The annual Dr. Fred P. Ruda Teaming Up for Tots Day at Fort Hays State University, a Christmas toy-building project, was canceled because of COVID-19 concerns.

However, students and faculty in the Department of Applied Technology still plan to assemble 200 wooden toys for children who otherwise might not receive a Christmas gift.

The TUFT project was started in 1990 by Ruda, former chair of the department. FHSU students designed the toys. Volunteers of all ages from the university and the Hays community would converge on the woodshop in Davis Hall to sand, glue, nail, assemble and apply oil finish to the toys. The project moved to the new Center for Applied Technology in 2017.

Kim Stewart, current department chair, said that because of the pandemic, the faculty decided to have students in FHSU’s chapter of the Technology and Engineering Education Collegiate Association (TEECA) construct the toys the first week of December. The toys will be delivered to the local TUFT organization, which then distributes them in time for Christmas.

As in years past, the Materials, Processes and Production class taught by Dr. Duane Renfrow, associate professor of applied technology, will design and cut the pieces for a wooden pick-up truck and create instructions to guide the assembly process. The TEECA students then will assemble the toy trucks.&nbsp;

“We really believe it’s still important to continue this project,” Stewart said. “Although we are saddened we can’t have university and community members participate this year for safety reasons, it’s a tradition that has gone on for more than 30 years, one that we still want to continue.”

In my letter to the editor I will make my case that at this point in time the Democrat Party is the worst political party ever in American history.&nbsp; The corruption is massive and unprecedented.&nbsp; To begin with let's look at our current national election where our president and even some congressional candidates are yet to be determined.&nbsp; The election was supposed to be determined over a week ago.&nbsp; Seventy some million Trump voters believe the election is being stolen by Democrats, and their minions.&nbsp; The means to steal this year's election were put into motion years ago.&nbsp; Four very important things took place.&nbsp; 1) Democrats have always pushed for open borders with the hope illegals would vote and help steal elections.&nbsp; 2) Dems have pushed and pushed to eliminate photo IDs or any kind of verification when voting. 3) Dems have filed hundreds of lawsuits over the years forcing states to change election voting laws that makes it easier to commit voter fraud. And, 4) the millions of mail in ballots sent out months ago to every warm body in America (even cold ones) was a scheme to encourage voter fraud and steal the the election through cheating and chaos.&nbsp;&nbsp; Dems, with the help of 95% of America's media, claim there is no evidence of voter fraud.&nbsp; The voter fraud is all over the place and will come out after Republican lawsuits that are all within the law and our constitution.&nbsp; Mark my words, the fraud is massive. especially as it relates to election software.&nbsp; A prominent no nonsense female lawyer by the name of Sydney Powell said it's like bursting out of a fire hose and she can prove the fraud.&nbsp; To further prove my point about corruption, let's look at the three years and 35 million taxpayer monies spent by Dems to destroy a Trump presidency. Top dogs like Barack Hussein Obama, Joe Biden, Hillary and multiple FBI personnel&nbsp; could end up paying a big price, even possible prison time.&nbsp; The claim Trump colluded with Russia to win the 2016 election was a complete falsehood in that there was never ever any evidence. The attempted coup was corruption at its worst. In fact, it was treason and there's overwhelming evidence to prove the attempted coup by the people just mentioned. Never before in our history has an outgoing president tried to overthrow an incoming president's right to the White House. That's what many banana republics and third world countries do quite often.&nbsp; It boggles the mind that corrupt Joe Biden could even be the Democrat's presidential candidate. What is all of this going to look like as history is written and recorded? As if the false Trump/Russia collusion story wasn't enough to stop the corruption. the House of Representatives controlled by Democrats conjured up a false reason to impeach Trump. After weeks of ludicrous left wing testimony, it all ended up to be a hoax, and another black eye for the party.&nbsp; Democrats Pelosi, Nadler and Schiff told one lie after another during the process.&nbsp; Part of the reason for the impeachment was to protect Vice President Biden, who under Obama, was put in charge of our relations with Ukraine.&nbsp; Biden was caught on TV for God and all of us to see and hear him say that "SOB" Ukraine official investigating my son Hunter's energy company gets fired or the country does not get a billion in foreign aid of U.S. taxpayer monies. Instead Dems tried to implicate Trump over some words he had with Ukraine's new president, none of which amounted to anything regarding impeachment. Hunter Biden was raking in millions for being on the Ukraine Burisma board of directors with absolutely no experience.&nbsp; The energy company, of course, was expecting something from VP Biden in return by putting his son on the board.&nbsp; Just one reason Biden Sr. is known as "quid pro Joe."&nbsp; Yup, massive corruption of "you line my pockets and I will line yours with U.S. taxpayer dollars." "Quid pro Joe" denies he knows anything about the his son and brother's businesses overseas.&nbsp; That's an outright lie. There's overwhelming evidence to the contrary. The point about Biden I am trying to make is that the Democrat Party may have chosen a candidate for president as the most corrupt politician in American history.&nbsp; That furthers my argument that we act like a third world country with the worst political party ever.&nbsp; Based on what I presented thus far in the way of facts (not opinion) does any open minded sane person think it is beyond reason for Democrats not to try stealing elections if they could?&nbsp; It all begs the question "how in the world does a political party and individuals within it get away with virtually anything and everything?"&nbsp; How in the world and in the Good Lord's name can this be happening in a country known for being the most democratic and Christian on planet earth?&nbsp; We may have to strike the word Christian. Now we know, with massive corruption in the last four years and previous eight, why our president Barack Hussein said "we are no longer a Christian nation." Speaking of religion, I would suggest many give considerable thought about what to say to powers above when it's time to leave planet earth.&nbsp; And, as a Christian myself, I'm as serious as one can be about this issue.&nbsp; These "united states" of America have been corrupted to the core. That is evident as one looks at the treatment Democrats get versus Republicans.&nbsp; I'm appalled at the unequal justice.&nbsp; Nobody's paying a price for the massive corruption unless you consider the criminal behavior our president has had to put up with for four years.&nbsp; It's a miracle Donald J. Trump still stands! Not only does Trump daily have to withstand the onslaught of a political party and their media, there are many other forces out to destroy him like Democrat billionaire donors, Big Tech, big banks, academia, and what is called the "deep state" and "establishment."&nbsp; Ninety five percent of media is in the tank for Joe Biden as president and spends 100% of its time attacking Trump.&nbsp; If Biden wins the presidency he can thank our corrupt media which succeeded in getting over half of Biden voters to literally hate Donald J. Trump, and even his family.&nbsp; &nbsp;If 73 some million who voted for Trump just love the man, why such pathological hate from Democrats?&nbsp; When millions upon millions choose our president on the basis of Biden being likeable and Trump not, we have become a third world country.&nbsp; America's media decides who our president will be and not you and I as voters. Our founders are turning over in their graves! In the tank for Biden polls were so far off, all pollsters should forever be a thing of the past.&nbsp;&nbsp; Media is the enemy of the people. It hid Biden in a basement never ever going to him to explain his corruption.&nbsp; There were a dozen questions every voter needed to know about Biden's radical agendas and platform should he become president, but in the tank Biden journalists acted as if they didn't even care.&nbsp; Nor did media ever report on the incredible Trump accomplishments that in four years exceeded Biden's 47 years as a politician living on the taxpayer's dime. Media isn't even a friend to its own Democrat base. Who among us wants to be indoctrinated and brainwashed? Who among us wants to be fed negative and false information from the time we get up in the morning until we go to bed?&nbsp; Who among us wants to be kept in the dark about what is really going on in the realm of American politics and government? Who among us wants a new president that might face impeachment the minute he takes office? Let's face it readers, common sense alone leads most of us Americans to believe Biden could not possibly become our president without voter fraud.&nbsp; He didn't even campaign much for the job. He hid out in his basement to avoid his notorious gaffes and many signs of old age cognitive impairment.&nbsp; He is a corrupt politician and except for media his chances to win should be logically and mathematically impossible.&nbsp;&nbsp; Who in their right mind wants Biden's radical agendas like socialism, open borders, higher taxes, elimination&nbsp; of gas and oil, defunding the police, or putting in place a scheme that would prevent a Republican from ever occupying&nbsp; the White House again or Republicans controlling congress?&nbsp; And, let's not forget unrestricted barbaric abortions like partial birth abortions, even killing a baby that survives an abortion. I don't think most Americans want our most sacred document known as the Constitution completely changed or eliminated altogether.&nbsp; Communist China and good old Russia would love for all of that to happen.&nbsp; There is every indication that should Biden win he would shortly thereafter turn over the most powerful political office in the world to his running mate Kamala Harris. She has been dubbed the most far left liberal voting senator in congress. It's all a scheme to get a minority and female, not directly chosen by voters, into the White House nefariously. On the other hand, we have a president Trump setting historical records all over the place and having many rallies clearly showing millions of Americans just love the man. Common sense alone speaks volumes when we look at the big picture! Some reputable people are claiming Trump not only won the election, but won in a landslide.&nbsp; Only time will tell whether we are truly a democratic republic, or a third world country.&nbsp;

 🏀WATCH: Hays High vs Hugoton

An almost 20-year tradition in Downtown Hays, the Frostfest Parade, will look a little different this year. Downtown Hays Development Corp. has consulted with the Hays Police Department and determined a traditional parade is not in the community's best interest. With COVID-19 cases still at a high, many alternatives were considered.

"We don't want to say the parade is canceled," said Sara Bloom DHDC executive director. "But we're calling on the community to create an extraordinary event, unlike any parade we've ever had before."&nbsp;

DHDC is looking to the community to "be" the Frostfest parade. The community is encouraged to decorate their vehicles, throw on some glow sticks, and break out those Santa and elf hats. From 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 19, DHDC hopes Main Street will turn into a magical, illuminated wonderland of cheerful car loads.&nbsp;

Suppose your business had plans to be a part of the parade? In that case, DHDC hopes you will still be a part of the fun and looks forward to seeing your entry on Main Street, wishing the community a Merry Christmas.&nbsp;

"This is the best year to create this type of Christmas event," Bloom said. "The DHDC Physical Improvement Committee worked really hard this year to make Main Street the brightest it's ever been. The wreaths have new lights, the tree in UP Park has triple the bulbs on it, it's all just really beautiful and creates a wonderful ambiance."&nbsp;

Santa and Mrs. Claus are usually the grand finale of the parade each year and they will still have a large role in this year's event. 1012 Main will be temporarily turned into Santa's workshop. The transformation will begin on the 15th. Then on the evening of the 19th, kids will be able to see Santa working hard in his workshop and checking his list twice. They'll even be able to drop off their letters. DHDC asks that this Santa remain the only "live" Santa present at the event.

"We're trying to create as much Christmas magic as possible while keeping the community's health top of mind," Bloom said. "Everyone involved in this decision agreed we didn't want to cancel. The community needs Frostfest, but we need to keep people safe too.”

&nbsp;Characters such as a reindeer, a snowman, a Christmas tree, and more will also be making appearances on The Bricks. Watch for them to be strolling Main Street and waving to passing vehicles. Glow sticks and other treats will be distributed in front of the Chestnut Building, 1200 Main Street, by multiple businesses, including DHDC.&nbsp;

The parade won't be the only event experiencing a change. The Annual Downtown Dollar Giveaway will be moving to a virtual format. Now through December 19, customers can shop 15 Downtown businesses to earn tickets into a $2,000 and $1,000 Downtown Dollar drawing. The drawing was planned for 5:00 pm inside The Strand Event Center. Instead of creating a large gathering, the prizes will now be drawn virtually via a Facebook live on The Bricks in Downtown Hays Facebook page, same date and time. If you are a ticket holder, you're encouraged to watch the live on December 19 at 5:00 pm, but winners will have 48 hours to come forward with the winning ticket and claim their prize.&nbsp;

TOPEKA—The Kansas Supreme Court has authorized the temporary relocation of Thomas County District Court offices from the Thomas County Courthouse to 1105 Taylor Ave. in Colby.

The move will allow for renovations to the courthouse. District court offices will remain in the temporary location until they move to a new judicial center being built next to the courthouse.

Thomas County District Court offices will be closed Thursday, December 3, and Friday, December 4, for the move. Offices will reopen at the temporary location Monday, December 7.

All COVID-19 safety protocols will be observed at the temporary location. These include answering questions about symptoms of or possible exposure to COVID-19, wearing a face mask while in the building, and maintaining 6 feet of physical distance from others.

The authorization does not allow for jury trials to be conducted at the temporary location because the facility does not meet the&nbsp;<a href="https://kansascourts.org/l/r_mXcDniw5m0LCoJudPzBal2jvWzj8xpZlc_PXbRu1Q" target="_blank">Supreme Court Mandates and Guidance Regarding Resuming Jury Proceedings</a>.

HaysMed is full and turning transfers from rural hospitals away, the hospital's medical director said Wednesday morning.

The hospital's census for COVID patients has been in the mid-30s for the past month, which is about half of the hospital's staffed beds, Dr. Heather Harris, HaysMed medical director, said during a University of Kansas Health System press conference on Wednesday.

The average age of COVID patients admitted to HaysMed is 76, which is trending younger, Harris said. The average length of stay is 10 days, which is considered a long stay.

Those who are going home can have long recoveries, coming home weak or on oxygen.

HaysMed receives referrals from 40 counties in Kansas.

The hospital has closed to transfers only twice in the last 14 years. In the month of November, HaysMed denied 103 transfers from other hospitals.

Harris said the closure has affected the hospital's ability to care for patients. HaysMed has always remained open for acute heart attack and stroke patients. However, when it closes for transfers, it stops accepting all other patients outside Ellis County.

"I think some of the rural areas felt like they were protected due to their geography from the virus," Harris said. "Clearly, that is not the case."

Dr. David Wild, vice president of performance improvement at the health system, said the issue with transfers is happening across the state, and it is meaning patients are waiting longer and transported farther for care.&nbsp;

"There is no doubt that there is an impact on patients across the community with diseases other than COVID," he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A couple of western Kansas counties still don't have mask mandates. Those counties have accounted for 30 of HaysMed's inpatients.

"I think the rural folks need to be cautious as well," Harris said. "Wear masks, try to social distance and don't gather in big groups and try to protect yourself so you don't get sick."

Harris said the continuing crisis has been difficult on local caregivers.&nbsp;

"People are dying of this illness," she said. "I see that being a strain for both the nursing staff and the providers. When you care for people for 10 plus days and the patients can't have family in the hospital, you become connected to those folks.&nbsp;

"We are in the business of healing people. I think that is a strain too. People are getting weary. People are strained and stressed and sad."

Kevin Myers, HaysMed infection prevention director, said all of the PPE caregivers have to wear makes it difficult to provide the human touch they are used to offering, which is a struggle for both patients and caregivers.

Clinic providers are also seeing a surge in COVID patients.

Ellis County had a 27 percent to 30 percent positive rate through November. Sixty to 100 people are being tested every day.

Although COVID numbers were lower Monday, Harris said that is only the result of testing being lower over the Thanksgiving weekend. She anticipated numbers will be up Wednesday and Friday and into the next week.

Myers said the upcoming cold and flu season will likely make caring for the community even more difficult, a factor that keeps him up at night.

Over half of the people reporting as COVID positive are unsure from whom they contracted the virus, Harris said.

"I ask the question, 'Have you been around someone?' but I don't know the question is all that important anymore at this point," she said, "because lots of people are just shocked because they didn't know they were around anyone who had been sick.

"I think you have to be careful in all settings now."

Myers said a pocket of people still don't want to believe COVID-19 is real.

"When it finally hits the home front, they have a lot of questions, " he said. "That is why it is important for us to be there."

Myers said he is still taking calls to answer questions that he thought would be common knowledge by now.&nbsp;

"It is like starting over on Day One with some people, but it is totally OK," he said. "I am here to help people get back up to speed because they have been suppressing it or denying it for so long."

Hays residents quickly expressed surprise on social media Tuesday following the announcement that a popular Hays restaurant will close its doors at the end of the year.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/451995af-5c56-4fb1-9508-1307dd091a3b">Gutch's Bar and Grill,&nbsp;111 W. Seventh, made the announcement on Facebook Tuesday.</a>

Many of the plans are continuing to be worked out, but owner&nbsp;Ken Gottschalk said Wednesday that another local business will expand into the space.

"Now is the time for me to do something if I am going to," he said. "So it's going to be Defiance Brewing Company Downtown."

Defiance Brewing opened at its current location at&nbsp;2050 Old U.S. 40 in 2013, later opening a small taproom.

"Since I am the president of Defiance, I thought, 'Well, let's just move it here,' " Gottschalk said. "I am the general manager at Defiance, so it all goes hand-in-hand."

The new establishment will offer food and pizza, as well as Defiance beer.

He said the move will bring something new and different downtown.

"I think it would be good for Defiance," he said. "Defiance has a good product and I think it will be easier to get to down here."

Many of the details are being worked out, but&nbsp;Gottschalk said a change will be good in the location.

"I've been here 16 years, so it's kind of time," he said. "And so I think it's Defiance time."

He said he will continue to be involved with the business, but in what capacity also remains to be worked out as plans solidify.

"The first thing is, is to get things done, so we are going to start working on it at the first of the year," Gottschalk said. "I want to make sure everybody understands that we are moving slowly, one step at a time."

'I think it's Defiance time': Brewery to expand to Gutch's location

Pet licenses for 2021 are now on sale in the Hays City Clerk's office.

Owned dogs and cats are required by city ordinance to have the licenses. Cost is $5 for spayed and neutered animals or $25 for unaltered pets.

Dangerous dogs, including pit bulls or dogs deemed dangerous by the court, must have proof of microchipping and a photo of the dog.  There is an additional fee of $50 for a dangerous dog.

"The city allows to March 1st to get the licenses without penalty," said Stan Moore, animal control officer. "After that, you can be penalized $10 a month up to five months or $50."

City offices are currently closed to the public due to the coronavirus, and pet parents will not be able to purchase their licenses in person.

Instead, the process requires a combination of email, postal mail and a phone call, according to Moore.

"You will have to email your proof of rabies certificate and spay/neuter information to the city clerk's office at cco@haysusa.com. Then you'll have to call them at 785-628-7300 with your billing information.&nbsp;

"Once they have all that, they will mail you your pet licenses," Moore explained.

A pet license on record with the city can help more quickly identify the owner of a lost pet.

Hansen Foundation grants $50K for temporary housing in Hays

Even though we approach this holiday season amidst the pandemic, I am constantly reminded of the power of always being joyful and thankful in all circumstances. Or, as Viktor Frankl said, “Everything can be taken from a man or a woman but one thing: the last of human freedoms to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”

Inspired by Viktor Frankl, and frankly, so many colleagues and community members, I would like to offer just a few observations of the blessings that have continued to propel Fort Hays State University forward this year.

Our “in-the-trench” outreach efforts from our faculty and staff care teams kept students enrolled. The contributions of countless caring hearts stocked our Tiger food pantry and supplemented the student emergency fund. All across campus, I continue to see an ethic of care that is distinctively FHSU.

All areas of campus have had to adjust operations to open and operate the campus in as safe and effective a manner as possible. From our facilities staff to our students, faculty and emergency team, we have worked collectively to mitigate the risk of transmission of the coronavirus in the classroom. Our own campus proactive steps – including social distancing, hand hygiene, use of face coverings, monitoring our personal health and making the thoughtful decision to stay home if we feel unwell –have been embraced. We have also carefully monitored our capacity to isolate and quarantine on-campus students. As a result, our campus remains open.

Our online graduate education programs saw enrollment growth with an increase of 90 students this fall. Online graduate education has increased nine of the last 10 years.

The Kelly Center provided a record-breaking 4,084 personal counseling sessions last year, in addition to services in the following areas: alcohol and drug counseling services, student accessibility issues through learning disability testing and accommodations and academic counseling and peer tutoring. This year, they are on schedule to set a new record of wrap-around support services. A grant is expanding the Kelly Center’s reach to assist students enrolled in online classes and Zoom sessions.

I am deeply appreciative of our Teaching Innovation and Learning Technologies staff, who continue to support both faculty and students with cutting-edge, engaging learning technologies. They have been working tirelessly, supporting Tigers throughout the United States and across the world – including making sure that students in China could access all of their class materials through their cell phones and creating tutorial videos in Mandarin to ensure students’ success.

The Higher Learning Commission approved a new master’s degree in athletic training. This is essential, as the industry standard now requires a master’s degree for entry-level professionals. We also launched online bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in social work. Both programs exceeded their first-year enrollment goals this fall, as did our expanding computer science program.

We have teams of colleagues working on new cybersecurity initiatives and studying future possibilities of how artificial intelligence can help drive student success.

COVID couldn’t stop students and parents from seeing the value of our Academy of Mathematics and Science. This early entry college program offers an unparalleled academic experience for gifted and talented high school students from our own backyard and to students from all over the world. We welcomed a new class of 37 juniors this year.

Every day I watch our new Fischli-Wills Center for Student Success, powered by philanthropy, come to life. The center, scheduled for completion by fall 2021, is a one-stop shop for student success. From academic and career support to student health and counseling, the three-story building attached to the Memorial Union will feature student services for mind, body and soul.

Our Tiger Auction for athletics was converted to a virtual event, and our fans did not let us down. Our philanthropists continued to fuel the success of our teams. Scholarships were honored, while coaches concentrated on meaningful practice sessions as well as structure and routine for the student-athletes. November arrived with the optimism of our student-athletes being able to return to play.

Despite the strains the pandemic placed on our community, an enduring point of pride remains the strong town-and-gown relationship we enjoy in Hays, America. Fort Hays State is blessed by a long legacy of strong leaders and a community that rallies its support around the university in many ways. Through it all, our caretaking of the present – while planning for the future – thrived.

The work we do matters. Like a pebble tossed in a pond, our impact ripples across families, communities and the world. Alphonse Karr said, “we can complain because rose bushes have thorns or rejoice because thorns have roses.” Amid an unprecedented year, I choose to rejoice – and remain forever grateful for the opportunity to work with my talented colleagues at this extraordinary university.

 </figure>Even though we approach this holiday season amidst the pandemic, I am constantly reminded of the power of always being joyful and thankful in all circumstances. Or, as Viktor Frankl said, “Everything can be taken from a man or a woman but one thing: the last of human freedoms to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”Inspired by Viktor Frankl, and frankly, so many colleagues and community members, I would like to offer just a few observations of the blessings that have continued to propel Fort Hays State University forward this year.Our “in-the-trench” outreach efforts from our faculty and staff care teams kept students enrolled. The contributions of countless caring hearts stocked our Tiger food pantry and supplemented the student emergency fund. All across campus, I continue to see an ethic of care that is distinctively FHSU.All areas of campus have had to adjust operations to open and operate the campus in as safe and effective a manner as possible. From our facilities staff to our students, faculty and emergency team, we have worked collectively to mitigate the risk of transmission of the coronavirus in the classroom. Our own campus proactive steps – including social distancing, hand hygiene, use of face coverings, monitoring our personal health and making the thoughtful decision to stay home if we feel unwell –have been embraced. We have also carefully monitored our capacity to isolate and quarantine on-campus students. As a result, our campus remains open.Our online graduate education programs saw enrollment growth with an increase of 90 students this fall. Online graduate education has increased nine of the last 10 years.The Kelly Center provided a record-breaking 4,084 personal counseling sessions last year, in addition to services in the following areas: alcohol and drug counseling services, student accessibility issues through learning disability testing and accommodations and academic counseling and peer tutoring. This year, they are on schedule to set a new record of wrap-around support services. A grant is expanding the Kelly Center’s reach to assist students enrolled in online classes and Zoom sessions.I am deeply appreciative of our Teaching Innovation and Learning Technologies staff, who continue to support both faculty and students with cutting-edge, engaging learning technologies. They have been working tirelessly, supporting Tigers throughout the United States and across the world – including making sure that students in China could access all of their class materials through their cell phones and creating tutorial videos in Mandarin to ensure students’ success.The Higher Learning Commission approved a new master’s degree in athletic training. This is essential, as the industry standard now requires a master’s degree for entry-level professionals. We also launched online bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in social work. Both programs exceeded their first-year enrollment goals this fall, as did our expanding computer science program.We have teams of colleagues working on new cybersecurity initiatives and studying future possibilities of how artificial intelligence can help drive student success.COVID couldn’t stop students and parents from seeing the value of our Academy of Mathematics and Science. This early entry college program offers an unparalleled academic experience for gifted and talented high school students from our own backyard and to students from all over the world. We welcomed a new class of 37 juniors this year.Every day I watch our new Fischli-Wills Center for Student Success, powered by philanthropy, come to life. The center, scheduled for completion by fall 2021, is a one-stop shop for student success. United Way Dine Out Days Raffle for restaurant gift cards

WICHITA&nbsp;–&nbsp;A California man was sentenced today to 8 years in federal prison for transporting fentanyl and heroin to Kansas, U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said Wednesday in a news release.

Mauricio Canas, 24, Bermuda Dunes, Calif., pleaded guilty to one count of interstate transportation in furtherance of drug trafficking and one count of using a phone in furtherance of drug trafficking. In his plea, Canas admitted he and a co-defendant were stopped in Thomas County for a traffic violation. In the car, troopers found more than 9 pounds of fentanyl and more than 8 pounds of heroin.

Investigators learned Canas was transporting the drugs from California to New York for distribution when he passed through Kansas. He used a phone to communicate with his contacts in New York.

Co-defendant&nbsp;Eduardo Arellano-Sanchez&nbsp;is set for sentencing Feb. 16.

McAllister commended the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Drug Enforcement Administration and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Katie Andrusak for their work on the case.

HPD Activity Log, Nov. 23-29

Few events in history are as universally known and revered as the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 and, next year, students from Fort Hays State University will help commemorate the 80th anniversary of the day that will live in infamy during a special trip — and they are inviting anyone that would like to join to come along.

The Fort Hays Singers, under the care of the director of choirs, Terry Crull will perform during the events during their 5 day trip beginning Dec. 4, 2021.

While there they will perform with
other musical groups from around the U.S., but the group will also carry the banner for the region as the only group asked to perform from Kansas.

Crull said no groups from Nebraska
and Missouri are making the trip either.

"We are kind of
representing the Midwest region,” he said.“We are excited about
the chance to sing there, to represent our state and the Midwest region, to
travel to Hawaii … and to represent our state and our veterans."

While the trip itself is special for the department, it is also is a much-needed light at the end of the tunnel for the group that has had limited opportunities to perform as COVID-19 hampered their season.

“Its been a weird year
for us in the music department,” Crull said.

Even rehearsals have been impacted, with much being done virtually.&nbsp;

So when a familiar travel agency presented the opportunity to perform, Crull jumped on it.

The arrangements
are being handled by a company the group has used previously, during a trip to
Austria three years ago.

“They called us and
said we want you to be a part of this,” Crull said. He said the FHSU group was their first choice to represent Kansas.

"We are excited about that,” he said.“This tour company has
been phenomenal to work with."

While some of the details remain to be worked out, the group is set to perform with a larger group during the commemoration concert scheduled for Dec. 7 at the U.S.S. Arizona memorial and will perform at other locations during the trip.

“We have got three,
maybe four, performances as well as the ocean and other sightseeing in Hawaii
(planned),” Crull said.

During the visit, they also plan to present memorial items, such as a wreath or quilt, to honor the Kansans who served in the Armed Forces.

Longtime group accompanist Pam McGowne is spearheading that effort, and Crull said they are asking for anyone that knows of a Kansan who served during the war to reach out to be included in the list of veterans to be remembered.

He also said 44 FHSU alumni live in
Hawaii, so a meet-and-greet is working to be arranged during the trip with the
alumni office.

As exciting as the trip will be for the group, securing funds to travel can be difficult for college students — and so a program has been created that will allow others to travel with the groups, making the cost lower for everyone and allowing for those that may want to support the group during the trip to do so easily.

“Right now, we have
lots of room,” Crull said. 

He said 20 to 24 students will travel as a part of the singing group, but the more who sign up to travel with them the lower the individual cost.

“Right now, I'm
estimating $2,500 per student or per traveler,” Crull said.“We want to take a 30 to 40 (person) entourage of non-singing members with us because that will lower the cost for
everyone,” Crull said.

members have already signed up, he said."The word is out that
we want to get people to join us,” Crull said.While COVID-19 is still impacting travel now, with the trip more than a year away, the concern that it will derail any plans is minimal. But, Crull said, if something unexpected creates a need to cancel, he is confident the agency planning the trip will work with participants to return already collected funds.He also said university officials have completely signed off on the trip with the length of
time between now and the trip.“In fact, I hope they
go along,” Crull said.The Fort Hays State University Foundation is also assisting the students by actively seeking donations for the trip.“If you want to
recognize that my college kids are not terribly wealthy and will have a long
hard year of raising funds for this trip and would want to help us, the foundation at Fort Hays is taking donations to the choral travel fund specifically
for this trip,” Crull said.“Everything that gets sent will benefit the students.”Those funds he said, will directly assist those students with an unforgettable experience.“I told the kids
already,” Cruell said. “If we do a patriotic number like ‘America the Beautiful’
or ‘God Bless the USA’ it’s going to be heart-rendering, it’s going to be hard to
sing. When you think about what happened there and the thousands of people that
lost their lives on that one day.
