Hays restaurant the choice for 'most charming' in Kansas

An Ellis County couple is seeking to create a camping and ag tourism destination north of Hays.

Chad and Cynthia Tuttle own C2T Ranch, which is 14 miles north of Hays at 1202 Saline River Road.

The couple opened five camp sites to the public last summer, booking through the Hipcamp app.

"We stayed extremely busy all summer, all the way through September and October," Chad Tuttle said. "We were amazed, but we did it at exactly the right time.&nbsp;

"COVID made everyone change how they were traveling. If you still wanted to get across the country, a lot of people wanted to camp. They didn't want to stay in hotel rooms. They didn't want to fly, so camping went up 300 percent last year."

Hundreds of people visited the ranch last season. The ranch was voted the No. 1 campsite in Kansas on Hipcamp last year, and the No. 2 RV campsite in the country.

"People were just amazed at the scenery. Everybody told us we should do it in a bigger way, so that is why we decided to go ahead and expand it this year," he said.

The effort was so successful, the couple has made a request for a conditional-use permit to expand the ranch's facilities. The project is set to go before the Ellis Joint Planning and Zoning Commission on April 28.

The ranch consists of 2,000&nbsp;contiguous acres and more than four miles of the Saline River. The land had been used for grazing and hay.

The middle of the ranch is bordered by 150-foot limestone cliffs.

The campground will consist of up to 36 campsites along the loop of the river. Each campsite will have river access and will be accessible by vehicles and RV’s. The couple is planning 12 primitive campsites, 12 RV sites with 50 amp power and water, six yurt sites, and six full-service RV sites with power, water and septic hookups.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The couple is also planning an outdoor event venue. Periodic flooding along the river will prevent the developers from building a permanent structure, but the couple plans to build a large deck that can be used to mount a 40-by-80-foot tent.

This can be used for outdoor events or weddings, Tuttle said. Capacity would be up to 300 people.&nbsp;

The Tuttles described the campgrounds as secluded. The campsites are in the middle of the ranch, and the nearest neighbor is more than a mile away.

The ranch already has access to electricity and well water. The last four and half miles from the highway to the ranch is unpaved.

The couple plans to offer “baskets” to campers that include ranch-raised hamburgers or brats and homemade roasted potatoes, ready to be cooked over their campfires. 

They will also offer river floats, ranch tours and guided historical hikes.  The ranch has more than 9 miles of marked trails for people to enjoy in the canyons and an extensive set of rock corrals and buildings dating back to at least 1885 to explore.&nbsp;

Future plans include a pumpkin patch and haunted trails along the river, along with other fall activities. The Tuttles also included a possible bed and breakfast in the conditional-use permit request, seeing that as a natural growth of the hospitality side of the ranch.&nbsp;

The plan will be done in several stages. Initial projects will be restroom facilities, the event venue, and clearing and cleaning for primitive sites.

Tuttle said he hopes to have the first phase of the project done this summer with campsites open by Memorial Day and a grand opening by July 4.

"It is more fun to share a beautiful place like this than to keep it to your self is what we discovered," Tuttle said.

C2T Ranch north of Hays seeks to expand campsites, add event venue

Tarasa Miller woke in tears from a nightmare.&nbsp;

She had been dreaming about her father's beloved classic Chevy truck —the one she sat in the back of during family cruise sessions. The truck she and her dad went to get ice cream in when she was a little girl.&nbsp;

"I was crying in my dream, and I woke up, and I was still crying. It was a feeling that I needed to go look for it. I needed to know how the story ended. How was it doing?" Tarasa said.

Tarasa, who lives in Hoisington, called her husband in tears. He tried to calm her down, saying, "You've got to find this truck, babe."

Tarasa's father died two years ago. The father and daughter had been estranged for more than 25 years.

Tarasa, 40, said she felt as if her dad was reaching out for her, and she needed to see that truck one more time to gain closure, find some peace.

But where to even begin looking for the truck?

The last person Tarasa knew owned the truck was her father's friend Doug Carver of Liebenthal, who is also now deceased. She heard Doug's brother, Pat Carver, might have the truck, but that had been years ago.

The truck had always been in the back of her mind — amongst the happy memories of her dad. 

Her dad put an old school bus bench seat in the bed of the truck, where she would ride.

"I remember our dad driving us around, cruising around when that truck was old and green and beat up," she said. "My parents wold go get us ice cream cones, and we would ride around town to the zoo and all of that with us in the back of the truck."

As a adult, when she visited Liebenthal, she would drive around, hoping to catch a glimpse of her father's old truck in whatever condition it might be.

After her nightmare, Tarasa put up a desperate plea on Facebook in an attempt to locate her father's former truck.&nbsp;

Within a couple hours, she began receiving responses. The truck was not in a heap as she had feared in her dream. The truck was owned by Pat Carver, Doug's older brother, who had just moved back to Liebenthal from Hays two weeks earlier.

A friend of the Carvers' sent Tarasa a photo taken in 2011 of Pat's son, Austin, standing by the truck with his prom date.

"I instantly started crying," she said of when she saw the photo. "I knew this was the truck. ... I felt as if it was a message from my dad that he's OK, and he still loves me — that all is good between the two of us.

"My heart needed to know the rest of the story of this truck. It was a general unease in my life not knowing if this truck is OK. Where's it at? Does someone love this truck as much as I do?"

Tarasa said she was put in touch with the Carver family, who not only helped her fill in some of the holes in the truck's history, but also allowed her to see her father's truck again.

Pat Carver and his family also have a deep sentimental attachment to the 1950 Chevy. Doug Carver passed away suddenly not long after he received the truck from Jim Pfeifer, Tarasa's dad.

Pat said he and his brother were close. Doug and Pat were two siblings of six with Pat and Doug falling in the middle of the pack, and Doug being younger than Pat.

Pat said he and Doug looked alike, and people often confused the two. Doug was always into mischief.

"They seen my brother, and they thought it was me," Pat said, "so I would get accused of everything. He would never tell anyone anything different."

Doug said his whole family is close and losing his brother was tough.

Pat said Doug used the Chevy as a work truck for pulling limestone slabs that he used in carving, but Pat promised Doug before he died he would restore the 1950 Chevy. When Pat inherited the truck, he did just that.

The truck came from the factory painted green,and it had a gold interior when Jim Pfeifer owned it. When Pat inherited the truck, it was painted blue, so Pat went with blue paint when Greg Schaffer with Greg's Alignment restored the truck.

Pat had a new 350 engine installed in the truck, as well as a new transmission and rear end. The wooden planks in the bed were restored. The gold interior with bucket seats that Tarasa remembered was replaced with a bench seat with grey and blue upholstery.&nbsp;

As a tribute to his brother, Pat had "In Memory of Doug" pin striped on the engine firewall.&nbsp;The tag is custom — 4UDoug.

The truck has been used in many parades over the years and featured in car shows. Pat takes it out for weekend cruises and, at times, he drove it to Liebenthal to work at his beef jerky plant.

On March 13, on a cold dreary day, Tarasa and Pat met in Liebenthal and Tarasa was reunited with her father's truck.

"I thought I would be pretty emotional when I saw the truck," she said. "I thought I was going to break down like a cry baby and just lose myself, but I didn't. I was so excited"

The truck was no longer the broken-down green monster she remembered from her childhood, but she said she was so pleased to see the truck restored to its original glory.

"Although it was emotional to me, it was closure for me for some of the bad feelings and hurt me and my father had," she said. "It made me feel better. It brought peace, and it brought some closure to losing my dad."

Pat said he was pleased to be able to share the truck and his memories of his brother with Tarasa.

Pat said he hopes the truck will stay in his family for years to come. Although he is enjoying the truck in his retirement, he plans to deed the Chevy to his son, Austin.

Tarasa said the Carvers have been very gracious in letting her connect with the truck again. She said the truck is right where it should be, because Austin also has fond memories of growing up with the truck.

"It is cool that two kids, in two different generations grew up with this truck," she said. ...

"I have had many people through all of this say, 'Buy it back. See what it would cost to buy it back.' I said, 'No way!' It's not even a thought in my mind. I have the memories with that truck, and Austin has his memories he has with that truck. You can't put a price tag on a memory."

Tarasa said finding the truck was "a miracle only heaven could pull off

"It has brought a lot of closure between me and my dad, and it's brought me new friendships with the Carver family."

Two families bond over memories of 1950 Chevy truck

On Wednesdays at Wilson Elementary School, students don't dread being called to the office.

They know they may be a part of WOW Wednesdays, a positive office referral program at the school.

WOW stands for Way of the Warrior, a reference to the Wilson mascot. The students learn the Way of the Warrior is to be kind, in control respectful and responsible.

The students are recommended for a positive calls home by their teachers, and on Wednesdays lucky students' names are pulled out of a fish bowl.

The principal makes positive calls home, and the students get to take home T-shirts donated by Fort Hays State University.

Janelle&nbsp;VanKooten's son, Paxon, was part of the WOW Wednesday program last year when he was a fifth grader at Wilson.&nbsp;

"It is always a little unnerving to get a phone call from the principal if you are not sure why they are calling," Janelle said.&nbsp;

"I think it is a great opportunity to open up the conversation with your kids and talk about positive things that happen during their day at school when you wouldn't otherwise know some of those things that happen," she said.

Paxon's mother said Paxon didn't say much about his call to the office, but Janelle said his smile said it all.&nbsp;

"Anytime a kid can be recognized for positive behavior, it benefits the kid recognized and the other students seeing you can be recognized for positive behavior..." Janelle said.

The WOW Wednesday, combined with multiple other strategies, have helped Wilson to dramatically reduce the number of disciplinary office referrals.

In 2018-19, Wilson had 265 disciplinary office referrals. In 2019-20, up to the COVID shutdown, the school had 88 disciplinary office referrals — a 66-percent reduction. To date this school year, the school has had only 50 disciplinary office referrals, which is an additional 34-percent reduction.

"That is the direct result of a whole lot of hard work on our teachers' part and a willingness to build relationships with students and preserve relationships with students," Principal Anita Scheve recently told the USD 489 school board. "[We want] to help them figure out what is going on and make it better and to treat behavior as something we can teach just like academics."

Positivity and social and emotional growth is not just a focus of WOW Wednesdays. It has been a core focus of the school. The school, as do all the schools in the district use the CHAMPS model, which seeks to create clear behavior expectations.

The school has tried to incorporate trauma-informed practices for the students. Scheve said this has included a Mindful Monday, which helps students learn to positively deal with stress.

Scheve said she thought the school is reaping the benefits of social/emotional practices that were implemented several years ago.

The school now has students who have been exposed to positive behavior reinforcement and trauma-informed practices their entire elementary school experience, she said.

The students learn the Way of the Warrior is to be kind, in control respectful and responsible.The students are recommended for a positive calls home by their teachers, and on Wednesdays lucky students' names are pulled out of a fish bowl.The principal makes positive calls home, and the students get to take home T-shirts donated by Fort Hays State University.Janelle&nbsp;VanKooten's son, Paxon, was part of the WOW Wednesday program last year when he was a fifth grader at Wilson.&nbsp;"It is always a little unnerving to get a phone call from the principal if you are not sure why they are calling," Janelle said.&nbsp;"I think it is a great opportunity to open up the conversation with your kids and talk about positive things that happen during their day at school when you wouldn't otherwise know some of those things that happen," she said.Paxon's mother said Paxon didn't say much about his call to the office, but Janelle said his smile said it all.&nbsp;"You could tell he was proud," she said."Anytime a kid can be recognized for positive behavior, it benefits the kid recognized and the other students seeing you can be recognized for positive behavior..." Wilson Elementary sees dramatic drop in discipline referrals

NORTON — Norton County Community Foundation awarded&nbsp;$2,500 to Norton County nonprofit organizations and charitable projects in the March grant cycle. These funds were part of the Dane G. Hansen Community Grant Fund, which offers financial support to qualifying and deserving projects and programs in Northwest Kansas.&nbsp;Grant funds supported the following project:

Norton was one of six communities selected to host this traveling Smithsonian exhibit, which is designed to spark fresh thinking and new conversations about the future and sustainability of Kansas communities. The exhibit will run for six weeks from May 1st&nbsp;– June 12th. The Norton County Arts Council (NCAC) has been planning and organizing programming for the exhibit along with a complimentary local exhibit, which will run during the same timeframe.&nbsp;

“The Crossroads exhibit will create space for our community to explore and exercise telling our history while planning for our future,” said Caryl Hale with NCAC. “Our hope is that this will help foster our community’s sense of shared identity and cultivate new ideas on how to adapt to the changes in the economy that no doubt have a large effect on our small community.”

The grants funds will help with the coordination and presentation of this exhibit and future events. “We’re so excited that Norton was selected to host the Crossroads exhibit,” said Tara Vance,&nbsp;NCCF Executive Director. “The grant committee was eager to award this request and help support the Arts Council in bringing cultural events to Norton County.”

Norton Co. foundation announces March grant cycle recipients

Troy L. Waymaster, R-Bunker Hill, is the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kslegislature.org/li_2020/s/pdf/district_maps/district_map_h_109.pdf">109th Kansas House District</a>&nbsp;state representative and chairman of the Appropriations Committee.&nbsp;

The 109th District includes&nbsp;Osborne, Russell, and Smith counties, and portions of Barton, Jewell, Lincoln and Rush counties.&nbsp;

WAYMASTER: From the Dome to Home, March 19

Fort Hays State University’s Leslie Paige has won the Presidential Award from the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) for the fourth time.

Paige, director of the Office of Scholarships and Sponsored Projects at FHSU, was honored at last month’s NASP annual convention for her exceptional service in the field of school psychology. The immediate past president of the professional organization, Paige has been an active member since 1979. She also won Presidential Awards in 2001, 2007, and 2017.

This year’s convention was held online, and more than 9,000 were able to participate – the most ever in the 52-year history of the organization.

It’s a common practice for the reigning president to honor several members with the presidential award for their work during the previous year.&nbsp; While Paige’s year as president ended in June 2020, she has been busy with responsibilities as the immediate past president.&nbsp;

“The first half of my year as president was very typical,” she said, “and the second half was like building a plane while we were flying it, with the online pivot because of the pandemic.”

Paige was surprised and honored when the president of NASP contacted her before the official announcement during the convention and told her about her award.

NASP represents more than 25,000 school psychologists, graduate students, and related professionals throughout the United States and 25 other countries. It is the world’s largest organization of school psychologists and works to advance effective practices to improve students’ learning, behavior, and mental health.

Paige said one of the most rewarding aspects of her time as president was how everyone pulled together during the pandemic.

“In a crisis, we can’t be expected to do work as usual. We have to be able to provide support for people,” she said. “For years, a lot of graduate educator faculty and school psychology programs believed you can’t teach psychology online. I have always thought, ‘Yes you can.’ This spring, in an incredibly short amount of time, we were able to continue our advocacy work through webinars. It was the worst of times and the best of times.”

Paige has held other leadership positions on the NASP board of directors, including treasurer and secretary. She has chaired and co-chaired numerous committees, including awards, leadership development, ethics, professional development, and publications. She has also been a member of the PREPaRE School Crisis Prevention and Intervention Training Curriculum workgroup and the Strategic Planning committees.

During Paige’s year serving as president, the NASP launched several initiatives in the areas of social justice, equity, and diversity.

During her final few months as immediate past president, Paige will help complete ongoing initiatives. Beginning with the organization’s new year in June, Paige will begin serving as chair of NASP’s Professional Growth Committee. She will also help plan the 2022 convention.

FHSU’s Paige honored by National Association of School Psychologists

COLBY — Colby Community College will host a groundbreaking ceremony at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 31, to celebrate the beginning of construction on the Colby Tennis Center. The public event is at the site of the old tennis courts northeast of the Cultural Arts Center.

The 21,328 square-foot building features two full-size collegiate tennis courts, two full-size pickleball courts, and a walking area.&nbsp;<a>It will</a>&nbsp;be open 24 hours a day and accessible to the community.

College President Dr. Seth Carter believes the building aligns with the mission of CCC.

"This facility will benefit northwest Kansas and the surrounding communities for decades to come," he said. "I am so humbled by the generosity and tenacity that went into creating this facility. I want to thank everyone who made it possible."

Grants and donations are funding the $1 million-plus project. Once the total amount was secured, the CCC Board of Trustees selected Stephens Construction of Colby.

All individuals contributing will be named on the Colby Tennis Center donor wall. Donations are tax-deductible and can be made to the Colby Community College Endowment Foundation.

The facility is expected to open in September.

SHERMAN COUNTY —Three people were injured in an accident just after 8p.m. Sunday in Sherman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1995 Chevy pickup driven by Brandon N. Cowan, 33, Goodland, was northbound on County Road 23 two miles north of Old Highway 24.

The pickup left roadway to the right, struck a pole and rolled into the east ditch.

EMS transported&nbsp;Cowan and passengers Cade M.&nbsp;Migchelbrink, 17, Atwood and Cooper Cowan, 2, Goodland, to the hospital in Goodland. They were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

The theme for this year’s National Poison Prevention Week is: Prepare. Prevent. Protect.

Prepare&nbsp;– Save the Poison Control number 1-800-222-1222 in your phone in case of an emergency.

Prevent&nbsp;– More than 90% of poisonings happen in the home. To make your home safer, always read and follow directions on labels and keep potential poisons locked up and away in their original containers.

Protect&nbsp;– Seconds count! If you suspect a poisoning, don’t take a chance. Call right away.

Not everyone realizes that Poison Centers are for everyone. While poison centers get more calls about children, the calls about teens, adults, and older adults tend to be more serious. Nearly 60% of calls to the Kansas Poison Control in 2020 involved medicines or pharmaceuticals. However, other common poisons include household products, plants, mushrooms, pesticides, animal bites and stings, carbon monoxide, and many other types of nonpharmaceutical substances.

“The best piece of advice we can give is to program the Poison Help number, 800-222-1222, in your phone and post it visibly in your home. This way you are prepared in the event of a poisoning emergency or simply have questions,” said Stefanie Baines, Education Coordinator for the Kansas Poison Control Center.

60% of calls to Kan. Poison Control in 2020 involved medicines, pharmaceuticals

Tucked along Wichita Street in Russell is a quirky, brightly painted little building.&nbsp;

The building is split into two sections. On one side is David Friday's art studio — the Friday Art Factory. On the other side sits a bright red barber chair, where the barber of more than 20 years cuts hair.

Friday's art is currently being exhibited at Professor's Sandwich Shop in Hays, which will be on view through March. He will be part of an exhibit with 11 other Kansas artists on the theme "story weather" at the Denies Cultural Center from April 16 to May 22.

He also has an upcoming exhibit in November 2022 at the Birger Sandzén Memorial Art Gallery in Lindsborg.

Friday lived in Russell and attended Russell High School as a teen. He moved back to the community five years ago to be near family.

Friday studied for a time at Wichita State University, but, for the most part, he is a self-taught artist.

He became a sign painter in the early '70s and eventually went into commercial graphic design. He worked in McPherson and later moved to Denver and San Diego.

He made the move to focus on fine art in 1981 and went to barber school in 1997.

"That was the best thing I ever did for my art career, because it keeps the rent paid," he said.

Friday said being a barber is also being an artist.

"Every haircut is a little sculpture," he said, "so there is a lot of satisfaction from just doing good work in doing someone's hair.&nbsp;

"What is probably most valuable to me is my people contact, because painting is an activity I do in a room by myself. It can be quite solitary and quite lonesome.&nbsp;

"Cutting hair is very social. You're talking to someone different every 15 minutes. Those two things really balance each other out well."

Being an artist and a barber also balance each other economically. Selling a painting is feast or famine, Friday explained, but his barber income is steady.

Friday's regulars at the barber shop know he's an artist, but newbees are often surprised when they walk in the shop/studio.

"They usually go, 'Wow! Who did all of these paintings?' " he said. "But now most of my customers know me, and they can see on the front of my building that I am both a barber and an artist."

Friday worked with his landlord to remodel the former lawnmower repair shop. The front door sports a painting of a chubby little man in a barber's chair. The inside also features many of Friday's paintings in both his studio and the barber shop.

Friday primarily works in acrylics and has an affinity for bright colors. He uses an acrylic compound made of crushed marble to add texture to many of his paintings.

He said his art is influenced by a little bit of everything.

"I'm influenced by nature. I'm influenced by other artists' work that I see," he said.&nbsp;

He honed his craft by copying other famous artists, including Picasso, Thomas Hart Benton, Birger Sandzén and Lester Raymer. Friday was an artists in residence at Raymer's Red Barn Studio in Lindsborg.

"I'm an untrained artist," he said. "Most of my learning has been learning by doing."

Friday said paintings of sunflowers, windmills and barns are in demand in Kansas, but he also likes to paint people.&nbsp;

"They are just characters that I make up, and they become friends when I'm painting them," he said.

Friday, 67, says he has no plans for retirement either from being a barber or his painting.

"I will do it as long as my body will let me," he said. ... "Picasso lived to 92 and painted until up to the day he died, so that is sort of my goal too — I make it to 92, and I'm still painting.&nbsp;

Russell artist also a Picasso with clippers

The annual HaysMed Service Awards celebration was held last week in Hays. Due to COVID-19 a drive thru event was held at the hospital honoring the Associates who have reached milestones in their service at HaysMed.

The highlight of the celebration is the presentation of the Norman W. Jeter Humanitarian Award, the Sister Mary J. Mollison Nurse of the Year Award and the Vic Eddy, MD, Physician of the Year Award.  These awards are the highest level of recognition that an associate of HaysMed, part of The University of Kansas Health System, can receive.

The Norman W. Jeter Humanitarian Award recognizes an individual’s human kindness and dedication to medical excellence.&nbsp; The award was presented to Theresa Roe, Physical Therapist.&nbsp; Roe is the Director of Rehabilitation Services at the hospital.

Recipient of the Sr. Mary J. Mollison Nurse of the Year Award was Diane Scott, RN.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; This award honors a nurse who displays excellence in the areas of job knowledge and performance, quality improvements, self-development and participation in hospital and community affairs.&nbsp; Scott is a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit.

COLBY
— Award winners have been announced for the annual Art on the Oasis show held
March 5 to 7 at Colby Community College. Organizers extend appreciation to the
donors and communities involved with another successful event.&nbsp;

The
judge was Fort Hays State University sculpture professor Tobias Flores.

The
top three artists in professional, amateur, and high school divisions were
presented with cash prizes. High schools at the show included Colby, Decatur
Community, Hoxie, Oakley, Phillipsburg, Wheatland-Grinnell, and
Wauneta-Palisade in Nebraska.&nbsp;

Julie
Peterson-Shea of Phillipsburg received Best of Show. The top three placers are
listed in each division with their current town or school.
