The Hays USD 489 school board voted Monday night to take applications for a board vacancy.
Nuchelle Chance resigned her seat because she moved out of the district.
Chance's term was set to expire in January. The November election will determine who takes the seat.
Unless the person who is appointed is someone who is running for school board and is also elected to the board, the person who is appointed would only serve until the newly elected board members take their seats in January.
Board member Lori Hertel made a motion to leave the seat vacant until the newly elected board members take their seats in January. Her motion died for lack of a second.
The school district will publish a notice of the vacancy in the local newspaper. Fifteen days after publication, the board can appoint someone to the vacancy.
