooling virtually and my family has practiced social distancing to the best of our abilities. Our daily behaviors and weekly routines have radically changed. Yet, at the same time we have also stayed on schedule with farming.

While jobs that I completed from home in mid-March, April and even May seem like a lifetime ago, the growth on the farm indicates life is still happening in real-time.

The bees are buzzing and making collections from blooms that have appeared on time just like previous years. Corn planted in April has transformed from seeds below ground into healthy plants gaining height above ground at the same pace as previous years. The wheat is on schedule as it continues to turn from its vivid green into a golden yellow. 

The progress indicates the wheat will be ripe for harvest within the month — an event that happens around the same time every year. The continued growth evidenced on the farm maintains its place in time and space as in years before.

I’ve always appreciated June, and I think this year will be no different. The month has always served as a gateway allowing me to recognize, experience and appreciate time. Time where I can catch my breath and enjoy more moments with my kids who are now “home” for the summer. Time where the sunlight is available to enjoy for an extended period, and where I can walk through a field of growing corn and feel the wind while hearing a train whistle in the distance. Time where we can stop, sit and enjoy a meal in the field together as a family during wheat harvest. While the world around us may seem to be moving incredibly fast, there are constant reminders time has not changed. Seek out those reminders. Find those things that provide evidence that life continues at a “normal” pace and breathe them in.
