After the recent retirement of the longtime director at the Hays Ag Research Center, an interim director has been appointed.

Dan Devlin, 63, will serve as the interim head of the Western Kansas Research and Extension Centers.

Devlin, who has a doctorate in agronomy, has spent 35 years in agriculture research.

Bob Gilliam, Ph.D., had been in the role for many years, but retired in August.

Anticipating Gilliam's retirement, K-State organized a search committee for Gilliam's replacement, but then pandemic hit, and the college did not think it could perform an adequate search for a new director under the circumstances, Devlin said.

K-State was also concerned about the effects of pandemic on the state's budget and subsequently on research and extension's budget.

Devlin said the search process will likely take at least a year, maybe two. During that time, Devlin will serve as the interim head of the Western Kansas centers.

"We are committed to getting somebody full time, and we'll do a national search to get the best person we can find."

The western Kansas region covers Hays, Garden City, Tribune and Colby.

Devlin grew up on his family's Smith County farm, which the family still operates.

When he was a child he attended the Fort Hays State University roundups for livestock judging competitions. He also was acquainted with the Hays ag research station through his father's attendance at field days.

Devlin received his bachelor's and master's degrees in agronomy from K-State and earned his Ph.D. from Washington State University.

He served as agronomist in the Northeast Kansas Extension office in Manhattan before taking a position as a faculty member in agronomy at K-State. He served as a water quality specialist.

He was serving as the head of the Water Resources Institute in the Kansas Center for Agriculture Resources and the Environment immediately before assuming the interim role he is in now.

He also managed the fertilizer research program.

As a water quality researcher he spent much time in Western Kansas. During that time, he also performed feedlot air quality research.

Devlin still lives in Manhattan. He is in Western Kansas Tuesdays through Thursdays.

Research is continuing at the ag research farm in Hays. Becuase the Hays farm has a feedlot, it does research on distiller's grains, as well as range land cow-calf grazing practices.

"Many of the wheat varieties in Western Kansas have been developed right here in Hays," he said.

The farm also has a sorghum millet breeding program.

"There is so much more going on out here than I ever thought there was," Devlin said. "That has been what has been exciting. I hope to make a difference while I'm here and bring in a few ideas while I'm here."

Research and extension has also tried to expand cotton as a cash crop in Kansas, although not necessarily in Hays because of its northern location.

Cotton was grown in Kansas starting about 20 years ago. Cotton likes heat and is drought tolerant. If temperatures continue to climb as climatologists predict, cotton may be a alternative to other irrigated crops such as corn, Devlin said.

"Is the environment going to continue to change? In 20 years will it be a little warmer? Will Hays be more like Garden City?" Devlin said. "We are looking ahead at what might happen in 10 or 20 years."

During the last year, the state had 200,000 acres in cotton. Devlin said he would like that number to increase to 500,000 by 2030.

A farmer can reap the same economic benefits from cotton as from irrigated corn with one-third to two-thirds less water.

"Farmers have told us one of the things they would like us to do is look for other crops," Devlin said. "Right now we have wheat, sorghum, corn—dry land and more irrigated corn. Soybeans have moved west.&nbsp; They want us to develop more alternative crops."

One of Devlin's projects for this year is a strategic plan for Western Kansas Research and Extension. He will be working with faculty first and then hopes to bring in stakeholders from the community.

He said he hoped to put together a plan through 2030.

"If anybody in Hays or the community has any questions, contact the station here," Devlin said. "They have been our partners for 100 years. It is so wonderful to be so close to a community like Hays."&nbsp;

NORTON — The Norton Police Department has been able to purchase a ballistic shield thanks to a financial donation to the department.

Police Chief Gerald Cullumber thanked the Darin and Julie Campbell family in a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/NPD67654/">social media post</a> on February 4.&nbsp;

Cullumber says NPD will made the shield available to area law enforcement agencies when the need arises.&nbsp;

Norton PD purchases ballistic shield thanks for donation 

NORTON&nbsp;-&nbsp;Norton County Community Foundation recently announced a new art exhibit in the Gloria A. Nelson Cultural Arts Center. “Watercolor Paintings” by Donna Eastman will be on display in the Heaton Building until April 9.

Eastman began painting in 1996, taking classes weekly for four years with Brumley Gallery Owner, Joan Brumley, in Bass Lake, Calif. Over the years, she has participated in professional art workshops from internationally-renowned artists and has been accepted into many juried exhibitions and critique groups. She served on the executive board for the Arizona Watercolor Association, Arizona Alliance for the Arts, and the Flagstaff Arts Council. 

Today, Eastman serves as the president and CEO of Norton Area Chamber of Commerce and Travel &amp; Tourism in Norton.

“I love the way visual art can speak without words,” Eastman said. “I am intrigued with watercolor because of its free-flowing nature. My inspiration comes from all things vintage, nature, and water, reflecting everyday moments or destinations that impact thoughtful images.” Eastman’s technical influences are Winslow Homer and Edgar Whitney, and her creative influences are Tony Couch and Marilyn Simandle.

There are nearly 20 paintings on display as part of Eastman’s exhibit. The pieces are upbeat, colorful, and expressive. Exhibited paintings are available to purchase, and 10% of sales benefit Norton County Arts County. Additionally, prints and notecards are available locally at Garden Gate, Etc.

“We are thrilled to have Donna’s paintings available for the community to see,” said Tara Vance, NCCF executive director. “The walls of the gallery have been empty for a couple months due to COVID, and it’s so nice to see life on them again. We invite everyone down to the Heaton Building to enjoy this cultural experience!”

Norton chamber director featured in new winter art exhibition

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A faster-spreading coronavirus variant first identified in the United Kingdom is probably more widespread in Kansas than a single confirmed case in the state’s northwest suggests, officials with a major health system said Thursday.

The first identified case of the variant came as the number of new COVID-19 cases dropped in the state and with officials focused on distributing vaccines. State health department data showed that Kansas averaged 914 new confirmed and probable cases a day for the seven days ending Wednesday, the lowest seven-day rolling average since late October and just a third of the record average of 2,767 cases for the seven days ending Nov. 18.

Public health officials also are concerned that people will attend gatherings and not maintain social distances at Super Bowl parties this weekend.

<a href="https://khap2.kdhe.state.ks.us/NewsRelease/PDFs/2-3-21%20variant%20final.pdf" target="_blank">The state health department announced</a>&nbsp;Wednesday that it had confirmed a case of the U.K. variant, in Ellis County, which is home to Hays and Fort Hays State University. Officials had worried that the variant was responsible for a fast-developing outbreak at a minimum-security state prison in Winfield in south-central Kansas, but genetic testing ruled that out.

“If it is in Hays, is there a chance it is in Kansas City? I think there is a chance it is in Kansas City and surrounding areas,” Dr. Dana Hawkinson, director of infection control for the University of Kansas Health System, said during an online briefing Thursday.

Dr. David Wild, a University of Kansas Health System vice president, said even before the first Kansas case was identified, he could “nearly guarantee” coronavirus variants were spreading already in Kansas and the Kansas City area.

“We know now of one in the state,” he said. “There will be more.”

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/how-many-coronavirus-variants-are-there-12d1f000ed9601f99c1c7c08e020ba7b">Cases of the U.K. and other variants</a>&nbsp;are identified through a full review of the virus’ genome.

Fort Hays State and the local health department said the person infected with variant was a student-athlete at the university, which tests its athletes weekly for COVID-19. Officials said the athlete’s contacts are being traced and that the state health department was sending a mobile testing van to Hays.

Hawkinson said it’s “well established” that the U.K. variant is “more transmissible,” and public health officials fear it could be deadlier. But he added, “We have to be concerned about other variants arising as well.”

“We are all tired, and it is one day at a time, but that is why we need to continue to need to be more vigilant, especially this weekend,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Republican-controlled Kansas Senate debated formally condemning a decision by Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly’s administration to make prison inmates eligible for COVID-19 vaccines during the second phase of vaccine distribution, which Kansas launched last month.

Prison inmates are in line with people 65 and older, workers critical to the economy and other people in group living situations. They’re ahead of most of the state’s 2.9 million residents, including people under 65 with medical conditions putting them at risk of severe complications if they are infected with COVID-19.

The Senate’s&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2021_22/measures/documents/sr1707_00_0000.pdf" target="_blank">nonbinding resolution</a>&nbsp;was drafted by health committee Chair Richard Hilderbrand, a Galena Republican. It called on Kelly to reverse her policy on inoculating inmates “without delay,” criticizing the idea that violent offenders could get shots before their victims.

Kelly has defended the policy, saying it will protect prison workers and helps keep COVID-19 in check in communities with prisons. Kansas also is following the recommendations of public health officials and experts, and state prisons have been especially hard-hit with virus outbreaks.

“I continue to believe that we are doing the right thing,” she said during a Wednesday news conference at the Statehouse.

But Kelly also said the state is for now vaccinating prison employees and, “Then, when we have finished with the staff, we will move on and begin with inmates who are 65 or older.”

The diagnostic medical sonography program was ranked second by Accredited Online Colleges. The program is 124 credit hours in duration, with the major elective courses comprising 30 credit hours, which students can obtain by choosing from a large list of relevant imaging classes. Those who have completed a radiologic technology program from a non-degree-granting institution may find FHSU’s program particularly advantageous to their educational pursuits, as the university grants up to 46 credits toward the degree for prior related coursework. FHSU Online programs ranked high by numerous organizations

I arrived in Kansas in 1979, having gone to college, grad school and then taught in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana and Illinois, states with a single land-grant flagship university.&nbsp; Kansas, I observed, had a much smaller population but two major universities (KU, KSU) and one (WSU) with such aspirations.&nbsp; Added to these were three regional universities, another (Washburn) receiving substantial state aid, and 19 (count ‘em) community colleges.&nbsp; All for fewer than 2.4 million Kansans.

Such immense capacity seemed crazy then, and even more so now, &nbsp;given the hefty administrative and physical plant costs for all this higher education.

Such surplus capacity and duplication of administration and facilities didn’t bother me much.&nbsp; KU generally stood strong, and my own department supported my teaching and scholarship.

Over time, state backing for higher education consistently fell, federal mandates increased, and tuition rates shot up.&nbsp; In 2009, nevertheless, 47 percent of University expenditures flowed from student tuition and fees to faculty members, the bedrock of any successful school.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Administrators and ancillary personnel rose sharply in numbers and costs, and an increasingly corporate University embarked upon a highly leveraged building spree, gambling (the operative term) on increased federal funding and many more full-pay foreign students.&nbsp; Faculty members were not meaningfully consulted.&nbsp;

By 2020, faculty compensation made up just 25 percent of student tuition and fees, and only 8.4 percent to the total KU budget.&nbsp; That’s right, 8.4 percent.

Bets were called, as income plummeted and costs soared.&nbsp; All Kansas institutions were vulnerable, and KU especially so, given the long-term declining pool of domestic students and then its abrupt loss of foreign students.

The superstructure of Kansas higher education may well tumble, and it will likely be brutal. The implications are legion. Here are just two.

First, I know many young associate professors who recently earned tenure. They are all talented scholars and dedicated teachers. Over the past few years their pay has barely budged, and lately they’ve absorbed temporary cuts.&nbsp; Now they legitimately fear for their jobs, given the KU administration’s cavalier adoption of a policy that will facilitate terminating tenured faculty

These young scholars represent exactly the kind of faculty members that KU should nurture for decades to come, but they, like all their faculty counterparts, rightly question the University’s commitment to their future.

Second, the Regents and KU are threatening to gut the University Press of Kansas. Over the years, UPK has established a sterling national reputation by publishing a catalog of important books. Yet collapsing finances may well destroy this highly regarded part of the Regents system, which serves all Kansas public universities but represents just a drop in the Regents’ fiscal bucket. Nationally, this possibility has generated intense negative reaction from authors and scholars, seriously damaging the state’s academic reputation.&nbsp; No one seems to care.

What’s to be done?&nbsp; Given the Legislature’s lack of support for higher education and the surplus capacity of Kansas state universities, Governor Kelly should constitute a commission, independent of the Regents, to consider downsizing, divestitures, and efficiencies that would support both faculty and valuable entities like the University Press.&nbsp;

The most opportune time to do this was ten or twenty years ago, but it must be done now – right now -- without making faculty members the first targets.

Everyone knows that someone stranded in the ocean should not drink the water. The salt content of that water will make a bad situation worse. &nbsp;What many people don’t realize is that this same principle can harm plants. Fertilizers are salts or are converted to salts before plant take-up. They must be salts in order for the plant roots to absorb them. &nbsp;However, salt levels can build up over time and eventually may harm plant roots leading to scorched leaves and unhealthy plants. Though this can happen under field conditions, especially in low rainfall areas, it is particularly critical with houseplants. Houseplants have a certain soil volume that doesn’t change until a plant is repotted. Salt build-up can be a crucial concern especially if the houseplants are fertilized so heavily that the plants can’t use all the nutrients and fertilizer salts build-up. &nbsp;This is especially common in winter when houseplants do not use much fertilizer due to low levels of light.​Leaching an overabundance of salts can be an important practice to ensure the health of our houseplants.

Leaching is not a complicated or difficult process. It consists of adding enough water to wash out excess salts.How much water is enough? Add the amount of water that would equal twice the volume of the pot. This, of course, would need to be done outside or in a bathtub or sink. Water must be added slowly so that it doesn’t overflow the rim of the pot. If salt has formed a crust on the surface of the soil, remove it but don’t take more than 1/4 inch of the underlying media. Identification of variant coronavirus strain initially announced Wednesday

Ellis County Health Department and Fort Hays State University

A Fort Hays State University student-athlete who tested positive for the COVID-19 virus as part of the university’s weekly student athlete testing program, has been identified through whole genome sequencing as <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/932820a9-9f00-4b7b-bddc-032485ed14d3">positive for the UK variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.&nbsp;</a>

Case investigation and contact tracing are ongoing. Individuals who are at an elevated risk will be notified. KDHE will deploy a mobile lab to Fort Hays State University later today. KDHE will conduct on-site testing that will yield positive or negative results within four hours. They will also collect samples that will be sent to the state lab for whole-genome sequencing analysis to identify potential COVID-19 variants.&nbsp;

Fort Hays State University’s Critical Incident Policy Group, Tiger Athletics, FHSU Student Health Center, KDHE and the Ellis County Health Department are working closely to coordinate the next steps in our joint response to the identification of this UK variant of the virus in Ellis County.&nbsp;

Fort Hays State University and the Ellis County Health Department want the people of Ellis County to know that the best way to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and its evolving variants is to continue to adhere to essential health and safety precautions, including maintaining physical distancing, wearing face masks, practicing good hygiene, staying home if ill, following isolation and quarantine recommendations, and getting vaccinated as soon as it is available.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Ellis County Historical Society will hold its rescheduled annual meeting on Monday, Feb. 15, at 7:00 p.m. 

The meeting will be held at Celebration Community Church at 5790 230th Ave., Hays. Please use the office door on the east side of the building. The meeting will be held in the Purple Room.

Members and the public are invited to take part in the ECHS Present and Future Discussion to follow the meeting. Bottled water and individual snacks will be provided in a socially distanced and masked setting.

There are three officer positions open, and five trustee member seats open. Only ECHS members may vote.

You can renew or become a member at the meeting. Single memberships are $15 and Family is $25. Donations also are accepted.

TOPEKA — A CDC emerging variant, which has been found in 33 U.S. states, was identified in Kansas
Wednesday afternoon. A Kansas resident in Ellis County was found to have the United Kingdom variant
known as B.1.1.7. A case investigation is being conducted to determine how the person became infected with this particular variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, as well as if others may have been exposed. No
further details are being released concerning the patient, including demographics.


The variant was determined through the whole genome sequencing conducted through the
laboratories at the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.


“This finding does not change our public health recommendations. We continue to encourage people to
take the appropriate precautions: follow isolation and quarantine recommendations, practice physical
distancing, wearing masks, good hygiene, staying home if ill and getting the vaccine if you are able to,
once the supply is sufficient,” said Dr. Lee Norman, KDHE Secretary.


This variant was first reported in the U.S. at the end of December. Evidence from the UK indicates
that this variant spreads much more quickly through the population and, given that fact, may rapidly
increase the number of hospitalizations and deaths. More studies are needed to confirm this finding.

that unique clothing item, shopping options can be somewhat limited.

A recent store opening,
however, promises to make finding a distinctive Western-style easier for men,
women and children.

Udderly Wild opened in
downtown Hays at 125 E. Eighth in mid-January. While the storefront
is new, the boutique has been operating online since 2019.

Opening the brick-and-mortar location was a longtime goal of husband and wife owners Hollie and Taylor Stramel.

“The
idea of opening a boutique has always been something that has been in the back
of our minds, but we always just thought ‘Oh, we can't do that’ or ‘That seems
like a big step we aren't ready for.' But if anyone knows us, we dive in head
first and we don't look back,” Hollie Stramel said. “We started this business
in 2019 as an online business working out of our house, and I think Taylor
would agree with me when I say that it was consuming any extra space we had in
there, and that is something that also helped us decide it was time to open a
store.”

She said they wanted to bring more
variety to the area, offering clothing and other items that otherwise would not
be available locally.

“Our
inspiration is to have an affordable boutique for all sizes to shop in,”
Stramel said. “We have men’s, women’s and children’s clothing to be able to
please everyone.”

The store carries a variety of
merchandise, with brands such as Live Life Clothing, KanCan and Flying Monkey,
she said. They also offer graphic Ts, jewelry, shoes and hats and youth clothing featuring jumpers for little girls and flare pants. 

“We also have Duke Cannon soaps for
men, Casa M Spice Co. meat spice gift sets, Cody Johnson cologne, Spongelle
exfoliating sponges, tea towels, mugs, and much more,” Stramel said. “Since our
boutique offers Western fashion, and men's clothing you can't find anywhere
else, I really think that is something to help us stand out. Our Cody Johnson
cologne is something we brought in the store to really set us apart in Hays. I
mean, who doesn't love him?”

Stramel said the shop focuses on
brining unique Western-themed items to the area, but also strives to keep
prices low.

“Our
most expensive pair of jeans is $46, and in my opinion that alone sets us
apart,” Stramel said. “In the future when our name gets out there more, I hope
we are known for our reasonable prices. Although we have a lot of unique items,
our pricing — in my opinion — is the
best part. We really strive to keep all of our items affordable.”

Since opening the storefront in
January, Stramel said the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

“The
response we have got since opening has been absolutely incredible,” Stramel
said. “We have had people of all age groups come in, and they were all able to
find something to fit their wants and needs. We cannot thank the Hays and
surrounding communities enough for helping us support our dream.”

She said the most rewarding part of
the opening so far is how supportive the community has been.

“This has been a dream of ours for
so long that it truly is heartwarming to get all of the support from everyone
this far, and we cannot thank everyone enough,” Stramel said.

And while the storefront gives
shoppers the opportunity to browse items in person, their online shop will also
remain open.

“Along with shipping, we have an
option at checkout to do in-store pickup to hold items so they don’t sell out
before they are able to stop in and buy it,” Stramel said. “If you choose in-store pickup, you can schedule to pick it up as far up to 90 days out to fit
your needs and schedule.”

Even with the recent expansion into
the storefront, Stramel said they hope to expand their offerings in the future to
more include more men and youth clothing items and home décor.

They also hope to
become an integral part of downtown Hays.

“The biggest factor when deciding on
downtown Hays is that we love all of the involvement the Hays businesses have
in the community,” Stramel said. “We hope to soon get involved in all of the
downtown events that happen and sponsor them as well. We love the history of
Hays and knew we did not want to open our store anywhere else.”

The store is open Fridays from 10
a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4
p.m.

FHSU professor will host new season of 'The Kansas Legislature'

I was recently asked to help judge an FFA speech contest. I happily agreed to help as I thoroughly enjoy listening to young adults present their research and memorized written work before a panel of strangers. Besides, setting aside a few hours to judge is the least I can do to help support a valuable organization that helped shape me.

This year’s contest was void of a building full of chattering high schoolers from around Kansas nervously working through their manuscripts one last time before presenting to a room of judges. There was no electric feeling in the air from teens anxiously pacing hallways prior to their events. There was no tabulation room where FFA advisors would catch up with one another over warm cups of coffee and cold donuts. There was no pizza for students and adult volunteers to devour. This year’s event was virtual.

Some of my best FFA memories were when I’d get up hours before the sun, drive into town, get on a yellow bus with my fellow FFA members and travel to contests and events. Those were always the mornings I didn’t want to hit the snooze button.

On the bus, I’d practice for my contest followed by a jam out session to the likes of AC/DC thanks to someone bringing their boombox. We would all look forward to seeing our friends from across the state and being able to hangout and socialize after completing our contests while waiting for judges to tabulate scorecards. We’d play cards, eat junk food, listen to music and sometimes harass our tired ag teachers. Competing was fun. Building my skills was fun. But the social aspect was something I genuinely looked forward to as well.

I checked into the Zoom meeting room from the comfort of my kitchen. One by one, students from across the central part of Kansas would be admitted into our virtual room at their assigned time to give their prepared speech on a topic of their choice — aiming to be within six and eight minutes — before completing a five-minute question and answer session with the judges.

I’m not sure if the absence of live, in-person stone faced judges staring at you eased the anxiety of this year’s batch of prepared public speakers. I do know there was a new set of unofficial criteria each student had to mentally check aside from making sure their tie was on straight and their jacket was zipped properly before walking into a room and giving their speech at their assigned time.

Students had to be cognizant of their Wi-Fi connections, their audio levels, their lighting, the angle of their computer screens, their backgrounds and any background noises that could potentially derail a speaker. Hands down, there were a lot more that students had to prepare for this year.

While some students presented their speeches in classrooms, others presented from a room in their homes. Regardless, every one of the speakers showed up on time in their official dress to present work they had spent weeks, if not months, preparing.

While it would have been easy to take a pass on this year’s speech event because the traditional environment was nonexistent, and because students didn’t get out of school for the day, and because there was no bus ride where students could bond, and there was no opportunity to mingle with students from other schools while waiting for scores to post. I have to say that agriculture students from across central Kansas still put in the work and performed to the best of their abilities this year even though the extra perks of traveling to a contest and seeing their friends didn't happen.

The caliber of work presented and the number of students competing was not lost. 

While COVID-19 sure has led to the creation of different experiences I don’t think any of us could have imagined a year ago; I admire the students (and their teachers) still pushing forward for continued self-improvement and excellence, even in the time of a pandemic.

I happily agreed to help as I thoroughly enjoy listening to young adults present their research and memorized written work before a panel of strangers. Besides, setting aside a few hours to judge is the least I can do to help support a valuable organization that helped shape me.This year’s contest was void of a building full of chattering high schoolers from around Kansas nervously working through their manuscripts one last time before presenting to a room of judges. There was no electric feeling in the air from teens anxiously pacing hallways prior to their events. There was no tabulation room where FFA advisors would catch up with one another over warm cups of coffee and cold donuts. There was no pizza for students and adult volunteers to devour. This year’s event was virtual.Some of my best FFA memories were when I’d get up hours before the sun, drive into town, get on a yellow bus with my fellow FFA members and travel to contests and events. Those were always the mornings I didn’t want to hit the snooze button.On the bus, I’d practice for my contest followed by a jam out session to the likes of AC/DC thanks to someone bringing their boombox. A Kansas State University beef cattle specialist is urging the state’s producers to continue monitoring their cattle’s condition, especially during periods when Mother Nature sends her winter chill.&nbsp;&nbsp;

 </figure>A Kansas State University beef cattle specialist is urging the state’s producers to continue monitoring their cattle’s condition, especially during periods when Mother Nature sends her winter chill.&nbsp;&nbsp;Justin Waggoner, a beef systems specialist with K-State Research and Extension, said producers are often ready to deal with heat stress during the summer, but cold stress during the latter stages of winter can also be challenging.&nbsp;&nbsp;“Cattle are very robust creatures; they are able to withstand a wide range of temperatures,” Waggoner said. “But January and February are often our most extreme temperatures in Kansas, and that can certainly have an impact on cattle.”&nbsp;&nbsp;Cattle are most comfortable when they are in what is known as the thermoneutral zone, a range of temperatures where they are not experiencing cold or heat stress. &nbsp;&nbsp;Waggoner said a cow’s condition going into a cold period will effect how the animal can withstand stress.&nbsp;&nbsp;“If we have a cow that is in good condition, she is going to be able to withstand colder temperatures better than a cow that is exceptionally thin,” he said. “If we take a cow that is in good condition and has had adequate time to grow that winter hair coat, that animal can withstand some fairly cold temperatures. Typically, they won’t experience cold stress until the ambient temperature (the ‘real-feel’ temperature) reaches 18 degrees Fahrenheit.”&nbsp;&nbsp;Rain, snow and wind complicate the situation, Waggoner added.&nbsp;&nbsp;“When you wet that hair down, it reduces its ability to trap air and insulate the cow,” he said. “With a wet coat, a cow can experience cold stress even at 60 degrees F.”&nbsp;&nbsp;Waggoner said cold stress increases the cow’s energy requirement -- not protein which is a common misconception. &nbsp;&nbsp;“One thing we see producers do when we get a cold weather event is they roll out hay,” Waggoner said. “What I recommend is utilizing hay that is slightly better quality than the forage those cattle currently are grazing. For example, if they had been turned out on milo or corn stalks, then a moderate quality grass hay will be higher quality than those stalks they were on.”&nbsp;&nbsp;Waggoner also suggested other high quality forages, such as alfalfa, may be used as a supplement. &nbsp;&nbsp;“In some regions of the country, it’s not uncommon for producers to use concentrates such as corn or byproducts as supplements during the winter. Producers might add 1 to 2 pounds of corn or byproduct feedstuffs under conditions of a storm front, in combination with some of the other things I’ve mentioned.”&nbsp;&nbsp;Daily updates on weather conditions – including an animal comfort index – is available online from the&nbsp;<a href="https://mesonet.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Kansas Mesonet</a>.
