Kan. —&nbsp;The Internal Revenue Service recently announced that they will start accepting returns for the 2020 tax year next month.

"This year, we had to push the date back to February 12," said spokesperson Michael Devine. "That's the date we're going to start processing tax returns. The law was passed in December on the 27th that changed how we do some things and it required additional programming and testing of our system. In order to make sure that we get it right on our end, we pushed the date back to give our folks more time. A lot of these changes had to do with the Recovery Rebate Credit that you'll file on your 2020 return to claim it if you didn't get the economic impact payment, but you can still file if you've got all your documents."

However, there is no hurry to file this year. The deadline is normal, but the processing window is smaller.

"We aren't even going to start processing returns until February 12," Devine said. "Make sure you have all of the documents. Do that return one time. If you do think you made a mistake and you have to file an amended return, wait until your first tax return is processed. If you file that amended return, you're going to have two 1040s in the system at the same time. It's going to look to our system like tax fraud, both of them are going to bounce out of the system and any refund that you were expecting is going to be delayed until we work it out."

Also, as has been the case in previous years, those with certain tax credits they are eligible for will have their returns delayed a little while.

"That includes the Earned Income Tax Credit," Devine said. "Last year, about 174,000 in Kansas got over $400 million in benefits. By law, those refunds, the entire refund has to be held until February 15. If you get everything and you file before we start processing returns, as soon as those come through, it will probably be the 15th and then that money will go out."

IRS: Tax returns to be accepted beginning Feb. 12, EITC refunds still delayed

Hays Assistant City Manager Collin Biesler has declared the city of Hays to be under a Phase 1 Winter Storm Traffic Emergency. 

During a Phase 1 Winter Storm Traffic Emergency, it is unlawful to park a vehicle on any street designated as an emergency snow route.

The Hays Public Works Department and Hays Police Department are requesting your assistance with snow removal along emergency snow routes. Please take the appropriate measures and move your vehicle from the snow route at this time. 

Should you take no action and allow your vehicle to remain parked on an emergency snow route, you risk receiving a citation and/or having your vehicle towed at your expense. 

This Phase 1 Winter Storm Traffic Emergency shall remain in effect until such time that the Hays City Manager deems the Winter Storm Traffic Emergency terminated.

Since winter precipitation continues to fall and conditions are expected to worsen through the day, the Hays Police Department is asking that motorists avoid travel if at all possible. Those that must travel are advised to do so with caution and are encouraged to give themselves extra time to reach their destination. Please remember to drive slow, pay attention to vehicles in front of you, and allow for extra stopping distance. The public’s cooperation is greatly appreciated throughout this winter storm.

City declares Phase 1 Winter Storm Traffic Emergency; no vehicles on snow routes

UPDATE at 9:14 a.m.: Power has been restored to the entire city of Russell.

&nbsp;The city of Russell is experiencing a problem at the city's south feed at 8:53 a.m. The cause is currently unknown. Crews are enroute. Multiple areas of Russell have been affected. A 20 -30 minute outage is estimated.

The snow began falling late Sunday night in Hays as a Winter Storm Warning was issued by the National Weather Service in Dodge City and is in effect until 6 p.m. Monday.

The forecast calls for four to eight inches of snow today.

With heavy snow still falling at 8 a.m., the K-State Agricultural Research Center reported three inches of snow on the ground, yielding 0.36 inch of moisture. It's the first moisture recorded in Hays in 2021.&nbsp;

The <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/74a037be-ff32-4d93-9d73-4a17332bfe8d">three-day weather forecast</a> calls for a little more snow on Tuesday.&nbsp;

Snow brings first moisture of 2021 to Hays 

TOPEKA – Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.8 percent in December. This was a decrease from 5.1 percent in November and an increase from 3.1 percent in December 2019.

“The unemployment rate fell in December, but remains significantly higher than the pre-pandemic rate,” said Acting Secretary Brett Flachsbarth. “The federal unemployment benefit programs that initially expired on December 26th were extended and the Kansas Department of Labor is currently evaluating guidelines from the United States Department of Labor and working to implement these CARES Act extensions and bring much-needed relief to eligible claimants.”

After increasing to 4 percent in November, the Ellis County jobless rate fell to 2.6 percent in December. Only Russell, Rooks and Graham counties broke the 3 percent threshold in northwest Kansas, with several counties posting jobless rates below 2 percent — all at or near pre-COVID-19 levels.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates indicate total Kansas nonfarm jobs increased by 2,300 from November. Private sector jobs, a subset of total nonfarm jobs, increased by 4,500 from the previous month, while government decreased by 2,200.

“The private sector added 4,500 jobs in December. Multiple industries contributed to this growth, with the largest gains in the retail trade industry,” said Labor Economist Emilie Doerksen. “Some of these gains were offset by a decline in the accommodation and food services industry, which has been significantly impacted by the pandemic.”

Since December 2019, Kansas seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have declined by 60,200. This change is due to a decrease of 45,100 private sector jobs and 15,100 government jobs.

BLS revised seasonally adjusted preliminary total nonfarm jobs estimates for November upward by 500 jobs, from 1,365,000 to 1,365,500. Seasonally adjusted private sector jobs were revised upward by 1,100 jobs, from 1,117,100 to 1,118,200.

The January 2021 Labor Report will be released March 5.

TOPEKA - Washburn University has announced its President's List and Dean's List honorees for the fall 2020 semester. To qualify for the President's List, a student must complete at least 12 hours of graded credits and earn a semester grade point average of 4.0.

Kade Urban, Hays, is one of more than 600 students who qualified for the President's List.

To qualify for the Dean's List, a student must be enrolled in 12 hours of graded credits and earn a semester grade point average of 3.4 to 3.99.

More than 100 developmentally disabled individuals were honored during the Shine Thru Drive Thru Promenade Parade in downtown Hays on Saturday.

COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the annual Night to Shine dance.

In years past, the Night to Shine prom sponsored by the Tim Tebow foundation has included 800 to 1,000 people gathering at Celebration Community Church.&nbsp;

Promenade guests received goodie bags at a stop at the Hays Aquatic Park. This included a crown or tiara for each guest. A Night to Shine tradition has been to crown each participant a queen or king for the night.

Community members gathered along Main Street to cheer on the participants, including Fort Hays State University cheerleaders and students as well as Victor E. Tiger.

Night to Shine cruise celebrates developmentally disabled

Despite the rather feisty name of Hays’ newest gym, Wild
Style Kickboxing, 1011 W. 27th, No. 5, it’s all about getting up and active, according to owner Steven Wilkinson.

The gym formally opened recently but helping others to
achieve their fitness goals has been a central part of Wilkinson’s life far
longer.

His martial arts story begins in 2012 while he was living in
his hometown of Great Bend, training at Iron Cobra Martial Arts. 

“That's where my journey really started,” Wilkinson said. 

Ultimately, he found a gym in the region that helped launch
his fighting career.

And over the last four years as an active competitor in combat
sports, he's won several titles along the way.

While training himself, he began working with friends,
training them at his home.

“Before I knew it, I had more and more people interested or
wanting to show up and get in shape — to change their life to a more active and
healthier lifestyle, up and moving and doing something,” Wilkinson said.

He said boxing and kickboxing have becoming more mainstream
as well and with Hays being a college town, self-defense knowledge is frequently
sought in the city.

“A lot of women have taken an interest in what we have going
on,” Wilkinson said.

So, over the summer, he was actively training more than a
dozen people out of his home. After being pursued about winter training, he began
the process of securing a location.

“I didn’t realize it was going to be as big as it was,” Wilkinson
said. “But we wanted to put a place together where people could train and get
their life back.”

Training and the preparing for fights, he said, helped him
get his life on track and now he hopes to share that with others.

“I literally had to fight my way to a better life,” he said.
“Now I can do it constructively, and this has helped me keep my life on track
and keep a focus toward a healthier lifestyle.”

Kickboxing as a sport, he said, is a solo activity, where
failure cannot be blamed on anyone but the individual.

“You are the only person accountable for your action inside
the ring,” Wilkinson said. “You don’t have a team to carry you, so it is all on
you. There is more accountability for your training and what you do in life.”

The same, he said, can be said for getting in shape.

His services include a variety of levels and activities, from
weight loss to training to the professional level.

“The best way to lose weight and build lean muscle is to do
kickboxing and boxing exercises,” Wilkinson said. 

He even works with youth, including one who made the move
to the new location.

“It keeps him out of trouble,” Wilkinson e said. “It gives
him a place to go after school and something constructive to do — something to
look forward to, as well.”

While he trains competitors to fight in the ring, he said
there is a zero-tolerance policy of violence outside of the gym.

“Anyone that trains here,” Wilkinson said, “unless it is a self-defense
situation, saving the life of another individual, is a one and done.”

Training in this way, he said, helps youth from being
bullied, but can also help instill the discipline that can keep someone from
becoming a bully as well.

“I dealt with both sides,” Wilkinson said, “so I know what
it is like on the other side.”

Opening the gym in the middle of a pandemic also created a
unique situation, noting the gym can help relieve the stress and anxiety
caused by COVID-19.

“Right now, people are telling me they are stressed, they
have been in their house, they have been bugged out over the whole COVID thing,
so long just cooped up,” Wilkinson said. “They need an outlet.

“To come in and naturally punch something, you feel relief,
but I can teach you to do it constructively,” he said. 

He hopes that as many as would like will take advantage of
the location to help find relief during this stressful time.

&nbsp;“I know what the
benefits of this place have done for me. I just want to offer that to others in
the community,” Wilkinson said.

And for those that put in an effort, the reward can be life
changing he said.

“The biggest pressure here is not necessarily the
self-defense, or the competing fighters is getting people moving and active
again, and confident in themselves,” Wilkinson said. “When you can throw a
punch right, you move different, you talk different, you walk different and not
necessarily in a cocky manner, but you have faith in your abilities because you
have seen it tried and done over and over and over again.”

He knows what happens when people are not active, to the point
of causing depression and other mental health concerns, but getting in shape and
training can help maintain a positive — and happier — lifestyle.

“If your body feels good, the rest of you feels good,” Wilkinson
said.

While the opening has been a slow rollout, he said interest
continues to grow, with a few new clients coming in weekly.

“He is an amazing trainer,” said Wild Style Kickboxing
client Ray Bergmeier. “I am doing some private lessons and I am going to do
some group, but just a lot of attention to detail and he tailors it for what
you need and what you want to do, whether it’s losing weight, getting in shape
or learn some kickboxing or self-defense, whatever it may be.

“His intensity is also very dynamic,” he said. “I think he
can bring a lot of different levels of intensity depending upon what the client
needs. I highly recommend it to anybody that wants to get in shape or try something different."

As the business grows, Wilkinson plans to continue to bring in more
equipment to give the clients the ability to complete a full workout in the
gym along with training.

He offers group basic classes and can offer personalize
training as well. 

While kickboxing, he said sometime carries the stigma of violence,
but in his location, the environment is geared toward inclusivity.

“We are a family friendly environment,” Wilkinson said.
“There are no egos here. Everybody is intimidated by ‘fight gym and boxing,’ but
there is no tough guy s*** in here. Everybody checks their egos and attitudes at
the door. We’re here to lift each other and better each other. Everybody is
fighting something, when you get in here, we fight it together.”

his hometown of Great Bend, training at Iron Cobra Martial Arts. “That's where my journey really started,” Wilkinson said. Ultimately, he found a gym in the region that helped launch
his fighting career.And over the last four years as an active competitor in combat
sports, he's won several titles along the way.<figure>

training them at his home.“Before I knew it, I had more and more people interested or
wanting to show up and get in shape — to change their life to a more active and
healthier lifestyle, up and moving and doing something,” Wilkinson said.He said boxing and kickboxing have becoming more mainstream
as well and with Hays being a college town, self-defense knowledge is frequently
sought in the city.“A lot of women have taken an interest in what we have going
on,” Wilkinson said.So, over the summer, he was actively training more than a
dozen people out of his home. After being pursued about winter training, he began
the process of securing a location.“I didn’t realize it was going to be as big as it was,” Wilkinson
said. “But we wanted to put a place together where people could train and get
their life back.”Training and the preparing for fights, he said, helped him
get his life on track and now he hopes to share that with others.“I literally had to fight my way to a better life,” he said.
“Now I can do it constructively, and this has helped me keep my life on track
and keep a focus toward a healthier lifestyle.”Kickboxing as a sport, he said, is a solo activity, where
failure cannot be blamed on anyone but the individual.<figure>

 </figure>“You are the only person accountable for your action inside
the ring,” Wilkinson said. “You don’t have a team to carry you, so it is all on
you. There is more accountability for your training and what you do in life.”The same, he said, can be said for getting in shape.His services include a variety of levels and activities, from
weight loss to training to the professional level.“The best way to lose weight and build lean muscle is to do
kickboxing and boxing exercises,” Wilkinson said. He even works with youth, including one who made the move
to the new location.“It keeps him out of trouble,” Wilkinson e said. “It gives
him a place to go after school and something constructive to do — something to
look forward to, as well.”While he trains competitors to fight in the ring, he said
there is a zero-tolerance policy of violence outside of the gym.“Anyone that trains here,” Wilkinson said, “unless it is a self-defense
situation, saving the life of another individual, is a one and done.”Training in this way, he said, helps youth from being
bullied, but can also help instill the discipline that can keep someone from
becoming a bully as well.“I dealt with both sides,” Wilkinson said, “so I know what
it is like on the other side.”<h2>Stress relief</h2>Opening the gym in the middle of a pandemic also created a
unique situation, noting the gym can help relieve the stress and anxiety
caused by COVID-19.“Right now, people are telling me they are stressed, they
have been in their house, they have been bugged out over the whole COVID thing,
so long just cooped up,” Wilkinson said. “They need an outlet.“To come in and naturally punch something, you feel relief,
but I can teach you to do it constructively,” he said. He hopes that as many as would like will take advantage of
the location to help find relief during this stressful time.&nbsp;“I know what the
benefits of this place have done for me. I just want to offer that to others in
the community,” Wilkinson said.And for those that put in an effort, the reward can be life
changing he said.“The biggest pressure here is not necessarily the
self-defense, or the competing fighters is getting people moving and active
again, and confident in themselves,” Wilkinson said. “When you can throw a
punch right, you move different, you talk different, you walk different and not
necessarily in a cocky manner, but you have faith in your abilities because you
have seen it tried and done over and over and over again.”<figure>

of causing depression and other mental health concerns, but getting in shape and
training can help maintain a positive — and happier — lifestyle.“If your body feels good, the rest of you feels good,” Wilkinson
said.While the opening has been a slow rollout, he said interest
continues to grow, with a few new clients coming in weekly.<figure>

client Ray Bergmeier. “I am doing some private lessons and I am going to do
some group, but just a lot of attention to detail and he tailors it for what
you need and what you want to do, whether it’s losing weight, getting in shape
or learn some kickboxing or self-defense, whatever it may be.“His intensity is also very dynamic,” he said. “I think he
can bring a lot of different levels of intensity depending upon what the client
needs. I highly recommend it to anybody that wants to get in shape or try something different."As the business grows, Wilkinson plans to continue to bring in more
equipment to give the clients the ability to complete a full workout in the

training as well. While kickboxing, he said sometime carries the stigma of violence,

“There are no egos here. Everybody is intimidated by ‘fight gym and boxing,’ but
there is no tough guy s*** in here. Everybody checks their egos and attitudes at
the door. We’re here to lift each other and better each other. Everybody is

HaysMed, part of The University of Kansas Health System was recently honored by the American Society for Health Care Engineering and the American Hospital Associate for their energy reduction efforts.

The award was earned through the ASHE’ Energy to Care Program.&nbsp; The award reflects a facility’s commitment to energy conservation.

HaysMed has implemented various energy reduction projects including converted over 8,200 lighting fixtures to LED lights last fall.

“We are very proud of all the accomplishments that our staff have undertaken to be good stewards of energy conservation,”&nbsp; said Eddie Herrman, President and CEO.&nbsp; “This award recognizes the thought, planning and hard work that has gone into making these changes.”

HaysMed recognized for energy reduction efforts

It has been a on-again, off-again start to the 2021 session. 

Last week the “Value Them Both” constitutional amendment is one step closer to letting the people of Kansas decide. On Friday, the House passed the Constitutional Amendment with the required two-thirds majority vote. If approved by Kansas Senate, Kansas voters will have the opportunity in the August 2022 election to vote on whether they believe the state should be able to regulate abortion procedures and prohibit taxpayer dollars from being used to pay for abortions. The Senate is scheduled to take up the amendment this week.

You might recall the amendment came about as a result a recent Kansas Supreme Court ruling, known as the Hodes &amp; Nauser v. Schmidt decision. Due to this ruling, current law – such as parental consent for minors, 24-hour waiting periods and even simple safety standards for abortion clinics – are left open to litigation and very likely to be overturned. 

The “Value Them Both” amendment will allow Kansas voters the opportunity to weigh in and determine whether Kansas will continue to be a pro-life state.

Also last week, the House overwhelmingly passed SB 14 on a bipartisan vote of 119-3. SB 14 is the Legislature’s response to keeping Kansas safely open through the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Modeled after last year’s 2020 Special Session HB 2016, SB 14 continues the state of disaster emergency until March 31, 2021, and protects the checks and balances the 2020 Legislature put in place. This includes protecting the Kansas’ ability to continue receiving federal disaster resources and prohibiting the Governor from being able to shutdown Kansas businesses.

SB 14 also protects temporary licensure for certain health care providers, access to telemedicine and business immunity from unwarranted COVID-19 claims so that health care providers and small business owners can continue to care for their patients and safely operate through the duration of the pandemic.

The bill passed the Senate earlier the week (on a bipartisan vote of 34-1), which means SB 14 now goes to the Governor’s desk for consideration.

The Legislature’s health committees received an update from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) on the state’s distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine. Media reports had indicated as of December 31, “Kansas had the lowest vaccination rate among states. The CDC said Monday that the state is now up to 2,650 shots per 100,000 residents and that 25 states have lower vaccination rates, including Missouri, where the rate is 2,445 per 100,000 residents.”

House Leadership requested vaccination plan details and numbers back in November at a State Finance Council meeting and again in December. 

On January 20, the day after the health committee meeting, the governor released a vaccine dashboard with data on doses given, doses distributed, and the percentage of Kansans vaccinated. The committee also learned that the <a href="https://www.kansasvaccine.gov/">KansasVaccine.gov</a> website will eventually be capable of providing information on where the general public can go to receive vaccines in their area and which vaccination phase the state is in. To date, the Find My Vaccine dashboard is not available on the website.

Information on the 5 vaccination phases was made available by the governor earlier in January, altering a previous vaccination plan she touted. The governor announced on January 21 that Kansas was moving into Phase 2, when seniors age 65 and older, high contact critical workers, and those in congregate settings will begin receiving the vaccine.

Unfortunately, there is more work to be done on getting information coordinated on vaccine distribution, especially as the number of individuals eligible to receive vaccines grows in Phase 2. 

Counties are already seeing problems with getting enough vaccines to meet the demand. The January 21st KDHE vaccine update indicates there are 1 million Kansans eligible in Phase 2, but the next shipment of vaccines from the federal government will only total about 40,000 doses. It is up to each county to decide how to allocate the vaccines.

The health committees have scheduled another meeting this week to continue to seek the answers Kansans need about vaccines from KDHE.

The first virtual version of Fort Hays State University’s popular spring Scholarship Recognition Program tour will begin with students in the Wichita area. It will be the first of 12 online events slated for 2021.

The university created this annual, month-long series of events to recognize high school and transfer students who are considering or have committed to Fort Hays State. The event also provides an up-close look at what makes the FHSU experience one of the best values in higher education today. Since its beginning in the late 1980s, Fort Hays State’s SRP program – unique in higher education – has had the mission of recognizing all students interested in college and their friends and families.&nbsp;

The university recognizes every student in attendance, including those awarded scholarships for the next academic year.

“These events are perfect for students and parents who want to solidify a very important decision,” said Jon Armstrong, admissions director. “We highly encourage any student who is considering or planning to attend FHSU this coming fall to RSVP.”

FHSU circuit of scholarship recognition programs set to begin

Rose McFarland, a Thomas More Prep-Marian teacher and coach, said trophies, winning seasons and championships are not what have been the highlights of her career.

McFarland, 59, who has been a coach and teacher for 25 years, said the relationships she has built with her students and peers have been the most treasured aspect of her years in education and athletics.

She has taught all levels from kindergarten through college.

"When you see some of those kids who you have taught in the past go out into the world and find careers and find families, to me, that's very rewarding," she said. "It's about life. Hopefully, you are teaching some life lessons. Things aren't always easy. Sometimes there are challenges, but when things get tough, you have all those people around you to support you.&nbsp;

"I have been through that in my life. A lot of people stepped up and gave me support, and that is probably what I appreciate most."

Many of her current junior high students may not know, but McFarland faced a life-and-death challenge when she began teaching at TMP.

McFarland was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, she went through treatment and was given a clean bill of health.

Shortly after coming to coach and teach health and PE at TMP nine years ago, McFarland's cancer reoccurred.

She underwent surgery, chemo and radiation.

Melissa Schoepf, TMP math teacher, said in her nomination for the Hays Post Teacher of the Month, McFarland overcame her cancer diagnosis,  all while maintaining a positive attitude. 

"She has inspired our students, faculty and staff to never give up and keep pushing through,"&nbsp;Schoepf said. "She rarely missed a day in the classroom or on the basketball court while undergoing chemotherapy, which demonstrates her dedication to her students and her mental toughness."

McFarland said coming to school was motivating during her treatment.

"It got me up in the morning. I had a lot of support, and that helped me a lot," she said. "People were very supportive here. People I've coached in the past and taught with in the past and family were very supportive."

She said she could remember coaching games, coming back to her office, laying down on her coach and not having the energy to get back up.

"It wasn't easy, but I did it, and got through there, and in another year, it came back again," she said.

She appreciated the school allowing her to continue to teach. Her doctor said he was amazed she was back in school.&nbsp;

"I think it is how you see things and just being positive," she said. "I had a lot of positivity around me. My faith helped carry me through. I am just happy for every day I am here."

She said she knows others have greater challenges, and she tries not to focus on herself or her challenges.&nbsp;

When she first was diagnosed with cancer, McFarland was substitute teaching and coaching&nbsp; her young son's basketball team. McFarland lost her hair during treatment, so all of the boys on her team shaved their heads.

"I am sure they learned to have more courage," she said. "They did that for me.

"Those kids I coached, those kids I taught, they got to see that I wasn't going to give up, and you get through those challenges and move on."

People were so generous and kind to her that it was difficult, she said, because she had to swallow her pride and learn to accept the help.

"I think sometimes it helps those people who do things for you," she said. "It helps them as much as it probably helped me."

Her faith and being a part of the religious community at TMP was important to her as she struggled with the cancer and still today.&nbsp;

"We can talk about our religion. We can talk about our faith. We can share our faith. We can talk about Jesus," McFarland said. "That's why I'm here. I am allowed to do that and share with others."

Schoepf, who nominated McFarland for Teacher of the Month, said as a physical education/health teacher, McFarland continually provides fun, engaging, active lessons to her students and works with helping them maintain a healthy lifestyle. 

One activity she is very passionate about is the school's annual health fair, during which her students plan and present on current health issues.

McFarland has always put value on physical and health education. She started the physical education program at St. Joseph Elementary School in Hays, and also kicked off the program at TMP, when the junior high was added there.

"A lot of people think its just activities or fitness, but there is so much more," she said. "There is so much social/emotional wellness. You learn leadership skills. You learn teamwork. You learn sportsmanship. You learn how to stay fit, plus they have fun.&nbsp;

"It is a good break from academia over there. They can come and release and learn how to get along with others."

"It's skills for a lifetime. Our health is so valuable. You can have all the money in the world, but if you don't have your health, what good is it?" McFarland said.

&nbsp;She said she tries to reach those students who don't like PE.

"If we can find that one activity to reach them, I think that is very important — if we can get them to think they want to do it for a lifetime."

As a coach some of her best memories have not been the winning seasons, but the teams who were able to grow.

"Sometimes those challenging years are the funnest," she said. ... "Just seeing the growth when they finally do something, you are like 'Aha, they finally got it.' "

She wants to do her best for her athletes and for them to do the best they can for themselves. McFarland said she is very competitive, which lead to many sleepless nights, going over games in her head.&nbsp;

She said in the end, it's about teaching her students and athletes about life.

"I like sharing what I have experienced," she said, "the values of the things I learned in my past. It's not for the money.

"I think it is important to have good role models and leaders and instill a passion for whatever they want to do in life."
