FHSU will host a Drive Thru Tree Lighting Ceremony Tuesday, Dec. 1, 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. The route begins at the FHSU entrance on the bypass. Enjoy festive music on 94.3 FM and 1500 AM while viewing twinkling lights and decorations. The first 125 people will get an FHSU holiday sweater, holiday craft, cookies, and hot chocolate. Don’t forget your letter for Santa!

The Downtown Ice Rink is now open at the Downtown Pavilion at 10th and Main. Enjoy holiday music and hot cocoa while you try skating on this all-weather synthetic surface. A $7 ticket purchase includes skate rental.

Difficult economic times mean some donors have less to give this holiday season, but more families are in need of the services provided by local charities, said Erica Berges, United Way of Ellis County executive director.

Giving Tuesday, which is celebrated the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, is a global effort to encourage charitable giving.

Berges encouraged local residents to give today during Giving Tuesday and through the holiday season to help fill the revenue gap for charities.

The United Way is in the midst of its annual fundraising campaign, and Berges said giving is lagging behind where it was at the same time last year.

The campaign is only about 30 percent to goal, whereas in 2019 the campaign was 60 percent to goal at the end of November. The&nbsp;&nbsp;United Way is still waiting on several large employers's pledges to be received, but Berges said she is concerned about the numbers.

Many charities have also have seen decreases in revenue because they were unable to conduct fundraisers this year because of the pandemic.

"We are really needing the community to pull together and give this year," Berges said.

If United Way does not reach it's fundraising goal, less money will be available to distribute to its partner agencies and the agencies will be able to help fewer people, Beges said, adding there is a great need for services at this time.

"The support local, shop local is so important, so is giving local," she said.

On Thursday Dec. 3 there will be a Dine Out Day at Professor's and on Dec. 14 there will be a Dine Day at Arthur's Pizza in Ellis with a portion of the proceeds on both days benefiting the United Way.&nbsp;

First Call for Help: Families struggle with the basics

First Call for Help, which provides food, rent and utility assistance, has seen an increase in need for its service, Linda Mills, executive director, said.

Many families had one or more household members out of work during the shutdown, and although many of those employees have gone back to work, families are struggling to catch up on bills.

In addition, families have been hit with losses of income because of quarantines.&nbsp;

First Call for Help received funds from the CARES Act to help cover the costs of expanded services.&nbsp;However, the longer the pandemic continues, the more need Mills said she thinks the agency will see.

First Call for Help is in the process of delivering non-perishable food from the annual Thanksgiving Feast grocery drive, so it does not need food donations at this time. However, the agency can always use diapers.

In addition to raising funds to support ongoing needs in the community, First Call for Help is also in the midst of a capital campaign to raise $250,000 for its <a href="https://archive.hayspost.com/2019/07/30/first-call-for-help-launches-housing-fundraising-campaign-2/">First Step transitional housing program</a>.

The agency is about half way to its fundraising goal. Concrete work on the project has already begun at the First Call building on 13th Street.

When the project is completed, it will include a four-bedroom housing unit with a small kitchen/common area, as well as a laundry area.&nbsp;Each room will be able to house up to three people.

CASA: Raising funds harder during pandemic

Tabitha Keith, CASA of the High Plains executive director, said COVID has limited CASA's fundraising opportunities.

The organization, which provides advocates in court for children who have been removed from their homes because of abuse or neglect, conducts its annual No Show Tea in conjunction with Giving Tuesday.

It is a mail and social media fundraiser, and you don't need to leave your house to participate.

More than 100 children annually are removed from their homes within CASA of the High Plains coverage area, which includes Ellis, Rooks, Trego and Gove counties.

"With your help, we can continue to provide essential services to abused and neglected children in the court system," Keith said.

ARC Park pushing to reach goal for playground, splash pad

The ARC Park project is 6 percent away from its goal for the the first two phases, an accessible playground and splash pad.

If the group can finish the fundraising for the first two phases soon, equipment for the splash pad can be ordered in time for a scheduled opening by July 4, said Brent Kaiser, Arc of the Central Plains activities director.

"We think [the splash pad] is really possible by July 4," Kaiser said. "A couple of our big donations were contingent on 'Let's get this done by next summer.' That's our goal, and I really think we're going to get there. It is just a matter of getting those last dollars to come in to be able to cover it."

The equipment has already been received for the accessible playground. It is waiting to be installed.

"For us there a couple of pieces to this," Kaiser said of Giving Tuesday. "No. 1&nbsp; is raising the funds. That is a really important piece to all of this because we know we have to have the funds to get there, but the other thing is to continue to raise awareness about our project, to continue to get it out there."

Kaiser said he and others with the project are aware some people in the community still don't know about the project.

"We know there are people who are looking to make donations at the end of the year," he said, "and we just want to be on that radar if possible. If not, then there are so many other great non-profits in our community as well."

Giving Tuesday chance to donate as charities, community struggle

Steve Hale has been named director of communications for the Kansas Department of Transportation.

He is excited to be involved in the agency’s Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program. 

“KDOT is a well-respected agency in our state,” Hale said. “Kansans understand the importance of safe and reliable transportation infrastructure, whether it involves roads, rail, aviation or technology. The IKE program is an example of KDOT’s commitment to the well-being of Kansas both now and into the future.”

Hale grew up in Cheyenne County and graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in journalism. 

For 20 years he worked as a reporter, editor and publisher for newspapers in McPherson, Cimarron, Arkansas City, Gardner, Overland Park and Nevada, Missouri. Hale then transitioned into the marketing and public relations fields. For the past 18 months he served as a Senior Partnership Specialist with the 2020 Census in Kansas.

During his time at the Census Bureau, Hale traveled across Kansas frequently, talking to citizens about the importance the census had on their communities. Working at KDOT will be similar, he said, as it also embodies service to the public.

“Everyone on the KDOT team is working for the betterment of Kansas,” Hale said.

While traveling, Hale appreciated being able to tour many scenic highways across the state. One in particular caught his attention: K-14 between I-70 and Beloit.&nbsp;“It’s arguably the most scenic two-lane highway in Kansas. It’s beautiful.”

He and his wife,&nbsp;Sharyl, reside in Gardner. They have two grown sons and two grandsons.

The Hays Arts Council proudly announces the&nbsp;37th annual Five State Photography Exhibition&nbsp;Dec. 5 through Feb. 12.

This year photographers submitted unframed 8x10 inch photographs in the categories of Nature, People and Open.&nbsp;

 453 photographs were entered from Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, Oklahoma and Colorado. 

150 of those images were selected for exhibition by juror Charlie Riedel, a Hays native, who also determined cash awards totaling $1,500. The accepted photographs will be framed for exhibition.

Project expenses are supported by our sponsors:&nbsp;Midwest Energy, Bank of Hays, and Eagle Communications.

Due to current restrictions, we are unable to host our traditional Winter Art Walk reception.

HAC 5-State Photography Exhibition opens Saturday with open house

The Wonder Women League sought to ease the burden on both groups Monday. The group distributed gift bags to residents of the&nbsp;Ascension Living ViaChristi Village and the Good Samaritan Society.

Each resident received their own gift bag containing a bag of PoPt popcorn, a hand cream, lip balm, eyeglass cleaning cloth, and snack size bag of assorted mints.

In addition to their gift bag, they were able to choose an item or two from a tote containing body wash, emery boards, soft fuzzy socks, chocolates, puzzles, adult coloring books, colored pencils, word search books and facial tissue. Staff at the long-term care facilities were treated to Daylight Donuts and bags of PoPt popcorn in appreciation of their service.

Members of the holiday gift project were&nbsp;Deb Hoffman, Jan Klaus, Sherry Dryden, Pat Klaus, Marie Froelich and LaVonne Giess.

"We do so much for the kids," Hoffman said. "We wanted to do something for our elders. It is so hard for them being stuck in their rooms."

TREGO COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 2a.m. Tuesday in Trego County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Lexus passenger vehicle driven by Robert F. Bailey, 32, Indianapolis, IN., was westbound on Interstate 70 just west of Ellis.

The vehicle started to drift to the northern shoulder. The driver aggressively steered to the left before overcorrecting to the right and lost control of the vehicle. This caused the vehicle to slide down the embankment strike a telephone pole and overturned. 

EMS transported Bailey to Hays Medical Center. He was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

Eagle Radio teams with Red Cross to replenish vehicle fleet

The Ellis County Health Department on Monday reported the average number of new coronavirus cases per day in the last seven days again fell from 34 on Friday to 24 on Monday.

There were 58 new cases of COVID-19 identified in Ellis County since Friday. There are currently 423 active cases, including 13 active hospitalizations of Ellis County residents, and 1,953 recovered cases.&nbsp;As of Monday, there were 35 COVID-19 inpatients at HaysMed, according to The University of Kansas Health System, down from 37 on Wednesday.

The seven-day average of percent of positive tests fell to 27.4 percent — down from 34.7 percent on Friday.

Since reporting began, there have been 2,404 cases of COVID-19 identified in Ellis County, including 28 coronavirus-related deaths.

Of the total 13,242 tests administered, 16.9 percent have returned positive for COVID-19.

Doctors from&nbsp;The University of Kansas Health System said Monday they will know by Dec. 10 to 14 whether the Thanksgiving holiday will cause another spike in cases.

Ellis Co. per-day virus rate falls; 58 new cases identified

WICHITA&nbsp;– A California man pleaded guilty today to federal charges that officers found more than 9 pounds of fentanyl and more than 8 pounds of heroin when they stopped his car in Kansas, U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said in a news release Monday.

Eduardo Arellano-Sanchez, 24, Cathedral City, Calif., pleaded guilty to one count of interstate travel in furtherance of drug trafficking and one count of using a cellphone in furtherance of drug trafficking.

In his plea, Arellano-Sanchez admitted that on Aug. 21, 2019, officers stopped his car in Thomas County. They found the fentanyl and heroin in his car. He was using his cellphone to navigate to a drug transaction to take place in New York.

Sentencing is set for Feb. 16. Prosecutors are recommending a sentence of 96 months in federal prison. McAllister commended the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Drug Enforcement Administration and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Katie Andrusak for their work on the case.

The Hays Police Department is requesting assistance in locating runaway juvenile Brennon Gage Garrison. 

Brennon was last seen at approximately 7 p.m. Nov. 28 and is believed to be in Hays or Ellis.

He is 16 years old, 6’0”, 155 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes.

HPD asks for public help locating missing teen

TOPEKA — Leadership Kansas recently named Jenifer Sanderson, Goodland, as the recipient of its 2020 Leadership Kansas Jim Edwards Alumnus of the Year Award.

Goodland woman named Leadership Kansas 2020 Alumnus of the Year

As all the various hunting seasons unfold here in Kansas, so do incidents involving illegal hunters, AKA poachers. As I worked on this week’s column, I stumbled upon this heart-felt letter sent to me by a reader a few years back, along with in-depth explanations of problems they have each year with poachers on their land. I felt the letter very applicable and worth sharing, so here is this week’s column entitled “Dear Poacher.”&nbsp;

	The time is soon approaching to fill your pickup gas tank, load up your “partner in crime”, and set out to fill your freezer, illegally, with venison, turkey, deer and pheasant.&nbsp; Although you may argue that all roads and right of ways belong to the public and the wildlife only belongs to the creator, let me argue a different point of view. As a landowner and a hunter, your style of hunting violates the work we have done to keep the wildlife healthy and available for our family and friends.&nbsp; Let me explain.

	This summer/fall particularly has been tough on the wildlife.&nbsp; Ponds have dried up and water sources have become scarce.&nbsp; Grain crops have failed to produce the usually yields.&nbsp; Habitat for wildlife has been destroyed by grazing and haying, leaving the animals looking for new cover and feed. &nbsp;

	This landowner has responded to this situation by establishing fresh water resources.&nbsp; We hauled water twice or more a week.&nbsp; Salt and mineral blocks were set out and food plots were planted and replanted several times.&nbsp; Windmills were left pumping in vacant pastures.&nbsp; Cattle were fenced out of future food sources.&nbsp; We shared our growing crops (mostly involuntarily).&nbsp; We maintained current orchards and planted additional orchards for wildlife.

	These things were not done to enhance your chances of success.&nbsp; They were done to ensure that deer, turkey, pheasant, and quail would continue to flourish and be available for our hunters, not only now, but for future generations.

	Therefore, we want to make the following promises:

All of the above are illegal.&nbsp; If caught, you risk losing your vehicle, your guns, your hunting privileges, and sometimes your job.&nbsp; A hefty fine is usually part of the package deal.

	We have worked very hard to help sustain and improve the quality and quantity of the wildlife in our area.&nbsp; As hunting seasons continue to open, do both of us a favor; hunt legally or stay at home.

Exploring Outdoors Kansas: Dear Poacher

The holidays are an excellent time to bring the family together for a game.&nbsp;&nbsp;Playing board games gets everyone in the same room and helps family members across generations connect and have a great time together. Board games are inexpensive and have benefits well beyond the activity itself. Games are an entertaining and painless way to help kids build essential learning skills on the sly or by accidental learning, which means there’s no anxiety or resistance.

Some specifically chosen board games are excellent for young members of the family as they learn numbers and words. Research has documented a positive relationship between academic board games and improvement in the classroom. Older adults can also benefit from many of the same concepts that children do – stimulating the mind, fostering relationships and strengthening social skills.

In his book “Family Treasures: Creating Strong Families”, John DeFrain covers six qualities that strong, successful families around the world exhibit: enjoyable time together; appreciation and affection for each other; positive communication; spiritual well-being (values, beliefs, life skills); successful management of stress and crisis; and commitment to each other.

Hopefully your family will find a game that will be brought to the table many times during the year and not just played during the holiday season. Here are some things to have in mind when carving out time for a family game night:

• Avoid choosing a board game that is too hard for your kids’ ages, or one that everybody hates playing. Start by playing one that your youngest child definitely can play. After that, let the younger children team up with someone for a more challenging game.

• Schedule a regular day and time on the calendar for playing a board game. Designate the same day every week. Keep it short at the beginning and then add more time as desired.

• Make it a rule that technology must be set aside until your game night is over.

• Keep a stash of great board games around the house. You’ll be sure to find a taker when you ask, “Does anyone want to play a game?”

UNRUH: Bonding through board games

“Hungry Hungry Heroes.” Hmm, that sounds like the game called Hungry Hungry Hippos. This variation on that name is one example of the creative ways that leaders in Mitchell County supported their communities during the pandemic with a collaboration called Mitchell County Strong.&nbsp;

Heather Hartman is Mitchell County director of community development. A Beloit native, she had been a small business owner in Mitchell County before becoming county community development director in 2012.&nbsp;

“When the pandemic hit, it was scary,” Heather said. “There were projections that 30% of locally owned small businesses would close.” Heather’s office in Beloit is co-located with two other offices: the Chamber of Commerce and the community foundation. “Each of us was a separate organization, but what we did would never have happened if we weren’t all here together,” Heather said.&nbsp;

As shutdown orders were being issued, the three directors of these units immediately met to discuss what could be done. “Our main goal was to help these businesses and nonprofit organizations stay afloat,” Heather said.&nbsp;

One of their board members had heard from Manhattan Running Company about Manhattan’s gift certificate program and disaster recovery fund through the Manhattan Community Foundation. These women decided to try something similar.&nbsp;

They launched a “Buy 1, Give 1” initiative through which people could buy a gift certificate to a store in Mitchell County, and MCS would match it with a grocery gift card to be donated to a local family in need. The initiative took off.&nbsp;

“We were trying to think of a name for this, and somebody posted a comment about how we were trying to keep Mitchell County strong,” Heather said. That became the name.&nbsp;

Mitchell County Strong, or MCS, became the title of this collaboration between the Solomon Valley Community Foundation,&nbsp;the Beloit Area Chamber of Commerce, and Solomon Valley Economic Development.&nbsp;

A disaster relief fund was established at the community foundation. “Based on the advice we received from the ministerial alliance, we kept the application process really simple, and it worked,” Heather said.&nbsp;MCS also recognized the need for businesses to use online marketing due to the pandemic. “Lots of our local businesses didn’t even have a website,” Heather said. The coalition organized an online store on which customers could buy gift cards from local businesses. MCS also offered a grocery assistance program plus mini-grants for local nonprofit organizations.&nbsp;A local auctioneer with Hansen Auction Company agreed to conduct an online auction to benefit the project, while waiving the selling fee and donating the buyers’ fees to the disaster recovery fund.&nbsp;MCS programs were county-wide, supporting stores in the county seat of Beloit plus rural communities such as Cawker City, population 469, Glen Elder, population 427, and Tipton, population 210 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;Mitchell County Strong wanted to honor frontline workers, so its organizers invited the public to nominate a deserving person to receive a free lunch weekly. As a play on the Hungry Hungry Hippos name, they called the program Hungry Hungry Heroes.&nbsp;“We thought people would nominate doctors and EMTs, but they also nominated their trash workers and grocery store clerks, which was great,” Heather said. MCS delivered a meal to a different winner each week.&nbsp;A beautiful promotional video about Mitchell County was already being developed and is posted&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mitchellcountystrong.com/mitchell-co-welcome-home">on the website</a>.&nbsp;Ultimately, the project generated more than $53,000 in gift card sales, $52,000 from the online auction, and $48,000 in partnership support. “We got more than $150,000 into the hands of our local citizens and businesses,” Heather said.
