Three-day weather outlook

Late October to early November is the most effective time to control broadleaf weeds in lawns. Dandelions usually produce a flush of new plants in late September, and the winter annual weeds henbit and chickweed should have germinated in October.

These young plants are small and easily controlled with herbicides such as 2,4-D or combination products (Trimec, Weed-B-Gon, Weed-Out) that contain 2,4-D, MCPP, and Dicamba. Even established dandelions are more easily controlled now than in the spring because they are actively moving materials from the top portion of the plant to the roots in the fall. &nbsp;Herbicides will translocate to the roots as well and will kill the plant from the roots up.​

Choose a day that is 50 degrees or higher. The better the weed is growing, the more weed killer will be moved from the leaves to the roots. Cold temperatures will slow this process, but these products will still work at lower temperatures.

Weed Free Zone (also sold under the name of Speed Zone) contains the three active ingredients mentioned above, plus carfentrazone. It will give a quicker response than the other products mentioned especially as temperatures move below 50 degrees. FICK: Controlling broadleaf weeds in lawns

Ellis County Commission candidate Lisa Boyd on Tuesday pleaded not guilty
to shooting a Roman candle at her neighbors and violating a protection order.

Boyd, Victoria, was back in court via Zoom for arraignment in Ellis County District Court.

During the hearing, Boyd pleaded not guilty to three felonies
and three misdemeanor charges in two separate cases.

The three felony charges — two counts of aggravated battery
and one count criminal threat — stem from a July 4 incident where
she is alleged to have shot a Roman candle at her neighbors, including a
teenager.

The three violation of a protection order charges are  misdemeanors.

Boyd has been in jail since the July 4 incident
and has had several requests to be released on bond denied. But at Tuesday’s
hearing, Chief Judge Glenn Braun granted Boyd’s bond, with restrictions.

An official with High Plains Mental Health Center testified
that she did not believe that Boyd was a danger to herself or others. She has
agreed to continue working with High Plains Mental Health.

As a condition of Boyd’s release, she will live in Russell
and only be allowed to go to her residence in Victoria once in the morning and
once in the evening to take care of her pets. 

When Boyd was able to set up her residence in Russell, she would
be released on her own recognizance — meaning she did not have to post bail. If she violates terms of her release, she will be taken back into custody and
held on $70,000 bond.

During the hearing, Eric James was seen recording the
hearing, which is not allowed by the court, and he and Boyd’s daughter were
removed from the hearing.

They had been called as witnesses by the defense to discuss
where Boyd could stay upon her release.

Braun said James had made comments in the past against him that could have been considered threats and would not put him under oath. 

Boyd will be staying with James in Russell and the two are
not allowed to be at Boyd’s Victoria home at the same time.

A pretrial hearing was scheduled for a later date.

Boyd is running for Ellis County Commission as a Democrat in the Third District, a seat is currently held by Republican Dean Haselhorst. The
two will face off in the November primary election.

Eagle Radio Online Auction continues

You'll never know until you try — and for area
residents this weekend, trying something new is literally on the menu.

At 3 p.m. Saturday at the Gobbler’s Roost cabin in Cedar
Bluff State Park, dishes made with wild game will be enjoyed in a potluck style
dinner during the 27th annual event.

“It’s more of an introduction to eating different kinds of cuisine,”
said Steve Hausler, event organizer.

Hausler started the event with Rick Cunningham after moving
to Hays to join the staff at the Hays Daily News in 1992.

“Basically, we invited a lot of friends that like to hunt and
fish and have a chance to try out different wild game recipes,” said Hausler, longtime photo editor at the newspaper. “That’s
the beginning of this event.”

From there, it grew as more people were invited to taste wild
game

“Anyone from your average hunter and fisherman to dignitaries
that have never even thought to try wild game come — and they enjoy it,” Hausler
said.

Even those that are a little gunshy about eating wild game
dishes can enjoy good conversation and company, he said.

The event is open to anyone, with attendees asked to bring a
dish, even if it does not include wild game.

“We have always had this idea that we open it up to anyone
that wants to come, and we have never turned anybody away,” Hausler said.

In previous years, that has included curious people at the
park, intrigued by the signs the day of the event.

“We get a lot of takers, a lot of people that have never
been to anything like that before and just thought it sounded like fun and they
wanted to try it,” Hausler said. “We have had a lot of people that don’t
generally hunt or fish, but have been curious and have attended our events over
the years. Really that’s the whole idea — to try and introduce some of the recipes
to people who don’t ordinarily eat wild game.”

Over the years, he recalls a variety of unique dishes – and ingredients — making their way to the table.

“I think on average we try to experiment with different types
of game and different recipes,” Hausler said.

Standard Kansas game like deer, pheasant, quail, wild turkey,
duck are common dishes, he said.

But sometimes the fare gets a little more exotic.

“We have had people bring alligator, elk, antelope,
rattlesnake, bobcat and beaver,” he said.

Crawfish and a variety of local fish dishes have also been
represented.

Over the years, he said enough recipes have been introduced that
he believes he could write a cookbook with the unique recipes.

This year, Hausler plans to bring some dishes that live up to
the exotic moniker.

One dish — a rattlesnake dip, with cream cheese and chives
— is sure to be interesting enough to draw attention.

In this case, the meat came from a nuisance animal, which he
helped secure.

“The neighbor had one in the garage, called us and said 'We
need help,' ” Hausler said.

The trick to rattlesnake meat, he said, is boiling the meat,
pulling it off the bone and dicing it.

He also plans to bring cold-smoked rainbow trout and fried bluegill fish tacos with pico de gallo.

Rounding out his dishes, he will prepare bacon-wrapped Dove
poppers and, if time allows, pan-fried quail and pheasant on top of fettuccine
and steamed veggies with a cream sauce.

“We get really elaborate with the recipes,” Hausler said. “But
there is a lot of common staples at these events too. And, who knows? There will
always be a surprise.”

With the ongoing pandemic, he is not sure what
turnout will look like this year, but in previous years, up to 50 people have joined in the meal.

Hausler said during the event he does not want to enforce any
requirements on visitors, but said they will be as cautious as possible, and
understands if some choose not to attend.

“If this isn’t the year to come, let’s get past this virus
and come next year,” he said. “I can tell you that it happens every year and we
will continue to do it as long as I am kicking and, if this isn’t the year to
come and enjoy it with us ... it happens in the fall of every year.

“Be my Facebook friend and you will find out about next year’s
event,” Hausler said.

For those who make it this year or next, he said the
people you meet might by surprising.

“You just never know who you are going to rub shoulders with
at these events — from your average bricklayer to your family physician,” he said.

“Just come join us,” Hausler added. “Come on up, tell us you
are new and we will basically show them around.”

Not your average meal: Area residents set to gather for wild game feed

MANHATTAN — More than 120 students attending&nbsp;<a href="https://online.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Kansas State University Online</a>&nbsp;received scholarships this fall semester ranging in amounts from $600 to $1,500 each and totaling $68,600. K-State Global Campus, which oversees K-State Online, works hard to offer scholarships to its online students, who are predominately adults attending classes part time while balancing work and family responsibilities. Hays, Goodland students receive K-State Global Campus scholarships

TOPEKA — Each summer, Ranchland Trust of Kansas (RTK) invites amateur and professional photographers of all ages to submit photos that showcase the mission of RTK and Kansas’ ranching heritage. The mission of RTK is “To preserve Kansas’ ranching heritage and open spaces for future generations through the conservation of working landscapes.”

Dave Leiker of Emporia was the grand prize winner in this year’s contest. His photo was taken at the Vestring Ranch south of Cassoday when he was on assignment for Kansas! Magazine.

“After I was let out of a pickup truck at the edge of the pasture, I walked across the grassland, moving quietly into their group as I studied their response. When I was low and quiet curiosity would draw them in toward me. If I stood and moved toward them, they would move away. Soon I felt like I could orchestrate their movements to get variety and action for the camera,” said Leiker.

He was drawn to a bond between two of the horses and watched for expressive moments as he captured his grand prize winning image.

“I found it beautiful how one pair moved together, a couple times displaying the head-press at the heart of this photograph. It was a good moment and I'm glad I could share it this way,” Leiker added.

Crystal Socha of Augusta won the Fan Favorite category by receiving 663 votes on RTK’s Facebook page. Her winning photo, titled “Caught in the Storm” was taken in Morris County. The photograph truly depicts what it is like to be cowboy for a day.

Socha said, “We were moving cattle this spring to summer pasture. We got hit by a massive storm while on a couple thousand acres. It was not only pouring rain, but high winds, lighting and hail.”

A record number of photographs were submitted to the contest this year. The panel of judges narrowed the selection down to a top 25 for the Fan Favorite category voting on Facebook. All other category winners were chosen by the panel of judges, along with RTK and Wolfe’s Camera representatives. The Facebook album was able to reach over 43,000 Facebook users and nearly 6,000 votes were cast for the Fan Favorite category. Thank you to all who viewed and voted for these beautiful Kansas photos.

Additional winners in each category were: Landscape – Tony Ifland, Cedar; Livestock – Marisa Betts, Russell; People – Collin Forrest, Conway Springs; KLA Member – Jake Pannbacker, Washington; Youth – Isaac Wilber, Wamego; and Honorable Mentions – Greg Kramos, Manhattan; Mike Scheufler, Augusta; and Scott Bean, Manhattan. The Fort Hays State University American Democracy Project provides numerous civic and political engagement activities that challenge and encourage students, faculty, staff and community members to find their place and make a difference. FHSU ADP values the importance of presenting unbiased information to students, faculty, staff and community members.&nbsp;

ADP’s “Let’s Civil Discourse” event is an opportunity for students, faculty, staff, and others to address and debate issues in a civil manner. It will also be a place where proper decorum as well as common ground building will happen and will be reminded of throughout the entirety of the session.&nbsp;

FHSU ADP to host virtual event on civil discourse

October is noted as Indoor Air Quality Awareness month. This is such an important topic so today seems like the perfect time to share some updated information on this subject.

We spend the majority of our time inside; 90 percent of it, in fact. However, mold, mildew, carbon monoxide, tobacco smoke, radon, dust, asbestos and other indoor air pollutants can make some days you spend inside miserable. Indoor air pollution is a high contributor to illnesses. These pollutants cause acute and chronic problems such as allergies, asthma, headaches, nausea and even cancer. Americans lose millions of dollars each year in medical costs, lost workdays and decreased productivity due to illnesses caused by poor indoor air quality.

Indoor air quality can actually be worse than outdoor air quality. Many buildings are built or remodeled so tightly that fresh air is prevented from entering and circulating. That is complicated by the use of many furnishings, appliances, products and decorations that can negatively affect indoor air quality. Of course, the obvious signs of poor indoor air quality include unusual or noticeable odors. This may be attributed to moving into a new home, using new furniture, or using hobby products. Feeling noticeably healthier when you are outside is a definite clue that the air you are breathing inside your home may not be healthy.

Factors that impact air quality include lack of air movement, dirty or faulty heating or air conditioning equipment, damaged flue pipes or chimneys, unvented combustion for fossil fuel appliances, excessive humidity and the presence of mold and mildew. Many common household items can pollute the air as well. With cooler temps in the forecast, now is the perfect time to make sure your furnace is working properly, so that carbon monoxide is not an issue.&nbsp;

Remember too, that now is a good time to test the radon level in your home. We have short term radon test kits available for $6.50 at both the Hays and Great Bend offices. It’s a small price to pay for peace of mind knowing the radon level in your home.

All of the windy days we have had lately can certainly create an uptick in allergy symptoms inside as well as outside. Let’s hope for some rain to settle the dust soon! But not too much rain at one time, because then the mold questions will start coming in!

Choosing the best cover crop for a particular cropping system can be difficult. Many factors are involved when selecting the most appropriate cover crop. The <a href="http://mccc.msu.edu/">Midwest Cover Crops Council</a> (MCCC) has released an improved <a href="http://mccc.msu.edu/covercroptool/">cover crop selection tool</a> to help farmers determine the best types of cover crops for their fields. The MCCC is made up of representatives from 12 Midwest states, the Canadian province of Ontario, and select universities, including Kansas and Kansas State University.

With this tool, users select their state/province and county and then select the goals they have for cover crops — erosion control, nitrogen scavenger, fighting weeds, providing forage, etc. They also can provide information about the cash crops they are planting and drainage data for their fields, which is optional. The tool offers the best cover crop options for the specified conditions. Clicking on the cover crops brings up data sheets that offer more information about each crop, including seeding rates, termination methods, performance and cultural traits, and more. The tool is very easy to use and can provide as much or as little information as you choose.

The updated tool includes more accurate seeding dates for each county based on 30-year National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration frost date data; changes to seeding dates and rates to align with new research; and is now mobile-friendly and complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

CAMPBELL: Updated cover crop selection tool available

The Ellis County Health Department on Wednesday reported the average number of new coronavirus cases per day in the last seven days held steady at 12.

The department also announced an additional coronavirus-related death, bringing the total to 14.

On Oct. 2, the Hays City Commission voted to extend the ordinance requiring face coverings until the seven-day new case average was five or fewer for 14 straight days.

There were 24 new cases of COVID-19 identified in Ellis County since Monday. There are currently 125 active cases, including nine active hospitalizations, and 1,096 recovered cases.

The seven-day average of percent of positive tests rose from 17.8 percent on Monday to 19.9 percent on Wednesday.

Since reporting began, there have been 1,235 cases of coronavirus identified in the county, including 14 deaths.

NOTE:&nbsp;"New cases" reflects cases reported by the Ellis County Health Department between regular reporting periods of Monday, Wednesday and Friday. "Total cases" reflects all cases reported by the department. Because of delayed test results, total cases might include cases prior to the previous reporting period, so the figures might not necessarily correspond.

HUTCHINSON – Winning exhibitors at the 88th&nbsp;Kansas Junior Livestock Show (KJLS) earned premiums, while others were presented scholarships for excelling academically, in community service and in 4-H/FFA.

The largest youth livestock show in Kansas featured 661 showmen from 93 counties, who exhibited 1,395 head of livestock, including 108 market steers, 269 breeding heifers, 153 market hogs, 174 breeding gilts, 214 market lambs, 201 breeding ewes, 140 market goats and 136 commercial doe kids.

The statewide event was held October 2-4 at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson.

CORRECTION: Ellis County winners in annual KJLS contest

Ever since he was a kid, Sgt. Nolan Weiser knew he wanted a career in law enforcement. After graduating from Plainville High School, he promptly set out to make his dream come true.&nbsp; He began his career with Hays Police Department in 2015, shortly after his 21st birthday.&nbsp;

It didn’t take him long to realize the job was much more than he’d realized.

“I got the full experience, and I didn’t fully understand what it was going to be like to be a police officer,” Weiser said. “If you would have told me all the stories, the stuff that I would have dealt with before I was a cop – I might have said, ‘Hey, I don’t want to do this.’ I didn’t realize the seriousness of it.”

The first serious incident he responded to was a trench collapse in downtown Hays, which caused two fatalities in 2016. Weiser was still in training and was one of the first officers on scene. He spoke of the shock he felt as he realized the magnitude of what had happened.

“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I remember I saw another officer, he had a tear rolling down his eye,” he said. “That was my first really major incident. I didn’t really know how to process it.”

High Plains Mental Health Center had counselors on the scene and provided a Critical Incident Stress Management debriefing for first responders shortly after that event. Weiser was asked to attend, but said he was too shy to speak about his experience at that time.&nbsp;

A short time later, Nolan moved to Rooks County and started his “dream job” of becoming a K-9 sergeant with the sheriff’s office. He has been with his canine, a German shepherd named Koda, since 2017, and said it was ideal returning to the community he grew up in. That also made the job more emotional, he said, because he personally knows many people in the county.

His life was forever changed on a snowy spring day in 2018. It was a Sunday night and he was home on a break from his shift. A call came through for a welfare check, which is not uncommon. But that call ultimately led officers to the scene of a violent homicide.

Nolan was one of the first on scene and described it as the most horrible thing he had ever witnessed.&nbsp;

“I remember the ambulance pulling off. It was a horrific thing to hear that ambulance at 4 in the morning, snow was on the ground and it was so still,” he said. “They pulled off and there were so many emotions going through me. I remember thinking, ‘I don’t want to be here. I don’t want to be dealing with this anymore.’ ”

In the coming weeks, Nolan and his friends and family would notice more sudden changes in his mood and behavior. He began experiencing paranoid thoughts, and was afraid to walk outside his house alone to get dog food for Koda – part of his nightly routine. Though he doesn’t particularly like the taste of alcohol and had never been much of a drinker, his alcohol consumption was increasing.

“I don’t like drinking for the most part. But half the time I just started drinking because I wanted to feel better,” he said. “I didn’t want to think about it.”

He lost interest in his usual activities and responsibilities, and began to feel “numb” while on shift for work. On his days off, he would sleep all day, lay around the house doing nothing or begin drinking.

His wife was pregnant at the time with their first child, but Nolan didn’t feel excited anymore.

As the days dragged on, Nolan became aware his struggle was affecting his loved ones. It was affecting his marriage, and even Koda became agitated. As Nolan continued to experience sleepless nights, the canine would sit up with him on high alert, frequently growling with his hair standing on end. That added to Nolan’s anxiety, so he reached out to Koda’s trainer.

“He said, ‘I know what you’re going through.’ That dog is so close to you, he knows something’s not right with you,” Nolan said. “Dogs can be simple-minded, but they’re smart. That dog had an image of me, normal images of me smiling, happy, playful, and he was looking at me and seeing something wrong.”

His wife was supportive and often encouraged him to get help, and Nolan eventually spoke to his priest and to a peer support officer at Hays Police Department. He also participated in another Critical Incident Stress Management debriefing provided by High Plains Mental Health Center. That helped for a while, but it eventually became clear professional counseling was needed.

&nbsp;His supervisors at work noticed Nolan “wasn’t the same person” and also began encouraging professional help. The final straw, Weiser said, was when his wife begged him to get help – if not for himself, for the sake of their family and their baby daughter on the way.

He hesitantly returned to High Plains Mental Health Center, and remembers feeling embarrassed and afraid. A therapist at High Plains told Nolan he was experiencing symptoms consistent with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.&nbsp;

PTSD, also known as Post Traumatic Stress Injury, affects an estimated 8 million U.S. adults every year, and about 7 percent of the population will experience PTSD at some point in their lives. The illness can affect anyone, but is more common among first responders and military due to prolonged or repeated exposure to trauma and extreme stress.

He soon began regular counseling appointments with Amy Bird, an outpatient therapist and integrated care specialist at High Plains.&nbsp;

“After our first session, it started to get a lot better. She really helped me through some things,” he said. “As time got on, things started to get better at home. I quit picturing stuff. She started helping me with some coping stuff. … One thing she gave me was a different perspective.”

Amy assured him he was having “a normal reaction to an abnormal event,” and that helped tremendously, Nolan said.&nbsp;

“If I would have had no reaction, that would be unusual,” he said.

Mental health problems are common. An estimated 1 in 4 U.S. adults will experience a mental health problem at some point in their lives, but only about 41 percent of those experiencing symptoms will seek treatment. The median amount of time people wait before seeking help is 10 years, Bird said.

“We know that treatment helps and we know early intervention is key, but one of the factors that prevents people from seeking treatment is the stigma associated with mental health problems and treatment,” Bird said. “As Nolan’s story illustrates, mental health problems can impact every area of a person’s life and not only affect the person suffering from the disorder, but also family members, friends and colleagues.

“I am so grateful to Nolan for having the courage to share his experiences and for his efforts to decrease stigma. I hope that it helps others struggling with a mental health problem to realize that help is available, there is hope and recovery is possible.”

After attending regular therapy sessions, Nolan has been able to recover from the trauma and get his life back. Since the incident in 2018, Weiser has worked to better himself, which was encouraged during therapy. He’s now a field training officer, and speaks candidly about mental health with his trainees, encouraging them to seek help when it’s needed.

“It’s not easy,” he says of the job. “Life’s not easy. But there’s resources there to help you.”

His department is working to normalize mental health, and Nolan says he wants to do whatever he can to reduce stigma around trauma and mental illness – particularly among first responders.

He and his wife are now expecting twins – one boy and one girl – and he can’t wait to play sports with his son. And his bond with Koda is stronger than ever.&nbsp;

“When I first came (to High Plains), I didn’t want anybody to know. The only person who knew was my wife. My life was at an all-time low, and now it’s so much better. I’m very thankful for that,” he said.&nbsp;

“I love law enforcement, I love my job, I love working with Koda. But if I wouldn’t have ever come here, I don’t think I’d still be in law enforcement today.”

After graduating from Plainville High School, he promptly set out to make his dream come true.&nbsp; He began his career with Hays Police Department in 2015, shortly after his 21st birthday.&nbsp;It didn’t take him long to realize the job was much more than he’d realized.“I got the full experience, and I didn’t fully understand what it was going to be like to be a police officer,” Weiser said. “If you would have told me all the stories, the stuff that I would have dealt with before I was a cop – I might have said, ‘Hey, I don’t want to do this.’ I didn’t realize the seriousness of it.”The first serious incident he responded to was a trench collapse in downtown Hays, which caused two fatalities in 2016. Weiser was still in training and was one of the first officers on scene. He spoke of the shock he felt as he realized the magnitude of what had happened.“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I remember I saw another officer, he had a tear rolling down his eye,” he said. “That was my first really major incident. I didn’t really know how to process it.”High Plains Mental Health Center had counselors on the scene and provided a Critical Incident Stress Management debriefing for first responders shortly after that event. Weiser was asked to attend, but said he was too shy to speak about his experience at that time.&nbsp;A short time later, Nolan moved to Rooks County and started his “dream job” of becoming a K-9 sergeant with the sheriff’s office. He has been with his canine, a German shepherd named Koda, since 2017, and said it was ideal returning to the community he grew up in. That also made the job more emotional, he said, because he personally knows many people in the county.His life was forever changed on a snowy spring day in 2018. It was a Sunday night and he was home on a break from his shift. A call came through for a welfare check, which is not uncommon. But that call ultimately led officers to the scene of a violent homicide.Nolan was one of the first on scene and described it as the most horrible thing he had ever witnessed.&nbsp;“I remember the ambulance pulling off. It was a horrific thing to hear that ambulance at 4 in the morning, snow was on the ground and it was so still,” he said. “They pulled off and there were so many emotions going through me. Officer shares mental health struggles: 'There’s resources there to help you'

For decades, Special Collections and Archives at Fort Hays State University’s Forsyth Library has been developing and preserving&nbsp;research&nbsp;collections&nbsp;that tell the story of the cultural histories of the Great Plains with a concentration on central and western Kansas communities.

A recent donation from FHSU alum Tim Johnson completes the Tim Johnson postcard collection, which&nbsp;​contains&nbsp;thousands of photographic and “real photo” postcards. The cards were created by renowned national photographers, such as Hal Reid, traveling lensmen, and local photographers who captured unique moments of ordinary Americans in turn-of-the-century Kansas communities through the Great Depression.

<a>Deborah Ludwig, Dean of Forsyth Library, elaborated: “These remarkable historical postcards provide a window through which we can better know and understand the people, places, and events that came before us and the many ways in which our state and our communities have grown and changed over the previous century.”</a>

This collection captures moments frozen in time, telling the story&nbsp;of main streets, store interiors, horse-drawn wagons, industries, and neighborhoods that evolved and devolved throughout a span of several decades. It includes&nbsp;several rare postcards, such as&nbsp;“Hamburger Gene”, one of Johnson’s prized pieces and only one of six cards known to exist.

<a>Brian Gribben, coordinator of Government Documents and Special Collections, explained, “we have to remember that popular photography was still in its infancy, so these real photo postcards provide rare glimpses into what everyday life was like in these communities. Viewing pieces of our collective past in such an unfiltered form is invaluable as it creates opportunities that textual sources cannot.”</a>

Johnson’s interest in collecting unique Kansas memorabilia goes back to childhood. Born in Falun, Kansas, Johnson discovered early 1900s hometown memorabilia in the basement of his father’s bank which sparked a fascination in Kansas history. Over a 40-year period, Johnson’s collection expanded to include postage, postcards, photographs, maps and letters from all across Kansas.

Johnson wanted a place where his collections could be preserved and shared with others. Nestled among many of the Main Street America communities represented in the postcards and having a strong mission for preserving the history of the Great Plains, Forsyth Library is now the home for many of Tim Johnson’s collections.

“It’s like sending the last of my kids off to college. But I know they’ll be well taken care of, I can still come and visit, and they’ll benefit everyone,” shared Johnson, a 1982 FHSU graduate and a long-time benefactor of the library.&nbsp;

Forsyth Library is&nbsp;processing the collection to ensure the postcards are discoverable and taking thorough preservation and conservation steps to make these historical artifacts available to researchers in the future.&nbsp;Johnson’s unique collections enrich Forsyth Library’s concentration of unique materials about Great Plains Research and will be incorporated into course instruction, the library’s Digital Collections, and future exhibits that support the educational and research mission of Fort Hays State University and the broader community.

“Tim Johnson has been a true friend to researchers and students at Fort Hays State University and throughout the entire state of Kansas through his series of donations to Forsyth Library’s Special Collections.&nbsp;Tim’s passion for history and his trust in our library to preserve this impressive collection for the enjoyment of future generations is deeply appreciated,” Ludwig commented.

In addition to preserving the history of the Great Plains, FHSU’s Special Collections also has collections concentrating around classic children’s literature, ethnic studies of the settlers of Central and Western Kansas, military history, rare books, and university history.
