Considering the fact that moles spend most of their time underground, they sure cause quite a mess above the ground.&nbsp;

Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham said the surest signs that homeowners have of moles in their yard are the meandering paths or tunnels of upheaved soil, caused by the small mammals foraging for food.&nbsp;

“Some tunnels may be abandoned soon after being built, while others are travel lanes and are used for a longer period of time,” Upham said. “If the soil is dry, moles form mounds of soil (as they search for food), but do not make the meandering paths,” &nbsp;

The result is a traffic-way of lines in the home lawn and other parts of the yard that soon cause soft sections that crumble under foot. That can cause a problem for lawns, in particular, because even though moles don’t feed on plant matter, their movements disrupt roots and uproot small plants.&nbsp;

“The best control method for moles is the use of traps,” Upham said, noting there are three types of traps (harpoon, choker and scissor-jawed) but each takes some time to master.&nbsp;

“Moles use some tunnels more than others,” Upham said. “Use a broomstick or something similar to poke holes in a number of runs. Check a day later to see which runs have been repaired. These are the active runs that should be used to place traps.”&nbsp;

In an active run, Upham suggests excavating the soil, placing the trap and then replacing loose soil. “Secure the trap so that the recoil will not lift the trap out of the ground,” he said. “Make sure the triggering mechanism is in the center of the run.”&nbsp;

To help ensure success, push down two holes on each side of the trap. “Moles should be caught when they try to repair the tunnel,” Upham said. “Move the traps if moles are not caught within three days.”&nbsp;

Aside from traps, Upham said numerous home remedies to control moles have been tried, including chewing gum, noise makers, broken glass, bleaches, windmills and human hair. “None have been found to provide consistent and reliable control,” he said.&nbsp;

“Poison baits also fail to work because moles feed on earthworms and grubs, not vegetable matter,” Upham said. “Even grub control products are ineffective because they do not control earthworms, which are the primary food source for moles.”&nbsp;

Northwest Business Corridor among STIP amendment comments requested by KDOT 

A Hays man faces assault and child endangerment charges after allegedly threatening a Hays couple and their 9-month-old child with a gun.

At around 7:20 p.m. April 9, officers responded to a report of a man who had made the threat in 200 block of West Fifth.

The incident began after the male victim confronted the suspect outside of his home as he had caused a disturbance outside that had woken a sleeping child inside, according to Brian Dawson, Hays deputy chief of police.

In response, the suspect threw a beer can to the ground, pulled out a handgun, cocked the weapon and asked the victim what he had said.

He then pointed the weapon at the male victim's face and commented "Now you ain't got s*** to say," Dawson said.

The suspect then picked up the beverage and continued walking east, he said.

Arriving officers located the suspect, identified as&nbsp;Justin Isaac Schmidt, 25, Hays, coming out of a nearby residence.

When approached, Schmidt fled on foot, but was taken into custody at gunpoint by officers a short time later.

The gun used in the incident was found inside the home, Dawson said.

Schmidt was arrested on suspicion of three counts of aggravated assault, aggravated endangerment of a child, felony interference with law enforcement and possession of a firearm while under the influence.

Bids for four maintenance projects in the Hays Department of Water Resources were discussed last week during the city commission work session.

Jeff Crispin, director of water resources, presented information for purchase of a lime slaker used in the process to remove impurities in the city's water, two portable generators for water production wells and sewer lift stations, 22 miles of sanitary sewer cleaning and inspection, and rehabilitation of six water wells.&nbsp;

It's nothing fancy, just necessary maintenance, according to City Manager Toby Dougherty.&nbsp;

"We can do that because several years ago the city commission put in a multi-tier rate increase for water and wastewater [customers]," he said. "One, to help pay for the new wastewater facility, but, two, to take care of maintenance like this."&nbsp;

"Up until we had this money, it wasn't that we didn't have the need. It was because we didn't have the money to take care of our stuff,"&nbsp;Dougherty said. "It's always cheaper to take care of it than it is to replace it. It's always cheaper to put a new lining in a sewer pipe than it is to dig it up and replace it."

Dougherty said the city appreciates having the maintenance money and Crispin was directed to "figure out and get ahead" of the needs.&nbsp;

"He's done a really good job of that. Kudos to him."

Mayor Sandy Jacobs and Commissioner Shaun Musil told Crispin they appreciate his explanation of the water resources projects to the commission.

"For those of us not in that business, it's easy to understand and that's very much appreciated," Musil said.&nbsp;

"You present it in such a way that I actually understand it when I go home," Jacobs said. "My husband will ask me a question now and then that I can actually answer."

At the request of Ellis County,&nbsp;the city in December 2019 assumed responsibility for a $1.5 million Kansas Department of Transportation economic development project grant.

The project will be paid by the KDOT funds with any overage paid by the developer of the Hays Truck Plaza, D&amp;J Land and Development LLC.&nbsp;

The low bid of $1,878,301 is from Hess Services, Hays. The construction engineering agreement with Driggs Design, Hays, at a cost of of $140,800 puts the total project cost at $2 million.&nbsp;&nbsp;

All project costs will be reimbursed to the city by the KDOT grant and the developer.&nbsp;

Commissioners will consider approving all the project bids at their meeting Thursday.

KDHE: Just one new virus case in Ellis Co. since Monday

In a blow to the efforts of <a href="https://archive.hayspost.com/2019/11/03/by-the-grace-of-god-a-small-kansas-towns-fight-to-save-beloved-church/">those who have worked to save St. Anthony's Church in St. Peter</a>, on April 8, the Catholic Diocese of Salina issued a decree that would likely lead to its demolition.

But the board of directors of the St. Anthony's Church of St. Peter Preservation Society say the fight is not over, claiming the decree by the Bishop of Salina, Gerald Vincke, is contrary to the work of the church.

And while they promise to appeal the decision, they also said those who had been charged with its upkeep following the end of regular Mass at the church bear some responsibility.

"The most recent action to demolish the church in St Peter is supported by perhaps as many as 15 or 20 former parishioners of St Anthony’s Church who are in their 80s and 90s," a statement from the society said. "The small, but disorganized group, argue that they are unable to continue to maintain the property.  However, the group has put forth very little effort for more than 30 years, as they have allowed the physical structure to go into disrepair, most notably the roof.  This same group derailed a community effort to repair the roof in the past 15 years."

They also claim this action goes against the work of the church and is not the first time Vincke has done so.

"Bishop Vincke’s decree represents the second time since his appointment to the Salina Diocese that he has taken steps that seem contrary to the work of the Catholic faith," the society said.&nbsp;"In 2019, Bishop Vincke volunteered to house defrocked Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, Washington, D.C., who was accused of one of the largest sex scandals among priests in the United States at the Victoria friary. For a period of time, McCarrick lived as a free man among the Volga-German people.  It is now reported that he has left the Victoria friary.  His whereabouts are unknown."

They also said the diocese is going against the wishes of those families that can trace their family lines to the town and the church.

"The society proposed to enter into an agreement with the Diocese to take over management and operations of the church. Despite support from more than 100 Volga-Germans who wrote letters to Bishop VIncke and who trace their heritage to the Volga-German settlers in&nbsp;St.&nbsp;Peter, Bishop Vincke, with the support of Fr. Charlie, has chosen the path of demolition,"&nbsp;the society said.

But along with the decree that would ultimately allow the building to be razed, the bishop issued a statement that outlined the reasoning behind the decision, including continued population decline and the overall cost of the upkeep today and into the future.

The Diocese estimated the work would cost at least $300,000 to save the building — and another $1 million would be required to continue with upkeep, noting spending such a large amount of money would raise moral concerns.

While the money needed to keep the building intact creates a significant challenge to its preservation, the preservation society noted the demolition costs may also carry a hefty price tag.

"The Diocese estimates that it will cost about $300,000 to repair the building," the statement said. "The bishop does not, however, indicate how the costs of demolition will be covered. It should be noted that much of the cost of the demolition of&nbsp;St. Ann Catholic Church in Zurich in 2010 was borne by the parishioners of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville."

They fear a similar situation may occur with the closest parish to St. Peter.

"Although it has not been announced, the cost of demolition may fall to Christ the King Parish in WaKeeney and&nbsp;St. Michael’s Parish in Collyer," they said. "Few, if any, of the 80- and 90-year-old former parishioners of&nbsp;St. Anthony’s Church are known to be members of Christ the King or&nbsp;St. Michael’s."

"The church is in need of repairs, but the costs to demolish the building to be within EPA guidelines, as well as other health and safety standards will be very costly, probably in the hundreds of thousands of dollars," the society said. "Bishop Vincke does not mention in his letter to the parishioners that is being published in the Catholic Register who will be responsible for the costs of inspections, demolition permitting, disposal of hazardous waste materials, and other associated costs."

But Vincke said even if the desire and funds materialize to save the church now, the future should also be considered.

"While there may be some who want to see the St. Anthony church building saved, there is no guarantee that others will want to step forward and keep the project going when these people have passed," he said. "Such a board would be responsible for seeing to the mowing of the grass, cleaning of the interior, maintaining the plumbing, boiler, air conditioning, doing regular inspections of the building to keep ahead of needed maintenance, repairs, etc. Will there be interested people 25 or 50 years from now who will embrace these duties? Since that is unlikely, then a future group of people will be faced with the same decision that now confronts us."

But the society said it will continue efforts to save the church by appealing the decision, something it claims is within the purview of canon law.

"Since funding will be needed for repairs or demolition, The Preservation Society is filing an appeal to save the church and bring it into repair with the intent to hold a minimum of two Masses annually, as well as to make it a modern-day place of prayer and quiet for visitors who come to&nbsp;St.&nbsp;Peter&nbsp;searching for their Volga-German ancestry and an understanding of the deep faith of their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents who built the great community of&nbsp;St.&nbsp;Peter."

With the effort, the society is seeking support from anyone who wants to be involved with the church's preservation.

Despite Diocese decision, group remains committed to saving St. Peter church

Except I am not qualified to judge musicians — my forte is public speaking. I love judging 4-H model meetings, FFA discussion meets and any other speaking contests. I enjoy sharing my life-tested knowledge in hopes of helping participants improve their skills for the future. As much as I enjoy judging contests, it is a behavior I am constantly working to avoid in real life. Both my religion and my character remind me it is not my place to judge others. I rarely know all the details of a situation or the history that has shaped the people involved. More importantly, it is likely not any of my business, and I should just try to worry about judging my own actions and using my criticism to make myself a better person. I am not perfect though. Lately there is one behavior that that turns my head and sends me into a judgmental spiral every time — passive selfishness. I am not talking about outright, obvious selfishness most of us see clearly and condemn. &nbsp;I see passive selfishness as what happens when we let ourselves believe we as individuals do not have an obligation to the needs of our communities and our own desires are more important than what society needs.&nbsp; For example, I can become irrationally infuriated if someone needs a reason to do something good, like donating blood. I can’t understand how a person doesn’t have guilt over the choice that could potentially save a life. Community involvement might be the hardest-hit victim of passive selfishness. I remember a friend in college asking me why I would give up my nights and weekends for volunteer work or activities benefiting the college. At the time, I was taken aback because growing up in a small farming town, I had been surrounded by community-oriented people my whole life. Since then, I have seen so many examples of people who want to live in thriving communities but won’t serve on boards or volunteer to help with events and others who complain about politicians on social media but don’t show up to town halls, vote or even run in opposition. When we are willing to sacrifice our own comforts or desires, our communities are impacted in lasting ways. Sometimes it takes a small inconvenience like a needle prick and giving up an hour out of the 1,344 hours every eight weeks to save someone’s parent, sibling or child by donating blood. Other times it’s saying goodbye to the sweet dreams of sleeping in on Saturday to judge a 4-H speaking contest that encourages young people to grow their leadership and communication skills. Raising your hand to serve your community often means giving up time that you could be spending on your priorities to do work that will benefit others. That time isn’t wasted it allows you to set an example of what it takes to make the world better and will often give you more satisfaction than accomplishing something that only benefits a single person. It might seem like being selfish is the easy way, but I’m comforted by the knowledge that when you give, you receive so much more than you could ever imagine. I know we’re all guilty of the occasional personal indulgence, but it’s always good to reflect and really ask yourself if you could be doing more. &nbsp;The only way our communities grow stronger is if people make the choice to put them first. We can make excuses, or we can make our communities better. I hope everyone can experience the benefits&nbsp;and rewards&nbsp;of making them better.

Each year, the Topeka Capital-Journal chooses the All-State Academic Team, a recognition of the best and brightest young minds the Sunflower State has to offer. One graduating senior per high school in Kansas can be nominated by their principal or guidance counselor for consideration. &nbsp; Isabel Peine, a senior at Thomas More Prep-Marian High School, has been nominated for the 2021 Gannett Kansas All State Academic Team. Isabel is the daughter of Derek and Sarah Peine. She plans to attend university and study engineering.&nbsp;

The grand opening of Tebo’s Corner, which features the Graham County Auto and Art Museum, will be Saturday.

The event will start at 10 a.m. The museum is at the intersection of U.S. Highways 24 and 283.&nbsp;

The idea for an auto and art museum came from a Hill City native, Fred Pratt.

Donations from Stephen Tebo, a 1962 graduate of Hill City High School and owner of Tebo Properties, in Boulder, Colo; Hill City area businesses; Dane G. Hansen Foundation; and local community foundation allowed the museum to purchase the Dean’s Service gas station.

The gas station was renovated and expanded to complete the now 8,000-square-foot museum, which was designed to attract both locals and tourists passing through the town’s major intersection of U.S. 24 and 283. &nbsp;

For the first time in 10 years, the 1964 Cadillac hearse that transported former President John F. Kennedy’s body from Parkland Memorial Hospital to Air Force One after his death in November 1963 will be on display to the public.

The vehicle, which Tebo purchased at a car collector’s auction in 2012, will join other classic cars from a portion of his personal collection.

These include a 1936 Cadillac Convertible, a 1929 Pierce Arrow, a 1924 Duesenberg and a 1922 Model T.

The display of classic cars will also include local automobiles — a Model T that was featured in the movie “Paper Moon,” a 1967 Pontiac, a 1942 Chevy Sudan and a 1969 Camero.

Antique tractors and several vintage motorcycles are also part of the collection. Tebo’s contributions from his collection will rotate frequently, so visitors will be able to see updated exhibits on a regular basis.&nbsp;

“After a tumultuous year, I’m honored to not only help provide something to bring the community together again but to help restore the vitality of the downtown area,” said Tebo, who fondly remembers his first job at 8 years old shining shoes at Rex’s Barbershop, which was located down the street from where Tebo’s Corner exists today. “The local board of directors has done a tremendous job at getting this done.”

Cory Simoneau, president of the Graham County Auto and Art Museum, said, “The location of the museum offers a great opportunity to bring more tourism to Hill City and benefit the community as a whole.

“We hope this will help to sustain many of the surrounding local businesses that have suffered over the last year because of the pandemic.”

The museum will feature a small arts and crafts store at the front entrance to attract both art and automobile enthusiasts and will host a public grand opening Saturday.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting and a luncheon following. Tickets may be purchased for $5 at the museum, and participants will have available a free-will donation luncheon.

There  also will be several raffles featuring two heirloom quilts made by Stephanie Simoneau and Phyllis Weller as well as other items. &nbsp;

Following the grand opening, the museum will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays with an admission fee of $5.

Three-day weather outlook

A focus of 4-H is to empower young people with the skills to lead for a lifetime. The research-based learning provides many avenues for 4-H youth to practice life skills such as caring for others and their community, leadership, and day-to-day areas such as preparing healthy meals, time management, and communication skills.

A few years ago, I read an article from HealthyWay.com written by Mary Sauer titled, “7 Things Kids Need To Do For Themselves Before They Turn 13”.&nbsp;

According to Ms. Sauer, “Turning 13 is a major milestone. For many kids, it feels like one big step toward adulthood. Of course, teenagers don’t just take on the responsibilities of growing older on their own because they’ve turned a page on a calendar. Parents play a big role in guiding their kids by equipping them with the skills they need to take care of themselves and contribute to society”.

This sounds a lot like 4-H to me! Another important aspect of 4-H is the ability to work with caring adults who guide and mentor them. While much of this can be project specific, knowing that a club leader, photography leader, or beef superintendent is working to provide opportunities for a youth to expand their horizons or improve their skills is invaluable.&nbsp;

As a Doniphan County 4-H member, I can’t imagine the hours that my sewing leader spent in the church basement with many young ones trying to work their mom’s portable sewing machine. I can tell you that, to this day, I know how to sew a French seam and put in a zipper because Mrs. D worked with me to do it over and over again until it was just right! She was also the first to celebrate with you when hard work paid off by good comments from the judge or earned an exhibit at the Kansas State Fair.&nbsp;

In the article by Ms. Sauer, she notes the seven things a youth should be able to do for themselves by age 13 include:

Money Matters – understand the basics of money and how to manage their own. She notes that this is best taught by modeling and practice. Do you talk openly with your youth about spending decisions, how you save, where you choose to give charitably? She stresses that a 13-year-old should understand and practice habits like giving and spending, and consequences when you run out.

Scheduling Solutions – I know, I know – I had a hard time with this as a parent also! Ms. Sauer recommends shifting the responsibility of getting up and to activities to their shoulders…..and letting then bear the consequences when they fail. “This might mean they have to face a frustrated teacher or discipline from a coach who expects them to be at practice by a certain time. And that’s okay. Sometime consequences that come from outside the family leave the most lasting impression.” Occasionally as a family, it is important to evaluate if the number of activities are helping or harming family time and overwhelming youth in the process.

Courteous Communication – This is a two-way street and can be difficult on both sides. We teach a lot about communication in 4-H (truly the crucial life skills at Club Day and the fair). “If your new teen wishes to be treated like an adult – and most do – they need to communicate with other adults with respect and clarity,” Ms. Sauer states. Our dinner table conversations were often loud, and to visitors probably argumentative, but my kids knew that there were very few topics that were off-limits but they had better be prepared to argue their case AND listen to other viewpoints. They didn’t get it right every time and we occasionally had to call a time-out or move everyone on to a different topic but they were practicing communication skills and social interactions.

Body Basics – Learning self-care skills is important for good hygiene but also to develop a healthy body image and self-confidence.

Housekeeping Habits – Per Ms. Sauer’s article, “Your teen is a member of your household, and it is perfectly acceptable to expect them to do their part around the home. Before the age of 13, your child should know how to do their own laundry, pick up after themselves, and clean the kitchen.” In 4-H, we have curriculum about cooking basic meals and packing healthy lunches or snacks that they are capable of making. Young people don’t suddenly learn these skills when they turn 18 or 20; they need practice in order to grow into independent adults. It is often faster to pack their lunch (remember that Scheduling Solutions section) or clean their room but the lesson they have learned is either they are not good/smart enough OR they should expect someone else to do it for them.

Academic Achievements – The article states “Most parents place a high priority on helping their teens reach their full potential, but by micromanaging your teen’s academics you do more harm than good. Parents should find a balance, encouraging their teen and supporting them without doing the work for them or rescuing them from academic failure.” Some students do need more assistance but most students should be able to meet deadlines, keep up their homework, and show up to class on time. These are important life skills for success in education at every level and in life. If you don’t show up for work on time and aren’t prepared for your tasks, you typically don’t stay employed very long!&nbsp;

Navigation Necessities – As middle-school students, my kids were learning to read a map (on very long cattle trips!) and airport boards. We practiced these things in small doses and both are accomplished travelers both in the US and abroad. As Ms. Sauer notes, “Whether they’re catching a ride with another parent or walking to and from school, being able to get themselves where they need to go will bring them one step closer to independence.” Activities in 4-H provide great opportunities for practicing these skills in small doses: camp, Discovery Days, Kansas Youth Leadership Forum, Citizenship In Action – all have increased levels of independence which comes with the responsibility of showing up in the right places at the right time!

Ms. Sauer concludes her article, “The truth is, consequences of the mistakes your teen might make now are far less risky than releasing them into adulthood without the skills they need to care for themselves, engage in adult relationships, or manage their time and money.

I wonder if Ms. Sauer was a 4-H member! 4-H provides so many great opportunities for youth to learn and practice skills that will help them be successful adults.

For the first time as Fort Hays State University president, Tisa
Mason presented the Ellis County Commission with a university update Monday.

Mason said that while the university saw a decrease in enrollment
during the COVID-19 pandemic they were able to avoid furloughs and layoffs.

“From the beginning, until this moment, Fort Hays State has
not had any furloughs, our any layoffs or any loss of position due to COVID-19,”
Mason said. 

“KU, K-State, Emporia State and Pitt State all cut positions
and according to the Chronicle of Higher Education, 12 percent of jobs in higher education were
lost in 2020 with more to come in 2021,” Mason said. “Because of the support of
the city, the county (and) the community at large Fort Hays continues to a be
strong institution and we’ve not had to make these type of decisions.”

When the shutdown went into effect, Mason said the university
continued to provide salaries to all employees and student workers on campus,
even if they couldn’t perform their job.

“We wanted to keep their wallets strong so they could keep
our economy strong,” Mason said. 

Mason also added that Fort Hays State was the only Regents institution that never altered its academic calendar. Students took all
scheduled breaks, including spring break.

As things continue to improve, Mason told the commission that
the university will begin returning to pre-COVID practices June 1.

“People will no longer be working remotely. We’ve already unlocked
all of our building doors and taken down directional signs in stairwells.
Summer classes, the few that happen on campus, will be back at full capacity,”
Mason said. “Fall 2021 will on campus as normal, unless of course things
change."

Mason said the university will not require students to get
the COVID-19 vaccine. Facility and staff have been able to get the vaccine if
they want it and she said they will continue to make it available for those who
are interested in getting it.

“We are not requiring it for housing. We are not requiring it
for enrollment,” Mason said. “We are not requiring it.”

Mason said enrollment declined nearly
900 total students. The decrease included nearly 300 on campus and 150 online
students.

Mason said they believe that it might take a couple of years to
get those numbers back up and they are working on a strategic plan to continue
growing the campus with the goal of 5,000 on campus students. There was about
4,100 students on campus this past year.

“We are planning for flat on campus enrollment this fall and
then to start building and hopefully we will be back and start exceeding those
goals to go that that 5,000 in the next two years.

The drop in the number of online students, Mason said, was
because a lot of them are adult students who had to take care of their children’s
education at home.

“We are doing a comeback program, scholarshipping people
will jump right back in online with us and so far we are seeing some success
for the for fall,” Mason said.

Mason said they had a record retention rate with 78 percent of
freshmen returning for the spring semester after taking classes in the fall.

The university’s economic impact on the region took a hit
during the pandemic as well.

In 2018, the university contributed more than $233 million
in Ellis County and the four surrounding counties. 

Last year, that number dropped to $188 million — a decrease of
about $45 million, according to Mason.

Construction on campus also continues to be a large
investment into the local economy. 

Mason said over the past years they have built or renovated eight
facilities for a more than $100 million in investments. She said they estimate
more than $76 million of that money involved local contractors.

They are hearing some frustration that students are getting
hired on locally as much as they had been. Mason said the Docking Institute is
going to launch a student employment survey to look into it further.

Mason also thanked the county for funds provided through the
CARES Act. She said the university used the $209,000 to provide hotels for students,
who lived in the residence halls that needed to be isolated. They also provided
those students with food vouchers with the CARES dollars.

She also thanked Ellis County Health Services Director Jason
Kennedy for his work with Fort Hays State. Kennedy serves on the Mason’s
external advisory board.

After a high 65 degree high temperature Sunday, Monday night brought a freeze warning and spring snow to Hays.

The K-State Agricultural Research Center south of town measured an official six-inch snowfall, yielding 0.22 inches of moisture.

The overnight low was 23 degrees after a high of 45 degrees Monday.&nbsp;

The snow began quickly melting this morning as the storm system moved out to the southeast and the sun appeared.&nbsp;

So far in April, Hays has received 1.22 inches of moisture.&nbsp;

The year-to-date total is 6.70 inches, more than two inches above the 4.61 average accumulation by the end of April.&nbsp;

The National Weather Service in Dodge City has posted another freeze warning for tonight into Wednesday morning.

Six inches of spring snow falls in Hays

MANHATTAN — Amidst a growing concern for a lack of access to veterinary services in rural Kansas, a group of statewide organizations and higher education leadership have combined resources to form the Rural Veterinary Workforce Development Taskforce. The objective of RVWD is to promote the development and retention of excellent veterinarians to ensure a long-term adequate supply of rural practitioners to serve the needs of agricultural communities.

The taskforce has developed an online survey where livestock producers are encouraged to provide feedback and give these issues a voice. Concerns growing about fewer veterinary services in rural Kansas

A recently published book edited by Pamela Shaffer of Hays tells of missonaries' early encounters with the native culture of Papua New Guinea.

Pamela Shaffer, a former Fort Hays State University professor, has compiled a selection of letters from her uncle Bishop Firmin M. Schmidt to his sister, Mary, during the bishop's missionary work in Papua New Guinea.

"Letters to Mary: A Missionary Writes Home from New Guinea, 1959-1963" includes 55 letters that tell of the early missionary work done in&nbsp;Papua New Guinea, which is part of an island north of Australia.

"I began to read them for just curiosity," Shaffer said. "I found that the letters were quite interesting. I felt that they would be the subject of an interesting book."

She said she thought the letters needed a wider audience.

"It was about a culture that was really not far out of the stone age," she said. "It was just an interesting group of people he was working with."

Firmin was born in 1918,&nbsp; the youngest of eight children. He was raised in Catharine. He attended St. Joseph Military Academy and St. Joseph's College. Both were co-administered by Capuchin Franciscan priests.&nbsp;

Not only did Firmin have a deep faith, but he was committed to intellectual pursuits, winning his class medal for scholarship all four years of high school and both years of junior college, Shaffer said.

Firmin was a theological scholar and had not considered himself for missionary work, Shaffer said. However, after being appointed to the position in Papua New Guinea he wrote to his sister that he was honored.

"While I'm aware of the problems and obstacles involved in this assignment, I am delighted and thrilled," he said in the letter. "I must admit it was a real shock at first; but after I recovered somewhat, I gradually came to realize that this is undoubtedly one of the finest thing that ever happened to me."

The missions in New&nbsp;Guinea were in a mountainous area with very rough terrain. Firmin writes in his letters about traveling by plane, Land Rover and motorcycle to visit the remote missions and villages.

Firmin described many of native people's beliefs and rituals in his letters to his sister.

"I think they were fascinating to him and in some ways horrifying," Shaffer said.

The natives people lived in long huts made of native materials, such as sticks and feathers. The floors were dirt. The huts were heated with open fires with no way to ventilate the smoke.&nbsp;

The women lived separately from the men with the women responsible for caring for small children, tending gardens and raising pigs. The boys moved into the men's hunts between the ages of 5 and 7.

"They didn't have family life like we would say in the U.S., because the mother, father and children didn't live together," Shaffer said.

Pigs were a form of wealth among the people at that time. Protein was a rare part of the native people's diet. Their staple was sweet potatoes, which they called kaukau. Pigs were slaughtered at special occasions, such as weddings, funerals or spirit festivals.

Firmin describes a church service in one of his letters and explained the women of the village brought their pigs to the services on ropes.

The native people of&nbsp;Papua New Guinea believed in spirits called tambarans. Some of these spirits were good, some were bad and some were both good and bad.

The natives conducted feasts called sing-sings to honor the tambarans. They built long huts — at least 400 yards— for the sing-sings. Pigs were butchered and roasted in pits covered with leaves.

Sometimes the pork was undercooked, and Frimin said in his letters that people would be sick after these feasts and he was unsure if this was because they ate too much or they had eaten undercooked pork.

The native people also had interesting ways of showing grief, Shaffer said.&nbsp;They would slit their earlobes to show grief, and relatives would cover their bodies with mud, she said.

"If someone was especially sad about the person that died, they might chop off the first digit of a finger," she said. ... "They did it to show how much they were grieving, but here's the kicker, in doing that they got a bigger portion of pork."

Pigs were also used in bride prices.&nbsp;

Men were looking for women who were strong and could grow a lot of gardens, Shaffer said.The young man who had his eye on a young women, would go to her father to make a deal on a bride price. In addition to pigs, the bride price could include a specific shell that was used as a currency. The shells were valued about $5 to $6, which was a huge sum at that time, Shaffer said."Sometimes they didn't even tell the young women that she was the object of the bartering," Shaffer said.Young men usually married in their early 20s, and the girls were usually married in their mid- to late teens.If the young woman didn't like the young man, she might run away into the bush in hopes her father would relent and return the bride price.The bride price was an essential part of the papuan economy, and Firmin new that it was a practice the Christian missionaries would have to accept, Shaffer said.Because the Papuan people had no real money system, restitution was literally paid for in blood. If one tribe killed more men in a war than another tribe, the winning tribe would have to offer up the difference in lives to the losing tribe.When the Australian government took over the country, they put a stop to this practice.Shaffer said she hopes readers will not only glean an understanding of the early culture of Papua New Guinea but the persistence and hard work that went into developing the missions on the island.Her uncle did not seek to change the beliefs of the adults, but sought to teach and convert the village children to Christianity, Shaffer said.Priests first started schools for boys on the island, but a group of nuns later joined the missions to offer education to girls. The native&nbsp;Papuan people had no written language."The women were certainly second class. The men always ran the show, but the women always did all of the work," Shaffer said. "There was that imbalance. The priests saw that, and they knew they had to begin educating girls."Today, New Guinea is a very different place, but not all of the changes have been positive.&nbsp;Prior to the establishment of the missions, men did not work, except to prepare for a sing-sing, a funeral or war. However, crime has become a problem on the island, and women are still second-class citizens."I think it's a glimpse into the past. I don't know that is critically important," Shaffer said, "but it gives those who might read the book an idea of what type of person Msgr.
