Update: Tornado damage reported in Selden

SHERIDAN COUNTY— Residents in the small northwest Kansas community of Selden will begin the cleanup after a tornado rolled through the county Monday evening.  The storm damaged many buildings, moved train cars from their tracks and blew a semi truck over but there were no reports of injuries.

Midwest Energy was working to restore power to the community of just over 200 residents early Tuesday morning.  

The National Weather Service will send crews to assess damage and determine the strength of the tornado.

UPDATE: 10:50 p.m. 

No injuries have been reported from a tornado that damaged buildings in the town of Selden.

"There is damage to some structures, but thankfully we have no reports of injuries in the area," said Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Tod Hileman via social media. "We did have initial reports of several semi-trucks blown over, but as of right now we have only worked one and that driver is okay."

"KHP units are remaining on scene to assist and protect the residence of Selden and local law enforcement," he said.

Sheridan County Emergency Management has confirmed a tornado caused damage in the town of Selden at around 6:25 p.m. Monday, with numerous buildings damaged.

The tornado was part of a string of activity that produced severe storms and several reported tornados in Thomas and Sheridan Counties.

"We have multiple units working in the Selden area following a tornado touchdown," said KHP Trooper Tod Hileman via social media. "Several semi-trucks and train cars are blown over. Troopers are also checking on the residents of Selden and the surrounding area to make sure they are OK."

He also said people should avoid the area as roads may be closed.

Midwest Energy reported shortly after 9 p.m. the town was without power.

"Power is out to Selden, and crews are out patrolling by lines and making damage assessments," the company said. "There are 234 customers without power; we have four crews on standby to make repairs."
