One of the happiest days of Teresa Schrant's teaching career was the beginning of the spring semester when she was allowed to return to school.

Schrant, a fourth-grade teacher at Holy Family Elementary School, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma cancer in 2019. She spent a month in Kansas City, where she underwent a stem cell transplant. When she returned home in mid-2020, she was quarantined in her house for months, only allowed to walk up and down her block as long as she didn't stop to talk to anyone.

Schrant was not allowed back into her classroom for the entire year of 2020.

"I was so ready to come back," she said. "It was so hard to stay back in the spring after Christmas [2019] because I felt good."

She said she missed teaching so much. She snuck up to the school a few times and greeted the kids from a distance.

"I'm not done teaching yet," she said. "I love what I'm doing."

Although Schrant's cancer is in remission, her mother was placed on Hospice shortly before the end of the school year as a result of a long-term illness. She said her faith and the support of her school and faith communities meant so much to her in her time of struggle.&nbsp;

"I have people who can support me through their prayers and their faith," she said. "I can support other people through my prayers and my faith. We have to help lift each other up."

Schrant continued to teach religion classes via Zoom, even though she was quarantined in her home. She said she could only know her students through their masks and a screen, which was very hard.

"I think teaching here has helped me to grow in my faith," she said of Holy Family. "For that reason, hopefully, I can help the kids grow in their faith because they come seeking to find their faith in the world. We have a hard world to fit in."

"It is really important for me to teach them they will always have their faith that they can rely on if nothing else is there."

Schrant has spent her entire 40-year career with Hays Catholic schools. She started teaching at the former St. Joseph School and eventually moved to Holy Family.

Schrant regularly has in her class what she calls "grand students," children of her former students.

The mother of one of those students nominated her for the Hays Post Teacher of the Month.

"I had Mrs. Schrant when I was in the second grade, and still to this day, she is very special to me," said Ann Gottschalk, parent. "Justin is my last child at Holy Family, and for Justin to have Mrs. Schrant for his fourth-grade teacher, it made the year even more special. 

"Mrs. Schrant is one in a million. We are very lucky to have Mrs. Schrant at Holy Family. [She] is one of the best teachers around. She loves the kids and the kids love her. She treats each kid with so much love."

Schrant said her greatest challenge is to motivate kids who don't like school or who feel friendless to want to be at school every morning.

When the principal announces the students aren't going to have school, she teases her students, "You better cry. No cheering. You have to be sad that you're not going to be here tomorrow."

"Every year, I think this is the best year I've ever had," she said. "I can only think of two years out of the 40 that I thought, 'I don't think I can do this anymore.'"

The best advice she said has been given was from a principal who was nun. She told her never to quit teaching after a hard year, because you will always have that bad taste in your mouth.

"I have been lucky that I have had good year, after good year, after good year, and I'm still here," she said.

Schrant, 62, said she wants to keep teaching as long as she can continue to be effective with her students. She has no plans to retire any time soon.

She will spend her summer compiling some of the 500 pictures she has taken during the school year in a yearbook for just the students in her class, a project she has undertaken every year since 2006.

Schrant is already looking forward to the first day of school in the fall, which is her favorite day of the school year.

"I love the first day of school," she said. "[It's] new kids, new class, new opportunities, new starts, new beginnings," she said.

Teacher of the Month: Faith leads teacher through cancer, quarantine

Keeping
healthy is as vital as ever, and one of Hays' newest businesses, Exhale
Bodywork and Massage,&nbsp;2015 Vine St., hopes to help area residents feel their best by offering
massage with a holistic message.

Born
and raised, Hays resident Stephanie Calvery, owner,&nbsp;opened her shop in December, offering a myriad of
services that can help patients feel better without the need for pharmaceutical
intervention through massage and other alternative therapies.

"I
think more people are leaning toward wholistic care now, but I would like to
see a lot more of that happen, just because that is not always the answer, it's
not always the fix-all for everyone," Calvery said. "People that can
do more things naturally and not have the side effects of a pharmaceutical
regimen, they tend to feel better."

She
points to the ongoing opioid crisis as a prime example of how holistic medicine
can be a better option for pain management than pharmaceuticals.

"There
have been articles published about massage therapy and helping to fight the
opioid crisis because you don't need that numbing effect," Calvery said.
"What you need is to find what is causing the problem, get to the root of
it, and not put a Band-Aid on it.

"At
the same time, there have been some great studies done on therapy and
hypertension. It helps to lower the blood pressure; it helps with your vascular
system to open up more and not have the arteriosclerosis."

With
her services, Calvery hopes more people in the area can explore the benefits of
her services and natural wellness options in general.

"There
are just a lot of great benefits that our community is not fully tapped
into," she said. "And I would love to see our community finding these
answers that they would otherwise look to in a (prescription medicine) bottle."

At Exhale, Calvery said she sees a full range of clients
from ages 5 to 105 looking for various services, but pain relief is her most
common request.

"They want to be out
of pain," Calvery said.

And
now that many are venturing back to the gym as pandemic concerns lessen, pain
management is an essential addition to workouts.

"Starting
back at the gym, they are going to have what we refer to as DOMS, delayed onset
muscle soreness," Calvery said. "So, the day after or two days after
you do a hard leg day and you can't sit down, I'll have people come in, and we
will work to loosen those muscles and legs, or they will sit in the sauna and
just allow that heat to penetrate and loosen those muscles. So, getting back
and getting more active, you are going to be more sore, so my job is to help
relieve some of that pain."

While
the location is new, Calvery has spent the last few years training and working
locally and is a familiar face in Hays.&nbsp;

She
has worked as a massage therapist since 2017, working at a variety of
locations, including the Hays Med Center for Health Improvement.

But after years of work in
the field, Calvery decided it was time to expand at the end of last year.

"I
just decided it was time to grow," she said. "When you have your own
place, you're not constrained by someone else's ideals. So, I can take what I
want to grow this into and go on that path instead of what somebody else is
wanting."

In
2018 she completed a program at Fort Hays State University and studied&nbsp;Kinesio&nbsp;Taping,
Tai Yoga massage and Barefoot massage.

The
barefoot massage, she said, is the deepest deep tissue massage available, but
since the pressure is broad, it is without the sharpness of an elbow or thumb
used in other deep tissue massage styles.

She
also utilizes a wide arrange of tools like&nbsp;Gua sha&nbsp;stone scraping,
cupping and hot stones.

"All
of my sessions are customized to what the client needs," Calvery said.

Along
with the traditional cupping practice, she offers sinus cupping, which moves
lymphatic fluids out of the sinus cavity, creating relief for those suffering
from allergies.

"I've
had a lot of clients try that and they will leave here completely open and
draining," she said.&nbsp;

But
even with a variety of services, Calvery said relieving low back and shoulder
pain is her most frequent customer request.

"With
people sitting more at desks and they are kind of hunched over, that
contributes to the shoulder pain and also the low back pain," she
said.

Inside
Exhale, Calvery also promotes the use of her state-of-the-art sauna, which can
provide numerous health benefits.

"The
sauna has different settings on it," she said. "A lot of people are
coming in right now to use the weight-loss setting."

Calvery
also said it has been popular for pre-massage use.

In
the location she has some retail items available, including the essential oils
she uses on clients during sessions.

"One
is called raindrop therapy," she said. "That's a 45-minute session
that is basically just the use of 10 essential oils with light muscle work that
helps to relieve pain on the nervous system level."

Overall, has been pleased
with the overall positive response since the December opening.

"I
have been very blessed with new clients and old clients finding me again,"
she said. "It's just been really great."

New Hays business offering holistic pain relief

During the May meeting of the Daughters of Isabella Circle #254, Ms. Beatina "Tina" Nowak was chosen as the 2021 Daughter of the Year.&nbsp; Tina will be honored at the June 8 Mother/Daughter/Honor Activity and meeting. Nowak has been an active member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish for many years.&nbsp; Her involvement includes helping to clean the church, assist with coffee and donuts after mass, helping with funeral dinners, and currently is a Eucharistic Minister. As a member of Circle #254 of the Daughters of Isabella for the past 34 years, she has served as Banner Bearer, served on various committees, serves as honorary pall bearer at funerals of deceased members, and participates in the rosaries at the mortuaries. Tina volunteers at the ARC, attends bible studies, and is a Senior Companion.&nbsp; A few of the things Nowak enjoys doing in her spare time is going to volleyball, football, basketball, soccer, baseball, and fast pitch activities that her grandchildren are involved with, as well as other school activities.&nbsp; She belongs to a card club and participates in adoration in the chapel two times per week. Nowak was married to Ted Nowak until he passed away after 40 years of marriage.&nbsp; They have three children — Kristi, John and Lisa. They had seven grandchildren, two of these grandchildren passed away shortly after birth. During the Mother/Daughter/Honors Activity on June 8, in addition to honoring Nowak, the club will be honoring six 25-year members, and two 50-year members.&nbsp; These members will be awarded pins showing their years of membership.&nbsp; The 25-year members to be honored are: Janice Arnold, Mildred Klaus, Ruth Lang, Jean Rozell, DeAnn Schmidt and Patricia Wolf.&nbsp; The 50-year members to be honored are:&nbsp; Dianna Leiker and Mary Staab.

2021 Daughter of the Year named by Hays organization

LANE COUNTY —A Kansas man died in an accident just after 9:30p.m. Monday in Lane County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Nissan Rogue driven by Clarence E. Young, 81, Lakin, was westbound on Kansas 96 at eleven miles east of Kansas 23

The SUV left the roadway to the north, struck an embankment to a field access road, went airborne, rolled and came to rest on its passenger side.

&nbsp;Young was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported Price and Sons Funeral Home. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

The Kearny County sheriff's office had issued a Silver Alert for Young earlier in the day.

81-year-old Kan. man dies after violent SUV crash

The city of Larned is hoping generous supporters will help it bring back a beloved tradition that has brought joy to many residents over the years.

The City of Larned's water tower holds a special place in the hearts of its residents for its brilliant light display during the Christmas season. City officials recently launched a capital campaign on GoFundMe to aid in the restoration of this beloved tradition and raise enough to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/City-of-Larned-139334013384544/photos/pcb.788942248423714/788935435091062/" target="_blank">restore the lighting display and complete a full LED upgrade</a>.

"Many had the pleasure of growing up with this Larned tradition and we hope to give that same opportunity to current and future generations," a news release said.

Cloud County Community College offers a wide variety of courses leading toward completion of transfer and career degrees in four areas: Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of Applied Science and Associate of General Studies.

TOPEKA –&nbsp; A fifth-grade student from Dodge City has won the 2021 National Missing Children’s Day poster contest, Attorney General Derek Schmidt and KBI Director Kirk Thompson announced.

Heidy Perez Veleta, a student at Sunnyside Elementary in Dodge City, was chosen the national winner by the U.S. Department of Justice. She was previously announced as the Kansas state winner, which qualified her for the national competition. Her entry was among 800 this year from 27 states.

 The annual poster contest is held in recognition of National Missing Children’s Day observed annually on May 25 since it was first designated by President Ronald Reagan.

Students all across the country enter artwork representing the theme, “Bringing Our Missing Children Home.” The poster contest provides an opportunity for schools, law enforcement and child advocates to discuss the issue of missing and/or exploited children with youth, parents and guardians and to promote child safety. It also brings attention to the united goal of bringing missing children home safely.

“Communication is key to ensuring our children have the tools they need to stay safe,” Schmidt said. “It’s important for parents to put a safety plan in place and regularly take time to review it with your kids. National Missing Children’s Day is a good reminder to have those important conversations, and I encourage all Kansans to do so.”

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) maintains a list of children missing from Kansas. That database can be accessed at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.missingkids.org/" target="_blank">www.missingkids.org</a>.&nbsp;

Anyone with information about the whereabouts of any of these missing persons should contact a law enforcement agency or call 1-800-KS-CRIME. Information about missing children also can be reported to NCMEC at 1 (800) THE-LOST (800-843-5678). The NCMEC list currently includes the names, photographs and other information about the 76 children missing from Kansas. 

Schmidt represents the National Association of Attorneys General as a member of NCMEC’s Law Enforcement Advisory Council.

Schmidt also reminded parents of the importance of keeping identifying information on children up-to-date in the event a child does become missing. Having an identity kit with the child’s fingerprints, height, weight, and a current photo can make it easier to quickly locate a missing child.

Western Kan. student wins National Missing Children’s Day Poster Contest

LEAVENWORTH - The University of Saint Mary celebrated the close of another academic year and the passing of a major milestone in the lives of the class of 2021 at USM's Commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 15, in McGilley Field House on USM's main Leavenworth campus, 4100 South 4th Street.

The 2021 Commencement events honored the university's 251 graduates—a group composed of 153 undergraduate degree recipients, 56 master's degree recipients, and 42 doctoral degree recipients, including an Osborne native. This year's graduates hail from coast to coast and from international destinations.

The morning ceremony honored graduates from USM's Division of Health Sciences, Division of Nursing, and the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The afternoon ceremony honored graduates from the Division of Business and Information Technologies, the Division of Liberal Arts and Humanities, and the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

The ceremonies were also livestreamed on USM's YouTube channel.

The ceremonies featured performances by the USM Brass Quintet and the Saint Mary Concert Chorale. Reflections were provided by student speakers Logan Swank, a biology and chemistry major from Puyallup, Wash.; Elijah Creighton-Rhea, an English major of Victorville, Calif.; Victoria Bogner of Kansas City, Kan., who earned a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree; and Michael McGuire of Atchison, Kan., who earned a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology.

The members of the Saint Mary graduating class of 2021 arrived at USM from a wide variety of backgrounds and are bound for an equally impressive range of bright futures. In reaching their God-given potential, USM's graduates have overcome obstacles of all kinds.

Graduates included Caitlyn Miller, Osborne, who earned a doctorate of physical therapy.

Lennington had tried her luck on the new Sweet Escape tickets before,

for a Ford Escape if you entered those tickets, so I thought I’d buy a 
few more that night,” the winner said. “It was the last of four Sweet

The local cosmetologist immediately told her three children and 
friends, who are all happy and excited about her luck. The win didn’t

🎙Post Podcast: Diverse factors impacting area unemployment

<a href="https://help4abuse.org/">Options Domestic and Sexual Violence Services</a>&nbsp;had a survivor garden ceremony Tuesday afternoon next to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays.&nbsp;

Survivors, as well as members of law enforcement and members of the community, were asked to write encouraging comments or prayers on the back of cards that depicted irises on the front. Those cards were placed as if in a garden in an empty lot in Hays Tuesday.

"I want to thank our entire community for their tremendous support to help our garden grow and to plant the seeds of hope and inspiration for those who are still suffering in silence," Jennifer Hecker, Options executive director, said Tuesday.

"I want to thank all of our brothers and sisters in blue who have come out to also show their support and work with us to keep survivors safe and to hold offenders accountable," she said. "Without them, we will not make progress."

Hecker said the last year has been difficult. Options has seen more frequent reports of violence and more severe reports of violence.&nbsp;During some of the worst months of the pandemic, Options saw a spike in calls.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/b7ad829c-cf17-42b2-8dae-00b3a1c1b429">Between late March and Aug. 26, Options recorded a 42-percent increase in calls to its hotline. The hotline received 492 calls from late March to August compared to 488 calls for all of 2019.</a>

"Now more than ever, survivors need hope," Hecker said. "They need hope because that is the very first step in healing."

Hecker quoted Judith Rich saying, "Hope is a match in a dark tunnel,&nbsp; a moment of light, just enough light to light the path ahead and ultimately bring you to the way out."

Isaac Guilbert, Options staff member, read the poem "Lilies of the Valley" by Jane Merchant.

"What comes to mind when I think of lilies are women who have thrived by overcoming adversity," he said. "I think of flower petals absorbing the sun, blossoming in the valleys of rolling Kansas hills. It takes bravery to survive and thrive in nature."&nbsp;

Those cards were placed as if in a garden in an empty lot in Hays Tuesday."I want to thank our entire community for their tremendous support to help our garden grow and to plant the seeds of hope and inspiration for those who are still suffering in silence," Jennifer Hecker, Options executive director, said Tuesday."I want to thank all of our brothers and sisters in blue who have come out to also show their support and work with us to keep survivors safe and to hold offenders accountable," she said. "Without them, we will not make progress."<figure>

Options has seen more frequent reports of violence and more severe reports of violence.&nbsp;During some of the worst months of the pandemic, Options saw a spike in calls.<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/b7ad829c-cf17-42b2-8dae-00b3a1c1b429">Between late March and Aug. 26, Options recorded a 42-percent increase in calls to its hotline. The hotline received 492 calls from late March to August compared to 488 calls for all of 2019.</a>"Now more than ever, survivors need hope," Hecker said. Options honors violence survivors with garden, messages

“My Republican colleagues will not talk about Medicaid expansion. They just won’t. I don’t understand it.”

So said first-term Representative Christina Haswood this past week during a discussion of the 2021 legislative session, responding to a question about what had surprised her at the Capitol.

As a student of legislatures, I find this disheartening and a bit surprising.&nbsp; After all, talking is what lawmakers do, much of the time. Moreover, on a major issue like this, one expects spirited debate and engagement.&nbsp; We have had it in the past, but no more. As Representative Haswood reports, there is an almost total unwillingness to even mention the issue.

So, why this reluctance to engage, especially on an issue of immense fiscal and health importance to Kansans?&nbsp; My hunch is that GOP lawmakers have no serious policy response because they have no policy, just a reflexive “no” to expansion, especially when backed by a Democratic governor.

This is truly incredible in that by expanding Medicaid Kansas would:

(1)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;have brought $4 billion to 5 billion into state coffers over the past decade;

(2)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;provide for a 90 percent federal-fund contribution of state costs, with total reimbursement over the next two years;

(3)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;provide 130,000 – 150,000 Kansans with basic medical coverage;

(4)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;increase revenues at all Kansas hospitals and especially help those in rural areas, which are mostly represented by Republican legislators;

(5)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;allow Kansas to recapture hundreds of millions of dollars in federal tax dollars that currently subsidize health care in the 36 states that have implemented expansion. At present, Kansas gets nothing in return for the Medicaid tax dollars we send to Washington and are in turn distributed to those 36 states, including California and New York.

(6)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;reflect the overwhelming preferences of Kansans, with 70 percent of a residents and more than 60 percent of Republicans supporting expansion.

Although this seems like a familiar issue, take a few seconds to re-read these bullet points. Kansas could gain billions of dollars, provide coverage to many Kansans who lack it, help rural hospitals, and stop the outflow of our federal tax dollars while receiving nothing in return.

What, I would ask, is the downside?&nbsp; Honestly, the unwavering resistance is baffling, from almost any perspective.&nbsp; In the end, as with their desire to kill the Affordable Care Act, Republicans have no health policy, just knee-jerk opposition to Democratic proposals, either state or federal.&nbsp;

To be sure, the Legislature did pass a bill that allows insurance companies to sell shoddy, low coverage plans that provide the illusion, not the reality, of coverage. Governor Kelly properly vetoed that bill.&nbsp; That’s not health care, that’s a charade.

If Republicans had actual, substantive objections to expansion, their lawmakers could talk about these in concrete terms, beyond their ultimate, petty fear that in the future the state might actually have to pay a little to get a lot.

So mum’s the word, as Republican lawmakers talk about trans women playing sports, restrictions on voting, and revoking mask mandates, all the while ignoring the fiscal and health implications of their actions and bypassing the preferences of the very voters they claim to represent.

Registration deadline approaching for the Ellis City-Wide Garage Sales

YODER — Twenty-three new law enforcement officers graduated from the&nbsp;<a href="https://kletc.org/" target="_blank">Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center</a>&nbsp;(KLETC) on May 21 at a ceremony held in KLETC’s Integrity Auditorium.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Nicholas Delaney, a deputy at the Pawnee County Sheriff’s Office, was the class president for the 278th Basic Training Class. The speaker for the ceremony was chief of police for the Pratt Police Department, Nathan Humble. James Buettgenbach, KLETC senior instructor of police, was the class coordinator for the 278th Basic Training Class.&nbsp;

Deputy Jacoby Williams of the Saline County Sheriff’s Office was recognized during the ceremony for his firearms proficiency as the class’ “Top Shot.” Deputy Jimmy Golden of the Gray County Sheriff’s Office and Deputy Daniel Everhart of the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office walked, ran or biked more than 200 miles during their time at KLETC and exceeded the other physical requirements of the 200 Mile Club, including push-ups, sit-ups and a timed run.&nbsp;

Graduates receive certificates of course completion from KLETC and Kansas law enforcement certification from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, the state’s law enforcement licensing authority. The training course fulfills the state requirement for law enforcement training. Classroom lectures and hands-on applications help train officers to solve the increasingly complex problems they face in the line of duty.&nbsp;

Established by the Kansas Legislature in 1968, KLETC trains the majority of municipal, county and state law enforcement officers in Kansas and oversees the training of the remaining officers at seven authorized and certified academy programs operated by local law enforcement agencies and the Kansas Highway Patrol.&nbsp;

About 300 officers enroll annually in KLETC 14-week basic training programs. KLETC offers continuing education and specialized training to over 10,000 Kansas officers each year. KLETC is located one mile west and one mile south of Yoder, near Hutchinson, and is a division of University of Kansas Lifelong &amp; Professional Education.&nbsp;

The graduates, who began their training in January 2021, represented 17 municipal, county, and state law enforcement agencies from across Kansas.
