ELLIS — Peppered throughout the
downtowns of cities across northwest Kansas, many century-old buildings are quietly
falling into complete disrepair — silently awaiting an inglorious demolition.

Among those buildings is an occasional
church, at one time a point of pride for communities, but with congregations
long disbanded and little commercial interest, these centers of worship far too frequently suffer the same fate as many of those other old buildings as populations
decline.

But for the 112-year-old Ellis
Congregational Church, a daily stream of community members still take advantage
of the building’s hand-hewn limestone walls.

The building is home to the Ellis
Nutrition Center, where prior to COVID-19, community seniors would gather daily
to enjoy a hot meal together and the local Rotary Club, where members find ways
to serve the community.

A few times a year the chapel, adorned
in simple Christian iconography, even continues in the shadow of its original purpose,
as a host to community weddings.

Perhaps most notably, the building is also
the home of the Bukovina Society, one of three museums in Ellis, a feature
rarely seen in a town of of its size.

“This whole town is full of history,”
said Guy Windholz, Bukovina Society museum curator. “You’ll see here Walter P.
Chrysler, we have the Railroad Museum, and we have this ancestral museum. … You
show me a town with 2,000 population that has three museums of significance
that attract tourism. I don’t know where it is at.”

Since the disbanding of the
congregation in 1973 and the subsequent creation of the Ellis Arts and
Historical Society to oversee the building and its use, great care has been
given to maintain the old church, but even the hardiest building materials cannot&nbsp;hold up forever against the biting cold, terrible wind and torrential downpours
that plague the area.

Water has deteriorated the wood around
the original stained-glass windows, the roofs of the building's two towers are
leaking water into the pressed-tin ceilings, and soft stone and mortar
have worn down, creating dips and gaps in the exterior.

Now, caretakers for the building are
reaching out to the public in order to help secure funding that will allow a
grant application of $50,000 to be submitted that would be used to alleviate
some of the most pressing concerns and allow the facility to continue serving
the community well into the future.

In December, Gov. Laura Kelly announced
applications were open for the Kansas Historical Society’s Kansas Rural Preservation
grant program.

“The Kansas Historical Society has been actively
working to preserve and share Kansas history for nearly 150 years,”&nbsp;Kelly then said. “The Paul Bruhn grants will go a long way
in ensuring historic properties across the state can get the upkeep and
treatment they need, so we can continue to celebrate and learn about our rich
history for generations to come.”

The church qualifies for the grant — a non-government building listed on the National Register of Historic Places in a community of
less than 30,000 people.

After learning of the grant program, Perry Henman, Ellis
Arts and History president, was approached and along with the organization’s
board, including Windholz. They decided to apply for the full amount of
$50,000, but to be eligible for that full amount, the organization must raise a
10 percent match.

The grant application is due March 1, but they
believe they will raise the money from the community in time and will continue
to raise funds that will be used for repairs — even if the grant is not awarded.

Ellis Alliance
Executive Director Sophia Henrickson will oversee the funds as grant
administrator.

Donations can be submitted to Henrickson at the Ellis
Alliance office, 820 Washington, in person or via mail, and should be made out
to the Community Foundation of Ellis.

“The Ellis Alliance office and the Community Foundation
is excited and happy to help projects like this and excited to see people in
the community take them on and hopefully it can help beautification and
tourism,” Henrickson said.

Keeping the building in good repair and usable for
the foreseeable future, is seen as important for the community, not just for
the group's currently using the facility, but also for community members now and
in the future.

“Ellis doesn’t have a true community center,” Henman
said. 

But the building frequently will be used for things like
family reunions and celebrations.

“It’s a community building downstairs, basically,” he
said. 

And, as home to the Bukovina Society, the building is
not just important to locals, but to those communities that immigrated to
locations across the Americas.

“You have people from all over the United States and
actually from all over the world that come visit,” Henman said. 

In fact, the largest group of Bukovinia immigrants settled
in Ellis and was the largest population of the group outside of the area that is
now located in Austria, bringing with them their religious traditions.

“This was a congregational church,” Henman said, as Bukovina
immigrants, unlike the Volga-German populations that also settled throughout
the region were not all the same faith.

The congregation that built the church had early in
the cities history and had been meeting in a simple wooden building constructed
in 1873.

By 1906, the congregation had decided to build a more permanent
worship building, built in an eclectic style, borrowing heavily from the Gothic
Revival architecture and constructed with the same limestone often
used in early Ellis County settlements and which can be seen in many
churches built in that era throughout the county.

The land was donated by businessman, banker and
church trustee J.S. Nicholson and his wife Annie, both prominent members of the
community and great-great-grandparents of Henman.

It would built by Tony Jacobs and Chris Wise, who are
noted for building many prominent structures in early Hays, including the Saint
Anthony’s hospital, the Lamar Hotel, now known as the Chestnut Building in
downtown Hays and Thomas More Prep-Marion, originally Saint Joseph College.

Outside of the removal of a bell tower in 1952, the old
church is virtually the same as it was when they completed construction and the
congregation began meeting there in 1907.

And planned repairs would not change that.

A major portion of the grant would be used to remove
the tower roofs, to be replaced with new materials and designed to better
ensure water can flow from the roof and new flashing to keep the water out of
the building.

The grant would also be used to fix and restore the integrity
of the mortar and address wear on the lower limestone blocks worn from over 100
years of wind and rain.

The wood holding the stained-glass windows in place
will also be addressed, and the protective screens that cover those windows will
be replaced with new glass coverings to ensure the original windows can be enjoyed
by future generations.

While the group is hopeful they will be awarded the
full $50,000, they will be grateful for any amount given and Henman said they
will prioritize repairs to use the award as efficiently as possible.

“We will fix what we can,” Henman said. 

“We will prioritize stuff, but certainly the towers
are number one because if we don’t stop the water from migrating in — then we
are in trouble,” Windholz said.

While they wait from donations to come in and hope for good
outcome on the grant application, Windholz said the building will continue to
serve the community.

“We are keeping this building alive. … Activities are
keeping this building alive and vibrant,” he said.

A little bit goes a long way: Ellis groups solicits fund for historic church repairs

City Manager Toby Dougherty this week announced the appointment of Kerry Tiernan as the new golf course superintendent for the Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course. He assumed his duties Feb. 14.&nbsp;

Tiernan has 15 years of experience with the Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course as the golf course foreman. A Beloit native, Tiernan moved to Hays in 2003 where he attended Fort Hays State University.&nbsp;

“The Fort is one of the best public golf courses in the state. Kerry has played a significant role in helping achieve that status," Dougherty said. "As superintendent he will ensure The Fort continues to operate at a high level for many years to come.”

Hays High School Principal Martin Straub and O'Loughlin Elementary Principal Viki Gile have announced their retirements at the end of June.

Straub has his wife, Mary, are both retiring from USD 489. Straub has been the principal at HHS for eight years and was an assistant principal at HHS for 19 years.

Mary Straub is a reading teacher at Roosevelt Elementary School.

Martin Straub said via email Tuesday he and his wife both plan to find jobs after their careers in education.&nbsp;

Gile has been with the district for five years.

Our first beef calves of the season arrived a few days into February. Each day into calving season temperatures grew colder, and our lives transitioned from normal routines to the highly vigilant survival mode required to weather the arctic storm. 

My quiet moments during this bitterly cold stretch have been filled with reflections on the farming and ranching lifestyle. Calving through a storm is hard work that takes a kind of deep, character-refining strength.

It takes strong logic to overcome a pull on your heartstrings that comes when you take a brand new calf away from a momma cow minutes after it is born. Farmers do this because they know that no matter how hard the cow tries to clean up her baby, she will never get it dry enough by herself in frigid temperatures. Spending a few hours under a heat lamp keeps the baby warm until she is dry enough to survive in the cold.

It takes strong purpose to put the needs of the herd before your own comfort. During the run-on days of the storm, farmers miss meals, delay bathroom breaks, ditch their gloves and lose the feeling their hands while milking a cow to teach a calf to nurse. They ruin clothing, end up with soiled vehicles, and may even sacrifice their bathtubs to the needs of the newborns.

It takes physical strength to chop through the layers of ice in water tanks or safely wrestle a 50-pound calf into the passenger seat of your pickup to move it to the warming shed. Farmers don’t give a second thought to the bruise forming on their leg from a baby calves’ flailing legs or the soreness in their muscles after long physical days because aches and pains seem like a small price to pay to protect the herd.  

It takes mental strength to wake at all hours of the night after a scarce 30-minute nap and reach a state of alertness to identify signs of distress during a frequent pen checks. Farmers make constant rounds day and night in the cold because they know that a cow may have a quick or a difficult labor. Being vigilant helps farmers to provide needed assistance as quickly as possible.  

It takes emotional strength not to feel weighed down with guilt when a calf is born in subzero temperatures and you just did not get there quick enough to save it. Farmers do not have the luxury of dwelling on what went wrong. They have to get back to helping their remaining animals and trying their best not to lose another one.

Calving through a storm is hard, but it is the kind of hard that’s worthwhile.

My most surprising reflection is that this storm has made me better. I feel a little bit like leaving the gym after a strength training session. My mind and body are exhausted, but I feel joy, peace and contentment. What looked so daunting at the beginning was overcome through perseverance and exercising logic, selflessness, compassion, wisdom and humility.

You may never have the chance to help a farm or ranch survive a calving season storm, but we all have storms in our lives. Opportunity to exercise our character by putting the needs of others before our own comfort; taking the uncomfortable steps to help others who cannot help themselves; and forgiving ourselves or letting go of things beyond our control. And we all have the strength to weather these storms.

Three-day weather outlook

I never feel like I catch as many coyotes as I should, so now that we had a little snow on the ground, I decided to drive around to a few properties where I’d had coyote traps this year to see if there were tracks in the snow. I drove across a couple fields of soybean stubble to a spot clear in the middle of a section where the bean stubble bordered an overgrown pasture. 

At one end of the field was the deep drainage ditch known locally as the “big ditch,” and several game trails going down the far side of the ditch and ending up in front of me on the other side were covered with fresh coyote tracks in the snow. I set snares in 3 of the trails, and the second morning one snare held the body of a coyote so terribly infected with mange that it was barely recognizable. The poor critter hardly had enough fur on its entire body to cover a pair of ear muffs.

After a discussion with my wife during which I whole-heartedly disputed a story she had heard about mange being intentionally introduced, I did some research. I found story-after-story and record-after-record verifying that fact. Between 1883 and 1918, Montana paid over $340,000 in bounties for the killing of more than 80,000 wolves. Seeking a cheaper method of control, for wolves and coyotes, a 1905 Montana law provided for the capture of a number of wild wolves and coyotes that were then intentionally infected with Sarcoptic mange and released back into the wild.&nbsp;

Sarcoptic Mange is a disease found in canines, both wild and domestic, caused by Sarcoptic Mites. These parasitic mites burrow into the skin, causing intense scratching and resulting hair loss, weakness and very possibly death as the infected animal loses most or all of its fur and becomes too weak to hunt. The hair loss usually begins on the tail and hind legs then slowly works its way across the animal’s entire body. Cold temperatures will not kill the mites as they are burrowed into the skin, so the mites won’t die until the coyote dies. Mange is highly treatable in domestic canines but obviously not in wild foxes, wolves and coyotes, thus it can wreak havoc with wild populations. I think most trappers here in the Midwest catch a few coyotes with mange every year. It’s not entirely known what kind of survival rate to expect, but that seems to be highly determined by winter conditions in the area. Our local conservation officer pointed out to me that despite some periods of frigid temperatures and a few snow storms, the last several winters have been fairly mild here in Kansas, possible allowing some infected animals to survive. It’s also thought that young coyote pups contracting mange will most certainly die. Mange is very transmittable from one animal to another, and the higher the wild population of that particular species, the more chances to transmit the disease. Coyotes are very family-oriented and live in family groups, so the mites have ample opportunities to spread throughout the entire family group.&nbsp;

Human infections of mange are extremely rare and short lived and are easily treated medically. Also, mange from wildlife very rarely transfers to domestic animals or livestock. Despite the rare likelihood of transmission, hunters and trappers should handle infected animals with gloves and should throw away or disinfect those gloves afterward. Carcasses of dead mange-infected animals can be buried or burned, or at very least left someplace where dogs or wild canines will not feed on them.

Most people take a dim view of coyotes because they can be such ruthless predators, so when trappers talk of disease problems among the coyote population most folks barely bat an eye. As stated above, the larger the coyote population, the easier it is for disease to get a foothold. Trapping is proven to be a very effective tool in controlling predator populations, and thus helping to control diseases.  </figure>I never feel like I catch as many coyotes as I should, so now that we had a little snow on the ground, I decided to drive around to a few properties where I’d had coyote traps this year to see if there were tracks in the snow. I drove across a couple fields of soybean stubble to a spot clear in the middle of a section where the bean stubble bordered an overgrown pasture. At one end of the field was the deep drainage ditch known locally as the “big ditch,” and several game trails going down the far side of the ditch and ending up in front of me on the other side were covered with fresh coyote tracks in the snow. I set snares in 3 of the trails, and the second morning one snare held the body of a coyote so terribly infected with mange that it was barely recognizable. The poor critter hardly had enough fur on its entire body to cover a pair of ear muffs.After a discussion with my wife during which I whole-heartedly disputed a story she had heard about mange being intentionally introduced, I did some research. I found story-after-story and record-after-record verifying that fact. Between 1883 and 1918, Montana paid over $340,000 in bounties for the killing of more than 80,000 wolves. COLBY — Colby Community College welcomed Justin Villmer as the new vice president of business affairs and chief financial officer. He began his role on Feb. 4.&nbsp;

"My life was greatly impacted by an accounting instructor when I attended a community college," Villmer said. "I genuinely believe in the opportunities of the two-year sector of higher education.&nbsp;&nbsp;Colby Community College provides a space where life change can happen, and I am excited to be a part of it."&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Villmer began his career in banking and public accounting and entered higher education to serve as the accounting manager at Hutchinson Community College for three years. He was the assistant dean and director of finance for Washburn University Institute of Technology for three and a half years before arriving at CCC.&nbsp; &nbsp;

"We are very excited to add Vice President Villmer to our team," said President Dr. Seth Carter. "He has administrative experience at two other Kansas institutions that will be invaluable in moving Colby Community College forward."

Villmer has lived in Kansas most of his life. After obtaining an associate degree from Hutchinson, he attended Emporia State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business and a Master of Accountancy.&nbsp;He and his wife Jessica have six children that range from 10 months to nine years. Outside of work, Villmer enjoys fishing, camping, backpacking, road trips, and attending concerts.&nbsp;

He filled the position previously held by Carolyn Kasdorf, who began in January at Indiana University South Bend as vice chancellor of administration and finance.

Dry and windy conditions result in fires popping up across the area. 

After Ellis County crews extinguished a grass fire west of US Highway 183 in northern Ellis County, another grass fire erupted in northern Russell County.

The second fire was at 180th Street and Shoreline Road in Russell County.&nbsp;

Although the fire was extinguished by late afternoon, crews were still at both locations dealing with hot spots.

The total area burned in the Russell fire was not immediately available.

UPDATE: A grass fire in north Ellis County west of US Highway 183 was reported out about 2 p.m. today.

Another fire was reported in northwest Russell County about the same time the US 183 fire was extinguished.

US 183, which had been down to one lane of traffic, was reopened shortly after 2 p.m.

It was unknown immediately how many acres burned or any damage the fire may have caused.

Ellis County fire crews are battling a grass fire north of Hays Tuesday afternoon.

The fire is located north of Homestead Road and south of Saline River on the west side of US Highway 183.

At this time is unclear is any structures have been damaged in the fire but there are several pumping stations in the area.

Traffic is limited to one lane at this time.

THOMAS COUNTY —One person died in an accident just before 3:30a.m. Tuesday in Thomas County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2009 Freightliner semi driven by Alberto Garcia, 45,&nbsp; North Lauderdale, FL., was westbound&nbsp; on Interstate 70 at Thomas County Road K. 

The semi entered the median on the left. The driver tried to re-enter the roadway. The semi overturned onto the drivers side and came to rest in the median facing north west.

Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Baalmann Morturary in Colby. He was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

The Hays school board agreed Monday to let its architectural firm, DLR, move forward with a district perception survey.

The survey would not be directly related to a bond issues, but Superintendent Ron Wilson said he thought this would be the first step in any successful bond attempt.

The survey will be conducted by phone and include 300 stakeholders in the district. The school district will be divided into four quadrants with equal representation coming from each of the four areas.

The proposed survey would ask questions about such topics as facilities, quality of education, the school board, the district's fiscal responsibility and student safety.

The district has the option of adding an online survey. Board President Mike Walker said an online survey would not be scientific, but could help further gauge public opinion.

He added he thought an online survey would help the broader community feel as if they have a chance to speak their minds.

Board member Tammy Wellbrock said via an online link she supported the survey. She said the survey would be important for the board in future decision making, as well as gauging the unknown effects of COVID on the community.

No timeline has been set for the survey, but Wilson said he thought the survey will be done in March.

There will be no initial cost to the district for the survey. The district will eventually pay DLR for its services if a bond passes.

BUNKER HILL — Not seeing some of the shows on Smoky Hills PBS that you are used to seeing?&nbsp; Unfortunately, Smoky Hills PBS was affected by the extreme weather conditions last week.

Due to a power surge that took place in Bunker Hill on Tuesday, Feb. 16th, it caused several issues with equipment within our Master Control operations.&nbsp; Because of these issues, we are currently passing through national PBS programming with no localization.&nbsp; Meaning, no local programs and local scheduling that you enjoy by Smoky Hills PBS.&nbsp; The Kansas Legislature and Doctors on Call programs were also canceled last week due to these issues.&nbsp;

To add to the current situation, on the night of Feb.&nbsp;17th, a water pipe burst at Smoky Hills PBS, damaging more equipment and throwing Smoky Hills PBS off-air throughout most locations.&nbsp; Staff was able to get Smoky Hills PBS back on-air at approximately 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb.&nbsp;18th, but still without local programming.&nbsp;

Michael Quade, Smoky Hills PBS interim general manager, stated, “There is no doubt that these two events are going to impact Smoky Hills PBS in the next few months.&nbsp; What I know for sure is that we have the best staff to get us up and running as quickly as possible.&nbsp; We have received many calls of encouragement over the weekend and we want to thank everyone for the continued support! &nbsp; We&nbsp;ask everyone to be patient as we resolve these issues. We know you love our local programming, and we are working very hard to bring it back!”

It’s not clear when all our equipment will be back up and running.&nbsp;

A public hearing for a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) will be conducted Wednesday during the Ellis County Planning and Zoning Commission meeting.

CUP 2047 is requested by Industrial Tower West, LLC, as the agent for landowner Donald Lang, Victoria, for construction of a cellphone tower.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Ellis County Administrative Center, 718 Main, Hays.

In other business, the commission will also hear an update of the comprehensive plan and zoning regulations.&nbsp;

February’s 
history-making temperatures led to history-making conditions across the 
electric grid. Due to a shortage of natural gas, high electricity 
demand, and transmission overload coupled with low wind energy 
production, for the first time in its 80-year history, the Southwest 
Power Pool (SPP) had to direct rolling short-term electricity 
interruptions across its 14-state area.

The combination of lower 
supply and higher demand resulted in record high electric and natural 
gas prices. While Wheatland Electric does not yet know all the costs 
associated with this extreme weather event, we recognize our members are
 concerned about receiving an electric bill that is higher than usual.

 Electric is looking at ways to mitigate the impact these increased gas 
prices will have on your future electric bills. We apologize for the

Wheatland Electric addresses bill impacts during unprecedented energy crisis

U.S. crude futures prices jumped more than 3 percent Monday, topping $61 a barrel for the first time since early January of last year. By noon, the near-month contract for light sweet crude was up nearly $2 at $61.13 per barrel. London Brent was also up 3 percent at $64.65 per barrel. The government says gasoline inventories are increasing, signaling decreasing demand. But prices continue to rise at pumps across the country, largely due to spiking crude-oil prices. The Energy Information Administration says total motor gasoline inventories increased by 700,000 barrels last week and are about 1% above the five year average for this time of year. But gasoline prices have already topped last year's more than three dozen states. The motor club AAA said the gasoline price spike kept up with spiking crude-oil prices, and predicted both would soon top the highest prices of last year. The national average price at the pump last week was just over $2.57. Nearly 40 state average pump prices had already topped last year's highs, with half of those seeing double-digit increases. Kansas was the tenth cheapest state in the U.S. last week, with an average of just over $2.35 per gallon. That's up nearly eight cents over a week ago, and eighteen cents a gallon higher than a month ago. Filling up your 15-gallon tank cost just over $36, up more than a dollar from last week and nearly two dollars more than last month.&nbsp; Cold weather wreaked havoc in the oil patch last week. Output was down by more than two million barrels per day as the coldest weather in 30 years hits states that aren't used to it. Quoting unnamed traders and company executives, Bloomberg reported supply losses in the Permian Basin in Texas and New Mexico, along with the Eagle Ford play in southern Texas and the Anadarko basin in Oklahoma.&nbsp; The cold snap was good news for small natural gas producers. The freeze is giving a rare boost to a market that’s never recovered from a crash more than a ten years ago. As Texas output is disrupted by frozen pipes, prices have surged more than 4,000% in Oklahoma. &nbsp; The Rig Count in Kansas last week was unchanged statewide, down one east of Wichita and up one in Western Kansas. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service notes that operators have now reached total depth at new well in Ellis County and another in Stafford County. Baker Hughes reports the national rig count was unchanged. The count of oil rigs was up one, while the gas rig count was down one. Texas and North Dakota were each up one rig, while Louisiana and Alaska both dropped by one.&nbsp; There were just four new permits filed last week in Kansas. All of them were in counties east of Wichita. That's 94 permits for drilling at new locations in Kansas so far this year. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports 16 newly-completed wells across Kansas last week, eight of them east of Wichita and eight in Western Kansas, including two in Ellis County. The government says U.S. crude-oil stockpiles dropped by 7.3 million barrels during the week ending February 12. The Energy Information Administration reports inventories are right at the five-year average for this time of year. EIA reports U.S. crude imports rose 41,000 barrels per day last week. We currently import an average of 5.9 million barrels per day. Over the last four weeks, imports have averaged 13% less than the same four-week period last year. U.S. crude-oil production dropped below 11 million barrels per day last week, and remains more than two million barrels per day behind year-ago totals. In a monthly report, the government predicts total shale production in the U.S. will continue to decline. Output from the seven major shale plays tracked by EIA will drop 77,000 barrels per day in March, to just over 7.5 million barrels per day. That would mark the sixth consecutive monthly decline. Shale production accounts for roughly three-fourths of U.S. crude-oil production. Regulators in North Dakota say production continues to drop in the #2 U.S. crude-producing state. The Department of Mineral Resources reported output of 1.19 million barrels per day in December, down nearly 35,000 barrels per day from the month before. Declining production in North Dakota has helped the state meet its environmental goals. In its latest report, DMR reported a 93 percent gas-capture rate. That means of all the natural gas produced at oil wells in North Dakota, only seven percent was vented or burned at the well head. During it's initial oil boom, the state's operators flared four times that amount. Last year marked the first in which the U.S. was a net petroleum exporter, exporting more petroleum than we imported on an annual basis. The U.S. Energy Information Administration says declining imports drove the shift, but now predicts we will return to net importer status for the next two years. In it's Short Term Energy Outlook, the government predicts U.S. petroleum consumption will continue to recover from the effects of the pandemic, growing by seven percent this year and another five percent next year.

COLBY — Colby native and former Mars Curiosity Rover team member Sarah Lamm will be the featured speaker for the Dr. Max Pickerill Lecture Series at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 9, in Frahm Theatre at Colby Community College.&nbsp;

She will talk about Curiosity as well as the newest rover, Perseverance.&nbsp;

Lamm was a team member on NASA's Curiosity Rover for three years and worked for the United States Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory over three summers. She was selected as a 2019 Mars Generation 24 Under 24 Leader in STEAM and Space, a group of young people from around the world who are breaking barriers in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) fields and bringing the sciences to the public through multidisciplinary interests.&nbsp;

A 2018 graduate of Kansas State University, Lamm holds bachelor's degrees in chemistry, geology, and geography. She also graduated from Colby Community College and Colby High School in 2014. Today, she is continuing her education pursuing a master's degree at Kansas State.&nbsp;

Mars exploration will be topic of March 9 lecture

Hays, Kansas –HaysMed, part of The University of Kansas Health System, has announced that the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) has honored their RN Residency Program with an Accreditation.&nbsp;

HaysMed RN Residency Program is accredited as a Practice Transition Program (PTAP) by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation in Practice Transition Programs.&nbsp;

To achieve PTAP accreditation, organizations must pass an extensive application process, including a detailed application, submission of written documentation in the form of a self-study, and a site visit, which was conducted virtually.&nbsp;

The program was also recognized by the Department of Labor (DOL) as an industry Recognized apprenticeship (IRAP).&nbsp; Industry-Recognized Apprenticeship Programs are high-quality apprenticeship programs recognized as such by a Standards Recognition Entity (SRE) pursuant to the DOL’s standards. These programs provide individuals with opportunities to obtain workplace-relevant knowledge and progressively advancing skills. IRAPs include a paid-work component and an educational component and result in an industry-recognized credential.

“Achieving both accreditation and recognition is a groundbreaking moment for our residency program,” said Shari Hertel, RN, MSN, RN Residency Program Coordinator. “The ANCC accreditation and IRAP recognition motivates us to keep improving in nursing excellence. Our program gives our graduates the confidence to enter into any clinical setting knowing they were trained with the most current, evidence-based best practices.”

The HaysMed RN Residency Program was established in 2008 and applications are accepted 2 times a year for the yearlong training.&nbsp; The program is designed to transition newly graduated nurses from the academic to the professional practice environment in a welcoming and supportive way. &nbsp; This program offers nurse residents training, competency and professional development, and support for the critical transition from graduation to clinical practice. Through supportive mentoring, coaching, and learning, RN residents develop clinical and leadership skills and are cultivated into nurse professionals who deliver high-quality patient care.&nbsp;

To date, more than 300 RNS have graduated from the RN Residency Program. &nbsp;

One of the most neglected tools for vegetable gardeners is a soil thermometer. Soil temperature is a much better measure of when to plant than air temperature or the calendar. Planting when soil is too cool can cause some seeds to rot and transplants to sit there. A number of vegetables can germinate and grow at cool temperatures. For example, peas will germinate and grow well at a soil temperature of 40 F. Though lettuce, parsnips, and spinach can sprout at a soil temperature of 35 F, they prefer at least 45 F for best germination and growth. &nbsp;Radishes also do well at a soil temperature of 45 F. &nbsp;Even if the seeds of these cool-season crops are planted below the recommended soil temperature, the seed will rarely rot. Warm-season crops such as tomatoes, sweet corn, and beans are different. &nbsp;They prefer at least 55 F for germination (or transplanting), but others such as peppers, cucumbers, melons, and sweet potatoes need it even warmer, about 60 F. &nbsp;If planted when soils are too cool, they likely will rot before germinating. Taking soil temperature accurately is a bit of a science. First, use a metal soil thermometer, which is sold in many garden, auto parts, and hardware stores. Take temperature 2.5 inches deep at about 10 to 11 a.m. Temperature variations throughout the day and night affect soil temperature, with the lowest readings after dawn and the warmest around mid-afternoon. The late-morning reading gives a good average temperature. If taking the soil temperature at this time is not practical, take a reading before you leave for work and a second when you return home and use the average. ELLSWORTH COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 3:30p.m. Monday in Ellsworth County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1996 Cadillac Seville driven by Thomas Wayne Zimmerman, 60, Hays, was westbound on Interstate 70 three miles west of 12th Road.

The car entered the median, struck the crossover, rolled into the west bound lanes of traffic and cane to a rest on its top.

EMS transported Zimmerman to Hays Medical Center. The KHP did not details on his seat belt usage.

The Ellis County Health Department on Monday reported the average number of new coronavirus cases per day in the last seven days again remained flat at six since Friday.

For only the second time since Aug. 17, the new case count between reporting days was in single digits. The department updates case numbers each Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

There were seven new cases reported since Friday. There are currently 59 active cases, including seven active hospitalizations of Ellis County residents, and 3,590 recovered cases.&nbsp;

As of Monday, there were 14 COVID-19 inpatients at HaysMed, down from 16 on Friday, with 10 of those active patients and four in the recovery phase.

The seven-day average of percent of positive tests rose from 9.9 percent on Friday to 13.2 percent on Monday.

'Pizza for HCF Twice As Nice' fundraiser this week in Stockton

The Hays USD 489 school board will consider launching a phone survey at its next board meeting.

The survey services are being offered by DLR, the school district's architect on its last bond issue.

The perception survey would connect with 300 stakeholders in the community. It is designed to give the board and administration feedback&nbsp;on the pulse of stakeholders,&nbsp;in regards to how they feel the district is&nbsp;doing&nbsp;in&nbsp;several areas of district operations, according to the board's packet.

The district will also discuss a lease purchase agreement for the Roosevelt HVAC project. <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/5dbad729-1b82-4c14-a6f2-f211c207d25a">The board approved the project at its Feb. 8 meeting.</a> Work is set to begin in March.

The total cost of the project with debt service will be $2.4 million, which will be paid over 10 years at $240,000 per year.

The board will hear a presentation from Silas Hibbs, HHS soccer coach, on a proposed donation of installation of two new soccer fields with irrigation directly east of the current HHS soccer field.

The new field would be used for practice and keeping the game field from overuse during the season. In addition, there will also be a donation of pine trees and soccer backstops for current game field.

In other business, the district will consider the 2021-22 school calendar, and two-year administrator and district administrator contracts.
